Binding properties of the anti-HBA Ag antibody.

The properties of ideal HABb are defined on the basis of the results of box titrations of a random set of HBAg-positive sera with diluted human HBAb in microimmunodiffuse reaction. Ideal HBAb makes it possible to determine relative strength of antibody under test. Relative strength of antibody, together with antigenic determinants, is another criterion conditioning the determination of a HBAb standard.     

Cytokinins from the tRNA of the Red Alga Porphyra perforata J. Ag.

Isopentenyladenosine and cis-zeatin riboside have been identifiedby GC-MS from the tRNA of a red alga Porphyra perforata. (Received March 12, 1991; Accepted December 7, 1991)

In contact experiments with different experimental conditions, electrochemical Ag+ solutions exhibited better antimicrobial effectiveness against bacteria, a yeast species, and a mold than did analogous silver solutions from inorganic salts. The particular characteristics of electrochemical Ag+, such as the mode of action, effectiveness at low concentrations, and stability, indicate that Ag+ could be used effectively in preservatives.

Solution structural studies of the Ag(I)-DNA complex.

We report equilibrium dialysis and electric dichroism studies of the two strong complexes (I and II) of silver ion with DNA. Cooperative conversion of DNA to the stronger type I complex results in a 9% length decrease, and a structure in which intercalated ethidium is perpendicular to the helix axis. Upon addition of more Ag+ to form the type II complex, the DNA length reverts to its original value and bound ethidium once again becomes tilted from the plane perpendicular to the helix axis. In both type I and type II Ag (I) - DNA complexes, ethidium binding is mildly cooperative. We interpret the results in terms of a sequence of silver-induced cooperative switches of DNA from its B-form structure with propeller twisted base pairs to a structure with flat base pairs in the type I complex, and back again to propellered base pairs in the type II complex.     

喇叭藻(T.ornata J.Ag)多糖的分离及纯化

采用热水抽提法从喇叭藻中提取粗多糖,经胰蛋白酶和Ｓｅｖａｇｅ法脱蛋白,用ＣＴＡＢ将多糖分级淀粉,得到多糖的半纯品。再经Ｓｅｐｈａｄｅｘ Ｇ－２００凝胶柱层析进一步纯化,聚丙烯酰胺凝胶电泳进行纯度鉴定。     

Studies on the Development of the Reproductive Organs of Caloglossa leprieurii (Mont.) J. Ag.

The cell of Caloglossa leprieurli is a polycaryon. The sexual thalli are usually dioecious. Its life cycle involves the alternation of three generations. In the reproductive season, the appearance of tetrasporophyte and female and male gametophyte shows evident difference. The tetrasporophyte is big and flat. The branches are sparse. Many small red spots, i.e. tetrasporogial groups, can be seen with the naked eyes in the upper part of the branch. The terminal part of the female gametophyte is a little twisted with thick branches. The cystocarps are spherical and most of them are located in ventral side of the upper branch points. The male gametophyte is smaller with less branches. Its terminal part is a little twisted with pale colour. The pit connections of the vegetative cells of every thallus are all well developed. The carpogonial branch consists of four cells. Generally, it is formed by the division of the pericentral cell. After fertilization of the carpogonium, an auxiliary cell is formed by the division of supporting cell. Usually five to seven, even more than ten young procarps can be formed at the apical part of the reproductive branch. The procarps often occur on consecutive segments of pericentral ceils. But among most of them only a carpogonium is fertilized and developes into cystocarp. When a carpogonium is fertilized, the other one on this branch usually cease further development. The spermatangia are formed on the lateral wing cells of both sides of the upper part midrib of a reproductive branch and distributed on both dorsal and ventral surfaces. A vegetative cell is divided into three cells in parallel to the surface of the thallus. The cortical cells under the two outer surfaces forms three to four permatangial mother cells. Each spermatangial mother cell divides into two to four spermatangia. After the sperm dispersal of the mature spermatangia, the spermatangial mother cells are still retained on both sides of the middle discoid cells.     

Structure of a fucoidan from the brown seaweed Fucus evanescens C.Ag

A fucoidan consisting of L-fucose, sulfate and acetate in a molar proportion of 1:1.23:0.36 was isolated from the Pacific brown seaweed Fucus evanescens. The structures of its desulfated and de-O-acetylated derivatives were investigated by 1D and 2D (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy, and the data obtained were confirmed by methylation analysis of the native and desulfated polysaccharides. The fucoidan was shown to contain a linear backbone of alternating 3- and 4-linked alpha-L-fucopyranose 2-sulfate residues: -->3)-alpha-L-Fucp(2SO(3)(-))-(1-->4)-alpha-L-Fucp(2SO(3)(-))-(1-->. Additional sulfate occupies position 4 in a part of 3-linked fucose residues, whereas a part of the remaining hydroxyl groups is randomly acetylated.     

Fine structure study on the development of trabeculae in the siphonous green algaCaulerpa simpliciuscula C. Ag.

Summary Bundles of fibrils and tubular structures were found to be associated with growing trabeculae ofCaulerpa simpliciuscula. In the rhizome tips, the bundles had an average diameter of 0.1 to 0.3 m, and a length greater than 10 m. The fibrils in the bundles were oriented in a strictly parallel fashion, with an individual thickness of 3–8 nm. The development of trabeculae started with the apposition of material of low electron density onto the bundles, which in this way became the inner skeleton of the trabeculae.Although fibre bundles with the same internal structure also occurred in the frond tip, these rarely contributed to trabecula formation. In the frond tips a different type of bundle with paracrystalline structure was found associated with the trabecular surface, forming a temporary connection between adjacent trabeculae. Permanent connection was achieved by deposition of further layers of trabecular material. These bundles in the frond tip consisted of two layers of tubular elements with a wall thickness of 80 Å and an inner diameter of 20–25 nm.Both fibre bundles and tubular bundles appear to contribute to trabecula formation. The similarity of these structures to the vacuolar inclusions observed in other siphonous algae is discussed.     

High-Quantum Efficiency of the Plasmonic Photodetectors-Based on Coupling Between Ag Nanoparticles and Ag Nanograting Electrodes

The plasmonic effects due to the coupling of silver spherical nanoparticles with silver nanograting electrodes on active medium of the photo detector are investigated. Calculations show that the coupling of nanoparticles and nanograting electrodes at the surface of active medium lead to reflection wave into the active medium, and electrodes can participate in the absorption and quantum efficiency. Calculations show that the addition of nanograting electrodes to the structure can lead to increase the absorption coefficient up to 120% respect to the plasmonic structure containing only nanoparticles and about 4.5 times that of conventional (metal-semiconductor -metal ) MSM photo detectors.

     

Photomovement of the red alga Porphyridium cruentum (Ag.) naegeli I. Photokinesis

Photokinesis of the red alga Porphyridium cruentum was studied with the aid of a population method. Because of the slow spreading velocity (0.35 m/min) the duration of the experiments was 7 days in general. According to the white light illuminance-response curve the zero threshold of photokinesis lies below 10 lx and the optimum around 10,000 lx. With further increasing illuminance the photokinetic effect decreases, reaching zero at about 100,000 lx. The action spectrum indicates that the photokinetically active radiation is absorbed by photosynthetic pigments, namely the biliproteins B-phycoerythrin, R-phycocyanin and allo-phycocyanin, as well as by chlorophyl a, although the photokinetic effect of blue light is relatively low. From the action spectrum and the results of inhibitor experiments with DCMU, DBMIB and DSPD it is concluded that the photokinetic effect is due to an additional ATP supply from non-cyclic and/or pseudo-cyclic photophosphorylation to the motor apparatus.Abbreviations DCMU 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1, 1-dimethylurea - DBMIB Dibromothymoquinone (2,5-dibromo-3-methyl-6-isopropyl-p-benzoquinone) - DSPD Disalicylidenepropanediamine-(1,3)     

The role of bacteria in the metal tolerance of the fouling diatom Amphora coffeaeformis Ag.

Components of “spent” axenic and non-axenic Amphora coffeaeformis Ag. culture media were tested for their effect on copper and tributyltin tolerance in axenic A. coffeaeformis. Growth of such algal cultures in the presence of either toxin was enhanced by the addition of enriched “spent” medium from exponentially growing non-axenic cultures. This response was seen whether or not the bacteria had been removed. It appears that bacteria or bacteria-algal interactions produce some soluble (<0.2 μm) factor which either decreases the toxicity of copper and tributyltinfluoride (TBTF) or increases the tolerance of A. coffeaeformis to these toxins.
