The feeding behavior ofDrosophila serido on the yeast communities of necrotic stem tissue ofPilosocereus arrabidae were studied in a sand dune ecosystem of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The prevalence of cactophilic yeasts includingPichia barkeri, Candida sonorensis andGeotrichum sp. in the crops and external surfaces ofD. serido reflected its association with the cactus habitat. The effective number of yeasts vectored on the surface of flies was higher than that in the crops. Also overlap between the yeasts from stems and from crops was partial suggesting selective feeding by the flies in the substrates visited. The females had a higher effective number of yeast species and a lower similarity than males with the yeast community ofP. arrabidae. This was probably related to the search for oviposition sites by females. The presence ofPichia thermotolerans-like andPichia amethionina varpachycereana in the flies, but not inP. arrabidae stems, indicated thatD. serido was not limited to this cactus species. The larvae and adults lived in different patches with the adults feeding in patches with higher yeast species richness. The larvae had a narrower feeding niche and higher overlap withP. arrabidae, and preferredP. barkeri andPichia cactophila as food. Adult flies fed on patches with the most frequent yeasts except forP. cactophila. Pichia caribaea was found in higher frequency in the adult crops than in the stems. Our data suggested that there was food selection and diet partitioning between adult and larval stages ofD. serido.  相似文献

Comparative development of the narrow pinnules of rheophyticOsmunda lancea and of the broad pinnules of a related dryland species,O. japonica, was examined and the origin of rheophytic stenophylly was discussed. The mature leaves and their various parts ofO. lancea are smaller and narrower than those ofO. japonica. The young pinnules ofO. lancea at the initiation of cell expansion are smaller than those ofO. japonica. The growth pattern of the pinnules is fundamentally the same in the two species, but pinnule growth period is shorter inO. lancea than inO. japonica. While the largest growth rate in pinnule length is quite similar, inO. lancea the pinnules are less elongated and much less broadened during ontogeny. Cell expansion in the mesophyll and epidermis proceeds acropetally and toward the margin along the axes of costules and veins. Although the numbers of mesophyll and epidermal cells between two adjacent veinlets are almost the same inO. lancea andO. japonica, during the subsequent growth period inO. lancea, the cells expand to a smaller extent and the veinlets become more narrowly oblique to the costule. This oblique distortion of laminar segments framed by veins causes stenophylly, an allometric modification. The stenophylly ofO. lancea is believed to have arisen by heterochronic evolution, in particular, progenesis.  相似文献

The incidence ofAlternaria spp. on seed samples of cruciferous vegetable crops was surveyed between 1990 and 1992. Some commercial seed lots of crucifers which are commonly grown in Japan were infested withAlternaria species. ThreeAlternaria species were encountered on the seed samples ofBrassica campestris, B. orelacea, andRaphanus sativus. The most frequently detected species wereA. japonica andA. alternata onB. campestris, A. brassicicola onB. oleracea, andA. japonica andA. alternata onR. sativus, respectively.Alternaria brassicae was not detected in this study.Alternaria brassicicola isolates from these crops produced necrotic lesions on all of the crucifer seedlings inoculated, whileA. japonica induced different reactions in different plants or plant parts depending on isolates used in inoculation tests. In contrast, most isolates ofA. alternata could not produce necrotic lesions on foliage leaves of crucifers inoculated, although some of them produced clear lesions only on cotyledons.Alternaria alternata associated with these cruciferous crop seeds was considered to be an oppotunistic parasite of these crops.  相似文献

Morphological changes in the decomposing litter ofAbies spp. andBetula spp. in a mor humus form were studied by a rapid thin section method. According to the morphological characteristics, the epidermis, mesophyll and vascular bundleof Abies needle litter were classified into four types: (i) newly fallen; (ii) slightly decomposed; (iii) moderately decomposed; and (iv) greatly decomposed. The distribution of these tissue types along the profile of the forest floor was then investigated. The morphological changes in other litter types, such as branches, scales andBetula leaves during decomposition were observed directly with microscope and electron microscope. Five vertical thin sections and 80 horizontal thin sections were used for these observations and investigations. the decomposition ofAbies litter was slower than that ofBetula litter. The relative decomposition rate of the tissues was in the order of: mesophyll>vascular bundle >epidermis inAbies needles; mesophyll≥epidermis>vascular bundles inBetula leaves; and inner bark >xylem>outer bark in bothAbies andBetula branches. The last remains of the litter were usually stomata, segments of seminiferous scale and outer bark ofAbies. The decomposition of plant litter occurred mainly within the L and F layers of the soil (0–5 cm in depth).Abies needles andBetula leaves completely disappeared at depths of 0–6 cm and 0–4 cm, respectively. Branches disappeared within the top of 5 cm and 6–8 cm forBetula and forAbies, respectively. The scales ofAbies were most slowly decomposed in the soil layers.  相似文献

Summary A taxonomical revision of3 Fagonia groups, viz. the complexes ofF. arabica, F. bruguieri andF. indica, including the interrelationships between their species, is presented. These complexes are characterized by their compound tri- or reduced unifoliolate leaves. Among the truly simple-leaved species, viz.F. socotrana, F. harpago andF. ovalifolia, the confusion betweenF. socotrana and some other taxa described is considered. The different patterns of the leaf trace of simple and compound tri- to unifoliolate leaves may prove to be of systematic value.  相似文献

Field and morphological observations were made of the young sporophytes of rheophyticOsmunda lancea and its related drylandO. japonica, and the rheophyte's adaptation in the early sporophytic stages was discussed. Mature plants ofO. lancea andO. japonica do not occur in dryland and rheophytic habitats, respectively, but their very young sporophytes rarely grow there. The young sporophytes ofO. lancea differ considerably from those ofO. japonica in having the relatively short petioles with thin-walled epidermal cells, early lamina partition, cuneate leaf- and pinna-base, oblique (not horizontal) lamina disposition, a fine network of spongy tissue in the 4th and older leaves, and dense epicuticular wax deposits on leaf epidermis. They seem to relate to the flexibility of petioles and the toughness and flood-tolerance of blades, and make the young sporophytes adapted to the rheophytic habitat.Osmunda japonica lacking those characteristics disappears from the rheophytic habitat during the early ontogenetic stages.  相似文献

The karyotypes and chromosome associations at meiosis in two types of natural hybrids, 7x and 8x, betweenDuchesnea chrysantha (2x) andD. indica (12x) were investigated. The 7x hybrid had a haploid chromosome set from each parent plant, whereas the 8x hybrid was considered to have a full set ofD. chrysantha and half a set ofD. indica. In the two hybrids, the chromosomes ofD. chrysantha andD. indica conjugated only slightly at meiosis. It is probable that no common genome set between the diploidD. chrysantha and the dodecaploidD. indica exists. The present evidence indicates thatD. chrysantha andD. indica should be considered to be distinct species, although they have sometimes been treated as a single species.  相似文献

Summary The amino acid profiles in seeds of thirteen different species ofOryza, including two cultivated rices,O. glaberrima andO. sativa and the two major geographical racesindica andjaponica were studied using an automatic amino acid analyser to assess differences in the profiles of cultivated species and their wild progenitors. The polygon graphic method was employed to envision the species relationship. Essential amino acid profiles in different species were also compared with those of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) standards. The results suggest a wide range of variability amongOryza species for lysine (up to 4.4% as against 3.5% in cultivated rices) and other essential amino acids. This will be of considerable interest to rice breeders, when after overcoming genetic barriers, the possible utilization of these species in rice breeding becomes feasible.  相似文献

The ecological significance of architectural patterns for saplings ofFagus crenata andFagus japonica co-occurring in a secondary oak forest were evaluated by comparing the size and shape of leaves, trunks and crowns.Fagus japonica saplings were different fromF. crenata saplings in some architectural properties: (i) the leaf area and specific leaf area were larger; (ii) the ratio of sapling height to trunk length was lower, indicating greater leaning of the trunk; and (iii) the projection area of the crown was larger and the leaf area index lower indicating less mutual shading of leaves. These architectural features indicated thatF. japonica saplings were more shade tolerant thanF. crenata andF. crenata saplings were superior toF. japonica for growth in height and could, therefore, utilize sunlight in the upper layer. An erect trunk inF. crenata and a leaning trunk inF. japonica may be important characteristics associated with the regenerations patterns of each species; regeneration from seedlings under canopy gaps in the former and vegetative regeneration by sprouting in the latter.  相似文献

The floristic composition, structure and dynamics of three primaryFagus japonica stands were investigated in the Chichibu Mountains.F. japonica was dominant [RD(%): 64.9–87.0] and showed a slightly inverse J-shaped DBH class distribution in the quadrats [No. of canopy stems (H>20m): 87–138/ha]. The stems ofF. japonica for each size were distributed in the form of colonies, being scattered almost uniformly, and arranged in positive association with each other. Detailed examination of the bases of the stem groups forming colonies revealed that most of them originated from the bases of dead mother stems and that they were from common stools [No. of large stems (H>10 m) per stool: 6–11]. Among six major canopy gaps observed, only one included stems sprouting from the outer part ofF. japonica stools, while all the others were occupied by individuals of species other thanF. japonica. After tree-fall, several undercanopyF. japonica stems remained. Thus canopy gaps in these forest stands recovered through the sprouting of remainingF. japonica stools or by new sprouting ofF. japonica individuals adjacent to the gaps. However, it was considered difficult to fill canopy gaps only with sprouts when the distance between the center of a gap and that of a stool surpasses the crown vector. Such places that are not fully occupied by sprouts will be filled by individuals of other canopy and/or under-canopy species.  相似文献

The multi-stem clump structure of a coastal dwarf forest dominated byLitsea japonica Juss. was investigated in order to clarify the sprouting characteristics and self-maintenance of clumps by stem alternation. The size and age distribution of multi-stem clumps were analyzed using cumulative relative frequency curves.L. japonica had a large number of stems and an even height distribution or young age-biased distribution of stems within a clump. These results indicated the sequential flushing of sprouts at high frequency. Height distribution within a clump ofL. japonica was relatively even compared to other species. This clump structure suggested the stable self-maintenance of individuals in all ranges of size and age without disturbances. It originated specific sprouting characteristics as a response to the severe stress of salty wind.Ardisia sieboldii Miq. had few stems within a clump. Although the stem height distribution of large individuals tended to be even, most clumps had a large size-biased distribution of stem height which indicated simultaneous sprouting. From this structure, sprouts of this species were thought to be of less significance in the stable self-maintenance of individuals thanL. Japonica.  相似文献

The acceptability of three widely distributed Australian Menispermaceae,Tinospora smilacina Benth.,Sarcopetalum harveyanum F. Muell. andStephania japonica (Thunb.) Miers, as food for larvae of the fruitpiercing moth,Othreis fullonia (Clerck), was examined in three laboratory experiments. When larvae were presented with plant species individually total development times were shortest onT. smilacina and longest onS. japonica, despite relatively similar consumption rates within most instars.T. smilacina elicited greater (P<0.05) relative growth rates thanS. japonica in all instars except the 6th. In the second experiment, when larvae were allowed to select from each of the 3 plants, noS. japonica was chosen by 1 st instars and it represented only 3.7% of food consumed by 2nd instars. Significantly moreT. smilacina was eaten in each instar thanS. japonica, and more thanS. harveyanum except in the 2nd and 4th instars. The final experiment examined the abilities of larvae to switch hosts when forced after the 1st and 3rd instars. After the first or second food change largest average headcapsule widths were associated with feeding onT. smilacina as the most recent food. Feeding by final instars onT. smilacina also resulted in the shortest development time and highest puparial weights. While some larvae survived irrespective of plant sequence 83.3% of the recorded mortality occurred while larvae were exposed toS. japonica, principally during the 1st instar. These experiments lend support to field observations which suggest thatT. smilacina is a major host ofO. fullonia whileS. japonica is notS. harveyanum is probably an important alternate host whenT. smilacina is scarce.  相似文献

The univoltine weevilPachycerus cordiger Germar (=P. scabrosus Brullé) completes its life cycle on species of Boraginaceae, it is found from western Europe to the Middle East. In southern France, adultP. cordiger were collected feeding on the leaves ofHeliotropium europaeum L.,Echium vulgare L. andCynoglossum creticum Miller, whereas larvae were found feeding externally on the roots of the three plant species from within an earthen cell. Summary The nature and relative strengths of intra versus interspecific interactions among foraging ladybeetle larvae were studied experimentally by measuring short-term growth rates of predators and reductions in population sizes of prey in laboratory microcosms. In these microcosms, ladybeetle larvae foraged singly or as conspecific or heterospecific pairs, for pea aphids on bean plants over a two-day period. Similarly sized third instar larvae ofHippodamia convergens andH. tredecimpunctata, H. convergens andH. sinuata, andH. convergens andCoccinella septempunctata, were tested in experiments designed to ensure that paired larvae experienced moderate competition. Interspecific competition in these experiments did not differ significantly from intraspecific competition, in that an individual's weight gain did not depend on whether its competitor was heterospecific or conspecific. Furthermore, aphid populations were reduced equally by heterospecific and conspecific pairs. These results suggest that there is little or no difference between intra and interspecific interactions among larvae of these ladybeetles when two similarly sized individuals co-occur on a host plant. Thus, the species diversityper se of assemblages of ladybeetle larvae may have little influence over the short term on the reduction of aphid populations by ladybeetle predation.  相似文献

为了筛选营建云南松抗虫混交林的树种,该研究观察了云南切梢小蠹非寄主植物川滇桤木、缅桂、滇朴、樟树、麻栎和山茶六种阔叶树种叶片不同浓度的水浸提液对云南松种子萌发及幼苗生长的化感作用。结果表明:(1)川滇桤木、滇朴、麻栎和山茶四种阔叶树种叶片的水浸提液对云南松种子萌发和幼苗生长表现出低浓度促进,高浓度抑制效应。(2)在测试浓度范围内,樟树和缅桂叶片水浸提液对云南松种子萌发和幼苗生长存在抑制作用。综上所述,六种阔叶树种对云南松的化感作用敏感性不同,低浓度范围内的川滇桤木、滇朴、麻栎和山茶树叶片水浸提液对云南松生长表现出促进作用,樟树和缅桂叶片水浸提液对云南松生长具有抑制作用。因此,结合营林技术,可选用川滇桤木、滇朴、麻栎等阔叶树种与云南松混交,营建云南松抗虫混交林。  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on Japanese semi-natural grasslands were investigated at three adjacent sites with different vegetation. The predominant grasses at the three sites were 1)Pleioblastus chino, 2)Miscanthus sinensis andArundinella hirta (M. sinensis/A. hirta), and 3)Zoysia japonica, respectively. The degree of colonization was higher inM. sinensis/A. hirta than inP. chino andZ. japonica. AM fungi were recovered by spore extraction and by pot cultures started from soil inoculum or from transplanting of field plants. Total spore number obtained by the spore extraction method was highest in the rhizosphere ofM. sinensis/A. hirta and lowest in that ofP. chino. AGlomus sp. resemblingG. geosporum predominated in association withM. sinensis/A. hirta andP. chino. FromZ. japonica, three species,Acaulospora gerdemannii, Glomus leptotichum, and a species resemblingG. clarum, were isolated by pot culture from soil and two species,A. longula andScutellospora cerradensis, by pot culture from transplanting ofZ. japonica. FromM. sinensis/A. hirta, one species,A. longula, was found by pot culture from soil. FromP. chino, no AM fungus was detected by either method. The community structure of herbivorous animals is frequently regulated by the nutritional condition of their host plant. The present study was aimed at investigating relationship between leaf chemistry traits and assemblages of Lepidoptera larvae in southwestern part of Korea. We selected three sites in rural landscapes and lepidopteran larvae were collected using a beating sheet from May to August. We collected leaves of two major host plants, Eurya japonicaThunb andQuercusserrataThunb and measured water content, nitrogen content, carbon content and area eaten of leaf. During the last four months we collected a total of 481 individuals in more than 25 different plant species. The number of larvae was highest in July and most abundant in Eurya japonica with 253 individuals. Leaf quality varied in each month. The correlation between leaf quality and assemblage of larvae showed that the carbon content only affected the number of larvae (r =?0.833, p < 0.01). Interestingly the water content and area eaten by the larvae was positively correlated (r = 0.835, p < 0.05).  相似文献

Genetic organization of isozyme variation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) was investigated based on 17 polymorphic isozyme loci using a sample of 511 accessions of worldwide origin. The genetic diversity within the species was very high (H=0.36 with 4.82 alleles per locus), as compared with most selfing plant species. Three diversity centers were detected for isozyme variation including South Asia, China and Southeast Asia. The accessions were classified into three well-differentiated cultivar groups corresponding to the indica and japonica subspecies, and a new unnamed group. Variation within the cultivar groups accounted for 80% of the total isozyme variation. Within-country variation accounted for 58% of the total variation while among-region and among-country variation within the cultivar groups accounted for only 14% and 8% of the total variation. Analyses using log-linear models revealed that pronounced non-random associations between and among alleles at many unlinked isozyme loci were organized in a non-hierarchical pattern, and subspecific and macro-geographic differentiation was much more pronounced in multilocus phenotype frequencies than in allelic frequencies at individual loci. These results suggest that selection on multilocus gene complexes was largely responsible for the maintenance of the extensive isozyme variation within the species and the indica-japonica differentiation. Our results further suggest the independent domestication of indica and japonica, the dual origins of the indica rice from China and South Asia (India), and the differentiation of the ecotypes ’javanica’ and the ’temperate japonica’ within the japonica subspecies. Nanocnide zhejiangensis X.F. Jin & Y.F. Lu, a new species of Urticaceae from Zhejiang, east China, is described with illustrations. The new species is morphologically similar to Nanocnide japonica in having staminate inflorescence longer than leaves, but differs by having glabrous stems, petioles, peduncles and abaxial leaf surfaces, glabrous perianth lobes of staminate flowers, dorsally glabrous perianth lobes of pistillate flowers, and acuminate or solitary spinose–setaceous at the apex. Analysis based on ITS, atpF–H, atpB–rbcL and trnL–F sequences also demonstrate that Nanocnide japonica is the closest extant relative to the new species.  相似文献
