Summary Flooding responses in Sporobolus virginicus (L.) Kunth., a perennial C4 grass, propagated from plants collected on the fringes of a mangrove swamp, were examined in a glasshouse study over 42 days. Flooding significantly reduced soil redox potential, induced adventitious root development, shifted resource allocation from below- to above-ground components without affecting total biomass accumulation and significantly decreased below-ground/above-ground biomass ratios. Although soil waterlogging significantly increased alcohol dehydrogenase activity (ADH) after 30 h, significant increase in central air space by 45–50% of the cross-sectional stem area eliminated root hypoxia, and ADH activity decreased to levels equivalent to drained controls after 42 days. In addition, flooded plants exhibited significantly higher carbon dioxide assimilation rates but similar relative growth rates (RGR) to drained controls. The results indicate that S. virginicus responds to water-logging by a combination of metabolic, morphological and anatomical mechanisms, which may account for its widespread distribution in coastal lagoons, estuaries and marshes.  相似文献

The effects of nitrogen form and phosphorus source on the growth, nutrient uptake and rhizosphere soil property of tea (Camellia sinensis L.) were investigated in a pot experiment. The experiment was performed with a compartmental cropping device, which enables the collection of rhizosphere soil at defined distances from the root of tea plant. Nitrogen was supplied as nitrate or ammonium in combination with soluble phosphorus as Ca(H2PO4)2 or insoluble P as rock phosphate. The leaf dry matter production of tea was significantly greater in the treatments with NH4 + than NO3 -, whereas dry matter production of root and stem was not significantly affected. Addition of phosphorus as either source did not influence the dry matter production. The concentrations of K in root, Mg and Ca in both the shoot and root supplied with NO3 - were significantly higher than in NH4 + and influence of P sources was minor. On the contrary, Al and Mn concentrations were significantly larger in NH4 --fed plants which could be attributed to remarkably increased availability of Al and Mn caused by acidification of the rhizosphere soil (the first 1-mm soil section from the root surface) with NH4–N nutrition. The concentration of N in shoot was also significantly higher in NH4- than in NO3-fed plants, indicating higher use efficiency of NH4–N. Whatever the phosphate source, rhizosphere pH declined in ammonium compared to in nitrate treatment. The pH decrease was much larger when no P or soluble P were applied and reached 0.85–1.30 units which extended to 3–5 mm away from the root surface. Exchangeable acidity, content of exchangeable Al and Mn were also considerably higher in the rhizosphere soils of NH4 + fed tea plants. Significant amounts of P dissolved from rock phosphate accumulated in rhizosphere of NH4 +, not NO3 -, suggesting that the dissolution of rock phosphate was induced by the proton excreted by tea root fed with ammonium. With soluble P addition, shoot and root P concentrations were greater in NH4 + than in NO3 - treatment and it appeared that this difference could not be sufficiently explained by the available P content in soil which was only slightly higher in NH4 + treatment. With rock phosphate addition, the shoot and root P concentrations were hardly affected by nitrogen form, although the available P content was much higher and accumulated in the rhizosphere soil supplied with ammonium. The reason for this was discussed with regard to the inter-relationship of Al with P uptake. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We examine the effect of mulches on the soil volumetric water content (SVWC), pH, carbon (C), total and mineral (NH4 and NO3) nitrogen (N), total and bicarbonate phosphorus (P), and on the survival and relative growth rate of three species, Ipomea wolcottiana Rose, Lonchocarpus eriocarinalis Micheli and Caesalpinia eriostachys Benth, in a degraded seasonally dry tropical forest (SDTF) area. Our study year was unusually dry, with only half of the mean annual rainfall. Sixteen plots (5 × 6 m) for each of our four treatments, mulches with alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) straw, forest litter (SDTF litter), polyethylene and bare soil (control), were used. In each plot, 20 tree saplings were planted of each species. The SVWC was higher in plots mulched with polyethylene than in bare soil plots. The soil pH did not change with mulching, and there were no differences between treatments in the concentrations of soil organic C, total N, NO3 and total P. However, soil concentrations of NH4 were highest in plots with alfalfa straw and of bicarbonate P in plots with polyethylene. Sapling survival was higher in polyethylene mulch plots than in other mulching treatments, in the order I.␣wolcottiana > C. eriostachys > L. eriocarinalis. Sapling survival under organic mulches, alfalfa straw and forest litter were similar, and lowest in bare soil. The relative growth rate followed the order L. eriocarinalis < C. eriostachys < I. wolcotiana, and the growth rate of all species was greatest under polyethylene mulch. We conclude that a combination of polyethylene mulch with species of high growth rate is best for restoring seasonally dry tropical areas.  相似文献

Effects of acidic soil factors (Al, H-ion, Mo, and Mn) upon the soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Essex)/Bradyrhizobium japonicum symbiosis were examined in acidified soil. Plants were grown under full sunlight in pots containing N-deficient soil (pH 6.7) or similar soil amended with sufficient Al2(SO4)3 or elemental S to give soil pH values of 4.8 and 4.6, respectively, and water-extractable Al levels of 30 and 14 M, respectively. Other treatments consisted of the addition of inorganic N or inoculation with commercial or locally-isolated B. japonicum. Acidification did not reduce shoot or root weights of plants receiving inorganic N but reduced (P0.05) shoot and root dry weights, nodule dry weights and numbers, shoot N concentrations, and chlorophyll levels of inoculated plants. Shoot dry weights and nodulation of inoculated plants were greater (P0.05) in Al2(SO4)3-amended soil than in S-amended soil. Addition of Mo was not beneficial. It was concluded that reduced plant growth was caused by the effects of acidified soil on nodulation and that H-ion toxicity was probably the most limiting factor. Effects of Al, Mn, or Mo appeared less likely.  相似文献

During a seven-month period the effect of different nitrogen (N) availability in soil on growth and nutrient uptake was studied in three-year-old Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) trees. The plants were grown in pots on N-poor forest soil supplied with various amounts and forms (inorganic and organic) of N. Increasing supply of inorganic N (as NH4NO3) increased the formation of new shoots and shoot dry weight. The root/shoot dry weight ratio of new growth was drastically decreased from 1.6 in plants without N supply to 0.5 in plants supplied with high levels of NH4NO3. This decrease in root/shoot dry weight ratio was associated with distinct changes in root morphology in favour of shorter and thicker roots. The addition of keratin as organic N source did neither affect growth nor root morphology of the trees. The amount of N taken up by plants was closely related to the supply of inorganic N, and trees supplied with highest levels of NH4NO3 also had the highest N contents in the dry matter of needles and roots. In contrast, N contents in needles of trees grown without additional N, or with keratin supply, were in the deficiency range. Supply of NH4NO3 decreased the contents of phosphate (P) and potassium (K) and therefore markedly increased N/P and N/K ratios in the needles. On the other hand, the contents of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and manganese (Mn) in the needles were increased in the plants supplied with inorganic N, suggesting high soil availability and promotion of uptake of these divalent cations by high nitrate uptake. The observed effects on root/shoot dry weight ratio, root morphology, and mineral nutrient composition of the needles indicated that high inorganic N supply may increase above-ground productivity but at the same time decrease the tolerance of trees against soil-borne (e.g. deficiency of other mineral nutrients) stress factors. Plant samples collected from 17 populations of 9 taxa of the generaDianthus, Minuartia, Scleranthus, andSilene (Caryophyllaceae), growing in 14 metalliferous sites of N Greece, and surface soil samples from their growth area were analysed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Ni, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ca, Mg. Metal uptake varies considerably between the populations. A resistance mechanism excluding Cu and Pb from the aerial parts of the plants over a wide range of the soil concentrations up to a critical soil level appeared to exist, whereas Zn concentrations in plants were analogously related to those of the soil.Scleranthus perennis subsp.perennis showed the highest Cu concentration (205 µg/g), whereasMinuartia cf.bulgarica hyperaccumulated Pb (1175 µg/g). Ca concentrations in plants were in most cases much higher than those in soil, whereas the contrary was true for Mg. As a result the Ca/Mg ratio, which was in almost all cases lower than 1 in the soil, was much increased in the plants.  相似文献

This study reports dynamic changes in the beech forest vegetation during one decade, using 95 permanent observation areas representing a wide variety of soils and management regimes. Current soil acidification, including decreasing pH and base cation pools, increasing solubility of toxic elements and increasing deposition of N, as well as recent changes in the beech forest management have created good conditions for the study. Most species of vascular plants increased their frequencies during the 1980's. However, there were several notable exceptions, in particularGalium odoratum, Viola riviniana/reichenbachiana, Polygonatum multiflorum, andMercurialis perennis. These species, demanding a comparatively low soil acidity for survival, are distinctly disfavoured by the long-term soil changes in the forests, which seem to have approached or exceeded their limits of existence in many sites. With most other species, differences in management regimes between the beginning and the end of the observation period were more important to the frequency changes. Sensitive to heavy thinning of the stands were, e.g.Oxalis acetosella, Lamium galeobdolon andMelica uniflora, favoured by thinning wereStellaria nemorum, Carex pilulifera, Milium effusum and an appreciable number of more ephemeral species normally occurring in clear-cut areas or otherwise open land, e.g.,Rubus idaeus, Galeopsis tetrahit, Athyrium filix-femina, Juncus effusus, Agrostic capillaris, Veronica officinalis, Urtica dioica, andMoehringia trinervia. Saplings of woody plants usually also became more frequent during the 1980's.  相似文献

In order to investigate if Al resistance in Norway spruce (Picea abies[L.] Karst.) can be attributed to similar exclusion mechanisms as they occur in several crop plants, three-year-old Norway spruce plants were treated for one week in hydroculture with either 500 μM AlCl3 or CaCl2 solutions at pH 4. Sequential root extraction with 1 M NH4Cl and 0.01 M HCl and EDX microanalysis revealed that Al and Ca in cell walls and on the surface participated in exchange processes. About half of the Al extracted by the sequential extraction was not exchangeable by 1 M NH4Cl. Phenolics and phosphate present in the root extracts are possible ligands for Al adsorbed to or precipitated at the root in a non-exchangeable form. In both treatments, C release during the first period of 2 d was much higher than during the remaining time of the experiment. Al treated plants released less total C, carbohydrates and phenolics than did Ca treated plants. Acetate was the only organic acid anion that could be detected in some samples of both treatments. Free amino acids were present at micromolar concentrations but as hydrolysis did not increase their yield, there was no evidence of peptide release. One to two thirds of the released C were large enough not to pass a 1 kDa ultrafilter. The results suggest that exudation of soluble organic complexors is not a major Al tolerance mechanism in Norway spruce, although complexation of Al by phenolic substances released by the root could be detected by fluorescence spectroscopy. Aluminium tolerance could rather be attributed to immobilization in the root apoplast, where strong binding sites are available or precipitation may occur. Positive effects of legumes and actinorhizal plants on N-poor soils have been observed in many studies but few have been done at high latitudes, which was the location of our study. We measured N2 fixation and several indices of soil N at a site near the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden. More than 20 years ago lupine (Lupinus nootkatensis Donn) and gray alder (Alnus incana L. Moench) were planted on this degraded forest site. We measured total soil N, net N mineralization and nitrification with a buried bag technique, and fluxes of NH+ 4 and NO 3 as collected on ion exchange membranes. We also estimated N2 fixation activity of the N2-fixing plants by the natural abundance of 15N of leaves with Betula pendula Roth. as reference species. Foliar nitrogen in the N2-fixing plants was almost totally derived from N2 fixation. Plots containing N2-fixing species generally had significantly higher soil N and N availability than a control plot without N2-fixing plants. Taken together, all measurements indicated that N2-fixing plants can be used to effectively improve soil fertility at high latitudes in northern Sweden.  相似文献

Summary To determine the possible changes in soil characteristics and plant growth resulting from SO2-exposure, field grownVicia faba plants were exposed to 0.5 ppm SO2 for 4 h daily from 40 to 100 days of their ages. The major effects of SO2 on soil system includes increases in contents of total sulphur, organic carbon and exchangeable Al; lowering of pH and decreases in contents of N, P and exchangeable K and Ca. Besides, SO2 interfered with nutrient uptake and plant growth leading to reductions in lengths of root and shoot, numbers of leaves, nodules and pods, phytomass accumulation and net primary productivity.  相似文献

Soil born fungi such as Phytium ultimum, Fusarium ssp., and Rhizoctonia solani (Kühn) severely restrict stand establishment of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) on acid soils of the Tropics. Calcium application is known to alleviate fungal infection in many legumes but the causes are still unclear. To investigate environmental factors and physiological mechanisms involved, growth chamber experiments were conducted with an acid sandy soil from Mexico. Treatments were soil liming at a rate of 0.67 g Ca(OH)2 kg-1, gypsum application at 0.49 g CaSO4 2H2O kg-1 soil placed around the seed, and an untreated control. Beans were grown under three temperature regimes with constant night and one constant day vs. two sinusoidal day temperatures. To examine patterns of seed and seedling exudation at regular intervals leachates of germinating seeds were collected on filter paper soaked with equilibrium solutions from soils of the three treatments. The severity of root rot in the control treatment was highest when plants were stressed by temperature extremes. At a sinusoidal day temperature peaking at 40°C soil liming and gypsum application to the seed increased the number of healthy seedlings similarly by over 60%. However, only liming which effectively eliminated growth constraints by low pH and high aluminum concentrations led to an increase in hypocotyl elongation by 22% and in total root length by 8%. Both calcium amendments increased the calcium and potassium contents in the hypocotyl tissue. From seeds exposed to the equilibrium solution of unlimed soil with pH 3.7, 1 mM Ca, and 0.6 mM Al considerable amounts of amino acids and carbohydrates were leached. In contrast, exposure to the equilibrium solution from limed soil with pH 4.3, 3 mM Ca, and negligible concentrations of Al led to a net uptake of amino acids and decreased leaching of carbohydrates. Exposure to the equilibrium solution of the gypsum treatment with pH 3.6, 20 mM Ca, and 1.2 mM Al resulted in a somewhat smaller net uptake of amino acids compared to liming. During germination pH around the seeds steeply increased in the untreated control but significantly less with both amendments. The results indicate that pH and the Ca/Al ratio in the soil solution around bean seeds determine their pattern of exudation and solute uptake. For bean germination and early growth on acid soils locally placed application of small amounts of gypsum as seed pelleting seems as effective as soil liming in reducing the incidence of root rot. The results indicate that this may be accomplished by decreasing the amount of leachates available for fungal development.  相似文献

One of the characteristics of highly invaded ecosystems is that exotic species are often poor invaders of edaphically severe sites, which become refuges for native flora. To investigate the invasive potential of Lolium multiflorum (Per.) into alkali sites in California, an ex-situ reciprocal transfer experiment was carried out using seeds from populations of L. multiflorum taken from three sites differing in alkalinity (and inundation), including alkali sink soils (pH 8.5) and sink matrix soils (pH 7.4) located within meters of each other, and non-sink soils (pH 5.0) located several km away. Survivorship, plant height, leaf number and seed production were assessed. In addition, a native composite, Hemizonia pungens (Hick.), commonly found on alkali sinks was also sampled at the sink and sink matrix microsites. Lolium multiflorum plants grown from alkali sink and sink matrix seeds produced fewer leaves and seeds but were taller than plants grown from non-alkali seeds, the latter perhaps an adaptation to frequently inundated soils. Non-alkali genotypes fared poorly in sink soils for all traits, both in comparison to their growth on non-sink soils, and in comparison to the sink and sink edge genotypes. This suggests the existence of L. multiflorum ecotypes adapted to inundated alkali sinks, a genotypic difference that occurs on a broad spatial scale (kilometers), but not so obviously on the micro-site scale (meters) between sink and sink matrix populations. These data suggest that the absence of exotic invasives from alkali sites may be temporary if they are evolving tolerance for these severe sites, and this may threaten the future of the native alkali specialists that currently find refuge in these sites.  相似文献

Although Al toxicity is believed to be a problem in acid sulfate soils cropped to rice (Oryza, sativa L.), little is known about the behavior of other trace metals such as B and Mo in these soils. The objectives of this study were to measure the availability of Al, B, and Mo in these soils, to determine what governs the availability of these metals and to investigate the relationships between metal availability and uptake by rice. Metal availability and uptake by rice were evaluated in 134 flooded acid sulfate soils in the Central Plains region of Thailand and in a growth chamber study using 50 of the same soils. Soil and plant metal analyses were conducted at the panicle differentiation stage of growth in both studies and in the soil prior to transplanting in the growth chamber study. Metal activities were determined with GEOCHEM. The mineral phases believed to be governing Al3+ activities were jurbanite under low pH conditions and amorphous Al(OH)3 at high pH. The Al chemistry is believed to be intimately linked to the redox-pH cycle, which is driven by the monsoonal climate. Mortality of rice associated with Al toxicity was observed under field and growth chamber conditions. Interference in P uptake and/or assimilation was believed to be the mechanism of Al toxicity. Activities of B(OH) 4 and B(OH) 3 0 were found to be highly correlated to pH and ionic strength, respectively, with the latter being the dominant B ion found in these soils. Activities of MoO 4 2– were positively correlated to pH and appeared to be controlled by wulfenite. Leaf Mo contents were found to be positively correlated with MoO 4 2– activity.  相似文献

The effect of incorporating cattle slurry in soil, either by mixing or by simulated injection into a hollow in soil, on the ryegrass uptake of total N and 15NH4 +-N was determined in three soils of different texture. The N accumulation in Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) from slurry N and from an equivalent amount of NH4 +-N in (15NH4) SO4 (control) was measured during 6 months of growth in pots. After this period the total recovery of labelled N in the top soil plus herbage was similar in the slurry and the control treatments. This indicated that gaseous losses from slurry NH4 +-N were insignificant. Consequently, the availability of slurry N to plants was mainly influenced by the mineralization-immobilization processes. The apparent utilization of slurry NH4 +-N mixed into soil was 7%, 14% and 24% lower than the utilization of (NH4)2SO4-N in a sand soil, a sandy loam soil and a loam soil, respectively. Thus, the net immobilization of N due to slurry application increased with increasing soil clay content, whereas the recovery in plants of 15N-labelled NH4 +-N from slurry was similar on the three soils. A parallel incubation experiment showed that the immobilization of slurry N occurred within the first week after slurry application. The incorporation of slurry N by simulated injection increased the plant uptake of both total and labelled N compared to mixing the slurry into the soil. The apparent utilization of injected slurry NH4 +-N was 7% higher, 8% lower and 4% higher than the utilization of (NH4)2SO4-N in the sand, the sandy loam and the loam soil, respectively. It is concluded that the spatial distribution of slurry in soil influenced the net mineralization of N to the same degree as did the soil type.  相似文献

Four cultivars of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam. cvs. Gulf, Marshall, Urbana, and Wilo) were grown in nutrient solution (pH 4.2) at two Al levels (0 and 74 μM). Cations were desorbed from the Donnan free space of roots of 15-, 23-, and 35-day-old plants using BaCl2, BaCl2-triethanolamine, NH4OAc, and KCl. The amounts of desorbed Ca2+ and K+ decreased, while desorption of Mn2+ and Na+ increased with plant age. Differences between 15- and 35-day-old plants, but not between 15- and 23-day-old, were significant. Aluminum considerably decreased the amount of desorbed divalent cations (Ca2+, Mg2+) and increased the amount of desorbed K+ and Na+. Ability to resist these changes appeared to be one of the mechanisms determining Al tolerance of ryegrass cultivars.  相似文献

Black root rot of tobacco, caused by Thielaviopsis basicola, is generally severe at soil pH values >5.6 and suppressed under more acidic conditions (pH < 5.2). Soil acidifying fertilizers containing NH4–N are generally recommended for burley tobacco production in North Carolina, but the effects of N form and application rate on development of black root rot and on the population dynamics of T. basicola have not been determined. Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of N form (NH4 + or NO3 ) and rate on pathogen and disease parameters at several initial soil pH levels. A moderately-conducive field soil, initial pH 4.7, was adjusted to a pH of 5.5 or 6.5 by the addition of CaOH2, then amended with the desired nitrogen form and rate. Pathogen populations were determined over time. In addition, spore production in extracts of roots from plants grown in the various nitrogen and pH treatments was determined. Finally, because tobacco responds to acidic soil conditions and exposure to NH4–N by accumulating high concentrations of the polyamine putrescine, the toxicity of putrescine on vegetative growth and reproduction of T. basicola was investigated. Low soil pH and high levels of NH4–N suppressed reproduction of T. basicola in soil and in root extract, while use of NO3–N and depletion of NH4–N resulted in rapid increases in populations of T. basicola. At 20 mM, putrescine inhibited hyphal growth by 60% and aleuriospore production by 98%. Fertilizers that reduced soil pH also reduced reproduction by T. basicola, and thus have potential for management of black root rot by suppressing populations of T. basicola over multiple years of crop production. The suppression of T. basicola and black root rot observed with NH4–N amendments may partially be due to development of an inhibitory environment in the root and not solely to changes in rhizosphere pH.  相似文献

During vegetative regrowth of Medicago sativa L., soil N, symbiotically fixed N2 and N reserves meet the nitrogen requirements for shoot regrowth. Experiments with nodulated or non-nodulated plants were carried out to investigate the changes in N flows originating from the different N sources and in xylem transport of amino acids during regrowth. Exogenous N uptake, N2 fixation and endogenous N remobilization were estimated by 15N labelling and amino acids in xylem sap were analysed. Removal of shoots resulted in great declines of exogenous N flows derived either from N2 or from NH4NO3 during the first week of regrowth, thereafter recovery increased linearly. Mineral N uptake as well as N2 fixation occurred mainly between the 10th and 18th day after removal of shoots while exogenous N assimilation in intact plants remained at a steady level. Nitrogen remobilization rates in defoliated plants increased by at least three to five-fold, especially during the first 10 days following shoot removal. Compared to control plants, contents of amino acids in xylem sap, during the first 10 days of regrowth, were reduced by about 72% and 82% in NH4NO3 grown and in N2 fixing plants, respectively. Asparagine was the main amino acid transported in xylem sap of both treated plants. Its relative contents during this period significantly decreased from 75% to 59% and from 67% to 36% respectively in non-nodulated plants and in nodulated ones. This decline was accompanied by compensatory increase in the relative contents of aspartate and glutamine.  相似文献

Summary A set of species-specific repetitive DNA sequences was isolated from Lolium multiflorum and Festuca arundinacea. The degree of their species specificity as well as possible homologies among them were determined by dot-blot hybridization analysis. In order to understand the genomic organization of representative Lolium and Festuca-specific repetitive DNA sequences, we performed Southern blot hybridization and in situ hybridization to metaphase chromosomes.Southern blot hybridization analysis of eight different repetitive DNA sequences of L. multiflorum and one of F. arundinacea indicated either tandem and clustered arrangements of partially dispersed localization in their respective genomes. Some of these sequences, e.g. LMB3, showed a similar genomic organization in F. arundinacea and F. pratensis, but a slightly different organization and degree of redundancy in L. multiflorum. Clones sequences varied in size between 100 bp and 1.2 kb. Estimated copy number in the corresponding haploid genomes varied between 300 and 2×104. Sequence analysis of the highly species-specific sequences from plasmids pLMH2 and pLMB4 (L. multiflorum specific) and from pFAH1 (F. arundinacea specific) revealed some internal repeats without higher order. No homologies between the sequences or to other repetitive sequences were observed. In situ hybridization with these latter sequences to metaphase chromosomes from L. multiflorum, F. arundinacea and from symmetric sexual Festulolium hybrid revealed their relatively even distribution in the corresponding genomes. The in situ hybridization thus also allowed a clearcut simple identification of parental chromosomes in the Festulolium hybrid. The potential use of these species-specific clones as hybridization probes in quantitative dot-blot analysis of the genomic make-up of Festulolium (sexual and somatic) hybrids is also demonstrated.Abbreviations bp Base pair (s) - CMA chromomycin A3 - DAPI 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole - IPTG isopropyl -D-thio-galactopyranoside - kb kilobase pair(s) - NBT nitroblue tetrazolium chloride - X-gal 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-inonyl -D-galactopyranoside  相似文献

Summary Information is limited on soil contamination of leaves from field-grown row crops, especially with respect to aluminum (Al) analyses. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of washing leaf samples with either deionized water or detergent solution on elemental analyses for several agronomic crop plants. The crop plants sampled were corn (Zea mays L.), soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.), grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The crops were grown on a range of soil types, soil pH values, and tillage practices. Samples of upper leaves and lower leaves were collected separately. The samples were either not washed, washed with deionized water, or washed with detergent solution. After drying, grinding, and digesting, the samples were analyzed for Al, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu). For all crop plants and conditions studied, there was no effect on measured N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Zn, or Cu concentrations, but measured Al and Fe concentrations were influenced by washing. In general, washing had a greater effect on Al analyses than on Fe analyses. Soybean samples were most affected by washing, while wheat samples seemed to be least affected. The results reflected greater contamination of lower leaves than upper leaves. Decontamination procedures appear necessary prior to Al and Fe analyses of field-grown crop plants.  相似文献

The present study was performed at a heavy-traffic affected soil to examine the efficacy of bioaccumulation and translocation potentials of heavy metals by the naturally growing weed Plantago major. Heavy metals were analyzed in soil as well as in plant below- and above-ground parts along different distances from a heavy-traffic highway. All the investigated soil heavy metals, except Cd, varied significantly, while pH and E.C had no significant difference, with increasing distance from the highway. Likewise, there was a significant decrease of heavy metals in plant below- and aboveground parts. In addition, no significant difference between most soil and root heavy metals at 20 and 100 m as well as those at 500 and 750 m distance from the highway. The bioaccumulation factor (BF) of all heavy metals, except Cd and Sr, were less than unity at most distances. However, Cd showed relative BF decline with the distance in contrast to Sr, which increases as distance from the highway increases. On the other hand, the translocation factors (TF) of Cd, Co, Cu, Pb and Zn were higher at the distances far from the highway, while that of Fe, Cr and Sr were higher near the highway. Furthermore, the enrichment factor (EF) showed small variations, among the investigated heavy metals, with varying distances from the pollution source. It was found that soil Fe, Al, Cr, Ni, Sr, V and Zn had significant positive correlation with all investigated heavy metals in P. major roots. The higher TFs of Cd, Fe and Pb in P. major shoots makes it suitable for phytoextraction from soil, while the lower ratios of Al, Mn, V, Co, Ni, Cr, Zn, Cu and Sr make it suitable for their phytostabilization. Therefore, this plant can be used as a bioindicator and biomonitor for traffic related heavy metals.  相似文献
