Music and exercise can both affect autonomic nervous system activity. However, the effects of the combination of music and exercise on autonomic activity are poorly understood. Additionally, it remains unknown whether music affects post-exercise orthostatic tolerance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of music on autonomic nervous system activity in orthostatic tolerance after exercise. Twenty-six healthy graduate students participated in four sessions in a random order on four separate days: a sedentary session, a music session, a bicycling session, and a bicycling with music session. Participants were asked to listen to their favorite music and to exercise on a cycle ergometer. We evaluated autonomic nervous system activity before and after each session using frequency analysis of heart rate variability. High frequency power, an index of parasympathetic nervous system activity, was significantly increased in the music session. Heart rate was increased, and high frequency power was decreased, in the bicycling session. There was no significant difference in high frequency power before and after the bicycling with music session, although heart rate was significantly increased. Additionally, both music and exercise did not significantly affect heart rate, systolic blood pressure or also heart rate variability indices in the orthostatic test. These data suggest that music increased parasympathetic activity and attenuated the exercise-induced decrease in parasympathetic activity without altering the orthostatic tolerance after exercise. Therefore, music may be an effective approach for improving post-exercise parasympathetic reactivation, resulting in a faster recovery and a reduction in cardiac stress after exercise.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of recorded harp music as a tool for relaxation for non-human primates is explored in this study. METHODS: Konigsberg Instruments Model T27F-1B cardiovascular telemetry devices were implanted into nine African green monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops). After post-surgical recovery, animals were exposed to recorded harp music. Telemetry data were collected on heart rate, mean blood pressure, respiratory rate, and body temperature for a 30-minute baseline period before music exposure; a 90-minute period of music exposure; and a 90-minute post-exposure period, where no music was played. RESULTS: No statistical differences were noted in heart rate, mean blood pressure, respiratory rate, and body temperature between pre-exposure, exposure, and post-exposure periods. CONCLUSIONS: The lack of response in these African green monkeys may be attributable to their generally calm demeanor in captivity; experiments with a more excitable species such as the rhesus macaque might demonstrate a significant relaxation response to music.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The effect of prolonged strenuous exercise (PSE) on left ventricular (LV) systolic function has not been well studied in younger female triathletes. This study examined LV systolic function prior to, during and immediately following PSE (i.e., 40 km bicycle time trial followed by a 10 km run) in 13 younger (29 PlusMinus; 6 years) female triathletes. METHODS: Two-dimensional echocardiographic images were obtained prior to, at 30-minute intervals during and immediately following PSE. Heart rate, systolic blood pressure, end-diastolic and end-systolic cavity areas were measured at each time point. Echocardiographic and hemodynamic measures were also combined to obtain LV end-systolic wall stress and myocardial contractility (i.e., systolic blood pressure - end-systolic cavity area relation). RESULTS: Subjects exercised at an intensity equivalent to 90 PlusMinus; 3% of maximal heart rate. Heart rate, systolic blood pressure, systolic blood pressure - end-systolic cavity area relation and fractional area change increased while end-diastolic and end-systolic cavity areas decreased during exertion. CONCLUSIONS: PSE is associated with enhanced LV systolic function secondary to an increase in myocardial contractility in younger female triathletes.  相似文献

Endothelin is a vasoconstrictor peptide which has recently been isolated and sequenced from the vascular endothelial cells. It was reported to increase blood pressure in vivo and produce a prolonged contraction with a slow onset in vitro. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether endothelin can lower the portal pressure as another endogenous vasoconstriction peptidevasopressin (AVP) can. Heart rate, systemic blood pressure, portal pressure, and portal vein blood flow were measured. Effects of endothelin on these parameters were compared with those of AVP. Endothelin 10(-10) mol/Kg significantly decreased all of the parameters mentioned. At the higher dose (5 x 10(-10) mol/Kg), however, the portal pressure and blood pressure were increased and portal vein blood flow was unchanged. On the other hand, AVP decreased the portal pressure and portal vein blood flow but elevated the systemic blood pressure. In vitro experiments revealed that endothelin contracted both tail artery and portal vein of rat and vasopressin contracted only tail artery. We concluded that although both are endogenous vasoconstricting peptides, endothelin and AVP affect differently on arterial and venous vascular beds as well as on portal pressure.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the association among electromyographic (EMG) activity, recovery blood flow, and the magnitude of the autonomic adjustments to rhythmic exercise in humans. To accomplish this, 10 healthy subjects (aged 23-37 y) performed rhythmic handgrip exercise for 2 min at 5, 15, 25, 40, and 60% of maximal voluntary force. Heart rate and arterial blood pressure were measured at rest (control), during each level of exercise, and for 2 min following exercise (recovery). The rectified, filtered EMG activity of the exercising forearm was measured continuously during each level of exercise and was used as an index of the level of central command. Post-exercise hyperemia was calculated as the difference between the control and the average recovery (2 min) forearm blood flows (venous occlusion plethysmography) and was examined as a possible index of the stimulus for muscle chemoreflex activation. Heart rate, arterial pressure, forearm EMG activity, and post-exercise hyperemia all increased progressively with increasing exercise intensity. The magnitudes of the increases in heart rate and arterial pressure from control to exercise were directly related to both the level of EMG activity and the degree of post-exercise hyperemia across the five exercise intensities (delta heart rate vs EMG activity: r = 0.99; delta arterial pressure vs EMG activity: r = 0.99; delta heart rate vs hyperemia: r = 0.99; and delta arterial pressure vs hyperemia: r = 0.98; all p less than 0.01). Furthermore, the level of EMG activity was directly related (r = 0.99) to the corresponding degree of hyperemia.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Reptiles change heart rate and blood flow patterns in response to heating and cooling, thereby decreasing the behavioural cost of thermoregulation. We tested the hypothesis that locally produced vasoactive substances, nitric oxide and prostaglandins, mediate the cardiovascular response of reptiles to heat. Heart rate and blood pressure were measured in eight crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) during heating and cooling and while sequentially inhibiting nitric-oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase enzymes. Heart rate and blood pressure were significantly higher during heating than during cooling in all treatments. Power spectral density of heart rate and blood pressure increased significantly during heating and cooling compared to the preceding period of thermal equilibrium. Spectral density of heart rate in the high frequency band (0.19–0.70 Hz) was significantly greater during cooling in the saline treatment compared to when nitric-oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase enzymes were inhibited. Cross spectral analysis showed that changes in blood pressure preceded heart rate changes at low frequencies (<0.1 Hz) only. We conclude that the autonomic nervous system controls heart rate independently from blood pressure at higher frequencies while blood pressure changes determine heart rate at lower frequencies. Nitric oxide and prostaglandins do not control the characteristic heart rate hysteresis response to heat in C. porosus, although nitric oxide was important in buffering blood pressure against changes in heart rate during cooling, and inhibition caused a compensatory decrease in parasympathetic stimulation of the heart.  相似文献

We compared the hemodynamic and respiratory effects, recovery time, and cost of two gas inhalants (isoflurane and sevoflurane) for anesthetic induction and maintenance of beaver (Castor canadensis) during surgery to implant radio transmitters in the peritoneal cavity. Heart rate, respiratory rate, relative hemoglobin saturation with oxygen (SpO2), and body temperature were measured every 5 min for the first 45 min, and arterial blood gas was measured once, 25 min into the anesthetic procedure. Induction for either agent was smooth and rapid. Heart rate and respiratory rate both decreased during the procedure though neither was lower than baseline values reported in the literature for beaver. Relative hemoglobin saturation with oxygen, body temperature, and blood gas variables did not differ between each anesthetic regime. Both inhalants caused slight respiratory acidosis. Recovery time from anesthesia was highly variable (1-178 min) but did not differ statistically between drugs. Sevoflurane costs ($22.30/60 min) were much higher than isoflurane costs ($3.50/60 min). We recommend isoflurane or sevoflurane for anesthetic induction and maintenance of beaver because of the lack of physiologic differences.  相似文献

Systolic blood pressure, heart rate, and blood glucose concentration were measured in the first three days of life in 10 infants born to mothers who had received acebutolol, a cardioselective beta-adrenergic-blocking agent, for hypertension in pregnancy and compared with values in 10 infants whose mothers had received methyldopa. The blood pressure was expressed as a percentage of the expected value. Blood pressure was significantly lower in the infants of the mothers given acebutolol (p less than 0.02, less than 0.01, and less than 0.01 respectively during the three days of observation). Heart rate was also lower, but the significance was only at the 0.05 level. Blood glucose was not significantly different between the two groups. These results suggest that care should be taken in prescribing beta-adrenergic-blocking drugs during pregnancy.  相似文献

A group of 20 healthy volunteers [10 women, 10 men; median age 25 (20–33) years] were examined by means of pulsed wave Doppler echocardiography, blood sample analysis and psychological testing before and after listening to three different examples of music: a waltz by J. Strauss, a modern classic by H. W. Henze, and meditative music by R. Shankar. To assess small haemodynamic changes, mitral flow, which reflects left ventricular diastolic behaviour, was measured by Doppler ultrasound. Heart rate, arterial blood pressure and plasma concentrations of adrenocorticotropic hormone, cortisol, prolactin, adrenaline, noradrenaline, atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) were determined simultaneously. Transmitral flow profile is characterized by early E-wave and late atrial induced A-wave. Velocity-time integrals were measured and the atrial filling fraction was calculated. The mental state was measured by using a psychological score (Zerssen) with low values (minimum 0) for enthusiastic and high values (maximum 56) for depressive patterns. Music by J. Strauss resulted in an increase of atrial filling fraction (AFF; 29% vs 26%;P<0.05) and ANP (63 pg·ml–1 vs 60 pg·ml–1;P<0.05). The mental state was improved (Zerssen: 6.5 vs 11 points;P<0.05). After the music of H. W. Henze prolactin values were lowered (7.7 ng·ml–1 vs 9.1 ng·ml–1;P<0.01). The music of R. Shankar led to a decrease of cortisol concentrations (57 ng·ml–1 vs 65 ng·ml–1;P<0.001), noradrenaline concentrations (209 g·l–1 vs 256 g·l–1;P<0.01) andt-PAantigen concentrations (1.1 ng·ml–1 vs 1.4 ng·ml–1;P<0.05). Heart rate and blood pressure remained unchanged during the whole experiment. We concluded that different types of music induced changes of left ventricular diastolic function and plasma hormone concentrations. After rhythmic music (Strauss) AFF and ANP increased significantly, the mental state being improved. Meditative music (Shankar) lowered plasma cortisol, noradrenaline and t-PA concentrations; the observed increase of early left ventricular filling was not statistically significant. Prolactin concentrations decreased after modern music (Henze). Thus, it would seem to be possible to detect cardiovascular changes following different types of music by Doppler ultrasound and hormone analysis, meditative music having promising therapeutic implications in the treatment of conditions of stress. This paper contains data from J. The relationship between elevated blood pressure and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease risk is well accepted. Both systolic and diastolic hypertension are associated with this risk increase, but systolic blood pressure appears to be a more important determinant of cardiovascular risk than diastolic blood pressure. Subjects for this study are derived from the Framingham Heart Study data set. Each subject had five records of clinical data of which systolic blood pressure, age, height, gender, weight, and hypertension treatment were selected to characterize the phenotype in this analysis. We modeled systolic blood pressure as a function of age using a mixed modeling methodology that enabled us to characterize the phenotype for each individual as the individual's deviation from the population average rate of change in systolic blood pressure for each year of age while controlling for gender, body mass index, and hypertension treatment. Significant (p = 0.00002) evidence for linkage was found between this normalized phenotype and a region on chromosome 1. Similar linkage results were obtained when we estimated the phenotype while excluding values obtained during hypertension treatment. The use of linear mixed models to define phenotypes is a methodology that allows for the adjustment of the main factor by covariates. Future work should be done in the area of combining this phenotype estimation directly with the linkage analysis so that the error in estimating the phenotype can be properly incorporated into the genetic analysis, which, at present, assumes that the phenotype is measured (or estimated) without error.  相似文献

Operant conditioning of diastolic blood pressure elevation was accomplished in six baboons (Papio sp.) by a procedure using food delivery when diastolic pressure was maintained above a prespecified level, and shock delivery when diastolic pressure remained below that level. Data from steady-state performance indicated a rise in diastolic pressure by a median 22 mm Hg when the daily session was begun. Elevated levels of diastolic blood pressure and low shock frequencies were maintained throughout the 12-hour session. The frequency and duration of shifts in diastolic pressure to below criterion level were found to be variable during the first 1–2 hours but were stable throughout the remainder of the session. Heart rate had a phasic temporal pattern over the 12-hour session, characterized for most subjects by a rate increase at session onset followed by a rate decrease. Analysis of individual performance records showed that the blood pressure increases could occur without concomitant elevations in heart rate. This research was supported by grant No. 2R01HL17958-05 from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The response to local cooling was estimated by the cold hand test (5 degrees C for 2 min) and the cold face test (0 degrees C with 66 km.h-1 wind for 2 min). Heart rate, blood pressure, and skin temperature were measured before, during, and after the tests. The increase in blood pressure (cold hand test) and the fall in Tsk (cold face test) were reduced in trained subjects. Similarly older subjects (53-60 yr of age) responded less to a cold hand test than younger subjects aged 20-40. However, the bradycardia caused by the cold face test was more pronounced in the older subjects. The responses to the cold hand and cold face tests were the same for male and female subjects. During the 2 min after the test, blood pressure and heart rate fell below initial values in the female group but not in the male. It is concluded that, besides adaptation to cold, individual factors such as age, sex, and physical fitness also have a relative importance in the responses to local cooling.  相似文献

The response to dynamic exercise was investigated in 21 patients receiving long-term treatment with beta-adrenoceptor antagonists and 22 controls. An electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood pressure were recorded before and after treadmill exercise, and plasma dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) activity was measured as an index of changes in sympathetic activity. Heart rate and blood pressure were lower at rest and throughout exercise in treated patients, although the pressor effect of exercise was not reduced. The ECG P-R interval was lengthened, and in addition the Q-T interval was prolonged. After exercise, plasma DBH activity was significantly increased in controls but not in treated patients. We conclude that long-term administration of beta-adrenergic blockers increases myocardial repolarisation time and reduces sympathetic nervous activity. These actions may contribute to the antiarrhythmic and hypotensive effects of long-term beta-blockade.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to examine whether breathing pattern may be used as a reliable index for the effectiveness of techniques applied for the regulation of mental states. Heart rate (HR), breathing pattern, galvanic skin response (GSR), and electromyogram (EMG) of the frontalis muscle were measured in 39 male and female subjects aged 18–25 years during 10-minute treatment with relaxation technique (autogenic training and/or music) followed by 10 minutes of imagery training. In the first 7 sessions biofeedback (BFB) was not included, while during the last 6 sessions BFB was introduced and utilized by the subjects. Relaxation (music or autogenic training) led to a decrease in breathing frequency, attributed to lengthening of expiration time, as well as reduced HR, GSR, and frontalis EMG response. In most instances imagery training was related to an increase in these indices. Specifically, significant tachypnea was observed during imagery of sprint running. In most cases BFB substantially augmented the physiological responses. In conclusion, our data suggest that, compared with HR, GSR, and EMG responses, the breathing pattern is at least as sensitive to the mental techniques employed, and may be useful as a psychophysiological index for diagnosis and testing, especially in sport practice.  相似文献

Changes in blood flow are a principal mechanism of thermoregulation in vertebrates. Changes in heart rate will alter blood flow, although multiple demands for limited cardiac output may compromise effective thermoregulation. We tested the hypothesis that regional differences in blood flow during heating and cooling can occur independently from changes in heart rate. We measured heart rate and blood pressure concurrently with blood flow in the crocodile, Crocodylus porosus. We measured changes in blood flow by laser Doppler flowmetry, and by injecting coloured microspheres. All measurements were made under different heat loads, with and without blocking cholinergic and β-adrenergic receptors (autonomic blockade). Heart rates were significantly faster during heating than cooling in the control animals, but not when autonomic receptors were blocked. There were no significant differences in blood flow distribution between the control and autonomic blockade treatments. In both treatments, blood flow was directed to the dorsal skin and muscle and away from the tail and duodenum during heating. When the heat source was switched off, there was a redistribution of blood from the dorsal surface to the duodenum. Blood flow to the leg skin and muscle, and to the liver did not change significantly with thermal state. Blood pressure was significantly higher during the autonomic blockade than during the control. Thermal time constants of heating and cooling were unaffected by the blockade of autonomic receptors. We concluded that animals partially compensated for a lack of differential heart rates during heating and cooling by redistributing blood within the body, and by increasing blood pressure to increase flow. Hence, measures of heart rate alone are insufficient to assess physiological thermoregulation in reptiles.  相似文献

The effects of cobalt chloride on heart rate, blood pressure, ventilatory frequency and opercular pressure amplitude in channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus were measured to evaluate the potential of cobalt as a histochemical probe to study mechanisms of oxygen chemoreception, as well as assess the general effects of cobalt on the cardioventilatory physiology of fishes. Cobalt, like cyanide, has been previously used to stimulate oxygen chemoreceptors and hypoxic reflexes in mammals but there is little information on the cardioventilatory effects of cobalt on fish. Catfish were exposed to increasing concentrations (1-20 mg/kg) of cobalt in the water (external) or injections into the dorsal aorta (internal) and the cardioventilatory effects recorded. Mean arterial pressure showed a significant, dose-dependent increase in response to cobalt injections. Heart rate increased slowly, but significantly after cobalt injections but the magnitude of change was not dose-dependent. There was a small increase in ventilatory rate but no effect on amplitude. External cobalt had similar effects but the responses were weaker. Although cobalt stimulated some cardioventilatory reflexes the pattern and magnitude of the responses were noticeably different from those of cyanide and hypoxia. The results suggest that the cardioventilatory reflexes stimulated by cobalt were not mediated by O(2)-sensitive chemoreceptors and that cobalt is not an effective O(2) receptor stimulant in fishes.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of voluntarily empathizing with a musical performer (i.e., cognitive empathy) on music-induced emotions and their underlying physiological activity. N = 56 participants watched video-clips of two operatic compositions performed in concerts, with low or high empathy instructions. Heart rate and heart rate variability, skin conductance level (SCL), and respiration rate (RR) were measured during music listening, and music-induced emotions were quantified using the Geneva Emotional Music Scale immediately after music listening. Listening to the aria with sad content in a high empathy condition facilitated the emotion of nostalgia and decreased SCL, in comparison to the low empathy condition. Listening to the song with happy content in a high empathy condition also facilitated the emotion of power and increased RR, in comparison to the low empathy condition. To our knowledge, this study offers the first experimental evidence that cognitive empathy influences emotion psychophysiology during music listening.  相似文献

The efficacy and safety of pentobarbitone, ketamine/xylazine, fentanyl/fluanisone/diazepam, and halothane/nitrous oxide anaesthesia were compared in 4 groups of six New Zealand White rabbits. Heart and respiratory rates, body temperature, reflexes, blood pressure and blood gases were measured. Pentobarbitone appeared to be unsuitable for anaesthesia in rabbits, as 5 of the 6 rabbits to whom it was administered, required artificial respiration or died. The combinations of ketamine/xylazine and fentanyl-fluanisone/diazepam both produced unpredictable levels of anaesthesia together with a substantial decline in arterial blood pressure and PO2. Despite a severe drop in blood pressure (up to 37.5%), anaesthesia with halothane and nitrous oxide was found to be superior to the other anaesthetic agents.  相似文献
