Two endogenous biorhythms of the mass specific rate of oxygen consumption with periods of 10.3 and 7.2 weeks have been revealed in the late postlarval ontogenesis of freshwater gastropods Lymnaea stagnalis by singular spectrum analysis. It has been determined that local maxima of both biorhythms in different individuals occur at the same age; in addition to that, the periods of biorhythms are approximately the same in all studied animals and remain unchanged during the whole individual development. It has been noted that the biorhythm with a period of 10.3 weeks is damped (its amplitude decreases from 8 μL O2/(h g) at the age of 20 weeks to 3 μL O2/(h g) at the time of death), and the biorhythm with the period of 7.2 weeks is sustained (its average amplitude is 2.4 ± 0.4 μL O2/(h g).  相似文献

It was demonstrated that individual linear growth of the Margaritifera margaritifera freshwater bivalve mollusk in Syuskyuyanioki River is accompanied by natural biorhythms. The periods of biorhythms, as well as growth retardation coefficients, vary widely and differ in different individuals. The periods of biorhythms in individual ontogenesis are approximately constant. Mean values of the growth retardation coefficients and periods do not depend on the biotope and are 0.114 ± 0.003 year–1 and 3.88 ± 0.06 years, respectively. The possibility of thermodynamic nature of biorhythms is discussed.  相似文献

At present, research activities on the role of orchard systems in sequestering atmospheric CO2 remain scarce. This paper aimed to contribute to assessing the carbon balance of a Mediterranean olive (Olea europea) orchard. The net ecosystem exchange, the ecosystem respiration and the gross primary production were computed for two consecutive years through eddy covariance, and the different biomass accumulation terms were also inferred in the same period through an inventorial method. The net carbon exchange ranged from 13.45 t(C) ha?1 year?1 to 11.60 t(C) ha?1 year?1. Very similar values [12.2 and 11.5 t(C) ha?1 year?1] were found with the direct carbon accumulation inventory. The intensive farming management (irrigation included) and the young age of the plants (12–16 years old), still in an active growing phase, led the olive plantation to be a higher carbon sink with respect to other evergreen orchards reported in the literature.  相似文献

Monitoring changes in vegetation growth has been the subject of considerable research during the past several decades, because of the important role of vegetation in regulating the terrestrial carbon cycle and the climate system. In this study, we combined datasets of satellite‐derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and climatic factors to analyze spatio‐temporal patterns of changes in vegetation growth and their linkage with changes in temperature and precipitation in temperate and boreal regions of Eurasia (> 23.5°N) from 1982 to 2006. At the continental scale, although a statistically significant positive trend of average growing season NDVI is observed (0.5 × 10?3 year?1, P = 0.03) during the entire study period, there are two distinct periods with opposite trends in growing season NDVI. Growing season NDVI has first significantly increased from 1982 to 1997 (1.8 × 10?3 year?1, P < 0.001), and then decreased from 1997 to 2006 (?1.3 × 10?3 year?1, P = 0.055). This reversal in the growing season NDVI trends over Eurasia are largely contributed by spring and summer NDVI changes. Both spring and summer NDVI significantly increased from 1982 to 1997 (2.1 × 10?3 year?1, P = 0.01; 1.6 × 10?3 year?1P < 0.001, respectively), but then decreased from 1997 to 2006, particularly summer NDVI which may be related to the remarkable decrease in summer precipitation (?2.7 mm yr?1, P = 0.009). Further spatial analyses supports the idea that the vegetation greening trend in spring and summer that occurred during the earlier study period 1982–1997 was either stalled or reversed during the following study period 1997–2006. But the turning point of vegetation NDVI is found to vary across different regions.  相似文献

Ruditapes philippinarum, a venerid clam, is a dominant species in the sandy and muddy areas in the coastal waters of the Marmara Sea. Intensive commercial harvesting of this species is conducted in these regions. We studied the population dynamics of R. philippinarum on the southern coast of the Marmara Sea (Band?rma). Samples were collected on a monthly basis between September 2012 and August 2013. Seasonal von Bertalanffy growth parameters using the length–frequency distribution of R. philippinarum were estimated at L  = 67.50 mm and K = 0.33 year?1, and the seasonal oscillation in growth rate was 0.53. The slowest growth period was in January. The growth performance index and potential lifespan were 3.182 and 8.06 years, respectively. The growth relationship was confirmed to have a positive allometric pattern. The average total mortality rate was estimated to be 0.777 year?1, whereas the natural and fishing mortality rates were 0.539 and 0.238 year?1, respectively. The current exploitation rate of R. philippinarum was 0.306. The recruitment pattern peaked during June–August, and spawning occurred between May and August. The results of this study provide valuable information on the status of R. philippinarum stocks.  相似文献

Analysis of growth and biomass turnover in natural forests of Eucalyptus regnans, the world's tallest angiosperm, reveals it is also the world's most productive forest type, with fire disturbance an important mediator of net primary productivity (NPP). A comprehensive empirical database was used to calculate the averaged temporal pattern of NPP from regeneration to 250 years age. NPP peaks at 23.1 ± 3.8 (95% interquantile range) Mg C ha?1 year?1 at age 14 years, and declines gradually to about 9.2 ± 0.8 Mg C ha?1 year?1 at 130 years, with an average NPP over 250 years of 11.4 ± 1.1 Mg C ha?1 year?1, a value similar to the most productive temperate and tropical forests around the world. We then applied the age‐class distribution of E. regnans resulting from relatively recent historical fires to estimate current NPP for the forest estate. Values of NPP were 40% higher (13 Mg C ha?1 year?1) than if forests were assumed to be at maturity (9.2 Mg C ha?1 year?1). The empirically derived NPP time series for the E. regnans estate was then compared against predictions from 21 global circulation models, showing that none of them had the capacity to simulate a post‐disturbance peak in NPP, as found in E. regnans. The potential importance of disturbance impacts on NPP was further tested by applying a similar approach to the temperate forests of conterminous United States and of China. Allowing for the effects of disturbance, NPP summed across both regions was on average 11% (or 194 Tg C/year) greater than if all forests were assumed to be in a mature state. The results illustrate the importance of accounting for past disturbance history and growth stage when estimating forest primary productivity, with implications for carbon balance modelling at local to global scales.  相似文献

The present study investigated the age, growth, mortality and morphometry of the sand smelt, Atherina boyeri, in the Mala Neretva River estuary (mid‐eastern Adriatic Sea). The study of scale annuli showed that the population is up to 4 years of age. However, most sand smelt are in their first and second year; the numbers of older individuals are very low because they migrate upstream and are heavily fished. The von Bertalanffy parameters for the total sample of sand smelt were found to be L = 13.5 cm, K = 0.37 year?1 and t0 = ?0.97. Overall total mortality was estimated at 1.81 year?1, natural mortality was 0.90 year?1 and fishing mortality was 0.91 year?1.  相似文献

To detect growth differences of European eel Anguilla anguilla along the southern German Baltic coast 728 yellow eels, with total lengths ranging from 256 to 944 mm and ages ranging from 3 to 15 years were collected from six coastal areas from 2005 to 2009. The estimation of the growth performance was based on the otolith increments. The mean growth rate of the female yellow eels varied from 56 to 62 mm?year–1. No significant differences in the mean growth rate were detected between eels from inner and open coastal areas. The overall mean annual increment of eels was estimated at 59 mm?year?1. Specific growth rates (SGR) of female yellow eels decreased with increasing age from 0.68 %?day?1 in the first year to 0.05 %?day?1 in the tenth year. Results indicate that no separation is needed in the development of population models or management initiatives based on the growth performance of eel in inner and open coastal waters of the southern German Baltic coast.  相似文献

A short rotation coppice (SRC) with poplar was established in a randomised fertilisation experiment on sandy loam soil in Potsdam (Northeast Germany). The main objective of this study was to assess if negative environmental effects as nitrogen leaching and greenhouse gas emissions are enhanced by mineral nitrogen (N) fertiliser applied to poplar at rates of 0, 50 and 75 kg N ha?1 year?1 and how these effects are influenced by tree age with increasing number of rotation periods and cycles of organic matter decomposition and tree growth after each harvesting event. Between 2008 and 2012, the leaching of nitrate (NO3 ?) was monitored with self-integrating accumulators over 6-month periods and the emissions of the greenhouse gases (GHG) nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were determined in closed gas chambers. During the first 4 years of the poplar SRC, most nitrogen was lost through NO3 ? leaching from the main root zone; however, there was no significant relationship to the rate of N fertilisation. On average, 5.8 kg N ha?1 year?1 (13.0 kg CO2equ) was leached from the root zone. Nitrogen leaching rates decreased in the course of the 4-year study parallel to an increase of the fine root biomass and the degree of mycorrhization. In contrast to N leaching, the loss of nitrogen by N2O emissions from the soil was very low with an average of 0.61 kg N ha?1 year?1 (182 kg CO2equ) and were also not affected by N fertilisation over the whole study period. Real CO2 emissions from the poplar soil were two orders of magnitude higher ranging between 15,122 and 19,091 kg CO2 ha?1 year?1 and followed the rotation period with enhanced emission rates in the years of harvest. As key-factors for NO3 ? leaching and N2O emissions, the time after planting and after harvest and the rotation period have been identified by a mixed effects model.  相似文献

Biometric-based carbon flux measurements were conducted in a pine forest on lava flow of Mt. Fuji, Japan, in order to estimate carbon cycling and sequestration. The forest consists mainly of Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora) in a canopy layer and Japanese holly (Ilex pedunculosa) in a subtree layer. The lava remains exposed on the ground surface, and the soil on the lava flow is still immature with no mineral soil layer. The results showed that the net primary production (NPP) of the forest was 7.3 ± 0.7 t C ha?1 year?1, of which 1.4 ± 0.4 t C ha?1 year?1 was partitioned to biomass increment, 3.2 ± 0.5 t C ha?1 year?1 to above-ground fine litter production, 1.9 t C ha?1 year?1 to fine root production, and 0.8 ± 0.2 t C ha?1 year?1 to coarse woody debris. The total amount of annual soil surface CO2 efflux was estimated as 6.1 ± 2.9 t C ha?1 year?1, using a closed chamber method. The estimated decomposition rate of soil organic matter, which subtracted annual root respiration from soil respiration, was 4.2 ± 3.1 t C ha?1 year?1. Biometric-based net ecosystem production (NEP) in the pine forest was estimated at 2.9 ± 3.2 t C ha?1 year?1, with high uncertainty due mainly to the model estimation error of annual soil respiration and root respiration. The sequestered carbon being allocated in roughly equal amounts to living biomass (1.4 t C ha?1 year?1) and the non-living C pool (1.5 t C ha?1 year?1). Our estimate of biometric-based NEP was 25 % lower than the eddy covariance-based NEP in this pine forest, due partly to the underestimation of NPP and difficulty of estimation of soil and root respiration in the pine forest on lava flows that have large heterogeneity of soil depth. However, our results indicate that the mature pine forest acted as a significant carbon sink even when established on lava flow with low nutrient content in immature soils, and that sequestration strength, both in biomass and in soil organic matter, is large.  相似文献

Vascular plant bio-photovoltaics (VP-BPV) is a recently developed technology that uses higher plants to harvest solar energy and the metabolic activity of heterotrophic microorganisms in the plant rhizosphere to generate electrical power. In the present study, electrical output and maximum power output variations were investigated in a novel VP-BPV configuration using the crop plant rice (Oryza sativa L.) or an associated weed, Echinochloa glabrescens (Munro ex Hook. f.). In order to compare directly the physiological performances of these two species in VP-BPV systems, plants were grown in the same soil and glasshouse conditions, while the bio-electrochemical systems were operated in the absence of additional energy inputs (e.g. bias potential, injection of organic substrate and/or bacterial pre-inoculum). Diurnal oscillations were clearly observed in the electrical outputs of VP-BPV systems containing the two species over an 8-day growth period. During this 8-day period, O. sativa generated charge ~6 times faster than E. glabrescens. This greater electrogenic activity generated a total charge accumulation of 6.75?±?0.87 Coulombs for O. sativa compared to 1.12?±?0.16 for E. glabrescens. The average power output observed over a period of about 30 days for O. sativa was significantly higher (0.980?±?0.059 GJ?ha?1?year?1) than for E. glabrescens (0.088?±?0.008 GJ?ha?1?year?1). This work indicates that electrical power can be generated in both VP-BPV systems (O. sativa and E. glabrescens) when bacterial populations are self-forming. Possible reasons for the differences in power outputs between the two plant species are discussed.  相似文献

A marine ciliate of the genus Strombidium isolated from a marine rock-pool, was grown bacteriafree in a chemostat continuous culture system and fed on the alga Pavlova (Monochrysis) lutheri Droop, which was also grown in continuous culture. The growth rate of the ciliate was maintained constant whilst the growth rate of the alga was varied, the latter producing little change in its energy content.The specific filtration and ingestion rates of Strombidium were measured and found, in both cases, to vary inversely as a function of the concentration of available algae. The filtration rate showed a range from 2 to 35 μl · ciliate?1 · day?1 whilst the ingestion rate varied from 0.8 to 3.4 J · ciliate?1 · day?1. The efficiency of ingestion remained constant throughout the experiment with a mean of > 91%, the overall growth efficiency also remained constant but with a mean of only 6.5%.The rates and efficiencies are compared with the results obtained by other workers.  相似文献

The somatic and gonad productions of the cirolanid isopod Excirolana armata were analyzed by taking monthly samples from December 2003 to November 2005 on Una beach, S?o Paulo state (24°S), southeastern Brazil. Sampling was performed along three fixed transects established from the base of the foredunes to the waterline. Weight-specific growth rate was used to estimate the E. armata somatic production for 2004 and 2005, separately. The gonad production was estimated based on the monthly reproductive potential (mean number of eggs/embryos per female × monthly abundance of ovigerous females with near-release broods) for 2004. The annual somatic production of E. armata population varied from 15.57 to 17.25?g AFDW m?1?year?1 and the somatic production/biomass ratio (P s/B) from 3.55 to 3.14?year?1 for 2004 and 2005, respectively. The P s/B ratios were higher for males (4.02 and 3.19?year?1 for 2004 and 2005) than for females (3.10?year?1 for both years). The annual gonad production (P g?=?1.07?g AFDW m?1?year?1) contributed about 15 and 6% to the total production (P s?+?P g) of females and the population, respectively. The proportion of gonad to somatic production of females (P g/P s) increased with individual size (ca 90% in the 7.5?mm size class), and the annual weight-specific gonad production (P g/B ratio) was estimated to 0.24?year?1. The high P s/B ratios estimated for E. armata derive from the fast growth of individuals and show the importance of this population to the energy flow on Una beach ecosystem. However, the low percentage of juveniles verified in this population and in other studies of populations of the genus Excirolana is discussed as an important source of underestimation of P s/B ratio.  相似文献

Growth of kelee shad, Hilsa kelee, in the coastal waters of Pakistan was estimated from the lengthfrequency samples. The von Bertalanffy growth equation was L t = 23.10 (1 ? exp (?0.94(t + 0.18))). Estimated parameters of total mortality (Z), natural mortality (M) and fishing mortality (F) were 2.08 year?1, 1.78 year?1, and 0.30 year?1 respectively. The length-at-first capture was Lc = 10.88 cm. Biomass per recruitment (B/R) and yield per recruitment (Y′/R) were 0.87 and 0.031 respectively. The annual exploitation rate was U = 0.12. The exploitation ratio for maximum yield per recruit E max = 0.73 and fishing mortality for maximum yield per recruit F max = 1.52; biological reference point F opt = 0.89 year?1 and F limit = 1.18 year?1. Present estimations showed that the natural mortality was higher than fishing mortality in Hilsa kelee, indicating that the state of the stock is sustainable and the fishery of kelee shad should not be increased beyond current levels in the coastal waters of Pakistan.  相似文献

The existence of egg banks not only ensures the survival of zooplankton through harsh periods, but could also affect microevolutionary dynamics. Whether zooplankton at high latitudes can build up an egg bank in sediments, as occurs at lower latitudes, is still unknown. The distribution and age of viable resting eggs of the calanoid copepod Boeckella poppei Mrázek in sediments of two small freshwater lakes on King George Island were determined by slicing sediment cores at 1-cm intervals. Most viable resting eggs were found near the sediment surface, with abundance sharply declining to very low values at the depth of 5?cm, although eggs were present as deep as 9?cm in the sediments of Yanouhu Lake. The egg abundances in Xihu Lake and Yanouhu Lake were estimated to be 9.2?×?104 and 7.2?×?104?eggs?m?2, respectively. 210Pb dating indicated a relatively constant sedimentation rate (0.023?cm?year?1) in Xihu Lake, which was used to estimate the mean age (46.8?year), the maximum age (195.7?year), and the mortality rate (1.64?% year?1) of resting eggs of B. poppei in Xihu Lake. The accumulation of resting eggs with long-term viability in sediments provided the first evidence for the existence of egg banks in two Antarctic maritime lakes. An egg bank may serve as an overwintering strategy for B. poppei in Antarctica, enhance their ability to cope with random extreme changes, and contribute to their broad distribution.  相似文献

Net production of theEcklonia cava community was monitored on a monthly basis for a year, and annual net production was estimated. Growth rate of blades reached a maximum of about 13 g dry wt·m?2·day?1 in spring and a minimum of about 2 g dry wt·m?2·day?1 in late summer. Annual production of blades was calculated to be 2.84 kg dry wt·m?2·year?1. If the growth of stipes is taken into account, annual net production is estimated to be about 2.9 kg dry wt·m?2·year?1. Standing crop was monitored monthly for two and a half years, and a close negative correlation was found between seasonal change in standing crop and net production. Standing crop reached a maximum of about 3 kg dry wt·m?2 in summer and a minimum of about 1 kg dry wt·m?2 in winter. Low productivity in summer at a period of maximum biomass may be explained by the dense canopy and the large area of reproductive portion occupying a blade, which diminish net assimilation.  相似文献

The garfish Belone belone euxini (Günther, 1866) is a commercially important pelagic fish species in Sinop artisanal fishery, which is showing a decreasing trend in catch results. As a basis for fisheries management a sampling program was carried out between October 2000 and September 2001 along the Turkish coast of the Black Sea, to study the population structure, growth, and reproduction cycle of garfish in the area, and to achieve a rough estimate of exploitation. The length–weight relationship and von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated as W = 0.00076 L3.137, L = 74.64 cm, K = 0.13 year?1, to = ?3.67, respectively. First sexual maturity was estimated at age 2 and at a total length of 38.8 cm for females. The spawning period was from May to September. The total fecundity–length relationship was estimated as F = 0.0041 L4.1086 (r2 = 0.92). Mortality rates were Z = 1.24 year?1, M = 0.23 year?1and F = 1.01 year?1 for total, natural, and fishing mortality, respectively. The exploitation ratio E = 0.81 indicates that the population is heavily exploited.  相似文献

This study investigates aspects of the life history of the polychaete Thoracophelia furcifera on a sandy beach in southern Brazil. Two fixed transects perpendicular to the shoreline in the intertidal zone were sampled fortnightly from May 2008 to April 2009 at low tide. Five T. furcifera samples were collected along each transect and sediment temperature and the salinity of interstitial water were recorded. The material was washed over 0.5- and 0.088-mm sieves, and the width of setiger 8 of each specimen was measured. A total of 5,870 organisms were examined and the estimated parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth curve were L 3.60?mm (Wd8S), K 0.63?year?1, C 0.3 and WP 0.97 (Rn 0.132). Life span was 2.6?years, instantaneous mortality rate Z was 3.8?year?1 and the growth index φ′ 0.91. Mean density ranged from 644.44?±?191.77 to 2,783.33?±?453.64 ind m?2 and mean biomass ranged from 2.52?±?0.55 to 9.52?±?1.83?g?m?2. Recruitment occurred from April to July and ovigerous females were found from June to November. Annual secondary production was 6.582?g?m?2?year?1, mean biomass was 5.638?g?m?2 and turnover rate was 1.167. The high values for density, secondary production and biomass suggest that T. furcifera constitute an important food source. These features of T. furcifera’ life strategy demonstrate the significant role this species plays in ecosystem dynamics.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) biogeochemistry of a mature Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stand subjected to an average total atmospheric N deposition of 48 kg ha?1 year?1 was studied during the period 1992–2007. The annual amount of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in throughfall (TF) averaged 34 kg ha?1 year?1 over the 16-year monitoring period. The throughfall fluxes contained also considerable amounts of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) (5–8.5 kg N ha?1 year?1), which should be incorporated in the estimate of N flux using throughfall collectors. Throughfall DIN fluxes declined at a rate of ?0.9 kg N ha?1 year?1, mainly due to the decreasing TF fluxes of ammonium (NH4), which accounted for 70% to TF DIN. The decrease in TF DIN was accompanied by a decrease in DIN leaching in the seepage water (?1.6 kg N ha?1 year?1), which occurred exclusively as nitrate (NO3 ?). Nitrate losses in the leachate of the forest floor (LFH) equalled the TF NO3 ? delivered to the LFH-layer. On the contrary, about half of the TF NH4 + was retained within the LFH-layer. Approximately 60% of the TF DIN fluxes were leached indicating that N inputs were far in excess of the N requirements of the forest. For DON, losses were only substantial from the LFH-layer, but no DON was leached in the seepage water. Despite the high N losses through nitrate leaching and NO x emission, the forest was still accumulating N, especially in the aggrading LFH-layer. The forest stand, on the contrary, was found to be a poor N sink.  相似文献
