Lake‐margin deposits of the Late Triassic Passaic Formation, Douglassville, Pennsylvania, have yielded a moderate variety of trace fossils. The greatest diversity and abundance of trace fossils occurs on the sole of a thin gray claystone overlain and underlain by gray siltstones. Specimens of Cochlichnus anguineus, Helminthoidichnites tenuis, Helminthopsis hieroglyphica, Treptichnus pollardi, and paired trails reflect simple, unspecialized, horizontal grazing as well as feeding traces under very shallow water lacustrine conditions. The lack of commonly associated Scoyenia burrows in these deposits may possibly be related to the degree of maturation of the organic debris available. The traces, as well as a lack of meniscate burrows, compare favorably to the Mermia ichnofacies, except Passaic deposits exhibit evidence of subaerial exposure. This unit most likely records a lacustrine expansion whereby grazing trails were emplaced under fully subaqueous conditions. Subsequent shallowing and desiccation, followed by sediment influx during rainstorms, favored preservation of these traces.

In contrast, the Scoyenia ichnofacies consists of feeding burrows of Scoyenia gracilis and Spongeliomorpha milfordensis within reddish brown siltstones and mud‐stones (redbed sequence). The Scoyenia ichnofacies records limited exploitation, by opportunistic infaunal deposit feeders, of lake‐margin nutrients carried in during occasional rainstorms that punctuated otherwise extended periods of aridity.  相似文献

Lakes Baikal, Malawi and Tanganyika are the world's three largest rift valley lakes and are the classic modern examples of lacustrine rift basins. All the rift lakes are segmented into half-graben basins, and seismic reflection datasets reveal how this segmentation controls the filling of the rift basins through time. In the early stages of rifting, basins are fed primarily by flexural margin and axial margin drainage systems. At the climax of syn-rift sedimentation, however, when the basins are deeply subsided, almost all the margins are walled off by rift shoulder uplifts, and sediment flux into the basins is concentrated at accommodation zone and axial margin river deltas. Flexural margin unconformities are commonplace in the tropical lakes but less so in high-latitude Lake Baikal. Lake levels are extremely dynamic in the tropical lakes and in low-latitude systems in general because of the predominance of evaporation in the hydrologic cycle in those systems. Evaporation is minimized in relation to inflow in the high-latitude Lake Baikal and in most high-latitude systems, and consequently, major sequence boundaries tend to be tectonically controlled in that type of system. The acoustic stratigraphies of the tropical lakes are dominated by high-frequency and high-amplitude lake level shifts, whereas in high-latitude Lake Baikal, stratigraphic cycles are dominated by tectonism and sediment-supply variations.  相似文献

The Miocene Bicorb Basin is a small elongated basin developed by normal faulting of a thick Jurassic–Cretaceous carbonate succession and subsequent diapirism of Upper Triassic mudstones and evaporites. The basin fill comprises a sequence over 650 m thick formed by two units. The lower, alluvial unit consists of a complex alternation of conglomerates, sandstones, mudstones, and minor lacustrine limestones. The upper unit comprises marginal alluvial and lacustrine deposits in which seven lacustrine facies associations have been distinguished. The inner lacustrine deposits comprise mudstones and carbonates with minor evaporitic deposits. At the northeast and southwest basin edges, alluvial inputs led to the development of delta and fan-delta environments where sandstone and conglomerate deposits dominate. The latter stages of the lake evolution are represented by an expansive thick limestone sequence which close to the NW fault-bounded margin pass laterally to breccias. The hierarchical arrangement of the upper unit shows five different orders of sequences. The first-order sequence defines a major vertical trend of lake expansion whereas three second-order sequences are linked to major flooding-expansion episodes. All these sequences are related to the tectonic evolution of the diapir. Metre-scale, third- and fourth-order sequences and fifth-order sequences, which consist of finely laminated rhythmite deposits probably record climatically forced processes. The diapir–graben system evolution and the climatic variations have exerted major controls on the sequential arrangement and evolution of the lacustrine system. Both factors have also strongly influenced the changes in the gastropod assemblages.  相似文献

Recognition of evaporite formations from continental Tertiary basins of Spain provides evidence that trace fossils (including rhizoliths) can be abundant in some saline lake systems and their study helps in palaeoenvironmental interpretation of ancient continental evaporite sequences. Six main types of trace fossils have been distinguished and include: (1) networks of small rhizoliths; (2) large rhizoliths; (3) tangle-patterned small burrows; (4) isolated large burrows; (5) L-shaped traces; and (6) vertebrate tracks. Rhizoliths were related to both marginal areas of hypersaline lakes and lakes of moderately high saline waters. In these settings, pedoturbation resulted from colonization by grasses and bushes of distinct lake subenvironments. The activity of burrowing invertebrate faunas was especially intense in lakes of moderately concentrated brines from which gypsum was the main evaporite mineral deposited. A specific gypsum lithofacies (‘bioturbated gypsum deposits') forming thick, massive beds has a widespread occurrence in many of the basins. Tangle-patterned small burrows and minor isolated large burrows constitute the typical trace fossil types within the gypsum. The traces are interpreted as having been caused by burrowing insect larvae, probably chironomids, coleopterans and annelids. The behaviour of these organisms in recent lake environments yields information about the salinity range of lake waters from which gypsum precipitated. Concentration values averaging 100–150 g/l may be thus deduced though some organisms involved in the formation of the traces can tolerate higher salinities. The combined analysis of lithofacies and trace fossils from the lacustrine evaporite sequences contributes to the study of distinct saline lake subenvironments as well as changes in the sedimentary evolution of the lake systems. Consequently, trace fossils can provide valuable insight for palaeoenvironmental analysis of at least some evaporite formations that accumulated in continental settings.  相似文献

Abstract

Ichnological analysis at the Pakhna Formation (Miocene, Cyprus) reveals, for the first time, the presence of graphoglyptid structures. The Pakhna Formation is dominated by pelagic/hemipelagic sediments, together with contourite, reworked turbidite and turbidite facies. Thus, a complex interaction between pelagic, bottom-current and gravitational sedimentation is envisaged. The discernment of facies is sometimes difficult, based principally on stratigraphic and microfacies features. The record of Helminthorhaphe as a component of the graphoglytid group supports the presence of turbidites, facilitating their differentiation from the other facies. Nereites ichnofacies, punctuating a dominant/background Zoophycos ichnofacies, would reflect changes in paleoenvironmental conditions. This record offers significant perspectives to advance in the study of bottom-current and gravitational processes through outcrop examples.  相似文献

Sediments in the marine environment are generally subject to higher energy levels than those of lake systems, and lakes are virtually unaffected by tidal range which modifies beach structures formed in response to wave effects. However, despite different energy levels, the textural characteristics of both marine and lacustrine sediments are very similar. The main difference between marine and lacustrine facies is the depth range over which these characteristics remain consistent. In lakes, depth limitation may influence the development of surface waves and restrict textural distributions.Simple textural relationships can be used to describe comparable marine and lacustrine sedimentary conditions. Sediments which have been altered by post-depositional erosion, such as lag deposits, or by ice-drop or wind blown settlement, show comparable textural modifications. The settlement of silt and clay size particulates, in the marine environment and lakes, may differ slightly because of the chemical differences between salt and fresh water.  相似文献

Fault-scarp related fan deltas developed in tilted half grabens in NE Greenland during late Jurassic—early Cretaceous rifting. This study documents ichnological and sedimentological characteristics of the Lower Cretaceous interval of a submarine fan-delta succession (Palnatokes Bjerg Formation, Wollaston Forland), which represents a time of waning rift activity and transgression. For this purpose, two variably exposed ca. 150 m-thick sections were studied ~10 km from the coeval fault scarp, near the axis of the most proximal fault block. Moreover, an additional ~20 m thick coeval succession was studied in the next fault block ~20 km from the coastline defining fault. The results indicate deposition on the basin floor, in the distal fan and in a mid-fan channel-overbank/splay complex of a subaqueous fan delta. The deposits are characterized mainly by various facies of high and low density turbidity currents, hybrid event beds, and transitional flow facies that grade upward into sediment starved basinal mudstones. The ichnological pattern recorded in these strata is strongly mixed, frequently containing elements of the impoverished Skolithos, Cruziana, Zoophycos ichnofacies, and more rarely of the Nereites ichnofacies. Characteristic features also include suites dominated by infaunal locomotion and feeding trails (including the “Curvolithus suite”) and the common occurrence of crustacean burrows. The results are indicative of a depositional system resembling a fjord-side delta that differs sedimentologically and ichnologically from many other gravity-flow systems of similar grain-size caliber. The ichnological pattern recorded in these strata is potentially a characteristic feature of the subaqueous fan-deltas in comparable settings, reflecting the distinct basin physiography with an abrupt change in bathymetry, a narrow basin geometry, and environmental stress resulting from unstable physical conditions. The counter slope of the rotated fault block may explain the common signs of flow concentration and abrupt fan termination.  相似文献

The Upper Triassic Fleming Fjord Formation of the Jameson Land Basin in East Greenland contains a well-exposed succession, 200–300 m thick, of lake deposits. The Malmros Klint Member, 100–130 m thick, is composed of cyclically bedded intraformational conglomerates, red siltstones and fine-grained sandstones and disrupted dolomitic sediments (paleosols). The cyclicity is composite with cycles having mean thicknesses of (25), 5.9 and 1.6 m. The overlying Carlsberg Fjord beds of the Ørsted Dal Member, 80–115 m thick, are composed of structureless red mudstones rhythmically broken by thin greyish siltstones. This unit also has a composite cyclicity with cycles having mean thicknesses of 5.0 and 1.0 m. The uppermost Tait Bjerg Beds of the Ørsted Dal Member, 50–65 m thick, can be divided into two units. A lower unit is composed of cyclically bedded intraformational conglomerates or thin sandstones, red mudstones, greenish mudstones and yellowish marlstones. An upper unit is composed of relatively simple cycles of grey mudstones and yellowish marlstones. Recognized cycles have mean thicknesses of 5.6 and 1.6 m. The lake deposits contain evidence of seasonal, orbital and long-term climatic change. Seasonal change is documented by numerous desiccation surfaces especially in the Malmros Klint Member and Carlsberg Fjord beds, orbital change is suggested by the composite cyclicity, and long-term climatic change is indicated by the systematic upwards change in sedimentary characteristics of the lake deposits. The sedimentary features of the Malmros Klint Member suggest lacustrine deposition in a dry climate that fluctuated between desert and steppe conditions, the Carlsberg Fjord beds probably record lacustrine lake deposition in a rather constant dry (steppe) climate, while the Tait Bjerg Beds record lake sedimentation in a climate that fluctuated between dry (steppe) and warm moist temperate. In the Tait Bjerg Beds the upward change in cycle characteristics indicates a shift towards more humid conditions. Climatic deductions from sedimentary facies are in good agreement with climate maps of Laurasia, as simulated by numerical climate models. Palaeomagnetic data indicate a northward drift of East Greenland of about 10° from ca. 25°N to ca. 35°N in the Middle to Late Triassic. The Fleming Fjord Formation which represents ca. 5 m.y. of the Late Triassic interval was deposited during latitudinal drift of 1–2°. It is possible that the observed long-term upward shift in climatic indicators within the formation can be ascribed to plate drift, but southward shift of climatic belts could also have been of importance.  相似文献

Orphan Basin is a deep-water basin on the continental margin off Newfoundland, which throughout the late Quaternary received proglacial sediment from local ice that crossed the continental shelf. Sediment from more distant sources was transported southward in the Labrador Current as proglacial plumes and in icebergs. Five sedimentary facies related to glacial processes are distinguished in cores recovered from Orphan Basin: hemipelagic sediment, nepheloid-layer deposits (layered mud), beds rich in ice-rafted detritus (IRD), sand and mud turbidites, and glaciogenic debris-flow deposits. IRD-rich beds correspond to periods of intensified iceberg calving, and layered mud, turbidites, and glaciogenic debris-flow deposits with glacial meltwater discharge.

In the Late Wisconsinan, eight periods of meltwater discharge and iceberg calving from the Newfoundland ice sheet are interpreted from the sediment facies in Orphan Basin. These discharges coincide with the terminations of the colder periods of the D–O cycles recorded in Greenland ice cores. The oldest minor meltwater event (27.5–28.5 cal ka) corresponds to the first Late Wisconsinan ice advance across the Grand Banks and NE Newfoundland Shelf. The following three meltwater discharges (23–23.5, 23.8–24.5, and 25–27 cal ka) deposited sand turbidites and glaciogenic debris-flow deposits seaward of Trinity Trough, which was occupied by an ice stream at this time, and mud turbidites in the southern part of the basin derived from a mid-shelf ice margin on the Grand Banks. Four periods of meltwater discharge occurred during the deglaciation and are centered at 15, 18.5, 19.75, and 20.75 cal ka. The youngest is correlated to Heinrich event 1. In the literature, the 18.5 and 20.75 cal ka events have been recorded in multiple glacial settings in the North Atlantic, and therefore, are interpreted as large-scale events of meltwater discharge and iceberg calving, but in Orphan Basin the 19.75 cal ka event is also of similar scale.  相似文献

The Eocene age Eckfeld/Eifel maar lake is interesting both because of the excellently preserved fossil remains and also for the laminated sediment sequence deposited under subtropical conditions. The latitude, however, has a higher seasonal insolation difference than comparable recent environments due to the northward shift of climatic zones during the Eocene. The overall aim of this investigation was to compare sediment types and lake development of a Tertiary (subtropical) maar lake with recent maar lakes, to discuss the origin of laminations, and search for their possible periodicities. The main sediment types, which were exposed during recent paleontological excavations, are laminated oilshales, partly laminated bituminous siltstones, and graded beds (mostly turbidites), which sometimes include laminated clay tops. Some deeper parts of the profile drilled in 1980, are dominated by diatomaceous laminites. The amount of organic carbon (around 8.5%) is comparable with recent lakes with low sedimentation rates. The high C/N ratios (25–30) of the Eckfeld sediments, as well as the fact that the highest Corg values are found in the graded beds, shows the importance of terrestrial plant debris for these lake sediments. Lamination of the oil shales was caused by the complex interrelationship of clastic supply (mineral and plant detritus), autochthonous organic deposition (mainly green algae), and early diagenetic siderite formation. The darker sublaminae represent the coarser clastic (organic and inorganic) input together with the autochthonous supply from the lake (green algae), whereas the lighter sublaminae are composed of settled fine-grained, mostly siliciclastic detritus derived from the probable yearly turnover of the density stratification of the lake. The thickness of the fine siliciclastic and organo-clastic layers, the morphology and palaeogeographical situation of the maar lake, and the occurrence of algal layers, strongly suggest that the laminated sediments are varves (although there is no definitive proof of this). Thickness variations from ca. 700 oil shale laminae were measured and computed. Time series analysis yielded at least one certain period of 5.5 yr, accepting that the laminae are indeed varves. The duration of the laminated lake sequence from Eckfeld maar, as deduced from sedimentation rates of the different sediment types is ca. 82,000 yr and, thus, within the typical life time of other small maar lakes.  相似文献

The Karoo Igneous Province of southern Africa is one of the classic Mesozoic flood basalt provinces of the world. In the case of the early Jurassic Kalkrand Formation of Namibia the succession comprises three major flood basalt units that are separated by two stratigraphically important fluvio-lacustrine interlayers. These horizons preserve a record of the complex interplay between sedimentation, effusion of Karoo flood basalts and extensional tectonics that predated and accompanied the break-up of Gondwanaland. Both sediment layers start with the dominantly local derivation of weathered and eroded lava debris, followed by the emplacement of subaqueous mass flows and subsequent deposition of chemical sediments. The latter are characterised by interbedded stromatolitic carbonates, grass-like structured gypsum, and plane-bedded sandstones and mudstones containing euhedral displacive gypsum crystals that grew in the subsurface as well as rosettes which nucleated on the sediment surface. The central parts of the lacustrine units are overlain by thin deltaic sandstones showing bottomset, foreset, and topset layering and, finally, braided fluvial, trough cross-bedded sandstones. Evidence of subsidence synchronous with the formation of lake bodies can be explained by two principal mechanisms. The first acted in localised areas only and is reflected by the development of small, centrally subsiding basins. From the repeated occurrence of onlapping geometries within such a pool, a multiphase history of sagging is deduced, being most likely related to periodic magma withdrawal and reduction in magmatic pressures in subsurface lava feeders beneath the basin floor. Abundant syn-subsident fracture features at lava–sediment contacts, such as sediment-, hydrothermal calcite-, and sometimes basic lava-filled fissure systems indicate the pronounced interaction between the underlying volcanics and these small areas of pronounced subsidence. Fluids passing through the volcanic pile exhaled into the lake, giving it the characteristics of alkaline lake systems described from more recent flood basalt areas associated with the modern African Rift System. On the regional scale, however, northerly trending extensional fault systems controlled half-graben basin geometries and both facies and thickness variations across faults indicate that tectonism operated contemporaneously with volcanism and lacustrine sedimentation. The analysis of faults and associated structures, such as regularly aligned sediment-filled fissures, sets of micro-faults, folds and basaltic dykes constrains the extensional opening direction for the Karoo graben structures in this area that heralded the opening of the South Atlantic and thus provides a basis to discuss the extensional history of the Namibian coastal margin within the regional tectonic framework.  相似文献

New discoveries show that very small theropod tracks (cf. Wildeichnus) are abundant in the upper part of the Moab Member, recently assigned to the Curtis Formation (formerly considered part of the Entrada Formation) in the Mid-?Late Jurassic of eastern Utah. The tracks represent a distinct small-theropod ichnofacies associated with eolian dune deposits that is easily differentiated from the water-lain beds of the overlying Megalosauripus-Therangospodus ichnofacies, which comprises the single-surface Moab megatracksite. Pterosaur track assemblages, representing the Pteriachnus ichnofacies, are found a few meters above the megatracksite surface in the upper tongue of the Summerville Formation.

The small theropod ichnofacies is reminiscent of other early Mesozoic dune facies ichnofaunas from the Wingate and Navajo formations (Late Triassic and Early Jurassic) where small theropod tracks occur in association with other small tetrapod footprints. All such examples evidently represent a recurrent dune facies ecosystem dominated by diminutive vertebrates. Because the small theropod ichnofacies is one of three ichnofacies found in a thin stratigraphic sequence (<20 m) that contains no body fossils, it is clear that vertebrate tracks play an important role in providing insight into the paleoecology of units previously considered devoid of any useful fossil evidence. The three successive ichnofacies represent a transgressive transition from sand dunes, through sandy shoreline to shallow marine environments, each with its quite distinct vertebrate fauna.  相似文献

Summary  The Upper Triassic carbonates of the area comprised between Maratea (Lucania) and Praia a Mare (Calabria) have been studied. They have been grouped into six facies assemblages which, in turn, define two depositional systems.
1)  a platform margin depositional system, comprising algae-bivalves-bearing dolomites (A1), Megalodontid-bearing limestones and dolomites (A2), dololutites and stromatolitic/bioclastic dolomites. (A3);
2)  a slope to basin depositional system comprising: buildup-facies, talus breccia and coarse to fine doloarenites (B1), coarse to fine doloarenites and dark laminated dololutites (B2), dark laminated dololutites (B3).
The algal and bivalve dolomites represent typical peritidal platform sediments arranged in cyclical patterns formed as shoal barrier and back-reef deposits periodically emerged and deformed in tepee structures. The outer margin of the platform was colonised by peculiar bioconstructions dominated by microbialites and serpulids; little sponges occur less frequently, whereas rare corals have been found only in some turbiditic beds. Along the slope, in a distance that can be estimated in 5 or 6 km, the coarse breccias give way to coarse turbidites, then finer turbidites and finally to dark, organic-rich micrites. Most of the floatstone and associated turbidites imply a fault- controlled slope. The laminated texture and the high O.M. (Organic Matter) content of the latter facies quite obviously point to a basin with poorly oxygenated bottom waters. In the uppermost Triassic there is an indication of a regressive trend, evidenced by the progradation of the platform facies. At that time a back-reef area was characterised by Megalodontid prairies alternated to areas of sandy bioclastic transport. However, due to the poor biostratigraphic record and intense cataclasis, no definite evidence of a well-structured Rhaetian platform margin with buildups and related basinal sediments exists. These sedimentary and paleoecological features match well with those found in the intraplatform basins of the Dolomia Principale, as well as with other coeval facies in Southern Apennines, Central Apennines, Southern Alps and in Southern Spain. Altogether, this evidence suggests that in the Norian time both Southern Alps and Apennines experienced a very similar tectonic evolution and comparable paleoceanographic conditions, characterised by the formation of numerous intraplatform throughs with restricted circulation, the latter influencing the bottom conditions as well as the marginal communities. The margins of these restricted basins, differently from the typical Dachstein reefs of the Upper Triassic Tethys, were dominated by microbial-serpulid communities.  相似文献

During the Early Cretaceous, wide areas of the Dinaric–Adriatic Carbonate Platform emerged for long periods. The Hauterivian–Barremian carbonates from Kolone–Barbariga show a few typical examples of lacustrine facies with dinosaur bones and brackish/palustrine facies. The sequence of the platform is made for the most part by subtidal and intertidal limestones. The bone levels are located in a large depression few meters deep in the uppermost Hauterivian marine limestones. The filling facies of this depression are made by oncolitic rudstones and algal boundstones, which represent marginal lacustrine facies, and by laminated limestones, thin stromatolitic levels and distal fringes of rudstones which represent relatively open lacustrine facies. The fossil content is characterized by rare charophyte stems, ostracods, gastropods and plant remains, while typical marine fauna is absent. At the Hauterivian–Barremian boundary a major emersion event has been observed, then a slow transgressive phase occurred. The transgressive facies are primarily made by mudstones with ostracods, charophytes and Spirillina (brackish and probably freshwater facies), wackestones with Ophtalmidiidae and rare dasyclad algae, storm layers with gastropods and miliolids and breccia-like dinoturbated beds. Wackstones, packstones and very rich in dasyclad grainstones outcrop at the top of the section, representing the maximum of the transgression. Trace elements content, carbon and oxygen stable isotope analyses have been performed to aid the palaeoenvironmental interpretation. In this geological setting, Barium seems to discriminate between brackish and freshwater facies. The isotopic values of the marine carbonates appear to depend on early diagenetic processes, meanwhile lacustrine facies seem to show a weak signal of the depositional environment.  相似文献

Summary Rhythmically laminated fine-grained lacustrine carbonatcs of the Cretaceous La Huérguina Limestone Formation at Las Hoyas fossil site, central Spain, contain not only a spectacular body fossil fauna, but also vertebrate and invertebrate trace fossils. The study of the Las Hoyas invertebrate ichnofauna provides valuable taphonomic, paleoecological and paleoenvironmental information and represents one of the first attempts to study in detail a lacustrine trace-fossil assemblage in carbonate rocks. The Las Hoyas ichnofauna includesCruziana problematica, Helminthoidichnites tenuis, Lockeia isp.,Palaeophycus tubularis, andTreptichnus pollardi. This assemblage is characterized by low ichnodiversity and small burrow size, and it is dominated by surface trails and extremely shallow burrows produced mostly by detritus feeders. The Las Hoyas ichnofauna indicates low to moderately low energy, permanently submerged, shallow-lacustrine areas. The ichnofauna is suggestive of environmental stress, most likely oxygen-depleted conditions in interstitial waters. Occurrence of traces in event beds indicates opportunistic colonization by epifauna and very shallow infauna during brief periods of improved oxygenation related to the passage of density underflows and dilute turbidity currents. The Las Hoyas ichnofauna resembles other shallow lacustrine trace-fossil assemblages of the archetypalMermia ichnofacies and differs significantly from the archetypalScoyenia ichnofacies. It is therefore best regarded as a proximal, depauperate example of theMermia ichnofacies. The Las Hoyas assemblage is similar to the slightly older lacustrine Montsec ichnofauna, but it is remarkably different from marine ichnocoenoses of other Mesozoickonservat-lagerst?tten in lithographic limestones such as those of Cerin, Solnhofen and Nusplingen.  相似文献

Benthic microbial mats are common in the alkaline hydromagnesite-magnesite playa lakes of Interior British Columbia. Four main zones are recognized based on mat morphology that can be related to the type and duration of wetting. From the basin margin toward the playa centre they are: (i) vegetated hummocky ground; (ii) polygonal hummocky ground; (iii) low-domal and stratiform mats, and (iv) laterally continuous and pustular mats. Mats in peripheral mudflats are commonly mineralized by hydromagnesite, mostly precipitated by capillary evaporation of shallow groundwaters. Mats forming in the ephemeral lake tend to have lower carbonate content.Although widespread, the mats are poorly preserved in the Holocene sedimentary record. Underlying sediments are commonly weakly bedded, disturbed or massive. Desiccation, dehydration, wetting-drying cycles, and grazing by invertebrates cause fragmentation of mats at the surface, facilitating erosion. Cryogranulation, interstitial mineral precipitation, vesiculation, bioturbation, compaction, and volume changes associated with diagenesis, disrupt and destroy lamination in the upper few centimetres. Most surviving organic matter is lost by early microbial degradation.  相似文献

The Middle–Late Ordovician Ghelli Formation in the Kopet Dagh region northeastern Alborz range of Iran is composed of siliciclastic rocks deposited in a variety of turbidite to marginal marine environments (deep marine clastic fan and related environments and prodelta, distal delta front, proximal delta front and distributary channels). The ichnology of the middle member of the Ghelli Formation is here reported. Combined sedimentological and ichnological analysis allows recognition of a tide‐influenced deltaic succession in the middle member of the Ghelli Formation consisting of three main facies associations: lower distributary channels, delta front and prodelta facies. Twenty‐two ichnogenera have been identified in this marginal marine succession: Arenicolites, Arthrophycus, Bergaueria, Chondrites, Conichnus, Cruziana, Cylindrichnus, Didymaulichnus, Diplichnites, Diplocraterion, Helminthopsis, Gyrochorte, Lockeia, Macaronichnus, Monomorphichnus, Palaeophycus, Planolites, Rosselia, Rusophcus, Skolithos, Teichichnus and ?Scolicia. Their distribution is clearly linked with lithofacies and depositional palaeoenvironments. The ichnological analysis reveals that the trace fossil suites developed in these environments indicate low diversity and low to moderate abundance of burrows, poor development of tiering and sporadic distribution. Low ichnodiversity and low bioturbation intensities with higher bioturbation clusters consist of facies‐crossing ichnogenera, and the impoverishment of suspension‐feeding trophic types indicates ‘stressed’, non‐archetypal expression of the Cruziana ichnofacies. The periodic higher intensities of bioturbation due to variations in hydrodynamic regimes of tidal currents reflect the archetypal of the Cruziana ichnofacies (and rare Skolithos ichnofacies).  相似文献
