本文研究了纵坑切梢小蠹Tomiaus piniperda对云南松枝梢的危害,并对该虫在蛀梢期的有关生物学特性,如性比、交配、食物选择、卵巢发育、越冬等进行了探讨。在昆明地区,蛀梢期从当年5月持续到次年3月。在此期间,该虫平均可蛀害3-6个枝梢。受害梢以当年生枝梢为主,平均直径为7-8.5mm。同一枝梢可受到多次蛀害。侵入孔距枝梢末端约3~4cm。该虫在蛀梢期已开始交配活动。交配率随卵巢发育进度而增大。各虫态受冬季气温低的影响发育减缓,但均能顺利越冬。  相似文献

Experiments on the technique of insect transmission of the cacao virus 1A (swollen-shoot) are described. This virus is unique in being transmitted by mealybugs (Coccoidea) and the experiments show that all stages of Pseudococcus njalensis Laing and of Ferrisia virgata Ckll. are vectors. These insects become infective after feeding for less than 4 hr. on the infected plant and transmit after less than 3 hr. on the test plant. The virus is non-persistent in the vector after 3 hr. test-feeding. The vectors can collect virus from either leaf, green shoot, bark or pod; the young symptom-bearing leaf is the best site for infection-feeding and the cotyledon of the bean for test-feeding.  相似文献

Observations in the held suggest that moss shoots are seldom freely consumed by either vertebrate or invertebrate herbivores, but damage to immature capsules by slugs is abundant. Palatability of the mosses Mnium hornum, Brachythecium rutabulum and Funaria hygrometrica to the generalist herbivores, Arion subfuscus and A. rufus was investigated by offering the slugs four stages in the moss life cycle; protonema, leafy shoot, immature capsule and mature capsule. The slugs showed a preference for immature capsules and protonemata in all moss species tested. Consumption of shoots of M. hornum and B. rutabulum was negligible even after seven days starvation, but some shoots of F. hygrometrica were eaten in every overnight trial performed. Shoot extracts on starch-wafer substrate appeared to be more acceptable than intact shoots suggesting that the cell wall provides the barrier to free consumption. The form and location of a possible feeding deterrent is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract: The pine shoot beetle, Tomicus piniperda, is causing substantial tree mortality to Pinus yunnanensis in south‐western China, whereas the same species in Europe seldom kills Pinus sylvestris. In order to understand this difference in aggressiveness, we studied the shoot feeding ecology of the pine shoot beetles in Yunnan, and compared it with European results. We found many similarities in the shoot feeding behaviour of T. piniperda, and also that of Tomicus minor, which was common locally. In contrast to Europe, however, the pine shoot beetles in Yunnan seem to be able to predispose the host trees for stem attack by intensive shoot‐feeding. It has also been observed that beetles aggregate in certain trees during shoot feeding, but we could not verify that in our experiment.  相似文献

Abstract 1. There was a positive correlation between oviposition and feeding preferences and offspring performance in the spittlebug Aphrophora pectoralis Matsumura (Homoptera: Cercopoidea, Aphrophoridae) on four species of willow Salix sp. (Salicaceae) growing near Sapporo, Japan. Spittlebugs preferred rapidly growing shoots where performance was highest.
2. When the effects of shoot length were removed, egg densities on willow species were associated with offspring performance on three of four species. Egg densities and survival rates were low on Salix integra and Salix miyabeana . Survival rates were high on Salix sachalinensis , which had high egg densities, and Salix hultenii , which had low egg densities.
3. Aphrophora pectoralis formed mating aggregations almost exclusively on S. sachalinensis but then dispersed to other willow species to oviposit.
4. Nymphs dispersed from the oviposition site to feed on nearby shoots within the same plant but they did not disperse to other willow plants. Nymphs had the same preference for rapidly growing shoots as ovipositing females, so they were able to refine the maternal choice by moving to larger shoots near the shoot on which they had eclosed.
5. The spittlebugs were highly aggregated at all life stages so that even at high densities only a small proportion of the most vigorously growing shoots was utilised.  相似文献

Large‐scale losses of seagrass areas have been associated with eutrophication events, which have led to an overproduction of photosynthetic organisms including epiphytes. Grazers that feed on epiphytes can exert a significant top–down control in the system, but the effects of physical factors on grazing activity and feeding behaviour have been rarely examined. We addressed the combination of hydrodynamic regime and seagrass shoot density can alter the feeding and foraging behaviours of mesograzers. A full factorial experiment, with flow velocity (high, medium and low) and shoot density (high versus low) as main factors, was conducted in a racetrack flume using artificial seagrass plots. The results showed that when high flow velocity conditions were combined with low shoot density, consumption of epiphytes by mesograzers was strongly reduced. In contrast, when flow velocity was low or shoot density was high, mesograzers exhibited high feeding rates and vigorous swimming behaviour. These results clearly indicate that hydrodynamic stress reduces the time that mesograzers can spend feeding, since it inhibits their swimming behaviour, and thus indirectly affecting to the density of epiphytes. Therefore, the triggering of trophic cascade effects in seagrass communities under these experimental conditions depended on the interrelationship and feedbacks among shoot density, abiotic (flow velocity) and biotic (epiphytes and mesograzers) compartments, with flow velocity exerting a top–down control on seagrass ecosystems.  相似文献

During 1991, 1992, &, 1993 a study on shoot feeding, overwintering and the presence of Tomicus minor inside pine shoots was carried out in the province of León (NW Spain). This paper deals with the duration of these processes, overwintering sites and pine shoot feeding characteristics: age, diameter, length, occurrence of exit holes, multiple attacks and length of the burrowed tunnels. Metal hyperaccumulation has been proposed as a plant defensive strategy. Here, we investigated whether cadmium (Cd) hyperaccumulation protected Thlaspi caerulescens from leaf feeding damage by thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis). Two ecotypes differing in Cd accumulation, Ganges (high) and Prayon (low), were grown in compost amended with 0-1000 mg Cd kg(-1) in two experiments under glasshouse conditions. F2 and F3 plants from the Prayon x Ganges crosses were grown with 5 mg Cd kg(-1). Plants were naturally colonized by thrips and the leaf feeding damage index (LFDI) was assessed. The LFDI decreased significantly with increasing Cd in both ecotypes, and correlated with shoot Cd concentration in a log-linear fashion. Prayon was more attractive to thrips than Ganges, but the ecotypic difference in the LFDI was largely accounted for by the shoot Cd concentration. In the F2 and F3 plants, the LFDI correlated significantly and negatively with shoot Cd, but not with shoot zinc (Zn) or sulphur (S) concentrations. We conclude that Cd hyperaccumulation deters thrips from feeding on T. caerulescens leaves, which may offer an adaptive benefit to the plant.  相似文献

Lateralized feeding behaviors of 7 wild-born and 6 captive-born Hapalemur griseus sp. were evaluated in two conditions, simple food reaching and species-typical bamboo foraging. Gentle lemurs were found to have the strongest lateral hand preference in simple food reaching of any prosimian species yet studied. However in this small sample, population-level lateralization was not found: 5 preferred the right hand and 8 the left. The movement pattern used by hapalemurs when feeding on bamboo leaf shoots was categorized into four components: PULL IN, COUNTERFORCE, TURN, and FEED IN. Lateral hand bias was scored for all four components and lateral mouth preference was scored for the two components that involved the mouth (COUNTERFORCE and FEED IN). Strong positive correlations were found between hand preference in the most lateralized components of shoot eating (TURN and FEED IN) and simple food reaching. This suggests that the gentle lemurs' species-typical bamboo feeding behavior may contribute to the exceptionally strong hand preference for simple food reaching seen in this species. There were negative correlations between the component measure of shoot feeding that required strength (COUNTERFORCE) and the components that required manipulation (TURN and FEED IN). Within the COUNTERFORCE and FEED IN components, mouth preference and hand preference were positively associated in a manner that suggested one side of the mouth was preferred for removing the shoot and the other side for mastication. Asymmetrical dental wear may provide a means of dating behavioral lateralization in ancestral species. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

According to optimal defence theory (ODT) plants should invest in stronger defence in the most valuable parts, such as reproductive or young tissue. Cotton plants are known to express high resistance to herbivore feeding in the developing leaves at the top of the plant after herbivore-damage. Cotton plants also have developing leaves on side shoots from the nodes all along the plant. This allowed us to investigate within-plant distribution of defence between younger tissues at different locations on the plant. We found that all developing leaves showed increased resistance to feeding by larvae of the generalist moth Spodoptera littoralis after herbivore damage to leaves of the plant. An increase in the concentration of secondary compounds, terpenoid aldehydes, was found in developing leaves both at the top of the plant and on the side shoots. However, the resistance was stronger in the top leaves than in the side shoot leaves, showing that there is intra-plant variation in the induced response between different leaves of the same age. After the initial damage, larval feeding mainly occurred on the older, fully developed true leaves. Furthermore, the herbivore-induced resistance in the developing leaves reduced upward movement of feeding larvae on the plant and reduced the feeding on the upper parts of the plant over a period of at least 6 days. The plant thus benefits from defending all developing leaves by directing feeding to older, less valuable leaves and lower parts of the plant. The observed distribution of defence within cotton plants supports ODT.  相似文献

The ontogeny of Epilobium hirsutum grown under natural summer photoperiod in a glasshouse was divided into vegetative, early transitional, transitional, and floral stages. Bijugate phyllotaxy, common to both the vegetative and early transitional stages, is transformed into spiral phyllotaxy during the transitional stage by an initial change in the divergence angle of a single primordium inserted at a unique level on the shoot. Leaf primordia subsequently are inserted in a spiral arrangement in the indeterminate floral shoot apex. The early transitional shoot apical meristem is about 1.5 times the volume of the vegetative meristem but expands at about two-thirds the relative plastochron rate of volume increment of the vegetative meristem. There are progressive decreases in the plastochron and relative plastochron rates of radial and vertical shoot growth through ontogeny. Relative chronological rates of shoot growth, however, are not altered during ontogeny. Spiral transformation results from changes in the relative points of insertion of leaf primordia on the shoot meristem. These changes are accompanied by an increased rate of primordia initiation on a more circular shoot meristem. The change in phyllotaxy during ontogeny is similar to that which was artificially induced by chemical modification of auxin concentration gradients in the shoot apex, with the additional feature that there is an initial increase in the volume of the shoot meristem prior to the natural spiral transformation. Size of the shoot apical meristem, however, appears to have little influence on Epilobium phyllotaxy; but the geometric shape of the meristem is well correlated with bijugate to spiral transformations. This suggests that geometric parameters of the shoot meristem should be considered in theoretical models of phyllotaxy.  相似文献

The formation of shoot and root meristems that ultimately give rise to all tissues of the plant body occurs for the first time during embryogenesis. Meristem formation has traditionally been defined in terms of the appearance of histological features of meristems; this approach has led to varying interpretations of the timing of meristem formation relative to other events in embryogenesis. Markers that would provide more objective criteria for the analysis of meristem formation have not been widely available. The maize homeobox gene, knotted1 (kn1), is expressed in shoot meristems throughout postembryonic stages of shoot development. In order to determine whether this gene is expressed in the shoot meristem from its earliest inception, we examined the expression of kn1 in embryos at a series of stages by in situ hybridization to kn1 mRNA and immunolocalization of KN1 protein. Our results show that the onset of kn1 expression is temporally and spatially coincident with the earliest histologically recognizable signs of shoot meristem formation in the embryo, and thus provides a valuable marker for this process. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

对塑料钵栽培的水稻进行罩宠试验,研究了褐飞虱和白背飞虱在不同若虫密度下取食为害对水稻营养生长的影响.结果表明,两种飞虱的成虫干重、水稻叶面积和其地上部干重因若虫密度的增加而下降.叶片干重占地上部干重的比例和稻株分配给叶片干物质量随为害程度的加重而增大;褐飞虱和白背飞虱总干重(X)与稻株地上部损失量(Y)之间存在着极显著的线性关系.两种飞虱干重每增加1mg,水稻地上部干重则分别损失26.01mg和21.90mg.讨论了稻飞虱取食为害对水稻致害的可能机制.  相似文献

1. Competitive and synergistic interactions directly or indirectly drive community dynamics of herbivorous insects. Novel interactions between non-native and native insects are unpredictable and not fully understood. 2. We used manipulative experiments on mature red spruce trees to test interactions between a non-native phloem feeding insect, the brown spruce longhorn beetle (BSLB), and an outbreaking native defoliator, the spruce budworm. We subjected treatment trees to defoliation by three densities of spruce budworm larvae. Treatment trees were: stressed by (i) girdling (to mimic beetle feeding) or (ii) girdling + BSLB before spruce budworm larvae were introduced on branches in sleeve cages. Budworm larvae then fed on foliage and developed to pupation. We assessed all branches for budworm performance, defoliation, shoot production and shoot growth. 3. Shoot length did not differ in response to stress from girdling or BSLB infestation. Neither stress from girdling, nor interactions with BSLB feeding affected spruce budworm performance or defoliation. Intraspecific impacts on performance and defoliation in relation to budworm density were stronger than the effects of tree stress. 4. Prior infestation of red spruce by BSLB in our experimental set-up did not influence spruce budworm performance. BSLB is a successful invader that has blended into its novel ecological niche because of ecological and phylogenetic similarities with a native congener, Tetropium cinnamopterum. 5. Outbreaks by BSLB will not likely impede or facilitate spruce budworm outbreaks if they co-occur. It would be useful to evaluate the reverse scenario of BSLB success after defoliation stress by spruce budworm.  相似文献

A leaf-folding sawfly in the genusPhyllocolpa (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae) attackingSalix miyabeana (Salicaceae) was studied near Sapporo, Hokkaido, along the Ishikari River in 1993. Host plant individuals were young trees 4–7 years old which were growing rapidly, producing some long shoots with large leaves. On a gradient of shoot length classes from 0–5 cm long to over 80 cm long, shoots were much more abundant in the shorter shoot length classes. However, attacks by ovipositing females increased as shoot length increase from 0 attacks on the shortest shoots to 5.17 attacks per shoot on the longest shoots. The frequency of attack per leaf increased from 0 to 0.13 over the same range of shoot lengths. This pattern of attack resulted in a high frequency of larval establishment in feeding sites, between 0.96 and 1.00, in all attacked shoot length categories. However, probability of survival to a late instar larva increased with shoot length and corresponded to the attack pattern, indicating a preference-performance linkage between female ovipositional decisions and larval survival. The patterns found for thisPhyllocolpa species are similar for galling sawflies in North America and Europe, especially in the genusEuura, members of which make stem, bud and leaf midrib galls. Extending the pattern to aPhyllocolpa species broadens identification of pattern and ultimately the generality of the emerging theory on populations of galling sawflies.  相似文献

Aphid-induced reduction of shoot and root growth in Douglas-fir seedlings   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
1. The short‐ and long‐term effects of photosynthate removal by sap‐sucking herbivores on plant growth were examined by experimentally manipulating densities of an aphid Cinara pseudotsugae (Wilson) on 2‐year‐old Douglas‐fir seedlings Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco under greenhouse conditions. An 18‐week test was conducted to determine short‐term effects. Effects of long‐term aphid feeding were examined by exposing seedlings to aphid feeding for two consecutive growing seasons. A third experiment evaluated the extent of recovery during 1 year following a single season of aphid feeding. At least 35 seedlings were used in each test. 2. Volume and dry weight of both shoots and roots decreased significantly with increasing aphid feeding in all three experiments. 3. The most significant and severe aphid effect was reduced root tissue density, suggesting carbohydrate depletion due to translocation from roots to shoots. 4. There was no sign of recovery, of either root or shoot growth, during the year following one season of feeding. 5. The results of this study indicate that short‐term feeding by aphids can affect plant growth and structure for a relatively long time.  相似文献

Field observations and experiments showed that the attractiveness of Boronia megastigma terminal shoots for Ctenarytaina thysanura (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) oviposition was effected by the quality and quantity of terminal shoots, relative hardness of the terminal shoot combined with a closed or open architecture of the shoot, nitrogenous fertilizer applications and intraspecific competition between psyllids. Heavy feeding either by nymphal or adult psyllids greatly reduces the attractiveness of terminal shoots for oviposition. This deterrence was associated with the production of honeydew resulting in the development of sooty moulds. When all nymphs had developed to adults, a further 21 days was required for the shoots to be restored to their original condition and suitability for oviposition.  相似文献
