Results of study of the spawning and reproductive behavior of the climbing perch Anabas testudineus in an aquarium are presented. Main specific features of reproduction of this species are revealed. In the performed experiments, climbing perches did not build a nest, did not prepare a spawning substrate, and did not show any forms of parental care. The pre-spawning and spawning behavior of the climbing perch is described, and fecundity and gonadosomatic index are determined. It is shown that intermittent spawning is typical of these fish. Mating system of the climbing perch is either polygamy or promiscuity. Sexual dimorphism in the climbing perch was not found. The eggs of the climbing perch have positive buoyancy and belong to the really pelagic type, which is rare for freshwater fish. Infanticide is a common phenomenon for the climbing perch. Breeding of the given species under aquarium conditions can be exercised without artificial hormonal stimulation, at different sex ratio, and under conditions of stocking density considerably exceeding standard aquacultural recommendations. The main specific features of reproduction of the climbing perch are discussed in relation to evolution of parental care in labyrinth fishes.  相似文献

Temporal variation in reproductive traits of geographically distributed fish is supposed to take place in response to the spatial and environmental variations. With regard to the wide distribution of the European perch in the northern hemisphere, important reproductive traits such as the initiation and duration of the spawning activity are likely to vary in different latitudinal gradients. In this study, reproductive biology of the European perch, Perca fluviatilis, is described, based on 324 specimens caught in the Anzali wetland (southwest Caspian Sea) between June 2008 and May 2009. The gonadosomatic index, oocyte frequency distribution and histological examination suggested a long vitellogenic process (October to February) and a short spawning season (January and February). The size‐frequency distribution of the oocytes showed that this perch is a species with group‐synchronous ovarian development. Ovarian development occurred only in one clutch of oocytes (700–900 μm oocyte diameter) with no indication of maturation of any subsequent clutch in the spawning season. The average of (realized) fecundity (±SD) was estimated to be 16177 ± 5846 eggs in late vitellogenic stage, which was lower than the potential fecundity (17188 ± 6917 eggs). Histological examination of the gonads revealed the existence of atretic oocytes in early vitellogenic stages (October and November). This investigation highlights the temporal variation in the initiation and duration of the reproductive activity of the European perch in this region compared to other geographical regions. The results emphasize the necessity of specific temporal management in fishing of European perch based on spatial differences in reproductive biology.  相似文献

Lake Piediluco is a naturally regulated lake used for hydroelectric purposes. Management of the lake and the eutrophic conditions of its waters have had a negative impact on fish populations, particularly that of Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis L.). In order to increase the natural reproduction of this species, an experimental program was undertaken from 1997 to 2003 to facilitate reproduction by providing artificial spawning substrates. In Lake Piediluco perch spawn from March to May. Egg ribbons ranged in length from 30 to 180 cm and contained from 12,740 to 205,466 eggs. The fraction of degenerated eggs ranged from 0.20% to 63.30% (average 10.20%). The results demonstrate the effectiveness of artificial substrates as suitable substrates for the reproduction of perch. This study aimed to determine the spawning strategy in the Atlantic bobtail squid Sepiola atlantica, in order to add new information to the knowledge of its reproductive strategy. A total of 12 females that spawned in aquaria were examined. Characteristics of the reproductive traits and egg clutches were similar to those of other known Sepiolidae. Clutch size varied from 31 up to 115 eggs. Females of this species had incorporated up to 1.58 times of their body weight into laid eggs. The size of laid eggs showed a positive correlation with maternal body size, supporting the idea that female size is a determinant of egg size. Our data suggest that S. atlantica is an intermittent terminal spawner, and that its spawning strategy comprises group-synchronous ovary maturation, multiple egg laying, and deposition of egg clutches in different locations. The obtained data provide insights for future comparative studies on reproductive allocation.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the Oxleyan pygmy perch Nannoperca oxleyana is described from simultaneous studies of wild populations in north-eastern New South Wales and mature fish held in aquaria. In the wild, 50% of males and females matured at total lengths of 24·0–25·9 and 28·0–29·9 mm, respectively. The species displays sexual dichromatism during the spawning season, with males developing more intense red and brown fin and body colouration, and black pelvic fins. Captive male broodfish displayed territoriality during the breeding season, closely guarding sites within artificial, plant-like substrata in which pairs of fish spawned adhesive eggs. Protracted serial spawning of wild and captive fish occurred from September to April and May at mean water temperatures ≥16·6° C and day length ≥10·7 h. Captive broodfish spawned on an average of 57% of days during the 256 day spawning period. Gonado-somatic indices averaged 0·7% for all ripe males and 4·1–4·2% for all ripe females collected. Mean total and batch fecundities of captive females were 1323 eggs per fish and 7·8 eggs per fish per day, respectively, and relative fecundity was 587 eggs g−1 of body mass. Batch fecundity of wild females was estimated at 7·8 eggs per fish. The adaptive significance of this reproductive strategy in a harsh, variable environment is discussed.  相似文献

A Suite of Adaptations for Intertidal Spawning   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Salt marshes and similar tide-dominated habitats present anunusual challenge for reproduction of resident aquatic organisms.Strong currents, siltation and hypoxia can potentially contributeto reproductive failure through mortality of the eggs or flushingof the eggs and larvae from the habitat. Fundulus heteroclitus,a small brackish water killifish, is a common resident of tidalmarshes along the east coast of North America from Newfoundlandto Florida. The reproductive strategy of this and related speciesis based on aerial incubation of eggs in the high intertidalzone. The eggs are resistant to desiccation and, when fullydeveloped, hatch on immersion. Copulatory behavior and anatomyof accessory reproductive structures are adapted to placementof eggs in protected incubation sites. The gonads of both malesand females mature rhythmically with an endogenous circasemilunarperiod, which is synchronized with the "spring" tides of newand full moons. Spawning occurs on high tides. Embryos developin 9–15 days, and usually hatch on the succeeding springtide series. Reproductive cyclicity in F. heteroclitus and relatedfishes ensures that spawning fish will have access to the highintertidal zone, thereby permitting aerial incubation of eggs.  相似文献

The development of spawning in perch, pike and roach in Lake Geneva has been studied by means of artificial spawning substrates, laid at different depths, from 1984 to 1993. In Lake Geneva, perch spawned in May. A rise of surface water temperature up to 14 °C stimulated spawning activity while bad weather (surface temperature at 10 °C) induced a spread of the spawning period over more than one month. The spawning period was delayed in years when the mean width of perch egg-ribbons was the largest; this corresponded to the biggest females. At the beginning of the spawning period (early in May), perch preferentially chose a depth of 4 m to spawn. In contrast, at the end of the spawning period, maximum spawning intensity was observed at a depth of 12 m. This phenomenon was more pronounced when water temperature rose above 14 °C in the top 4 m while it remained below 12 °C at a depth of 12 m. Pike spawned at the end of April and at the beginning of May in Lake Geneva. They preferred spruce branches among the different spawning substrates that we tested in Lake Vouglans. When the water temperature increased at the surface of Lake Geneva, pike preferred to lay their eggs on substrates set at 3 m depth where the temperature was cooler than in the surface layer (10.5 °C vs 14 °C). Roach spawned during the last two weeks of May or during the first two weeks of June in Lake Geneva, depending on water temperature. Spawning had generally been spread over a week, but a sudden decrease of water temperature could slow spawning intensity. Roach were able to lay their eggs on natural or synthetic substrates, located 0.5 m below the surface near the shore as well as, at a distance of several hundred metres from the shore. The survival of eggs was always above 90% for perch and roach and generally above 70% for pike.  相似文献

Competition for females generally results in some males adopting alternative reproductive tactics to acquire matings. For fish, the ecological and evolutionary consequences of these tactics are not well understood because of an inability to link directly the interactions of individuals on the breeding grounds with genetic data. This study combines behavioural observations with genetic estimates of male reproductive success within an intensively studied wild population of lacustrine brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis). Male brook trout exhibit a conditional reproductive strategy with small males adopting a peripheral position to that of larger dominant males in their proximity to spawning females. Parentage analysis of eggs collected from wild redds confirmed the reproductive success of individual males. Males relegated to peripheral positions during spawning participated frequently in spawning events, but in most cases the first male to spawn was the sole contributor, and no more than two males contributed successfully to a single brood. While behavioural observations of salmonines suggests that reproduction is partitioned among males in a manner dependent upon body size and proximity to spawning females, the genetic evidence from this study suggests a more limited distribution of reproductive success in the field. The genetic contributions of male brook trout are highly skewed towards larger males for this population. A review of the salmonine literature suggests little difference in individual reproductive success for males exhibiting size-related tactics within a conditional mating strategy vs. precocial maturation. Collectively, these genetic studies provide new insights on the evolution of alternative life histories among salmonines.  相似文献

Japanese aucha perch males taking care of eggs and fry are often brood-parasitized by a Japanese minnow. When the minnows are ovipositing in the perch nests, some of the perch eggs in the nests are often eaten by other fishes. The minnows’ eggs are subsequently guarded by the perch males until hatching. Countertactics of the perch against such brood parasitism were examined in a river of western Japan. Perch males did not employ any countertactics such as ejection of parasites’ eggs or nest desertion. On the other hand, perch females avoided spawning in nests with greater numbers of perch eggs and produced smaller clutches during the parasitic period than in the non-parasitic period. These behavior can be regarded as anti-parasitism tactics because minnows prefer to spawn in nests with higher numbers of perch eggs.  相似文献

1. For many fish species, survival during early life stages is linked to the size and energetic condition of females prior to reproduction. For example, females in good energetic condition are often more fecund and produce larger eggs and offspring than those in poor condition. 2. We measured the characteristics of female yellow perch (Perca flavescens) that may influence annual population fluctuations. From 2005 to 2007, we measured spatial variation in female reproductive traits, such as age, length, mass and energy density (J g?1) of somatic tissues and ovaries among four spawning aggregations of yellow perch in western and central Lake Erie. 3. Maternal traits, such as somatic energy density and spawner age distribution, differed between the western and central basin, whereas reproductive traits, such as fecundity and ovarian energy density, differed across years. 4. To understand the implications of observed differences in demographic rates (growth and mortality rates) between basins, we developed a deterministic model to simulate the total egg production in the western and central basins under different scenarios of fishing mortality. 5. High growth rates and low mortality rates combined to produce higher modelled estimates of total egg production in the central than in the western basin, and a larger proportion of eggs were produced by old age classes in the central basin than in the western basin. 6. Our results demonstrate that changing harvest levels for populations with different demographic rates can influence total reproductive output through complex interactions between age‐specific mortality, growth and size‐specific fecundity, which has implications for the population dynamics of yellow perch and related species across a broad geographic range.  相似文献

Life-history theory predicts that stress responses should be muted to maximize reproductive fitness. Yet, the relationship between stress and reproduction for semelparous salmon is unusual because successfully spawning individuals have elevated plasma cortisol levels. To tease apart the effects of high baseline cortisol levels and stress-induced elevation of cortisol titers, we determined how varying degrees of cortisol elevation (i.e., acute and chronic) affected behavior, reproductive physiology, and reproductive success of adult female pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) relative to different states of ovulation (i.e., ripe and unripe). Exhaustive exercise and air exposure were applied as acute stressors to manipulate plasma cortisol in salmon either confined to a behavioral arena or free-swimming in a spawning channel. Cortisol (eliciting a cortisol elevation to levels similar to those in post-spawn female salmon) and metyrapone (a corticosteroid synthesis inhibitor) implants were also used to chemically manipulate plasma cortisol. Cortisol implants elevated plasma cortisol, and impaired reproductive success; cortisol-treated fish released fewer eggs and died sooner than fish in other treatment groups. In contrast, acute stressors elevated plasma cortisol and the metyrapone implant suppressed plasma cortisol, but neither treatment significantly altered reproductive success, behavior, or physiology. Our results suggest that acute stressors do not influence behavior or reproductive outcome when experienced upon arrival at spawning grounds. Thus, certain critical aspects of salmonid reproduction can become refractory to various stressful conditions on spawning grounds. However, there is a limit to the ability of these fish to tolerate elevated cortisol levels as revealed by experimental elevation of cortisol.  相似文献

Population structure, density and reproductive potential of perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) from 4 acidified lakes in a river system in Southern Norway were investigated. The upper 3 lakes were most affected by acidification and the number of perch caught per unit effort indicate three-fold increase in density from the upper Gjerstadvann to the lower Brøbørvann. Low density of perch in the upper lakes is explained by; 1) Abnormal mortality occurring in episodes due to acidification, probably caused by aluminium toxicity at pH = 5.2–5.4. 2). Acid water (pH ≤ 5.0) during spawning and development of eggs and larvae, resulting in recruitment failure. Juvenile mortality of perch may depend on the density of the parental stock. In the 3 upper lakes, the density of adult perch probably was too low to produce significant juvenile mortality, and in these lakes the recruitment probably depended more on the May water quality. Improved water quality increases egg hatching and survival and also benefits zooplankton production, the main food for perch during the first summer. Low population density has reduced competition for food and thus improved growth of perch in the 3 upper lakes compared to the lower lake. The perch in Brøbørvann mature at higher age and have lower individual fecundity than perch in Gjerstadvann, an effect of both slower growth and lower length specific fecundity in Brøbørvann. In Gjerstadvann, the perch therefore have a higher reproductive potential relative to the stock density, and may, when the water quality is good enough, give rise to strong year-classes and more frequent year-class fluctuations than perch in the less acid Brøbørvann.  相似文献

Synopsis The reproductive performance of the desert pupfish, Cyprinodon n. nevadensis, was tested by exposing breeding pairs to a range of salinities from 0.1 to over 40 In terms of eggs g–1 body weight day–1 , eggs per spawning and embryo viability. reproductive performance was optimal at 10 Performance decreased above and below 11 producing a plateau of statistically equivalent reproductive performance from 0.2 to 20 The upper salinity limit placed on reproduction is the tolerance of the eggs, since a few eggs are laid above 20but they do not hatch. These small fish probably never experience the upper salinity limit for reproduction in their native habitat. The tolerance limits for reproduction are compared with a lethal range from less than 0.1 to 53in a 96 h LD-50 test.  相似文献

Synopsis The white perch,Morone americana, is an east coast estuarine species that invaded Lake Erie in the 1950's, but did not increase in abundance until the mid 1970's. We studied its distribution and feeding during spawning in the Sandusky River, Ohio in 1981–1983. White perch were present in the area from early April through May, but abundance was highest on bedrock riffles about 45 km upstream from Lake Erie. Spawning activity peaked in the last week of April when temperatures approached 18°C. White perch collected in early April had eaten walleye,Stizostedion vitreum vitreum, eggs. As spawning activity of white perch increased, feeding activity declined, and most fish collected during late April contained no food. Egg predation increased again in May, but the eggs eaten then were those of white bass,Morone chrysops, white perch, and possibly other species. We have no evidence that egg predation by white perch has affected walleye or white bass recruitment, but it could become a problem if white perch continue to increase in abundance.  相似文献

Life history theory predicts that the amount of resources allocated to reproduction should maximize an individual's lifetime reproductive success. So far, resource allocation in reproduction has been studied mainly in females. Intraspecific variation of endogenous energy storage and utilization patterns of males has received little attention, although these patterns may vary greatly between individuals pursuing alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs). ARTs are characterized by systematic variation of behavioral, physiological, and often morphological traits among same‐sex conspecifics. Some individuals may rely on previously accumulated reserves, because of limited foraging opportunities during reproduction. Others may be able to continue foraging during reproduction, thus relying on reserves to a lesser extent. We therefore predicted that, if male tactics involve such divergent limitations and trade‐offs within a species, ARTs should correspondingly differ in energy reserve allocation and utilization. To test this prediction, we studied short‐term and long‐term reserve storage patterns of males in the shell‐brooding cichlid Lamprologus callipterus. In this species, bourgeois males investing in territory defense, courtship, and guarding of broods coexist with two distinct parasitic male tactics: (1) opportunistic sneaker males attempting to fertilize eggs by releasing sperm into the shell opening when a female is spawning; and (2) specialized dwarf males attempting to enter the shell past the spawning female to fertilize eggs from inside the shell. Sneaker males differed from other male types by showing the highest amount of accumulated short‐term and long‐term fat stores, apparently anticipating their upcoming adoption of the nest male status. In contrast, nest males depleted previously accumulated energy reserves with increasing nest holding period, as they invest heavily into costly reproductive behaviors while not taking up any food. This conforms to a capital breeder strategy. Dwarf males did not accumulate long‐term fat stores at all, which they can afford due to their small behavioral effort during reproduction and their continued feeding activity, conforming to an income breeder strategy. Our data confirm that the resource storage patterns of males pursuing ARTs can diverge substantially, which adds to our understanding of the coexistence and maintenance of alternative reproductive patterns within species.  相似文献

SUMMARY. In Lake Agios Vasilios, male perch become sexually mature during their first year of life whereas females become sexually mature during their second year. The mean absolute fecundity was 8080 eggs; values ranged from 2080 to 28488. The mean relative fecundity was 141 eggs/g body wet weight (ranging from 113 to 201). The absolute increase in weight of gonads is related to the age of the fish. The spawning period is from the middle of March to the beginning of April, at a mean water temperature of 8°C.  相似文献

There is strong evidence that environmental exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is resulting in significant alterations to the reproductive system of many wildlife populations. Most of these studies measure chemically induced changes to the endocrine system or reproductive morphology and mostly provide simple markers of exposure. The heightened concern over the effects of EDCs is however primarily driven by the hypothesis that this disruption may have serious deleterious consequences on reproductive success. In extensive laboratory studies on breeding populations of zebrafish, I have shown that multigenerational exposure to environmentally relevant levels of endocrine disruptors cause very significant reductions in reproductive success. Lifetime exposure to 5 ng/l of ethynylestradiol, for example, caused complete reproductive failure. These reproductive failures were not caused by exposure proximate to the timing of spawning but by the disruption of development during earlier embryonic and larval sexual differentiation. Histology revealed that male gonads had not differentiated into functional testes. Significantly, these sterile males still initiated spawning in females and resulted in unfertilized eggs. This differential in the sensitivity of behaviour compared to gonadal disruption raises important issues in understanding the implications of endocrine disruption in wild populations. Moreover, the particular mode of reproduction behaviour that is used by a species fundamentally affects the population level impact of endocrine disruptors. This paper will discuss these results and how a greater understanding of the dynamics of group spawning may help in assessing the potential impact of endocrine disruption  相似文献

Based on features of reproduction, whitefishes (Coregonidae) differ from salmonids (Salmonidae) and graylings (Thymallidae). They differ from other salmonid fishes (Salmoniformes) in the following characteristics: they spawn, as a rule, during fall and winter; they do not construct spawning redds; their eggs are not protected; and substantial egg mortality is compensated by a high fecundity. The eggs of several whitefish species can develop in the conditions of “pagon” (within the ice). The main reasons for egg mortality at riverine spawning grounds are as follows: abnormalities during fertilization and development of the embryo, predation on the eggs, parasitic deceases, freezing of spawning grounds, and drift of the eggs from the spawning grounds. In addition (in the lakes), egg mortality can be caused by a deficit of oxygen, siltation, acidulation, and pollution of water. The survival of eggs of whitefishes in the Ural tributaries of the Lower Ob River in different years ranges from 0 to 93%. At a stable environment, the age of sexual maturation is connected with a certain body size of the fish. In the northern water bodies, the cycle of gonadal development can reach more than 1 year. Pollution of water by heavy metals, oil, and toxicants leads to serious anomalies of the reproductive system and to decreasing reproductive potential of the stocks.  相似文献

Synopsis The influence of temperature and the size of reproducing females on the timing of spawning of perch in Lake Geneva has been studied for 10 consecutive years (1984–1993) by means of artificial spawning substrates. The clutch of perch is an egg ribbon with a width proportional to the size of the reproducing female, so that the size structure distribution of the female population can be estimated from measurements of the width of the egg ribbons. The survey of egg-ribbon size revealed a succession of 3 cycles (period of increasing mean size followed by a sharp decrease) lasting 3, 3 and 4 years which were due to the occurrence of 3 strong year classes born in 1982, 1985 and 1988 respectively. This phenomenon can be explained by the effect of intraspecific predation exerted by strong year classes on the offspring of the 2 following years rather than by fluctuations in the success of reproduction in relation to climatic changes. In Lake Geneva, perch spawn in May. The water temperature exerted only a minor influence on the date of the beginning of the spawning period but had a greater effect on its intensity. A rise in temperature in May stimulated spawning while bad weather decreased spawning intensity. The larger perch had a tendency to spawn later than the small ones. The date of the mid-spawning period was well correlated with the yearly mean width of perch egg ribbons but no correlation could be detected between it and the water temperature.  相似文献

Changes in the proportions of river- and lake-produced eggs of a landlocked amphidromous fish, ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis) in the Lake Biwa water system, Japan, were monitored by stable isotope analysis, based on different δ15N and δ13C values of prey organisms between the lake and its tributaries. During the 3 month reproduction season, the δ15N values of spawned eggs decreased with time. This result implies that there was a shift from lake-produced eggs to river-produced eggs within a reproductive season, based on the observation that adult fish in the lake had previously been shown to have eggs with distinctly higher δ15N values in their ovaries than those in the tributaries. This explanation was also supported by the change in δ13C values of the spawned eggs. Furthermore, eggs with lower δ15N and higher δ13C values tended to be spawned at less variable depths, suggesting that females spawning river-produced eggs selected the spawning sites from a narrower range. We conclude that stable isotope ratios of spawned eggs can be indicators of the relative contributions of different food chains and can enable comparisons of reproductive characteristics between types of egg.  相似文献
