Polyporus accommodates morphologically heterogeneous species and is divided into six infrageneric groups based on macromorphological characters. On the other hand allied genera have macro- and microscopic characters similar to those of Polyporus. The phylogenetic relationships of Polyporus and allied genera were established from sequences of RNA polymerase II second largest subunit (RPB2), nuclear ribosomal large subunit (nucLSU) and mitochondrial ATPase subunit 6 (ATP6). The molecular phylogenetic trees confirmed that Polyporus is a polyphyletic genus and recognized six major clades (1-6) containing species of Polyporus and several allied genera. Among the clades one contained three infrageneric groups of Polyporus and two allied genera, Datronia and Pseudofavolus while one other contained group Polyporellus and Lentinus. Five of the six major clades contained species belonging to a single infrageneric group, Favolus, Melanopus, Polyporellus or Polyporus. This suggests that morphological characters used to define these groups have phylogenetic significance and reveals the need for a taxonomic revision of Polyporus and its allied genera.  相似文献

Sperm ultrastructure of five teiid lizards (Callopistes flavipunctatus, Crocodilurus amazonicus, Dicrodon guttulatum, Dracaena guianensis, and Teius oculatus), and the gymnophthalmid Cercosaura ocellata is described for the first time. Comparisons of sperm ultrastructure among these species and with those of previously examined teiids and gymnophthalmids revealed that the two groups of Teiioidea (Gymnophthalmidae and Teiidae), and the two subfamilies of Teiidae (Teiinae and Tupinambinae) could be distinguished on the basis of sperm ultrastructure data. Significant differences in sperm dimensions between Cnemidophorus and Aspidoscelis support the recent splitting of these two lineages into different genera. Our results revealed high levels of inter-generic variability in sperm ultrastructure within Teiidae, which produces a data set useful in analyzing relationships between genera and families. In phylogenetic analyses, however, sampling multiple species within teiid genera is essential and recording sperm measurements may profitably complement qualitative ultrastructural characters, maximizing the information content of these structures.  相似文献

We conducted partitioned and combined Bayesian and parsimony phylogenetic analyses of corytophanid lizards (Iguania) using mtDNA, gross morphology, and sperm ultrastructure data sets. Bayesian and parsimony hypotheses showed little disagreement. The combined analysis, but not any of the partitioned ones, showed strong support for the monophyly of Corytophanidae and its three genera, Basiliscus , Corytophanes , and Laemanctus . Basiliscus is the sister taxon of a well-supported clade formed by Corytophanes and Laemanctus . The relationships of species within Basiliscus and Corytophanes received weak support, regardless of the method used. We defend those relationships as feasible and open to further testing. Data derived from the ultrastructure of spermatozoa are potentially a good source of characters for systematic inferences of Iguania and its major lineages. A Brooks Parsimony Analysis based on the geographic distributions of corytophanids and the phylogenetic tree obtained from the combined analysis suggested a Central American origin of the group, a recent colonization of northern South America, and the role of epeirogenic uplifts and the formation of lowlands during the late Tertiary in the differentiation of corytophanids.  相似文献

Based on several structural and biological characteristics, the Cynipoidea can be divided into two groups, 'macrocynipoids' and 'microcynipoids'. The macrocynipoids (i.e. the family Liopteridae and the genera Austrocynips, Eileenella, Heteribalia and Ibalia ) are generally large insects that parasitize wood- or cone-boring insect larvae. The microcynipoids are smaller insects that are either phytophagous gall inducers and inquilines (Cynipidae) or parasitoids of larvae of Hymenoptera, Neuroptera or Diptera (Figitidae sensu lato , including the families Eucoilidae, Charipidae and Anacharitidae). The phylogenetic relationships among genera of macrocynipoids and between these and a sample of four genera representing the Figitidae and Cynipidae were examined by parsimony analysis of 110 external morphological characters of adults. Within the macrocynipoids, three monophyletic lineages emerged, classified here as different families: the Austrocynipidae, with a single species, Austrocynips mirabilis , the only cynipoid with a true pterostigma; the Ibaliidae, including the genera Eileenella, Ibalia and Heteribalia ; and the Liopteridae, comprising the remaining genera of macrocynipoids. The analysis further supported the monophyly of the microcynipoids and indicated that the macrocynipoids form a paraphyletic group relative to the microcynipoids, with the shortest tree suggesting the relationship (Austrocynipidae, (Ibaliidae, (Liopteridae, microcynipoids))). These results imply that cynipoids were originally parasitoids of wood-boring insect larvae and that the other modes of life evolved secondarily within the group.  相似文献

Earlier studies indicate a strong correlation of pollen morphology and ultrastructure with taxonomy in Loranthaceae. Using high-resolution light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy imaging of the same pollen grains, we document pollen types of 35 genera including 15 studied for the first time. Using a molecular phylogenetic framework based on currently available sequence data with good genus-coverage, we reconstruct trends in the evolution of Loranthaceae pollen and pinpoint traits of high diagnostic value, partly confirming earlier intuitive hypotheses based on morphological observations. We find that pollen morphology in Loranthaceae is strongly linked to phylogenetic relationships. Some pollen types are diagnostic for discrete genera or evolutionary lineages, opening the avenue to recruit dispersed fossil pollen as age constraints for dated phylogenies and as independent data for testing biogeographic scenarios; so far based exclusively on modern-day data. Correspondences and discrepancies between palynological and molecular data and current taxonomic/systematic concepts are identified and suggestions made for future palynological and molecular investigations of Loranthaceae.  相似文献

Mature spermatozoa belonging to four salamander species, Salamandrina terdigitata, Triturus alpestris, Triturus carnifex and Triturus vulgaris, have been investigated by electron microscopy. The sperm ultrastructure of these species was compared with that of previously examined urodeles (36 species and 20 genera) and with that of anurans and caecilians. Many phylogenetic considerations may be inferred as a consequence of comparative spermatology. Urodela appears to be a monophyletic order characterized by three sperm synapomorphies: the acrosomal barb, nuclear ridge and marginal filament. Cryptobranchoidea are confirmed to form a monophyletic suborder having two synapomorphic characters: absence of mitochondria in the tail, and cylindrical shape of the tail axial rod. Within the family Salamandridae, sperm morphology confirms the phylogenetic distance between Salamandrina and Triturus, as already pointed out on the basis of molecular and morphological characters. The very complex ultrastructure of spermatozoa confirms a previous opinion that internal fertilization is the ancestral condition of the Amphibia.  相似文献

Highly diversified colorations among springtails (Collembola) have been widely used for species diagnosis, but their phylogenetic significance is poorly known. We addressed this issue in the largest Entomobryinae genus Entomobrya, which possesses variable color patterns among species. The relationships within the genus and to other genera have also rarely been studied. Based on material mainly from China, we have conducted a multilocus phylogeny and topology tests with likelihood and Bayesian algorithms, and accordingly demonstrated the non-monophyly of Chinese Entomobrya. The division of five clades, including Entomobrya and several related genera, coincided well with five types of colorations, respectively. Further analyses of divergence time and historical biogeography revealed that Chinese Entomobrya originated mainly from Palearctic (northern and western) China in the Paleocene and Eocene. This study highlights the great phylo? genetic values as well as taxonomic uses of coloration in Chinese Entomobrya. Multiple phylogenetic and biogeographic origins of Entomobrya imply its complicated relationships with both scaled and unsealed genera of Entomobryinae.  相似文献

MANNINGJ. C. & GOLDBLATT, P., 1991. Systematic and phylogenetic significance of the seed coat in the shrubby African Iridaceae, Nivenia, Klattia and Witsenia. The seeds of Nivenia, Klattia and Witsenia, a natural alliance within Nivenioideae, are among their most distinctive features, and seed number and shape constitute at least two synapomorphies for this monophyletic lineage. In this paper we survey the structure of the seed surface of five species of Nivenia and one each of Klattia and Witsenia by scanning electron microsopy (SEM), and study the development of the seed coat in a representative species of each of the three genera. Outgroups for comparison were selected from genera inside and outside the subfamily. The six genera of Nivenioideae are united in having a 3 (– 2) seriate outer integument but the shrubby genera are unique in the family in their tangentially flattened ovules which mature into depressed, flat, scutiform seeds. They display a range of variation in seed coat characters but are specialized in the subfamily and family in having a transparent outer integument. Other genera have pigmented deposits in the outer epidermis of the outer integument. Nivenia and Witsenia are further specialized in having a partially exfoliating outer integument. Klattia is unique among the shrubby genera in having deposits in the second layer of the tegmen, in retaining an intact outer epidermis of the tegmen, and in the fusiform shape of the epidermal cells and striate surface of the seed. Our results are incorporated in a cladogram that expresses our current understanding of the phylogenetic relationships of Nivenioideae.  相似文献

The phylogenetic interpretation of the nematode cuticle ultrastructure is reviewed within the framework of recent DNA-sequence data. In particular, the structure of the median and basal zones is discussed. Several structural elements of the cuticle seem to have arisen independently several times within the Nematoda and thus are highly homoplasious (e.g. the cortical or basal radial striae, spiral fibre layers and a fluid matrix with struts). Moreover, identifying the homology of the nematode cuticle ultrastructures is often very difficult at deep taxonomic levels. Hence, the cuticle appears to be unreliable regarding resolution of deep-level relationships in the Nematoda. However, at less inclusive taxonomic levels (e.g. families, genera, ...) the cuticle seems to be a more reliable phylogenetic marker.  相似文献

The large, tropical island of Borneo has some of the world's richest habitats for plant life, but faces increasing pressures from anthropogenic activities that threaten its biodiversity. With a good portion of the Bornean flora not critically studied, a comprehensive documentation of the numerous endemic taxa expected for the island is not yet complete. It is not known what the relative significance of endemic genera is compared to Bornean centres of endemism documented or predicted through modelling, and if they can inform current conservation plans. As a first step, we here present a synopsis of the endemic genera of Borneo, based on a comprehensive study of literature, herbarium specimens and distributional data, and an investigation of whether the genera have been included in molecular phylogenetic studies that confirm their monophyly. Such a review is timely since many generic delimitations have been shaped by molecular evidence used to test morphology-based taxonomy, while botanical collection and revisionary efforts continue. Our findings suggest that 65 vascular plant genera from 25 families may be considered endemic to Borneo. More than two-thirds (48) of these genera have had at least one species included in molecular phylogenetic studies, but of these, only 39 have been sufficiently sampled to be considered monophyletic with high confidence, or they are monotypic. Slightly over half (38) of the endemic genera are herbaceous. A majority of the genera have fruits or seeds specialised for dispersal by abiotic vectors, or unspecialised seeds. Almost two-thirds (42) of the endemic genera are monotypic, and some of these could represent relict lineages. We expect the current list of endemic genera to be relatively stable and aligned with recent taxonomic concepts, and that it serves to illuminate an interesting aspect of Borneo's unique assemblage of endemic species.  相似文献

The wing scale ultrastructure of the reflective under wing pattern found in many Argynnini butterflies are examined for all recognised genera and subgenera and compared to that of some basal Heliconiini. A true reflective pattern probably evolved once within the Argynnini. But the phylogenetic information in these structures is limited due to a high degree of homoplasy in the scale ultrastructure related to the reflective patterns. The degree of specialisation is also homoplastic. The general morphological modification responsible for the reflective patterns seems to be a “closing” of the large windows, which generally occupy most of the inter-ridge space on the abwing surface in the scales of higher Lepidoptera. The fact that the Argynnis niobe morphs with a silvery pattern have scales with ‘closed windows’ whereas the Argynnis niobe morphs without a silvery pattern have typical non-reflective scales with very large windows supports this conclusion. The degrees of modification of the scales, including whether both cover and ground scales or only cover scales are modified, are to some extent correlated to the degree of reflectiveness in the wing pattern. Boloria eunomia has, as the only species, more modified ground scales than cover scales.  相似文献

In this study, 30 strains of filamentous, non-heterocystous cyanobacteria from different habitats and different geographical regions assigned to diverse oscillatorian genera but here collectively referred to as members of the Phormidium group have been characterized using a polyphasic approach by comparing phenotypic and molecular characteristics. The phenotypic analysis dealt with cell and filament morphology, ultrastructure, phycoerythrin content, and complementary chromatic adaptation. The molecular phylogenetic analyses were based on sequences of the 16S rRNA gene and the adjacent intergenic transcribed spacer (ITS). The sequences were located on multiple branches of the inferred cyanobacterial 16S rRNA tree. For some, but not all, strains with identical 16S rDNA sequences, a higher level of discrimination was achieved by analyses of the less conserved ITS sequences. As shown for other cyanobacteria, no correlation was found between position of the strains in the phylogenetic tree and their geographic origin. Genetically similar strains originated from distant sites while other strains isolated from the same sampling site were in different phylogenetic clusters. Also the presence of phycoerythrin was not correlated with the strains’ position in the phylogenetic trees. In contrast, there was some correlation among inferred phylogenetic relationship, original environmental habitat, and morphology. Closely related strains came from similar ecosystems and shared the same morphological and ultrastructural features. Nevertheless, structural properties are insufficient in themselves for identification at the genus or species level since some phylogenetically distant members also showed similar morphological traits. Our results reconfirm that the Phormidium group is not phylogenetically coherent and requires revision.  相似文献

The genus Nothofagus is mainly distributed in South America and New Zealand. The present paper describes its pollen exine ultrastructure and compares the exine ultrastructure with that of the other genera of Fagaceae. The pollen grains were examined using ultrathin sectioning technique under transmission electron microscope. The study shows that the pollen exine ultrastructure of Nothofagus differs from that of the other genera of Fagaceae by its exine structure and thickness, type of aperture, and ornamentation. The pollen exine of Nothofagus is thin and possesses granular bacules, regular foot layer and tectum, spinulate ornamentation, and the endexine is usually visible at poral area, and 5~8 colpate. The pollen exine of the other genera of Fagaceae possesses entire bacules, irregular foot layer and tectum, granulate and tuberculate ornamentation, thicker endexine, and is 3-colporate ( 3-colpate or 3-colporoidate). The pollen exine ultrastructure of Nothofagus may belong to primitive type. The pollen exine ultrastructure data support Kuprianova’s opinion that Nothofagus should be separated from Fagaceae and established as a monogenetic family, i.e. Nothofa-gaceae.  相似文献

Recent phylogenetic studies of tetrasporalean exemplars using 18S rDNA revealed the extent of diversity among taxa in this non-monophyletic group (Booton et al. 1998). In particular, two distinct tetrasporalean lineages were identified; one group allied with chlamydomonadalean taxa and the other group comprising taxa now placed in a separate order, the Chaetopeltidales. Using these observations as a framework, a new investigation of diversity among a broader sampling of putative tetrasporalean genera (e.g. Asterococcus , Chloranomala , Chlorophysema , Gloeocystis , Gloeodendron , Palmella , Paulschulzia , Physocytium , Schizochlamys and Tetraspora ) was undertaken. Phylogenetic studies of both 18S and 26S rDNA were compared with ultrastructural investigations of vegetative cells. Molecular phylogenetic analyses corroborate the earlier 18S rDNA results, but also reveal additional diversity. The new data raise doubts regarding the monophyly of two genera, Palmella and Tetraspora. The new data also link two enigmatic green algal genera, Physocytium and Heterochlamydomonas , in a long-branch lineage within the Chlamydomonadales. Another enigmatic genus, Schizochlamys , is allied with Bracteacoccus in the Sphaeropleales. Lastly, Chloranomala is resolved as an ally of Paulschulzia , Tetraspora sp., and the green flagellate, Lobomonas. Comparison of pyrenoid ultrastructure generally supports the molecular phylogenetic analyses, suggesting that this non-molecular character will be a useful marker for broad phylogenetic studies of chlamydomonadalean taxa. Abstract. A cladistic analysis based on 33 morphological characters was performed for the 31 genera currently assigned to the order Macrodasyida (Gastrotricha). Outgroup analysis indicated that the order is monophyletic and that it is defined by the structure of the pharynx and the complex distribution of duo-gland adhesive organs. Of the 6 currently recognized families in Macrodasyida, our analysis confirmed that 4 families are monophyletic: Dactylopodolidae, Macrodasyidae, Thaumastodermatidae and Turbanellidae. Dactylopodolidae was further confirmed as the most basal family within the order based on the retention of several plesiomorphies. The other three families have well-defined autapomorphies but will require further investigation to increase inter- and intrafamilial phylogenetic resolution. Planodasyidae appeared to be a paraphyletic taxon with no obvious autapomorphies; genera clustered among members of a polyphyletic family, Lepidodasyidae. We recommend that future research on macrodasyidan phylogeny focus on issues of comparative morphology and ultrastructure in lesser-known taxa such as the Dactylopodolidae, and on the taxa Lepidodasyidae and Planodasyidae.  相似文献

We have previously documented multiple, independent origins of placentas in the fish family Poeciliidae. Here we summarize similar analyses of fishes in the family Zenarchopteridae. This family includes three live-bearing genera. Earlier studies documented the presence of superfetation, or the ability to carry multiple litters of young in different stages of development in the same ovary, in some species in all three genera. There is also one earlier report of matrotrophy, or extensive postfertilization maternal provisioning, in two of these genera. We present detailed life-history data for approximately half of the species in all three genera and combine them with the best available phylogeny to make inferences about the pattern of life-history evolution within this family. Three species of Hemirhamphodon have superfetation but lack matrotrophy. Most species in Nomorhamphus and Dermogenys either lack superfetation and matrotrophy or have both superfetation and matrotrophy. Our phylogenetic analysis shows that matrotrophy may have evolved independently in each genus. In Dermogenys, matrotrophic species produce fewer, larger offspring than nonmatrotrophic species. In Nomorhamphus; matrotrophic species instead produce more and smaller offspring than lecithotrophic species. However, the matrotrophic species in both genera have significantly smaller masses of reproductive tissue relative to their body sizes. All aspects of these results are duplicated in the fish family Poeciliidae. We discuss the possible adaptive significance of matrotrophy in the light of these new results. The two families together present a remarkable opportunity to study the evolution of a complex trait because they contain multiple, independent origins of the trait that often include close relatives that vary in either the presence or absence of the matrotrophy or in the degree to which matrotrophy is developed. These are the raw materials that are required for either an analysis of the adaptive significance of the trait or for studies of the genetic mechanisms that underlie the evolution of the trait.  相似文献

Aphelids are a poorly known group of parasitoids of algae that have raised considerable interest due to their pivotal phylogenetic position. Together with Cryptomycota and the highly derived Microsporidia, they have been recently re‐classified as the Opisthosporidia, which constitute the sister group to the fungi within the Holomycota. Despite their huge diversity, as revealed by molecular environmental studies, and their phylogenetic interest, only three genera have been described (Aphelidium, Amoeboaphelidium, and Pseudaphelidium), from which 18S rRNA gene sequences exist only for Amoeboaphelidium and Aphelidium species. Here, we describe the life cycle and ultrastructure of a new representative of Aphelida, Paraphelidium tribonemae gen. et sp. nov., and provide the first 18S rRNA gene sequence obtained for this genus. Molecular phylogenetic analysis indicates that Paraphelidium is distantly related to both Aphelidium and Amoebaphelidium, highlighting the wide genetic diversity of aphelids. Paraphelidium tribonemae has amoeboflagellate zoospores containing a lipid‐microbody complex, dictyosomes, and mitochondria with rhomboid cristae, which are also present in trophonts and plasmodia. The amoeboid trophont uses pseudopodia to feed from the host cytoplasm. Although genetically distinct, the genus Paraphelidium is morphologically indistinguishable from other aphelid genera and has zoospores able to produce lamellipodia with subfilopodia like those of Amoeboaphelidium.  相似文献
