Summary Chitinolytic activity was quantified in euphausiid integuments in relation to moulting. In Euphausia superba, shortly before moult the activity increased in chitinase and N-acetyl--D-glucosaminidase to pronounced maxima indicating the onset of massive resorption of cuticular material. Enzymatic activity of E. superba corresponded to values in Meganyctiphanes norvegica, a boreal euphausiid which was investigated for comparison, as well as in insecta. Antarctic krill from winter catches displayed activities comparable to summer material suggesting physiological preparation for moulting. Accordingly, moulting did not cease during winter. Both enzymes were also active in the digestive tract in summer as well as in winter krill: chitin containing food of phyto-and zooplankton origin is digestable. Seasonally stable activities did not point to changes in nutritional preference. In contrast to other crustacea, digestive enzyme activity was not reduced around moult, suggesting a high capacity to continuously utilize food sources including chitin. Summary The amount and types of prostaglandins present in Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba Dana.) were estimated. Samples of fresh krill were collected during III Antarctic Cruise of RV Polarstern in November 1984. Prostaglandins were extracted, separated by column and thin-layer chromatography and identified as PGA2, PGB2, PGE2, PGF2. Quantitative measurements were made by a biological method (Vane cascade), concentrations of the most abundant prostaglandins PGE2 and PGF2 being 1.6 and 4 ng/1 g of fresh tissue, respectively. Such low level of prostaglandin would not be harmful when using krill as a food supplement.  相似文献

Summary Juvenile Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) were fed the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum at concentrations ranging from 0.0–5.0 mgCl-1. Intermoult period (IP) decreased, but an increment of body length per moult (BL) of juvenile krill increased, up to a concentration of 1.0 mgCl-1. No further effect of food concentrations on IP or BL was seen at concentration beyond 1.0 mgCl-1. IP plateaued at 23.8 days and BL, 1.14 mm. The maximum daily growth rate (BL/IP) of juvenile krill was calculated to be 0.047 mm day-1. BL and IP were correlated and the relationship is expressed as BL=-0.0066IP+2.47 (r=0.58, n=141, P<0.01). Growth conditions of krill in the Southern Ocean are discussed in terms of available food concentration in there.  相似文献

This study examined the diet of Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, from an active breeding colony at Cape Shirreff (62°28S, 60°48W), Livingston Island, South Shetland Archipelago, Antarctica. It analysed faecal samples from five consecutive years (1997–2001) and length distribution of krill taken by trawl nets in the vicinity of Livingston Island. Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, was the most frequent prey item, followed by several myctophid species (Gymnoscopelus nicholsi, Electrona antarctica and Electrona carlsbergi), squid and penguin remains. From 1998 to 2001, a modal progression in krill size was evident, suggesting that A. gazella was depending on a strong krill cohort, at least over the study period. Analysis of size distribution and size selectivity of krill preyed upon by fur seals suggests a preference for larger krill (>34 mm), despite the broader size range of preys items available.  相似文献

Genetic homogeneity of krill (Euphausia superba Dana) in the Southern Ocean   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
Summary Development of a comprehensive picture of the genetic population structure of the Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) has been hampered by a lack of genetic data from two major areas of the species' distribution, the Bellingshausen Sea and the Ross Sea. Evidence from earlier studies of a discrete Bellingshausen Sea population was based on anomalous allele frequencies in two sample sets that were collected near the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula rather than in the Bellingshausen Sea proper. In this paper we describe the first biochemical genetic data obtained on krill from the central Bellingshausen Sea and from the Ross Sea. Analyses of eight polymorphic loci in samples from these two areas have failed to provide any evidence of population structuring within the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean, and have indicated that Pacific sector krill cannot be genetically discriminated from Atlantic sector krill or Indian Ocean sector krill. These findings further support the hypothesis of a single circumpolar breeding population of Antarctic krill.  相似文献

Summary Experiments conducted at US Palmer Station, 1980 on antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, attempted 1) to quantify and describe behavioral features of ingestion, food clearance and egestion, and 2) to test the hypotheses that feeding and swarming are mutually exclusive events, and that feeding is a cyclical, diel phenomenon. Ingestion was quantified in a large flow-through aquarium. Food clearance and egestion were estimated visually and fluorometrically in E. superba individually kept in one liter jars. Ingestion was directly proportional to chlorophyll concentration (0.65–11.5 gChl/l) and did not change significantly as a function of krill density (200–9000 krill/m3). Ingestion and egestion did not show significant diel trends or mean day-night differences in a 16 h light-8 h dark cycle. Our results suggested that feeding may occur in nature: at swarm densities, within a wide range of phytoplankton concentrations, and may be sustained throughout the diel cycle. We propose that feeding and swarming are co-occurring events. We examined the natural variation in parameters of the breeding success of Wilsons storm-petrels on King George Island, South Shetland Islands, during seven breeding seasons, and determined the relative influence of krill abundance and climatic conditions. Feeding frequencies, feeding rates and meal sizes varied between years, and feeding rates were correlated with data of the Antarctic krill Euphausia superba abundance in the Elephant Island region. The overall breeding success of breeding pairs was low, ranging from 0 to 34%. Snow storms and wind conditions depressed breeding success even in years of good food availability, and snow storms were the most important determinant of the breeding success over the seven seasons. Snow storms during the breeding season occurred during periods of prevailing easterly winds. In addition, the distribution of wind directions was found to strongly influence the krill availability to storm-petrels.  相似文献

 Feeding behaviour of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) on salps was observed in shipboard experiments during the 1994/1995 Kaiyo Maru Antarctic Ocean research cruise. The feeding rate was more than 0.5 salp/krill per day. When offered ethanol extracts of four prey types, salps, phytoplankton, krill and polychaetes, krill preferred the salp extracts. This evidence implies that the substances extracted from salps were most attractive to krill. These results might indicate a tight ecological relationship between krill and salps. The infection rate of eugregarine parasites, Cephaloidophora pacifica, within the digestive tract of larval Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, was examined using samples collected from the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean. Immature and mature eugregarine gamont stages were found at all larval stages older than Calyptopis I stage. Eugregarine infection in 14.0% (N = 108) of the first feeding stage (Calyptopis I) suggested that krill larvae are at risk from being infected during physiological transition from non-feeding to feeding stages. Eugregarine prevalence and intensity of infection at the three calyptopis stages increased with stage/krill length. Statistical analysis showed that the intensity of C. pacifica infection also increased with host density. Thus, krill density is probably a key determinant of the intensity of infection. We found gamont stage eugregarines in the host hind-gut, blocking the passage of food. Eugregarine infections in larval krill may have a negative impact on digestion and absorption in the host digestive tract.  相似文献

Whole Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba collected along the Western Antarctic Peninsula, were analyzed for 14 elements. Average element abundances (in parentheses) in g/g, in descending order, were as follows: P(9940), Cu (80.5), Zn (43.5), Fe (28.0), Se (5.80), Ba (3.78), Mn (1.98), As (1.92), Ag (1.71), Ni (0.54), Cr (0.30), Cd (0.29), Pb (0.22), and Hg (0.025). Inverse relationships were found between krill length and Hg concentration as well as between As and P levels. A geographic trend of increasing Mn and P levels from southwest to northeast along the Antarctic Peninsula was Sound. Results were compared to earlier data for evidence of metal concentration changes due to anthropogenic activity over the last 15 years.  相似文献

Summary The spring (November) and early summer (December) distribution pattern and demography of Euphausia superba in the seasonally ice covered areas of the north-western Weddell Sea are described. Sampling with a Rectangular Midwater Trawl (RMT) and during SCUBA diving were undertaken in the pack-ice during the EPOS expedition 1988/1989 of RV Polarstern. These data were compared with former cruises during late winter (October) and summer (February). The biomass values of krill (1–27 g/m2) in the water column within the ice covered areas were of the same order of magnitude as earlier acoustic estimates in the ice-edge region of the same area. No significant correlation between percentage ice cover and krill abundance in the water column was found. Cluster analyses of size frequency distributions and maturity stage composition revealed the demography of the animals sampled. Samples obtained by SCUBA and RMT are compatible and results show a geographic and demographic separation of the krill. It is proposed that krill in the northern zone are largely emigrants from the Bellingshausen Sea, while the krill in the southern zone are of eastern Weddell Sea origin. Further studies concentrating on the under-ice distribution of krill are recommended.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation. This study documents horizontal distribution and demography of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) from the Southern Ocean during January–March 2008. The cruise predominantly occurred in CCAMLR Subarea 48.6, where knowledge about the ecosystem is limited. E. superba were not found north of 52°S. The biomass, estimated from trawl catches, was highest (63.09 g/m2) at a station 680 km southeast of Bouvetøya and at two stations 1,400 and 600 km southeast and southwest of Bouvetøya, 54.67 and 61.38 g/m2, respectively. Body length ranged from 19 to 61 mm (N = 8,538), with a mean of 42.0 ± 6.4 mm (SD). The overall sex ratio was 1:1, 46.2% males (13.2% adults and 33.0% subadults), 46.1% females (33.6% adults and 12.5% subadults), while 7.5% were juveniles. Trawl stations dominated by adults were found west and north of Bouvetøya. Stations with high proportions of subadults and juveniles were mainly found southeast of the island. Four cluster groups were differentiated: analyzing data on krill sex proportions, maturity stages, hydrography, nutrients and chlorophyll concentrations. Two groups represented stations located in the northern part of the study area, where E. superba were absent; water temperatures were higher and the nutrient concentrations lower compared to the groups where E. superba were present. This study shows that bathymetric features like the North Weddell Ridge including Bouvetøya are important for concentrating krill probably due to water mass characteristics and advective processes which influence regional krill demography. The southern regions of CCAMLR sector 48.6 are essential for understanding regional krill recruitment and production.  相似文献

Food and daily food consumption of southern minke whales in the Antarctic   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
Summary The stomach contents of 273 southern minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) taken in the region 55°S to the ice-edge and between 105°E and 115°E by a Japanese survey during 1987/88 were examined. The minke whales' dominant feeding ground coincided with a distinctive hydrographic front in the vicinity of the ice-edge at the mouth of Vincennes Bay. Krill (Euphausia superba) were the dominant food species comprising 100% and 94% by weight of stomach contents in the ice-edge and offshore zones, respectively. In the offshore zone, minke whales tend to feed on E. superba rather than Thysanoessa macrura, which is found more frequently than the former in net samples. Total food consumption by minke whales per day was estimated to be 1170 t (22.1 kg/km2) and 596 t (2.0 kg/km2) in the ice-edge and offshore zones, respectively. Feeding activity peaked in the early morning in the ice-edge zone, whereas it occurred irregularly throughout the day in the offshore zone. Two size modes of krill (25–28 mm in body length (1 year-old) and 41–48 mm (3–4 year-old)) dominated the diet. Although the former was numerically more abundant, the latter dominated the diet by weight, suggesting that larger krill are more important food for minke whales. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) protein serves as a novel sustainable protein source for human. Krill protein isolate was phosphorylated by the dry-heating method with sodium pyrophosphate. Phosphorylated peptides from Antarctic krill (PP-AKP) were obtained from phosphorylated protein through tryptic hydrolysis. Two types of phosphate bonds were introduced by phosphorylation, i.e. PO and PO bonds. The anti-osteoporotic activities of PP-AKP at two doses (400 and 800 mg/kg body weight) were investigated with an osteoporotic rat model, which was established with bilateral ovariectomy surgery. Different doses of PP-AKP were given intraperitoneal injections to rats once a day with alendronate as a positive control. Phosphorylated peptides from Antarctic krill dose-dependently preserved bone mineral density in osteoporotic rats by increasing the degree of bone mineralization. Both trabecular and cortical bone strength in osteoporotic rats was significantly improved with PP-AKP treatment. The mechanism by which PP-AKP augmented bone mineral density and bone strength was relation to the reduction in osteoclast-mediated bone remodeling, as was supported by the decrease in bone resorption markers. Phosphorylated peptides from Antarctic krill could be developed as functional food or nutritional supplements.  相似文献

Summary Samples of Antarctic krill Euphausia superba from 16 locations in the Weddell Sea, Scotia Sea and on the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula were analysed for protein variation using enzyme electrophoresis techniques. Analysis of allele distributions indicate that samples from all locations are part of a single breeding population of krill. Significant departures from random mating expectations were observed in the distribution of electrophoretic phenotypes of the enzymes esterase and glucose phosphate isomerase. Possible explorations of these results are advanced, but they do not materially affect conclusions concerning population structure. The spatial and temporal distribution of electrophoretically detected genetic variation in Atlantic and Pacific sector krill stocks is discussed by comparing the results of this study with those of previous authors working with E. superba.  相似文献

The influence of copepods (mainly Oithona sim-ilis) and krill (Euphausia superba) grazing on the species composition of plankton communities in ship board con tainers was investigated during the spring and post spring period in the Scotia Weddell Sea in the Antarctic ocean. Numbers of grazers were experimentally manipulated in containers with natural phytoplankton assemblages. With ratural levels of copepods but no krill a high (700–950 g C·l1, ca 30 g chl a·.l1) phytoplankton biomass developed. In these cultures large diatoms, e.g. Corethron criophilum and chains of Thalassiosira sp., made up 80% of total phytoplankton cell carbon at the end of the experiment. In cultures with elevated numbers of copepods (5X or 10X the natural level) phytoplankton biomass was somewhat reduced (ca 23 g chl a · l1) compared to cultures with natural copepod abundance, but still high. Phytoplankton species composition was on the other hand greatly influenced. Instead of large diatoms these cultures were dominated by Phaeocystis pouchetii (70%) together with small Nitszchia sp. and Chaetoceros neogracile (20%). In containers with krill (both juveniles and adults), but without elevated numbers of copepods, phytoplankton biomass rapidly approached zero. With 10X the in situ level of copepods, krill first preyed on these before Corethron criophilum and Thalassiosira sp. were grazed. When krill were removed a plankton community dominated by flagellates (60–90%), e.g. Pyramimonas sp. and a Cryptophycean species, grazed by an unidentified droplet-shaped heterothrophic flagellate, developed. These flagellates were the same as those which dominated the plankton community in the Weddell Sea after the spring bloom. A similar succession was observed in situ when a krill swarm grazed down a phytoplankton bloom in a few hours. Our experiments show that copepods cannot control phytoplankton biomass in shipboard cultures even at artificially elevated numbers. Krill at concentrations similar to those in natural swarms have a great impact on both phytoplankton biomass and species composition in shipboard cultures. Both copepods and krill may have an impact on phytoplankton species composition and biomass in situ since the rates of phytoplankton cell division were probably artificially increased in shipboard cultures compared to natural conditions, where lower growth rates make phytoplankton more vulnerable to grazing. A similarity between phytoplankton successions in containers and in situ, especially with respect to krill grazing, supports the conclusion that grazing may structure phytoplankton communities in the Scotia-Weddell Sea.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

Ontogenetic, inter-annual and regional variations in diet were investigated for mackerel icefish, Champsocephalus gunnari, in three successive summer seasons around South Georgia. Stomach contents from 2239 C. gunnari (130–560 mm total length) were examined. A bootstrapping technique was used to calculate confidence intervals for an index of relative importance of prey categories (% IRIDC). Diet varied significantly between years and age classes but there was little regional difference in diet. In general, diet was dominated by krill, Euphausia superba and by the amphipod Themisto gaudichaudii. Smaller (younger) fish tended to prey on a higher proportion of T. gaudichaudii and small euphausiids such as Thysanoessa sp. and took smaller quantities of E. superba. In a season of poor krill availability (summer of 2003–2004) the proportion of krill in the diet, stomach fullness and fish condition (indicated by length–weight relationships) were significantly lower than in the other summer seasons. A large reduction (>80%) in the estimated annual (2005) biomass of the C. gunnari stock directly followed the season of poor krill availability. This decline was largely because of mortality of 2+ and 3+ fish, which were more krill dependent than 1+ fish. Younger fish appear to have survived, leading to an increase in the estimated population biomass in 2006.  相似文献

Stomach contents were identified from 206 Antarctic starry skate (Amblyraja georgiana) that were collected during three groundfish surveys (September 2007, April 2008 and January 2009) at South Georgia, Southern Ocean. The diet of A. georgiana varied with skate size and between years. Preferred prey included fish (particularly for larger individuals) and Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, as well as amphipods, polychaetes and other benthic fauna. The skate A. georgiana appears to be an opportunistic predator, and the clear presence of Antarctic krill in this demersal predator’s diet may indicate a benthic habit of this euphausiid species, which has hitherto mainly been considered as occupying a purely pelagic niche.  相似文献

Summary Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba Dana) occurs in enormous swarms in Antarctic waters during the ice-free summer months. The winter whereabouts of this stock were hitherto unknown. Evidence collected during the Winter Weddell Sea Project 1986 (WWSP'86, G. Hempel 1988) covering a large area of the eastern and southern Weddell Sea indicates that the seasonal sea ice cover sustains the bulk of the krill population. Results presented here, show that known aspects of krill morphology and behavior are actually adaptations to the ice habitat, suggesting that the dominance of krill in the Antarctic marine ecosystem is a result of its capacity to grow and reproduce in the water column in summer, and find both food and shelter in the ice cover during the rest of the year. This conclusion has far-reaching implications for our understanding of Southern Ocean biology and ecology.  相似文献
