Observations of young leaf primordia give information about the origin of the fertile spike ofOphioglossum pedunculosum Desv. Each primordium shows a certain asymmetry that is visible in form and position of the fertile spike primordium, but above all in the course of the marginal meristem. The fertile spike primordium is connected with the marginal meristem on the right or that on the left side of the sterile segment. On the basis ot these observations the following concept of the origin of the fertile spike is formed: The marginal meristem curves on one side of the leaf primordium and turns towards the ventral side. This process is followed by meristem fractionation in the course of which the smaller part curved towards the middle of the leaf primordium becomes independent and initiates the development of the fertile spike, whereas the larger part of the marginal meristem contributes to the growth of the sterile segment.

Summary Heritability estimates of five characters of the wheat plant were studied in five crosses involving six cultivars of bread wheat. Parents, F1, F2 and backcrosses to both parents were used in the estimation of the genetic parameters.Heritability was low for number of fertile spikes/plant, moderate for number of spikelets/spike, number of kernels/spike, 1000-kernel weight and moderately high for number of kernels/spike. Evidence for mainly nonadditive gene effects were observed in the expression of number of fertile spikes and 1000-kernel weight. Although nonadditives contributed to a lesser degree to the gene action, additives seemed to be the most important genetic expression regulating number of spikelets/spike, number of kernels/spike, and number of kernels/spikelet. Except for number of fertile spikes/plant, selection in F2-populations seems to be promising.  相似文献

Yield studies show that increases in grain yield are always accompanied by an increase in grain number and, hence, further increases in yield potential may require additional improvements in grain number. The improvement of modern durum wheat was mainly based on the introduction of semidwarf genes. A 2‐year field drought stress experiment, concerning two different genotype groups (landraces vs modern cultivars), was carried out under a rainout shelter in order (a) to assess the effect of water deficit on floret dynamics and grain number determination, (b) to explore the relationship between plant water status with grain number per spike and its components (i.e., spikelets per spike, fertile florets per spikelet and grain set) and (c) to quantify the importance of several plant traits in determining the final number of grains per spike and fertile florets per spike when the main source of variation is water availability. Compared to control (well irrigated), grain number per spike was reduced, depending on year, genotype and water availability level, by 12.4–58.7% and this reduction was evident almost in all spikelet positions along the spike. Although there were some doubts in the past about the increased sensitivity of semidwarf cultivars to drought stress, they were not confirmed from our results. In most of the cases, the variation in plant water status (by means of water potential index [WPI]) during floret primordia phase (FPP) explained most of the variance in grain number per spike, fertile florets per spikelet, grain set and fertile spikelets per spike. In general, increasing water stress intensity decreased grain number per spike by an average rate of 13.5 and 9.4 grains per 0.2 MPa decrease in WPI, in modern cultivars and landraces, respectively. However, seasonal and genotypic effects were evident by modifying the slopes of the linear regressions between WPI and the studied plant traits. Commonality analysis revealed that the number of fertile florets per spikelet was the best predictor of grain number per spike, indicating that there is still much space for further improvement for this trait in landraces. However, this trait has been clearly improved in modern cultivars, especially at the basal and central spikelets. Although the number of spikelets per spike was the best unique predictor of the number of grains per spike in modern cultivars, grain set presented the highest total effect.  相似文献

The frond of Ophioglossum consists of a sterile segment and a fertile segment or spike. An investigation of fertile spike elongation reveals that growth of the spike proceeds by activity of an intercalary meristem located in the most distal region of the peduncle subtending the sporangial area. Anatomical comparisons of all regions of developing spikes, counts of mitotic figures along the length of spikes of various ages, determination of cell lengths of peduncle ground parenchyma cells, and historadioautography of spikes treated with H3-thymidine confirms the presence in the apical portion of the peduncle of a region of frequently dividing cells intercalated between two regions of more mature tissues. Marking experiments indicate that the petiole of the sterile segment of the frond elongates in a similar fashion. Although this type of intercalary meristem is rather common in angiosperm flower scapes and peduncles, this is the first detailed analysis of this type of growth in a pteridophyte genus.  相似文献

Wheat floret survival as related to pre-anthesis spike growth   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Further improvements to wheat yield potential will be essential to meet future food demand. As yield is related to the number of fertile florets and grains, an understanding of the basis of their generation is instrumental to raising yield. Based on (i) a strong positive association between the number of fertile florets or grains and spike dry weight at anthesis; and (ii) the finding that floret death occurs when spikes grow at maximum rate, it was always assumed that floret survival depends on the growth of the spike. However, this assumption was recently questioned, suggesting that assimilates diverted to the spike do not determine the number of florets and grains and that the onset of floret death may instead be a developmental process that is not associated with spike growth. In this study, the relationships between the fate of floret primordia and spike growth from six independent experiments that included different growing conditions (greenhouse/field experiments, growing seasons, photoperiod/shading treatments during the floret primordia phase) and diverse cultivar types (winter/spring, semi-dwarf/standard-height, photoperiod sensitive/insensitive) were re-analysed together. Onset of floret death was associated with the beginning of spike growth at the maximum rate in c. 80% of the cases analysed; and the rate of floret death (the main determinant of floret survival) showed a negative quantitative relationship with spike weight at anthesis. As floret death and survival were shown to be linked to pre-anthesis spike growth, the strategy of focusing on traits associated with pre-anthesis spike growth when breeding to increase wheat yield potential further is valuable.  相似文献

At specific stages during floret development, solutions of IAA,GA3, zeatin and ABA were injected into the leaf sheath around theyoung spike of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to study theregulating effects of exogenous hormones on floret development. Zeatin promotedfloret development and significantly increased the number of fertile florets aswell as grain set, especially at the stage of anther-lobe formation. Zeatinalsoincreased the sugar concentrations in spikes at anthesis. In contrast, IAA,GA3 and ABA inhibited floret development, with different patternsforeach of the hormones. IAA inhibited the development of the whole spike and allflorets in the spikelets such that grain loss occurred in all positions in thespikelets. GA3 increased the number of fertile florets per spike,butdecreased grain set of the third floret in each spikelet, especially whenapplied at terminal spikelet formation. ABA inhibited floret development, anddecreased the number of fertile florets and grain set at almost all developmentstages, except at anther-lobe formation. The inhibitory effect of ABA wasmainlyon the first and third florets in each spikelet.  相似文献

Cytological observations on eleven species of Ophioglossum revealed low gametic ( n ) chromosome numbers of 30, 34 and 60 in populations of O.eliminatum , contrasting with an earlier report of n = 90 in the same species. The rest of the species is based on n =120.Cytologically studied species of Ophioglossum exhibit a range of chromosome numbers from n = 30 in O.eliminatum to n =720 in O.reticulatum. The weighted highest common factor (HGF) from all the reported chromosome numbers in twelve species was found to be 30. This number is proposed as the palaeobasic chromosome number for the genuS. Reported chromosome numbers which are not multiples of 30 were subjected to sequential analysis, yielding three distinct ultimate base numbers, 4, 5 and 6, which can produce n = 30 in seven different ways. The neobasic number, n= 120, appears to have arisen through various combinations and permutations of these, theoretically 2401 routes; only a relatively few of these routes exist today, suggesting that extreme selection has been exerted against the majority, and further suggesting that Ophioglossum represents an evolutionary dead end through repeated cycles of polyploidy and is possibly at the verge of extinction. The stoichiometric model of evolution, which derives the various chromosome numbers possessed by the twelve species from the basic and ultimate basic chromosome numbers, is used to explain chromosomal evolution in the genus.  相似文献

利用普通小麦(Triticum aestivum L.)7182与华山新麦草(Psathyrostachys huashanica)杂交、回交和自交,经多代选育出能够稳定遗传的大穗多花种质B46.对B46进行形态学观察及其细胞学检测与GISH鉴定.结果表明,B46形态学特征表现大穗多花特性,穗长12 cm左右,小穗达23个,小穗粒数平均6个;其根尖细胞染色体计数为2n=44;根尖原位杂交(GISH)及减数分裂中期Ⅰ染色体的基因组原位杂交(GISH)显示,B46附加1对来自于华山新麦草的同源染色体.由此可以确定B46为小麦-华山新麦草的二体异附加系,其综合农艺性状优于小麦亲本7182,可作为培育高产小麦品种的优良种质材料.  相似文献

利用扫描电镜对中国产瓶尔小草科2属7种的孢子进行了研究,其中包括瓶尔小草属6种,即裸茎瓶尔小草(OphioglossumnudicauleL.f)、尖头瓶尔小草(O.pedunculosumDesv.)、钝头瓶尔小草(O.petiolatumHook)、狭叶瓶尔小草(O.thermaleKom.)、心脏叶瓶尔小草(O.reticulatumL.)和瓶尔小草(O.vulgatumL.),蛇蕨属1种,即蛇蕨(又名带状瓶尔小草OphiodermapendulaPresl),对每个种的孢子形态特征进行描述。根据孢子形态特征,我们认为将中国的瓶尔小草科植物分为瓶尔小草属和蛇蕨属两个属是合适的。通过观察,进一步认定孢子外壁的纹饰特征极具分类参考价值,并可以作为种的界限的依据。  相似文献

SUMMARY: The wheat spikelet meristem differentiates into up to 12 floret primordia, but many of them fail to reach the fertile floret stage at anthesis. We combined microarray, biochemical and anatomical studies to investigate floret development in wheat plants grown in the field under short or long days (short days extended with low-fluence light) after all the spikelets had already differentiated. Long days accelerated spike and floret development and greening, and the expression of genes involved in photosynthesis, photoprotection and carbohydrate metabolism. These changes started while the spike was in the light-depleted environment created by the surrounding leaf sheaths. Cell division ceased in the tissues of distal florets, which interrupted their normal developmental progression and initiated autophagy, thus decreasing the number of fertile florets at anthesis. A massive decrease in the expression of genes involved in cell proliferation, a decrease in soluble carbohydrate levels, and an increase in the expression of genes involved in programmed cell death accompanied anatomical signs of cell death, and these effects were stronger under long days. We propose a model in which developmentally generated sugar starvation triggers floret autophagy, and long days intensify these processes due to the increased carbohydrate consumption caused by the accelerated plant development.  相似文献

The period prior to anthesis determines to a great extent the yield in wheat by modifying the number of fertile florets and hence the number of grains per spike. For an easy and accurate identification of this period to researchers and cereal growers a simple numerical scale of wheat spike development is proposed. It includes 20 distinct stages, starting from the apex transition stage and ending just prior to heading, with the stages being separated by similar‐sized steps in thermal time to produce a continuous scale. The scale describes the whole process of wheat apical development and is convenient (e.g. uses easily detectable characters without great magnification, such as the development of awns, lemmas and glumes) and precise (e.g. uses combination of more stable characters, such as pistil and stamen development as well as the sequence of floret initiation, in order to accurately assess the development of the spike). The proposed scale was used to describe the development of the durum wheat cultivar “Mexicali 81” during two seasons. The meteorological conditions during the different cultivation seasons affected the onset and the duration of the spike developmental phases. Additionally, a variation was observed concerning the synchronisation between spike morphogenesis and plant external developmental phases (e.g. tillering, jointing and boot). The advantages of the new scale with respect to the already existing ones are discussed.  相似文献

Homozygosity was induced in transgenic barley by microspore culture. Spikes of transgenic barley plants carrying microspores in the late uni-nucleate stage were cold pretreated. Teflon rod maceration and a density of 100 000 viable micropores per plate were used. The developed calli were regenerated and plantlets were treated with colchicine. The microspore culture of 16 mother plants (three transgenic lines) resulted in 927 green regenerants. Of these plants, 476 were transferred to soil, 380 were transgenic, 358 reached maturity and 350 were fertile with a normal seed-set carrying a yield of 6.9 kg. A production efficiency of 0.8 fertile transgenic doubled haploid barley plants per spike used for microspore isolation was recorded. The produced transgenic seeds were used in malting experiments.  相似文献

The levels of endogenous plant hormones regulate floret development and degeneration, and thus grain set in flower crops. This study was undertaken to characterize the changes of endogenous hormone levels during floret development in three wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes: “97J1" with the highest grain set and fertile florets per spike, “H8679" with the lowest grain set and fertile florets per spike, and a medium, “YM158". The results showed that the peak level of ABA appeared between stamen and pistil differentiation and antherlobe formation of floret development, and the timing delayed with the size of spike (earliest in “H8679” and latest in “97J1”). From antherlobe formation to meiosis, the levels of ABA and GA1+3decreased sharply in the ears of “97J1”, while in the ears of “H8679” there was only a slight decrease in ABA, and even an increase in GA1+3. The ratio of isopentenyladenosine (iPA)/ABA and IAA/ABA in the ears of “97J1” increased sharply from antherlobe formation to meiosis, but changed only slightly in the ears of “H8679”. At antherlobe formation, IAA and GA1+3 levels were higher in the ears of “97J1”, but lower in the ears of “H8679”than in the leaves. At meiosis, ABA, GA1+3 and IAA levels in the “97J1” ears were much lower than in the leaves, but similar in “H8679”. These results indicated that the sharp decreases of ABA and GA1+3 in ears from antherlobe formation to meiosis and the lowest maintenance at meiosis may be favorable for development of fertile florets and enhancement of grain set in wheat.  相似文献

A simple procedure is described for the mechanical isolation of protoplasts of unfertilized and fertilized barley egg cells from dissected ovules. Viable protoplasts were isolated from ~75% of the dissected ovules. Unfertilized protoplasts did not divide, whereas almost all fertilized protoplasts developed into microcalli. These degenerated when grown in medium only. When cocultivated with barley microspores undergoing microspore embryogenesis, the protoplasts of the fertilized egg cells developed into embryo-like structures that gave rise to fully fertile plants. On average, 75% of cocultivated protoplasts of fertilized egg cells developed into embryo-like structures. Fully fertile plants were regenerated from ~50% of the embryo-like structures. The isolation-regeneration techniques may be largely genotype independent, because similar frequencies were obtained in two different barley varieties with very different performance in anther and microspore culture. Protoplasts of unfertilized and fertilized eggs of wheat were isolated by the same procedure, and a fully fertile wheat plant was regenerated by cocultivation with barley microspores.  相似文献

Improving the yield stability of cereal crops with a view to bolstering global food security is an important priority. The components of final grain number per plant at harvest are determined by fertile spikes per plant, number of fertile spikelets per spike and number of grains per spikelet. In this review article, we focus on the genetic factors of floral development and inflorescence architecture known to influence grain number and provide a broad overview of genes and genetic pathways that potentially can be manipulated to increase the yield of cereal crops, in particular wheat (Triticum aestivum) and barley (Hordeum vulgare). In addition, we discuss the outcome of multidisciplinary genomics knowledge to identify potential gene targets to develop conceptual ideotypes to meet the future demand.  相似文献

Ophioglossaceae are a putatively ancient lineage of ferns in which the aerial portion of the plant is composed of a single leaf. The simplicity of foliar morphology has limited the number of characters available for constructing classifications and contributed to taxonomic difficulties at nearly every level of classification within the family. Analysis of plastid DNA rbcL sequences from 36 species representing the diversity of Ophioglossaceae supported the monophyly of the family. Intrafamilial relationships were examined using rbcL and trnL-F plastid DNA sequences and morphological data. Individual and combined analyses of the three data sets revealed two main clades within the family, here termed ophioglossoid and botrychioid. In the botrychioid clade, Helminthostachys was sister to a broadly defined Botrychium, within which Botrychium in the narrow sense of some authors and Sceptridium were sister. Botrypus was paraphyletic, with Botrypus virginianus sister to Botrychium plus Sceptridium, and with Botrypus strictus sister to all other botrychioid species except Helminthostachys. In the ophioglossoid clade, Ophioglossum in the narrow sense was sister to Cheiroglossa plus Ophioderma, but relationships within Ophioglossum were not well supported.  相似文献

于2008-2010年,在山西省临汾市尧都区半干旱、半湿润季风气候区,通过大田试验研究了玉米秸秆连续还田条件下灌水模式对冬小麦籽粒产量、干物质转移及水肥利用效率的影响.结果表明:浇越冬水可促进小麦分蘖;浇拔节水可提高分蘖成穗率,增加成穗数;浇孕穗水可促进穗部干物质积累,提高千粒重.浇2水时,推迟第2次浇水时期使叶片干物质转移量和穗粒数增加;浇2水比浇l水的肥料表观利用率高,可促进穗部干物质积累.越冬水灌水量和总灌水量对分蘖、穗部干物质积累的影响较小;拔节期或孕穗期增加灌水量则更有利于养分吸收及干物质积累与转移,提高籽粒水分利用效率,产量构成因素协调,增产效果明显.因此,确保越冬水可实现稳产,在越冬水基础上,拔节期增量灌水(900 m3·hm-2)可满足冬小麦中后期生长发育的需要,提高籽粒水分利用效率,实现节水高产栽培.  相似文献

Changes in the variability of quantitative characters (number of fertile stems, length of the stem and of the spike, number of spikelets in the spike, number of seeds in the spike and in the spikelet) in M2 induced with 0·1 mM, 0·2 mM and 0·3 mM N-nitroso-N-methylurea (MNH) and with 5000r and 10 000 r of X-rays inTriticum monococcum L. var.sofianum Körn. were evaluated. The mean of the populations remained practically unchanged by the mutagens whereas the variability increased considerably with increasing concentration or dose. Changes in the variability were more pronounced in the values for the first stem than in the values for the first three stems. When changes in the population mean were found (with some of the most elevated concentrations and doses), these changes were shown to be mostly due to a repetition of the cultivation, whereas the changes in the variability were mostly due to the action of the mutagens. In all experimental populations, mutations in quantitative characters were successfully induced.  相似文献
