The optimal shape of the front profile of the thick lens in the eye of the scallop,Pecten is theoretically, geometric optically investigated as a function of the refractive index of the lens and the retina, as well as of the geometrical parameters of the eye. The shape of the theoretical front surfaces is compared with that of the real, experimentally determined front face of the lens. The degree of correction of the lens for spherical aberration of the reflecting spherical mirror in thePecten eye is examined. The optimal shape of the front profile of the lens depends strongly on a set of parameters, such that a certain fine tuning is required among them to assure a full correction for spherical aberration. The extreme variability of the eye parameters and the shape of the front face of the lens in the scallop is inconsistent with this fine tuning requirement. The degree of correction of thePecten lens for spherical aberration might not be as good as it could be, a possible biooptical reason for which is discussed.  相似文献

Pollen of Crocus biflorus Miller subsp. biflorus from natural habitats of Tusculum (Frascati, near Rome, Italy) has been studied in order to compare its structure and physiology to pollen of other Crocus species belonging to the Crocus sativus group. Mature pollen grains are rounded, 60 μm in diameter, in-aperturate (but with surface incisions where exine is lacking). DAPI staining reveals a spindle-shaped generative nucleus which is intensely fluorescent, and vegetative nucleus which is less fluorescent, and is elongated with numerous lobes. At anthesis the pollen is bicellular, but about 2% of tricellular grains occur among the pollen grains released from the anthers as well as on both naturally or handpollinated stigmas. Pollen germination is low in vitro, but higher in vivo. The pollen tubes are of normal shape. An electron-dense surface coat is sometimes visible on the exine, which in many cases, is detached from the exine. The vegetative cytoplasm is very rich in glycolipid bodies surrounded by endoplasmic reticulum. The generative cell has a lobed cell wall and is surrounded by the vegetative nucleus.  相似文献

The main benefit of the oblong shape of schools of fish is supposed to be the protection against predation. Models of self‐organised travelling groups have shown that this shape may arise as a side effect of the avoidance of collisions with group members. These models were developed for schools of fish in open water, whereas the oblong shape of schools of real fish has mostly been observed in schools in tanks. Therefore, it is not known how school shape in a tank originates neither in models nor in real fish. To find out what causes this shape, we use the combination of a theoretical and an empirical study. We test the predictions produced by our earlier models regarding the effect of school size on the school shape both in a model of self‐organised schooling in a tank and empirically. Empirically, we study the 3D positions of all individuals in the schools of 10–60 real mullets (Chelon labrosus). We calculate for each individual its distance to its nearest neighbour and its velocity and we measure per school its length and width. The relation between school shape and size in the model and in the real mullets supports our prediction and thus supports the hypothesis that school shape may be emergent from the avoidance of collisions during coordinated travelling.  相似文献

On the use of size functions for shape analysis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
According to a recent mathematical theory a shape can be represented by size functions, which convey information on both the topological and metric properties of the viewed shape. In this paper the relevance of the theory of size functions to visual perception is investigated. An algorithm for the computation of the size functions is presented, and many theoretical properties of the theory are demonstrated on real images. It is shown that the representation of shape in terms of size functions (1) can be tailored to suit the invariance of the problem at hand and (2) is stable against small qualitative and quantitative changes of the viewed shape. A distance between size functions is used as a measure of similarity between the representations of two different shapes. The results obtained indicate that size functions are likely to be very useful for object recognition. In particular, they seem to be well suited for the recognition of natural and articulated objects.  相似文献

Morphological variation related to pH was investigated in two acidophilic desmid species (Euastrum binale var. gutwinskii and Staurastrum hirsutum) utilizing geometric morphometric methods. Clones isolated from acidic habitats were cultured using a range of pH values from 3.5 to 6.5. The plasticity of ensuing populations was quantified and illustrated by the general Procrustes superimposition of landmarks placed along the outline of cells and subsequent statistical analyses of shape data. In both species, there was a significant effect of pH on the morphology of cells. In Staurastrum hirsutum, the pH-related morphological change was accompanied by a decrease in the size of cells cultured at a higher pH. However, in Euastrum binale, cell size did not differ in relation to pH, but cell shape was characterized by a deepening of the incisions between cell lobes at higher pH. In both species, cell complexity based on surface-to-volume ratio was positively correlated with increasing pH. We conclude that by manipulating their surface-to-volume ratios, these desmid species can respond to pH variations in their environment.  相似文献

The cellular proportion of free and protein‐bound NADH complexes is increasingly recognized as a metabolic indicator and biomarker. Because free and bound forms exhibit different fluorescence spectra, we consider whether autofluorescence shape sufficiently correlates with mitochondrial metabolism to be useful for monitoring in cellular suspensions. Several computational approaches for rapidly quantifying spectrum shape are used to detect Saccharomyces cereviseae response to oxygenation, and to the addition of mitochondrial functional modifiers and metabolic substrates. Observed changes appear consistent with previous studies probing free/protein‐bound proportions, making this a potentially useful approach for the real‐time monitoring of metabolism. Like some of the Mediterranean members of the genus Lupinus, the New World lupin, Lupinus mutabilis (Sweet; cv. Inti), exhibits prolonged (20-40 min) exudation of phloem sap from incisions made in stems, in the raceme and at the tips and sutures of developing fruits. Just prior to or immediately following abscission of flowers of L. mutabilis there was also spontaneous exudation from the proximal face of the abscission zone at the base of the pedicel. This is not a recorded feature of other lupins. Analysis of solutes in this exudate was consistent with its having been derived directly from phloem. The major solutes were sucrose (0.940.04 M), amino acids (18811 mM, 45% as asparagine and 15% as glutamine), K ion (52 mM), and total phosphorus (17 mM). Microscopic examination of the proximal face of the pedicel abscission zone at or following abscission showed little or no breakage of the cells at the zone. The major solutes of spontaneous exudate were similar to those in exudates collected from incisions made in the supporting raceme, upper stem and branches, at the tips and sutures of developing fruits and in the mid- and basal stem regions. However, there were significant compositional differences among minor constituents. The spontaneous exudate had a higher level of Ca ion and, consequently, a narrower Mg/Ca ratio (2.8) than exudate from incisions in the adjacent raceme (9.3) or fruits (15.7). There were also higher concentrations of trace elements (Mn, Zn and Cu) but lower concentrations (3 ng m-1) of cytokinins compared to exudates collected from incisions (20 ng ml-1). The relative contents of K and Na ions in exudates from incisions at different sites on the plant showed evidence of selective phloem loading and downward translocation of Na ion and selective loading and upward translocation of K ion.  相似文献

Summary The leaf shape of the mutantfiliformis (fil) ofHyoscyamus niger L. is strongly modified by external factors (like nutrition and light) as well as by the height of insertion. The name filiformis refers to thread-like leaves which always occur in the inflorencence; they may also be formed in the vegetative region, especially under short day conditions. Other leaves may have a small rhombic blade or a larger blade with irregular edges and deep incisions. Even pinnate leaves have been found. In contrast to the leaves of normalHyoscyamus, all mutant leaves (hypsophylls included) have a stalk-like basal portion that seems to be homologous to the basal part of the normal blade. This mutant is caused by one recessive factor which is linked neither toann nor topall.the submarginal initials of the normalHyoscyamus blade were always found dividing according to the periclinal-anticlinal type, while in the mutant the activity of the submarginal initials frequently resulted in a primarily biseriate mesophyll (so-called double-edged segmentation).This is apparently the first time that gene control of the mode of submarginal blade growth has been observed. Further differences between mutant and normalHyoscyamus concern the venation, the lengths of palisade cells and of stomata guard cells, the frequency of stomata per mm2, and the thickness of the blade.

To explore the relationship between morphological change and species diversification, we reconstructed the evolutionary changes in skull size, skull shape, and body elongation in a monophyletic group of eight species that make up salamander genus Triturus. Their well‐studied phylogenetic relationships and the marked difference in ecological preferences among five species groups makes this genus an excellent model system for the study of morphological evolution. The study involved three‐dimensional imagery of the skull and the number of trunk vertebrae, in material that represents the morphological, spatial, and molecular diversity of the genus. Morphological change largely followed the pattern of descent. The reconstruction of ancestral skull shape indicated that morphological change was mostly confined to two episodes, corresponding to the ancestral lineage that all crested newts have in common and the Triturus dobrogicus lineage. When corrected for common descent, evolution of skull shape was correlated to change in skull size. Also, skull size and shape, as well as body shape, as inferred from the number of trunk vertebrae, were correlated, indicating a marked impact of species' ecological preferences on morphological evolution, accompanied by a series of niche shifts, with the most pronounced one in the T. dobrogicus lineage. The presence of phylogenetic signal and correlated evolutionary changes in skull and body shape suggested complex interplay of niche shifts, natural selection, and constraints by a common developmental system. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 113 , 243–255.  相似文献

The reef coral Montastraea annularis has been used in a wide range of investigations. Recently, it has been recognized as a complex of three species based on field observations of the variation in colony shape. These observations have also been confirmed by molecular methods as well as morphometrics on individual corallites in the colonies. This paper presents a new quantitative method for measuring overall colony shape based on geostatistics. Seventeen colonies collected from San Blas, Panama in 1995 and 1996 were examined using the Polhemus 3SPACE FASTRAK system to construct three-dimensional coordinates of the center of several hundred corallites in each colony. This method measures the larger bumps or “ridges” as well as the smaller bumps or “lumps” of the colonies. Variograms were then calculated for all the specimens and the lag distances and the values of the variogram were used in a multivariate statistical analysis. Overall, this method indicated that M. annularis and Montastaea faveolata overlap in their relative amount of bumpiness in colony shape while Montastraea franksi is distinct from the other two species. This method has implications for both the modern and fossil record of Montastraea as well as other organisms with similar shapes.  相似文献

Using a geometric morphometric approach, we explored the variation in skull size and skull shape in banded newts (genus Ommatotriton). The genus Ommatotriton is represented by two allopatric, genetically well‐defined species: Ommatotriton ophryticus and O. vittatus. Within each species, two subspecies have been recognised. The samples used in this study cover the geographical and genetic variation within each species. We found statistically significant variation in skull size between species and among populations within species. When corrected for size, there was no significant variation in shape between species. Our results indicate that the variation in skull shape within the genus Ommatotriton is almost entirely due to size‐dependent, allometric shape changes. The exception is the shape of the ventral skull in males. Males of O. ophryticus and O. vittatus significantly diverge in the shape of the ventral cranium. The ventral skull, more precisely the upper jaw and palate, is directly functionally related to feeding. In general, our results indicate that allometry is a significant factor in the morphological variation of banded newts. However, the divergence in the ventral skull shape of males indicates that sexual selection and niche partitioning may have influenced the evolution of skull shape in these newts.  相似文献

The concept of shape space proposed by Perelson and Oster (1979,J. Theor. Biol. 81, 645–670) has been a useful tool for theoretical immunologists, who have invoked it to model idiotypic binding, which plays a significant role in mathematical models of immune networks. The actual construction of such a space from its definition requires specialized experimental information, which is not completely available. In this article, we discuss, with illustrative examples, how graphical representations similar to the idea of shape space can be derived by analyzing real affinity matrices, and the relative merits of such representations to approximations that might be obtained by the approach of Perelson and Oster. We also give directions for future research with a view toward applications.  相似文献

Fruit shape is a quantitatively inherited character. In tomato, two major loci, sun and ovate, control fruit shape index, which is the ratio of fruit height over width. In this study, we measured many additional fruit shape features in three inter-specific F2 populations using the software application Tomato Analyzer. These populations were derived from varieties carrying elongated fruit but for which the major shape loci differed. We compared the effect of the major fruit shape loci with overall shape, as well as with the distal and proximal end shape features in each population. sun and ovate represented the largest effect on fruit shape in the Howard German and Sausage F2 populations, respectively. The largest effect QTL in the Rio Grande population carrying neither sun nor ovate, were fs8.1 on chromosome 8 and tri2.1/dblk2.1 on chromosome 2. These latter loci were also segregating in the other two populations, thus indicating common regions that control shape across the three populations. The phenotypic analyses showed that sun and ovate contributed to almost all aspects of shape such as the distal and proximal end features. In Rio Grande however, the largest effect QTL did not control all aspects of shape and the distal and proximal features were distinctly controlled in that population. Combined, our results implied that within the cultivated tomato germplasm pool the largest effect on elongated fruit shape was controlled by a combination of the loci sun, ovate, fs8.1 and tri2.1/dblk2.1. Summary Stridulation of grasshoppers is controlled by hemisegmental pattern generator subunits which probably are restricted to the metathoracic ganglion complex (TG3-complex). The coordination of left and right pattern generator subunits depends on commissures of the TG3-complex (Ronacher 1989). The coordination of the stridulatory movements was studied in Chorthippus dorsatus males with partial mediosagittal incisions in the TG3-complex.Animals bearing anterior incisions in the TG3-complex, by which all commissures of the metathoracic neuromere and the first abdominal neuromere were transected, were still able to produce bilaterally coordinated species-specific stridulatory movements. Commissures of the T3- and A1-neuromere, thus, are not necessary, and the A2-, A3-commissures are sufficient for this coordination (Figs. 3, 4).Animals with partial posterior incisions, extending until A1, had deficits in their stridulation pattern; the coordination between the hindlegs was impaired though not completely lost (Fig. 6). This is discussed in view of the structure of stridulation interneurons identified in a related grasshopper species (Omocestus viridulus).These results indicate an unexpected substantial contribution of the abdominal neuromeres A2 and A3 to the control of stridulatory movements. Most phytophagous insects feed on a single plant during development, and this may influence not only performance‐linked traits, but also more subtle morphological differences. Insect–plant interactions are thus valuable for studying environmental influences on phenotypes. By using geometric morphometrics, we investigated the variation in forewing size and shape in the butterfly Heliconius erato phyllis reared on six species of passion vines (Passiflora spp.). We detected wing shape sexual dimorphism, for which the adaptive significance deserves further investigation. There was size as well as wing shape variation among individuals fed on different hosts. These subtle differences in shape were interpreted as environmental effects on development, which should be under weak natural selection for these traits, and therefore not strongly canalized. This result reinforces the role of plasticity on host‐plant use, as well as the corresponding consequences on developmental variability among phytophagous insects. We propose that this variation can be an important factor in resource specialization and partner recognition, possibly triggering reproductive isolation and sympatric speciation in phytophagous insects. Aims

To develop multiplex TaqMan real‐time PCR assays for detection of spinach seedborne pathogens that cause economically important diseases on spinach.

Methods and Results

Primers and probes were designed from conserved sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (for Peronospora farinosa f. sp. spinaciae and Stemphylium botryosum), the intergenic spacer (for Verticillium dahliae) and the elongation factor 1 alpha (for Cladosporium variabile) regions of DNA. The TaqMan assays were tested on DNA extracted from numerous isolates of the four target pathogens, as well as a wide range of nontarget, related fungi or oomycetes and numerous saprophytes commonly found on spinach seed. Multiplex real‐time PCR assays were evaluated by detecting two or three target pathogens simultaneously. Singular and multiplex real‐time PCR assays were also applied to DNA extracted from bulked seed and single spinach seed.

Conclusions

The real‐time PCR assays were species‐specific and sensitive. Singular or multiplex real‐time PCR assays could detect target pathogens from both bulked seed samples as well as single spinach seed.

Significance and Impact of the Study

The freeze‐blotter assay that is currently routinely used in the spinach seed industry to detect and quantify three fungal seedborne pathogens of spinach (C. variabile, S. botryosum and V. dahliae) is quite laborious and takes several weeks to process. The real‐time PCR assays developed in this study are more sensitive and can be completed in a single day. As the assays can be applied easily for routine seed inspections, these tools could be very useful to the spinach seed industry.  相似文献

Objectives: Morphometric analysis of footprints is a classic means for orthopedic diagnosis. In forensics and physical anthropology, it is commonly used for the estimation of stature and body mass. We studied individual variation and sexual dimorphism of foot dimensions and footprint shape by a combination of classic foot measurements and geometric morphometric methods. Methods: Left and right feet of 134 healthy adult males and females were scanned twice with a 3D optical laser scanner, and stature as well as body mass were recorded. Foot length and width were measured on the 3D scans. The 2D footprints were extracted as the plantar‐most 2 mm of the 3D scans and measured with 85 landmarks and semilandmarks. Results: Both foot size and footprint shape are sexually dimorphic and relate to stature and body mass. While dimorphism in foot length largely results from dimorphism in stature, dimorphism in footprint shape partly owes to the dimorphism in BMI. Stature could be estimated well based on foot length (R2 = 0.76), whereas body mass was more closely related to foot width (R2 = 0.62). Sex could be estimated correctly for 95% of the individuals based on a combination of foot width and length. Discussion: Geometric morphometrics proved to be an effective tool for the detailed analysis of footprint shape. However, for the estimation of stature, body mass, and sex, shape variables did not considerably improve estimates based on foot length and width. Aims: To validate a real‐time PCR test for the diagnosis of Glässer’s disease, a major pig disease caused by Haemophilus parasuis. Methods and Results: The specificity of a real‐time PCR amplifying the inf B gene was validated with 68 H. parasuis isolates and 36 strains of closely related species. As well, 239 samples of DNA from tissues and fluids of 16 experimentally challenged animals were tested with the real‐time PCR, and the results were compared with culture and a conventional PCR. The real‐time PCR produced significantly more positive results than the conventional PCR (165 vs 86). Conclusions: The sensitivity of the real‐time PCR combined with high specificity makes it a very valuable tool for the diagnosis of Glässer’s disease. Significance and Impact of Study: This new method will improve the ability of laboratories to diagnose Glässer’s disease, especially in laboratories where the culture method for H. parasuis is not optimal.  相似文献
