We studied asexual reproduction of planarians under the natural and artificial photoperiodic conditions. It was shown that light inhibits the fission of planarians, while darkness stimulates it. The diurnal dynamics of the fission of planarians demonstrated a circadian rhythm. This rhythm is stable, which is expressed when the conditions are experimentally changed: constant darkness, unnatural rhythm of light-darkness succession). However, this stability is affected at the time zone change. The planarians are adapted to new conditions and begin to fission at once in correspondence with the new diurnal regime.  相似文献

The activities of neutral cholesterol esterase and acyl-CoA : cholesterol acyltransferase in rat adrenal gland were measured at various time intervals over 24 h. The activity of cholesterol esterase displayed diurnal rhythm, with a major peak at the onset of darkness coinciding with the peak in the diurnal rhythm of plasma corticosterone concentration. The activity of acyl-CoA : cholesterol acyltransferase also exhibited a characteristic diurnal rhythm, with the minimum activity occurring 3 h after the onset of darkness. The profile of the rhythm exhibited by the activity of the esterifying enzyme was similar to the mirror image of the pattern of diurnal rhythm in the activity of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase. Microsomal non-esterified cholesterol showed a gradual decline with a significant decrease in concentration at the onset of darkness, thus suggesting that diurnal removal of cholesterol in the environment of the esterifying enzyme and hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase leads to such diurnal decrease or increase in the activities of these two enzymes. Acute administration of corticotropin led to a 3-fold increase in the activity of cholesterol esterase, a 50% decrease in the activity of acyl-CoA : cholesterol acyltransferase and a 2-fold increase in the activity of hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase. Corticotropin administration also resulted in a significant decrease in microsomal non-esterified cholesterol and increase in plasma corticosterone concentration. These observations suggest that corticotropin plays an important part in generating the diurnal rhythm in the activities of the three enzymes.  相似文献

The appearance of a diurnal rhythm in serotonin content in the rat epiphysis is suppressed by rearing the young in constant light from birth. If the young are put from constant light into constant darkness at age 20 days, by age 30 days there is a marked rhythm in the content of pineal serotonin. It would appear that this rhythm is inborn, since it appears even after an initial suppression without the intervention of an external synchroniser. Fifty-eight-day-old males, maintained in constant light from 21 to 11 days before killing, and then in constant darkness, showed a normal diurnal rhythm in epiphysial serotonin content.  相似文献

The blastema growth was analyzed in fragments of planarians after their fission and after transverse transection at different body levels. The blastema was growing at a higher rate on tail fragments than on the head fragments and the growth rate was the higher, the closer the transection was to the head end. After fission, the blastema was growing at a slower rate than after transection in the fission zone. The rates of growth of coleoptiles of intact Avena seedlingswere studied by means of time-lapse photography, using infra-redradiation. When the seedlings are germinated in red light and subsequentlytransferred to darkness, a growth rhythm is established in whichthe first peak in the growth-rate curve occurs about 16–17hours after the transfer, and the second peak 24 hours later.When the transfer is made sufficiently early, three peaks mayoccur before growth ceases. The occurrence of the peaks andthe emergence of the primary leaf are independent of one another. Alteration of the point in the life-history at which the seedlingsare transferred from light to darkness changes the times ofoccurrence of the peaks, but does not affect the period of therhythm. The incidence of the rhythm shows no correlation withtime of day; therefore the rhythm is not due to diurnal changesin external conditions. Interruption of the dark period by several hours' exposure tored light causes the suppression of a previously induced rhythmand the establishment of a new one which commences at the timethe seedlings are restored to darkness. When they are grownunder continuous red light no rhythm is induced. Within the range 16 to 28 C., temperature has little or noeffect on the period of the rhythm. When seedlings of Triticum are grown under the same conditionsas those which induce a rhythm in Avena, no rhythmical variationin the growth rate can be detected.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the day–night cycle phase is a critical factor modulating diurnal rhythm of isolated honeybee's thermal preference or other factors are involved. The insects were exposed to standard (LD 12:12) and reversed (DL 12:12) photoperiods as well as to constant light and constant darkness conditions. Thermal preference and motor activity of honeybees were recorded for 3–5 days in a thermal gradient system. Under the standard (control) photoperiod conditions mean values of temperature selected by honeybees changed rhythmically within the period of about 24 h. Honeybees, exposed to the modified light–darkness cycle distinctly modified their rhythm of thermal preference. Under the reversed photoperiod conditions period of selected ambient temperature was much longer than before, until a complete reversal of the circadian oscillation was established at the end of the experiment. Experiments performed under constant light and constant darkness yielded undisturbed 24 h rhythms of both ambient temperature selection and locomotor activity. Under these conditions only a slight, nonsignificant flattening of the temperature selection curves was noticed. Both lack of substantial changes in the amplitude and occurring phase shifts of the rhythm, recorded in our experiments suggest its endogenous character. Our results prove that diurnal rhythm of ambient temperature selection by bee workers may be entrained by light–dark cycles. This implies a critical role of photoperiod in the modulation of nychthemeral oscillations of thermal preference in honeybees.  相似文献

1. Secretion pattern of Harderian gland of neonatal rats maintained under (a) diurnal lighting conditions; (b) continuous light or (c) continuous darkness was studied at light microscopy level. 2. All animals were placed in especially designed cages at 13:00 hr on day 1 and studied on day 7 at 13:00 and 23:00 hr, respectively. 3. Acini with intraluminal secretion were counted in glands from each animal and the results were separately grouped for male and female animals. 4. A diurnal rhythm in secretion pattern of rat Harderian gland in neonatal period was demonstrated. 5. A statistically significant difference was observed in the gland secretion pattern between males and females at both, 13:00 and 23:00 hr when the animals were kept under diurnal lighting conditions. 6. Under continuous light or continuous darkness, the diurnal rhythm in secretion pattern was lost and no significant differences were seen when data from males were compared to those from female neonates. 7. Results are discussed in terms of the possible function of Harderian gland as element of an extraretinal photoreceptor system involved in the regulation of pineal function in neonatal rats.  相似文献

Rabbits that have been exposed to the natural cycles of day and night exhibit marked diurnal changes in the shape of their Visual Evoked Potential in constant environmental conditions. The results of exposure to artificial 24 hr light-dark cycles strongly suggest that it is the regular alternation of daylight and darkness which acts as the synchronizing "Zeitgeber" for the V.E.P. rhythm which exists after exposure to the natural cycles of day and night. It would seem further that the V.E.P. changes reflect a square-wave like rhythm in the sensitivity of the visual system to photic stimuli, in which the sensitivity is much higher at night than in the day-time. The probable importance of the diurnal V.E.P. rhythm for the occurrence of daily fluctuations in behaviour is discussed.  相似文献

The activity rhythm of emerging grayling, Thymallus thymallus , fry was studied under semi-natural rearing conditions, using special traps buried in the gravel. Emergence was mainly diurnal with a maximum in the first hours of daylight. Fry rested at the emergence site during the daylight and moved downstream at night, particularly during the first 3 hours of darkness. These results are compared with the known activity patterns of other salmonids.  相似文献

Abstract.  The present study tested whether the pattern of feeding activity in the firebug Pyrrhocoris apterus (L.) is sex- and wing morph-related, diurnal or nocturnal, as well as whether the feeding rhythm persists in constant darkness. Temporal patterns of feeding activity are analysed in macropterous and brachypterous adults reared under long-day (LD 18 : 6 h) and short-day (LD 12 : 12 h) photoperiods, and in adults transferred to constant darkness. In females, the total feeding activity is highest in long-day reproductively active brachypters, intermediate in short-day diapausing brachypters, and lowest in macropters; the differences among males are substantially smaller. Although the total feeding activity of macropterous males is higher than in macropterous females, no sex-related differences are found in feeding activity of diapausing and reproductively active brachypters. The frequency of feeding exhibits sex-related differences, with obviously higher values in males. Mean feeding periods of macropterous and reproductively active brachypterous males are shorter than in females of the same wing morph. Mean interfeeding periods are longest in macropters, intermediate in diapausing brachypters, and shortest in reproductively active brachypters, and always lower in males than in females. The study shows that the feeding activity of P. apterus adults is age-, sex- and wing morph-related, and exhibits a diurnal pattern, except in reproductively active brachypterous females. The latter do not express a clear diurnal rhythm of feeding, presumably because of interactions with cycles of egg development and oviposition. The persistence of diurnal rhythm of feeding activity in short-day brachypterous females transferred to constant darkness indicates an endogeneity of this rhythm in P. apterus .  相似文献

Planarians have a remarkable capacity for regeneration after ablation, and they reproduce asexually by fission. However, some planarians can also reproduce and maintain their sexual organs. During the regenerative process, their existing sexual organs degenerate and new ones develop. However, little is known about hormonal regulation during the development of reproductive organs in planarians. In this study, we investigated the effects of 17β-estradiol (a steroid) and bisphenol A (an endocrine disrupter) on the formation of sexual organs in the hermaphroditic planarian Dugesia ryukyuensis. Under control conditions, all worm tissues regenerated into sexual planarians with sexual organs within 4 weeks after ablation. However, in the presence of bisphenol A or 17β-estradiol, although they apparently regenerated into sexual planarians, the yolk glands, which are one of the female sexual organs, failed to regenerate even 7 weeks after ablation. These data suggest that planarians have a steroid hormone system, which plays a key role in the formation and maturation of sexual organs.  相似文献

Humans and animals demonstrate diurnal rhythms in physiology and behavior, which are generated by the circadian pacemaker, located in the supra-chiasmatic nucleus (SCN). The endogenous diurnal rhythm of the SCN is synchronized to the diurnal cycle most effectively by light. However, light also influences the SCN and its output instantaneously, as is demonstrated for the immediate effects of light on SCN neuronal firing frequency and on the output of the SCN to the pineal, inhibiting melatonin secretion. In addition to this, the circadian pacemaker modulates neuronally also other organs such as the adrenal. Therefore, the authors investigated the effect of this light input to the SCN on human heart rate, using light at different phases of the day-night cycle and light of different intensities. Resting heart rate (HR) was measured in volunteers between 20 and 40 years of age during supine, awake, resting conditions, and after 2 hours of fasting. In Experiment 1, HR was measured at different times over the day-night cycle at 0 lux and at indoor light. In Experiment 2, HR was measured at different times over the day-night cycle at controlled light intensities of 0 lux, 100 lux, and 800 lux. The authors demonstrate a clear diurnal rhythm in resting HR in complete darkness, similar to that measured under constant routine conditions. Second, it is demonstrated that light increases resting HR depending on the phase of the day-night cycle and on the intensity of light. These data strongly suggest that the circadian pacemaker modulates human HR.  相似文献

The mechanisms underlying the diurnal rhythm of flashing in L. lusitanica were investigated. It was shown that the diurnal rhythm of flashing was present also in animals kept in continuous darkness, showing that it was not directly determined by the periodic variations of the ambient light intensity which take place through the nicthemeron. During the hours in which the animals did not flash, photogenic volleys of normal size and contour could still be recorded, although at a lower frequency; however, they were not followed by light emission. Statistical controls ruled out the possibility that the absence of flashing during daytime was due to the reduced repetition rate of the photogenic volleys. The ablation of the gonads performed during day-time was followed by the reappearence of a flash in the wake of each photogenic volley. It is concluded that two mechanism control the diurnal rhythm of flashing, namely; a central mechanism, responsible for the decrease in volley frequency; and a peripheral mechanism, of gonadal origin, which is responsible for the inhibition of the photogenic organ.  相似文献

Chalcone-synthase (CHS) activity was followed during the development of primary leaves of oat (Avena sativa L.) seedlings grown under different illumination conditions. Continuous darkness and continuous light resulted in similar time courses of enzyme activity. The maximum of CHS activity in etiolated leaves was delayed by 1 d and reached about half the level of that of light-grown leaves. In seedlings grown under defined light-dark cycles a diurnal rhythm of CHS activity and its protein level was observed which followed the rhythm of CHS-mRNA translational activity (Knogge et al. 1986). Bryophyllum fedtschenkoi is a Crassulacean acid metabolism plant whose phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase is regulated by reversible phosphorylation in response to a circadian rhythm. A partially purified protein kinase phosphorylated phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase in vitro with a stoichiometry approaching one per subunit and caused a concomitant 5- to 10-fold decrease in the sensitivity of the carboxylase to inhibition by malate. The sites phosphorylated in vitro were identical to those phosphorylated in intact tissue. The activity of the protein kinase was controlled in a circadian fashion. During normal diurnal cycles, kinase activity appeared between 4 and 5 h after the onset of darkness and disappeared 2----3 h before the end of darkness. Kinase activity displayed circadian oscillations in constant environmental conditions. The activity of protein phosphatase 2A, which dephosphorylates phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, did not oscillate. Treatment of detached leaves with the protein synthesis inhibitors puromycin and cycloheximide blocked the nocturnal appearance of the protein kinase activity, maintained phosphoenolypyruvate carboxylase in the dephosphorylated state and blocked the circadian rhythms of CO2 output that is observed in constant darkness and CO2-free air. The simplest explanation of the data is that there is a circadian rhythm in the synthesis of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase kinase.  相似文献

Mating in moths is generally mediated by female-produced sex pheromones. Mating activity, female pheromone production/release and male pheromone responsiveness all show diurnal variations in many species. We found that the response of the male Egyptian cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis, to sex pheromone gland extracts showed a diel rhythm in olfactometer tests, and the variation was persistent for at least 1 day in constant darkness. High male response to sex pheromone was correlated in time with high mating and locomotor activity. Male S. littoralis, maintained in constant darkness and exposed to pheromone gland extracts on a daily basis, showed an induced temporal variation in response after several days, in contrast to unexposed males. This suggests that in the absence of other external zeitgebers, exposure to sex pheromone may function to synchronise circadian behavioural rhythms in male moths. The daily rhythm in mating activity in S. littoralis is also shown to be persistent for at least 2 days in constant darkness. Pairs mated significantly less when either the male or female had been raised in a light:dark cycle 10 h out of phase, indicating that the proposed circadian rhythm in mating activity is composed of rhythmic mating preference/ability in both sexes.  相似文献
