Summary. We analyzed the impact of ecological parameters, such as nest density and nest site availability, on colony organization and investment patterns in two populations of the ant Temnothorax crassispinus, a parapatric sibling species of the well-studied T. nylanderi (Temnothorax was until recently referred to as Leptothorax (Myrafant); Bolton, 1993). As in T. nylanderi, sex allocation ratios were strongly associated with total sexual reproduction, i. e., nests with large sexual investment produced mainly female sexuals. Furthermore, nest site quality affected sex allocation ratios, with colonies from ephemeral nest sites producing a more male-biased sex allocation ratio than colonies from sturdy nest sites. In contrast to T. nylanderi, workers in colonies of T. crassispinus were mostly fullsisters both in a dense and a sparsely populated area, suggesting that colony fusion and colony usurpation are rare in this species. In addition, the presence of a queen in a local nest unit strongly influenced sex ratio decisions, in that these nests raised a more male biased allocation ratio compared to queenless nests. This also suggests that colony structure is more stable in T. crassispinus than in T. nylanderi. We conclude that sibling species, though often very similar in their morphology and ecological requirements, may nevertheless react very differently to ecological variation.Received 11 December 2003; revised 4 March 2004; accepted 19 April 2004.  相似文献

Emigrating colonies of the ant Temnothorax (formerly Leptothorax)albipennis can choose the best of several nest sites, even whenthe active ants organizing the move do not compare sites. Thiscollective ability depends on a quorum rule used by ants assessinga candidate site. Only when the site's population has surpasseda threshold do they switch from slow recruitment of fellow activeants by tandem runs to rapid transport of the majority of thecolony. Here, I show that ants perceive the achievement of aquorum through their rate of direct encounters with nest matesat the site. When ants in a crowded site were prevented fromtactile contact with nest mates, they recruited by tandem runs,as though to an empty nest. Furthermore, when the encounterrate was raised independent of population, by reducing the sizeof the candidate nest, ants started to transport at a significantlylower population. The switch occurred at the same encounterrate regardless of nest size, whether the rate was measuredas the mean over the entire visit or as the inverse of the latencyuntil the first encounter. Because encounter rate reflects thedensity of nest mates and thus varies with nest size as wellas population, the ants' collective decision-making algorithmmay be robust to the exact population at which the switch totransport occurs. Ants cease monitoring quorum presence afterswitching to transport, coincident with an abrupt shorteningof visit duration by approximately 2 min, which may be interpretedas the time required for quorum detection.  相似文献

1. Genetic colony structure of the small central European ant Leptothorax nylanderi is affected strongly by ecological constraints such as nest site availability and intraspecific social parasitism. 2. Although L. nylanderi is generally monogynous and monandrous, more than a quarter of all nests collected in a dense population near Würzburg, Germany, contained several matrilines. As shown by microsatellite analysis, the average nest‐mate relatedness in these nests was 0.20. Genetically heterogeneous nests arise from nest take‐over by alien colonies or founding queens, a result of severe competition for nest sites. 3. In summer, more than one‐third of all colonies inhabited several nest sites at a time. Polydomy appears to be rather limited, with two or three nests belonging to a single polydomous colony. 4. Queens appear to dominate male production; only a small fraction (8%) of males was definitively not progeny of the queen present but might have been worker progeny or offspring of another queen. 5. Strong evidence for heterozygote deficiency was found and a total of nine diploid males was discovered in two colonies. These findings suggest deviation from random mating through small, localised nuptial flights.  相似文献

Inter- and intraspecific competition was investigated in ants of the myrmicine genus leptothorax in a deciduous woodland near Würzburg, Germany. The most common species, A. (Myrafant) nylanderi, lives in rotting pine, oak, and elder sticks and may locally reach densities of 10 nests per m2. In the studied sites, only a small fraction of colonies were polydomous, i.e. single colonies typically did not inhabit several nest sites. The home ranges of nylanderi colonies overlap the ranges of other conspecific colonies and colonies of other species, especially L. (s.str.) gredleri. Foragers from different colonies encountering one another in the field back off without exhibiting strong aggression, suggesting that colonies do not defend absolute foraging territories. In laboratory experiments, the frequency and severity of agonistic interactions among workers from different colonies, all living in pine sticks, increased significantly with the distance between their nests. Workers from colonies nesting in different types of wood exhibited significantly more aggression. Experiments in which we transferred colonies from pine sticks into artificial pine or oak nests corroborate the hypothesis that nesting material strongly influences colony odour in L. nylanderi. The evolutionary significance of this apparent dear-enemy phenomenon is discussed.  相似文献

In two nearctic ants, Leptothorax canadensis and Leptothorax sp. A, young queens may either found their own nest solitarily after mating or seek adoption into an established colony. Whether a queen disperses or not is associated with genetically determined queen morphology in Leptothorax sp. A. Whereas a majority of winged queens attempt solitary colony founding after mating, most wingless, intermorphic queens return to their maternal nests and new colonies are founded by budding after hibernation. The latter strategy appears to be correlated with patchy, isolated habitats, whereas in extended boreal forests dispersal on the wing is probably more common. Alternative dispersal strategies strongly affect the average number of queens per colony and seasonal fluctuations of colony structure.  相似文献

Queen number varies in the population of O. hastatus in SE Brazil. Here, we evaluate how nesting ecology and colony structure are associated in this species, and investigate how reproduction is shared among nestmate queens. Queen number per colony is positively correlated with nesting space (root cluster of epiphytic bromeliads), and larger nest sites host larger ant colonies. Plant samplings revealed that suitable nest sites are limited and that nesting space at ant-occupied bromeliads differs in size and height from the general bromeliad community. Dissections revealed that queens in polygynous colonies are inseminated, have developed ovaries, and produce eggs. Behavioral observations showed that reproduction in polygynous colonies is mediated by queen–queen agonistic interactions that include egg cannibalism. Dominant queens usually produced more eggs. Field observations indicate that colonies can be initiated through haplometrosis. Polygyny in O. hastatus may result either from groups of cofounding queens (pleometrosis) or from adoption of newly mated queens by established colonies (secondary polygyny). Clumping of bromeliads increases nest space and probably adds stability through a strong root system, which may promote microhabitat selection by queens and favor pleometrosis. Rainstorms that frequently knock down bromeliads can be a source of colony break-up and may promote polygyny. Bromeliads are limited nest sites and may represent a risk for young queens leaving a suitable nest, thus favoring secondary polygyny. Although proximate mechanisms mediating queen number are poorly understood, this study suggests that heterogeneous microhabitat conditions probably contribute to the coexistence of variable forms of social structure in O. hastatus.  相似文献

In the Nearctic ant Leptothorax sp. A, aggressive interactions among wingless intermorphic queens and primarily winged gynomorphic queens lead to the formation of dominance hierarchies, in which the highest-ranking individual is the only egg-layer in a colony. Fighting occurs during two periods of the annual cycle: in late summer, newly adopted young queens are integrated into the colony's hierarchy; after hibernation, fighting resumes and the high aggressiveness of α-queens may now lead to the emigration of β and other middle-ranking queens. The α-position appears to be very stable over successive fighting periods, though an estimate of nestmate relatedness by allozyme electrophoresis (Polyacrylamide gels and cellulose acetate plates) suggests that queen replacement occasionally occurs. The mean relatedness determined for adult workers in a functionally monogynous population of Leptothorax sp. A was 0.54 and their effective number of mothers therefore 1.5. This is lower than expected and found for monogynous colonies. Dominance rank is apparently not correlated with queen morph, weight, and size, but an influence of insemination, age, or previous reproductive experience is likely.  相似文献

The evolutionary interactions between permanently social parasiticspecies and their hosts are of special interest because socialparasites are not only closely dependent on, but are also closelyrelated to, their hosts. The small European slavemaker Harpagoxenussublaevis has evolved several characters that help manipulateits host. In this study we investigated adaptations of thissocial parasite to its local hosts and the geographic patternof host resistance in two main host species from three differentpopulations. In behavioral experiments, we examined whetherhost colonies from three geographically distant Leptothoraxacervorum populations varied in their ability to defend thenest against social parasites. Naive colonies from the unparasitizedEnglish population killed attacking slavemakers more often thandid host colonies from two parasitized populations. We alsofound strong interpopulation variation in the ability of theslavemaker to manipulate host behavior. H. sublaevis uses theDufour gland secretion to induce intracolonial fights and, ingeneral, this "propaganda" substance was most effective againstlocal hosts. Our results suggest that the social parasite isleading the arms race in this aspect. Similar experiments uncovereddifferences between two populations of the second host speciesL. muscorum and could demonstrate that nest defense in bothhost species is similarly efficient. In L. acervorum, monogynouscolonies were more successful in nest defense, whereas socialstructure had no impact in L. muscorum. Colony size did notaffect the efficacy of nest defense in either host species.The caste of the slavemaker had a strong influence on the successof an attack.  相似文献

In polygynous social insects more than one queen reproduces in a colony. In such populations ecological factors affecting survival and reproduction of queens are likely to be of prime importance for social organization. In particular, habitat saturation leading to severe limitations in the availability of nest sites has been suggested to promote high queen number. In this study we examine the social and genetic structure of colonies in the polygynous ant Myrmica sulcinodis. We investigated a single breeding population in two adjacent habitats which differed markedly in the availability of nest sites. In the main habitat M. sulcinodis occupied almost all suitable nest sites, whereas in the other (marginal) habitat most sites were unoccupied by ants, due to a recent fire. In support of the habitat saturation hypothesis, the number of queens per colony which could explain the estimated relatedness among workers was almost five times higher for the main habitat than for the marginal habitat. This is the first demonstration that the kin structure of a social insect population is plastic and responds adaptively to short-term changes in ecological constraints such as nest site availability. Based on combined genetic and demographic data we discuss queen reproductive strategies and suggest that a special class of queen ‘floaters’ only stays ephemerally in the colonies, thus causing a substantial turnover of reproducing queens across years.  相似文献

The standing crop and photosynthetic activity of Microcystisaeruginosa Kütz. in both the plankton and sediment wereinvestigated from November 1979 to May 1982 in Lake Kasumigaura,Japan. The number of planktonic colonies of this species decreasedfrom early autumn to early spring, but increased in the sedimentduring late summer and autumn. The overwintering colonies inthe sediment were –100–1000 times greater per unitarea than those in lake water. No photoinhibition of photosynthesiscould be observed in overwintering Microcystis. The values ofthe initial slopes of photosynthesis-light (P-I) curves weresimilar to those of the summer population, although the maximumphotosynthetic rate (Pmax) measured at 20°C was lower thanthat of the summer planktonic population. In winter the valuesof initial slope of the P-I curve, and the ratio of phycobilinto chlorophyll a sorted from sediment were higher than in coloniesfrom the plankton.  相似文献

The recovery process of Messor aciculatus (Fr. Smith) harvester ant colonies from habitat disturbance by construction work in an urban park was investigated from 1989 to 1994. Colonies located in 1989 were considered to be survivors of the disturbance, and colonies located for the first time after 1990 were considered to be recruits. The colonies continuously increased in number after the disturbance, and the population size more than doubled just after the disturbance. Analyses of the nest site distribution of colonies in 1989 and 1994 suggest that landform modification destroyed some of them, and that the changed nest site distribution in 1989 affected the distribution in 1994, or, in other words, the disturbance indirectly affected the nest distribution 5 years later. Analyses of the nearest neighbor to each colony suggested that established colonies would obstruct newly recruited colonies around their nests. Construction may open up space for recruitment colonization by removing established colonies, and may also create suitable conditions by destruction of original vegetation, or returning vegetation to the early stages of plant community succession. As a result, the disturbance may facilitate the subsequent recruitment of new colonies and rejuvenate the population.  相似文献

Lone Bombus ignitus queens are known to start nests in small underground cavities. To examine the nest‐site preference of post‐hibernating queens, choice tests were carried out by providing queens with orphan colonies and empty cavities as possible nesting sites within an experimental box. Our results showed that the queens had a strong preference for takeover of an orphan colony, suggesting that nest takeover (usurpation) could occur in nature even with the presence of possible empty cavities for nesting. We compared the colony‐growth process and final production of sexuals between non‐takeover and takeover colonies. The increase in the number of egg cups was faster in the takeover colonies, suggesting that orphan broods elicit earlier oviposition by the usurping queen. Reproductives emerged earlier (significant for new queens) and in greater numbers (males) from takeover colonies than from non‐takeover colonies. Thus, post‐hibernating B. ignitus queens would search for and take over small orphan colonies to increase their fitness.  相似文献

Honeybee (Apis mellifera) colonies rob honey from each other during periods of nectar shortage. Persistent robbing can killweak colonies. Primarily responsible for preventing robbingare guard bees. Previous research has shown that the probabilityof both nest mate and non-nest mate workers being acceptedby guards at the nest entrance increases as nectar availability increases. The mechanism responsible for this change in guardacceptance can be explained by two competing hypotheses: OdorConvergence and Adaptive Threshold Shift. In this study wetested the Odor Convergence hypothesis. The acceptance by guardsat the nest entrance of workers transferred between four coloniesthat had been fed either odorless sucrose syrup (two colonies)or diluted heather honey (Calluna vulgaris) (two colonies)was measured for 3 days before feeding and during 2 weeks offeeding. Despite the large sample sizes, the probability ofguards accepting non-nest mates was not affected by the similaritiesor dissimilarities in food odor between guards' and non-nestmates' colonies. This finding contrasts with the accepted wisdom that food odors are important in nest mate recognition in honeybeesand the data, therefore, strongly reject the Odor Convergencehypothesis.  相似文献

Previous studies of the role of nest predation in conspecificnest parasitism have not taken into account the possibilitythat predation risk may not be randomly distributed among nestsites and that breeding individuals may use different cues toassess the risk and adjust their reproductive tactic betweenyears accordingly. Especially in cavity-nesting species, therole of nest predation in conspecific nest parasitism has beendownplayed, while the role of nest site limitation has beenhighlighted. Using both observational and experimental data,I show that in the common goldeneye (Bucephala clangula), acavity-nesting species in which conspecific nest parasitism iscommon, predation risk varies considerably between nest sitesand does not follow a random expectation. The inequality inpredation risk between nest sites also showed up in the occurrenceof parasitized nests in an experimental setup. Nests parasitizedin year t were more frequent in those nest sites that were notdepredated during the previous nesting attempt in year t - nthan in nest sites that were depredated and in control nestsites that had not been used for nesting before. A nest siteaddition experiment revealed that conspecific nest parasitismwas not associated with nest site limitation. My findings givesupport for the hypothesis that nest predation is an importantecological factor explaining conspecific nest parasitism ingoldeneyes.  相似文献

The ponerine ant Pachycondyla goeldii is a monogynous (i.e. one queen per colony) arboreal species that colonizes pioneer areas. Founding queens and first generation workers initiate their own ant garden by building a cardboard-like structure into which epiphyte seeds are integrated. Following the growth of the epiphyte, the colony establishes its nest within the root system. This particular nest-building behavior is crucial in an environment where suitable nest sites are rare. Nevertheless, the slow growing process of ant gardens does not allow this species to readily evacuate and find another refuge in the advent of an attack by a predator or worsening climatic conditions. Previous field studies of P. goeldii were performed after forest destruction and subsequent colonization by P. goeldii. As a result, the colonies studied where relatively young and monodomous (i.e. one nest per colony). Our study of nest composition, worker exchanges between ant gardens in the field, and dyadic encounters shows that mature colonies of P. goeldii are polydomous (i.e. multiple nests per colony). In ants, the association of polydomy with monogyny has infrequently been reported. To our knowledge, P. goeldii represents the first record of a Ponerinae exhibiting both these particular characteristics. Our field and laboratory experiments suggest that polydomy is adaptively advantageous in coping with the microclimatic instability of pioneer areas by providing colonies with easily accessible nests.  相似文献

Animals are often forced to accommodate disturbance to their territories or nests. When nest relocation becomes necessary, it is important to efficiently evaluate alternative nest sites to choose the one most suitable under current conditions. However, if time is limiting, species may experience a speed-versus-accuracy trade-off when searching for a new home. We examined nest site selection under duress (in the form of flooding) in two species of ants: Linepithema humile and Tapinoma sessile. We predicted that if ants are able to assess and evacuate to the most suitable location, colonies should move to higher elevation, relative to their current nest site, in response to flooding. To test for a speed-versus-accuracy trade-off, we presented colonies with new nest chambers that were either higher, lower, or at the same height as their current nest and examined if their ability to efficiently choose a new site was influenced by the rate of flooding. When flooding rates were slow, both species favored the highest nest site and nearly always moved their entire nest to the same chamber. However, when the rate of flooding was doubled, colonies of T. sessile less often chose the highest nest site and were also more likely to split their nests between two of the available chambers. These results demonstrate a trade-off between speed and accuracy in nest site selection for odorous house ants, while L. humile retained their ability to adequately assess new nest sites under the conditions we presented. These patterns may arise from differences in exploratory behavior and activity between the two species. Despite having identical colony sizes, L. humile had approximately ten times more workers exploring the alternate nest sites 30 min into the experiment than did T. sessile.  相似文献

Field observations have demonstrated that internest hostilityis negatively correlated with the distance between nests inthe Japanese queenless ant, Pristomyrmex pungens. This runscounter to the "dear enemy" phenomenon. This result led us tohypothesize the existence of encounter-induced hostility inP. pungens. We created "neighbor(s)" and "stranger(s)" by anexperimental method and tested the ant's ability to discriminatethe neighbors from strangers. The results indicated that theant could distinguish the neighbors from the strangers and displayedsignificantly stronger hostility toward the neighbors. The recognitionof neighbors was quickly established after a few encountersand was maintained for at least 10 days after the most recentencounter. Nest mates without direct encounter experience withneighbors did not show hostile behavior toward neighbors. Thesefindings suggest that information about neighbors (probablycolony odor) is not transmitted to nest mates within the colonies.Aggressiveness toward the neighbors appears to be caused andmaintained on the basis of individual memories from direct contact.It may be adaptive for a species that changes nest sites frequentlyto discriminate strangers from neighbors and selectively attackthe latter.  相似文献

We assessed patterns of new queen recruitment in a polygyne(multiple queens per nest) population of the fire ant Solenopsisinvicta in its introduced range. Newly recruited queens wereidentified using four physiological markers, and genotypic datafrom nuclear and mitochondrial markers were used to estimaterelatedness of new nest mate queens to each other and to theolder nest mate queens. In total, 1.7% of the queens collectedin late spring and early summer were deemed to be new recruits.The relatedness of these queens to each other and to the olderqueens within nests was not significantly different from zero,suggesting that newly recruited queens represent a random sampleof potential reproductive queens in the population. Moreover,the number of new queens recruited within nests was not correlatedwith the number of older queens present and did not differ significantlyfrom a Poisson distribution. Thus, queen recruitment in this populationof S. invicta appears to occur at random with respect to thenumber of older queens present within nests.  相似文献

Summary: Leptothorax acervorum, an ant species with holarctic range, occurs in an isolated population in the Spanish Sierra de Albarracin. Dissection of dealate females and laboratory observations revealed that in contrast to other European populations, the colonies are monogynous, with one reproductive queen each and a variable number of virgin or mated dealate but not laying females. Most of the latter probably just hibernate in the mother nests, leaving them in the following spring, but a few remain there for longer time, without reproducing. Such colonies then are functionally monogynous. Alate females exhibit a stationary sexual calling, and mating behavior could be studied in the laboratory. Mated females return to the mother nest where they soon shed wings. When developing fertility before or after hibernation they are evicted from the nests; in nature they probably form daughter colonies. Patchy habitat and rough climatic conditions in the Sierra de Albarracin may be responsible for the particular reproductive behavior of L. acervorum in this area. The generally small size difference between queens and workers in the subgenus Leptothorax entails high costs of dispersal and colony foundation by single queens who have to forage for their first brood. Some kind of dependent colony foundation therefore is frequently met with in the subgenus. Notwithstanding the marked biological and a few slight morphological differences between central European L. acervorum and the Spanish population its taxonomic status as yet is unsettled. We refer to this population provisionally as "L. acervorum Albarracin".  相似文献
