Cocksfoot mottle virus (CfMV) and cynosurus mottle virus (CyMV) had similar, but not identical, host-ranges within the Gramineae. Each infected fifteen out of forty-one species tested, considerably fewer than phleum mottle virus (PMV), but unlike PMV both infected Triticum aestivum (wheat), causing a lethal mottle. The species most useful for differentiating CfMV, CyMV and PMV are listed. Some species appear especially susceptible to virus infection.  相似文献

In an attempt to find mild virus strains that would cross-protect sgainst vanilla necrosis potyvirus (VNPV), Vanilla fragrans plants in Tonga were surveyed for the presence of mild or symptomless potyvirus infections. Potyviruses were detected by indirect ELISA using a commercially available portyvirus group monoclonal anibody. From 28 plants with mild or symptomless infections two portyvirus isolates, designated V1 and V3, included systemic infections in Nicotiana benthamiana following mechanical inoculation. V1, which causes a mild mottle in N. benthamiana, is serologically related to VNPV, while V3 which causes mild vein banding is serologically unrelated to VNPV. Prior inoculation with V1 protected N. benthamiana against the severe mosaic symptoms of VNPV when challenge inoculated after 14 and 21 days, but not after 7 days. When V3 was used as the protecting strain, cross-protection was observed in some, but not all plants, when chalenged with VNPV after 14 and 21 days.  相似文献

Analyses of published host-range data for certain viruses reveal correlations with taxonomic groupings of grasses. Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), cocksfoot mottle and phleum mottle viruses are found to have infected greater proportions of the festucoid grasses than of the non-festucoids to which they were inoculated. By contrast, all strains of sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV) and of the closely related maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV) infected more non-festucoids than festucoids. In addition, infected plants from grass groups containing higher concentrations of genera susceptible to BYDV, SCMV and MDMV usually show clear symptoms, whereas infected plants from less susceptible groups are frequently symptomless. Some viruses, such as barley stripe mosaic, brome mosaic, cocksfoot streak and ryegrass mosaic, show no apparent preferences for particular grass groups. Samples of grasses employed in host-range studies are usually strongly biased towards festucoids. It is suggested that viruses ought to be adequately tested against genera from all the major groups, and a classified list of grass genera suitable for host-range studies is provided.  相似文献

A New South Wales isolate (Ca) of capsicum mosaic virus was tested against antisera to it and capsicum tobamovirus isolates from the Netherlands (P8, P11), USA (SL), Argentina (FO) and Sicily (PM). The comparison demonstrated that the four viruses Ca, P8, PM and SL are closely related to each other, forming a series of decreasing relationship to Ca in the above order. FO was related to these but insufficiently to be considered part of the group, and P11 was only slightly related to the others. The literature on serology of tobamoviruses in Capsicum spp. was collated and it is suggested that isolates from Sicily (pepper mild mottle), Australia (capsicum mosaic), The Netherlands (P8, P14) and USA (SL) be considered as strains of a virus distinct from both tobacco mosaic and tomato mosaic viruses and that these isolates all be referred to in future as strains of pepper mild mottle virus.  相似文献

Around 39 well characterised viruses affect cucurbits crops in developing countries and their viral diversity may be the consequence for genetic and ecological diversity of their hosts. Indeed, cucurbits are grown in variety of climatic, environmental and agricultural conditions, and this may provide more or less favourable conditions for the specific viruses or their hosts. The presence of various viral diseases caused by different viruses in Maharashtra was studied from the infected samples collected from cucurbits and melons during the survey conducted in 2009–2010 in different locations. The virus isolates collected from various cucurbitaceous crops were established and their host ranges were studied by sap transmission. The study revealed Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV), Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV), Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) and Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus infections predominately found in Nashik region, and Watermelon bud necrosis virus (WBNV), CMV, ZYMV, WMV and Watermelon silver mottle virus (WSMoV) infections in Aurangabad and Paithan regions. In Sangamner region, the crop was mostly affected by WBNV, ZYMV and WSMoV, and CMV was found only in Sillod region. The protocols for performing sap transmission tests in assay hosts were standardised for ZYMV, CMV and WBNV. Using direct antigen-coating enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, of all the plant parts, young leaves were found to have high concentration of virus and suitable for virus detection in screening programmes. A sap-transmissible virus obtained from cassava with a green mottle disease occurring at Choiseul, Solomon Islands, was transmitted to 30 species in 12 plant families and was readily seed-borne in Nicotiana clevelandii. In cassava plants infected by inoculation with sap, the first leaves to be infected systemically developed a mottle with some necrosis whereas leaves produced subsequently were symptomless but contained the virus. Most other species developed chlorotic or necrotic local lesions and systemic mottle or necrosis. This was followed, in several species, by production of small symptomless virus-containing leaves. The virus was cultured in N. clevelandii; Chenopodium quinoa was used for local-lesion assays. Leaf extracts from infected N. clevelandii were infective after dilution to 10–5 but usually not at 10–6, after heating for 10 min at 60°C but not at 65°C, and after storage at 20°C for at least 12 days. The virus has isometric particles of 26 nm diameter which sediment as three components, all containing a protein of mol. wt c. 53000. The two fastest sedimenting components respectively contain single-stranded RNA of mol. wt, estimated after glyoxylation, c. 2.9 × 106 and 2.3 × 106. Both RNA species are needed for infection of plants. In tests with antiserum prepared to purified virus particles, the virus was detected in cassava and N. clevelandii by gel-diffusion precipitin tests, by immunosorbent electron microscopy and by ELISA. Despite its similarity to nepoviruses, the virus did not react with antisera to 18 members of the group. It was named cassava green mottle virus and is considered to be a previously undescribed nepovirus.  相似文献

The genus Pyrola includes species with different degree of mycoheterotrophy; some species possess individuals that rely on all carbon through their associations with fungi (full mycoheterotrophy, FM), whereas some species obtain carbon through both fungi and photosynthesis by itself (partial mycoheterotrophy, PM). To investigate how plant functional traits of photosynthesis and reproduction are related to the degree of mycoheterotrophy in the initial stage of the transition from PM to FM, we determined morphological traits in FM (or nearly FM) and PM species in two independent lineages, P. picta and P. japonica complexes. We used herbarium specimens and examined leaf number, leaf area, flower number, and scape length in FM or nearly FM species (P. aphylla and P. subaphylla) and PM species (P. picta s.l. and P. japonica). We found a leaf area reduction in FM (or nearly FM) species in both lineages, suggesting that this is a convergent trait. The number of flowers was not significantly different between FM (or nearly FM) and PM species in both lineages. On the other hand, differences in the variation between FM (or nearly FM) and PM species were found in some traits between the two lineages. The FM (or nearly FM) species in one lineage only possessed rudimentary leaves, whereas that in the other linage possessed a few small, ordinary leaves in addition to those with only rudimentary leaves. The scape length of the FM (or nearly FM) species was significantly longer than that of PM species in one lineage, whereas it was shorter in the other lineage. The different and common variations are divergent and convergent traits, respectively, that could be associated with the transition to FM in Pylora. In addition, shoots of both PM species occasionally lacked ordinary leaves, possibly indicating possession of these shoots is preadaptation for the transition to FM in Pyrola.  相似文献

Studies of host–parasite dynamics usually consider one, or at most two, host species, neglecting the possible effects of other species on the focal hosts and vice versa. To explore the interaction of community structure with host–parasite dynamics, we model the invasion of stable communities of varying size by a parasite. The communities are generated with random interaction coefficients and connectance 0.5. Each community is invaded by parasites with different values of virulence (disease-induced host mortality rate), specificity and transmission rate. The result of each invasion is determined by numerically simulating the dynamics of the community. We classify the outcomes by whether the parasite successfully establishes in the focal host population(s), and, if so, by the proportion of host and non-host species that go extinct as a result of the parasite's introduction. We discuss how the structure of the community and the interaction between hosts and other species affect several important processes of disease ecology: the density threshold for parasite invasion, extinction cascades caused by the parasite, and the frequency of extinctions of hosts and non-hosts. In our simulated communities, non-host species went extinct more frequently than hosts, suggesting the importance of the community context of disease. In some cases, the parasite's invasion induced regular population cycles in the previously stable community.  相似文献

Oulema melanopa and O. lichenis both transmit cocksfoot mottle and phleum mottle viruses with similar efficiencies. The viruses were serologically dissimilar and did not cross-protect against each other in barley. Both viruses were acquired after a few minutes feeding, but longer acquisition feeding periods increased both the efficiency of transmission and persistence in the vectors. Acquisition of either virus increased vector mortality whilst acquisition of both together did not. When both viruses were ingested, only one was transmitted. Each virus could be recovered from haemolymph and faeces, but regurgitation was not observed and could only be induced with the greatest difficulty. The results suggest possible circulative transmission of some beetle-borne viruses.  相似文献

Eriophyoid mites, which are among the smallest plant feeders, are characterized by the intimate relationships they have with their hosts and the restricted range of plants upon which they can reproduce. The knowledge of their true host ranges and mechanisms causing host specificity is fundamental to understanding mite-host interactions, potential mite-host coevolution, and diversity of this group, as well as to apply effective control strategies or to use them as effective biological control agents. The aim of this paper is to review current knowledge on host specificity and specialization in eriophyoid mites, and to point out knowledge gaps and doubts. Using available data on described species and recorded hosts we showed that: (1) 80% of eriophyoids have been reported on only one host species, 95% on one host genus, and 99% on one host family; (2) Diptilomiopidae has the highest proportion of monophagous species and Phytoptidae has the fewest; (3) non-monophagous eriophyoids show the tendency to infest closely related hosts; 4) vagrant eriophyoids have a higher proportion of monophagous species than refuge-seeking and refuge-inducing species; (5) the proportions of monophagous species infesting annual and perennial hosts are similar; however, many species infesting annual hosts have wider host ranges than those infesting perennial hosts; (6) the proportions of species that are monophagous infesting evergreen and deciduous plants are similar; (7) non-monophagous eriophyoid species have wider geographic distribution than monophagous species. Field and laboratory host-specificity tests for several eriophyoid species and their importance for biological control of weeds are described. Testing the actual host range of a given eriophyoid species, searching for ecological data, genetic differentiation analysis, and recognizing factors and mechanisms that contribute to host specificity of eriophyoid mites are suggested as future directions for research.  相似文献

Bell pepper mottle virus (BPeMV) can be distinguished by symptomatology and host range from other tobamoviruses but a reliable identification needs serological tests. The relationships of BPeMV to tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), Odontoglossum ringspot virus (ORSV), tobacco mild green mosaic virus (TMGMV), and pepper mild mottle virus (PMMV) were investigated using precipitin drop tests on slides, immunodiffusion gel tests, double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and indirectELISA using enzyme-linked goat anti-rabbit globulins for the determination of antiserum titers and serological differentiation indices (SDI). Comparisons of SDIs and amino acid composition data demonstrated that BPeMV is a new species of the tobamovirusgroup. BPeMV, ORSV, PMMV, and TMGMV form a cluster within the genus (group) and could be considered as a subgenus of tobamoviruses.  相似文献

To better understand the naturally occurring host range of Bean pod mottle virus (family Comoviridae, genus Comovirus, BPMV) and its principal vector Cerotoma trifurcata (F?rster) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), 18 field-collected perennial plant species were tested for the presence of BPMV. By using no-choice assays, we determined the preference of these plants by bean leaf beetle, by measuring their level of herbivory relative to soybean, Glycine max (L.). New food hosts for adult bean leaf beetles include Lespedeza capitata (Michaux), Lotus corniculatus L., Trifolium alexandrinum L., Trifolium ambiguum Bieberstein, and Trifolium incarnatum L. Desmodium illinoense Gray is discovered as a new naturally occurring host for BPMV.  相似文献

Host range is a critical life history trait of parasites, influencing prevalence, virulence and ultimately determining their distributional extent. Current approaches to measure host range are sensitive to sampling effort, the number of known hosts increasing with more records. Here, we develop a novel application of results-based stopping rules to determine how many hosts should be sampled to yield stable estimates of the number of primary hosts within regions, then use species richness estimation to predict host ranges of parasites across their distributional ranges. We selected three mistletoe species (hemiparasitic plants in the Loranthaceae) to evaluate our approach: a strict host specialist (Amyema lucasii, dependent on a single host species), an intermediate species (Amyema quandang, dependent on hosts in one genus) and a generalist (Lysiana exocarpi, dependent on many genera across multiple families), comparing results from geographically-stratified surveys against known host lists derived from herbarium specimens. The results-based stopping rule (stop sampling bioregion once observed host richness exceeds 80% of the host richness predicted using the Abundance-based Coverage Estimator) worked well for most bioregions studied, being satisfied after three to six sampling plots (each representing 25 host trees) but was unreliable in those bioregions with high host richness or high proportions of rare hosts. Although generating stable predictions of host range with minimal variation among six estimators trialled, distribution-wide estimates fell well short of the number of hosts known from herbarium records. This mismatch, coupled with the discovery of nine previously unrecorded mistletoe-host combinations, further demonstrates the limited ecological relevance of simple host-parasite lists. By collecting estimates of host range of constrained completeness, our approach maximises sampling efficiency while generating comparable estimates of the number of primary hosts, with broad applicability to many host-parasite systems.  相似文献

Hemiparasitic plants have green leaves, but extract water and solutes from neighbouring plants. It is still poorly understood how different host plants in communities contribute to parasite performance, as species that are good hosts in single‐host experiments may not necessarily be preferred hosts in mixtures. We grew the root hemiparasite Rhinanthus alectorolophus (Orobanchaceae) together with each of 13 host species (experiment 1) and with 15 different four‐species mixtures of these hosts (experiment 2) that differed in the number of legumes and of host functional groups. Parasites profited from mixtures including more legumes and from mixtures including different host functional groups. Some host species and mixtures were very tolerant of parasitism and supported large parasites without being strongly suppressed in their own growth, but the suppression of a species in the single‐host experiment did not explain the suppression of a species in a host mixture. We thus calculated for each host species an index of the difference in suppression between the two experiments which may be related to host use in a mixture. Host quality (mean parasite biomass with a host species) in the single‐host experiment could explain 64% of the variation in parasite biomass with a host mixture when it was weighted by the proportion of the host species in the mixture without the parasite and by the suppression difference index. Our results suggest that plant species which are the best hosts in single‐host experiments are not always those used most strongly by a parasite growing with a mixture. Together with the finding that hemiparasites benefit from a mixed diet based on hosts from different functional groups this suggests that parasites prefer certain host species to obtain a mixed diet.  相似文献

Although most parasites show at least some degree of host specificity, factors governing the evolution of specificity remain poorly understood. Many different groups of host-specific parasites show a striking correlation between parasite and host body size, suggesting that size reinforces specificity. We tested this hypothesis by measuring the relative fitness of host-specific feather lice transferred to pigeons and doves that differ in size by an order of magnitude. To test the general influence of size, we transferred unrelated groups of wing and body lice, which are specialized for different regions of the host. Lice were transferred in both directions, from a large native host species, the rock pigeon (Columba livia), to several progressively smaller hosts, and from a small native host species, the common ground dove (Columbina passerina), to several larger hosts. We measured the relative fitness (population size) of lice transferred to these novel host species after two louse generations. Neither wing lice nor body lice could survive on novel host species that were smaller in size than the native host. However, when host defense (preening behavior) was blocked, both groups survived and reproduced on all novel hosts tested. Thus, host defense interacted with host size to govern the ability of lice to establish on small hosts. Neither wing lice nor body lice could survive on larger hosts, even when preening was blocked. In summary, host size influenced the fitness of both types of feather lice, but through different mechanisms, depending on the direction of the transfer. Our results indicate that host switching is most likely between hosts of similar body size. This finding has important implications for studies of host-parasite coevolution at both the micro- and macroevolutionary scales.  相似文献

Abstract In a preliminary trial 187 collections of muskmelon comprising dessert and non-dessert types and wild Cucumis species were screened against cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) under field conditions. Based on the reaction to CGMMV, 64 were studied further in detail. Thirteen collections were found to be resistant in two field screenings (summer and rainy seasons). Results on screening under artificial conditions against pure isolate of CGMMV indicated that Cucumis figarei , C. myriocarpus 1, C. myriocarpus 3, C. africanus 1, C. africanus 2, C. meeusii, C. ficifolius and C. zeyheri 2 were resistant to virus. Immune nature of resistance was later confirmed by back inoculation technique and, transmission electron microscopic study of C. figarei, C. ficifolius, C. meeusii, C. africanus 1 and C. zeyheri 2. Phoot ( C. melo var. momordica ) and Kachri (non-dessert types), FM 1 and FM 2 (Cornell breeding lines) and C,. myriocarpus 2 were also resistant to CGMMV with very mild symptoms.  相似文献

Vein-clearing followed by downward rolling and necrosis of leaves and severe stunting of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) plants were caused by cowpea mild mottle virus (CMMV). The virus was readily transmitted by mechanical sap inoculations to groundnut and to 10 plant species belonging to Leguminosae, Chenopodiaceae and Solanaceae. Chenopodium quinoa and Beta vulgaris were good diagnostic hosts. Diseased sap remained infective at 10–3 but not 10–4, when stored 8 to 9 days at 25 °C; for 10min at 75 °C but not 80°C. In limited tests, virus was not seed-transmitted m groundnut or soybean. Virus was transmitted by Bemisia tabaci but not by Aphis craccivora or Myzus persicae. An antiserum for CMMV was produced and virus was serologically related to CMMV reported on cowpea and groundnut crinkle virus (GCV) from West Africa. Employing carbon diffraction grating replica as a standard the modal length of virus particles to be 610 nm. Infected cells contained large number of virus particles associated with endoplasmic reticulum.  相似文献

An epidemic of conjunctivitis among house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) bacterial infections was first described in 1994. The disease exhibits high primary host specificity, but has been isolated from a limited number of secondary avian hosts at various times and locations. We used records from the House Finch Disease Survey, a continent-wide, volunteer monitoring project, to document the host range of conjunctivitis in birds at feeding stations and to investigate how disease in house finches might influence the spread of conjunctivitis to other hosts. Between 1994 and 1998, participants recorded 675 cases of conjunctivitis in 31 species other than house finches in eastern North America. Seventy five % of these cases were observed among three species: American goldfinches (Carduelis tristis), purple finches (Carpodacus purpureus) and house sparrows (Passer domesticus). The proportion of sites with diseased wintering populations of the three species increased over the 4 yr study and coincided with range expansion of conjunctivitis in house finches. Sites with diseased house finches present were significantly more likely to report conjunctivitis in each of the three species during the same month. These observations are most consistent with transmission of an infectious agent (presumably MG) from house finches to these secondary hosts via spillover of localized epidemics, rather than sustained interspecific transmission.  相似文献
