The study of sex ratio in larval populations in the urban mosquito Culex pipiens pipiens f. molestus inhabiting underground sites in St. Petersburg was carried out for the first time in 1997–2001, as part of monitoring of local populations of this mosquito in order to estimate its reproductive potential. Samples of the immature stages were regularly collected in the underground breeding places flooded with water with a varying degree of pollution in five city districts (altogether 27 samples, 14 251 larvae). Pupation was observed under laboratory conditions at 20°C for 6–46 days. The sex was determined at the pupal stage. In 19 samples collected in basements of dwelling houses the incidence of males widely varied from 40.2 to 65.6%, and the sex ratio (males: females), from 0.7: 1 to 1.9: 1. Medians defining the percentage of males in the populations in different basements during a certain period (from 3 to 11 months) were 57.5%, 47.0%, and 50.2%. The greatest incidence of males (the median being 62.2%) and sex ratio from 1.1: 1 to 3: 1 was observed in autumn in 1999–2001 in populations inhabiting the sewer pipe. Analysis of all the 27 samples showed that the males constituted on the average 54.5%, i.e., that is the sex ratio was close to the normal value of 1: 1. Such important population characteristics as normal sex ratio at the pupal stage and the high autogeny rate are indicative of high reproductive potential of the urban mosquito in St. Petersburg. The hydrotechnical (mostly drainage of basements) and special mosquito control measures are needed to decrease mosquito abundance and restrict their further dispersal within the city.  相似文献

Studies of spawning water bodies in the city of Moscow have shown that the urban populations of common (Rana temporaria) and moor (R. arvalis) frogs are small compared with suburban populations, and their individuals lead a hidden mode of life. The recorded increase in the fecundity of females from several populations of the city of Moscow may be accompanied by an increase or the preservation of the diameter of eggs as compared with the same indicator for suburban populations. The populations in which the females produced many small eggs died out during the study period. The most prosperous populations are urban populations of brown frogs whose females spawned eggs of various sizes. We consider the formation of these clutches as a manifestation of the bet-hedging strategy compensating for mortality in adverse and unstable environmental conditions.  相似文献

Maturation is one of the most important ontogenetic transitions in an individual’s life. However, the reproductive ecology of the tropical anguillid eel genus Anguilla at the onset of oceanic spawning migration is poorly understood. To understand the reproductive ecology, the fecundity of the tropical eels Anguilla bicolor bicolor, A. bengalensis bengalensis and A. marmorata was examined using advanced migrating silver eels (Stage IV and V). A close linear relationship was found between total length and fecundity in A. bengalensis bengalensis. The fecundities of A. bicolor bicolor (0.55 to 4.96 × 106), A. bengalensis bengalensis (0.33–1.72 × 106) and A. marmorata (0.99 × 106) were within the range of those observed in temperate eels.  相似文献

Many species of the butterfly genus Phengaris are regarded as endangered in many parts of their distribution. Several species are also widely distributed across northern China. Due to land use change and overgrazing, their habitats are declining and many patches have been lost. This paper investigates the distribution and habitats of the Chinese Phengaris species (of the subgenus Maculinea). Shrub-grassland near forests seem the most frequent habitat for Phengaris, while flat open grasslands are mostly over-grazed and thus survival for Phengaris butterflies there seems difficult. Throughout Europe, P. teleius is an endangered species, while there is still no information on its status in China. To improve the knowledge on the population ecology of P. teleius, its population structure, adult behaviour and movement were studied through mark–release–recapture methods in the Qinling Mountains of Taibai County. Eight grassland patches which were potentially suitable were found in the area in 2013. In total, 480 individuals (274 females) were marked, resulting in an overall recapture rate of 16 %. The average daily population size was 44 butterflies (±23 SD) during the adult flight period. Sixty-seven percent of the females and 38 % of the males moved less than 50 m, and 17 % of recaptured females and 38 % of males moved more than 200 m. The mean movement distance was 107 ± 177 m for males and 182 ± 122 m for females. The majority of the recaptures (86 %) were made within the patches, only a few individuals (14 %) moved between patches. Due to human disturbance and destruction, all of the eight potentially suitable patches are becoming smaller and increasingly isolated, thus these populations of P. teleius may face an increasing risk of extinction, which may well be a tip of the iceberg of habitat loss and fragmentation of P. teleius in Taibai County and possibly beyond. Hence we hope our initial study of P. teleius could have positive impacts on the conservation of Phengaris butterflies in China.  相似文献

Traditionally viewed as an Andean grain crop,Chenopodium quinoa Willd. includes domesticated populations that are not Andean, and Andean populations that are not domesticated. Comparative analysis of leaf morphology and allozyme frequencies have demonstrated that Andean populations, both domesticated(quinua) and free-living(ajara), represent an exceptionally homogeneous unit that is well differentiated from allied domesticates of coastal Chile(quingua) and freeliving populations of the Argentine lowlands(C. hircinum). This pattern of relationships indicates that Andean populations represent a monophyletic crop/weed system that has possibly developed through cyclic differentiation (natural vs. human selection) and introgressive hybridization. Relative levels of variation suggest that this complex originated in the southern Andes, possibly from wild types allied withC. hircinum, with subsequent dispersal north to Colombia and south to the Chilean coast. Coastal populations were apparently isolated from post-dispersal differentiation and homogenization that occurred in the Andes. Other data point toward a center of origin in the northern Andes with secondary centers of genetic diversity subsequently developing in the southern Andes and the plains of Argentina. Comparative linkage of South American taxa, all tetraploid, with North American tetraploids of the subsection will eventually clarify this problem. While the possibility of a direct phyletic connection betweenC. quinoa and the Mexican domesticate(C. berlandieri subsp. nuttalliae,) cannot be excluded, available evidence indicates that the latter represents an autonomous lineage that is associated with the basal tetraploid, C. b. subsp.berlandieri, through var.sinuatum, whereas South American taxa show possible affinities to either var. zschackei or var.berlandieri. An extinct domesticate of eastern North America,C. b. subsp.jonesianum, represents either another instance of independent domestication, possibly from subsp. b. var.zschackei, or a northeastern outlier of subsp.nuttalliae.  相似文献

Three oligo-raker species (?19 rakers on the first gill arch) of the genus Melamphaes out of the “M. typhlops” group are considered. The validity of M. indicus Ebeling is restored. This species inhabits equatorial and tropical waters of the Indian Ocean and the western part of the Pacific Ocean. M. eurous sp. n., which is related to M. indicus, is described from equatorial waters of the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean. M. typhlops (Lowe) inhabiting the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean, from the equatorial zone about to 45° N, is redescribed.  相似文献

The analysis of chromosome pairing during meiosis is important for understanding the relationships between different genomes. To evaluate the diversity of chromosome pairing behavior in the wild species of Roegneria sinica var. media Keng with St and H genomes in Triticeae (Poaceae), differences and similarities in the meiotic chromosome pairing behaviors of the two genomes in two populations of R. sinica var. media, were analyzed using genomic in situ hybridization. Chromosome pairing at meiotic metaphase I in the two populations of R. sinica var. media mainly formed bivalents, although several univalents, trivalents and quadrivalents also occurred. Chromosome pairings occurred mainly between homologous chromosomes. However, some non-homologous pairings were observed under natural conditions. No significant differences in karyotype were found between the St and H genomes. Chromosome pairing behaviors differed between and within the two populations. Genetic variation occurred mainly within populations (94.04 %), and variation was more abundant in one population than the other. The genomes St and H differed, but there was some relationship between the two genomes. These findings suggest that homoeologous pairing of chromosomes or exchanges occurred between different genomes of the wild species in Triticeae during evolution. The findings also provide conclusive cytological evidence for genetic variation within the wild species, which forms the basis of their genetic diversity.  相似文献

Molecular markers derived from the complete chloroplast genome can provide effective tools for species identification and phylogenetic resolution. Complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequences of Capsicum species have been reported. We herein report the complete chloroplast genome sequence of Capsicum baccatum var. baccatum, a wild Capsicum species. The total length of the chloroplast genome is 157,145 bp with 37.7 % overall GC content. One pair of inverted repeats, 25,910 bp in length, was separated by a small single-copy region (17,974 bp) and large single-copy region (87,351 bp). This region contains 86 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, 4 rRNA genes, and 11 genes contain one or two introns. Pair-wise alignments of chloroplast genome were performed for genome-wide comparison. Analysis revealed a total of 134 simple sequence repeat (SSR) motifs and 282 insertions or deletions variants in the C. baccatum var. baccatum cp genome. The types and abundances of repeat units in Capsicum species were relatively conserved, and these loci could be used in future studies to investigate and conserve the genetic diversity of the Capsicum species.  相似文献

Formulations from the traditional Indian medicine, Ayurveda, have long been considered to have potent life-style-enhancing effects, possibly by their effect(s) on key life-history attributes. Although several studies have reported beneficial effects of these formulations on different components of life history, few have investigated their concurrent influence on various life-history traits. Here, we report the results of an investigation showing the effect of two well-known Ayurvedic formulations, Guduchi and Madhuyashti, on fecundity and longevity of Drosophila melanogaster. Flies were either grown (i.e., larval exposure) and/or maintained (i.e., adult exposure) on standard food supplemented with 0.5% Guduchi or 0.5% Madhuyashti. It was observed that the longevity of adult flies of both sexes was not affected on feeding Guduchi food, but fecundity of the females was greatly enhanced. Fecundity was also found to be affected by the adult food and whether their mates were grown on Guduchi or normal food. Madhuyashti, on the other hand, significantly reduced mean longevity and had a stimulatory effect on female fecundity. This fecundity enhancing effect however seemed to be mediated through its effect on the males. Interestingly, much of these effects interacted with age in a complex way, making it difficult to generalize the overall effect of these formulations on the reproductive output of the flies. Our study underlines the importance of evaluating the interacting effects of these (and similar) formulations on a range of life-history traits in a holistic way to understand their utility better.  相似文献

In this article, we compared the resistance of two introduced populations of Elodea nuttallii and Elodea canadensis to two different herbivores. Samples were collected from the River Rhine and River Rhône in eastern France. The two populations of E. nuttallii differed in their introduction history, whereas E. canadensis was introduced at the same time in the two sites. The Daily Food Consumption (DFC) rates of the two macrophyte populations were evaluated in no-choice experiments using the scraper Lymnaea stagnalis and the shredder Gammarus roeseli. At the same time, we assessed four plant traits: dry matter content (DMC), total nitrogen content, carbon/nitrogen ratio and total phenolic content. The two populations of E. canadensis were consumed at low levels by both the herbivores. L. stagnalis showed a higher DFC on the Rhône population of E. nuttallii than on the Rhine population. No significant difference between the two populations was established with G. roeseli, but the level of DFC was high. This result demonstrates that the assessment of plant palatability should be carried out with several generalist herbivores belonging to various feeding groups (e.g. scrapers or shredders). Although the Rhône population of E. nuttallii had higher levels of phenols than the other populations, it was consistently consumed in greater quantities than E. canadensis. Neither the phenolic contents were not effective against these herbivores, nor the levels of phenolics too low to induce an efficient resistance. The higher DMC and the lower DFC of the two populations of E. canadensis suggest that this introduced plant has co-evolved with indigenous enemies in the introduced range.  相似文献

The endosymbiotic α-proteobacteria Wolbachia is widely spread among arthropods and Filariidae nematodes. This bacterium is transmitted vertically via a transovarian route. Wolbachia is a cause of several reproductive abnormalities in the host species. We analyzed the isofemale lines created using flies collected from Drosophila melanogaster natural populations for infection with the endosymbiont Wolbachia. Wolbachia were genotyped according to five variable markers: the presence of insertion sequence IS5 in two loci, the copy number of two minisatellite repeats, and an inversion. Overall, 665 isofemale lines isolated from the populations of D. melanogaster from Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Caucasus, Central Asia, Ural, Udmurtia, Altai, West and East Siberia, and Far East in 1974 through 2005 were used in the work. The samples from Ukrainian, Altaian, and Middle Asian populations were largest. The infection rate of D. melanogaster populations from Middle Asia, Altaian, and Eastern Europe (Ukraine, Moldavia, and Belarus) with Wolbachia amounted to 64, 56, and 39%, respectively. The D. melanogaster population from the Caucasus displayed heterogeneity in the genotypes of this cytoplasmic infection. The Wolbachia genotype wMel, detected in all the populations studied, was the most abundant. The genotype wMelCS2 was always present in the populations from Middle Asia and Altai and was among the rare variants in the D. melanogaster populations from the Eastern Europe. Single instances of the Wolbachia genotype wMelCS occurred in a few flies from the Central Asian and Altai populations, but was not found this genotype in the other regions.  相似文献

A search for the genes interacting with the Merlin tumor suppressor gene revealed a Merlin-porcupine interaction during wing morphogenesis. Ectopic expression of the porcupine gene in the wing imaginal disk reduced the adult wing, while addition of an UAS construct with a full-length or truncated copy of the Merlin gene partly restored the wing phenotype. The highest restoration level was observed upon adding the fragments coding for the C end of the Merlin protein. In addition, the porcupine gene was shown to mediate the wingless gene autoregulation, which occurs at two ontogenetic stages, segmentation during embryo development and determination of the wg expression band at the boundary between the dorsal and ventral compartments of the wing imaginal disk.  相似文献

The factors that control lichen distribution in Antarctica are still not well understood, and in this investigation we focused on the distribution, local and continental, and gas exchange of a species pair, closely related lichens with differing reproductive strategies, Usnea aurantiaco-atra (fertile) and Usnea antarctica (sterile, sorediate). The local distributions of these species were recorded along an altitudinal gradient of nearly 300 m at South Bay, Livingston Island, and microclimate was also recorded over 1 year. The photosynthetic responses to temperature, light and thallus water content were determined under controlled conditions in the laboratory. The species were almost identical in their photosynthetic profiles. Locally, on Livingston Island, U. antarctica was confined to low altitude sites which were warmer and drier, whilst U. aurantiaco-atra was present at all altitudes. This contrasts with its distribution across Antarctica where U. antarctica grows 9° latitude further south than U. aurantiaco-atra. Temperature appears not to be the main controller of distribution in these species, but dryness of habitat, which will influence length of activity periods, may be important.  相似文献

Variation of eye-spots in the wing pattern of Coenonympha pamphilus (Linnaeus, 1758) was studied in the Urals with adjacent territories and in Dzhelal-Abad Province of Kyrgyzstan. Discriminant analysis of the wing length and eye-spot diameter and the phenetic distances calculated by the Hartman’s method revealed clinal variation of the characters. The butterflies in the northern parts of the range (Sverdlovsk and Kurgan Provinces) are smaller than those in the south (Orenburg and Chelyabinsk Provinces) and have fewer eye-spots which themselves are smaller. The Kyrgyzstan specimens differ significantly from the Ural ones (the nominotypical subspecies) in both quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the wing pattern, and should probably be assigned to the subspecies C. pamphilus marginata Heyne, 1894. As in most Satyridae, females of C. pamphilus are larger than males and on the average possess more eye-spots on the wings. The degree of phenotypic variation in natural populations was studied using the method of variation spectra (Kovalenko, 1996a, 1996b, 2007, etc.). The arrangement of phenotypic combinations within the theoretical spectrum (St) matrix allows one to describe the actual (Sr) and potential (Sp) spectra for either sex and for the species as a whole. The actual spectrum was found to be considerably broader in males than in females. With minor variations, Sr and Sp showed the same general trends in different samples of both sexes. In all the samples, phenetic combinations with one spot on the fore wing (in cell M 1-M 2) were predominant. The hind wing had either no spots (which was typical of males, especially in the northern parts of the range) or the maximum possible number, six (mostly in females, more often in the southern parts of the range). The phenetic combinations with the maximum (4) number of spots on the fore wing and the minimum number (0) on the hind wing are prohibited for C. pamphilus.  相似文献

Nontranscribed spacers (NTS) of 5S rDNA are often polymorphic in closely related species and even in the same genome. The polymorphism of 5S rDNA NTS was shown between genomes St, J, and V of Triticeae species Thinopyrum bessarabicum, Pseudoroegneria spicata, and Dasypyrum villosum, respectively. A molecular genetic marker was designed based on the 5S rDNA NTS polymorphism that allows identification of the St, J, and V genomes. We designed a pair of primers that correspond to the conserved regions of 5S rDNA NTS between the genomes studied. The PCR amplicon length is 158 bp, 171 bp, and 172 bp for V, St, and J genomes, respectively. The fragment of the St genome is characterized by the SmiM I restriction site that enables its differentiation from the J genome fragment that lacks this site. The developed marker showed its efficiency for verification of germplasm accessions and the study of allopolyploids.  相似文献

We studied a set of Drosophila melanogaster strains that could be potentially suitable for testing a variety of mutagenic factors. Their genomes contained insertions of the enhancer trap P {lacW}-in which the activity of the LacZ reporter is under the control of the reparation genes’ regulatory region. We demonstrated that the beta-galactosidase reporter, which is encoded by insertion of P {lacW} element in the gene mus209, is induced by irradiation in the cells of the salivary glands and wing imaginal discs. Despite the fact that the reporting coloration is not associated with the dose of radiation treatment, we found that the induction threshold of the reporter is different for these tissues. Thus, coloration in salivary glands is detectable after the dose of 200 rad and above, whereas the imaginal discs get colored with 500 rads and above. Thereby, multiple thresholds for induction of the reporter in the various tissues allow approximating the received dose.  相似文献

The effect of five constant temperatures (16, 20, 24, 28 and 32 °C) on the development, survival and reproduction of Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Boisduval) [=?Tetranychus urticae Koch (red form)] fed on cassava leaves was examined in the laboratory at 85% relative humidity. Development time of various immature stages decreased with increasing temperature, with total egg-to-adult development time varying from 27.7 to 6.7 days. The lower thermal threshold for development was 10.8 °C and the thermal constant from egg to adult was 142.4 degree-days. Pre- and post-oviposition period and female longevity all decreased as temperature increased. The longest oviposition period was observed at 20 °C with 20.4 days. Under different temperatures, mated females laid, on average, 1.0, 2.9, 4.7, 4.7 and 4.9 eggs per day, respectively. The maximum fecundity (81.5 eggs per female) was at 28 °C and the intrinsic rate of increase (r m ) was highest (0.25) at 32 °C. The results of this study indicate that T. cinnabarinus population could increase rapidly when cassava leaves serve as a food source. At the appropriate temperature T. cinnabarinus could seriously threaten growth of cassava.  相似文献

In the Danish region of Kværkeby, a mutation in an, as yet, unknown single autosomal gene has resulted in a dominant resistance (R-) allele in the flea beetle Phyllotreta nemorum L. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Alticinae). It enables the beetle to overcome the defences of Barbarea vulgaris ssp. arcuata (Opiz.) Simkovics G-type (Brassicaceae) and use it as a host plant. In this study, we investigated the pleiotropic effects associated with the presence of this particular R-allele in female P. nemorum. These females had the R-allele backcrossed into the genetic background of non-resistant beetles. The effects were investigated under both favourable and stressful conditions (cold shock). The presence of the R-allele in a non-resistant genetic background caused a very high mortality in resistant individuals during the early stages of development under both conditions, but it did not affect the adult life-history traits longevity, body size and fecundity, under both conditions. Regardless of temperature treatment, resistant females in general were found to lay significantly more eggs. Developmental stability, as measured by tibia length fluctuating asymmetry, was not correlated with overall developmental stress in this study.  相似文献

Sphex ingens is one of 30 species in the family Sphecidae that occur in the state of Rio de Janeiro. However, details of the behavior and sexual selection of natural populations of this wasp species have only recently been unveiled. In addition, the knowledge of its ecology is still poor. This is the first study on the feeding behavior interactions between S. ingens and prey captured to feed its larvae. Paralyzed prey were collected manually at the sites of wasp nests on Aventureiro Beach, Ilha Grande, Brazil during the provisioning activity of marked female S. ingens. All prey were preserved, their sex and sexual maturity were determined, and they were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. The body mass and size of the prey and female wasps were measured. Sphex ingens females captured only Pleminia vicina and Meroncidius sp. The body masses of wasps and katydids were positively correlated. The body mass of captured katydids was significantly dependent on the wasp’s wing length. Most of the prey were adult females, but the differences did not confirm possible preferences, as those values can be related to differences in the distribution and fluctuation in the population density of prey species and to the individual foraging strategies of female wasps. However, the predisposition to predatory specialization exhibited by S. ingens populations in Ilha Grande and elsewhere suggests that this interaction can be an important source of mortality for populations of pseudophylline katydid species.  相似文献
