The question of whether odour experiences have a function inthe cultures of the technically industrialized world was investigatedby interviews with German (166) and Japanese (88) subjects. They were asked to name pleasant and unpleasant odours frommemory and to give associations regarding them. The participantsenumerated 2040 odours and 3520 associations. Although Japanesesubjects in general gave less information than the Germans, the results for both cultures were very similar in quality aswell as quantity. The odour memories included the whole physicaland social environment and the associations showed the far-reachingeffect of odour experiences. Both pleasant and unpleasant odourswere remembered to an equal extent. Most of the odours recalledwere assessed similarly by the subjects, as either pleasantor unpleasant. Obviously, individual likings or aversions aredominated by underlying evaluations common to all subjects ofboth cultures. Uniformly judged odours were, for example, odoursof plants (pleasant) and odours of rotten and decomposed things(unpleasant). It is discussed whether this finding reflectspreprogrammed survival strategies. The few cultural differenceswhich were found seemed to reflect different life habits, normsand values in the two countries.  相似文献

The study investigated the potential for facial electromyography (EMG) to be used as a clinical tool for measuring the responses of children to pleasant and unpleasant smell and taste stimuli. Responses in the zygomaticus major and levator labii muscles to 4 odorants and 4 tastants were recorded from 34 children aged 6-9 years. The results indicated that EMG activities in the 2 muscles discriminated between pleasant and unpleasant stimuli within each modality in a manner that indicated that the children perceived the hedonic qualities of the stimuli in a manner similar to that reported for adults. Importantly, there was unanimous agreement across the children as regards the differential nature of the activities exhibited. These outcomes together with the results of earlier facial expression studies suggest that facial EMG may provide an objective procedure that could be suitable for the clinical assessment of taste and smell function in newborns and young infants.  相似文献

Does hedonic appreciation evolve differently for pleasant odors and unpleasant odors during normal aging? To answer this question we combined psychophysics and electro-encephalographic recordings in young and old adults. A first study showed that pleasant odorants (but not unpleasant ones) were rated as less pleasant by old adults. A second study validated this decrease in hedonic appreciation for agreeable odors and further showed that smelling these odorants decreased beta event-related synchronization in aged participants. In conclusion, the study offers new insights into the evolution of odor hedonic perception during normal aging, highlighting for the first time a change in processing pleasant odors.  相似文献

Evidence on universals in facial expression of emotion and renewed controversy about how to interpret that evidence is discussed. New findings on the capability of voluntary facial action to generate changes in both autonomic and central nervous system activity are presented, as well as a discussion of the possible mechanisms relevant to this phenomenon. Finally, new work on the nature of smiling is reviewed which shows that it is possible to distinguish the smile when enjoyment is occurring from other types of smiling. Implications for the differences between voluntary and involuntary expression are considered.  相似文献

The possible existence of one-sided dominance in the face, similar to the phenomena of handedness and footedness, has been investigated by studying smiling pattern, movements of the angles of mouth, winking, platysma contraction, raising and everting the upper lip with dilatation of the nostril, and vertical wrinkling of the forehead, on 300 right-handed and 30 left-handed persons. The conclusions are as follows: 1. The large majority of persons investigated do not use the two sides of face equally. 2. Facial ambilaterality is a rare feature. 3. There is no clear-cut correlation between handedness and the dominant side of the face. 4. The greater percentage (58.66%) of right-handed persons show a left-sided smile and find it more convenient to perform almost all exercises with the left side of the face. A still greater percentage (73.33%) of left-handed persons shows a right-sided smile and a better performance of all exercises with the right side of the face. The contralateral relationship of handedness to the dominant side of the face is significant in the right-handed and more so, in the left-handed persons.  相似文献

The authors present a multidisciplinary approach to the gingival smile in which its three components are evaluated. These components are the dynamic component of the lip (repose versus smiling) and the two static elements of the gum and maxilla. Once an appropriate diagnosis has been made, the authors act on the gingiva for delayed passive eruption, on the maxilla for long face syndrome, and on the lip with lip-elongation techniques. When delayed passive eruption is associated with hyperfunction of the lip elevators, an intraoral approach with an incision at the level of the upper labial frenulum and dissection from the anterior nasal spine to the anterior maxillary fossae, in addition to gingival remodeling, is recommended to reduce gingival exposure.  相似文献

Even though we often perceive odors while hearing auditory stimuli, surprisingly little is known about auditory-olfactory integration. This study aimed to investigate the influence of auditory cues on ratings of odor intensity and/or pleasantness, with a focus on 2 factors: "congruency" (Experiment 1) and the "halo/horns effect" of auditory pleasantness (Experiment 2). First, in Experiment 1, participants were presented with congruent, incongruent, or neutral sounds before and during the presentation of odor. Participants rated the odors as being more pleasant while listening to a congruent sound than while listening to an incongruent sound. In Experiment 2, participants received pleasant or unpleasant sounds before and during the presentation of either a pleasant or unpleasant odor. The hedonic valence of the sounds transferred to the odors, irrespective of the hedonic tone of the odor itself. The more the participants liked the preceding sound, the more pleasant the subsequent odor became. In contrast, the ratings of odor intensity appeared to be little or not at all influenced by the congruency or hedonic valence of the auditory cue. In conclusion, the present study for the first time provides an empirical demonstration that auditory cues can modulate odor pleasantness.  相似文献

Taste intensity ratings are higher when many low-intensity stimuli are presented than when many high-intensity stimuli are presented. It is investigated whether similar contextual shifts occur for hedonic judgments. Experiment 1 assessed the perceived pleasantness of a heterogeneous stimulus set containing either a large number of quinine (unpleasant context) or sucrose (pleasant context) solutions. In Experiment 2 subjects made hedonic judgments for a set of sucrose solutions. They were classified pre-experimentally as ‘sweet-likers,’‘neutrals,’ or ‘sweet-dislikers.’ Stimulus frequency distributions were positively or negatively skewed. In Experiment 1, hedonic ratings in the pleasant context were lower than those obtained in the unpleasant context. In Experiment 2, no effect of stimulus context was found. It is argued that contextual shifts in hedonic judgments are found only if the stimuli differ substantially along the hedonic dimension. In addition, the subject groups should be homogeneous with regard to preference rank orders, and should be sufficiently large to allow testing with adequate statistical power.  相似文献

Perception, cognition, and emotion do not operate along segregated pathways; rather, their adaptive interaction is supported by various sources of evidence. For instance, the aesthetic appraisal of powerful mood inducers like music can bias the facial expression of emotions towards mood congruency. In four experiments we showed similar mood-congruency effects elicited by the comfort/discomfort of body actions. Using a novel Motor Action Mood Induction Procedure, we let participants perform comfortable/uncomfortable visually-guided reaches and tested them in a facial emotion identification task. Through the alleged mediation of motor action induced mood, action comfort enhanced the quality of the participant’s global experience (a neutral face appeared happy and a slightly angry face neutral), while action discomfort made a neutral face appear angry and a slightly happy face neutral. Furthermore, uncomfortable (but not comfortable) reaching improved the sensitivity for the identification of emotional faces and reduced the identification time of facial expressions, as a possible effect of hyper-arousal from an unpleasant bodily experience.  相似文献

How the pleasantness of chemosensory stimuli such as odorants or intranasal trigeminal compounds is processed in the human brain has been the focus of considerable recent interest. Yet, so far, only the unimodal form of this hedonic processing has been explored, and not its bimodal form during crossmodal integration of olfactory and trigeminal stimuli. The main purpose of the present study was to investigate this question. To this end, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used in an experiment comparing brain activation related to a pleasant and a relatively unpleasant olfacto-trigeminal mixture, and to their individual components (CO(2) alone, Orange alone, Rose alone). Results revealed first common neural activity patterns in response to both mixtures in a number of regions: notably the superior temporal gyrus and the caudate nucleus. Common activations were also observed in the insula, although the pleasant mixture activated the right insula whereas the unpleasant mixture activated the left insula. However, specific activations were observed in anterior cingulate gyrus and the ventral tegmental area only during the perception of the pleasant mixture. These findings emphasized for the firs time the involvement of the latter structures in processing of pleasantness during crossmodal integration of chemosensory stimuli.  相似文献

Darwin proposed that smiles with eye constriction (Duchenne smiles) index strong positive emotion in infants, while cry-faces with eye constriction index strong negative emotion. Research has supported Darwin’s proposal with respect to smiling, but there has been little parallel research on cry-faces (open-mouth expressions with lateral lip stretching). To investigate the possibility that eye constriction indexes the affective intensity of positive and negative emotions, we first conducted the Face-to-Face/Still-Face (FFSF) procedure at 6 months. In the FFSF, three minutes of naturalistic infant-parent play interaction (which elicits more smiles than cry-faces) are followed by two minutes in which the parent holds an unresponsive still-face (which elicits more cry-faces than smiles). Consistent with Darwin’s proposal, eye constriction was associated with stronger smiling and with stronger cry-faces. In addition, the proportion of smiles with eye constriction was higher during the positive-emotion eliciting play episode than during the still-face. In parallel, the proportion of cry-faces with eye constriction was higher during the negative-emotion eliciting still-face than during play. These results are consonant with the hypothesis that eye constriction indexes the affective intensity of both positive and negative facial configurations. A preponderance of eye constriction during cry-faces was observed in a second elicitor of intense negative emotion, vaccination injections, at both 6 and 12 months of age. The results support the existence of a Duchenne distress expression that parallels the more well-known Duchenne smile. This suggests that eye constriction–the Duchenne marker–has a systematic association with early facial expressions of intense negative and positive emotion.  相似文献

We report an experiment designed to investigate whether olfactory cues can influence people's judgments of facial attractiveness. Sixteen female participants judged the attractiveness of a series of male faces presented briefly on a computer monitor using a 9-point visual rating scale. While viewing each face, the participants were simultaneously presented with either clean air or else with 1 of 4 odorants (the odor was varied on a trial-by-trial basis) from a custom-built olfactometer. We included 2 pleasant odors (geranium and a male fragrance) and 2 unpleasant odors (rubber and body odor) as confirmed by pilot testing. The results showed that the participants rated the male faces as being significantly less attractive in the presence of an unpleasant odor than when the faces were presented together with a pleasant odor or with clean air (these conditions did not differ significantly). These results demonstrate the cross-modal influence that unpleasant odors can have on people's judgments of facial attractiveness. Interestingly, this pattern of results was unaffected by whether the odors were body relevant (the body odor and the male fragrance) or not (the rubber and geranium odors).  相似文献

Olfactory discrimination of nicotine-enantiomers by smokers and non-smokers   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
This study reports an investigation of smokers and non-smokersperformed in order to determine differences in the olfactoryperception of the stereoisomers of nicotine; 38 subjects participated(20 smokers, 18 non-smokers). The investigated parameters were:hedonic ratings and intensity estimates, discrimination betweenenantiomers, estimates of detection thresholds and the odorousquality of nicotine enantiomers. Subjects were able to discriminatebetween the two stereoisomers of nicotine. Whereas both groupsreported the R(+) isomere to cause an unpleasant sensation, the S(–) isomere was perceived as pleasant by smokers, but not by non-smokers. The differences in the hedonic ratingsof S(–) nicotine between smokers and non-smokers mightbe due to the smokers' experience of the pharmacological actionof S(–) nicotine, which is the main isomere in cigarettesmoke.  相似文献

The goal of the pilot study was to analyze the characteristics of changes in short EEG segments recorded from 32 sites during perception of musical melodies by healthy subjects depending on logical (recognition) and emotional (pleasant/unpleasant) estimation of the melody. For this purpose, the changes in event-related synchronization/desynchronization and the indices of wavelet synchrony of EEG responses were compared in 31 healthy subjects (18 to 60 years old). It has been shown that melody recognition during logical estimation of music is accompanied by event-related desynchronization in the left frontal-parietal-temporal area. Emotional estimation of a melody is characterized by event-related synchronization in the left frontal-temporal area for pleasant melodies, desynchronization in the temporal area for unpleasant melodies, and desynchronization in the occipital area for melodies inducing no emotional response. The analysis of EEG wavelet synchronization characterizing reactive changes in the interaction between cortical areas shows that the most distinct topographic differences are associated with the type of music processing: logical (familiar/unfamiliar) or emotional (pleasant/unpleasant). The changes in interhemispheric connections between the associative cortical areas (central, frontal, temporal) are greater during emotional estimation, while the changes in inter- and intrahemispheric connections between the projection areas of the acoustic analyzer (temporal area) are greater during logical estimation. It is assumed that the revealed event-related synchronization/desynchronization is most likely to reflect the activation component of musical fragment estimation, whereas wavelet analysis provides insight into the character of musical stimulus processing.  相似文献

Infant emotional expressions, such as distress cries, evoke maternal physiological reactions. Most of which involve accelerated sympathetic nervous activity. Comparatively little is known about effects of positive infant expressions, such as happy smiles, on maternal physiological responses. This study investigated how physiological and psychological maternal states change in response to infants’ emotional expressions. Thirty first-time mothers viewed films of their own 6- to 7-month-old infants’ affective behavior. Each observed a video of a distress cry followed by a video showing one of two expressions (randomly assigned): a happy smiling face (smile condition) or a calm neutral face (neutral condition). Both before and after the session, participants completed a self-report inventory assessing their emotional states. The results of the self-report inventory revealed no effects of exposure to the infant videos. However, the mothers in the smile condition, but not in the neutral condition, showed deceleration of skin conductance. These findings demonstrate that the mothers who observed their infants smiling showed decreased sympathetic activity. We propose that an infant’s positive emotional expression may affect the branch of the maternal stress-response system that modulates the homeostatic balance of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.  相似文献

Two experiments were undertaken to examine whether facial responsesto odors correlate with the hedonic odor evaluation. Experiment1 examined whether subjects (n = 20) spontaneously generatedfacial movements associated with odor evaluation when they aretested in private. To measure facial responses, EMG was recordedover six muscle regions (M. corrugator supercilii, M. procerus,M. nasalis, M. levator, M. orbicularis oculi and M. zygomaticusmajor) using surface electrodes. In experiment 2 the experimentalgroup (n = 10) smelled the odors while they were visually inspectedby the experimenter sitting in front of the test subjects. Thecontrol group (n = 10) performed the same experimental conditionas those subjects participating in experiment 1. Facial EMGover four mimetic muscle regions (M. nasalis, M. levator, M.zygomaticus major, M. orbicularis oculi) was measured whilesubjects smelled different odors. The main findings of thisstudy may be summarized as follows: (i) there was no correlationbetween valence rating and facial EMG responses; (ii) pleasantodors did Dot evoke smiles when subjects smelled the odors inprivate; (iii) in solitude, highly concentrated malodors evokedfacial EMG reactions of those mimetic muscles which are mainlyinvolved in generating a facial display of disgust; (iv) thosesubjects confronted with an audience showed stronger facialreactions over the periocular and cheek region (indicative ofa smile) during the smelling of pleasant odors than those wbosmelled these odors in private; (v) those subjects confrontedwith an audience showed stronger facial reactions over the M.nasalis region (indicative of a display of disgust) during thesmelling of malodors than those who smelled the malodors inprivate. These results were taken as evidence for a more socialcommunicative function of facial displays and strongly mitigatesthe reflexive-hedonic interpretation of facial displays to odorsas supposed by Steiner.  相似文献

Many studies have shown that females smile more than males do in social situations. The present study extends this research by examining a large sample of high school yearbook photographs. In addition to assessing the degree of smiling, ratings were obtained of the following traits for each photograph: hair length, hair colour, masculine-feminine appearance and physical attractiveness. Results reconfirmed earlier research showing that females smile more than males do while they are being photographed. Other findings were that smiling was positively correlated with hair length, femininity and physical attractiveness for females but not for males. When a multivariate analysis was performed, none of these traits predicted smiling in males, and only femininity was significant in predicting smiling in females. Although social learning theories of smiling can account for some of these findings, a recently proposed neurohormonal theory seems to best explain why femininity is related to smiling in females but not in males.  相似文献

This paper reviews some studies related to the ontogeny of olfactorycompetence in humans from the foetal – neonatal to thepubertal period. Psychophysical and hedonk studies of developingolfactory function demonstrate keen detection and discriminationabilities from birth onwards. Although the sensory parametersof infantile olfaction nearly equal those of mature function, developmental processes seemingly act upon the hedonic integrationof odours. From the first post-natal week, infants rely on thisolfactory competence in social contexts: olfactory cues derivedfrom conspecifics' body chemistry are used to differentiatefamiliar from unfamiliar individuals or kin from non-kin. Additionalstudies are needed, however, to demonstrate an early recognitionof olfactory individuality by young infants. The infants' discriminativeperformance in regard to social odours and the incentive valuethey assign to them are progressively specified in close relationshipwith the earliest social experiences. To date, the salienceof olfactory stimulations has been poorly documented in theinfants' normal life. But clinical evidence underlines theirpotential involvement (i) in the earliest infant–motherbonding processes, (ii) in the infant's emotional homeostasisand (iii) in the child's interactional adjustments.  相似文献

The subperiosteal face lift described by Psillakis has been criticized for not showing a more dramatic improvement over conventional brow/face lift procedures. His approach also has a significantly high incidence of nerve injury. This study reports our anatomic findings and surgical modifications, which have permitted a significant improvement in the safety of execution and clinical results using the subperiosteal face lift concept. Pertinent points of applied local anatomy and dissection techniques are as follows: First, we use extensive interconnected subperiosteal dissection that includes the entire zygomatic arch. This allows better repositioning of the deep soft tissues of the entire upper face, most of the midface, and indirectly, key structures of the lower face. Second, the upward pull of the muscles of the cheek and mouth will produce an elevation of the corner of the mouth, affecting positively the smiling mechanism, the oral frowning, and the jowls. Third, the dissection deep to both layers of the temporal fascia decreases the risk of injury to the frontalis nerve. Fourth, the temporal fascia is used as a lifter and anchoring element of the entire cheek-perioral soft tissues as opposed to the periorbital fibrofatty tissues. This will decrease the risk of injuring the frontal and zygomatic branches of the facial nerve. These modifications have been used in 28 patients. Our rate of patient satisfaction has been high, and no complications with regard to nerve injury have been observed. This compares favorably with our initial 60 patients, in whom the Psillakis or Tessier approach was used. In these patients, there was an 11 and 20 percent rate of nerve injury, respectively.  相似文献
