Invasion of a Habitat-Forming Seaweed: Effects on Associated Biota   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fucus evanescens is a brown alga of arctic origin that has invaded European coasts. The epiphytic community of F. evanescens in southern Sweden was compared with that of the native Fucus vesiculosus, to examine to what extent an invading seaweed can modify local biodiversity. F. evanescens was much less fouled than F. vesiculosus, supporting both less biomass and fewer species of epiphytes. Multivariate analysis of the most common epiphyte taxa showed that the epiphytic community composition of F. evanescens was not entirely separated from that of F. vesiculosus, but host species contributed significantly to explain the variation in community composition. The biomass of free-living invertebrates was also lower on F. evanescens, although the pattern differed between taxonomic groups. While the biomass of amphipods was lower on F. evanescens, there was no significant difference in biomass of isopods or gastropods between the Fucus species. The good correlation between biomass of epiphytes and free-living animals suggests that the epiphytes play an important role in providing a suitable habitat for many species of free-living epifauna. The study shows that the invasion of F. evanescens affects the environmental conditions for many species associated with the Fucus community but that the direct effect on biodiversity is probably low.  相似文献

The Fucus populations on rocky shores along 300 km of the coastal waters of southeast Sweden in the Baltic proper have been studied since 1984 at a number of fixed sites as part of monitoring programmes. This paper describes changes in distribution and abundance of F. vesiculosus and F. serratus during the period 1984–2001. Sheltered sites showed a consistent temporal and spatial pattern of Fucus spp. distribution over a coastline of 300 kilometres. The depth penetration and abundance of Fucus spp. increased during the 1980s. Around 1990 the development reversed as a consequence of grazing and in 1997 many sites were almost devoid of Fucus spp. Since 1998 both abundance and depth penetration have increased again, possibly as a result of local measures against eutrophication. Exposed sites, on the other hand, lost their Fucus populations at the beginning of the 1990s, and they have not recovered. Extended field studies lead us to deduce that the fixed sites referred to above were representative of the Fucus populations in the area investigated. Major declines, both at sheltered and exposed sites, are attributed to grazing by the isopod Idotea baltica. The populations of I. baltica may have been favoured by the continuing eutrophication of the Baltic, a series of mild winters in the 1990s, and a contemporary decline in some potential predators.  相似文献

Esterase zymograms were obtained following polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis of protein extractsFusarium sambucinum and related species originating from different geographic locations and different matrices. The sites of esterase activity were recorded, and the Rfs were calculated. The data were used for the construction of phenograms by cluster analysis and nonlinear mapping by computerized classification techniques. The fifteen isolates ofF. sambucinum, the eight isolates ofF. torulosum and the six isolates ofF. spec. nov. each had identical profiles, and are therefore electrophoretically distinct species. The isolates ofF. sarcochroum, one ofF. sambucinum sensu lato (BBA 64280) and fifteen isolates ofF. sambucinum were electrophoretically indistinguishable from each other. We assume they are synonymous. The isolate ofF. bactridioides, one ofF. sambucinum sensu lato (BBA 64993) and eight isolates ofF. torulosum had uniform EST patterns, therefore the two species are electrophoretically identical. We assume they are also synonymous. The remaining three isolates ofF. sambucinum sensu lato are somewhat closely related toF. sambucinum isolates on the basis of our investigations.  相似文献

In the Baltic Sea, abiotic factors are often supposed to explain the distribution of the key species Fucus vesiculosus. Still, in many areas, decline of F. vesiculosus has coincided with mass occurrence of the herbivorous isopod Idotea baltica. The aim of this work was to examine whether, how and at what densities I. baltica can affect the distribution of F. vesiculosus in the central Baltic proper. Both large-scale field surveys and a two-week grazing experiment have been performed. In the field survey there was a correlation between density of I. baltica and reduction in depth penetration of F. vesiculosus. At 80 animals per 100 g F. vesiculosus wet weight, the depth penetration of the F. vesiculosus belt was reduced by 2.5 m within a year. In the grazing experiment there was a correlation between density of I. baltica and loss of F. vesiculosus biomass and meristems. In the controls biomass and number of meristems increased by 50%, while at 20 animals per 100 g of F. vesiculosus there was no net growth of F. vesiculosus. Intensity of grazing did not differ between isopod densities of 20, 40 and 60/100 g. At isopod densities of 80 and 100/100 g though, biomass and meristems decreased by 50%, indicating a threshold for the survival of F. vesiculosus in the experiment. At all densities the isopods preferred younger tissue to older. Our results indicate that grazing by Idotea baltica is an important structuring factor in the Baltic Fucus vesiculosus populations.  相似文献

The role of littorinids in structuring communities is discussed. On hard substrates preferential grazing of the dominant algae often enables competitively inferior species to utilize the rock substrate. Investigations of these systems has led to the proposal of a number of factors that should be analyzed in order to assess the effect of herbivores on community structure. Some of these factors have been investigated for Littorina mariae Sacchi & Rastelli. L. mariae is a micro-epiphytic grazer browsing the surface covering of epiphytes off the alga Fucus serratus (L.). The relationship between the host alga, F. serratus, and L. mariae is far more intricate than that between winkles and hard substrates as the alga itself is a dynamic resource. L. mariae is spatially and temporally linked to F. serratus. L. mariae is found almost exclusively on the alga and is positively attracted by extracts of the alga. The life history of the winkle is closely synchronized with that of the alga (the winter decrease of L. mariae populations is associated with the seasonal die-back of the host alga). On analysis of the factors considered important to assess herbivory, and examples of the effects of other epiphytic herbivores on algal success, it is suggested that L. mariae could potentially play an important role in structuring the community of it's host fucoid and that this may influence larger scale community structure. Experimental manipulations are proposed to evaluate these hypotheses.  相似文献

Fusarium Head Blight of small grain cereal is a disease of growing concern in Europe. Along with Microdochium nivale, several species of Fusarium may be associated with the disease, including species that are potentially toxigenic. This paper describes the results of a large scale survey of the variety and frequency of different Fusarium species and M. nivale in France. A total of 749 soft wheat, durum wheat and barley samples were collected and analyzed from 2000 to 2002. The most frequent species isolated were F.graminearum, F. avenaceum and F. poae. The frequency of F. poae seems to have increased while M.nivale and F. culmorum appear less frequent than previously described in France. Other Fusarium species detected in decreasing prevalence were F. tricinctum, F. equiseti, F. acuminatum, F. sambucinum, F.sporotrichioides, F. moniliforme, F. heterosporum, F. subglutinans and F. oxysporum. All the most frequent pathogenic species and also the less pathogenic ones were frequently associated with individual fields. The implications of these associations for the protection of cereals crops and for contamination by mycotoxins are discussed.  相似文献

Morphological and seed protein studies of selected species ofFestuca were performed to elucidate the relationships between species of sect.Ovinae and their affinity with other fescues.Festuca rubra andF. heterophylla (extravaginale group) had higher phenetic affinity with taxa of sect.Scariosae, Montanae andBovinae than with members of their own section. 5 species of the intravaginale group (F. ovina, F. capillata, F. valesiaca, F. sulcata, F. trachyphylla) were fairly uniform and well defined by protein and morphological data. This supports current systematic thinking and does not agree withHackel's (1882) classification of this group.  相似文献

The marine algal species in the Baltic Sea are few due to the low sea water salinity. One of the few species that can be found is Fucus vesiculosus. Even this species is affected by the low salinity and becomes smaller in size in the Baltic. In present work the photosynthesis of F. vesiculosus in the northern Baltic (Bothnian Sea) was compared to the photosynthesis of F. vesiculosus in the Atlantic. Oxygen evolution was measured before and after exposure to 2.3 W of UV-B (280–320 nm) radiation for 5 h, as well as after 48 h recovery in low light. The plants were kept in their own sea water salinity as well as in a changed salinity, this to examine possible correlations between salinity and photosynthesis. The results show a significant higher initial maximal photosynthesis (P max) for Atlantic plants (10.3 nmol O2 g−1 FW s−1) compared to Baltic plants (4.0 nmol O2 g−1 FW s−1). The Baltic plants were found more sensitive to UV-B with a 40–50% decrease of P max as well as a lower degree of recovery (60–70% compared to 75–95% for the Atlantic plants). The higher salinity (35 psu) had a positive effect on the Baltic F. vesiculosus with increased P max as well as increased tolerance to UV-B. The lower salinity (5 psu) had a negative effect on the Atlantic plants with a decreased P max as well as a lower tolerance to UV-B. Pigment content was found higher in Atlantic F. vesiculosus. The pigment content decreased then the Atlantic plants were transferred to 5 psu. The concentration of Chl a as well as the total content of violaxanthin, diadinoxanthin and zeaxanthin in Baltic plants increased when transferred to 35 psu. The Atlantic F. vesiculosus can not survive the low salinity in the northern Baltic (died within 8 weeks). It is likely that a long time acclimation or adaptation to low salinity has taken place for F. vesiculosus in northern Baltic. If this is an ecotypic or genotypic development it is too early to say.  相似文献

Thrips were surveyed in tomato spotted wilt-susceptible crops in five areas across North Carolina. Tomato, pepper, and tobacco plants in commercial fields were sampled and 30 species of thrips were collected over a 3-year period. The most common species overall was Frankliniella tritici (Fitch). The most common thrips species that are known to vector Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV) were F. fusca (Hinds), and F. occidentalis (Pergande). Relatively low numbers of Thrips tabaci Lindeman, another reported vector, were collected. The spatial and temporal occurrence of vectors varied with sampling method, crop species, region of North Carolina, and localized areas within each region. In a laboratory experiment, no difference was detected between the ability of F. fusca and F. occidentalis to acquire and transmit a local isolate of TSWV. Based on vector efficiency and occurrence, F. fusca is considered the most important vector of TSWV in tobacco, whereas both F. fusca and F. occidentalis are important vectors of TSWV in tomato and pepper.  相似文献

Morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses were conducted on 12 strains ofFusarium, deposited in MAFF asF. subglutinans (≡F. moniliforme var.subglutinans≡F. sacchari var.subglutinans) orFusarium sp. because they formed aerial conidia in false heads in the dark. These strains were resolved as three distinct species within theGibberella fujikuroi species complex. A new species,F. fractiflexum, and two species new to Japan,F. circinatum andF. concentricum, are described and illustrated and their morphological features are discussed.Fusarium fractiflexum, isolated from diseased yellow leaf spots ofCymbidium spp., is differentiated from other fusaria based on its yellowish colonies and aerial conidia formed in false heads in the dark and in zigzag-like conidial chains under black light. Japanese strains ofF. circinatum also formed elongate, coiled sterile hyphae. Phialidic aerial conidia with a pointed apex and a wedgeshaped base were found inF. concentricum cultured under black light and represent a new diagnostic character of the species, in addition to colonies with alternating concentric rings when cultured on PDA. Based on DNA sequences of the β-tubulin gene and two other loci, strains ofF. fractiflexum were resolved phylogenetically as members of the Asian clade of theG. fujikuroi species complex. In addition, Japanese strains ofF. circinatum andF. concentricum were phylogenetically identical to the ex-type strains.  相似文献

Significant relationships between the emergence of adult predatory species,Ophyra aenescens (Wiedemann) andMuscina stabulans (Fallen) and prey,Musca domestica L.,Fannia femoralis (Stein) andF. canicularis (L.) existed on 10 poultry ranches in southern California. Predatory species may function in natural control at intervals throughout the year, especially on predominant prey,F. femoralis andF. canicularis. Dipterous species, especiallyO. aenescens andF. femoralis, were only moderately influenced by the surface area of breeding habitat available. Accuracy in the measurement of population trends in Diptere may be enhanced by increasing the number of samples at any given ranch rather than the addition of study ranches. Parasitism, ranging from 22.6–37.8% of collected puparia, involved principally 3 species,Muscidifurax zaraptor Kogan & Legner,M. raptor Girault & Sanders andSpalangia cameroni Perkins.   相似文献

The response of three chydorid species to temperature, pH and food   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The responses of three chydorid species, Chydorus sphaericus(O.F. Müller), Alona affinis (Leydig) and Alonopsis elongata (Sars) to temperature, pH and food type were examined. Egg development time of all species decreased with increasing temperature, although the degree of change was different for each species. C. sphaericus had the fastest development time at all temperatures, and A. elongata the slowest. pH also affected the egg development time of each species differently. A. elongata failed to reproduce at low and medium pH, the egg development time of C. sphaericus was fastest at high pH while that of A. affinis was fastest at low pH. Food type was found to have significant effects on the population growth of individual species. C. sphaericus populations grew equally well in all three food types provided, and grew more than the other two species when fed on an algae culture, and filtered pond water. A. affinisand A. elongata populations grew best when fed on a detritus food source. The responses of each species to the different variables tested are discussed in relation to field observations of their distribution and abundance.  相似文献

Reproductive allocation, the proportion of total dry weight allocated to receptacle tissue and reproductive effort, the proportion of reproductive carbon requirement contributed by receptacle photosynthesis, were measured in two fucoid algal species Fucus serratus and Himanthalia elongata at sites in NE Scotland. Reproductive development takes over ten months in H. elongata, a semelparous (single reproductive event) species, and reproductive allocation at receptacle maturity is over 98%. Following gamete release, the whole thallus dies. In contrast, reproductive development in F. serratus takes four months. Fucus serratus is iteroparous (capable of multiple reproductive events), reproductive allocation is 38.6% for the first reproductive event and 50.5% for the following year's event. In Fucus serratus, the receptacles appear to make a major contribution to their own carbon requirements after the first month of reproductive development. The receptacles of Himanthalia elongata contribute only a small proportion of the receptacle carbon requirements in the first four months of reproductive development, after which the contribution made through receptacle photosynthesis increases.  相似文献

Fopius arisanus (Sonan) and Diachasmimorpha tryoni (Cameron) are two important solitary endoparasitoids of tephritid fruit flies. The former species attacks host eggs while the latter attacks host larvae, and both species emerge as adults from the host puparium. This study investigated intrinsic competition between these two parasitoids, as well as aspects of intraspecific competition within each species in the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). Parasitization by F. arisanus resulted in direct mortality of host eggs and prolonged development of host eggs and larvae. Superparasitism by F. arisanus was uncommon when mean parasitism per host patch was <50%, but increased with rising rates of parasitism. Superparasitism by D. tryoni was more common. In superparasitized hosts, supernumerary individuals of F. arisanus were killed through physiological suppression, while supernumerary larvae of D. tryoni were killed mainly through physical attack. In multiparasitized hosts, dissections showed that 81.6% of D. tryoni eggs in the presence of F. arisanus larvae died within 3 days, indicating physiological inhibition of egg hatch. Rearing results further showed that F. arisanus won almost all competitions against D. tryoni. The ratio of D. tryoni stings to ovipositions was lower in hosts not previously parasitized by F. arisanus than in parasitized hosts, suggesting that D. tryoni can discriminate against parasitized hosts. The mechanism that F. arisanus employs to eliminate D. tryoni is similar to that it uses against all other larval fruit fly parasitoids so far reported. The results are discussed in relation to the competitive superiority of early acting species in fruit fly parasitoids, and to a possible competitive-mediated mechanism underlying host shift by D. tryoni to attack non-target flies following the successful introduction of F. arisanus in Hawaii.  相似文献

Samples from soils planted to millet and sorghum from Lesotho, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe were processed and a total of 3,291Fusarium cultures were recovered. Of these 1,296 cultures were isolated from plant debris and 1,995 cultures were recovered from soil dilutions. The most prevalent species recovered wereF. oxysporum (37%),F. equiset (30%),F. solani (14%),F. moniliforme (6%),F. compactum (5%),F. nygamai (4%), andF. chlamydosporum (2%). OtherFusarium species isolated wereF. merismoides, F. polyphialidicum, F. graminearum, F. subglutinans, F. sambucinum, F. longipes, F. semitectum, F. dimerum, F. lateritium, and a group of cultures designated as population A which resembleF. camptoceras. Fusarium equiseti was the predominant species in soil samples from Nigeria and Zimbabwe, whileF. oxysporum was the predominant species recovered from soil from Lesotho.Contribution No. 1881, Fusarium Research Center, Department of Plant Pathology, The Pennsylvania State University.  相似文献

The introduced Fucus evanescens (hermaphroditic) and the native F. serratus (dioecious) have been in secondary contact along the Danish coast of the Kattegat Sea for 60–100 years and dioecious hybrids have been observed at Blushøj for several years. Hybridization in Fucus is unusual because it appears to always involve a hermaphroditic and a dioecious parental pair. We determined the degree and spatial patterns of introgression for 286 individuals using 10 microsatellite loci and cpDNA. Hybrids accounted for nearly 13% of the population, yet parental species were well differentiated (FST = 0.633). The presence of F. evanescens chloroplasts in 100% of F1 hybrids revealed asymmetrical hybridization. Fucus evanescens cpDNA was observed in 50% of introgressed and 5.4% of pure F. serratus, but no F. serratus cpDNA was found in F. evanescens. In contrast, nuclear DNA introgression was symmetrical with an equal amount (≈1.5%) of genes introgressed into each parental species. Survivorship and viability data suggest selection against hybrids in the hybrid zone.  相似文献

Meteorological parameters inside and outside an open-top chamber (OTC) fumigation facility were recorded and the primary photosynthetic response of four tree species measured with chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence emission. Parameters extracted from the Chl a fluorescence transient were used to calculate photosynthetic activity of the leaves using a performance index. Measurements were made during the night throughout a single growing season. The seasonal primary photosynthetic performance in all species was significantly altered by growth in the OTCs, and the degree of response was dependent upon the species. Wind was an important effectual component of the altered environment. The average temperature was consistently 1.94±0.70 °C higher within the OTCs, whereas wind speed fluctuated substantially more between inside and outside the OTCs (0 to 8 m −1). There was a correlation between the photosynthetic performance index and wind speed in Fagus sylvatica, Fraxinus excelsior, and Prunus serotina. The response to wind was also particular to each species; the photosynthetic performance of F. sylvatica increased with wind speed (1 to 7 m s−1), decreased with F. excelsior (0 to 6.5 m s−1) and P. serotina (0 to 5.5 m s−1). Abies alba, in contrast, was almost insensitive to wind. A model was proposed and tested for the conversion of the photosynthetic performance values collected in OTCs to predict the photosynthetic performance outside OTCs. The wide variety of responses to wind and temperature of the four species conformed to linear functions that describe the relationship of the wind speed and temperature responses with the difference in photosynthetic performance between the OTC and open environments. Specific coefficients for wind and temperature were proposed. The photosynthetic response to wind of each species depends on its ecophysiological specialisation. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Twenty-five samples of maize kernels collected at harvest time from geographically different corn fields in Peru, were examined for the occurrence of toxigenicFusarium species. The most frequently recovered species wereF. subglutinans (48%),F. moniliforme (46%), andF. equiseti (5%). OtherFusarium species isolated (up to 1%) includedF. graminearum, F. acuminatum, F. solani, F. oxysporum, andF. culmorum. Assays ofFusarium culture extracts usingArtemia salina larvae, showedF. subglutinans as one of the most toxigenic species, and its toxicity was mostly correlated to the capability to produce beauvericin (BEA). All eight tested isolates ofF. subglutinans grown on autoclaved corn kernels produced BEA (from 50 to 250 mg/Kg) as well as moniliformin (M) (from 70 to 270 mg/Kg). This is the first report on BEA and M production by maize isolates ofF. subglutinans from South America.  相似文献

The ribosomal DNA repeat units of two closely related species of the genus Fraxinus, F. excelsior and F. oxyphylla, were characterized. The physical maps were constructed from DNA digested with BamHI, EcoRI, EcoRV and SacI, and hybridized with three heterologous probes. The presence or the absence of an EcoRV restriction site in the 18s RNA gene characterizes two ribosomal DNA unit types found in both species and which coexist in all individuals. A third unit type appeared unique to all individuals of F. oxyphylla. It carries an EcoRI site in the intergenic spacer. Each type of unit displayed length variations. The rDNA unit length of F. excelsior and F. oxyphylla was determined with EcoRV restriction. It varied between 11kb and 14.5kb in F. excelsior and between 11.8kb to 13.8kb in F. oxyphylla. Using SacI restriction, at least ten spacer length variants were observed in F. excelsior, for which a detailed analysis was conducted. Each individual carries 2–4 length variants which vary by a 0.3-kb step multiple. This length variation was assigned to the intergenic spacer. By using the entire rDNA unit of flax as probe in combination with EcoRI restriction, each species can be unambiguously discriminated. The species-specific banding pattern was used to compare trees from a zone of sympatry between the two species. In some cases, a conflicting classification was obtained from morphological analysis and the use of the species-specific rDNA polymorphism. Implications for the genetic management of both species are discussed.  相似文献
