The saddleback tamarin (Saguinus fuscicollis)combines a number of behavioral and physiological attributes which seem to violate “rules” of ethology. Of particular interest is the combination of facultative polyandry and high paternal investment. The social organization and breeding system of the tamarin also appear to combine reproductive restraint with an extremely high reproductive potential. These paradoxes may be resolved by noting that the combination of ecological circumstances and breeding systems has produced a species of limited genetic variability. Inclusive fitness is an important factor in situations of low genetic variability and may explain these apparent paradoxes.  相似文献

Larval tobacco hornworms,Manduca sexta (L.), of 2 different colonies were exposed to parasitism by the gregarious endoparasitoid,Cotesia congregata (Say). A comparison was made of parasitoid larval, pre-pupal, and pupal mortality, female and male dry weight and larval development time. In general, “Maryland” hornworms were more suitable hosts than “North Carolina” hornworms. Although the presence of dietary nicotine increased parasitoid mortality in individuals reared from hornworms of both colonies, the effect was more severe among individuals parasitizing the North Carolina hornworms. In the aphidophagous syrphid species,Betasyrphus serarius (Wiedemann),Metasyrphus frequens Matsumura andSyrphus vitripennis (Meigen), females in search of oviposition sites assess the qualitative and quantitative value of pea aphid colonies for securing the successful development of their offspring. They select, as their oviposition sites, young and “promising” aphid colonies consisting of nymphs and/or adult aphids including few winged adults. They neglect large, older colonies of 4th-instar nymphs and/or winged adult aphids. The 3 syrphid species adopt “buy-futures” ovipositional tactic as doesEpisyrphus balteatus (de Geer), although some tinge of “spot-transaction” is noticed inM. frequens andS. vitripennis.  相似文献

Some aspects of sociosexual behavior and the age at which maturing females experienced their first evident pregnancy and at which maturing males caused their first evident pregnancy were recorded in Saguinus fuscicolliscohabiting from 6 months of age with either an adult or a maturing sex partner. The following pair combinations and trios were studied: young male -young female, young male-adult female, adult male-young female, and adult male-young male-young female. The most frequent type of social interaction between young animals was rough and tumble play, while huddling was the most frequent interaction between young animals and their adult partners. Grooming and sexual interactions were very infrequent and there were no differences in the frequencies of these interactions among subject groups. Maturing females cohabiting with an adult male conceived significantly earlier than maturing females cohabiting with a male of their own age. Maturing males cohabiting with adult females sired offspring at a significantly earlier age than males cohabiting with a female of their own age. Some possible behavioral and physiological processes involved in the causation of early reproductive success in young tamarins cohabiting with adults are discussed. The syrphid flyEpisyrphus balteatus (de Geer) migrating from maple trees to leguminous plants in mid-April, assesses the qualitative and quantitative value of pea aphid colonies for securing successful development of her offspring. She selects young and “promising” pea aphid colonies of small size. This generally agrees with the “buy-futures” ovipositional tactic the syrphid fly adopts when it utilizes the maple aphids. The advantage of a “buy-futures” ovipositional tactic found in many syrphid species is discussed in comparison with other aphidophagous insects.  相似文献

Sublines are used in the third-generation breeding and testing of coastal Douglas-fir in British Columbia, with the original intent of selecting only one genotype per subline for production populations (e.g., seed orchards) to eliminate relatedness among parents (therein called “1/SL”). We evaluated three additional selection scenarios that did not consider the subline structure. One of the scenarios strictly selected on the basis of the highest breeding values of the trees (“TOP”); another scenario used the TOP selections, but assigned the number of ramets per selection proportionally to the selection breeding value (“LIND”); lastly, a simulated annealing technique was applied to maximize gain under explicit constraints on coancestry (“OPTS”). All three alternative selection scenarios resulted in some relatedness and coancestry among selections, but the last two provided increases in average breeding values compared to those obtained by the 1/SL scenario. Effective population sizes (and consequently inbreeding coefficients) varied among the three selection scenarios. Effects of the various selections on merchantable volume at rotation age were determined using a linear regression model based on an individual tree model (TASS), which was first run to determine the relationship between merchantable volume and inbreeding (f). LIND and TOP selections yielded the highest breeding values but, due to the increased coancestry among selections, paid a penalty in the merchantable volume determination. OPTS maximized merchantable volume at rotation age 60 after including more than 13 selections with an increase of around 3% over that obtained by the 1/SL selection scenario, with an associated increase in Ne of 50%. Other implications of the three alternative selection scenarios are discussed.  相似文献

Genetic control of aluminium tolerance in rye (Secale cereale L.)   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
 Aluminium (Al) tolerance in roots of two cultivars (“Ailés” and “JNK”) and two inbred lines (“Riodeva” and “Pool”) of rye was studied using intact roots immersed in a nutrient solution at a controlled pH and temperature. Both the cultivars and the inbred lines analysed showed high Al tolerance, this character being under multigenic control. The inbred line “Riodeva” was sensitive (non-telerant) at a concentration of 150 μM, whereas the “Ailes” cultivar showed the highest level of Al tolerance at this concentration. The segregation of aluminium-tolerance genes and several isozyme loci in different F1s, F2s and backcrosses between plants of “Ailés” and “Riodeva” were also studied. The segregation ratios obtained for aluminium tolerance in the F2s analysed were 3 : 1 and 15 : 1 (tolerant : non-tolerant) while in backcrosses they were 1 : 1 and 3 : 1. These results indicated that Al tolerance is controlled by, at least, two major dominant and independent loci in rye (Alt1 and Alt3). Linkage analyses carried out between Al-tolerance genes and several isozyme loci revealed that the Alt1 locus was linked to the aconitase-1 (Aco1), nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase-2 (Ndh2), esterase-6 (Est6) and esterase-8 (Est8) loci, located on chromosome arm 6RL. The order obtained was Alt1-Aco1-Ndh2-Est6-Est8. The Alt3 locus was not linked to the Lap1, Aco1 and Ndh2 loci, located on chromosome arms, 6RS, 6RL and 6RL respectively. Modifications of different EEG rhythms induced by a single neurofeedback session (by the EEG characteristics) directed toward an increase in the ratio of the spectral powers (SPs) of the α vs θ oscillations were compared with the psychological characteristics of the tested subjects (the group included 30 persons). A generally accepted neurofeedback technique was used; the intensity of acoustic white noise served as the feedback signal. EEG potentials were recorded from the C3 and C4 leads. Psychological testing was carried out using Eysenck’s (EPQ), Rusalov’s (OST), and (16 PF) questionnaires. The directions of changes in the SPs of EEG frequency components were found to significantly correlate with some individuality-related peculiarities of the tested subjects. The SP of the δ rhythm correlated with the EPQ scale “neuroticism,” OST scale “social plasticity,” and 16 PF factors H (“parmia”), I (“premsia”), and Q3 (“self-control of behavior”). The SP of the θ component demonstrated correlations with the OST scales “ergisity,” “plasticity,” and “social temp” and with 16 PF factors M (“autia”), Q4 (“frustration”), and Q1 (“exvia”). The SP of the α rhythm correlated with 16 PF factors Q3 (“self-control of behavior”), G (“strength of superEgo”), O (“hypothymia”), L (“protension”), and N (“shrewdness”). The SP of the β rhythm correlated with the OST scale “emotionality,” while that of the γ rhythm showed correlations with the 16 PF indices L (“protension”) and M (“autia”). Changes in the ratio of the α vs θ SPs correlated with the EPQ scale “neuroticism.” Thus, our data confirm the statement that a high individual variability of the results of a single (first in the series) neurofeedback session is to a great extent related to peculiarities of the individual psychological pattern of the subject. The limited availability of rhesus macaques through importation and the need for large numbers of them for use in biomedical research in this country have led to large- scale efforts to breed them domestically in captive groups. Since gene flow into the groups is usually restricted, consanguineous inbreeding can lead to inbreeding depression, which is characterized by increases in mortality, declines in fertility, and reductions in traits associated with physiological efficiency. For this reason, it is desirable to determine the level of inbreeding at which inbreeding depression occurs in rhesus macaques. I compared fertility, mortality, and the rate of weight gain in inbred and noninbred rhesus monkeys in three captive groups. There is no evidence of inbreeding depression in rhesus macaques whose inbreeding coefficients are ≤ 0.125, a level at which inbreeding depression is known to occur in some species.  相似文献

Social insect societies are considered to be composed of many extremely cooperative individuals. While workers are traditionally believed to behave altruistically, recent studies have revealed behaviors that are more selfish. One such example is intraspecific social parasitism, where workers invade conspecific colonies and produce male offspring that are reared by unrelated host workers. Such intraspecific parasitism has been reported in honeybees (Apis cerana, and A. florea) and “semi-wild” bumblebee colonies of Bombus terrestris. Here we report on intraspecific social parasitism by workers in “wild” colonies of the bumblebee B. deuteronymus. Three of the 11 B. deuteronymus colonies studied were invaded by non-natal workers, of which 75% became reproductive and produced 19% of the adult males. The invading non-natal workers produced significantly more males than resident natal workers and the non-natal brood was not discriminated against by the natal workers.  相似文献

We consider a previously unknown way of propagation of behavioural traditions in animal communities using hunting in ants as an example. We experimentally revealed that common litter dwelling ants Myrmica rubra effectively hunt jumping prey and the way the hunting behavioural pattern is distributed within ant colonies is rather sophisticated. Comparison of our results with those obtained on vertebrates enables us to suggest that “distributed social learning” plays an important role in spreading new traditions in animal communities: initial performances by a few carriers of an “at once and entirely” available behavioural pattern propagate this pattern among specimens which have only dormant “sketches” of it. Spread of these behaviours in populations is based on relatively simple forms of social learning such as social facilitation which underlies species’ predisposition to learn certain sequences of behavioural acts. To be triggered, carriers of dormant “sketches” of a relevant behavioural pattern should encounter performances of this pattern with sufficient frequency. We call this strategy triggering of dormant behavioural patterns. Integration of behaviour thus takes place not only at the individual level but at the population level as well.  相似文献

Agonistic behavior was studied longitudinally for 16 months in an intact family groups of captive emperor tamarins (Saguinus imperator subgrisescens) using methods from quantitative ethology and social network analysis. A motivational analysis of the components of agonistic display revealed the relative strength of each component along a continuum from strongly dominant to strongly subordinate. Tabulations of exchanges of strongly dominant and strongly subordinate components in interactions among the tamarins revealed an agonistic network (“dominance hierarchy”) that approached, but did not quite reach, the ideal state of a transitive order (“linear dominance hierarchy”). The frequency with which individual tamarins long called and scent marked was not closely correlated with their position (“dominance rank”) in the agonistic network. Instead, individuals undergoing change in status long called and scent marked frequently, irrespective of their rank.  相似文献

The relationship between individual genetic diversity and fitness-related traits are poorly understood in the wild. The availability of highly polymorphic molecular markers, such as microsatellites, has made research on this subject more feasible. We used three microsatellite-based measures of genetic diversity, individual heterozygosity H, mean d 2 and mean d 2 outbreeding to test for a relationship between individual genetic diversity and important fitness trait, juvenile survival, in a population of alpine marmots (Marmota marmota), after controlling for the effects of ecological, social and physiological parameters that potentially influence juvenile survival in marmots. Analyses were conducted on 158 juveniles, and revealed a positive association between juvenile survival and genetic diversity measured by mean H. No association was found with mean d 2 and with mean d 2 outbreeding. This suggests a fitness disadvantage to less heterozygous juveniles. The genetic diversity-fitness correlation (GDFC) was somewhat stronger during years with poor environmental conditions (i.e. wet summers). The stressful environmental conditions of this high mountain population might enhance inbreeding depression and make this association between genetic diversity and fitness detectable. Moreover the mating system, allowing extra pair copulation by occasional immigrants, as well as close inbreeding, favours a wide range of individual genetic diversity (mean H ranges from 0.125 to 1), which also may have facilitated the detection of the GDFC. The results further suggest that the observed GDFC is likely to be explained by the “local effect” hypothesis rather than by the “general effect” hypothesis.  相似文献

Recovery of Acropora palmata from its currently imperiled status depends on recruitment, a process which is poorly documented in existing Caribbean coral population studies. A. palmata is thought to be well adapted to proliferate through the recruitment of fragments resulting from physical disturbances, such as moderate intensity hurricanes. This study monitored fifteen 150 m2 fixed study plots on the upper Florida Keys fore-reef for asexual and sexual recruitment from 2004 to 2007. Between July and October 2005, 4 hurricanes passed by the Florida Keys, producing wind speeds on the reef tract of 23 to 33 m s−1. Surveys following the hurricanes documented an average loss of 52% estimated live tissue area within the study plots. The percentage of “branching” colonies in the population decreased from 67% to 42% while “remnant” colonies (isolated patches of tissue on standing skeleton) increased from 11% to 27%. Although some detached branches remained as loose fragments, more than 70% of the 380 fragments observed in the study plots were dead or rapidly losing tissue 3 weeks after Hurricane Dennis. Over the course of the study, only 27 fragments became attached to the substrate to form successful asexual recruits. Meanwhile, of the 18 new, small encrusting colonies that were observed in the study, only 2 were not attributable to asexual origin (i.e., remnant tissue from colonies or fragments previously observed) and are therefore possible sexual recruits. In summary, the 2005 hurricane season resulted in substantial loss of A. palmata from the upper Florida Keys fore-reef from a combination of physical removal and subsequent disease-like tissue mortality, and yielded few recruits of either sexual or asexual origin. Furthermore, the asexual and sexual fecundity of the remaining population is compromised for the near future due to the lack of branches (i.e., “asexual fecundity”) and overall loss of live tissue.  相似文献

A review of specimens and field notes of Carlos Olalla and his sons showed that they collected Saguinus tripartitus and Saguinus fuscicollis lagonotus at the same place on the right bank of the lower Rio Napo in Peru. Thus, these two forms are sympatric, although they probably occur in different habitats. Therefore, Saguinus tripartitus should be treated as a distinct species, not as a subspecies of Saguinus fuscicollis.  相似文献

Cotton-top tamarins [Saguinus (o.) oedipus,Callitrichidae] living in cooperatively breeding, mature families in a captive colony were given the chance to explore a new living area. The aim was to simulate choices of philopatry versus dispersion. Breeding adults tended to stay home, as did eldest sons and still-dependent young offspring, but eldest daughters tended to go prospecting. The latter also spent more time in the new area and did more looking around while there. This confirms impression of female dispersion gained from records of “evictions” of daughters by other family members. These findings agree with those from field study and show noteworthy parallels with an avian cooperative breeder, the Florida scrub jay, Aphelocoma coerulescens.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation may influence the genetic make-up and adaptability of endangered populations. To facilitate genetic monitoring of the endangered European ground squirrel (EGS), we analyzed 382 individuals from 16 populations in Central Europe, covering almost half of its natural range. We tested how fragmentation affects the genetic architecture of presumably selectively neutral (12 microsatellites) and non-neutral (the major histocompatibility class II DRB gene) loci. Spatial genetic analyses defined two groups of populations, “western” and “eastern”, with a significantly higher level of habitat fragmentation in the former group. The highly fragmented western populations had significantly lower genetic diversity in both types of markers. Only one allele of the DRB gene predominated in populations of the western group, while four alleles were evenly distributed across the eastern populations. Coefficient of inbreeding values (F IS) calculated from microsatellites were significantly higher in the western (0.27–0.79) than in eastern populations (−0.060–0.119). Inter-population differentiation was very high, but similar in both groups (western F ST = 0.23, eastern F ST = 0.25). The test of isolation by distance was significant for the whole dataset, as well as for the two groups analyzed separately. Comparison of genetic variability and structure on microsatellites and the DRB gene does not provide any evidence for contemporary selection on MHC genes. We suggest that genetic drift in small bottlenecked and fragmented populations may overact the role of balancing selection. Based on the resulting risk of inbreeding depression in the western populations, we support population management by crossbreeding between the western and eastern populations.  相似文献

The reef coral Montastraea annularis has been used in a wide range of investigations. Recently, it has been recognized as a complex of three species based on field observations of the variation in colony shape. These observations have also been confirmed by molecular methods as well as morphometrics on individual corallites in the colonies. This paper presents a new quantitative method for measuring overall colony shape based on geostatistics. Seventeen colonies collected from San Blas, Panama in 1995 and 1996 were examined using the Polhemus 3SPACE FASTRAK system to construct three-dimensional coordinates of the center of several hundred corallites in each colony. This method measures the larger bumps or “ridges” as well as the smaller bumps or “lumps” of the colonies. Variograms were then calculated for all the specimens and the lag distances and the values of the variogram were used in a multivariate statistical analysis. Overall, this method indicated that M. annularis and Montastaea faveolata overlap in their relative amount of bumpiness in colony shape while Montastraea franksi is distinct from the other two species. This method has implications for both the modern and fossil record of Montastraea as well as other organisms with similar shapes.  相似文献

 A small-scale, “no-use zone policy” has been implemented since 1992 at Eilat’s Coral Nature Reserve (Northern Red Sea). Six years later, the status of this closed-to-the-public reef area was compared to two nearby open-to-the-public sites, by evaluating populations of the scleractinian coral Stylophora pistillata in the strolling zone (0.5–1.5 m depth). Results from the open sites show that: (1) Live coral cover was three times lower than at the closed site; (2) numbers of small colonies (recruits) were significantly higher than in the closed site, while numbers of medium and large size colonies (geometric mean radius, >4.1 cm) per m2 were significantly lower; (3) maximum was almost half than that in the closed site (9.6 cm versus 16.7 cm); (4) average number of broken colonies was three times higher than in the closed site; (5) significantly fewer colonies were partially dead. The latter result may reflect senescence processes in the large colonies of the closed site. Although colony breakage is reduced, it appears that the “no-use zone” policy is not sufficient for protecting small reef areas. The intense exploitation of Eilat’s coral reef by the tourist industry requires’ in addition to the conventional protective measures, the initiation of novel management solutions such as reef restoration by sexual and asexual recruits.
