Information on the water use of Pinus patula plantations isrequired to predict the impact of forest plantations on waterresources in South Africa. The heat pulse velocity (HPV) methodis a promising technique for measuring water use by trees, andhas been shown to measure sap flows accurately in a varietyof hardwood trees. This method has not been sufficiently verifiedfor pine trees where the presence of a strongly-defined ringstructure in the sapwood gives rise to a complex radial patternof sap flow. The purpose of this study was to compare wateruptake by cut trees to simultaneous HPV sap flow measurementsin the same tree. Fourteen trees were used for this comparison. Results showed that HPV sap flow estimates consistently overestimatedcut-tree uptake by an average of 49%. The bias is attributedto heat averaging across non-conducting latewood rings. Wateruptake was found to be highly correlated to the product of under-barkcross-sectional area and wound-corrected mean HPV, and it issuggested that this empirical relation provides a more appropriateway of estimating water use by this species. Heat pulse velocity (HPV) apparatus was used to investigatethe relation between the radial HPV profile and the positionof growth rings in two Pinus patula trees (aged 4 and 7 years),growing in Frankfort State Forest in the eastern Transvaal,South Africa. Successive measurements of HPV at 3.0 mm intervalsalong each of four radii in each tree revealed a cyclical pattern, with maxima and minima correlated with summer and winter wood, respectively. We recommend that probe emplacement in fast-growingpines with relatively wide growth rings should be to randomly-assigneddepths in the sapwood. Confidence limits associated with samplemeans of wound-corrected HPV obtained with 4, 8 or 12 probesets were generated by simulating the repeated selection ofa randomly-chosen HPV measurement from each sapwood radius. We conclude from this analysis that a minimum of 12 point measurementsper tree is required to obtain an acceptable estimate of sapflow. In older trees where a decline in HPV is expected towardsthe centre of the trunk, sampling must be modified to avoidbias caused by deeper measurements representing proportionatelyless of the total sapwood area than those taken at more shallowdepths in the sapwood. Daily patterns of stomatal conductance (gs), xylem pressure potential (P) and canopy microclimatic variables were recorded on 11 sample days as part of a one-year study of the water use of Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden in the eastern Transvaal, South Africa. Measured gs was found to be largely controlled by quantum flux density (Q) and ambient vapour pressure deficit (D). Canopy conductance (gc) was determined for hourly intervals using gs measurements and leaf areas in four different canopy levels. A simple model was constructed to allow the prediction of gc and transpiration from Q, D and season of year. The model was used to estimate transpiration rates from 10 trees in a later study of similarly-aged E. grandis trees, in which sap flow in each tree was measured using the heat pulse velocity (HPV) technique. Five of the trees were monitored on a summer day and five on a winter day. Correspondence between HPV sap flow and modelled transpiration was good for the summertime comparisons, but measured winter-time sap flow rates were underestimated by the model, especially under conditions of high sap flow. The discrepancy is believed to result from having insufficient data from the conductance study to describe the response of gs to relatively high D in winter. Marked variation in transpiration per unit leaf area indicates that a relatively large number of trees must be sampled for the HPV technique to be used to obtain a mean rate for an entire stand in winter.

The ultrastructure of bordered-pit membranes in normal grandfir trees, Abies grandis (Doug.) Lindl., was compared with thatin trees infested with the blasam woolly aphid, Adelges piceae(Ratz). In sapwood of non-infested trees the membranes of earlywoodpits were well perforated, whereas those of latewood pits wereeither heavily incrusted or incompletely developed and showedfew perforations. In the heartwood pit membranes from both earlywoodand latewood were heavily incrusted. In aphid-infested trees all the pit membranes from the sapwoodwere incrusted and resembled those from heartwood of non-infestedtrees. These incurstations reduced the number of pores in themargo of pit membranes, and could account for the reduced permeabilityto water reported for sapwood trees attacked by the aphid. Wesuggest that the incrustation of pit membranes in sapwood inAbies grandis infested with Adelges piceae occurs because theseaphids cause heartwood to form prematurely.

Five different methods for measuring transpiration, which include gravimetric analysis (control), heat pulse velocity (HPV), time domain reflectometry (TDR), single leaf and whole plant infrared gas-exchange measurements, have been tested on two cultivars (Redcort and Empire) of young apple trees (Malus communis L.). The objective was to compare these methods and establish the most affordable one to be used in greenhouse conditions in order to determine and/or estimate the amount of water for an efficient irrigation management. Results obtained with TDR were particularly accurate and not statistically different with respect to the control (–4.2 %) and this was supported by the correlation coefficient (r = 0.94) found. The HPV method was sufficiently accurate and reliable for small stems, however, in our conditions this method generally underestimated the transpiration (–32.4 %). Single leaf and particularly whole plant infrared gas-exchange measurements suffered an overestimation of the transpiration with respect to the control.

Sap flow in the stems of two cut saplings each of Eucalyptus maculata (a canopy eucalypt forest tree), Doryphora sassafras and Ceratopetalum apetalum (both canopy rainforest trees of south-eastern coastal Australia) was measured by the heat pulse velocity technique and compared with water uptake from a potometer. Scanning electron micrographs of wounding caused by implantation of temperature sensor and heater probes into the sapwood showed that wounding was similar in rainforest and eucalypt species and was elliptical in shape. A circular wound has been implicitly assumed in previous studies. Accurate measurements of sapling water use were obtained using the smaller transverse wound dimension rather than the larger longitudinal dimension because maximum disruption of sap flow through the xylem vessels occurred in the transverse plane. Accurate measurements of sap flux were obtained above a minimum threshold sap velocity. These velocities were 15·7,10·9 and 9·4 cm h?1 for E. maculata, C. apetalum and D. sassafras, respectively. Below the threshold sap velocity, however, sap flow could not be accurately calculated from measurements of heat pulse velocity. The minimum threshold sap velocity appeared to be determined by probe construction and xylem anatomy. Despite the elliptical wounding and inaccurate measurement of sap flow below the threshold sap velocity, total sap flow over the experimental period for two saplings of each species was within 7% of water use measured by the potometer.

Abstract The heat-pulse method was used to estimate transpiration rates continuously for periods up to 2 years in mature trees of Eucalyptus wandoo and Eucalyptus salmonophloia at two topographic locations in a remnant native woodland in the Western Australian wheatbelt. Annual transpiration per tree ranged from about 11400 to 18000 L per tree. Highest transpiration rates occurred in late spring or early summer, depending on rainfall distribution. The trees were able to rapidly utilize water following heavy rain outside the agricultural growing season. Extrapolating transpiration rates from single trees to an area of woodland showed that annual transpiration at the ridge site was 150 mm and 168 mm at a site alongside a drainage line. Scaling up transpiration from individual trees requires caution and should allow for variability in trees and soils. The role of trees in curtailing salinization is discussed.

The water permeability of sapwood and heartwood of Abies grandis(Doug.) Lindl. was found for normal trees and those infestedby balsam woolly aphid Adelges Piceae (Ratz.). It was determinedas the rate of flow of water through plugs of the wood of standarddimensions and under constant suction. The permeability of normaltrees was less in the inner than the outer sapwood and thisdifference was correlated with a greater void space (gas-filledtracheids) in the inner sapwood. The permeability of the heartwoodwas less than 5 per cent that of the sapwood. Aphid infestationreduced the permeability of the outer sapwood to about the samelevel as normal heartwood. The infested wood had a high percentageof void space and again permeability was negatively correlatedwith void space. But for a given level of void space the infestedwood had a much lower permeability than normal wood. This suggeststhat there was factor additional to the air in the tracheids, which contributed to the low permeability of infested wood. The possible nature of this factor is briefly discussed.

Diurnal variation in sap flux (S) through stems of six trees, two each of Ulmus procera SALISB., Melaleuca styphelioides SM. and Prunus cerasifera EHRH. ‘Nigra’ (referred to hereafter by their generic names), were estimated from measurements of heat pulse velocities. Leaf water potential (ψ), stomatal conductance (g s ) and transpiration from leaves (T) of all replicate trees were measured at 1300–1500h, once during the summer. On two separate occasions measurements were made of S, ψ, (g s ) and T for one each of Ulmus and Melaleuca trees to study diurnal variations in these parameters. A 12×12 m2 area around each tree was kept covered to simulate the condition of trees growing on pavements adjacent to residential properties. Sap flux for these tree species was in the order Melaleuca>Ulmus>Prunus. It is suggested that the smaller canopy and sapwood area in Prunus compared to the other two species is responsible for lower water potential and lower transpiration rate than the other species. Detailed analysis of the diurnal variation in sap flux and water relation of leaves of Melaleuca and Ulmus indicated sap flux of Melaleuca to be greater than that of Ulmus at the same transpiration rate per unit leaf area although the sapwood area of the two species was marginally different. This may have been due either to the difference in canopy conductance or in leaf area between the two species. With the assumption that sap flux closely resembles the rate of soil water extraction for both species, results indicate that Melaleuca is likely to extract soil water at a higher rate than Ulmus and hence is capable of causing greater shrinkage and soil movement than Ulmus.

Aims Accurate estimation of forest transpiration in the upper reach of the watershed is vital to the management of water resources in arid region. The objective of this study was to provide a systematic method for calculating the forest evapotranspiration at different scales. Methods In this study we measured the whole-tree transpiration using the heat ratio method technology and estimated the stand- and catchment-transpiration employing the upscaling methods. Important findings The main results and conclusions were as follows: First, the diameter at breast height (DBH) exhibited significant correlations with sapwood area, and the correlation was characterized by the exponential function (R2 = 0.94, p < 0.000 1). Second, in the weighted calculation of sap-flux measurements based on two-point thermocouples and sapwood area of Picea crassifolia, the correction coefficient between the true value and the observation value was 1.09. Third, when calculating sap-fluxes based on the average-sap-flux and total sapwood area of stand-transpiration, ignoring sap-flux velocity heterogeneities of trees led to transpiration rates being overestimated or underestimated by nearly one third; Fourth, the stand-transpiration estimation method based on the relationship between DBH and sap-flux can give a more reasonable prediction of Picea crassifolia transpiration. The results indicated that the probe-based sap-flux measuring technology would perform well for the transpiration scaling-up calculation at the catchment with only one single tree species, and the calculation methodology can be applied to other watersheds. © 2018 Editorial Office of Chinese Journal of Plant Ecology. Sap flows in the xylem of plant roots in response to gradientsin water potential, either between soil and atmosphere (transpiration)or soil layers of different moisture content (termed hydraulicredistribution). The latter has the potential to influence waterbudgets and species interactions, but we lack information forall but a few plant communities. We combined heat pulse measurementsof sap flow with dye and isotope tracing techniques to gaugethe movement of xylem sap within, and exudation from, rootsof Banksia prionotes (Lindley). We demonstrated ‘ hydrauliclift’ during the dry season and provide some evidencethat extremely dry soils limit hydraulic lift. In addition wereport difficulties posed by spiralled xylem tissue in rootsfor the application of heat pulse techniques. Measurement of sap flow in plant stems
Transpiration rates for whole plants, individual branches ortillers can be determined by techniques which measure the rateat which sap ascends stems. All of these methods use heat asa tracer for sap movement, but they are fundamentally differentin their operating principles. Two methods commonly employed, the stem heat balance and trunk sector heat balance methods, use the heat balance principle; the stem is heated electricallyand the heat balance is solved for the amount of heat takenup by the moving sap stream, which is then used to calculatethe mass flow of sap in the stem. In the heat-pulse method, rather than using continuous heating, short pulses of heat areapplied and the mass flow of sap is determined from the velocityof the heat pulses moving along the stem. In addition, ratesof sap flow can be determined empirically, using the thermaldissipation technique, from the temperature of sapwood neara continuously-powered heater implanted in the stem. Users mustunderstand the theory underlying each of these methods, so thatthey can select the method most appropriate to their applicationand take precautions against potential sources of error. Whenattempting to estimate transpiration by stands of vegetationfrom measurements of sap flow in individual plants, users mustalso select an appropriate sampling strategy and scaling method.

Transpiration of a central European endemic tree species, Pinus rotundata Link, growing on a wooded peat bog in the Třeboň Basin, Czech Republic, was studied in 1999–2000. Transpiration was measured by sap flow techniques (heat field deformation method) on individual trees and scaled up to stand level. The radial patterns of sap flow density showed narrow peaks in the outer part of the xylem, sapwood accounted for 47–60% of the xylem radius and 72–84% of the xylem basal area. Adult trees tolerated well both short-term flooding during the growing season and drawdown of the water table to a depth of 60 cm below ground level. The maximum and mean daily transpiration rates were 3.0 and 1.8 mm per day, and were thus similar to published data for Scots pine. The seasonal total transpiration (25 April–20 October 2000, 180 days) amounted to 322 mm, or 62% of the potential evapotranspiration over this period. This canopy transpiration was compensated by 319 mm of precipitation. The difference between the accumulated precipitation and the accumulated transpiration (derived from seasonal sap flow measurements) closely mimicked the seasonal course of the water table.

We show that sapflow is a useful tool for studies of water fluxes in forest ecosystems, because (i) it gives access to the spatial variability within a forest stand, (ii) it can be used even on steep slopes, and (iii) when combined with eddy correlation measurements over forests, it allows separation of individual tree transpiration from the total water loss of the stand. Moreover, sapflow techniques are quite easy to implement. Four sapflow techniques currently coexist, all based on heat diffusion in the xylem. We found a good agreement between three of these techniques. Most results presented here were obtained using the radial flow meter (Granier 1985). Tree sapflow is computed as sap flux density times sapwood area. To scale up from trees to a stand, measurements have to be made on a representative sample of trees. Thus, a number of trees in each circumference class is selected according to the fraction of sapwood they represent in the total sapwood area of the stand. The variability of sap flux density among trees is usually low (CV. 10–15%) in close stands of temperate coniferous or deciduous forests, but is much higher (35–50%) in a tropical rain forest. It also increases after thinning or during a dry spell. A set of 5–10 sapflow sensors usually provides an accurate estimate of stand transpiration. Transpiration measured on two dense spruce stands in the Vosges mountains (France) and one Scot's pine plantation in the Rhine valley (Germany) showed that maximum rate was related to stand LAI and to local climate. Preliminary results comparing the sapflow of a stand of Pinus banksiana to the transpiration of large branches, as part of the BOREAS programme in Saskachewan, Canada showed a similar trend. For modelling purposes, tree canopy conductance (gc) was calculated from Penman-Monteith equation. In most experiments, calculated canopy conductance was dependent on global radiation (positive effect) and on vapour pressure deficit (negative effect) in the absence of other limiting factors. A comparison of the vapour pressure deficit response curves of gc for several tree species and sites showed only small differences among spruce, oak and pine forests when including understorey. Tropical rainforests exhibited a similar behaviour.

The volume and complexity of their vascular systems make the dynamics of long-distance water transport in large trees difficult to study. We used heat and deuterated water (D2)) as tracers to characterize whole-tree water transport and storage properties in individual trees belonging to the coniferous species Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco and Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg. The trees used in this study spanned a broad range of height (13.5-58 m) and diameter (0.14-1.43 m). Sap flow was monitored continuously with heat dissipation probes near the base of the trunk prior to, during and following injection of D2O. The transit time for D2O transport from the base of the trunk to the upper crown and the tracer residence time were determined by measuring hydrogen isotope ratios in water extracted from leaves sampled at regular intervals. Transit times for arrival of D2O in the upper crown ranged from 2.5 to 21 d and residence times ranged from 36 to 79 d. Estimates of maximum sap velocity derived from tracer transit times and path length ranged from 2.4 to 5.4 m d(-1). Tracer residence time and half-life increased as tree diameter increased, independent of species. Species-independent scaling of tracer velocity with sapwood-specific conductivity was also observed. When data from this study were combined with similar data from an earlier study of four tropical angiosperm trees, species-independent scaling of tracer velocity and residence time with sapwood hydraulic capacitance was observed. Sapwood capacitance is an intrinsic tissue-level property that appears to govern whole-tree water transport in a similar manner among both tracheid- and vessel-bearing species.

Aims Natural and anthropogenic changes in forests can have important influences on transpiration and water production. Understanding the effects of increasing disturbances, due for example to climate change and forest harvesting, requires detailed information on how forest density and structural attributes relate to transpiration. Mean annual transpiration of eucalypt forest communities is often strongly correlated with total cross-sectional sapwood area. Our aim was to test an efficient method for estimating sapwood area at 1.3 m height (SA 1.3) in a large number of trees to understand the spatial heterogeneity of tree and stand sapwood area within and between forest communities, and develop allometric relationships that predict SA 1.3 with forest inventory data. We also apply tree competition models to determine the degree to which the relationship between SA 1.3 and tree basal area at 1.3 m height (BA 1.3) is influenced by competition. Methods We visited 25 recently harvested southeastern Australian forest sites consisting of 1379 trees and 5 Eucalyptus species to evaluate a new efficient data collection method for estimating SA 1.3 with tree taper and stump dimensions data using mixed effects models. The locations of 784 stumps within one 5-ha site were accurately mapped using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and four distance-dependent tree competition models were applied across the site to explain within-stand variation in the ratio of SA 1.3 to BA 1.3. Data from 24 additional sites, consisting of ten 15 m radial plots per site, were used to analyse within-site variation in R Ha (the ratio of stand sapwood area SA Ha to stand basal area BA Ha). The radial plots were merged within each site to evaluate between-site variations in R Ha across the landscape. For predicting SA Ha with forest inventory data, we computed the relationship between SA Ha and a new index of total stem perimeter per hectare, defined as ? B A H a N T, where N T is tree stocking density.Important findings Our 1379 measured stems represent the most comprehensive measure of sapwood area, surpassing the 757 measured stems in native eucalypt forests published in literature. The species-specific R Ha varied considerably across sites and therefore extrapolating SA Ha with spatially distributed BA Ha maps and a generalized R Ha would introduce local uncertainty. We found that the species-specific stem perimeter index was more effective at capturing variability in SA Ha across the landscape using forest composition, structure and density data (R 2 : 0.72–0.77). The strong correlation between tree SA 1.3 and BA 1.3 improved slightly using tree competition models (R 2 increased from 0.86 to 0.88). Relating SA Ha to routinely measured forest inventory attributes within permanent plots and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data may provide opportunities to map forest water use in time and space across large areas disturbed by wildfire and logging.
