Stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen were used to examine differences in the feeding ecology of sympatric morphotypes of Arctic charr Sahelinus alpinus from Lake Hazen, Ellesmere Island, in the Canadian High Arctic. Large and small morphotypes possessed significantly different carbon and nitrogen signatures with large-form Arctic charr being more depleted in 13C and more enriched in 15N than the small-form. Isotope and stomach content analyses yielded consistent results and indicated short- and long-term reliance on fish as a food for large Arctic charr. Large-form individuals predate on juveniles but do not predate on small-form individuals ≥ 250 mm. The observed cannibalism by large-form individuals, therefore, does not act to maintain the bimodal length-frequency distribution in Lake Hazen. Bimodality is argued to arise for ecological reasons connected with differing habitat use by the morphotypes and the associated differences in resource consumption opportunities.  相似文献

Thingvallavatn, Iceland contains two sympatric morphotypes (benthic and limnetic) of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus. Each morphotype is composed of two morphs and these differ markedly in ecology, behaviour and life history. We used molecular genetic approaches to test whether (i) genetic heterogeneity exists among morphs and (ii) if morphs arose in allopatry and came into secondary contact or arose sympatrically within the lake through genetic segregation and/or phenotypic plasticity. Direct sequencing of 275 bp of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region, mtDNA restriction fragment length polymorphisms and single locus minisatellite analyses detected insufficient variation to test our hypotheses. Analysis of multilocus minisatellite band sharing detected no significant differences between morphs within the same morphotype. However, significant differences among morphs belonging to different morphotypes suggest some genetic heterogeneity in Thingvallavatn charr. Limnetic charr from Thingvallavatn were more similar to sympatric benthic charr than to allopatric limnetics from two other Icelandic lakes. This suggests that the Thingvallavatn morphs arose sympatrically within the lake rather than in allopatry followed by secondary contact.  相似文献

A generalist strategy, as an adaptation to environmental heterogeneity, is common in Arctic freshwater systems, often accompanied, however, by intraspecific divergence that promotes specialization in niche use. To better understand how resources may be partitioned in a northern system that supports intraspecific diversity of Lake Trout, trophic niches were compared among four shallow‐water morphotypes in Great Bear Lake (N65° 56′ 39″, W120° 50′ 59″). Bayesian mixing model analyses of stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen were conducted on adult Lake Trout. Major niche overlap in resource use among four Lake Trout morphotypes was found within littoral and pelagic zones, which raises the question of how such polymorphism can be sustained among opportunistic generalist morphotypes. Covariances of our morphological datasets were tested against δ13C and δ15N values. Patterns among morphotypes were mainly observed for δ15N. This link between ecological and morphological differentiation suggested that selection pressure(s) operate at the trophic level (δ15N), independent of habitat, rather than along the habitat‐foraging opportunity axis (δ13C). The spatial and temporal variability of resources in Arctic lakes, such as Great Bear Lake, may have favored the presence of multiple generalists showing different degrees of omnivory along a weak benthic–pelagic gradient. Morphs 1–3 had more generalist feeding habits using both benthic and pelagic habitats than Morph 4, which was a top‐predator specialist in the pelagic habitat. Evidence for frequent cannibalism in Great Bear Lake was found across all four morphotypes and may also contribute to polymorphism. We suggest that the multiple generalist morphs described here from Great Bear Lake are a unique expression of diversity due to the presumed constraints on the evolution of generalists and contrast with the development of multiple specialists, the standard response to intraspecific divergence.  相似文献

The presence of two morphotypes of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus was confirmed via morphological variation and otolith strontium (Sr) within three open-lake systems of southern Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada: Qinngu (LH001), Iqalugaarjuit Lake (PG082) and Qasigiat (PG015). Analysis of otolith Sr indicates that a component of each S. alpinus population within lakes LH001 and PG082 is migratory (large–maturing S. alpinus ), whereas another component is lake-resident (small–maturing S. alpinus ). Alternatively, small and large maturing S. alpinus may both inhabit tidal habitats during their lifetime in lake PG015. Three morphological characters were identified by principal factor analysis (PFA) as characters that were different between maturity groups for all lakes studied: eye diameter, pectoral fin length and pelvic fin length. As well, upper jaw length (LH001 and PG082) and fork depth (PG015) were identified in PFA as traits that differed between morphs. Univariate tests of morphological characters identified by PFA demonstrated maturity group differences with the exception of eye diameter in Lake PG015 and upper jaw length and pelvic fin length in lake LH001. No difference was found in the MANOVA test of upper and lower gill raker number between small–maturing and undeveloped fish within all lakes studied. Clear morphological variation observed between small–maturing and undeveloped fish in all three lakes of the study suggests ecological niche separation between morphotypes. This is the first documented case of lake-resident S. alpinus use of the tidal habitat in the presence of a migratory large–maturing morphotype.  相似文献

Among the Lake Tana large barbs of about 10 cm SL only representatives of the' acute'morphotype can be distinguished, in the size range 10–20 cm SL' bigmouth big eye' can be identified also. As for the rest, very few individuals can be confidently affiliated with a particular morphotype most of them looking like' intermedius'. Even within the range of 20–30 cm SL some individuals are still difficult to identify. Principal component analysis of cranial characters revealed discrete groups of morphotypes. Differences in both external and cranial characters of the morphotypes result from divergence which is most pronounced when fish are 4–5 years old and 20–25 cm SL. This divergence cannot be related exclusively with differences in the growth rates of individuals representing different morphotypes. Differences in food composition between the morphotypes probably increase in parallel with their morphological divergence. Differences between the morphotypes in the lateral line (11) and the gill rakers (Sb) counts were revealed using ANOVA. Comparison of the Lake Tana Barbus complex of forms with that previously known from Lake Lanao (Philippines) suggests that in both lakes the different forms arose sympatrically but that sympatric speciation in Lake Lanao has advanced further than in Lake Tana.  相似文献

Genetic divergence among morphotypes of Lake Tana (Ethiopia) barbs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The genus Barbus is a paraphyletic assemblage that includes three different ploidy levels: diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid. 'B.' intermedins , which inhabits Lake Tana (Ethiopia), is a hexaploid taxon that forms a 'species flock' consisting of at least 14 morphotypes. Thirty-one presumptive allozymic loci were analysed in a large sample of 'B.' intermedius. No diagnostic loci were observed between the morphotypes, but substantial differences in allele frequencies were found. One morphotype, Acute, differs significantly from the others. The presence of this genetic differentiation within the lake strongly suggests that the morphotypes are diverging lineages. Because of some parallel characteristics with cichlid species flocks, we put forward the hypothesis that the morphotypes of barbs in Lake Tana represent a species flock that originated via sympatric speciation with more rapid morphological than molecular differentiation. If the differentiation and the reproductive isolation are real, it is probable that the morphotypes already are or will soon reach the status of species.  相似文献

The systematica of coexisting morphotypes of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus , has been a matter of dispute ever since the days of Linnaeus. Widespread allelic variation at an esterase locus has led some investigators to propose that the morphotypes reflect a complex of at least three sibling species. We tested this hypothesis by examining 42 electrophoretically detectable loci in natural and transplanted charr populations from 15 localities in S Norway. The absolute values of Nei's genetic distance between morphotypes and populations are small (typically in the order of 0.001), and morphotype changes may occur without accompanying changes in frequencies of esterase alleles. Differentiation among localities explains far more of the total gene diversity than differences between morphotypes in the four cases of naturally occurring sympatric morphotypes examined. The data are consistent with an intraspecific population structuring based on locality, and the multiple species hypothesis is rejected.  相似文献

A suite of 10 microsatellite loci was used to examine genetic divergence between two sympatric morphs of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus (‘dark’ and ‘pale’) inhabiting Gander Lake, Newfoundland. Results can be summarized as follows: (1) the morphs are strongly reproductively isolated – gene flow–migration estimates were consistently low in long and short‐term evolutionary timescales of analysis; (2) intermorph divergence based on allele size (RST) was significantly larger than those based on allele state (θ) implying a cumulative effect of stepwise‐like mutations; (3) historical (coalescent) and current (linkage disequilibrium) point estimates of effective population size (Ne) were consistently higher for dark than for pale S. alpinus. The first and second findings lend support to the hypothesis that divergence between forms may have preceded the last glacial period (ending c. 12 000 years bp ). The third finding argues for significant differences in habitat quantity and quality between morphs, which were emphasized in a previous study. Overall, these analyses underscore the importance of genetic assessment and monitoring in the conservation of fish diversity, with emphasis on ‘rare’ or under‐represented forms among temperate species pairs.  相似文献

The embryonic-larval development (at 3°C) of a hybrid between sympatric lake forms of Arctic char Salvelinus alpinus complex (large females of Dryagin’s char x male goggle-eyed char) from the polar mountain Lake Sobachye (the Norilo-Pyasina water system, Taimyr) was studied. No morphological disturbances were found in the embryonic membrane during development. After hatching, because of yolk sac soaking and blood circulation disturbances along its vessels, about 15% of specimens perished. The most mass disturbances in the development of free embryos and larvae that were manifested in the body curvature, loss of mobility, and subsequent death of a greater proportion of specimens were caused by modifications of differentiation of mesenchymal cells responsible for the axial skeleton formation. It is suggested that anomalies in osteogenesis and a high variation of age when dermal cranial bones (praeoperculum and frontale) appear that bear seismosensory system canal are related to the conflict of genetic programs of the development of parental forms. The rate of embryonic larval development of hybrid specimens exceeds that in the lake small form of Arctic char from Lake Davatchan (Transbaikalia) reared under the same conditions. The reproductive isolation of sympatric Dryagin’s char and goggle-eyed char in Lake Sobachye is provided by both pre- and postcopulation mechanisms. A possible mechanism of formation of reproductive isolation of sympatric forms related to colonization by them of a deep-water biotope is discussed.  相似文献

Aim To test historical and current influences on the distributions of sympatric colour morphotypes in the coral reef fish genus Hypoplectrus. Location The Caribbean and surrounding tropical waters. These areas cover the entire distribution of the genus. Methods A large and extensive database of Hypoplectrus sightings was used to establish the distribution of colour morphotypes and test a long‐standing hypothesis regarding their origin. First, we considered the evidence for the previously proposed ‘population centre’ hypothesis, which suggests that current morphotype distributions reflect past conditions where these colour forms evolved in allopatry. Using morphotype sighting data, the existence of clusters in occurrence and density was tested. Second, we examined whether the observed patterns of morphotype co‐occurrence deviate from random expectations using null model simulations, within subregions of the distribution of the genus, to infer ecological influences on distribution. Results There is considerable variation in morphotype distribution, with even widespread morphotypes showing geographical clustering. There is also little evidence to suggest past or current geographical isolation, with only one of the 11 morphotypes (Hypoplectrus chlorurus) showing a density distribution that is consistent with the population centre hypothesis. Null model analyses show that variation in local morphotype co‐occurrence is typically significantly lower than expected under random dispersal conditions. Main conclusions Our results strongly suggest that morphotype co‐occurrence is not random, but there is no evidence to suggest a past allopatric radiation in Hypoplectrus colour. Current distributions are likely to be driven by competitive interactions and/or habitat preferences. Our study highlights the value of the Hypoplectrus species complex as a system for the study of speciation in the marine environment, and implies that these closely related morphotypes have ecological relevance rather than being simple colour variants of a single polymorphic species.  相似文献

The morphological and physiological differences between two morphotypes of Z. noltii Hornem. were studied in the intertidal meadows on the south-western Iberian Peninsula (Palmones river estuary and Ria Formosa). A small-leaved morphotype (SM) grows mainly at high intertidal sites, meadow edges or in recently deposited sandbanks, whereas a large-leaved morphotype (LM) generally thrives in well-structured beds or in deeper places. This study deals with the morphological, biochemical and physiological differences between these morphotypes as well as the ecological implications of the occurrence of different morphotypes in the same meadow. Shoot length, leaf width, rhizome internode length, roots per node, root length, leaf nutrient and pigment contents, and photosynthetic rates of both morphotypes were compared. The below-ground architecture (root and rhizome complex) of both morphotypes was more developed in sites characterized by higher hydrodynamics and/or a lower nitrogen content in sediments. Both morphotypes showed similar values for photosynthetic efficiency, dark respiration rate and compensation irradiance. On the other hand, the net photosynthetic capacity was much greater (5-fold) for the SM. This difference could explain the greater growth rate and faster leaf turnover rate of the SM compared with the LM. The occurrence of the SM in newly settled areas (and in the meadow edges) could be explained on the basis of its higher growth rate, which would allow a faster spreading of the meadow and/or better recovery after burial resulting from stormy weathers. The taxonomical relationship of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii and Raphidiopsis mediterranea was studied by morphological and 16S rRNA gene diversity analyses of natural populations from Lake Kastoria, Greece. Samples were obtained during a bloom (23,830 trichomes mL−1) in August 2003. A high diversity of apical cell, trichome, heterocyte and akinete morphology, trichome fragmentation and reproduction was observed. Trichomes were grouped into three dominant morphotypes: the typical and the non-heterocytous morphotype of C. raciborskii and the typical morphotype of R. mediterranea. A morphometric comparison of the dominant morphotypes showed significant differences in mean values of cell and trichome sizes despite the high overlap in the range of the respective size values. Additionally, two new morphotypes representing developmental stages of the species are described while a new mode of reproduction involving a structurally distinct reproductive cell is described for the first time in planktic Nostocales. A putative life-cycle, common for C. raciborskii and R. mediterranea is proposed revealing that trichome reproduction of R. mediterranea gives rise both to R. mediterranea and C. raciborskii non-heterocytous morphotypes. The phylogenetic analysis of partial 16S rRNA gene (ca. 920 bp) of the co-existing Cylindrospermopsis and Raphidiopsis morphotypes revealed only one phylotype which showed 99.54% similarity to R. mediterranea HB2 (China) and 99.19% similarity to C. raciborskii form 1 (Australia). We propose that all morphotypes comprised stages of the life cycle of C. raciborkii whereas R. mediterranea from Lake Kastoria (its type locality) represents non-heterocytous stages of Cylindrospermopsis complex life cycle.  相似文献

Marine mammals often exhibit significant sexual segregation in their diet and habitat use but these differences have not been studied systematically in historic or ancient populations due to the difficulties associated with determining the sex of skeletal elements based on gross morphology. Using a combined ancient DNA and stable isotope approach, we document a sexual difference in the foraging ecology of late 19th century beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) from the Canadian High Arctic. Using two PCR assays that coamplify fragments of the Y-linked SRY and X-linked ZFX genes, we assigned reproducible sex identities to 35 beluga specimens. This provided a basis for investigating sex-specific differences in foraging ecology using stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses of bone collagen. These isotopic data demonstrate that although both males and females primarily consumed Arctic cod, males utilized a wider range of prey than females, feeding on high trophic level benthic prey (sculpins) to a greater extent. Because bone collagen integrates prey isotopic compositions over the course of several years these sex-based differences in beluga bone collagen isotopic compositions reflect long-term and sustained sexual differences in foraging.  相似文献

Resident Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, are widespread throughout the island of Newfoundland. This study examines aspects of the biology and spatial and temporal distributions of the charr of Gander Lake, the third largest in Newfoundland (surface area = 11320ha, maximum depth = 288m, mean depth = 105.4m). The deepest part of the lake is approximately 258m below sea level. The lake is well oxygenated from the surface to the bottom during all seasons. Sampling was conducted with Lundgren multiple-mesh experimental gillnets and baited hooks. There appears to be two morphs present, based on colour (dark and pale) and certain meristic characteristics. Dark charr were caught mainly in benthic nets (at depths from 1 to 100m inclusive) with only a few pelagic captures. Pale charr were caught only in benthic nets at depths between 20 and 100m inclusive. The maximum depth sampled was 196m, but there was no catch. There was a tendency for dark charr to be found in deeper, cooler water as the upper water column and inshore areas warmed during summer. There was no apparent trend in size of charr with depth sampled. Dark and pale charr both fed on benthic macroinvertebrates; sticklebacks were consumed only by dark charr and the importance of this prey item increased with size of predator. Zooplankton and surface food were not utilised by Gander Lake charr. Results of the study are compared with findings reported for other water bodies in Newfoundland and Labrador, North America, and Europe, particularly Loch Ness which has similarities in morphometry and trophic status to Gander Lake.  相似文献

Biological data from 66 populations of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, from eastern North America were analysed to test the applicability of the countergradient hypothesis as an explanation of differences in seasonally adjusted growth rates. Samples were obtained along a 37° latitudinal gradient and partitioned among anadromous, normal lacustrine, and dwarf lacustrine Arctic charr morphotypes. Models relating length-at-age or age-specific growth rates to latitude were estimated for each morphotype. Length-at-age declined with latitude for anadromous and lacustrine charr. Age-specific growth rates also varied with latitude, particularly for normal lacustrine charr. Results of analyses provide support for the countergradient hypothesis in growth performance of normal lacustrine morphotypes, where northern populations compensate for the shorter growth season with a greater rate of growth than southern populations. Anadromous charr exhibited equivocal evidence of countergradient variation, while results for dwarf lacustrine Arctic charr populations were inconclusive owing to the limited range of ages, and latitudes for which data were available.  相似文献

1. Adaptive divergence in sympatry is supposed to be inhibited by the homogenizing role of gene flow. However, studies continue to uncover examples of sympatric divergence. In this study, two divergent phenotypes in a complex of four syntopic gall midge morphotypes [nominally Asteromyia carbonifera Osten Saken, Diptera: Cecidomyiidae: Alycaulini] are characterised. The first is a behavioural phenotype governing within‐host tissue preference and the second is a trait governing accessory‐gland carotenoid quality and quantity. 2. One gall morphotype (crescents) lay most of their eggs on mature tissue whereas the other three gall morphotypes oviposit only on young emerging leaves. Ecological maintenance of this divergent trait appears to be driven by enemy‐reduced space. That is, nearly 40% of the crescent morphotype galls that develop high on the plant are attacked by the egg parasitoid Platygaster solidaginis Ashmed, whereas those low on the plant are relatively protected. 3. All morphotypes contain carotenoids in their accessory glands, but the quality and quantity of these pigments differs significantly between the morphotypes and is positively associated with the probability of parasitism by P. solidaginis. 4. Larval salivary glands also contain carotenoids and the plant hormone abscisic acid, which in plants is synthesized from carotenoid precursors and is involved in regulating plant defences. This hormone may facilitate gall development and influence gall morphology. 5. Ecological fitness trade‐offs between carotenoids, parasitoid attack, and plant resistance may be fostering adaptive divergence in ovipositional phenotypes and sympatric speciation in this complex of gall midge morphotypes.  相似文献

The chemical composition of shells of the planktonic foraminifer Globigerinoides ruber (white) is frequently used to determine past sea surface conditions. Recently, it has been shown that arbitrarily defined morphotypes within this species exhibit different chemical and isotopic signatures. Here, we investigate the occurrence through time and in space of morphological types of G. ruber (white) in late Quaternary and Holocene sediments of the central and the eastern Mediterranean Sea. In 115 samples representing two distinct time intervals (MIS 1–2 and MIS 9–12) at ODP Site 964 and the piston core GeoTü-SL96, we have defined three morphological types within this species and determined their relative abundances and stable isotopic composition. A quantitative analysis of morphological variation within G. ruber (white) in four samples revealed that the subjectively defined morphotypes occupy separate segments of a continuous and homogenous morphospace. We further show that the abundance of the morphotypes changes significantly between glacials and interglacials and that the three morphotypes of G. ruber show significant offsets in their stable isotopic composition. These offsets are consistent within glacial and interglacial stages but their sign is systematically reversed between the two Sites. Since the isotopic shifts among the three G. ruber morphotypes are systematic and often exceed 1‰, their understanding is essential for the interpretation of all G. ruber-based proxy records for the paleoceanographic development of the Mediterranean during the late Quaternary.  相似文献

During the wet season, two sympatric species of primates,Alouatta palliata (mantled howlers) andCebus capucinus (white-faced capuchins), were assayed for feeding niche differences through behavioral and habitat use patterns at Refugio de Fauna Silvestre Curu in Costa Rica. Differences in the use of relative diameter and thickness of branches and five different modes of feeding were compared between the species. White-faced capuchins used more manipulative modes of obtaining food, a wider range of arboreal habitat, and had a more diverse diet than mantled howlers. Mantled howlers may be more restricted than white-faced capuchins in arboreal microhabitat use due to their possible need for large support branches during feeding bouts and resting periods. We report that differences in feeding behaviors, diet, and arboreal habitat use seem to play a large role in separating these species niches.  相似文献

We examined foraging behavior (microhabitat use and feeding behavior) in a trophically polymorphic cichlid fish, Herichthys minckleyi, to address several questions regarding resource partitioning in this threatened species. These include: (1) do morphotypes demonstrate different foraging behaviors? (2) do individuals within a morphotype vary in their foraging behavior (e.g. are some individuals specialists, only using a subset of available resources, while other are generalists)? (3) do foraging behaviors vary between isolated pools? (4) do foraging behaviors vary across seasons? We quantified microhabitat use and feeding behavior for over 100 individuals (of two morphotypes) feeding freely in two isolated pools (populations) and across two seasons (winter and summer). We found differences in foraging behavior between morphotypes and individual specializations within morphotypes; i.e. some individuals specialize on certain food resources by using a few feeding behaviors within a subset of microhabitats, whereas others employ a range feeding behaviors across many microhabitats. Foraging behavior also varied between pools and across seasons. This spatial and temporal variation in foraging behavior and resource use may serve to maintain this polymorphism, as the relative fitness of the each morph may vary over space and time.  相似文献
