Abstract 1. When offered a choice, female diamondback moths (Plutella xylostella) oviposited more eggs on plants with non‐parasitised conspecific larvae than on plants with parasitised larvae. 2. The leaf area consumed by parasitised larvae was significantly lower than that by non‐parasitised larvae. However, this quantitative difference in larval damage did not explain the female’s ability to discriminate between plants with parasitised and non‐parasitised larvae, as females showed an equal oviposition preference for plants infested by higher or lower densities of non‐parasitised larvae. 3. Pupal weight and duration of the larval stage of P. xylostella were independent of whether larvae were reared on plants that were previously infested by either non‐parasitised or parasitised larvae. 4. The larval parasitoid Cotesia vestalis did not distinguish between plants infested by non‐parasitised larvae and plants infested by larvae that had already been parasitised by conspecific wasps. 5. Based on these data, it can be concluded that the moth oviposition preference for plants infested by non‐parasitised conspecifics relative to plants infested by parasitised conspecifics was not explained by plant quality or by the attractiveness of plants towards wasps. It is hypothesised that one of the reasons for this preference is avoidance of plants where a relatively high risk of parasitism is expected due to the emergence of parasitoids from the parasitised host larvae.  相似文献

Selection of oviposition sites has direct influence on female fitness. Differences in offspring survival among sites should favour females to select oviposition sites with the highest survival. Golden egg bug females ( Phyllomorpha laciniata; Coreidae, Heteroptera) use conspecifics as oviposition substrates. Most eggs are laid on the back of the bug but they can be found on all body parts. Females never carry their own eggs, and males commonly carry eggs received without copulation with the donor. We examined differences in egg survival relative to paternity to the egg, host sex and body size and attachment of an egg on a host's body in the field. We also studied which bugs received eggs. Egg loss was surprisingly common: 30–80% of recaptured individuals lost eggs during a six-day period. Unexpectedly, host's paternity to the eggs did not affect egg survival. Also, egg loss did not differ among hosts in respect to other parameters studied. Males received more eggs than females, but survival of the eggs was not better on a male's back than on a female's back. Since egg loss is common in the golden egg bug, we suggest that female oviposition strategy to lay eggs on conspecifics is not perfect. This is due to active behaviour of potential hosts (for example, rejected oviposition attempts) or lack of suitable oviposition substrates (conspecifics) in the field. Since eggs do not survive unless carried, females may be acting opportunistically, doing the best job possible by laying eggs on available conspecifics.  相似文献

Female insects are expected to choose oviposition sites that have the best conditions for offspring development and survival. Natural enemies, such as predators and parasitoids, may have a strong influence on the selection of oviposition substrates by phytophagous insects. The golden egg bug, Phyllomorpha laciniata (Villers) (Heteroptera: Coreidae) has an unusual reproductive strategy. Females mainly use conspecifics, both males and other females, as egg-laying substrates, but occasionally they oviposit on plants as well. Survival of the eggs is higher when eggs are carried by conspecifics than when they are laid on plants, due to predation and parasitism. We investigated egg-laying behavior in the forced presence of the egg parasitoid Gryon bolivari (Giard) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae). Specifically, we studied whether females provide egg protection by avoiding oviposition under the risk of egg parasitization. We expected a lower oviposition rate under parasitoid presence, and the eggs, if any, to be placed preferably on conspecifics and not on plants, thus ensuring higher survival of the progeny. The results show that P. laciniata 's egg-laying rate was lower when they were enclosed with parasitoids than when parasitoids were absent, especially when plants were the only substrate to oviposit on. Moreover, females showed strong preference for laying eggs on conspecifics rather than on plants. Egg-laying in P. laciniata appears to be not only influenced by the availability of conspecifics, but also by the presence of egg parasitoids. This indicates that females may be able to detect G. bolivari and avoid oviposition when parasitoids are present. We discuss the possibility of conspecifics as enemy-free space.  相似文献

Animals often select oviposition sites to minimize the predation risk for eggs and juveniles, which are more vulnerable to predation than adults. When females produce eggs in clusters, the eggs and juveniles are likely to suffer from cannibalism. Although cannibalism among siblings is known to be lower than among non-siblings, there have been few investigations into the possibility that females select oviposition sites that reduce the risk of cannibalism for the offspring. To test this possibility, we examined oviposition preference by adult females of the predatory mite Gynaeseius liturivorus in response to the presence of her own eggs and to eggs of other females, offering plastic discs as oviposition substrates. Although females did not clearly show a preference for plastic discs on which they had oviposited, they avoided plastic discs on which other females had oviposited. When eggs of other females were artificially placed on clean plastic discs, adult female mites avoided these discs, suggesting that the eggs were used as cues for oviposition preference. Cannibalism among juvenile siblings was lower than among non-siblings. These observations show that adult females and juveniles of G. liturivorus discriminate kin relationships among conspecific individuals. Therefore, oviposition preference by adult female G. liturivorus may lead to the reduced risk of cannibalism among offspring.  相似文献

A variety of natural and artificial substrates were tested for their suitability as oviposition sites for the predatory anthocorid bug Orius insidiosus. The bugs oviposited into models of beans constructed from Parafilm, but none of the eggs laid into these models hatched. In choice tests, beans stems were preferred to both bean pods and potato sprouts. Hatching rates at 100% r.h. were highest (59%) for bean pods and significantly lower for both potato sprouts (39%) and bean stems (29%). At 60% r.h., hatching rates for bean pods (39%), bean stems (34%) and potato sprouts (33%) were similar. At 30% r.h. hatching rates for all three substrates were less than 15%. The results suggest that bean stems can be used successfully as an alternative to bean pods for the mass rearing of these biological control agents.  相似文献

We investigated the additive, dominance and epistatic genetic effects underlying differentiation in oviposition preference between two populations of the seed beetle Acanthoscelides obtectus evolved in the laboratory for 102 generations on bean and chickpea seeds. We reared and tested females on each of two host legumes. The populations differed in mean oviposition preference; the preference for chickpea was stronger in population reared on the chickpea (C) than in population maintained on common bean (P). Observations in the parental populations indicated that females tend to prefer ovipositioning their eggs on the seeds they have already experienced. The patterns of the means in each of the parental populations and 12 types of hybrids (two F(1), two F(2) and eight backcrosses) indicated that population differences in oviposition preference from both rearing hosts could be explained by nonadditive genetic effects. Statistically detectable additive and dominance genetic effects were observed in the most parsimonious model only when females were reared on the chickpea. The most parsimonious models on both rearing hosts suggested a contribution of negative additive x additive epistasis to the divergence of oviposition preference between the P and C populations. This indicates a positive effect of epistasis on the performance of the second generations of hybrids.  相似文献

Female golden egg bugs show unique flexibility in their oviposition behavior. Females can lay eggs on plants, where they are leftunattended, or on the back of conspecifics, where they remainuntil hatching. In this article we show that eggs have greatersurvival rates when carried by an adult than when laid on plants. The main causes of egg mortality are predators and a parasitoidwasp. Our results suggest that, although predation pressureis similar, fewer eggs are attacked by parasitoid wasps whencarried by an adult than when laid on plants. In addition,we show that, when given a choice, females prefer to lay eggson the backs of conspecifics than on plants. Thus, female ovipositionchoice is adaptive and minimizes individual offspring mortality. The factors that may maintain such behavioral variation in current populations are discussed.  相似文献

Trioza eugeniae oviposited significantly more eggs on Syzygium paniculatum leaves free of eggs compared to leaves with pre-existing eggs in a choice experiment, suggesting that females modify oviposition based on cues associated with the presence of eggs. In separate experiments, females avoided ovipositing on parts of leaves where eggs were present, but readily oviposited on areas of the same leaf without eggs. Epideictic pheromones are apparently not used by this species because females readily oviposited on areas of a leaf from which eggs had previously been removed. Females laid 57% of all their eggs along the margins of normal leaves, but also oviposited on artificial margins produced by cutting the leaves. The preference for natural margins over artificial margins was eliminated when the entire margin was coated with an antitranspirant compound to mask the damaged edge. These studies show that ovipositing psyllids respond both to the presence of eggs and to the suitability of the substrate.  相似文献

We evaluated the possibility of using the eggs laid out of host to rear Exorista larvarum (L.) (Diptera: Tachinidae), a larval parasitoid of Lepidoptera, on artificial media. In a first experiment, eggs oviposited on a plastic sheet (either by inexperienced or experienced females) showed the same in vitro hatching capability as those removed from the larvae of the factitious host Galleria mellonella L. Subsequently, eggs laid on the host integument or out of host, either by inexperienced or experienced females, were removed from the oviposition substrate and placed on a skimmed milkbased artificial medium. The percentages of hatched eggs, of puparia and adults, as well as the puparial weights did not differ significantly among the three treatments. These findings suggested that E. larvarum may be successfully reared in vitro with a total exclusion of the host insect. In a further test, no difference for the in vitro hatching time was found between the eggs oviposited either on a plastic sheet or on G. mellonella larvae in the same length of time (60 min). This result suggested that at oviposition the out-of-host eggs were unincubated, similarly to those that had been laid on the host larvae.  相似文献

The tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is considered to be a major pest that damages tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L; Solanaceae) crops in South American, European, and Mediterranean countries. This insect species is polyphagous (i.e., feeds on many types of food); hence, it could also develop on other cultivated host plants, principally solanaceous plants, such as potato (S. tuberosum L.; Solanaceae) and eggplant (S. melongena L.; Solanaceae). Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that host plant choice by adult T. absoluta is influenced by plant volatile organic compounds and larval host plant experience. One tomato cultivar (cv.) ‘Moneymaker’ and three potato cv. ‘Charlotte’ ‘Bintje,’ and ‘Nicola’ were tested. Using a flying tunnel, we observed that females reared on tomato preferred flying toward tomato and, to a lesser extent, potato cv. ‘Charlotte.’ These preferences might be explained by the high release of terpenes by these two plants. When conducting oviposition choice assays, we found no preference between tomato and potato in the number of eggs laid by females that had been previously reared on either host plant. This study indicates that the host finding behavior of T. absoluta is mediated by solanaceous volatiles, while oviposition behavior appears to depend on additional stimuli. These results provide baseline information for use in the development of new control strategies against T. absoluta using semiochemicals and plant breeding.  相似文献

The current study evaluated whether flowering phenology and yield attributes of different strawberry cultivars affect the abundance and feeding impact of tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), as well as behavioral decisions made by feeding nymphs and ovipositing adults. The distribution of emerged nymphs in cage experiments involving nine different cultivars of June-bearing strawberry cultivars suggests that females lay more eggs on plants with numerous flower receptacles, while cultivar per se did not influence their oviposition behavior. A large number of nymphs emerged from receptacles of strawberry plants, while the distribution of emerged nymphs among receptacles, petioles, leaves, and stems varied for different cultivars. These results suggest that the relative intensity of damage caused by ovipositing females may vary for different cultivars. Foraging nymphs did not exhibit a preference for any strawberry cultivar per se, although the abundance of nymphs increased with the weight of receptacles, especially for late instars. Evaluating the density and feeding impact of L. lineolaris for different cultivars under field conditions revealed that some host plant attributes affect the abundance of plant bugs, such as early flowering season and high productivity. Decreasing number of emerged nymphs per flower per plant with increasing density of receptacles per plant suggests that females lay relatively more eggs per receptacle on plants with few receptacles; this pattern of oviposition may explain, in part, why patches with low density of plants typically have high incidence of damage. Planting a high yielding early season cultivar such as 'Cavendish' may contribute to reduce the incidence of damage by L. lineolaris.  相似文献

The effects of Bt transgenic cottons (Bt-I expressing cry1Ac and Bt-II expressing cry1Ab and cry2Ab or cry1Ab and cry1Fa) and non-Bt cottons on feeding, oviposition and longevity of adults, and development and survival of Liriomyza trifolii larvae were studied under laboratory conditions; and infestation on four Bt and two non-Bt cotton traits were investigated under field conditions. Laboratory choice and no-choice tests showed that L. trifolii adults were capable of distinguishing between Bt cottons and non-Bt cottons. In a choice test on younger plants (4-5 leaves), the adults were found more often and made more feeding punctures (FP) on non-Bt cottons than on Bt cottons. On older plants (8-9 leaves), adults made the most FP on non-Bt cotton followed by those on Bt-II cottons and the least on Bt-I cotton. The females oviposited more eggs (6.7 eggs per leaf) on non-Bt cotton than on Bt-I (1.7 eggs per leaf) and Bt-II (0.8 eggs per leaf) cottons on younger plants and oviposited similar numbers of eggs (0.7-1.3 eggs per leaf) on non-Bt and Bt cottons on older plants. In a no-choice test, the females also fed more FP on non-Bt cottons than on Bt cottons on both younger and older plants. The females oviposited more eggs (15.6 eggs per leaf) on non-Bt cotton than on Bt-I (8.2 eggs per leaf) and Bt-II (6.5 eggs per leaf) cottons on younger plants and similar numbers of eggs (2.5-3.3 eggs per leaf) on non-Bt and Bt cottons on older plants. Larval and puparial survivals were not different among Bt and non-Bt cottons. The occurrence and damage of leafminers on cottons in the field showed that L. trifolii infested more plants and leaves and had more mines on non-Bt cotton than on Bt cottons.  相似文献

The age at which females begin to lay, the daily pattern of oviposition, the influence of host-plant material on egg-laying as well as the host preference of Mamestra brassicae L. (Lep., Noctuidae) were investigated under laboratory conditions. The females began to oviposit during the third, fourth and fifth scotophase after emergence. A great variability in daily female fecundity was observed. The highest level of oviposition occurred during the fifth day. Females oviposited during the whole scotophase, but maximal oviposition occurred during the second hour. The females without host-plant material laid fewer eggs than females with host-plant material (cabbage leaves Brassica oleracea var. capitata ). In two-choice tests, the females preferred to oviposit on cabbage rather than chrysanthemum, but there was no difference in the mean number of eggs laid on cabbage and tomato. There were significantly greater mean numbers of total eggs deposited on tomato than on chrysanthemum.  相似文献

The rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, is the most destructive insect pest of rice in the United States. As part of an effort to develop strategies to manage this pest, the ovipositional and feeding habits of L. oryzophilus on rice plants subjected to different flooding treatments were characterized in greenhouse studies. Presence and depth of flood had a direct influence on the ovipositional behavior of weevils in no-choice studies. More eggs were found in flooded plants than in unflooded plants. Moreover, plants flooded to a depth of 5.1 cm received more eggs than plants flooded to depths of 1.3 or 10.2 cm. Presence and depth of flood influenced both the proportion of females that oviposited in plants and the number of eggs laid by those females that did oviposit. In choice studies, female weevils showed a marked ovipositional preference for plants flooded to a depth of 10.2 cm over unflooded plants and plants flooded to a depth of 1.3 cm. In separate choice experiments, adult rice water weevils fed more on flooded plants than on unflooded plants. In a third set of experiments, flooded plants were taller and had higher concentrations of 10 of 13 plant nutrients than unflooded plants. Thus, flooding may influence rice water weevil behavior both directly, by acting as a stimulus for feeding or oviposition, and indirectly, by inducing changes in the suitability of rice plants for feeding or oviposition. These data suggest that it may be possible to manipulate populations of weevils in rice by changing water management practices.

Biotypes of Trichogramma australicum were reared on artificial diet "A", Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (natural host) eggs and Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier) (factitious host) eggs. We evaluated the quality of these biotypes by comparing their oviposition behaviour and reproductive performance on H. armigera eggs. Female T. australicum reared in vitro accepted H. armigera eggs for oviposition and displayed similar behavioural components of oviposition to females reared on natural hosts. However, handling time during oviposition in H. armigera eggs by females from in vitro rearing was significantly longer than handling time of females reared on the natural host because the females needed a significantly longer time for host feeding. In vitro reared females produced significantly more progeny and parasitised more H. armigera eggs than the females reared on S. cerealella. Improvements to the artificial diet for T. australicum may reduce handling time of the in vitro reared females and increase the female population. These improvements may include changes in nutrient content and size of the artificial eggs.  相似文献

Oviposition-experienced females of Opius dissitus Muesebeck, a braconid parasitoid of Liriomyza sativaeBlanchard, preferentially landed on leafminer-infested rather than uninfested lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) plants in a flight tunnel assay. Both naive and oviposition-experiencedparasitoids responded strongly to odors of infested lima bean plants in a four-arm olfactometer in comparison with odors of uninfested plants, suggesting that volatile semiochemicals are used in host location. Parasitoids with an oviposition experience on lima bean (lima-experienced) spent significantly more time in the infested odor than naive individuals, however, eggplant-experienced wasps did not spend significantly more time in the infested odor field than naive wasps. When parasitoids reared on leafminers in lima bean were provided a choice between the odor of infested lima bean and the odor of infested eggplant or cotton, naive and lima-experienced wasps preferred infested lima odor. An oviposition experience on the other plant species resulted in a dramatic shift in preference. It was concluded that the experience effect was due, at least in part, to associative learning, as has been reported for other parasitoids. The parasitoids may perceive unconditioned stimuli during host contact and oviposition on an infested leaf and may associate those stimuli with volatile semiochemicals emanating from the leaf or host. Subsequently, the volatiles associated with the presence of hosts are used in directing the search for hosts.  相似文献

Abstract:  The oviposition preference of the cotton leafhopper, Amrasca biguttula biguttula (Ishida) was investigated in relation to leaf-vein characteristics of 12 plant species, namely okra, cotton, castor, pigeonpea, cowpea, cluster bean, green gram, egg plant, sesame, country mallow, portia tree and shoe flower. Observations on the oviposition of the leafhopper under no-choice conditions were recorded on three occasions during the peak period of leafhopper incidence in the field. On all three occasions the leafhopper rejected green gram, shoe flower and portia tree for egg-laying, thereby indicating non-acceptance of these plants for oviposition. For the remaining plants, the number of eggs per leaf differed significantly. Okra received the maximum number of eggs. The lateral veins of castor, cotton, cowpea, egg plant and country mallow leaves received more eggs in comparison with the main vein and subveins whereas in okra the subveins received the highest number of eggs followed by lateral and main veins. The leaves of cluster bean, pigeonpea and sesame were devoid of subveins. In cluster bean and sesame the lateral veins received more eggs than the main vein but in pigeonpea the main vein received more eggs than the lateral veins. Correlations of trichome density and length with the number of eggs laid in different veins were non-significant. All types of veins in okra leaves were thicker than the rest of the test plants, which might have stimulated more egg laying in okra. The thickness of each category of vein, namely main vein ( r =0.60), lateral veins ( r =0.65) and subveins ( r =0.56) was found to be positively correlated with the number of eggs laid. The length of the main and lateral veins were also found to be positively and significantly related to the number of eggs laid. It can be concluded from the present investigations that leaf-vein thickness and length are crucial factors in influencing the oviposition behaviour of the cotton leafhopper.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The tropical forest grasshopper Microtylopteryx hebardi Rehn (Orthoptera, Acrididae, Ommatolampinae) oviposits inside leaves or stems of its host plants. This is the first known instance of oviposition inside living plant tissue (rather than in the ground, on top of leaves, or in detritus) for a tropical forest acridid.
2. In understorey secondary forest at La Selva, Costa Rica, M.hebardi females fed on fifteen species of host plants, but oviposited in only four of these.
3. In laboratory choice tests, females showed selectivity for oviposition host plants similar to that inferred from field observations.
4. Plant volume was a better predictor of the number of eggs laid per stem than variables that indicated leaf or stem characteristics of individual plants.
5. Unlike the ovipositor of acridids laying eggs in the ground, that of M.hebardi is equipped with toothed, sclerotized edges, probably used to bore into plant tissue.
6. Endophytic oviposition in M.hebardi may be related to finding host plants in a habitat that is complex, heterogeneous, and rich in plant species.  相似文献
