Peripheral immune responsiveness in male laboratory mice was reduced by infection with the trichostrongyloid nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus. Responsiveness was also lower among high-ranking (aggressive) males regardless of infection status. Reduced responsiveness in both infected animals and high rankers was associated with elevated serum corticosterone concentration (a potential immunodepressant) and was compounded among high-ranking males by subsequent high aggressiveness. As in previous experiments, only low rankers modulated testosterone secretion in relation to current immunocompetence and corticosterone concentration. The lack of any downregulation of aggression in response to parasite-induced immunodepression contrasted with previous results using antithymocyte serum and may be due to the more localized nature of immunodepression during H. polygyrus infection. However, the additional increase in corticosterone concentration resulting from exposure to female odour and destabilized aggressive social relationships did result in downregulation of aggression among high rankers and of testosterone among mice generally, suggesting that modulation rules of thumb are at least partly dependent on the proximate cues associated with immunodepression.  相似文献

Dominance hierarchies play an important role in avoidance and/or solving conflicts in gregarious species. In dabbling ducks (Anas species), dominance allows for feeding‐site monopolization in winter quarters where resources are generally limited. In addition, male social rank should theoretically favour access to mates. Dominance rank can be associated with morphological traits, and is often correlated with aggressiveness, a behavioural trait generally related to high testosterone levels. In this study, we investigated the existence of a winter group structure based on dominance relationships and tested for a linear hierarchy, in three species of captive male dabbling ducks (mallard Anas platyrhynchos, pintail A. acuta and wigeon A. penelope). We then analysed the relationship between dominance ranks, morphological parameters and testosterone levels measured in early (Oct.) and mid‐winter (Dec./Jan.). We found that the three male groups of the three species exhibited a linear hierarchy. Testosterone levels differed during winter and between species. Morphologic measurements, body mass and body condition were not correlated with individual dominance ranks, whereas dominant males had higher testosterone levels than subordinates. The slopes of the relationships were similar between species and winter period, but the y‐intercepts differed between species and between early and mid‐winter phases. The linear hierarchy found in the three species indicates that dominance relationships strongly structure dabbling duck groups in winter. Lack of correlation between rank and morphological characters, but correlation of rank with testosterone levels suggests that social rank is more dependent on behavioural traits such as aggressive behaviour. The differences between species and winter periods are discussed in relation to migration and wintering phenology.  相似文献

In this study we examined hormonal responses of Black-legged Kittiwake (Rissatridactyla) chicks to experimental variations in energy content and nutritional quality (low or high lipid to protein ratio, LPR) of their food. Starting at the age of 10 days, chicks were fed either high or low LPR fish at 30, 50, 70 and 100% of ad libitum energy intake. After 20 days of treatment, chicks were exposed to a standardized acute handling and restraint stress protocol, where a baseline sample was taken immediately after taking a chick from the nest, and three additional blood samples were taken at intervals up to 50 min. Testosterone and corticosterone titres in plasma were measured via radioimmunoassay. We found that baseline testosterone levels were not significantly affected by the experimental treatments. Food-restricted chicks had elevated baseline and acute stress-induced levels of corticosterone compared to chicks fed ad libitum. An elevation of circulating levels of corticosterone in energetically stressed individuals was further magnified by low nutritional quality of food. Baseline and acute stress-induced corticosterone levels of chicks were negatively correlated with their fat reserves. We conclude that the physiological condition of Black-legged Kittiwake chicks can be assessed reliably by measuring circulating levels of corticosterone. We discuss short- and long-term effects of elevated corticosterone secretion in food-stressed nest-bound chicks. Accepted: 13 April 1999  相似文献

Honest signals in sexual selection may be maintained by a variety of mechanisms. Comb size in male red junglefowl, Gallus gallus, a well-known predictor of female mate choice, is mediated by health and condition. Social status has also been shown to mediate comb size. To determine whether hormones related to male dominance behaviour might be related to social status and comb size, we monitored changes in plasma levels of testosterone and corticosterone following manipulation of social status. We removed young adult male junglefowl from their all-male flocks and placed them either in individual cages or in smaller flocks. We measured comb size and other morphological variables, as well as testosterone and corticosterone levels, before and after the manipulation of social status. Males in small flocks showed reduced comb growth, increased corticosterone and decreased testosterone levels compared with individually housed males. Within flocks, comb size was positively related to dominance rank and to testosterone level, although not always significantly. However, dominance rank was unrelated to either corticosterone or testosterone levels. In isolated birds, testosterone level was not related to comb size. Corticosterone level was not related to comb size in either treatment group. Our results are consistent with social mediation of comb size and testosterone and corticosterone levels, but it is unclear whether these hormones contribute to the observed social limitation of comb length.Copyright 2002 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour. Agonistic relationships established among male Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix) in shortterm dyadic encounters of a round-robin tournament were stable and appeared to be maintained by a form of recognition. The aggressive or submissive behaviour displayed by competitors throughout the tournament did not relate to their circulating levels of luteinizing hormone, androstenedione, 5 α-dihydrotestosterone or corticosterone. However, plasma levels of testosterone were correlated with fighting success in the early phases of the tournament, before agonistic associations were defined. Once relationships stabilized, levels of plasma testosterone in winners declined to values comparable with those of the losers and the qualitatively distinct displays observed in winners or losers were no longer correlated with plasma levels of testosterone. In light of other work, these data suggest that androgens, primarily testosterone, influence the aggressiveness of an individual in initial encounters, helping in turn to determine dominance relationships between opponents. Thereafter, other factors such as learned response biases take precedence. The maintenance of stable social relationships appears to be independent of circulating levels of testosterone in adult male Japanese quail.  相似文献

Alloparental care of non‐breeders is the main characteristic of cooperatively breeding species. While many studies have contributed to the understanding of the evolutionary reasons why individuals provide care to young that are not their own offspring, the variables influencing and causing alloparental care are less understood. We tested in African striped mice (Rhabdomys pumilio) whether age, sex, testosterone and corticosterone were correlated with alloparental care of non‐breeding helpers. We studied 11 family groups under controlled conditions in the laboratory, each with two juvenile and two adult helpers, one being male and one being female in each age category. We predicted male helpers to show more alloparental care than female helpers, as males are the dispersing sex and might thus have to pay for staying. We also expected adult helpers to show more alloparental care than juvenile helpers and both corticosterone and testosterone to correlate negatively with alloparental care. We found high levels of alloparental care in non‐breeding striped mice, which spent a significant amount of time in the nest, huddling and licking pups. There was neither a difference between the sexes nor between age categories (although both factors were significant in interaction terms), indicating either low costs and/or high benefits of alloparental care. Mothers showed significantly more care than helpers, and fathers showed similar levels of parental care as mothers but not significantly more than helpers. Although testosterone levels differed significantly between helpers of different age and sex, with adult male helpers showing the highest levels, we did not find any relationships between testosterone and the amount of alloparental care. Corticosterone levels were negatively correlated with alloparental care, and these effects were modulated by the sex and the age of helpers. In females, less alloparental care was shown with increasing corticosterone levels, while in males, the relationship was positive. Also, younger individuals with lower corticosterone levels showed more alloparental care than older individuals with low corticosterone levels. In sum, alloparental care is well developed in male and female non‐breeding helpers of striped mice, both in adult and juvenile helpers, but independently of testosterone, with corticosterone showing an age‐ and sex‐specific relationship with alloparental care.  相似文献

In colonies of the queenless ant Streblognathus peetersi, dominance interactions produce a reproductive hierarchy in which one individual, the alpha, is capable of producing offspring while her subordinates remain infertile. Based on differences between behaviour and cuticular hydrocarbon profiles, the subordinates can be further divided into high and low ranking workers. Although it had been shown previously that alphas treated with a juvenile hormone analog lose their reproductive status, little was known of the endocrinological basis of dominance in this species. To elucidate the underlying endocrinology of these three ranks, we measured the individual in vitro rate of juvenile hormone (JH) production of excised corpora allata, and the ecdysteroid titer of pooled hemolymph samples. Production of JH was highest in low-ranking workers, intermediate in high rankers, and almost undetectable in alphas. Ecdysteroid titers were low for low rankers, but were more than twice as high for both high rankers and alphas. The results support the hypothesis that JH suppresses ovarian function in these queenless ants, and suggest that ecdysteroids may be responsible for stimulating vitellogenin production. The possible role of these hormones as behavioural modulators is also discussed. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

Isolates of Ustilago maydis (D.C.) Cda are known to differ in the degree to which they can parasitise maize and, as no differential reaction occurs between pathogen and host, these differences must be differences in aggressiveness. Inoculation of juvenile maize plants induced morphological changes which provided a means of assessing and distinguishing U. maydis isolates in respect of their aggressiveness. Thus it was possible to carry out a survey of the genetic architecture of aggressiveness in natural populations of the pathogen. The distribution of aggressiveness within a single gall suggested that selection had taken place over a number of generations in favour of genes or gene systems tending to increase aggressiveness. Diallele analyses of isolates from two natural populations revealed that aggressiveness had a low heritability and was determined by genes exhibiting mainly non-allelic interaction. It has been proposed that horizontal resistance in host cultivars would have a more long lasting protective effect against disease. However, the genetic architecture of aggressiveness in U. maydis should enable the pathogen to respond rapidly to changes in host resistance and the skewed distribution found within a single gall tends to support this. Therefore, the use of higher levels of host resistance should rapidly select for higher aggressiveness in the pathogen.  相似文献

The effect of ACTH (100 micrograms/animal/day, i.p.), dexamethasone (75 micrograms/animal/day, s.c.), both for three consecutive days, and adrenalectomy, with or without dexamethasone, maintained according to the group, one, two or three days, on the plasmatic testosterone and corticosterone levels, has been studied in adult male Wistar rats. ACTH and adrenalectomy produced a high decrease in testosterone levels (p less than 0.001 for the three days studied). Dexamethasone produced lower testosterone levels in the first day followed by partial recuperation between the second and the third days of its administration. Dexamethasone produced the effects mentioned for intact animals. The changes in corticosterone levels were according to an adequate response of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal system under these experimental circumstances. ACTH exerts an inhibitory effect on testosterone secretion in the rat, so that such an effect from the data obtained after adrenalectomy and simultaneous dexamethasone injections, does not seems to be mediated either by the presence of adrenals or high corticosterone levels.  相似文献

The original immunocompetence handicap hypothesis (ICHH) suggested that testosterone has a handicapping effect in males by both promoting the development of sexual signals and suppressing immune function. A modified version, the stress-linked ICHH, has recently proposed that testosterone is immunosuppressive indirectly by increasing production of corticosterone. To test both the original and stress-mediated versions of the ICHH, we implanted male zebra finches taken from lines selected for divergent maximum stress-induced levels of corticosterone (high, low and control) with either empty or testosterone-filled implants. Their humoral and cell-mediated immune responses were then assessed by challenge with diphtheria:tetanus vaccine and phytohemagglutinin respectively. We found no effect of the hormone manipulations on either PHA or tetanus antibody responses, but found a significant interaction between titers of both testosterone and corticosterone on diphtheria secondary antibody response; antibody response was greatest in individuals with high levels of both hormones. There was also a significant interactive effect between testosterone treatment group and corticosterone titer on body mass; the body mass of males in the elevated testosterone treatment group decreased with increasing corticosterone titer. These results suggest that, contrary to the assumption of the stress-mediated version of the ICHH, high plasma levels of corticosterone are not immunosuppressive, but are in fact immuno-enhancing in the presence of high levels of plasma testosterone. Equally, the central assumption of the ICHH that testosterone is obligately immunosuppressive is also not supported. The same individuals with the highest levels of both hormones and consequently the most robust antibody response also possessed the lowest body mass.  相似文献

As actinomycetoma is more frequent in males than in females, the possibility that hormones might modify theNocardia brasiliensis growth and the course of experimental actinomycetoma was explored. FiveN. brasiliensis strains were grown on Sabouraud agar containing estradiol, progesterone or testosterone, in 3 different concentrations. Colony diameters were measured weekly for 7 weeks.N. brasiliensis strains were also grown in Sabouraud broth containing hormones. Glucose concentration was measured weekly for 6 weeks. Finally, experimental actinomycetoma was produced in male and female hormone-treated mice. Invasion rate, plantar pad diameter and positive retrocultures were assessed. In vitro experiments showed that progesterone and testosterone inhibitN. brasiliensis growth, manifested by lower colony diameters and greater glucose concentrations. In vivo experiments demonstrated that estradiol limits actinomycetoma development. Progesterone and testosterone induced greater diameters of inoculated plantar pads and greater invasion rates with greater positive culture numbers than estradiol. Results partially explain the resistance of females to actinomycetoma.  相似文献

In some species, more aggressive individuals are more successful in resource competition. High testosterone level is associated with increased activity and aggressive behavior, and this may have a direct effect on metabolic rate and cause an increase in energy expenditure. Here, I examined the influence of exogenously administered testosterone on aggressiveness and body growth in juvenile Psammodromus algirus male lizards. Juvenile males were given testosterone-filled (experimental) or empty (control) implants. Testosterone produced an increase in aggressiveness and activity in the experimental males. However, despite being more aggressive, experimental males did not acquire larger home ranges than control males. Experimental males also experienced a significant reduction in growth rate over the 2-month period following implantation. Experimental males also were in poorer condition at the completion of the experiment, compared to control males. These results suggest that although an elevated testosterone level may have positive effects on aggressiveness and activity, it also may have negative effects manifested as reduced growth rate and body condition. Little is known about the aggressiveness of plant-ants typically living in isolated trees nor about how that aggressiveness varies based on this isolation. Here, we examine intra- and interspecific aggressiveness between workers of two Allomerus species associated with two different myrmecophytes. In both cases, the level of intraspecific aggressiveness is very low whatever the distance separating the tested nests, while interspecific conflicts are always violent. Similar patterns of aggressiveness have been reported in various ant species, but the strictly arboreal life of Allomerus ants associated with the isolation of their adult colonies highlight different ecological conditions that might explain the lack of aggressiveness between conspecifics. Relationship between virulence and aggressiveness was studied in seven Plasmopara halstedii (sunflower downy mildew) pathotypes including five progeny pathotypes of races 300, 304, 314, 704 and 714 arising from two parental pathotypes of races 100 and 710. Aggressiveness criteria including percentage infection, latent period, sporulation density and reduction of hypocotyl length were analysed in one sunflower inbred line showing a high level of quantitative resistance. There were significant differences between P. halstedii pathotypes for all aggressiveness criteria. Pathogenicity of progeny pathotypes as compared with parental ones (relationship between virulence and aggressiveness) seems to be positive, negative or uncorrelated. Hypothesis explaining these cases are discussed.  相似文献

A novel gene, BmP94, encoding 94-kDa protein of Babesia microti was identified by immunoscreening of the cDNA expression library. The full-length of BmP94 was expressed in Escherichia coli (rBmP94), which resulted in insoluble form with low yield, and the truncated hydrophilic C-terminus region of the gene was expressed as a soluble protein (rBmP94/CT) with improved productivity. Antiserum raised against rBmP94/CT recognized the 94-kDa native protein in the parasite extract by Western blot analysis. Next, an ELISA using rBmP94/CT was evaluated for diagnostic use, and it demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity when tested with the sera from mice experimentally infected with B. microti and closely related parasites. Moreover, the immunoprotective property of rBmP94/CT as a subunit vaccine was evaluated in BALB/c mice against a B. microti challenge, but no significant protection was observed. Our data suggest that the immunodominant antigen BmP94 could be a promising candidate for diagnostic use for human babesiosis.  相似文献

Kin recognition is a widespread phenomenon that allows individuals to benefit by enhancing their inclusive fitness, and one of its most common forms is reducing aggressiveness towards relatives. We carried out an experiment with Iberian red deer hinds (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) in order to examine kin biases in dominance behaviour and its consequences on social rank. Three enclosed groups (n = 36, 23 and 21, respectively) were monitored during two lactation seasons and social rank hierarchies were assessed by analysing aggressive interactions matrices with Matman 1.1 software. Aggressive interactions between related hinds was significantly smaller than expected (χ2 = 5.02, df = 1, p = 0.025), not only between mother and daughter but also in second and third kinship degrees. Although rates of aggressiveness were similar to data published relating free‐ranging C. e. scoticus, aggressive interactions with relatives were significantly smaller (χ2 = 39.0, df = 1, p < 0.001). This reduction of aggressiveness between related hinds was not the result of these hinds having a lower social rank: social rank was only related to age and weight, but not to kinship degree, calf sex or calving date. The decrease of aggressiveness towards first‐, second‐ and third‐degree relatives shows a complex kin recognition system in deer. Possible nepotistic roles in lactation include preventing milk thefts by non‐kin and disturbing feeding of unrelated hinds.  相似文献

Populations of bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) in a fragmented forest habitat in north-east Poland showed local differences in helminth infection intensity, morphometric measures and organ weights that were consistent with differences at the same locations two years previously. Although overall intensities of infection were lower than previously, and there were some differences in the relative intensities of individual helminth species, site differences remained significant and were consistent across replicated subsites. In keeping with site differences in helminth infection and adrenal gland weight and asymmetry, voles at site 1 (high intensity infection) had higher circulating concentrations of corticosterone than those at site 2 (low intensity infection). Since males were sampled outside the breeding season, and thus non-scrotal, testosterone levels were low and did not differ between sites. As previously, voles at site 1 also showed greater hind foot asymmetry. Dyadic interactions between males from the same and different sites in the laboratory showed that males from site 1 were significantly less aggressive, especially when confronted with intruder males from site 2. There was no relationship between aggressiveness and intensity of infection overall or at site 1, but a significant negative relationship emerged at site 2. Aggression thus appeared to be downregulated at the higher intensity site independently of individual levels of infection. Terminal corticosterone concentrations were greater at site 1 and lower among residents that initiated more aggression. While corticosterone concentrations rose over the period of testing, they did not correlate with the amount of aggression initiated or received.  相似文献

Aggressiveness variation and its alternation with non-race specific resistance in sunflower were studied in 19 Plasmopara halstedii isolates belonging to several races. Regarding aggressiveness criteria, percentage infection, latent period, sporulation density and dwarfing, on two sunflower inbred lines showing different levels of non-race specific resistance resistance FU and BT, there were significant differences in aggressiveness for P. halstedii isolates. The index of aggressiveness varied between 9.4 and 31.4. The inbred line BT, rather susceptible in the field, showed a higher percentage infection, a higher sporulation density, a shorter latent period and less reduced hypocotyl length than inbred line FU, which showed a greater resistance in the field. Percentage infection on FU was 1.4% less than BT, latent period on BT was 12.4% less than FU, sporulation density on FU was 22.3% less than BT and reduced hypocotyl length on BT was 15.3% less than FU. Consequently, it seems that the criteria as latent period, sporulation density and reduction of hypocotyl length could be used to measure non-race specific resistance in sunflower to P. halstedii under controlled conditions.  相似文献

Animals have to adjust their physiology to seasonal changes, in response to variation in food availability, social tactics and reproduction. I compared basal corticosterone and testosterone levels in free ranging striped mouse from a desert habitat, comparing between the sexes, breeding and philopatric non-breeding individuals, and between the breeding and the non-breeding season. I expected differences between breeders and non-breeders and between seasons with high and low food availability. Basal serum corticosterone was measured from 132 different individuals and serum testosterone from 176 different individuals of free living striped mice. Corticosterone and testosterone levels were independent of age, body weight and not influenced by carrying a transmitter. The levels of corticosterone and testosterone declined by approximately 50% from the breeding to the non-breeding season in breeding females as well as non-breeding males and females. In contrast, breeding males showed much lower corticosterone levels during the breeding season than all other classes, and were the only class that showed an increase of corticosterone from the breeding to the non-breeding season. As a result, breeding males had similar corticosterone levels as other social classes during the non-breeding season. During the breeding season, breeding males had much higher testosterone levels than other classes, which decreased significantly from the breeding to the non-breeding season. My results support the prediction that corticosterone decreases during periods of low food abundance. Variation in the pattern of hormonal secretion in striped mice might assist them to cope with seasonal changes in energy demand in a desert habitat.  相似文献

One hundred and eighty isolates of Rhizoctonia solani AG1‐IA, the causal agent of rice sheath blight, were obtained from six locations in southern China. The genetic structure of R. solani isolates was investigated using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers, and a considerable genetic variation among R. solani isolates was observed. Most of the genetic diversity was distributed within populations, rather than among them. The distribution pattern of the genetic variation of R. solani appears to be the result of high gene flow (Nm) and low‐genetic differentiation among populations. The aggressiveness of R. solani was visually assessed by rice seedlings of five different cultivars in the glasshouse. All isolates tested were found to induce significantly different levels of disease severity, reflecting considerable variation in aggressiveness. The isolates were divided into highly virulent, moderately virulent and weakly virulent groups, and the moderately virulent isolates were dominant in R. solani population. No significant correlation was observed among the genetic similarity, pathogenic aggressiveness and geographical origins of the isolates. Information obtained from this study may be useful for breeding for improved resistance to sheath blight.  相似文献
