Benford's phenomenological law gives the expected frequencies of the first significant digit (i.e., the leftmost non-zero digit) of any given series of numbers. According to this law, the frequency of 1 is higher than that of 2; this in turn appears more often than 3, and so on decreasing until 9. Similarly, Benford's law can also be applied to the first two significant digits (i.e., from 10 to 99), and so on. We applied Benford's law to sets of taxonomic data sets consisting of the number of taxa included in taxa of higher rank. We chose the angiosperms (Magnoliophyta) as a model case, because they are very diverse, are monophyletic, and a consensus on taxonomy of orders and families has been achieved (classification APG III), and we used as sets of data the number of species, genera, families, and orders. Only the number of species per family and per order are Benford's sets, but the remaining data sets do not obey Benford. Furthermore, in the case of the analysis of the first two significant digits of species per genus, the deviation from Benford was very large, but they fit to a power law. Given that the conformity to Benford's law is fulfilled for ‘natural' taxonomic categories of angiosperms (i.e., species and family), but not for those with more artificiality (genus), we speculate, ‘the more natural, the more Benford'.  相似文献

In order to address the recent concerns over a possible increasing in brain tumour mortality among interventional radiologists and cardiologist, this work evaluated the exposure conditions of the operator’s brain during interventional procedures using Monte Carlo simulations with anthropomorphic phantoms. The absorbed doses in several predefined segments of the operator’s brain were estimated in a typical interventional radiology irradiation scenario. The doses were normalized to the KAP values simulated for ten X-ray beam qualities and four projections (PA, RAO 25°, LAO 25° and CRA 25°). For the interventional radiology scenario, because of the position of the operator, no difference was found in the exposure between the left and right regions of the brain for the first operator. However, for the second operator standing at a farer distance from the tube, the exposure of the left part of the brain is up to two times higher than that of the right part. The results are in agreement with dose measurements reported in the literature. The conversion factors, obtained as the absorbed dose per KAP, can be used to obtain a first estimate of the exposure of the brain of the operators during interventional procedures.  相似文献

Manual palpation is a common and very informative diagnostic tool based on estimation of changes in the stiffness of tissues that result from pathology. In the case of a small lesion or a lesion that is located deep within the body, it is difficult for changes in mechanical properties of tissue to be detected or evaluated via palpation. Furthermore, palpation is non-quantitative and cannot be used to localize the lesion. Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) can also be used to evaluate the properties of biological tissues non-invasively. In this study, an MRgFUS system combines high field (7T) MR and 3 MHz focused ultrasound to provide high resolution MR imaging and a small ultrasonic interrogation region (~0.5 x 0.5 x 2 mm), as compared with current clinical systems. MR-Acoustic Radiation Force Imaging (MR-ARFI) provides a reliable and efficient method for beam localization by detecting micron-scale displacements induced by ultrasound mechanical forces. The first aim of this study is to develop a sequence that can concurrently quantify acoustic radiation force displacements and image the resulting transient shear wave. Our motivation in combining these two measurements is to develop a technique that can rapidly provide both ARFI and shear wave velocity estimation data, making it suitable for use in interventional radiology. Secondly, we validate this sequence in vivo by estimating the displacement before and after high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation, and we validate the shear wave velocity in vitro using tissue-mimicking gelatin and tofu phantoms. Such rapid acquisitions are especially useful in interventional radiology applications where minimizing scan time is highly desirable.  相似文献

IntroductionInterventional procedures are associated with potentially high radiation doses to the skin. The 2013/59/EURATOM Directive establishes that the equipment used for interventional radiology must have a device or a feature informing the practitioner of relevant parameters for assessing patient dose at the end of the procedure. Monte Carlo codes of radiation transport are considered to be one of the most reliable tools available to assess doses. However, they are usually too time consuming for use in clinical practice. This work presents the validation of the fast Monte Carlo code MC-GPU for application in interventional radiology.MethodologiesMC-GPU calculations were compared against the well-validated Monte Carlo simulation code PENELOPE/penEasy by simulating the organ dose distribution in a voxelized anthropomorphic phantom. In a second phase, the code was compared against thermoluminescent measurements performed on slab phantoms, both in a calibration laboratory and at a hospital.ResultsThe results obtained from the two simulation codes show very good agreement, differences in the output were within 1%, whereas the calculation time on the MC-GPU was 2500 times shorter. Comparison with measurements is of the order of 10%, within the associated uncertainty.ConclusionsIt has been verified that MC-GPU provides good estimates of the dose when compared to PENELOPE program. It is also shown that it presents very good performance when assessing organ doses in very short times, less than one minute, in real clinical set-ups. Future steps would be to simulate complex procedures with several projections.  相似文献

Determinism and randomness are two inherent aspects of all physical processes. Time series from chaotic systems share several features identical with those generated from stochastic processes, which makes them almost undistinguishable. In this paper, a new method based on Benford''s law is designed in order to distinguish noise from chaos by only information from the first digit of considered series. By applying this method to discrete data, we confirm that chaotic data indeed can be distinguished from noise data, quantitatively and clearly.  相似文献

Digit reduction has occurred in parallel in many mammalian lineages. However, despite this pattern's prevalence, the developmental mechanisms underlying mammalian digit reduction remain controversial. We therefore undertook a study of digit development in the pig (Sus scrofa), a mammal with reduced first, second, and fifth digits. Our results indicate that from its earliest formation, the pig limb bud is significantly narrower than that of the model pentadactyl mammal, mouse. Furthermore, the cartilage condensations of the pig's reduced digits are noticeably smaller than those of their nonreduced counterparts from the time of their formation. In addition, growth rates of pig digits are comparable, as are the patterns of cell death in developing pig and mouse limbs. Taken together, results suggest that pig's first, second, and fifth digits are primarily reduced through evolutionary modifications in the early developmental patterning of their limbs. Results of this study, coupled with those from study of limb development in other mammals, suggest that although major developmental reorganizations (e.g., complete digit or limb loss) during early limb development may be selected against, it may be common for more subtle evolutionary modifications in limb development (e.g., changes in relative digit size) to occur at this time.  相似文献

PurposeInterventional radiology techniques cause radiation exposure both to patient and personnel. The radiation dose to the operator is usually measured with dosimeters located at specific points above or below the lead aprons. The aim of this study is to develop and validate two fast Monte Carlo (MC) codes for radiation transport in order to improve the assessment of individual doses in interventional radiology. The proposed methodology reduces the number of required dosemeters and provides immediate dose results.MethodsTwo fast MC simulation codes, PENELOPE/penEasyIR and MCGPU-IR, have been developed. Both codes have been validated by comparing fast MC calculations with the multipurpose PENELOPE MC code and with measurements during a realistic interventional procedure.ResultsThe new codes were tested with a computation time of about 120 s to estimate operator doses while a standard simulation needs several days to obtain similar uncertainties. When compared with the standard calculation in simple set-ups, MCGPU-IR tends to underestimate doses (up to 5%), while PENELOPE/penEasyIR overestimates them (up to 18%). When comparing both fast MC codes with experimental values in realistic set-ups, differences are within 25%. These differences are within accepted uncertainties in individual monitoring.ConclusionThe study highlights the fact that computational dosimetry based on the use of fast MC codes can provide good estimates of the personal dose equivalent and overcome some of the limitations of occupational monitoring in interventional radiology. Notably, MCGPU-IR calculates both organ doses and effective dose, providing a better estimate of radiation risk.  相似文献

The aim of the guideline presented in this article is to unify the test parameters for image quality evaluation and radiation output in all types of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) systems. The applications of CBCT spread over dental and interventional radiology, guided surgery and radiotherapy. The chosen tests provide the means to objectively evaluate the performance and monitor the constancy of the imaging chain. Experience from all involved associations has been collected to achieve a consensus that is rigorous and helpful for the practice. The guideline recommends to assess image quality in terms of uniformity, geometrical precision, voxel density values (or Hounsfield units where available), noise, low contrast resolution and spatial resolution measurements. These tests usually require the use of a phantom and evaluation software. Radiation output can be determined with a kerma-area product meter attached to the tube case. Alternatively, a solid state dosimeter attached to the flat panel and a simple geometric relationship can be used to calculate the dose to the isocentre. Summary tables including action levels and recommended frequencies for each test, as well as relevant references, are provided. If the radiation output or image quality deviates from expected values, or exceeds documented action levels for a given system, a more in depth system analysis (using conventional tests) and corrective maintenance work may be required.  相似文献

Benford’s phenomenological law gives the expected frequencies of the first significant digits of any given series of numbers. According to this law, the frequency of 1 is higher than that of 2; this in turn appears more often 3, and so on. Similarly, Benford’s law can also be applied to the first two significant digits (i.e., from 10 to 99), and so on. Here, we show that gross data sets of daily pollen counts from three aerobiological stations (located in European cities with different features regarding vegetation and climatology) fit Benford’s law for the first significant digits, but this is not always true for the data transformed by a correction factor used in aerobiological studies. That is to say, the biases introduced by rounding and lower and upper built-in limits in pollen counts are detected by Benford’s law analysis. The analysis of the first two significant digits from transformed data is better explained by a Power law than Benford’s law. We propose that Benford’s law could be used as a quality control tool for numerical aerobiological data sets.  相似文献

Simulated ecological datasets have been widely used to assess the ability of ordination techniques to portray patterns in ecological assemblage data. Such datasets typically contain a single assemblage sampled over an environmental gradient or set of gradients. Little has been done on the generation of artificial datasets that contain a number of different species assemblages, to aid in the evaluation of multivariate techniques that test for differences between assemblages of species. This paper describes and compares two simulation methods that generate ecologically realistic artificial multi-assemblage datasets. Both methods provide multivariate data (e.g. species abundances) for replicate sites within discretely different assemblages. The first technique is a coenocline model based on species' responses to variation modeled by a five-parameter β-function, where variation in species abundances both within and between assemblages is governed by differences in the positions of sites and assemblages along environmental gradients. The second technique, the resampling method, involves bootstrap resampling of real assemblage datasets, with the addition of selected types of controlled differences between assemblages. Here we use it to generate turnover in species composition. We calibrate both simulation methods based on a field assemblage of bird species. The two different simulation methods portray different levels and types of between-assemblage variation. The resampling method allows greater control over some aspects of assemblage difference (e.g. independently varying differences in species richness and compositional turnover) than the coenocline method. Both can generate usable replicated simulated datasets for assessing the ability of multivariate tests to detect ecological variation among assemblages.  相似文献

The practice of using children''s human figure drawings (HFDs) to assess their intellectual ability is pervasive among psychologists and therapists in many countries. Since the first systematic scoring system for HFDs was published in 1926, their continued popularity has led to the development of several revised versions of the test. Most recently, the Draw-A-Person Intellectual Ability Test for children, adolescents, and adults (DAP:IQ) was published. It is the most up-to-date form of HFD test designed to assess intellectual functioning across a wide age range. In the present study, we assessed the validity of the DAP:IQ as a screening measure of intelligence in both children and adults. In Experiment 1, 100 4- to 5-year-old children completed the DAP:IQ and the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-Third Edition. In Experiment 2, 100 adults completed the DAP:IQ and the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence. In both experiments, we found only weak to modest correlations between scores on the DAP:IQ and the Wechsler tests. Furthermore, when we compared individual''s scores on the two tests, the DAP:IQ yielded high false positive and false negative rates when screening for borderline and superior intellectual functioning. Based on these findings, and based on the lack of validity of previous HFD tests, we conclude that practitioners should not rely on HFD tests as a projective measure of intelligence.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a hybrid clustering method that combines the strengths of bottom-up hierarchical clustering with that of top-down clustering. The first method is good at identifying small clusters but not large ones; the strengths are reversed for the second method. The hybrid method is built on the new idea of a mutual cluster: a group of points closer to each other than to any other points. Theoretical connections between mutual clusters and bottom-up clustering methods are established, aiding in their interpretation and providing an algorithm for identification of mutual clusters. We illustrate the technique on simulated and real microarray datasets.  相似文献

The role of the biomedical physicist in the education of the healthcare professions has not yet been studied in a systematic manner. This article presents the first results of an EFOMP project aimed at researching and developing this important component of the role of the biomedical physicist. A background to the study expands on the reasons that led to the need for the project. This is followed by an extensive review of the published literature regarding the role. This focuses mainly on the teaching contributions within programmes for physicians, diagnostic radiographers, radiation therapists, and the postgraduate medical specializations of radiology, radiotherapy, interventional radiology and cardiology. Finally a summary list of the specific research objectives that need to be immediately addressed is presented. These are the carrying out of a Europe-wide position audit for the role, the construction of a strategic role development model and the design of a curriculum development model suitable for modern healthcare professional education.  相似文献

PurposeValidate the skin dose software within the radiation dose index monitoring system NEXO[DOSE]® (Bracco Injeneering S.A., Lausanne, Switzerland). It provides the skin dose distribution in interventional radiology (IR) procedures.MethodsTo determine the skin dose distribution and the Peak Skin Dose (PSD) in IR procedures, the software uses exposure and geometrical parameters taken from the radiation dose structured report and additional information specific to each angiographic system. To test the accuracy of the software, GafChromic® XR-RV3 films, wrapped under a cylindrical PMMA phantom, were irradiated with different setups. Calculations and films results are compared in terms of absolute dose and geometric accuracy, using two angiographic systems (Philips Integris Allura FD20, Siemens AXIOM-ArtisZeego).ResultsCalculated and film measured PSD values agree with an average difference of 7% ± 5%. The discrepancies in dose evaluation increase up to 33% in lower dose regions, because the algorithm does not consider the out-of-field scatter contribution of the neighboring fields, which is more significant in these areas. Regarding the geometric accuracy, the differences between the simulated dose spatial distributions and the measured ones are<3 mm (4%) in simple tests and 5 mm (5%) in setups closer to clinical practice. Moreover, similar results are obtained for the two studied angiographic system vendors.ConclusionsNEXO[DOSE]® provides an accurate skin dose distribution and PSD estimate. It will allow faster and more accurate monitoring of patient follow-up in the future.  相似文献

Seed dormancy develops latein embryogenesis after a period of potential prematuregermination and has been associated with levels ofabscisic acid (ABA) in, and sensitivity to, ABA ofembryos. In wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)embryos, there are two peaks in levels of ABA duringdevelopment: the first occurs 25 days afterpollination (DAP) and the second from 35 to 40 DAP. The first peak of ABA appears to be associated withthe development of the embryo's sensitivity to ABAsince such sensitivity was altered in seeds on earsthat were incubated in a solution of ABA from 15 and20 DAP. In the embryos of Kitakei wheat, a line thatexhibits dormancy, the second peak, at around 35 DAP,was more prolonged in comparison to Chihoku, anon-dormant line. The results support the proposedinvolvement of ABA in the formation and maintenance ofseed dormancy during middle and late embryogenesis. When developing embryos were incubated in water, embryonic ABA leaked out from the embryos, inparticular between 30 and 40 DAP. Prematuregermination observed between 30 and 40 DAP might berelated to such leakage of ABA from embryos.  相似文献

Fingerprinting the impacts of global change on tropical forests   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Recent observations of widespread changes in mature tropical forests such as increasing tree growth, recruitment and mortality rates and increasing above-ground biomass suggest that ''global change'' agents may be causing predictable changes in tropical forests. However, consensus over both the robustness of these changes and the environmental drivers that may be causing them is yet to emerge. This paper focuses on the second part of this debate. We review (i) the evidence that the physical, chemical and biological environment that tropical trees grow in has been altered over recent decades across large areas of the tropics, and (ii) the theoretical, experimental and observational evidence regarding the most likely effects of each of these changes on tropical forests. Ten potential widespread drivers of environmental change were identified: temperature, precipitation, solar radiation, climatic extremes (including El Niño-Southern Oscillation events), atmospheric CO2 concentrations, nutrient deposition, O3/acid depositions, hunting, land-use change and increasing liana numbers. We note that each of these environmental changes is expected to leave a unique ''fingerprint'' in tropical forests, as drivers directly force different processes, have different distributions in space and time and may affect some forests more than others (e.g. depending on soil fertility). Thus, in the third part of the paper we present testable a priori predictions of forest responses to assist ecologists in attributing particular changes in forests to particular causes across multiple datasets. Finally, we discuss how these drivers may change in the future and the possible consequences for tropical forests.  相似文献

The paper presents the second part of the review on a high-sensitive technique for time-resolved imaging and measurements of the 2D intensity profiles of millimeter-wave radiation by means of Visible Continuum Radiation emitted by the positive column of a medium-pressure Cs-Xe DC Discharge (VCRD method). The first part of the review was focused on the operating principles and fundamentals of this new technique [Plasma Phys. Rep. 43, 253 (2017)]. The second part of the review focuses on experiments demonstrating application of this imaging technique to measure the parameters of radiation at the output of moderate-power millimeter-wave sources. In particular, the output waveguide mode of a moderate-power W-band gyrotron with a pulsed magnetic field was identified and the relative powers of some spurious modes at the outputs of this gyrotron and a pulsed D-band orotron were evaluated. The paper also reviews applications of the VCRD technique for real-time imaging and nondestructive testing with a frame rate of higher than 10 fps by using millimeter waves. Shadow projection images of objects opaque and transparent for millimeter waves have been obtained using pulsed watt-scale millimeter waves for object illumination. Near video frame rate millimeter-wave shadowgraphy has been demonstrated. It is shown that this technique can be used for single-shot screening (including detection of concealed objects) and time-resolved imaging of time-dependent processes.  相似文献

Perinatal hypoxia is known to induce long-lasting changes in the central dopaminergic system. In order to understand the cellular mechanism of these changes, we studied the effects of hypoxia on the levels of dopamine (DA) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) mRNA in untreated and NGF treated PC12 cells. On the second day after plating (DAP), cells were exposed to a hypoxic episode (pO2 = 10-20 mm Hg, 24 h), and the levels of DA and TH mRNA were examined on DAP 4 and DAP 8. In untreated cells, hypoxia induced a two fold increase both in DA and TH mRNA levels on DAP 4 which normalized up to DAP 8. This increase correlated with an activation of the hypoxia inducible factor (HIF-1alpha), measured with a reporter gene. In contrast, NGF treated cells responded to hypoxia with an increase of DA level on DAP 8. In these cells neither an increase of the HIF-1alpha activity measured immediately after hypoxia nor a significant increase of the TH mRNA level on DAP 8 were found. The findings indicate that NGF shifts the hypoxia induced changes of DA levels from a short-term to a long-term mode. The long-term increase of dopamine levels is the most likely result of changes connected with cell growth and differentiation and not the result of a long-term TH mRNA level increase.  相似文献
