1. Laser vibrometry and acoustic measurements were used to study the biophysics of directional hearing in males and females of a cicada, in which most of the male tympanum is covered by thick, water filled tissue “pads”. 2. In females, the tympanal vibrations are very dependent on the direction of sound incidence in the entire frequency range 1–20 kHz, and especially at the main frequencies of the calling song (3–7 kHz). At frequencies up to 10 kHz, the directionality disappears if the contralateral tympanum, metathoracic spiracle, and folded membrane are blocked with Vaseline. This suggests some pressure-difference receiver properties in the ear. 3. In males, the tympanal vibrations depend on the direction of sound incidence only within narrow frequency bands (around 1.8 kHz and at 6–7 kHz). At frequencies above 10–12 kHz, the directionality appears to be determined by diffraction, and the ear seems to work as a pressure receiver. The peak in directionality at 6–7 kHz disappears when the contralateral timbal, but not the tympanum, is covered. Covering the thin ventral abdominal wall causes the peak around 1.8 kHz to disappear. 4. Most observed tympanal directionalities, except around 1.8 kHz in males, are well predicted from measured transmissions of sound through the body and measured values of sound amplitude and phase at the ears at various directions of sound incidence. We studied the directionality of spike rate responses of auditory nerve fibers of the grassfrog, Rana temporaria, to pure tone stimuli. All auditory fibers showed spike rate directionality. The strongest directionality was seen at low frequencies (200 – 400 Hz), where the spike rate could change by up to nearly 200␣spikes s−1. with sound direction. At higher frequencies the directional spike rate changes were mostly below 100 spikes s−1. In equivalent dB SPL terms (calculated using the fibers' rate-intensity curves) the maximum directionalities were up to 15 dB at low frequencies and below 10 dB at higher frequencies. Two types of directional patterns were observed. At frequencies below 500 Hz relatively strong responses were evoked by stimuli from the ipsilateral (+90o) and contralateral (−90o) directions while the weakest responses were evoked by stimuli from frontal (0o or +30o) or posterior (−135o) directions. At frequencies above 800 Hz the strongest responses were evoked by stimuli from the ipsilateral direction while gradually weaker responses were seen as the sound direction shifted towards the contralateral side. At frequencies between 500 and 800 Hz both directional patterns were seen. The directionality was highly intensity dependent. No special adaptations for localization of conspecific calls were found. Several anabantoid species produce broad-band sounds with high-pitched dominant frequencies (0.8–2.5 kHz), which contrast with generally low-frequency hearing abilities in (perciform) fishes. Utilizing a recently developed auditory brainstem response recording-technique, auditory sensitivities of the gouramis Trichopsis vittata, T. pumila, Colisa lalia, Macropodus opercularis and Trichogaster trichopterus were investigated and compared with the sound characteristics of the respective species. All five species exhibited enhanced sound-detecting abilities and perceived tone bursts up to 5 kHz, which qualifies this group as hearing specialists. All fishes possessed a high-frequency sensitivity maximum between 800 Hz and 1500 Hz. Lowest hearing thresholds were found in T. trichopterus (76 dB re 1 μPa at 800 Hz). Dominant frequencies of sounds correspond with the best hearing bandwidth in T. vittata (1–2 kHz) and C. lalia (0.8–1 kHz). In the smallest species, T. pumila, dominant frequencies of acoustic signals (1.5–2.5 kHz) do not match lowest thresholds, which were below 1.5 kHz. However, of all species studied, T. pumila had best hearing sensitivity at frequencies above 2 kHz. The association between high-pitched sounds and hearing may be caused by the suprabranchial air-breathing chamber, which, lying close to the hearing and sonic organs, enhances both sound perception and emission at its resonant frequency. The mormyrid fish Pollimyrus adspersus has auditory specializations for sound pressure detection and uses acoustic displays in its natural social behavior. In this paper it is shown that auditory neurons in the mesencephalon (torus semicircularis) are activated selectively by temporal features of complex sounds. Single neurons were recorded while presenting sounds to fish underwater. The stimuli were acoustic click trains, 400 ms in duration, and were synthesized with differing inter-click-intervals (ICIs). The natural sounds of this species are composed similarly and the range of ICIs synthesized overlapped with the natural range (5–40 ms). One-third of the neurons studied were strongly selective for a narrow range of ICIs, increasing spike rate by ten fold or more at the best ICI compared to the minimum response observed. The best ICI for interval selective neurons remained stable when the sound pressure of the stimulus was changed. Neurons that were selective gave phasic responses to tone bursts, and most had non-monotonic rate level functions. The origin of interval selectivity is discussed and a time-based computational mechanism is proposed. Accepted: 20 December 1996  相似文献

In the lesser spear-nosed bat, Phyllostomus discolor, maternal directive calls are characterized by an individual type of sinusoidal frequency modulation (= SFM) pattern. Beside modulation frequency, modulation depth, carrier frequency, and number of modulation cycles per call contribute to the mother's vocal signature. Since juvenile P. discolor learn to adapt their isolation calls to the corresponding call characteristics of the own mother or even to playback of a computer-stored directive call, if hand-reared in the absence of conspecifics, the bats' auditory system ought to be able to resolve interindividual differences in communication call structure. However, quantitative psychoacoustic data on the discrimination of SFM signals in this species are not available. Thus, in the present study, lesser spear-nosed bats were trained in a two-alternative forced-choice procedure to discriminate between two alternatingly presented SFM sound signals differing in modulation frequency. Other characteristics of acoustic stimuli were identical and designed to mimick the fundamental of species-specific calls. By gradually reducing the difference in modulation frequency between both stimuli within the behavioural relevant range until the animals' performance dropped below the 75%-correct level, a considerable auditory spectro-temporal resolution has been revealed. Particularly in comparison to the overall interindividual variation of this call parameter (minimal modulation frequency = 49 Hz, maximum = 100 Hz), the determined average difference limen for modulation frequency of 2.42 ± 0.29 Hz seems substantial and sufficient for labelling individuals. Responses of auditory neurons in the torus semicircularis (TS) of Pleurodema thaul, a leptodactylid from Chile, to synthetic stimuli having diverse temporal patterns and to digitized advertisement calls of P. thaul and three sympatric species, were recorded to investigate their temporal response selectivities. The advertisement call of this species consists of a long sequence of sound pulses (a pulse-amplitude-modulated, or PAM, signal) having a dominant frequency of about 2000 Hz. Each of the sound pulses contains intra-pulse sinusoidal-amplitude-modulations (SAMs). Synthetic stimuli consisted of six series in which the following acoustic parameters were systematically modified, one at a time: PAM rate, pulse duration, number of pulses, and intra-pulse SAM rate. The carrier frequency of these stimuli was set at the characteristic frequency (CF) of the isolated units (n = 47). Response patterns of TS units to synthetic call variants reveal different degrees of selectivities for each of the temporal variables, with populations of neurons responding maximally to specific values found in the advertisement call of this species. These selectivities are mainly shaped by neuronal responsiveness to the overall sound energy of the stimulus and by the inability of neurons to discharge to short inter-pulse gaps. The heat increment of feeding (HIF), a transient postprandial increase in metabolic rate, is the energy cost of processing a meal. We measured HIF in house wren chicks (Troglodytes aedon) ranging in mass from 1.6 to 10.3 g. This mass range (age 2–10 days) spanned a transition from blind, naked, ectothermic chicks through alert, endothermic birds with nearly complete feathering. We fed chicks crickets (2.7–10% of chick body mass) and determined HIF from continuous measurements of oxygen consumption rate (O2) before and after meals. At warm ambient temperatures (T a) of 33–36 °C, the magnitude of HIF (in ml O2 or joules) was linearly related to meal mass and was not affected by chick mass. HIF accounted for 6.3% of ingested energy, which is within the range of results for other carnivorous vertebrates. The duration of HIF was inversely related to chick mass; 10-g chicks processed a standard meal approximately twice as fast as 2-g chicks. HIF duration increased with increasing meal mass. The peak O2 during HIF, expressed as the factorial increase above resting metabolism, was independent of body mass and meal mass. In large, endothermic chicks ( > 8 g), HIF substituted for thermoregulatory heat production at low T a. Accepted: 11 December 1996  相似文献

The effects of l-arginine, and its analogues N ω-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester and N ω-nitro-l-arginine on vascular resistance were investigated in the intact coronary system of an isolated non-working trout heart preparation. l-Arginine, at 10–8 mol · l–1induced a slight vasodilatory effect (max 10%). N ω-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester and N ω-Nitro-l-arginine in the range 10–8–10–4 mol · l–1 caused dose-dependent increases in coronary resistance. The vasodilatory action of l-arginine was abolished when the preparation was pretreated with 10–4 mol · l–1 N ω-nitro-l-arginine or N ω-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester. Nitroprusside alone at 1 mmol · l–1 induced a maximum vasodilation (30%) of the coronary system. Methylene blue a known inhibitor of guanylate cyclase, induced a strong vasoconstriction (already significant at 10–5 mol · l–1) and was able to overcome the vasodilative effect of nitroprusside. The endothelial nitric oxide agonists acetylcholine and serotonin, established in mammalian vessels, also mediate vasodilation in trout coronary system. In 50% of preparations, acetylcholine induced a biphasic response with vasodilation at low concentration (max 15% at 10–8 mol · l–1). Serotonin displayed a dose-response vasodilation in the range 10–8–10–4 mol · l–1 (max 20%). These vasodilative effects were reduced or abolished by 10–4 mol · l–1 l-NA. These data support the existence of NO-mediated vasodilation mechanisms in the trout coronary system. Accepted: 1 July 1996  相似文献

In this study we recorded auditory brainstem responses to airborne sounds to determine the hearing sensitivity of Xenopus laevis frogs and correlated their hearing profiles with middle ear characteristics. In newly metamorphosed frogs (body mass 0.5–0.76 gm, snout-vent length 17–20 mm) best hearing sensitivities were measured in the 2.4–2.8 kHz range, whereas optimal hearing sensitivity of older adults (body mass 18–90 gm; snout-vent length 57–100 mm) ranged from 1.0 to 1.2 kHz. Middle ear volumes reconstructed from serial sections showed approximate volume of 0.002 cc and 0.04–0.07 cc in newly metamorphosed and older frogs, respectively. This inverse frequency–volume relationship is consistent with the properties of an acoustic resonator indicating that differences in best hearing sensitivity are at least in part correlated to variation in middle ear volumes for airborne sounds. These results are consistent with peak frequency vibrational velocity profiles of Xenopus tympanic disk that have been shown to be dependent on underlying middle ear volumes and corroborate the occurrence of peak amplitudes of otoacoustic emissions in the 1.0–1.2 kHz region in adult Xenopus frogs.  相似文献

In the mustached bat, the central auditory system contains FM–FM (delay-tuned) neurons which are specialized for processing target-distance information carried by echo delays. Mechanisms for creating the FM–FM neurons involve delay lines, coincidence detection and amplification. A neural basis for delay lines can be a map representing response latencies. The aim of the present study is to explore whether the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus has a latency axis incorporated into iso-best frequency slabs. Responses of single or multiple neurons were recorded from the inferior colliculus of unanesthetized mustached bats with tungsten-wire electrodes, and their response latencies were measured with tone bursts at their best frequencies and best amplitudes or 65 dB SPL. In the dorsoventral electrode penetrations across the inferior colliculus, response latency systematically shortens from ˜12 to ˜4␣ms. Tonotopic representation in the inferior colliculus is somewhat complex. Iso-best frequency slabs are tilted and/or curved, but they orient more or less ventrodorsally. Nevertheless, the latency axis is evident in each iso-best frequency slab, regardless of best frequency. The inferior colliculus has the frequency-vs-latency coordinates. We studied the directionality of spike timing in the responses of single auditory nerve fibers of the grass frog, Rana temporaria, to tone burst stimulation. Both the latency of the first spike after stimulus onset and the preferred firing phase during the stimulus were studied. In addition, the directionality of the phase of eardrum vibrations was measured. The response latency showed systematic and statistically significant changes with sound direction at both low and high frequencies. The latency changes were correlated with response strength (spike rate) changes and were probably the result of directional changes in effective stimulus intensity. Systematic changes in the preferred firing phase were seen in all fibers that showed phaselocking (i.e., at frequencies below 500–700 Hz). The mean phase lead for stimulation from the contralateral side was approximately 140° at 200 Hz and decreased to approximately 100° at 700 Hz. These phaseshifts correspond to differences in spike timing of approximately 2 ms and 0.4 ms respectively. The phaseshifts were nearly independent of stimulus intensity. The phase directionality of eardrum vibrations was smaller than that of the nerve fibers. Hence, the strong directional phaseshifts shown by the nerve fibers probably reflect the directional characteristics of extratympanic pathways. Accepted: 23 November 1996  相似文献

Carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) were studied in evergreen and deciduous forest ecosystems in semi-arid Utah (Pinus contorta, Populus tremuloides, Acer negundo and Acer grandidentatum). Measurements were taken in four to five stands of each forest ecosystem differing in overstory leaf area index (LAI) during two consecutive growing seasons. The δ13Cleaf (and carbon isotope discrimination) of understory vegetation in the evergreen stands (LAI 1.5–2.2) did not differ among canopies with increasing LAI, whereas understory in the deciduous stands (LAI 1.5–4.5) exhibited strongly decreasing δ13Cleaf values (increasing carbon isotope discrimination) with increasing LAI. The δ13C values of needles and leaves at the top of the canopy were relatively constant over the entire LAI range, indicating no change in intrinsic water-use efficiency with overstory LAI. In all canopies, δ13Cleaf decreased with decreasing height above the forest floor, primarily due to physiological changes affecting c i/c a (> 60%) and to a minor extent due to δ13C of canopy air (< 40%). This intra-canopy depletion of δ13Cleaf was lowest in the open stand (1‰) and greatest in the denser stands (4.5‰). Although overstory δ13Cleaf did not change with canopy LAI, δ13C of soil organic carbon increased with increasing LAI in Pinus contorta and Populus tremuloides ecosystems. In addition, δ13C of decomposing organic carbon became increasingly enriched over time (by 1.7–2.9‰) for all deciduous and evergreen dry temperate forests. The δ13Ccanopy of CO2 in canopy air varied temporally and spatially in all forest stands. Vertical canopy gradients of δ13Ccanopy, and [CO2]canopy were larger in the deciduous Populus tremuloides than in the evergreen Pinu contorta stands of similar LAI. In a very wet and cool year, ecosystem discrimination (Δe) was similar for both deciduous Populus tremulodies (18.0 ± 0.7‰) and evergreen Pinus contorta (18.3 ± 0.9‰) stands. Gradients of δ13Ccanopy and [CO2]canopy were larger in denser Acer spp. stands than those in the open stand. However, 13C enrichment above and photosynthetic draw-down of [CO2]canopy below tropospheric baseline values were larger in the open than in the dense stands, due to the presence of a vigorous understory vegetation. Seasonal patterns of the relationship δ13Ccanopy versus 1/[CO2]canopy were strongly influenced by precipitation and air temperature during the growing season. Estimates of Δe for Acer spp. did not show a significant effect of stand structure, and averaged 16.8 ± 0.5‰ in 1933 and 17.4 ± 0.7‰ in 1994. However, Δe varied seasonally with small fluctuations for the open stand (2‰), but more pronounced changes for the dense stand (5‰). Received: 15 April 1996 / Accepted: 19 October 1996  相似文献

This study investigated the effects on running economy (RE) of ingesting either no fluid or an electrolyte solution with or without 6% carbohydrate (counterbalanced design) during 60-min running bouts at 80% maximal oxygen consumption (O2max). Tests were undertaken in either a thermoneutral (22–23°C; 56–62% relative humidity, RH) or a hot and humid natural environment (Singapore: 25–35°C; 66–77% RH). The subjects were 15 young adult male Singaporeans [O2max = 55.5 (4.4 SD) ml kg−1 min−1]. The RE was measured at 3 m s−1 [65 (6)% O2max] before (RE1) and after each prolonged run (RE2). Fluids were administered every 2 min, at an individual rate determined from prior tests, to maintain body mass (group mean = 17.4 ml min−1). The O2 during RE2 was higher (P < 0.05) than that during the RE1 test for all treatments, with no differences between treatments (ANOVA). The mean increase in O2 from RE1 to RE2 ranged from 3.4 to 4.7 ml kg−1 min−1 across treatments. In conclusion, the deterioration in RE at 3 m s−1 (65% O2max) after 60 min of running at 80% O2max appears to occur independently of whether fluid is ingested and regardless of whether the fluid contains carbohydrates or electrolytes, in both a thermoneutral and in a hot, humid environment. The matched filter hypothesis proposes that the tuning of auditory sensitivity and the spectral character of calls will match in order to maximize auditory processing efficiency during courtship. In this study, we analyzed the acoustic structure of male calls and both male and female hearing sensitivities in the little torrent frog (Amolops torrentis), an anuran species who transmits acoustic signals across streams. The results were in striking contradiction to the matched filter hypothesis. Auditory brainstem response results showed that the best hearing range was 1.6–2 kHz consistent with the best sensitive frequency of most terrestrial lentic taxa, yet completely mismatched with the dominant frequency of conspecific calls (4.3 kHz). Moreover, phonotaxis tests show that females strongly prefer high‐frequency (4.3 kHz) over low‐frequency calls (1.6 kHz) regardless of ambient noise levels, although peripheral auditory sensitivity is highest in the 1.6–2 kHz range. These results are consistent with the idea that A. torrentis evolved from nonstreamside species and that high‐frequency calls evolved under the pressure of stream noise. Our results also suggest that female preferences based on central auditory system characteristics may evolve independently of peripheral auditory system sensitivity in order to maximize communication effectiveness in noisy environments.  相似文献

The characteristics of absolute auditory sensitivity of the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) in the transverse plane have been measured using short broadband stimuli simulating dolphin clicks (with energy maximum at frequencies 8, 16, 30, 50 and 100 kHz). Experiments were performed using the method of conditioned reflexes with food reinforcement. It is shown that, in the frequency range of 8–30 kHz, the absolute sensitivity of dolphin hearing in any ventral and lateral directions of the transverse plane is only 2–8 dB worse than in the rostral direction. Moreover, it is 25–30 dB better than at 50–100 kHz. At 8–30 kHz, pronounced dorsoventral asymmetry has been observed. In this frequency range, it reaches 15–18 dB whereas at 50–100 kHz this asymmetry decreases to 2–3 dB. In the dorsal direction, the auditory sensitivity is 18 dB worse than in the rostral one at ∼8 kHz, and the difference rises smoothly to 33 dB at ∼100 kHz. At 50–100 kHz, the acoustical thresholds in the transverse plane relative to those for the with rostral direction get worse almost uniformly in all directions by 25–33 dB. As a result, in the transverse plane the beam patterns are nearly circular, unlike those at 8–30 kHz. The results are discussed in terms of the model of sound perception through the left and right mental foramens. The biological relevance of such asymmetry is emphasized.  相似文献

In order to examine the influence of differences in food conditions on gut characteristics in Porcellio scaber, pH-manipulated and microbially inoculated leaf litter from three different tree species were offered. Microbial activity was clearly influenced by the pH levels of the leaves. Analyses of the pH levels in the gut indicated the ability of P. scaber to buffer the pH value in the intestinal tract to about 5.5–6.0 in the anterior hindgut, and to about 6.0–6.5 in the posterior hindgut. The pH levels of the gut sections remained in this range, within a range of food pH from 4.0 to 7.5, no matter what kind of leaves the animals were fed. Homeostatic responses to changes in food pH guarantee optimized digestion of leaf litter. However, when the pH level of the litter dropped below 3.5, P. scaber was not able to maintain the pH conditions in the gut. Furthermore, microorganisms colonizing the litter biased the pH level in the anterior hindgut where digestive processes mainly take place. These results indicate a decline of litter quality with regard to the nutrition of terrestrial isopods, caused by acidification and consequently reduced microbial activity. The effect of a 3-week exercise programme on performance and economy of walking was analysed in 16 male patients with chronic heart failure [mean age 51.8 (SD 6.9) years, height 174.9 (SD 6.3) cm, body mass 75.3 (SD 11.5) kg, ejection fraction 20.8 (SD 5.0)%]. They were submitted to a cardiopulmonary exercise test on a cycle ergometer and a 6-min walking test on a treadmill before and after the period of exercise training. The training programme consisted of interval cycle (five times a week for 15 min), and treadmill ergometer training (three times a week for 10 min) at approximately 70% cycling peak oxygen uptake (O2peak) and supplementary exercises (three times a week for 20 min). Compared to the pre values cycling O2peak [11.9 (SD 2.9) vs 14.0 (SD 2.3) ml ·  kg–1 · min–1], maximal self paced walking speed [0.68 (SD 0.33) vs 1.16 (SD 0.30) m · s–1], and net walking power [2.16 (SD 0.89) vs 2.73 (SD 0.91) W · kg–1] had increased (P < 0.01) while net energy cost [3.31 (SD 0.66) vs 2.33 (SD 0.38) J · kg–1 ·  m–1] had decreased (P < 0.001) after the training period. Approximately 42% of the increase of walking speed resulted from a higher walking power output, whereas approximately 58% corresponded to a positive effect on walking economy. The improvement in walking economy was a function of an increase in walking velocity itself and a result of a more efficient walking technique. These results would indicate that in patients with marked exercise intolerance, adequate exercise training programmes could contribute to favourable metabolic changes with positive effects on the economy of motion. Responses of 117 single- or multi-units in the auditory cortex (AC) of bats (Myotis lucifugus) to tone bursts of different stimulus durations (1– 400 ms) were studied over a wide range of stimulus intensities to determine how stimulus duration is represented in the AC. 36% of AC neurons responded more strongly to short stimulus durations showing short-pass duration response functions, 31% responded equally to all pulse durations (i.e., all-pass), 18% responded preferentially to stimuli having longer durations (i.e., long-pass), and 15% responded to a narrow range of stimulus durations (i.e., band-pass). Neurons showing long-pass and short-pass duration response functions were narrowly distributed within two horizontal slabs of the cortex, over the rostrocaudal extent of the AC. The effects of stimulus level on duration selectivity were evaluated for 17 AC neurons. For 65% of these units, an increase in stimulus intensity resulted in a progressive decrease in the best duration. In light of the unusual intensity-dependent duration responses of AC neurons, we hypothesized that the response selectivities of AC neurons is different from that in the brainstem. This hypothesis was validated by results of study of the duration response characteristics of single neurons in the inferior colliculus. Accepted: 8 November 1996  相似文献

While searching for prey, Molossus molossus broadcasts narrow-band calls of 11.42 ms organized in pairs of pulses that alternate in frequency. The first signal of the pair is at 34.5 kHz, the second at 39.6 kHz. Pairs of calls with changing frequencies were only emitted when the interpulse intervals were below 200 ms. Maximum duty cycles during search phase are close to 20%. Frequency alternation of search calls is interpreted as a mechanism for increasing duty cycle and thus the temporal continuity of scanning, as well as increasing the detection range. A neurophysiological correlate for the processing of search calls was found in the inferior colliculus. 64% of neurons respond to frequencies in the 30- to 40-kHz range and only in this frequency range were closed tuning curves found for levels below 40 dB SPL. In addition, 15% of the neurons have double-tuned frequency-threshold curves with best thresholds at 34 and 39 kHz. Differing from observations in other bats, approach calls of M. molossus are longer and of higher frequencies than search calls. Close to the roost, the call frequency is increased to 45.0–49.8 kHz and, in addition, extremely broadband signals are emitted. This demonstrates high plasticity of call design.Abbreviations BF best frequency - CF constant frequency - IC inferior colliculus - Fmax maximal frequency - Fmin minimal frequency - PF peak frequency - PSTH post-stimulus time histogram - QCF quasi-constant frequency - SPL sound pressure level  相似文献

Five water monitor lizards, Varanus salvator salvator, and four clouded monitor lizards, Varanus bengalensis nebulosus, were caught on Tioman island in Malaysia. A radio-thermistor transmitter was implanted into the buccal cavity of each animal, and they were released into an enclosure measuring 5.5 × 6.5 metres. The lizards were observed for 9 and 8 days, respectively, before and after the parietal eye was covered with aluminium foil. With uncovered parietal eye, both species showed a clear diurnal rhythm, being active only during day time. After covering the parietal eye, the mean locomotor activity of five V. s. salvator decreased from 791 to 107 min · day–1 but remained unchanged around 850 min · day–1 for V. b. nebulosus. The mean duration of locomotor activity decreased in V. s. salvator and V. b. nebulosus after the parietal eye was covered, but V. b. nebulosus maintained its locomotor activity by increasing the number of locomotor bouts. The water monitor spent very little time on thermoregulation. Its body temperature ranged between 26.3 and 28.4 °C, which decreased after the parietal eye was covered. The clouded monitor thermoregulated around 28.8–36.0 °C, which remained unchanged after the parietal eye was covered. In both species, there was a strong correlation between body temperature and ambient temperature. Behavioural abnormalities were recorded among V. s. salvator with covered parietal eye. They were often observed to be active by night and often slept outside a burrow. The circadian rhythm of V. b. nebulosus appeared unaffected by shielding of its parietal eye. Captivity combined with shielded parietal eye induced agonistic behaviour in both species. Accepted: 11 September 1996  相似文献
