通过对北京西部山区胡枝子(Lespedeza bicolor Turcz.)种群个体和构件地上生物量进行系统研究。结果表明, 种群(总和)个体和各构件地上生物量积累与年龄的关系均可用方程式Y=axb表示。不同种群的植株个体和构件生物量有显著性不同(P<0.05), 在海拔910-1 100 m的山脊林缘的种群个体和构件地上生物量较其它种群大, 植株地上营养构件的生物量比率较小, 而繁殖构件生物量比率较大; 不适生境中的种群则反之。种群个体生长和各构件生物量动态与环境条件关系密切。构件生物量比率也随着年龄的增长而有所变化。叶生物量比率随年龄增加而减小; 枝构件生物量比率随年龄增加而增大; 繁殖构件的生物量比率随年龄增加先增后减。依据相关指数R2, 筛选各构件生物量估计的最优模型: 枝、枝叶生物量和地上生物量均为m(DW)= a(D2H1)b, 叶生物量和花果生物量均为m(DW)=a(D)b。  相似文献

Bowfin Amia calva are a common species throughout the Mississippi River basin. Although they are generally regarded as a 'rough' fish by management agencies and anglers, commercial harvest for their roe has increased in the upper Mississippi River (UMR) basin. Unfortunately, bowfin population dynamics have not received extensive study, resulting in a lack of information that can be used to guide management efforts, particularly in the UMR. The purpose of this study was to investigate the age structure, growth, and reproductive ecology (e.g. age at maturity, fecundity) of bowfin in Pools 11 and 13 of the UMR during the spring of 2007. 118 bowfin from Pool 11 and 138 bowfin from Pool 13 were sampled using modified fyke nets and electrofishing. Size structure, age structure, and growth were similar and sex ratios were near 1:1 in both pools. Female bowfin matured at age 3 and had gonadosomatic index (GSI) values around 9; male bowfin matured at age 2 and had GSI values near 1. Total annual mortality of age-4 and older fish was around 35% for both populations. In both pools, rates of total annual mortality of males were approximately 10% higher than those of females. Growth overfishing occurred in a simulated population with a 500-mm minimum length limit. Recruitment overfishing occurred with 500-mm, 559-mm, and 584-mm limits at moderate to high levels of exploitation; a 635-mm minimum prevented recruitment overfishing at all levels of exploitation.  相似文献

The age structures and reproductive characteristics of three populations of the crustose red alga Lithophyllum incrustans from Orkney, Northumberland and South Devon are described. Geographical trends in values of the generation time and the capacity for increase ( r m) are shown for each population. Reproductive allocation, however, shows no such trend. Whilst 16% of the populations are sexual in Devon, only 4% are sexual in Northumberland, and sexual plants are absent from Orkney.  相似文献

Differences in the reproductive mode (sexual and vegetative reproduction) between populations of a species may produce diverse patterns of genetic structure within and among populations. We analyzed the clonal diversity of populations of a heterostylous plant (Nymphoides indica (L.) Kuntze) having different floral morph ratios in the Higashi-harima area of Japan. The number of MLGs (multilocus genotypes) in populations with equal floral morph ratios was significantly higher than that among populations with biased floral morph ratios and among monomorphic populations. Populations with equal floral morph ratios followed the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. A dispersal distance of 0–4.2 km was significantly correlated with Nei's genetic distance, supporting a stepping-stone model of dispersal. Four rare MLGs were included in populations with equal floral morph ratios, distributed among neighboring populations. We concluded that clonal diversity of N. indica in the Higashi-harima area is maintained by the success of seed production and establishment of seedlings, and by the proximate occurrence of habitats around the populations where successful sexual reproduction occurs.  相似文献

Since flowering often varies among years in wind-pollinated woody species, the genetic composition of pollen pools accepted by seed parents can differ between years. The interannual heterogeneity of pollen flow may be important for maintaining genetic diversity within populations because it can increase genetic variation within populations and the effective sizes of the populations. In this study we examined heterogeneity, using paternity analysis and analysis of molecular variance, in the genetic composition of pollen pools among different reproductive years for six Quercus salicina seed parents in an 11.56-ha plot in a temperate old-growth evergreen broadleaved forest. The genotypes at seven microsatellite loci were determined for 111 adult trees and 777 offspring of the six seed parents in 2-5 reproductive years. Genetic differentiation of pollen pools among different reproductive years for each seed parent was significant over all seed parents and for each of four seed parents that were analysed for more than 2 years, but not for either of the other two seed parents (analysed for 2 years). For both the pollen pools originating from inside the plot and those originating from outside it, genetic differentiation among different reproductive years for each seed parent was significant over all seed parents. However, among-year genetic differentiation in the pollen pools originating from within the plot was detected for all four of the seed parents that were analysed for more than 2 years, but for only one of the four in the pools originating from outside the plot. Genetic diversity (estimated as allelic richness and gene diversity) was higher for pollen pools over all reproductive years than for pollen pools in single years. These results indicate that the year-to-year genetic variation of pollen pools increases genetic diversity in offspring and is strongly affected by the variation in pollen parents within the plot because of their high pollination contributions. The high year-to-year variation in pollen parents within the plot and overall supports the hypothesis that the offspring produced across years represent a larger genetic neighbourhood.  相似文献

A flow-system multiparameter cell analyzer that simultaneously measures and processes fluorescence and cell volume signals from single cells was used to study the binding of fluorescein-conjugated Concanavalin A (Con A–F) to the cell surface. Cells reacted with Con A–F were passed through a flow chamber where sensors measured both cell volume and fluorescence of each individual cell. Sensor signals were electronically processed by first converting the cell volume signals to two-thirds power (proportional to surface area) and then forming the fluorescence-to-surface area ratio. These ratios, which were considered as estimates of the surface density of binding sites, were displayed as frequency distribution histograms using a multichannel pulse-height analyzer for various cell populations differing in cell size. Comparisons between cell lines showed characteristic differences in binding site density. Cell cycle dependent changes were not found for CHO cells synchronized by mitotic selection. An important benefit of this analysis method was the ability to quantitate very weak cell surface fluorescence.  相似文献

By studying the import of radioactively labelled small subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (pSS) into chloroplasts of the green alga C. reinhardtii cw-15 protein delivery to chloroplasts was found to vary during the cell cycle. Chloroplasts were isolated from highly synchronous cultures at different time points during the cell cycle. When pSS was imported into 'young' chloroplasts isolated early in the light period about three times less pSS was processed to small subunit SS than in 'mature' chloroplasts from the middle of the light period. In 'young' chloroplasts also, less pSS was bound to the envelope surface. During the second half of the light period the import competence of isolated chloroplasts decreased again when based on chlorophyll content or cell volume, but did not change significantly when related to chloroplast number. Measurements of pSS binding to the surface of chloroplasts of different age indicated that the adaptation of protein import competence during the cell cycle is due to a variation of the number of binding sites per chloroplast surface area, rather than to modulation of the binding constant.  相似文献

Dolphin pool design often derives from the concept that cetaceans are ocean based and ipso facto should live in open, deep, watery spaces. This emotionally appealing rationale is not data driven. Researchers report that in the wild, some populations of Atlantic bottlenosed dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) reside in shallower areas (approximately 2 m deep) and move to deeper areas only when resources become scarce. This study observed a well-established pod of 7 Atlantic bottlenosed dolphins at the Indianapolis Zoo and tested the hypothesis that they would select areas similar to their natural habitat and avoid areas of significantly larger volumes of water (in captivity, a combination of depth and surface area). This hypothesis was confirmed. When given free choice, the dolphins used moderate areas 67.8% of the time, smaller areas 36% of the time, and larger areas 2.9% of the time. This study evaluated the choices using 4 models based on surface area, volume (in gallons), depth, and location preferences, respectively. Choices of pool and area were significantly different from surface area, volume, depth, and location preference null hypothesis predictions-suggesting that larger pools in captive facilities may not be the preferred environment for dolphins.  相似文献

The relative importance of age and size as predictors of demographic parameters such as survivorship or reproductive status is generally unknown for herbaceous perennials, due primarily to the difficulty in estimating the age of herbaceous plants. We investigated the relationship between age, size, and reproductive status in Trillium grandiflorum, a rhizomatous perennial herb in which age can be estimated. We measured the leaf area and rhizome volume and estimated the age of plants in a study population that included reproductive and nonreproductive individuals. Reproductive plants were significantly older ( = 22.8 years) than nonreproductive plants ( = 13.3 years). Reproductive plants also had significantly larger total leaf areas and rhizome volumes. Total leaf area, rhizome volume, and age were positively correlated in both groups. Reproduction in this population occurred once plants reached a threshold leaf area or rhizome volume. Both measures of plant size, i.e., total leaf area and rhizome volume, were better predictors of plant reproductive status than was plant age.  相似文献

A cyclic Clethrionomys glareolus population from north Sweden was compared with a non-cyclic population from south Sweden regarding age structure, body weight, reproductive development and suppression, and sex ratios.The non-cyclic population, after years with winter breeding, was characterized by especially early and intense breeding in spring and many post-reproductive animals in autumn. Non-cyclic populations with no winter reproduction were similar to increase years in cyclic populations. In peak and especially in decline phases of cyclic populations reproduction decreased clearly below the level in non-cyclic populations. Animal weights varied insignificantly between years in the non-cyclic population but changed greatly in the cyclic population.A unifying hypothesis for explaining variations in animal quality between different populations is proposed: Maternal conditions related to food supply are assumed to affect body growth and sexual maturation of the young. Predictions from this hypotheses are outlined and compared with those from competing ideas.  相似文献

Understanding the dispersal processes that influence genetic structure in marine species requires estimating gene flow in a dynamic, fluid environment that is often poorly characterized at scales relevant to multiple dispersive stages (e.g. spores, gametes, zygotes, larvae, adults). We examine genetic structure in the marine alga Fucus vesiculosus L., which inhabits moderately exposed shores in the northern Atlantic but releases gametes only under sunny, calm conditions. We predicted genetic structure would correlate with coastal topography because weather frequently varies across coastal promontories on the Maine shore when F. vesiculosus is reproductive, which causes one side to experience high levels of water motion (= no gamete release) while one side is calm (= gamete release). Furthermore, we expected that the effect of low dispersal capacities of gametes and zygotes would result in spatial genetic structure over short distances. Using surface drifters, we characterized near-shore circulation patterns around the study sites to investigate whether directionality of gene flow was correlated with directionality of currents. We found significant genetic differentiation among sites sampled at two different peninsulas, but patterns of differentiation were unrelated to coastal topography and there was no within-site spatial structuring. Our genetic and near-shore circulation data, combined with an examination of gamete longevity, support the dependency of gene flow on storm-detached, rafting, reproductive adults. This study highlights the significance of rafting as a mechanism for structuring established populations of macroalgae and associated biota and demonstrates the importance of coupling population genetics' research with relevant hydrodynamic studies.  相似文献

Structural magnetic resonance imaging studies provide evidence for sex differences in the human brain. Differences in surface area and the proportion of gray to white matter volume are observed, in particular in the parietal lobe. To our knowledge, no studies have examined sex differences in parietal lobe structure in younger populations or in the context of development. The present study evaluated sex differences in the structure of the parietal lobe in children aged 7 to 17 years. In addition, by adding a cohort of previously studied adults aged 18 to 50 years, sex differences in parietal lobe structure were examined across the age span of 7 to 50 years. Compared with the adult sample, the younger sample showed that the ratio of parietal lobe cortex to white matter was greater in female brains, but no sex differences in surface area. When examining the effects of age, surface area exhibited a significant sex-age interaction. In male brains, there was essentially no decrease in surfaces area over time, whereas in female brains, there was a significant decrease in surface area over time. These findings support the notion of structural sex differences in the parietal lobe, not only in the context of cross-sectional assessment but also in terms of differences in developmental trajectories.  相似文献

We compared age and sex ratios among Eurasian Wigeon Anas penelope derived from Danish field observations and hunter‐based shot samples throughout an entire winter. Sex ratios did not differ significantly between the two samples. Overall, first‐year males were more than three times more likely to be represented than adult males in the hunter sample compared with field samples and were 7–20 times overrepresented in the hunting sample at the beginning of the season. These results confirm the need to account for such bias and its temporal variation when using the results of hunting surveys to model population parameters. Hunter‐shot age ratios may provide a long‐term measure of reproductive success of dabbling duck flyway populations given an understanding of such bias.  相似文献

We studied the effects of habitat scale (pool size) on the riskof egg cannibalism and the breeding behavior of three-spinedsticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Laboratory experimentsshowed that in pools with similar population density, a largerfraction of males nested in pools of 4.8-m2 surface area thanin 15-m2 pools. Breeding males in the 4.8-m2 pools also hadbigger territories, obtained more eggs, and were more aggressivetoward intruders than those in the 15-m2 pools. The numbersof raids attempted on nests were similar in the two pool sizes.However, raiding-shoal sizes were larger, and hence individualsin these larger shoals were more succesful at overwhelming maleterritorial defenses in the 15-m2 pools than in the 4.8-m2 pools.At the field site, a salt marsh containing hundreds of tidepools of different sizes, sticklebacks settled at similar densitiesin small (<30 m2 surface area) and large (>355 m2) pools.This resulted in significantly more fish being present in largepools than in small pools, a concomitant increase in the amountof nest raiding, and a decrease in individual male reproductivesuccess in large compared to small pools. A photogrammetry analysisof the salt-marsh pools suggests that the majority of fish breedingat the site will be subjected to a high risk of cannibalismbecause most fish nest in large pools. We conclude that spatialscale has a major influence on this species' breeding behaviorand reproductive success.  相似文献

Phenotypic and ontogenetic changes in apparent photosynthesis and dark respiration for Sargassum polyceratium Mont. were related to the differential allocation of resources into blades, stems, vesicles, and fertile branches as well as anatomical parameters of surface area, volume, and blade density from a population in the Content Keys, Florida. Three divergent phenotypes were evaluated during four phases of ontogeny: maximum growth (October), peak reproduction (December), senescence (April), and stasis (July). Photosynthetic and respiratory rates changed throughout the year, at different stages of morphogenesis, and among different phenotypes. Photosynthesis was highest during active growth, decreased during reproduction and senescence, and was lowest during stasis. In contrast, respiration was higher during peak reproduction and stasis. Temporal, phenotypic, and ontogenetic changes in apparent photosynthesis were best explained by interactions among anatomical features, growth stages, and source-sink relationships of metabolic reserves and pigments. Surface area: volume (SA:V) ratios played a secondary role. Photosynthetic performance of mature axes decreased with the allocation of resources away from blades to air bladders and fertile branches. Apparent productivity and development of fertile branches on phenotypes were not correlated. High respiratory rates, SA:V ratios, blade areas, and low blade densities occurred on developing axes and were consistent with adaptations to low light fields. Sargassum polyceratium, because of its morphological differentiation, is a relatively complex, physiologically variable alga.  相似文献

The surface area‐to‐volume ratio of cells is one of the key factors affecting fundamental biological processes and, thus, fitness of unicellular organisms. One of the general models for allometric increase in surface‐to‐volume scaling involves fractal‐like elaboration of cellular surfaces. However, specific data illustrating this pattern in natural populations of the unicellular organisms have not previously been available. This study shows that unicellular green algae of the genus Micrasterias (Desmidiales) have positive allometric surface‐to‐volume scaling caused by changes in morphology of individual species, especially in the degree of cell lobulation. This allometric pattern was also detected within most of the cultured and natural populations analysed. Values of the allometric S:V scaling within individual populations were closely correlated to the phylogenetic structure of the clade. In addition, they were related to species‐specific cellular morphology. Individual populations differed in their allometric patterns, and their position in the allometric space was strongly correlated with the degree of allometric S:V scaling. This result illustrates that allometric shape patterns are an important correlate of the capacity of individual populations to compensate for increases in their cell volumes by increasing the surface area. However, variation in allometric patterns was not associated with phylogenetic structure. This indicates that the position of the populations in the allometric space was not evolutionarily conserved and might be influenced by environmental factors.  相似文献

In many species, males may exhibit alternative life histories to circumvent the costs of intrasexual competition and female courtship. While the evolution and underlying genetic and physiological mechanisms behind alternative reproductive tactics are well studied, there has been less consideration of the ecological factors that regulate their prevalence. Here, we examine six decades of age composition records from thirty‐six populations of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) to quantify associations between spawning habitat characteristics and the prevalence of precocious sneakers known as ‘jacks’. Jack prevalence was independent of neutral genetic structure among stream populations, but varied among habitat types and as a function of continuous geomorphic characteristics. Jacks were more common in streams relative to beaches and rivers, and their prevalence was negatively associated with stream width, depth, elevation, slope and area, but positively related to bank cover. Behavioural observations showed that jacks made greater use of banks, wood and shallows than guard males, indicating that their reproductive success depends on the availability of such refuges. Our results emphasize the role of the physical habitat in shaping reproductive tactic frequencies among populations, likely through local adaptation in response to variable fitness expectations under different geomorphic conditions.  相似文献

1. Reproductive traits were studied in seven wild populations of resident brown trout in Spain. We examined whether growth, and certain environmental conditions such as water temperature or food abundance, could explain interpopulation variation in the reproductive characters.
2. The results indicated that nearby populations subjected to a wide variation in environmental conditions exhibited a similar reproductive performance.
3. Age distributions and sex ratios were not significantly different among populations. Age ranged from 0+ to 4+ years but the populations were dominated by the 0+ to 2+ groups. In all rivers females matured at age 2+ as opposed to age 1+ and 2+ for males. Mean length at the end of the growth period differed significantly among populations. However, annual growth rate was similar among rivers and was not significantly correlated with either biomass of the benthos or water temperature during the growth season.
4. Reproductive effort, body condition, fecundity and egg size did not correlate significantly with either the abundance of benthic invertebrates or water temperature. Once the effect of body length on both egg size and number was removed, a significant negative correlation was found between these two traits among populations.  相似文献
