The effects of the configuration and temperature on the Young’s modulus of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) have been studied using molecular dynamics simulations. For the DREIDING force field under ambient temperatures, increasing the number of monomers significantly increases the modulus of isotactic and syndiotactic PMMA while the isotactic form has a greater modulus. The effects of temperature on the modulus of isotactic PMMA have been simulated using the DREIDING, AMBER, and OPLS force fields. All these force fields predict the effects of temperature on the modulus from 200 to 350 K that are in close agreement with experimental values, while at higher temperatures the moduli are greater than those measured. The glass transition temperature determined by the force fields, based on the variation of the modulus with temperature, is greater than the experimental values, but when obtained from a plot of the volume as a function of the temperature, there is closer agreement. The Young’s moduli calculated in this study are in closer agreement to the experimental data than those reported by previous simulations.  相似文献

Soluplus® is a novel amphiphilic polymer that has been shown to enhance the solubility and drug dissolution rate of poorly soluble drugs. However, there still is a lack of information regarding the physical mechanical properties of Soluplus® with addition of the plasticizers. This study characterized the mechanical properties of Soluplus® with four different plasticizers. The plasticizers selected were polyethylene glycol 6, triethyl citrate, propylene glycol, and glycerin; they were studied at three different levels (15%, 20%, and 25% w/w). The effects of these plasticizers on the glass transition temperature, tensile strength, percent elongation, and Young’s modulus of free films made from Soluplus® were measured and the toughness and ratio of tensile strength to Young’s modulus were calculated. These results showed these four plasticizers are capable to plasticizing Soluplus® as indicated by the glass transition temperature lowering, tensile strength, and Young’s modulus while increasing the percent elongation and film toughness. Among the plasticizers tested, polyethylene glycol 6 showed greatest changed in the mechanical properties studied.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the physical and mechanical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes/poly(ethylene oxide) nanocomposites. The effects of nanotube atomic structure, diameter, and volume fraction on the polymer density distribution, polymer atom distribution, stress–strain curves of nanocomposites and Young’s, and shear moduli of single-walled carbon nanotubes/poly(ethylene oxide) nanocomposites are explored. It is shown that the density of polymer, surrounding the nanotube surface, has a peak near the nanotube surface. However, increasing distance leads to dropping it to the value near the density of pure polymer. It is seen that for armchair nanotubes, the average polymer atoms distances from the single-walled carbon nanotubes are larger than the polymer atom distance from zigzag nanotubes. It further is shown that zigzag nanotubes are better candidates to reinforce poly (ethylene oxide) than their armchair counterparts.  相似文献

A series of graphene (GR) pull-out simulations based on molecular dynamics (MD) were carried out to investigate the interfacial mechanical properties between GR and a polymer matrix (polyethylene: PE). The effects of pull-out velocity, number of vacancy defect in GR and temperature on the interfacial mechanical properties of a GR/PE nanocomposite system were explored. The obtained results showed that the pull-out velocity and the temperature have significant influences on the interfacial mechanical properties for a perfect GR. Moderate vacancy defects in GR can effectively enhance the interfacial mechanical properties in GR-based polymer nanocomposites.  相似文献

Estimating the Young’s modulus of a structure in the nanometer size range is a difficult task. The reliable determination of this parameter is, however, important in both basic and applied research. In this study, by combining molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and continuum shell theory, we designed a new approach to determining the Young’s modulus values of different spherical fullerenes. The results indicate that the Young’s modulus values of fullerene molecules decrease nonlinearly with increasing molecule size and understandably tend to the Young’s modulus of an ideal flat graphene sheet at large molecular radii. To the best of our knowledge, this is first time that a combined atomistic–continuum method which can predict the Young’s modulus values of fullerene molecules with high precision has been reported.  相似文献

The effect of defect locations on the mechanical properties of armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs) and the various configurations of nitrogen (N) doping on the mechanical properties of AGNRs were examined using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The variation of the Young’s modulus (YM) and the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of pyridinic-N, graphitic-N, and pyrrolic-N by increasing the concentration of N doping was investigated. The results of MD simulations show that the defect location has a significant effect on the UTS and failure strain (FS) of AGNRs in both vertical and horizontal directions. In the horizontal direction, variations of the UTS and FS are lower than in the vertical direction. On the other hand, the variations of the YM is almost similar in vertical and horizontal directions. The results of this work indicate that the UTS and FS of AGNRs are more sensitive than the YM of AGNRs for different defect directions. Pyridinic-N improves the mechanical properties of the defective AGNR and performs better YM and UTS values than the graphitic-N. Substitution N atoms, which are located at the defective sites and/or at the edges of AGNRs, are mechanically more favorable. Pyrrolic-N configuration has the lowest mechanical properties among the other configurations. Furthermore, pyrrolic-N with Stone-Wales-1 (SW-1) type of defect has higher mechanical properties than pyrrolic-N with Stone-Wales-2 (SW-2) type of defect.  相似文献

The equilibrium structure, elastic constants Cij and thermodynamic functions of cubic titanium nitride (TiN) were calculated within the temperature range of 0–3100 K and under a pressure range 0–60 GPa. Properties were computed using the generalised gradient approximations (GGA) exchange-correlation functional. Calculated mechanical properties (Elastic constants, Young’s modulus and shear modulus) and phonon spectra of TiN obtained via robust DFT-QHA algorithm, were generally in a good agreement with available experimental and theoretical analogous values. In particular, a well-examined quasi-harmonic approximation method implemented in the Gibbs2 code is utilised herein to provide accurate estimation of thermal expansion coefficients, entropies, heat capacity values (at different combinations of temperature/volume/pressure) and Debye’s temperature. Parameters calculated herein shall be useful to elucidate the superior performance of TiN at harsh operational conditions encompassing elevated temperatures and pressures pertinent to cutting machineries and surface coatings.  相似文献

Determining the solid–liquid phase transition point by conventional molecular dynamics (MD) simulations is difficult because of the tendency of the system to get trapped in local minimum energy states at low temperatures and hysteresis during cooling and heating cycles. The replica exchange method, used in performing many MD simulations of the system at different temperature conditions simultaneously and performs exchanges of these temperatures at certain intervals, has been introduced as a tool to overcome this local-minimum problem. However, around the phase transition temperature, a greater number of different temperatures are required to adequately find the phase transition point. In addition, the number of different temperature values increases when treating larger systems resulting in huge computation times. We propose a computational acceleration of the replica exchange MD simulation on graphics processing units (GPUs) in studying first-order solid–liquid phase transitions of Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluids. The phase transition temperature for a 108-atom LJ fluid has been calculated to validate our new code. The result corresponds with that of a previous study using multicanonical ensemble. The computational speed is measured for various GPU-cluster sizes. A peak performance of 196.3 GFlops with one GPU and 8.13 TFlops with 64 GPUs is achieved.  相似文献

Metal oxides, as one of the most promising flame retardant additives, improve the fire retardant and the thermal stability properties of polymers. In the present study, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on the united atom model were applied to study the effect of alumina nanoparticles on the density, thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and thermal diffusivity of isotactic poly(methyl methacrylate) (is-PMMA). Thermal diffusivity of PMMA and PMMA/alumina nanocomposite were investigated through calculating thermal conductivity, density and heat capacity in the range of 300–700?K. Heat capacity can be calculated using fluctuations properties of energy. Thermal conductivity was calculated through the nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulation by Fourier’s law approach. Our results show that the addition of alumina nanoparticles decreases the heat capacity and increases the glass transition temperature (Tg), thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of the PMMA. Therefore, the addition of alumina nanoparticles to PMMA improves the fire retardancy of the polymer. In addition, we illustrate the links between the intermolecular and bulk properties of PMMA in the presence of the alumina nanoparticles.  相似文献

A molecular modeling strategy is proposed to describe the temperature (T) dependence of solubility parameter (δ) for the amorphous polymers which exhibit glass-rubber transition behavior. The commercial forcefield "COMPASS" is used to support the atomistic simulations of the polymer. The temperature dependence behavior of δ for the polymer is modeled by running molecular dynamics (MD) simulation at temperatures ranging from 250 up to 650 K. Comparing the MD predicted δ value at 298 K and the glass transition temperature (T(g)) of the polymer determined from δ-T curve with the experimental value confirm the accuracy of our method. The MD modeled relationship between δ and T agrees well with the previous theoretical works. We also observe the specific volume (v), cohesive energy (U(coh)), cohesive energy density (E(CED)) and δ shows a similar temperature dependence characteristics and a drastic change around the T(g). Meanwhile, the applications of δ and its temperature dependence property are addressed and discussed.  相似文献

Interactions between cells and microenvironments are essential to cellular functions such as survival, exocytosis and differentiation. Cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix (ECM) evokes a variety of biophysical changes in cellular organization, including modification of the cytoskeleton and plasma membrane. In fact, the cytoskeleton and plasma membrane are structures that mediate adherent contacts with the ECM; therefore, they are closely correlated. Considering that the mechanical properties of the cell could be affected by cell adhesion-induced changes in the cytoskeleton, the purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the ECM on the elastic properties of fixed macrophage cells using atomic force microscopy. The results showed that there was an increase (~50 %) in the Young’s modulus of macrophages adhered to an ECM-coated substrate as compared with an uncoated glass substrate. In addition, cytochalasin D-treated cells had a 1.8-fold reduction of the Young’s modulus of the cells, indicating the contribution of the actin cytoskeleton to the elastic properties of the cell. Our findings show that cell adhesion influences the mechanical properties of the plasma membrane, providing new information toward understanding the influence of the ECM on elastic alterations of macrophage cell membranes.  相似文献

Self-consistent-charge density-functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) approximated method was employed to investigate the structural, mechanical and electronic properties of the zigzag and armchair nano-fibriform silica (SNTs) and their outer surface organic modified derivatives (MSNTs) with internal radii in the range of 8 to 36 Å. The strain energy curves showed that the nanotubes structures are energetically more stable compared to the respective sheet structures. External hydroxyl dihedral angles in silica nanotubes have small influence, about 0.5 meV.atom?1, in the strain energy curve tendency of those materials favoring the zigzag chirality. The chemical modification of outer surface of SNTs by dimethyl silane group affects their relative stability favoring the armchair chirality in approximately 2 meV.atom?1. MSNTs have axial elastic constants, Young’s moduli, determined at the harmonic approximation, around 100 GPa smaller than the respective SNTs. The Young’s moduli of zigzag and armchair SNTs are in the range of 150–195 GPa and 232–260 GPa, respectively. And for the zigzag and armchair MSNTs these values are in the range of 77–89 and 110–140 GPa, respectively. The SNTs and MSNTs were characterized as insulators with band gaps around 8–10 eV.

Styrene-butadiene rubber is a copolymer widely used in making car tires and has excellent abrasion resistance. The Young’s modulus and tribology of pure styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) polymer and carbon nanotube reinforced polymer composites have been investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The mechanism of enhanced tribology properties using carbon nanotube has been studied and discussed. The obtained Young’s modulus shows the enhancement in mechanical properties of SBR polymer when carbon nanotubes are used as reinforcement. The concentration, temperature and velocity profiles, radial distribution function, frictional stresses, and cohesive energy density are calculated and analyzed in detail. The Young’s modulus of SBR matrix increases about 29.16% in the presence of the 5% CNT. The atom movement velocity and average cohesive energy density in the friction area of pure SBR matrix was found to be more than that of the CNT/SBR composite.

The structural, elastic, elastic anisotropy and electronic properties of ferroelectric SbSI and paraelectric SbSI, SbSeI and SbTeI crystals were computed using the local density approximation with first-principle calculations, based on density functional theory. The independent elastic constants of SbXI compounds were computed and the results reveal that they are mechanically stable. Some polycrystalline quantities such as bulk modulus, shear modulus, acoustic velocities, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, elastic anisotropy and elastic Debye temperatures of these compounds were derived from computed elastic constants. Energy band structures show that these compounds have an indirect band gap. The electronic charge distribution and partial density of states of SbXI compounds indicate that the Sb-X bond is typically covalent with a strong hybridization as well as Sb-I compounds that have strong ionic character. The results obtained were compared with experimentally measured values and other theoretical data.  相似文献

Polystyrene (PS) composites reinforced with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNs) with various weight ratios were fabricated by casting and vacuum-drying mixtures of PS/N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution and TOCN/DMF dispersion. TOCNs of 3 to 4 nm width were dispersed homogeneously at the individual nanofibril level in the PS matrix, such that the TOCN/PS nanocomposite films exhibited high optical transparencies and their tensile strengths, elastic moduli, and thermal dimensional stabilities increased with increasing TOCN content. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the storage modulus of the TOCN/PS films increased significantly with TOCN content above the glass-transition temperature of PS by the formation of an interfibrillar network structure of TOCNs in the PS matrix, based on percolation theory. The outstanding and effective polymer reinforcement by TOCNs results from their high aspect ratio, high crystallinity, and nanodispersibility in the PS matrix.  相似文献

Silicene has been proven to be a promising material with attractive electronic properties. During the synthesis of silicene, structural defects such as edge crack are likely to be generated and such defects in silicene have impacts on its properties. Herein, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the mechanical properties of the armchair silicene nanoribbons (ASiNRs) with edge cracks. Our results showed that the mechanical properties of the ASiNRs decrease because of the existence of edge crack. Both the pristine ASiNRs and the ASiNRs with edge cracks show brittle fracture behaviours. The crack length plays an important role in determining the critical strain and fracture strength of the ASiNRs. Moreover, we investigated the effects of strain rate and temperature on the mechanical properties of the ASiNRs with edge cracks. We observed that the increasing strain rate increases the critical strain and fracture strength while decreasing the Young’s modulus. Low-strain rates also changes the expanded directions of cracks in the ASiNRs. We also found that the increasing temperature could significantly decrease the mechanical properties of the ASiNRs with edge cracks.  相似文献

The whole thigh muscles are covered with the fascia lata, which could have morphological and mechanical features that match the underlying muscles’ functions. In this study, we investigated the morphological and elastic properties of the human fascia lata taken from four (anterior, medial, lateral, and posterior) sites on the thigh of 17 legs of 12 cadavers (6 males and 6 females, 75–92 years). The thickness of the fascia lata was determined with a caliper. The interwoven collagen fiber’s directions were measured and classified into longitudinal, transverse, and diagonal in two opposing directions, relative to the thigh. Tensile strength test along the longitudinal and transverse directions was performed, and the stiffness, Young’s modulus, and hysteresis were determined. Fascia lata at the lateral site (0.8 ± 0.2 mm) was significantly thicker compared to other sites (0.2–0.3 mm). Fiber’s directions showed substantial variability among sites, and longitudinally directed fibers were higher in proportion (28–32%) than those in other directions (20–27%) at all sites except for the posterior site. The stiffness and Young’s modulus in the longitudinal direction (20–283 N/mm; 71.6–275.9 MPa, highest at the lateral site) were significantly higher than in the transverse direction (3–16 N/mm; 3.2–41.9 MPa, lowest at the lateral site). At the medial site, the proportion of the transversely directed fibers was higher in females than males, with higher stiffness and Young’s modulus thereof. The present study shows that the fascia lata possesses site- and gender-dependence of the morphological characteristics and elastic properties.  相似文献

Viruses can be described as biological objects composed mainly of two parts: a stiff protein shell called a capsid, and a core inside the capsid containing the nucleic acid and liquid. In many double-stranded DNA bacterial viruses (aka phage), the volume ratio between the liquid and the encapsidated DNA is approximately 1:1. Due to the dominant DNA hydration force, water strongly mediates the interaction between the packaged DNA strands. Therefore, water that hydrates the DNA plays an important role in nanoindentation experiments of DNA-filled viral capsids. Nanoindentation measurements allow us to gain further insight into the nature of the hydration and electrostatic interactions between the DNA strands. With this motivation, a continuum-based numerical model for simulating the nanoindentation response of DNA-filled viral capsids is proposed here. The viral capsid is modeled as large- strain isotropic hyper-elastic material, whereas porous elasticity is adopted to capture the mechanical response of the filled viral capsid. The voids inside the viral capsid are assumed to be filled with liquid, which is modeled as a homogenous incompressible fluid. The motion of a fluid flowing through the porous medium upon capsid indentation is modeled using Darcy’s law, describing the flow of fluid through a porous medium. The nanoindentation response is simulated using three-dimensional finite element analysis and the simulations are performed using the finite element code Abaqus. Force-indentation curves for empty, partially and completely DNA-filled capsids are directly compared to the experimental data for bacteriophage λ. Material parameters such as Young’s modulus, shear modulus, and bulk modulus are determined by comparing computed force-indentation curves to the data from the atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments. Predictions are made for pressure distribution inside the capsid, as well as the fluid volume ratio variation during the indentation test.  相似文献

Stress shielding-related bone loss occurs after total hip arthroplasty because the stiffness of metallic implants differs from that of the host femur. Although reducing stem stiffness can ameliorate the bone resorption, it increases stress at the bone–implant interface and can inhibit fixation. To overcome this complication, a novel cementless stem with a gradient in Young’s modulus was developed using Ti-33.6Nb-4Sn (TNS) alloy. Local heat treatment applied at the neck region for increasing its strength resulted in a gradual decrease in Young’s modulus from the proximal to the distal end, from 82.1 to 51.0 GPa as calculated by a heat transfer simulation. The Young’s modulus gradient did not induce the excessive interface stress which may cause the surface debonding. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate bone remodeling with the TNS stem using a strain-adaptive bone remodeling simulation based on finite element analysis. Our predictions showed that, for the TNS stem, bone reduction in the calcar region (Gruen zone 7) would be 13.6% at 2 years, 29.0% at 5 years, and 45.8% at 10 years postoperatively. At 10 years, the bone mineral density for the TNS stem would be 42.6% higher than that for the similar Ti-6Al-4V alloy stem. The stress–strength ratio would be lower for the TNS stem than for the Ti-6Al-4V stem. These results suggest that although proximal bone loss cannot be eliminated completely, the TNS stem with a Young’s modulus gradient may have bone-preserving effects and sufficient stem strength, without the excessive interface stress.  相似文献

Nanocomposite films were prepared by the addition of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) eventually surfactant modified (s-CNC) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles in the polylactic acid (PLA) matrix using melt extrusion followed by a film formation process. Multifunctional composite materials were investigated in terms of morphological, mechanical, thermal and antibacterial response. The nanocomposite films maintained the transparency properties of the PLA matrix. Thermal analysis showed increased values of crystallinity in the nanocomposites, more evident in the s-CNC based formulations that had the highest tensile Young modulus. The presence of surfactant favoured the dispersion of cellulose nanocrystals in the polymer matrix and the nucleation effect was remarkably enhanced. Moreover, an antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli cells was detected for ternary systems, suggesting that these novel nanocomposites may offer good perspectives for food packaging applications which require an antibacterial effect constant over time.  相似文献
