Bivalves collected in Vestfold Hills during the 55th Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE, 2009?2010) are represented by five species. Four of them (Laternula elliptica, Thracia meridionalis, Adamussium colbecki, and Philobrya sublaevis) were collected in the sediments that filled the coastal lake terraces during the Holocene; these species are still abundant on the Antarctic shelf at present. Bivalves were found in eight samples, with L. elliptica shells and fragments thereof found in seven of those samples. The sample collected near Deep Lake had the most diverse species composition, as it contained all four species named above. Shells of named species widely occurring in present-day Antarctica were found high above sea level in the marine sediments of the oasis. This indicate to the similarity of the oasis habitats in the past and the recent marine conditions. Fragments of shells of the fifth (now extinct) species Ruthipecten tuftsensis were found in glacial–marine sediments of the Marine Plain dating back to the late Pleistocene. The present study of fossil bivalves from the late Cenozoic marine sediments in Vestfold Hills is the first of its kind in Russia.  相似文献

Sediment samples from several locations in the southern part of the Vestfold Hills have been examined for their foraminiferid content. Those from Early Pliocene sediments of Marine Plain immediately east of Burton Lake contain little foraminiferid evidence of marine deposition. Those from mid-late Holocene sections in and near the lakes contain good open marine faunas of species now known to be living on the continental shelf west of Cape Darnley.Foraminiferid faunas characterized by calcareous forms are most common, the most prevalent dominated by Globocassidulina crassa. The faunas examined contrast markedly with those in the present Prydz Bay which is characterized by agglutinated forms. The results, in relation to planktonic faunas, conflict with an earlier record of a diverse fauna.  相似文献

A shallow, saline lake (Rookery Lake) close to the sea and surrounded by a penguin rookery was investigated during the austral spring and summer of 1996/1997. The proximity to the sea means that the lake is likely to have been formed recently during isostatic uplift. Inputs of carbon and nutrients from the penguin rookery have rendered Rookery Lake eutrophic compared with other brackish and saline lakes in the Vestfold Hills. Chlorophyll a concentration, bacterioplankton, heterotrophic nanoflagellate and phototrophic nanoflagellate abundances were all significantly higher than in other non-enriched lakes. The high productivity created seasonal anoxia during winter and spring below ice cover. The ciliate community resembled the marine community, and was dissimilar to that seen in older saline lakes within the Vestfold Hills. Thus Rookery Lake provides valuable evidence of the impact of natural eutrophication on an Antarctic lake, as well as of the evolution of the typical microbial community which dominates the older lakes of the Vestfold Hills. Physico-chemical data and isotopic studies (utilising H14CO3, H2 18O, 3H2O) suggest that hypersaline meromixis in Ellis Fjord (Vestfold Hills, Antarctica) was initiated during the middle Holocene period, when hypersaline brine, excluded during the annual formation of sea-ice, gravitated in a density current to the bottom. The application of this contemporary information to the genesis of the meromictic lakes found today in the Vestfold Hills, suggest that their meromixis may have developed prior to isolation from the sea. Comparison of physico-chemical data from the meromictic basins of Ellis Fjord with that of the Vestfold Hills saline lake allows some determination of their evolutionary pathways initiated before, during and after isolation from the sea. Further evolution of each lake can be explained through the individual interaction between climate, the catchment size and basin morphology.  相似文献

Analysis of modern surface sediments from fjords in the Vestfold Hills (Antarctica) indicates that 58% of the variation in benthic diatom assemblages can be attributed to changes in environmental parameters with water depth. Attenuation of light through the water column is suggested to account for 45% of the variation, and the decrease in substrate grain size with depth possibly accounts for a further 13%. Cluster analysis and principal component analysis were used to objectively circumscribe five floral zones between the surface and 35 m depth. The depth distribution of the benthic diatoms was then used to interpret the paleodepth of relict fjord (Holocene) sediments exposed around Deep Lake in the Death Valley (Vestfold Hills). Paleodepths measured from the sea-ice bench around Deep Lake combined with data from grain size analysis indicate that the relict fjord sediments have no analogue amongst the modern fjord sediments sampled in the Vestfold Hills. Without a comparable modern habitat on which to model the diatom depth zones, however, this study was unable to accurately determine the paleowater depth at Deep Lake using diatoms. Paleodepth determination will be possible using grain size analysis and diatom data when the substrate and light requirements of benthic diatoms are understood.  相似文献

Maps are presented showing the recorded distribution and species density of terrestrial plants in the Vestfold Hills. The distribution, biomass and species diversity of terrestrial lithic algae, mosses and lichens is influenced positively by availability of meltwater from drift snow and by additional nutrient supply (probably N and P) near bird nest sites. The terrestrial plants are affected negatively by exposure (including sand blast) and salinity. These four factors are probably the most important environmental characteristics exercising local control over plant distribution and abundance within the limits set by temperature.Large changes in salinity, degree of exposure, water supply and nutrient supply occur across the Vestfold Hills, with the most favourable conditions generally occurring in the eastern half fairly close to the ice sheet.Plant distribution and abundance are also discussed in relation to the length of time that particular areas have been exposed as a result of ice retreat. With increasing time of exposure, plant diversity and abundance rise but subsequently fall sharply as conditions become more arid, saline, or both. This temporal sequence can be explained by considering changes in the important factors that control plant growth.  相似文献

The occurrence of the unique autotrophic ciliate Mesodinium rubrum was investigated in a suite of lakes of various salinities situated in the Vestfold Hills oasis, Princess Elizabeth Land (eastern Antarctica). M. rubrum was found to occur in all but the most hypersaline lakes in the survey but was most numerous in the more brackish lakes. Salinity and water column temperature appeared to be the most important factors controlling the occurrence and abundance of this species. Nutrient levels (phosphate and nitrate) did not appear to be important controlling factors, although their influence may have been distorted by the fact that nutrient concentrations were generally higher in the more saline lakes. The widespread occurrence of this species in brackish and saline lakes of the Vestfold Hills provides opportunities to study the ecology and possible physiological and ultrastructural adaptations to living in a high-latitude environment of this ubiquitous and important species in marine microbial food webs.  相似文献

Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems are briefly described, with emphasis on Signy Island in the maritime antarctic region, and the McMurdo oasis, southern Victoria Land, and Vestfold Hills in the continental antarctic region. As the largest and best known coastal ice-free oasis, the Vestfold Hills contain excellent examples of terrestrial sublithic, epilithic, chasmoendolithic, epiphytic and terricolous algal communities, as well as epilithic, endolithic, and epiphytic lichen communities, and moss communities. Many of the numerous lakes support dense communities of aquatic algae.  相似文献

Sixty-six isolates of the moss Sarconeurum glaciale were collected from sites in continental Antarctica at Ross Island, southern Victoria Land and the Vestfold Hills. Genetic variation within and among the populations was estimated using isozymes and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technology. Isozyme results only reproducibly showed variation between the populations with one enzyme; RAPDs indicated significantly higher levels of genetic variability within and among the Vestfold Hills samples than in the Ross Sea region samples. A dendrogram produced from the RAPD bands suggested that the Ross Island and southern Victoria Land samples form one population, and those from the Vestfold Hills form a separate and more variable population, possibly resulting from separate colonisation events on the continent. Heterotrophic flagellates, centrohelid heliozoa and filose amoebae were recorded from cultures derived from water collected at marine and freshwater sites in the Antarctic. Marine samples were collected in the vicinity of Prydz Bay, southeast Antarctica and freshwater samples from Sombre Lake on Signy Island and Crooked and Druzhby Lakes in the Vestfold Hills. Thirty-five species were identified. One new species, Kiitoksia kaloista (Protista incertae sedis), is described. The other species have been previously reported from other geographic locations, providing no evidence for endemism in protozoan species found in Antarctica. Abstract:Thalli of the lichens Buellia frigida and Xanthoria elegans were collected from five different locations each 5–15 km apart in the Vestfold Hills, Princess Elizabeth Land, eastern Antarctica. A further collection was made from Mawson Station, Mac Robertson Land, eastern Antarctica, 660 km away. DNA was extracted from whole thalli and the ribosomal ITS region amplified by PCR using fungal specific primers. Resulting products were sequenced to gain an indication of whether or not variation was present within populations of lichen-forming fungi from continental Antarctica, and therefore of the availability of genetic resources to react to pressures such as climate change. Three genotypes ofB. frigida and two of X. elegans were detected in the Vestfold Hill collections. However, these differed by only one nucleotide position suggesting the presence of relatively little genetic variation, if the ITS region is indicative of the overall genome. Buellia frigida collected from Mawson Station had an identical ITS region sequence to the most common Vestfold Hills genotype, indicating that this species may have a low level of genetic variation across much of eastern Antarctica. In contrast, X. elegans collected from Mawson showed considerable genetic variation from the Vestfolds thalli, differing at 14·2% of nucleotide positions and had an identical ITS region sequence to an isolate from maritime Antarctica 4960 km away. Samples from the Vestfold Hills formed a distinct cluster in a phylogenetic analysis of ITS sequences from a worldwide collection of X. elegans isolates.  相似文献

The focus of this study was the distribution of adult female Weddell seals during winter at the Vestfold Hills. Satellite tracking of Weddell seals had never been done before at this location. Hence, this was a pilot study to evaluate the following methods. We attached satellite transmitters to the lower back, where there was least potential to change the seals’ behaviour or to damage instruments on the ice. Location data were obtained only where the seals hauled out, not necessarily where they were feeding. All locations were within the area of fast-ice that was associated with the Vestfold Hills. There were gaps of up to 30 days in the location data sets. Each instrument (n=3) remained attached and functioning for ca. 6 months. During that time, two of the three seals hauled out within small areas adjacent to, or nearby, open water. The same seals hauled out sporadically. We inferred that these seals foraged offshore whilst returning to fast-ice to rest. If Weddell seals forage beneath dynamic ice but return to stable ice as their preferred resting substrate, then evidence of haulout sites will always be a biased measure of foraging range. Tracking seals in the water may be possible using alternative placement of transmitters. However, there is potential for instruments to interfere with movement (breathing and prey capture). For this reason, we recommend a combination of sensors, diet and tracking haulout sites to research winter foraging.  相似文献

The biodiversity and ecology of Antarctic lakes: models for evolution   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Antarctic lakes are characterised by simplified, truncated food webs. The lakes range from freshwater to hypersaline with a continuum of physical and chemical conditions that offer a natural laboratory in which to study evolution. Molecular studies on Antarctic lake communities are still in their infancy, but there is clear evidence from some taxonomic groups, for example the Cyanobacteria, that there is endemicity. Moreover, many of the bacteria have considerable potential as sources of novel biochemicals such as low temperature enzymes and anti-freeze proteins. Among the eukaryotic organisms survival strategies have evolved, among which dependence on mixotrophy in phytoflagellates and some ciliates is common. There is also some evidence of evolution of new species of flagellate in the marine derived saline lakes of the Vestfold Hills. Recent work on viruses in polar lakes demonstrates high abundance and high rates of infection, implying that they may play an important role in genetic exchange in these extreme environments.  相似文献

Thirteen species of fish have so far been caught in the inshore waters around the Vestfold Hills, including the Rauer Islands, in depths down to approximately 100 m. Species caught depend markedly on the type of fishing gear used, but three species are clearly dominant numerically. Pagothenia bernacchii is most abundant in the shallower (< 20 m deep) weedy and rocky habitats, while Chionodraco hamatus is dominant in the deeper (> 20 m deep) nearshore troughs and further offshore. Pagothenia borchgrevinki occupies the specialized habitat associated with sea ice and close-inshore areas, including fjords and Burton Lake. The species list from the Vestfold Hills area is similar to lists from comparable locations in East Antarctica except for the major difference that C. hamatus has not yet been recorded from such shallow waters at the other locations, while P. bernacchii and P. hansoni are much more abundant in water deeper than 20 m at those sites than at Davis.  相似文献

A fundamental question in ecology is whether microorganisms follow the same patterns as multicellular organisms when it comes to population structure and levels of genetic diversity. Enormous population sizes, predominately asexual reproduction and presumably high dispersal because of small body size could have profound implications on their genetic diversity and population structure. Here, we have analysed the population genetic structure in a lake‐dwelling microbial eukaryote (dinoflagellate) and tested the hypothesis that there is population genetic differentiation among nearby lake subpopulations. This dinoflagellate occurs in the marine‐derived saline lakes of the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica, which are ice‐covered most of the year. Clonal strains were isolated from four different lakes and were genotyped using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). Our results show high genetic differentiation among lake populations despite their close geographic proximity (<9 km). Moreover, genotype diversity was high within populations. Gene flow in this system is clearly limited, either because of physical or biological barriers. Our results discard the null hypothesis that there is free gene flow among protist lake populations. Instead, limnetic protist populations may differentiate genetically, and lakes act as ecological islands even on the microbial scale.  相似文献

The saline lakes of the Vestfold Hills in Antarctica offer a remarkable natural laboratory where the adaptation of planktonic protists to a range of evolving physiochemical conditions can be investigated. This study illustrates how an ancestral marine community has undergone radical simplification leaving a small number of well‐adapted species. Our objective was to investigate the species composition and annual dynamics of dinoflagellate communities in three saline Antarctic lakes. We observed that dinoflagellates occur year‐round despite extremely low PAR during the southern winter, which suggests significant mixotrophic or heterotrophic activity. Only a small number of dominant dinoflagellate species were found in each lake, in contrast to the species‐rich Southern Ocean from which the lake communities are believed to be derived. We verified that the lake species were representatives of the marine polar dinoflagellate community, and not freshwater species. Polarella glacialis Montresor, Procaccini et Stoecker, a bipolar marine species, was for the first time described in a lake habitat and was an important phototrophic component in the higher salinity lakes. In the brackish lakes, we found a new sibling species to the brackish‐water species Scrippsiella hangoei (J. Schiller) J. Larsen, previously observed only in the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

Summary The adult sizes and reproductive capabilities of populations of the cladoceran Daphniopsis studeri Rühe from freshwater and slightly saline lakes in the Vestfold Hills, Princess Elizabeth Land were monitored during December, 1990. The population of Crooked Lake was studied in detail from July 1990–March 1991. Limited samples were also obtained from Heard Island (sub Antarctic). Obligate parthenogenesis involving the production of subitaneous eggs appears to be the case. No males occurred. The overwintering populations of continental Antarctica consist mainly of adult females containing extensive fat reserves. The main reproductive effort occurs in spring. some females produce a smaller second brood during the summer. Reproductive output increases with adult size which is related to the nutrient status of the lake and its productivity. The Heard Island populations have a higher weight to length ratio than the Vestfold populations and have a much greater reproductive output.  相似文献

Survival mechanisms in Antarctic lakes   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
In Antarctic lakes, organisms are confronted by continuous low temperatures as well as a poor light climate and nutrient limitation. Such extreme environments support truncated food webs with no fish, few metazoans and a dominance of microbial plankton. The key to success lies in entering the short Antarctic summer with actively growing populations. In many cases, the most successful organisms continue to function throughout the year. The few crustacean zooplankton remain active in the winter months, surviving on endogenous energy reserves and, in some cases, continuing development. Among the Protozoa, mixotrophy is an important nutritional strategy. In the extreme lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, planktonic cryptophytes are forced to sustain a mixotrophic strategy and cannot survive by photosynthesis alone. The dependence on ingesting bacteria varies seasonally and with depth in the water column. In the Vestfold Hills, Pyramimonas, which dominates the plankton of some of the saline lakes, also resorts to mixotrophy, but does become entirely photosynthetic at mid-summer. Mixotrophic ciliates are also common and the entirely photosynthetic ciliate Mesodinium rubrum has a widespread distribution in the saline lakes of the Vestfold Hills, where it attains high concentrations. Bacteria continue to grow all year, showing cycles that appear to be related to the availability of dissolved organic carbon. In saline lakes, bacteria experience sub-zero temperatures for long periods of the year and have developed biochemical adaptations that include anti-freeze proteins, changes in the concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids in their membranes and suites of low-temperature enzymes.  相似文献

Water samples collected from a range of depths in Ace Lake in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica were analysed for iodine species by a polarographic method. Contrary to thermodynamic prediction, iodide was the predominant species in oxic surface waters. Total dissolved iodine was closely correlated with bacterial density down the water column. This observation and other data are used to postulate a scheme for the biological mediation of iodine distribution in the lake.  相似文献

The invertebrate fauna of many Antarctic ice-free areas, even those close to permanent research stations, can be poorly known. Here we describe some nematodes from freshwater and saline, marine-derived lakes of the Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica. The freshwater lakes contained the widespread East Antarctic endemic species, Plectus frigophilus Kirjanova, 1958. The saline lakes were inhabited by two recently described species, Halomonhystera halophila Andrássy, 2006 and Halomonhystera continentalis Andrássy, 2006, and by a new species described in this report, Hypodontolaimus antarcticus sp. n. Originally marine but now brackish Highway Lake contained a nematode fauna with both freshwater and marine-derived components. The nematode fauna of Antarctica now consists of 54 named species, 22 of which are found in East Antarctica.  相似文献
