Damage caused by different slug species on above and below ground parts of young oilseed rape bordering on sown wildfower strips was studied. Slug densities and damage were recorded in the field and damage rates for each slug species were measured in the laboratory. Severe slug damage was observed in rape areas 1 m from the wildflower strips. Damage rates of slug species feeding above ground were distinctly higher than those feeding below ground. The estimated damage caused by above-ground feeding in all four study fields ranged between 72% and 89 % and was always distinctly higher than damage caused by below-ground feeding (11% to 28 %). The estimated damage caused by Arion lusitanicus above ground was between 54% and 69 %, followed by Deroceras reticulatum (3% to 26 %). Thus A. lusitanicus was responsible for the majority of damage in the rape crops studied.  相似文献

The nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita is a commercially available biocontrol agent against slugs. This product is especially interesting for use in organic farming, where products containing metaldehyde or carbamates cannot be used for controlling pest slugs. We investigated the potential of P. hermaphrodita for the control of the pest slugs Deroceras reticulatum and Arion lusitanicus. These two species are the most harmful slug pests in Switzerland. At different times of the year, we collected slug specimens of different weight and assessed their susceptibility to P. hermaphrodita in the laboratory. Batches of five slugs were subjected to five different doses of nematodes plus an untreated control and replicated three times. During six weeks, feeding and survival of the slugs were recorded. D. reticulatum was strongly affected by increasing nematode doses, irrespective of the slugs' body weight. In small specimens of A. lusitanicus, feeding and survival were strongly affected by the nematodes, while larger specimens remained almost unaffected. Because A. lusitanicus has an asynchronous development in Switzerland, it seems difficult to control the entire population with a single nematode application. To what extent nematodes will be used in practice for slug control depends on their effectivity against the pest slugs of major importance, on the longevity of the molluscicidal effect and on the price of nematodes.  相似文献

Methanol extracts of the plants Geranium robertianum, Lepidium sativum, Origanum vulgare, Salvia officinalis, Salvia pratensis, Saponaha officinalis, Thymus vulgaris, Trifolium repens and Valerianella locusta were produced and applied to cotyledons of 6–8 days old rape seedlings to investigate whether they can influence the feeding of the slug Arion lusitanicus on young rape. All plant extracts appeared to reduce slug feeding on rape to some extent, but only the extracts of Saponaria officinalis and V. locusta significantly deterred A. lusitanicus from feeding. The small effects of some extracts may be due to a poor extraction efficiency or an insufficient feeding inhibition capacity of these extracts.  相似文献

The efficacy of various chemicals as alternatives to antibiotics for the control of fireblight (Erwinia amylovora) on pear trees was tested. The chemicals were applied in two ways. In 1999 and 2000, preselected pear twigs (80–90% bloom stage) were sprayed once either preventively 1 day before inoculation or curatively one or three days after artificial inoculation with pathogen concentrations of 105 and 107cfu ml?1. In 2000 and 2001, whole trees were sprayed 2 and 4 days before artificial inoculation of the flowers. From the incidence of diseased flowers it appeared that Bion (50% benzothiadiazole) at 0.2 g litre?1 H2O and Aliette (80% fosetyl‐Al) at 2.5 g litre?1 H2O showed considerable preventive action by eliciting systemic acquired resistance mostly when they were applied in the whole trees. However the best control was achieved with the antibiotic Agrept (20% streptomycin) at 0.5 g litre?1 H2O. This showed both preventive and curative action. Kocide (77% copper hydroxide) at 0.9 g litre?1 H2O, Dentamet (citric acid in chelate) at 1.5 ml litre?1 H2O, Bactosan (an extract from the plant Pongamia pinnatd) at 3.0 g litre?1 H2O and Bion at 0.1 g litre?1 H2O, showed preventive action, but only when the inoculum concentration was low.  相似文献

Three potential chemical fumigants: carbonyl sulfide (COS), methyl iodide (MI) and sulfuryl fluoride (SF) were tested at selected dosages on lemons against California red scale (Aonidiella aurantii) and MI and COS were tested on nectarines against codling moth (Cydia pomonella). In nectarines, COS was tested at 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 mg litre?1, MI at 0, 10, 15, 20 and 25 mg litre?1. Both fumigants intensified nectarine peel color, delayed fruit softening, but did not alter overall fruit quality. COS at 80 mg litre?1 resulted in 87% codling moth mortality, but the fumigant dosage was insufficient to reach the desired probits 9 level (99.9968%). MI gave 100% codling moth mortality at 25 mg litre?1. Lemons were treated with MI at 0,10,20,40,60 mg litre?1, SF at 0,10,20,40, 80 mg litre?1 and COS at 0,20,40, 60 and 80 mg litre?1. MI gave 100% red scale mortality at ≥40 mg litre?1 but caused significant fruit injury. Conditioning lemons at 15°C for 3 days before MI fumigation lessened lemon phytotoxicity. Forced aeration at 3.5 standard litres per minute of lemons for 24 h following MI fumigation at 20 mg litre?1 significantly reduced phytotoxicity compared to 2 h postfumigation aeration after MI treatment. SF at ≥40 mg litre?1 gave 100% red scale mortality but resulted in commodity phytotoxicity. Lemons treated with the highest selected dose of 80 mg litre?1 COS gave only 87% kill of red scale, but failed to reach the desired probit 9 level.  相似文献

The spread of invasive species is an increasing problem world wide. The invasive slug Arion lusitanicus has spread to most parts of Europe, where it often is considered as a serious pest. There is a need for better knowledge of its ecophysiology to be able to predict the effect of climatic factors, such as temperature and humidity on the population dynamics and abundance. The aim of the present study was to assemble data on the water balance and drought tolerance of eggs and juveniles of A. lusitanicus. Both eggs and juveniles had little capacity to prevent evaporative water loss and lost water when the ambient humidity fell below 99.8 and 99.5%, respectively. The water conductance of the cuticle of juveniles was 242 μg cm−2 h−1 mmHg−1 and resembles that of other slug species. Both eggs and juveniles of A. lusitanicus tolerate a substantial water loss. There was no difference in water loss resistance between eggs and juveniles, but the eggs were slightly more tolerant to water loss than the juveniles. The percent water loss causing 50% mortality was 72% for the juveniles and 81% for the eggs. Despite A. lusitanicus’ tolerance of substantial water loss, its survival depends on humid habitats.  相似文献

In vitro plant regeneration was achieved from leaf explants of Plumbago rosea and Plumbago zeylanica on Murashige & Skoog (1962) medium supplemented with 1.5 mg litre?1 6‐benzylaminopurine, 0.25 mg litre?1 indole‐3‐acetic acid, 50 mg litre?1 adenine sulfate and 3% (w/v) sucrose. The shoot initials developed within 2–3 wk on the leaf margin as well as from the wounds of the leaf. High frequency shoot‐bud regeneration was achieved on similar medium in subsequent subcultures. The semi‐mature leaves produced more shoot‐buds as compared to the younger leaves. Mature leaves did not show any response for shoot bud initiation. More than 85% of the semi‐mature explants produced shoot‐buds per leaf explant within 4 wk of culture. Shoots rooted easily on medium having half‐strength basal Murashige & Skoog (1962) medium supplemented with 0.25 mg litre?1 indole‐3‐butyric acid and 2% (w/v) sucrose; 84–92% of the in vitro rooted plantlets survived in the greenhouse. The regenerated plantlets appeared morphologically similar to the mother plants. No variation was detected among the regenerated plants by the use of Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. This method might be useful for assessing plant improvement programmes.  相似文献

The slug Arion lusitanicus is an invasive species which has recently become established in many European countries and is considered a serious pest, both in agriculture and private gardens. The effect of temperature on growth rate, survival, egg developmental time and hatchability of the slug are reported. The growth rate was positively correlated with temperatures up to 20°C and A. lusitanicus continued (on average) to grow until they die. A model describing how growth depends on temperature was developed, and a field survey found that the predicted growth matched the observed with reasonable accuracy. This study confirms the assumption that A. lusitanicus die after egg laying. Free‐ranging A. lusitanicus has an annual life cycle, but our data show that slugs also possess the ability to live for up to 3 years. The egg developmental time was, like growth, positively correlated with temperature and was shortest at 20°C, but the optimum temperature for egg development, when regarded as the temperature with highest hatchability was found to be 10°C. In conclusion, this study has shown that growth and the life‐history traits, egg developmental time and hatchability, of A. lusitanicus are highly influenced by temperature. However, data also show that temperatures within the range 2–20°C did not influence survival rates to any large degree, and that A. lusitanicus can quickly adjust to changes in temperature. The study provides a number of basic parameters which contribute to the understanding of the population dynamics of A. lusitanicus.  相似文献

The daily activity of the slug Arion lusitanicus was studied using time‐lapse video analysis in the laboratory. Under constant temperature (18°C) and 16–h photoperiod, the activity of slugs was measured in half‐hourly periods as locomotor activity, feeding or resting. Track lengths were determined using image analysis. Locomotion of A. lusitanicus was greatest at 5:30, 1.5 h after sunrise, and at 20:30, 1 h after sunset; least locomotor activity occurred between 13:00 and 14:00. The mean distance travelled by A. lusitanicus in 24 h was 10.8 m. The largest slug was the most active and the smallest the least. Slugs spent 68% of 24 hours resting, mainly under artificial shelter traps, 27% in locomotion and 4% feeding. Feeding occurred mainly during the hours of dakness (76%). All categories of behaviour investigated varied greatly between individuals and also between times of day. Homing to artificial shelters and other roost sites was regularly observed within 24 h (41%), but decreased considerably thereafter. The behavioural patterns proved to be in agreement with those found in a previous field investigation and are therefore also discussed with a view to their importance in pest control.  相似文献

Predation on slugs, Arion lusitanicus (Mabille) and Deroceras reticulatum (Müller), and their eggs by the carabid beetles Pterostichus melanarius (Illiger) and Poecilus cupreus (L.) was investigated in the laboratory. Slugs of different size and slug eggs were offered to the beetles in petri dishes with and without several alternative prey. Pterostichus melanarius destroyed eggs of D. reticulatum and A. lusitanicus, with a clear preference for D. reticulatum eggs. The availability of some alternative prey types adversely affected feeding on D. reticulatum eggs by P. cupreus and feeding on A. lusitanicus eggs by P. melanarius. Yet consumption of D. reticulatum eggs by P. melanarius was not significantly influenced by any alternative prey. Only P. melanarius killed small D. reticulatum in the presence of alternative prey. This suggests that P. melanarius and P. cupreus may have the potential to reduce slug populations in the field by destroying slug eggs and, in the case of P. melanarius, killing freshly hatched slugs.  相似文献

In glasshouses practising monoculture of butterhead lettuce in Belgium, high densities of pin nematodes (Paratylenchus spp.) are frequently associated with reduced plant growth. Growers currently apply chemical soil disinfestation measures to manage this problem, although stricter phytosanitary regulations are forcing a shift towards integrated management. Efficient implementation of such management requires knowledge about the factors influencing nematode population dynamics, and the damage threshold for lettuce. The nematode populations in five Belgian glasshouses were monitored for at least 1 year by frequently soil sampling at 0–30 cm and 30–60 cm depth. An undescribed species of Paratylenchus was identified in all glasshouses based on morphological and molecular features. High nematode densities (>20,000 (100 ml soil)?1) occurred in winter and spring. Chemical soil disinfestation lowered these populations greatly, although up to 14% survived in the deeper soil layer. After soil steaming under negative pressure, no pin nematodes were found. After 2 months of black fallow pin nematode densities were reduced by 50%–76%. Lamb's lettuce, parsley and wild rocket were found to be poor hosts in a pot experiment, while reproduction factors (Pf/Pi) on lettuce cultivars varied between 1 and 3. In three experiments with butterhead lettuce ‘Cosmopolia’ in pots with a series of 9 or 10 densities of Paratylenchus sp. [up to 35,000 (100 ml soil)?1], no damage to lettuce heads was observed. However, root weight and root quality were reduced, and the corresponding damage thresholds were rather low [1,754 and 362 Paratylenchus sp. (100 ml soil)?1, respectively]. Management strategies such as crop rotation, soil disinfestation or fallow are recommended to avoid pin nematode population build‐up.  相似文献

Eight essential oil compounds were evaluated against the maize borer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), to determine their influence on oviposition and feeding behavior. Thymol was the most active compound against C. partellus when evaluated as an oviposition deterrent (ODI50 = 1.36 mg ml?1), an ovicide (LC50 = 2.06 mg ml?1), or a feeding deterrent (FI50 = 141.8 μg cm?2) in laboratory experiments. The results corroborated with greenhouse experiments, in which egg laying on maize plants was inhibited significantly when the treatment was 15 times the concentration used in the laboratory experiments. However, there was neither any correlation between oviposition deterrence and feeding inhibition, nor between oviposition deterrence and ovicidal action. Apparently, toxicity per se or ovicidal action does not play any role in choice of oviposition in C. partellus. This was more obvious when the efficacy of compounds was compared in greenhouse experiments where ODI values and number of eggs laid on the treated leaves did not differ significantly in choice and no‐choice situations. Apparently, toxicity plays an important role in predicting host plant choice, but behavioral response in terms of oviposition preference is independent of toxic action, particularly for non‐host toxins. Thus, the same compounds affecting oviposition behavior on the one hand and having ovicidal or feeding deterrent properties on the other could be useful in field situations in any area‐wide integrated pest management model.  相似文献

Three novel insecticides, pyriproxyfen, spinosad and tebufenozide, were evaluated for their effect on survival and reproduction of Chrysoperla carnea adults using two methods of exposure: direct contact and ingestion. Pyriproxyfen and tebufenozide proved to be harmless to adult survival, whereas spinosad 72 h after treatment reduced the number of adults by 39.8% and 87.2% in topical and ingestion treatment at the maximum concentration recommended (800 mg a.i. litre?1). Fecundity was not affected irrespective of the insecticide or time of application (before or after the onset of oviposition). Concerning fertility, only pyriproxyfen exerted a negative effect on hatching when the eggs were deposited by females treated by ingestion in the post‐oviposition period at the highest concentration tested (150 mg a.i. litre?1).  相似文献

In three field experiments, the rhabditid nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita was applied one or more times at the standard rate (3 × 109 ha?1) or half the standard rate to protect crops from slug damage under experimental conditions. Expt 1 was done in a field planted with the ornamental Polygonatum japonica. The treatments were: infective juveniles of the nematode at the standard field rate, metaldehyde pellets at the recommended field rate, and ioxynil (a herbicide with molluscicidal properties) at 90 mg m?2. The treatments were repeated every 2 wk. Arion ater agg. caused most of the damage to P. japonica. There were no significant differences in damage between treatments during the 3 wk after first application, but plants on plots treated with metaldehyde or nematodes had significantly less damage than plants on untreated plots in the fourth and fifth weeks. Expts 2 and 3 were done on the same site, the first with leaf beet and the second with lettuce. The treatments in these experiments were: nematodes applied to the planted area at the standard field rate 3 days prior to planting, with or without previous application of cow manure; nematodes at half standard rate applied twice, 6 days apart, to the planted area or to the surrounding area; metaldehyde pellets and iron phosphate pellets, both applied at the recommended rate to the planted area immediately after planting. In both experiments, the two chemical molluscicides and nematodes applied once to the planted area at the standard field rate without previous application of cow manure, or twice at half standard rate, were able to reduce slug damage. Nematodes applied after manure did not reduce slug damage. None of the treatments reduced the numbers of slugs contaminating the harvested plants. Slug populations were assessed by means of soil sampling before and after Expts 2 and 3. Only after Expt 3 was there a significant effect of treatment on slug numbers, with significantly fewer in metaldehyde treated plots than in untreated plots.  相似文献

Improving productivity of maize (Zea mays L.) and water use efficiency is of great significance for agriculture in Ethiopia. In this study, the effects of ridge‐furrow with film mulch cultivation were tested on maize yields in Melkassa, Ethiopia. Three field experiments (drip irrigation, furrow irrigation and rainfed) were conducted each with randomised complete block design with three replicates. The drip irrigation experiment was conducted in the dry season and constituted three film mulch methods (non‐mulch, transparent film mulch and black film mulch) with three irrigation levels (357, 435 and 515 mm). The furrow irrigation experiment was also conducted in the dry season and constituted two film mulches (non‐mulch and transparent film mulch) with three irrigation levels (484, 674 and 865 mm). The rainfed experiment was conducted in the rainy season and constituted three mulches (non‐mulch, transparent film mulch and black film mulch) with two farming methods (ridge‐furrow farming and flat farming). In the drip irrigation experiment, the highest maize yields (5.9 ± 0.6 t ha?1) and irrigation water use efficiency (9.6 ± 1 kg ha?1 mm?1) were recorded in the treatment using black film mulch with high irrigation, with increases of 68% and 68.4% compared to using non‐mulch treatment at that irrigation level. In the furrow irrigation experiment, maize yields and irrigation water use efficiency reached 7 (± 0.8) t ha?1 and 9.1 (± 1.9) kg ha?1 mm?1 in the treatment using transparent film mulch with medium irrigation (674 mm), with increases of 46% and 46.8% compared to that with non‐mulch treatment. In the rainfed experiment, the film mulch rather than farming method had positive effects on the maize yields and rainwater use efficiency. The average maize yield reached 8.5 (± 0.7) t ha?1 in the film mulch treatments, with an increase of 39% than using the non‐mulch treatment. Compared with that of non‐mulch treatment, the net income in the film mulch treatments increased by 94% in the furrow experiment and 31% in the rainfed experiment. Our results indicate that the ridge‐furrow with film mulch system can be recommended for water‐saving irrigation with low cost in dry seasons, and film mulch with flat farming can be recommended in rainy seasons for maize production in Ethiopia. This study provides strong evidence that maize productivity can be effectively improved in Ethiopia and other similar areas of the world using this simple and cost‐effective technology.  相似文献

The nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, a parasite of slugs, was cultured in vitro and applied as a drench in two outdoor mini‐plot field experiments to test the capacity of the nematode to protect Chinese cabbage seedlings and wheat seeds from damage by the field slug Deroceras reticulatum. The first experiment compared a single dose of nematodes (2 X 1010 ha‐1) with methiocarb pellets added at the recommended field rate (5.5 kg.product ha‐1 ) and untreated plots. Plots treated with either nematodes or methiocarb pellets had significantly less slug damage than untreated plots and, from the third week onwards, there was significantly less slug damage on plots treated with nematodes than on methiocarb‐treated plots. At the end of the experiment, 6 weeks after treatment, both slug numbers and biomass were significantly higher in untreated plots than in either methiocarb‐treated or nematode‐treated plots. In the second experiment, six nematode doses ranging from 1 X 10 8 to 2 X 1010 ha‐1 were compared with a standard rate application of methiocarb pellets and untreated plots. Plant protection improved with increasing nematode dose between 1 X108 and 8 X 108ha‐1, but showed little or no further improvement at higher doses. Plant protection similar to that given by methiocarb pellets was provided by nematode doses of 8 X 108 ha‐1 and above.  相似文献

Carvone has previously been found to highly inhibit its own production at concentrations above 50 mM during conversion of a diastereomeric mixture of (−)-carveol by whole cells of Rhodococcus erythropolis. Adaptation of the cells to the presence of increasing concentrations of carveol and carvone in n-dodecane prior to biotransformation proved successful in overcoming carvone inhibition. By adapting R. erythropolis cells for 197 h, an 8.3-fold increase in carvone production rate compared to non-adapted cells was achieved in an air-driven column reactor. After an incubation period of 268 h, a final carvone concentration of 1.03 M could be attained, together with high productivity [0.19 mg carvone h−1 (ml organic phase)−1] and high yield (0.96 g carvone g carveol−1).  相似文献

When crops are bred for resistance to herbivores, these herbivores are under strong selection pressure to overcome this resistance, which may result in the emergence of virulent biotypes. This is a growing problem for crop species attacked by aphids. The Nr‐gene in lettuce confers near‐complete resistance against the black currant‐lettuce aphid, Nasonovia ribisnigri (Mosely) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Since 2007, populations of N. ribisnigri have been reported in several locations in Europe to infest resistant lettuce varieties that possess the Nr‐gene. The objective of this study was to analyse the behaviour and level of virulence of several N. ribisnigri populations observed to have colonized Nr‐locus‐containing lettuce lines. We analysed the stylet penetration and feeding behaviour, and the performance of these N. ribisnigri populations on resistant and susceptible lettuce lines. Large variation in the degree of virulence to the Nr‐locus‐containing lettuce lines was found among populations of the Nr:1 biotype. The German population was highly virulent on the Nr‐containing resistant lettuce lines, and showed similar feeding behaviour and performance on both the susceptible and resistant lettuces. The French population from Paris was the second most virulent, though reproduction on the resistant lines was reduced. The French population from Perpignan and a population from Belgium, however, showed reduced performance and feeding rate on the resistant compared to the susceptible lettuces. The lettuce background in which the Nr‐gene is expressed influences the level of resistance to the various Nr:1 aphid populations, because the performance and feeding behaviour differed between the aphids on the cultivars (romaine lettuce) compared to the near‐isogenic lines (butterhead/iceberg lettuce). This study also shows that being able to feed on a plant not automatically implies that a population can successfully develop on that plant, because aphids showed phloem ingestion during the 8‐h recording period on resistant lettuce, but were not able to survive and reproduce on the same lettuce line.  相似文献

The study aimed to determine the optimum density of free‐living nematodes in feeding bighead carp, Aristichthys nobilis, larvae. In the first experiment, carp stocked at 25 larvae L?1 were fed varying levels of nematodes (50, 75, 100, 125 and 150 per ml) twice a day for 21 days from the start of exogenous feeding. Final body weight was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in larvae fed 125 and 150 nematodes per ml than in those fed 50 and 75 per ml, but survival was low (61.8 and 63.6%, respectively). Survival rate was highest in larvae fed 100 nematodes ml?1 (81.3%). Carcass analysis showed that larvae fed 125 and 150 nematodes ml?1 had significantly lower body protein and higher body lipid than those fed other nematode densities. Carcass ash was similar for larvae fed 50–100 nematodes ml?1 but it decreased significantly at the higher nematode densities. Carp larvae in a subsequent experiment were given 50, 75 and 100 nematodes ml?1 per feeding. Newly hatched Artemia was the control feed. Nematode consumption and growth of the larvae were determined. Larvae were sampled at intervals of 2–4 days and the nematodes in the gut were counted and measured. At each nematode density, the number of nematodes present in the gut of the larvae increased significantly with time. At each sampling day, the number of nematodes in the gut did not differ significantly among treatments (P > 0.05) although it tended to increase with nematode density at day 2 and day 4 but decrease at day 7 onward. The carp larvae consumed significantly shorter nematodes on day 2 and day 4 than on the succeeding sampling days regardless of nematode density. However, the length of nematodes in the gut of the larvae did not differ significantly among the nematode densities. The final body weight of larvae increased with increasing nematode density. The body weight of larvae fed 100 nematodes ml?1 did not differ significantly from that of larvae given Artemia nauplii. Results show that bighead carp larvae should be fed 100 free‐living nematodes per ml at each feeding time.  相似文献

Dandelion is a common Asteraceae species that populates disturbed sites and gaps within swards where it becomes an important competitor of grasses. The natural control against dandelion includes seedling predation, with slugs, particularly Arion lusitanicus, being the most important in the Czech Republic. However, the study of slug seedling consumption is difficult because naturally established seedlings are not always available. Therefore, we developed a method of exposing laboratory‐grown seedlings as bait for slug predation. Dandelion seeds were sown in plastic cups containing a bottom layer of moist substrate. The emerged seedlings were thinned to 20 and displayed in an open area. During 2008–2010, the seedling baits were placed at 15 sites at 1 month intervals throughout the dandelion vegetative season, in parallel with plasticine baits that monitored slug feeding activity. For each 1 month interval, seedling survival was observed for a period of 8 days, and the estimated time to death was calculated; the percentage of surviving seedlings was then recorded. This method of seedling presentation demonstrated that local and temporal variation in seedling survival is correlated with slug feeding activity. The advantage of this technique is that the seedlings in baits may be presented at any place and time, as required by the experimental design; however, we found that the estimated time to seedling death was shorter for the exposed baits than for the naturally established seedlings. The method is suitable for the study of plant species other than dandelion, and also for aims other than the study of spatiotemporal trends in seedling consumption by slugs.  相似文献
