This study examined swim bladder morphogenesis in three cohorts of striped trumpeter (Latris lineata), a euphysoclist species with physostomous larvae. The swim bladder was first discernible 1–2 days after hatching as an evagination on the dorsal surface of the incipient digestive tract. It comprised a cluster of mesenchymal cells surrounding an inner primordium of epithelial cells. At mouth opening in larvae of 5.3 mm standard length (SL), the swim bladder was noticeably enlarged. Histologically, the swim bladder lumen was dilated and liquid filled. The pneumatic duct was first seen during the dilation stage and the rete mirabile began forming among the connective tissue surrounding the swim bladder. Initial swim bladder inflation occurred on day 11 post‐hatching in Cohort 1, at 14°C, and day 9 post‐hatching, in Cohorts 2 and 3, at 16°C. Histologically, the lumens of inflated swim bladders were ellipsoid and the epithelium was squamous, except for cuboidal gas gland cells at the anterio‐ventral and anterio‐lateral regions of the swim bladder. During the initial inflation interval the pneumatic duct was dilated in larvae both with and without swim bladder inflation. The pneumatic duct began to regress in some larvae over 7.5 mm SL. The swim bladder of striped trumpeter was similar to larvae of other altricial perciform marine fish in respect to organ derivation, tissue differentiation, luminal dilation and initial gaseous inflation. However, variations, particularly the delay in initial swim bladder inflation until after the start of feeding, were observed that could be fundamental to problems encountered during larval rearing.  相似文献

The semiwild beach-feeding bottlenose dolphins ( Tursiops aduncus ) of Monkey Mia, Western Australia, provide an unparalleled opportunity to examine prey preference of this species. In a series of binary-choice feeding experiments, we took advantage of the animals' willingness to be fed by hand, to explore their preferences for fish species, size, and state (freshly caught or previously frozen). At the end of each beach visit, each dolphin was provided with a pair of fish but allowed to eat only the first one chosen. The dolphins appeared indifferent among the three species of fish offered to them (yellowtail trumpeter, Amniataba caudovittatus ; striped trumpeter, Pelates sexlineatus ; and western butterfish, Pentapodus vitta ), which were of similar body form and matched for mass. Overall, the dolphins showed a slight preference for the larger of two yellowtail trumpeter offered, suggesting the capability for rational choice when there was a basis for it (most likely energy in this case), although there was considerable individual variation. The dolphins did not distinguish between freshly caught and previously frozen yellowtail. The methodology we describe can be used to generate data of potential value for understanding food and habitat selection of wild dolphins, and for modifying management practices for semiwild dolphins at Monkey Mia and elsewhere.  相似文献

A single-round polymerase chain reaction (PCR) diagnostic assay was developed from a small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) gene sequence to detect the myxozoan parasite Kudoa neurophila, the causative agent of myxozoan disease in the hatchery reared marine finfish, striped trumpeter Latris lineata (Forster). The assay was developed for use as a disease control management tool in a hatchery system specifically designed to research and produce marine finfish such as striped trumpeter juveniles for aquaculture. The assay is sufficiently species specific and sensitive enough to detect a small fragment of the parasite's SSU rDNA. At the lower limits of detection, the test is consistently positive to an estimated 0.1 spore or 60 fg of parasite DNA per 25 microl PCR reaction in serial dilution and positive to an estimated 0.1 spore in 25 mg of infected fish CNS tissue (4 spores g(-1). Specifically, the test is capable of detecting early stages of the life cycle within the fish host and consequently diagnosing an infection not normally detected using traditional histological techniques. The test is also effective for screening water supplies and prey species cultures throughout the hatchery system to determine bio-security efficacy, to assist in identification of an alternate or other primary fish host, to indicate the location of potential disease reservoirs, and to enable a targetted approach to disease prevention.  相似文献

Nine species of psychrolutids kept in the Marine Zoology of Hokkaido University were found to carry eight species of copepod parasites. The parasites and their hosts are: Bobkabata kabatabobbus Hogans and Benz, 1990 on Malacocottus zonurus Bean; Chondracanthus parvus n. sp. on Eurymen gyrinus Gilbert and Burke; Chondracanthus yabei n. sp. on Dasycottus setiger Bean and M. zonurus; Ch. yanezi Atria, 1980 on Psychrolutes phrictus Stein and Bond; Caligus similis n. sp. on Neophrynichthys latus (Hutton); Clavella adunca (Str?m, 1762) on M. zonurus; Neobrachiella amphipacifica Ho, 1982 on Ambophthalmos angustus (Nelson), Cottunculus sp., D. setiger, Ebinania brephocephala (Jordan and Starks), E. vermiculata Sakamoto, and P. phrictus; and Naobranchia occidentalis Wilson, 1915 on D. setiger and M. zonurus. Chondracanthus parvus is closest to Ch. deltoideus Fraser, 1920, but differs from it in having only one pair of small knobs on the head and carrying a pair of lateral processes on the second pediger. Chondracanthus yabei resembles Ch. yanezi Atria, 1980, but can be distinguished from it by the presence of three, low protrusions on the mid-dorsal surface of the trunk; besides, maxillule also shows difference. As the name indicates, C. similis resembles several species of Caligus that bear a short abdomen and a formula of I; IV on the exopod of leg 4. However, it can be separated from them by the combination of the following characters: a genital complex distinctly smaller than the cephalothoracic shield, a pair of relatively short caudal rami, a smooth dentiform process on maxillule, and a pair of truncate tines on sternal furca. Analysis of the occurrence of Chondracanthus on the psychrolutid fishes shows that the phylogeny of Chondracanthus is in congruence with that of the Psychrolutidae. It implies that parasitism of Chondracanthus occurred after the Dasycottus clade diverged off the main stock of the Psychrolutidae and the occurrence of Ch. yabei on D. setiger is resulted from a later colonization.  相似文献

Sexually mature female striped trumpeter Latris lineata (Forster, 1801) were sampled monthly for two spawning seasons until the start of gonadal recrudescence, and then fortnightly until ovulations ceased. Oocyte size and ovarian length, measured by inserting a semi-rigid biopsy catheter to the full extent of insertion, were recorded at each sample time. Ovarian length was expressed as proportion of fork length to provide a gonad index (GI). In non-ovulating females, there was little change in GI throughout the year. However, in ovulating females, GI increased from 18.3 five months before the first spawning season to 27.6 at the peak of the season in October, decreasing to 19.1 the following May and then increasing again to a maximum of 31.1 the following October, in concert with annual changes in reproductive condition. There was a positive linear correlation between GI and oocyte size during the period of oocyte growth ( r  = 0.75, n = 302). Based on the range of GI values for each stage in oocyte development (primary, cortical alveoli, vitellogenic, maturing and hydrated), GI was 90% accurate at assessing fish as pre-vitellogenic and 83% accurate at assessing fish as undergoing final oocyte maturation. This study demonstrated that measurement of GI by catheterization provides a rapid and non-destructive method for assessing maturational status of striped trumpeter broodstock.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to generate bison x cattle hybrid embryos by in vitro fertilization, to assess their developmental potential, to determine the pattern of secretion of the embryonic signaling molecule interferon-tau (IFN-tau), and to identify novel IFN-tau mRNA polymorphism in the American plains bison. A total of 600 bovine oocytes were inseminated with frozen-thawed bison semen. Of these, 40.7% cleaved and 14.8% proceeded to the blastocyst stage. Individual blastocysts were cultured on a basement membrane (Matrigel) and their ability to attach and form outgrowths was monitored. A total of 36 blastocysts were cultured of which 22 formed outgrowths. During individual culture, medium samples were collected and their IFN-tau concentration was measured. On day 6 after onset of individual culture, attached outgrowths produced significantly more IFN-tau than unattached viable or degenerate blastocysts. At this time, female conceptuses also produced significantly more IFN-tau than their male cohorts. However, by day 12 this difference had disappeared. Total mRNA was extracted from three individual outgrowths and analyzed by RT-PCR. Subsequent sequencing of 28 clones showed several known bovine IFN-tau sequences as well as two novel sequences termed bisIFN-tau1 and 2. To determine the origin of these, DNA was extracted from bison semen and analyzed by PCR. One bovine IFN-tau sequence (bovIFN-tau1d) as well as bisIFN-tau2 and a third novel sequence bisIFN-tau3 were detected. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using hybrid embryos for the analysis of developmentally regulated gene expression in species where embryos may not be available.  相似文献

A finite interval of initial swimbladder inflation in striped trumpeter Latris lineata larvae occurred over 4 days at 16° C. Water‐surface films were removed on different days to form treatments: 4, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 days post hatching, dph (day 4, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 treatments, respectively). No swimbladder inflation was recorded prior to water‐surface film removal. When the water‐surface films were removed in day 4 and 8 treatments, initial swimbladder inflation was first recorded in larvae 9 dph at mean ± s .e . 35·0 ± 5·4%(n = 4) and 45·0 ± 7·9%, respectively. Water‐surface film removal at days 9, 10 and 11, resulted in initial swimbladder inflation the following day at 62·5 ± 2·5, 62·5 ± 7·2 and 11·3 ± 5·5% in larvae 10, 11 and 12 dph, respectively. No swimbladder inflation was recorded following water‐surface film removal on day 12. There was no significant difference in initial inflation among larvae in day 4, 8, 9 and 10 treatments, ranging from 65·0 ± 4·1 to 73·8 ± 6·9%(P > 0·05). Initial inflation was significantly lower in the day 11 treatment (11·3 ± 5·5%)(P < 0·05). During the inflation interval (9–12 dph) swimbladders displayed one of three morphologies; liquid dilation, gas inflated and collapsed. Collapse of the swimbladder lumen was first apparent in larvae without swimbladder inflation from 11 dph and progressively developed thereafter in all larvae with non‐inflated swimbladders. Larvae >6·1 mm standard length lost the ability to undergo initial swimbladder inflation. This study demonstrates that the interval for initial swimbladder inflation in striped trumpeter is short, finite and related to larval size. The end of the inflation interval was marked by onset of abnormal swimbladder morphologies, but not to closure of the pneumatic duct.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Decreasing abundance of resident, nonmigratory trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator) in Yellowstone National Park (YNP), USA, raised concern that this population, which helped facilitate the restoration of the species across North America, may disappear. We quantified trends in abundance of resident and migratory trumpeter swans in YNP from 1967 to 2007 and investigated the potential mechanisms for declining population trends, including cessation of the supplemental feeding program and relocation programs outside of YNP, density dependence, and annual variations in environmental conditions. Estimated abundance of resident trumpeter swans in YNP ranged from 59 individuals in 1968 to 10 individuals in 2007. Using log-linear modeling, the best approximating model chosen from an a priori set of competing models estimated the annual growth rate (r) of resident swans from 1967 to 2007 was −0.036 (95% CI =−0.042 to −0.030, Akaike wt [wi] = 0.44). A competing model provided evidence that decreases in abundance became more dramatic after supplemental feeding of grain outside of YNP was terminated in winter 1992–1993 (1967–1992 = −0.027, 95% CI = −0.039 to −0.015; 1993–2007 = −0.053, 95% CI = −0.029 to −0.080; wi = 0.42). There was little evidence of density-dependent effects on the resident population growth rates (βYNPpop = 0.006, 95% CI = −0.017 to 0.007), but rates were lower following severe winters, wetter springs, and warmer summers. Our results indicate that the YNP population of trumpeter swans is decreasing and may act as a sink to surrounding populations. Thus, population levels of YNP trumpeter swans may depend on management outside the Park and we recommend the National Park Service collaborate with surrounding agencies in managing trumpeter swans throughout the Tri-state region where more productive habitats may exist.  相似文献

The morphology of a cyclopoid copepod, Mesocyclops aspericornis(Daday, 1906), from a tropical pond is redescribed in detail. This species is clearly distinguished from Mesocyclops leuckarti.New diagnostic characters, such as the distribution of featheredand non-feathered outgrowths on the antennule, the presenceof aesthetascs in both genders, circular groups of spinulesalong the dorsal and ventral surface of caudal rami, a groupof 14 spinules on the coxa of P2 and P3 and eight spinules onP1 and P4, are described. In the case of males, a stouter firstendopodite segment of the antennae and an upwardly bent spineon the first exopodite segment of P2 and spinules on the genitalsegment are described for the first time. The taxonomy of M.aspericornis is discussed.  相似文献

A qualitative and quantitative analysis of outgrowths from the surface membrane of dendrites in regions of the gray matter of the spinal cord where different long descending tracts terminate was undertaken by electron microscopy. These outgrowths of dendrites were found to be most simply organized in the medial part of the ventral horn, where synaptic endings of fibers of the medial lemniscus are concentrated. In the dorsal regions of gray matter, where fibers of the lateral systems terminate, the outgrowths have a more complex structural organization, expressed as changes in size and shape and also as the appearance of elements of a weakly developed spinous apparatus in the matrix. These outgrowths were described as spine-like. A statistically significant difference was found between the size of dendritic outgrowths in the lateral part of Rexed's lamina V and the lateral part of laminae VI–VII, and also the medial part of lamina VIII.A. Decellularization of tissues is a recently developed technique mostly used to provide a 3-dimensional matrix structure of the original organ, including decellularized lung tissues for lung transplantation. Based on the results of the present study, we propose new utilization of decellularized tissues as inducers of stem cell differentiation. Decellularized lung matrix (L-Mat) samples were prepared from mouse lungs by SDS treatment, then the effects of L-Mat on differentiation of ES cells into lung cells were investigated. ES cell derived-embryoid bodies (EBs) were transplanted into L-Mat samples and cultured for 2 weeks. At the end of the culture, expressions of lung cell-related markers, such as TTF-1 and SP-C (alveolar type II cells), AQP5 (alveolar type I cells), and CC10 (club cells), were detected in EB outgrowths in L-Mat, while those were not found in EB outgrowths attached to the dish. Our results demonstrated that L-Mat has an ability to induce differentiation of ES cells into lung-like cells.  相似文献

Reproductive performance in birds depends on several factors, one of the most important being the time of breeding. Birds try to fit offspring birth and growth to peak vegetative production in order to assure fledgling survival. In arid environments, where weather conditions are often extreme, birds must face unpredictable abiotic conditions. This study uses a border population of the trumpeter finch (Bucanetes githagineus) as a model to test whether climate variables (rainfall and temperature) influence breeding parameters by comparing 2 years with very different weather. The study was carried out in the Tabernas desert (southeastern Spain) in 2004 and 2005. A comparison of laying dates in the 2 years shows a 40-day delay in the date of the first clutch in the coldest year (mean minimum temperature 3°C lower in 2005 than in 2004). However, once the breeding season started, the number of clutches, clutch size, duration of the incubation period, nestling phase, fledgling rates and productivity were similar. One likely explanation for this delay is that low temperatures did not allow the germination of Diplotaxis sp., a plant forming the bulk of the trumpeter finch diet during spring. Its absence could prevent onset of breeding, although other temperature-related factors could also be involved. Although rainfall has frequently been reported as a limiting factor for arid bird species, our 2-year study shows that temperature can also influence the breeding biology of arid bird species, by affecting its timing.  相似文献

Effects of extracellular matrix proteins and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases-2 (TIMP-2) on bovine inner cell mass (ICM) outgrowth and proteinase production in vitro were determined. Inner cell masses were isolated immunosurgically from day 7 embryos (day 0 = onset of estrus) and cultured for 96 h. In experiment 1, cellular outgrowth and gelatinase production were evaluated for ICM cultured on collagen IV, fibronectin, or laminin. More (P < 0.05) ICM generated cellular outgrowth on fibronectin (71%). compared with collagen IV (0%) or laminin (15%). Inner cell mass and outgrowth areas were greatest (P < 0.05) on fibronectin after 96 h of culture, compared with laminin. Although the incidence of cellular outgrowth on laminin was limited, numbers of cells in outgrowths supported by laminin were similar (P > 0.10) to fibronectin except at 72 h of culture, where more (P < 0.05) cells were in laminin than in fibronectin outgrowths. Gelatinase activity was not detected in conditioned medium. In experiment 2, cellular outgrowth and plasminogen activator production by ICM cultured on fibronectin in medium containing 0 or 10 microg/ml TIMP-2 were evaluated. Inner cell mass and outgrowth areas, and numbers of cells in outgrowths were greater (P < 0.05) in 10 compared with 0 microg/ml TIMP-2 at 96 h of culture. Mean plasminogen activator activity in conditioned medium from ICM cultured in 10 microg/ml TIMP-2 was greater (P < 0.05) compared with 0 microg/ml TIMP-2 (16.2 +/- 4.8 versus 6.7 +/- 1.4 x 10(-3) IU/ml, respectively). These results demonstrate that cellular outgrowth from bovine ICM is supported by fibronectin and is stimulated by TIMP-2.  相似文献

Billfish rostra potentially have several functions; however, their role in feeding is unequivocal in some species. Recent work linked morphological variation in rostral micro-teeth to differences in feeding behavior in two billfish species, the striped marlin (Kajikia audax) and the sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus). Here, we present the rostral micro-tooth morphology for a third billfish species, the blue marlin (Makaira nigricans), for which the use of the rostrum in feeding behavior is still undocumented from systematic observations in the wild. We measured the micro-teeth on rostrum tips of blue marlin, striped marlin, and sailfish using a micro–computed tomography approach and compared the tooth morphology among the three species. This was done after an analysis of video-recorded hunting behavior of striped marlin and sailfish revealed that both species strike prey predominantly with the first third of the rostrum, which provided the justification to focus our analysis on the rostrum tips. In blue marlin, intact micro-teeth were longer compared to striped marlin but not to sailfish. Blue marlin had a higher fraction of broken teeth than both striped marlin and sailfish, and broken teeth were distributed more evenly on the rostrum. Micro-tooth regrowth was equally low in both marlin species but higher in sailfish. Based on the differences and similarities in the micro-tooth morphology between the billfish species, we discuss potential feeding-related rostrum use in blue marlin. We put forward the hypothesis that blue marlin might use their rostra in high-speed dashes as observed in striped marlin, rather than in the high-precision rostral strikes described for sailfish, possibly focusing on larger prey organisms.  相似文献

A decline in bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix L.) recreational landings during the 1990s and the early 2000s led to multiple theories on the ultimate cause. One theory was that a large portion of the bluefish population moved offshore and was unavailable to nearshore recreational fishers; one reason given for the movement offshore was increased competition with striped bass (Morone saxatilis W.). We conducted laboratory experiments (feeding and non-feeding) to examine behavioral interactions between adult bluefish and sub-adult striped bass in a large (121,000 L) research aquarium. Additionally, we examined diet and habitat overlap of bluefish and striped bass from the fall and spring bottom trawl surveys conducted by the National Marine Fisheries Service. Observations of feeding trials for the following treatments were made: non-impaired (i.e., same number and size of bluefish and striped bass), size-impaired (i.e., large striped bass/small bluefish), number-impaired (i.e.,10 striped bass/3bluefish), and single-species controls. Within a species, there was no difference in a variety of behavioral measures (e.g., attack rate, capture success, ingestion rate, and activity) between mixed- and control treatments under non-impaired or size-impaired conditions. However, behavior of number-impaired bluefish differed from control and size-impaired fish suggesting that striped bass may have a negative influence on bluefish foraging when bluefish are “out-numbered”. Feeding had a strong effect on swimming speeds for both species. Diet and habitat overlap between bluefish and striped bass in continental shelf waters was low. Overall, foraging behavior in mixed-species treatments and field observations suggest no competitive interactions between adult bluefish and sub-adult striped bass.  相似文献

Zalophotrema atlanticum n. sp. from the liver of a striped dolphin, Stenella coeruleoalba (Meyen, 1833), stranded in the Canary Islands is described. This new species differs from the other Zalophotrema species in body dimensions and relative size and position of the suckers and cirrus-sac. This is the first record of a species of the genus Zalophotrema in the striped dolphin, and the Atlantic Ocean constitutes a new locality record for this genus.  相似文献

There is very little information on the capacity of freshwater carnivorous fish to biosynthesize highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA). The striped snakehead fish (Channa striata) is a carnivorous species cultured inland of several Southeast Asian countries due to its pharmaceutical properties in wound healing enhancement. We described here the full-length cDNA cloning of a striped snakehead fatty acid desaturase (fads), which is responsible for desaturation of unsaturated fatty acids in the HUFA biosynthesis. Bioinformatics analysis reveals a protein coding region with length of 445 amino acids containing all characteristic features of desaturase enzyme, including a cytochrome b5-domain with the heme-binding motif, two transmembrane domains and three histidine-rich regions. The striped snakehead fads amino acid sequence shares high similarity with known fads of other teleosts. The mRNA expression of striped snakehead fads also showed an ontogenic-related increase in expression in 0-20 days after hatch larva. Using ISH, we localized the presence of fads in larva brain, liver and intestinal tissues.  相似文献

The occurrence of striped colour patterns and of striped/non-striped polymorphism systems among snakes is reviewed from literature data augmented by some personal observations. Among 1367 species, 190 were striped or had striped morphs. Of 11 families, the striped pattern was common mainly among Colubridae, presumably in relation to the active escape behaviour strategy, prevalent in this family. The striped species tended to cluster in a small number of genera. The 40 striped/non-striped polymorphism systems found, fall into five categories, according to the coloration patterns of the alternative morphs: (I) blotched (cryptic); (2) barred (or ringed); (3) plain; (4) melanistic; (5) albinistic. Most polymorphisms are presumably maintained by eco-behavioural trade-offs, depending on the category and on the habitat: The striped morph is presumed more effective in active escape and sometimes also in camouflage; the alternative morph may be more effective in camouflage, in active escape or in thermoregulation. Hence morph frequency depends on the habitat. Striped-albinistic polymorphism in Elaphe climacophora presumably depends on human protection of the albino morph.  相似文献
