In this paper, we propose a novel framework for IQ estimation using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data. In particular, we devise a new feature selection method based on an extended dirty model for jointly considering both element-wise sparsity and group-wise sparsity. Meanwhile, due to the absence of large dataset with consistent scanning protocols for the IQ estimation, we integrate multiple datasets scanned from different sites with different scanning parameters and protocols. In this way, there is large variability in these different datasets. To address this issue, we design a two-step procedure for 1) first identifying the possible scanning site for each testing subject and 2) then estimating the testing subject’s IQ by using a specific estimator designed for that scanning site. We perform two experiments to test the performance of our method by using the MRI data collected from 164 typically developing children between 6 and 15 years old. In the first experiment, we use a multi-kernel Support Vector Regression (SVR) for estimating IQ values, and obtain an average correlation coefficient of 0.718 and also an average root mean square error of 8.695 between the true IQs and the estimated ones. In the second experiment, we use a single-kernel SVR for IQ estimation, and achieve an average correlation coefficient of 0.684 and an average root mean square error of 9.166. All these results show the effectiveness of using imaging data for IQ prediction, which is rarely done in the field according to our knowledge.  相似文献

Vitamin B-12 is essential for the development and maintenance of a healthy nervous system. Brain development occurs primarily in utero and early infancy, but the role of maternal vitamin B-12 status during pregnancy on offspring cognitive function is unclear. In this study we assessed the effect of vitamin B-12 status in well-nourished pregnant women on the cognitive ability of their offspring in a UK birth cohort (ALSPAC). We then examined the association of SNPs in maternal genes FUT2 (rs492602) and TCN2 (rs1801198, rs9606756) that are related to plasma vitamin B-12, with offspring IQ. Observationally, there was a positive association between maternal vitamin B-12 intake and child’s IQ that was markedly attenuated after adjustment for potential confounders (mean difference in offspring IQ score per doubling of maternal B-12 intake, before adjustment: 2.0 (95% CI 1.3, 2.8); after adjustment: 0.7 (95% CI −0.04, 1.4)). Maternal FUT2 was weakly associated with offspring IQ: mean difference in IQ per allele was 0.9 (95% CI 0.1, 1.6). The expected effect of maternal vitamin B-12 on offspring IQ, given the relationships between SNPs and vitamin B-12, and SNPs and IQ was consistent with the observational result. Our findings suggest that maternal vitamin B-12 may not have an important effect on offspring cognitive ability. However, further examination of this issue is warranted.  相似文献

Studies on elevation gradients in Panama and Costa Rica have shown that leaf‐litter ants exhibit a mid‐elevation peak in diversity. This diversity pattern has been observed in other groups and regions, but uncertainty remains as to just how pervasive it is and what might explain it. Here we examine the robustness of the mid‐elevation peak in ant diversity across the entire Middle American corridor, from Veracruz, Mexico, to Costa Rica. We sampled 56 sites distributed throughout Middle America. All were in closed‐canopy evergreen wet forest, spanning 11° latitude, from near sea level to 2600 m elevation. Ants were extracted from 100 litter samples from each site and identified to genus or species. Model selection was performed on richness and diversity variables to test if ant diversity best fits a linear model or one allowing for a mid‐elevation peak. Linear models were also used to examine the relationships among diversity measures and temperature, precipitation, and seasonality. Species richness measures and diversity indices that incorporate relative abundance show a similar relationship to elevation throughout the region: a truncated bell curve with a mode near 400 m. A cubic relationship is statistically favored over quadratic or linear. Temperature is a significant correlate with diversity, but does not predict a bell‐curve. Precipitation and precipitation seasonality fail to explain much of the variability, and no combination of environmental variables predicts a bell curve. Potential causes of the truncated bell curve include lowland biotic attrition, mid‐point attractors, and ecotonal transitions from lowland to montane communities. Analysis of 17 subclades within ants mostly showed the same truncated curve but six clades were anomalous. Distinctive behavioral or historical features potentially explain their patterns.  相似文献

Box jellyfish respond to visual stimuli by changing the dynamics and frequency of bell contractions. In this study, we determined how the contrast and the dimming time of a simple visual stimulus affected bell contraction dynamics in the box jellyfish Tripedalia cystophora. Animals were tethered in an experimental chamber where the vertical walls formed the light stimuli. Two neighbouring walls were darkened and the contraction of the bell was monitored by high-speed video. We found that (1) bell contraction frequency increased with increasing contrast and decreasing dimming time. Furthermore, (2) when increasing the contrast and decreasing the dimming time pulses with an off-centred opening had a better defined direction and (3) the number of centred pulses decreased. Only weak effects were found on the relative diameter of the contracted bell and no correlation was found for the duration of bell contraction. Our observations show that visual stimuli modulate swim speed in T. cystophora by changing the swim pulse frequency. Furthermore, the direction of swimming is better defined when the animal perceives a high-contrast, or fast dimming, stimulus.  相似文献

Using a yeast-based assay, a previously unsuspected antiprion activity was found for imiquimod (IQ), a potent Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) agonist already used for clinical applications. The antiprion activity of IQ was first detected against yeast prions [PSI +] and [URE3], and then against mammalian prion both ex vivo in a cell-based assay and in vivo in a transgenic mouse model for prion diseases. In order to facilitate structure-activity relationship studies, we conducted a new synthetic pathway which provides a more efficient means of producing new IQ chemical derivatives, the activity of which was tested against both yeast and mammalian prions. The comparable antiprion activity of IQ and its chemical derivatives in the above life forms further emphasizes the conservation of prion controlling mechanisms throughout evolution. Interestingly, this study also demonstrated that the antiprion activity of IQ and IQ-derived compounds is independent from their ability to stimulate TLRs. Furthermore, we found that IQ and its active chemical derivatives inhibit the protein folding activity of the ribosome (PFAR) in vitro.  相似文献

The multisubunit RNA exosome complex is a major ribonuclease of eukaryotic cells that participates in the processing, quality control and degradation of virtually all classes of RNA in Eukaryota. All this is achieved by about a dozen proteins with only three ribonuclease activities between them. At first glance, the versatility of the pathways involving the exosome and the sheer multitude of its substrates are astounding. However, after fifteen years of research we have some understanding of how exosome activity is controlled and applied inside the cell. The catalytic properties of the eukaryotic exosome are fairly well described and attention is now drawn to how the interplay between these activities impacts cell physiology. Also, it has become evident that exosome function relies on many auxiliary factors, which are intensely studied themselves. In this way, the focus of exosome research is slowly leaving the test tube and moving back into the cell.The exosome also has an interesting evolutionary history, which is evident within the eukaryotic lineage but only fully appreciated when considering similar protein complexes found in Bacteria and Archaea. Thus, while we keep this review focused on the most comprehensively described yeast and human exosomes, we shall point out similarities or dissimilarities to prokaryotic complexes and proteins where appropriate.The article is divided into three parts. In Part One we describe how the exosome is built and how it manifests in cells of different organisms. In Part Two we detail the enzymatic properties of the exosome, especially recent data obtained for holocomplexes. Finally, Part Three presents an overview of the RNA metabolism pathways that involve the exosome. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled: RNA Decay mechanisms.  相似文献

Information Quality (IQ) is a critical factor for the success of many activities in the information age, including the development of data warehouses and implementation of data mining. The issue of IQ risk is recognized during the process of data mining; however, there is no formal methodological approach to dealing with such issues.

Consequently, it is essential to measure the risk of IQ in a data warehouse to ensure success in implementing data mining. This article presents a methodology to determine three IQ risk characteristics: accuracy, comprehensiveness, and non-membership. The methodology provides a set of quantitative models to examine how the quality risks of source information affect the quality for information outputs produced using the relational algebra operations: Restriction, Projection, and Cubic product. It can be used to determine how quality risks associated with diverse data sources affect the derived data. The study also develops a data cube model and associated algebra to support IQ risk operations.  相似文献

The son, a creativity researcher, generally echoes Richardson and Norgate's arguments, arguing for the construct of creativity to be considered as a supplement to IQ tests for predicting work success. The Dimitrov–Dimitrova (D–D) model generates a single fibre action potential (SFAP) as the convolution of an excitation function and a filter impulse function. We propose a method to estimate the parameters involved in these functions from a SFAP waveform (inverse problem) and call it Identification Procedure. The Identification Procedure comprises two parts. The present paper, Part I, is centred on the estimation of the radial distance, r, and the fibre diameter, d, of a given SFAP. To this end we develop a technique which we call the candidate pair method (CP-method), and we test it on fibrillation potentials (FPs) as experimental data. We found that the D–D model cannot synthesize all the SFAP waveforms observed in the experimental recordings, but in the cases where it can, the CP-method then provides the values of r and d that are more likely to have synthesized the SFAP. Having a method that provides information about the fibre diameter straight from a SFAP waveform is very desirable as this parameter has clinical and physiological relevance. Moreover, the CP-method plays a major role in the Identification Procedure that is carried out in Part II.  相似文献

Innovation is often assumed to be the work of a talented few, whose products are passed on to the masses. Here, we argue that innovations are instead an emergent property of our species'' cultural learning abilities, applied within our societies and social networks. Our societies and social networks act as collective brains. We outline how many human brains, which evolved primarily for the acquisition of culture, together beget a collective brain. Within these collective brains, the three main sources of innovation are serendipity, recombination and incremental improvement. We argue that rates of innovation are heavily influenced by (i) sociality, (ii) transmission fidelity, and (iii) cultural variance. We discuss some of the forces that affect these factors. These factors can also shape each other. For example, we provide preliminary evidence that transmission efficiency is affected by sociality—languages with more speakers are more efficient. We argue that collective brains can make each of their constituent cultural brains more innovative. This perspective sheds light on traits, such as IQ, that have been implicated in innovation. A collective brain perspective can help us understand otherwise puzzling findings in the IQ literature, including group differences, heritability differences and the dramatic increase in IQ test scores over time.  相似文献

Obtaining accurate kinematic data of animals is essential for many biological studies and bio-inspired engineering. Many animals, however, are either too large or too delicate to transport to controlled environments where accurate kinematic data can be easily obtained. Often, in situ recordings are the only means available but are often subject to multi-axis motion and relative magnification changes with time leading to large discrepancies in the animal kinematics. Techniques to compensate for these artifacts were applied to a large jellyfish, Cyanea capillata, freely swimming in ocean waters. The bell kinematics were captured by digitizing exumbrella profiles for two full swimming cycles. Magnification was accounted for by tracking a reference point on the ocean floor and by observing the C. capillata exumbrella arclength in order to have a constant scale through the swimming cycles. A linear fit of the top bell section was used to find the body angle with respect to the camera coordinate system. Bell margin trajectories over two swimming cycles confirmed the accuracy of the correction techniques. The corrected profiles were filtered and interpolated to provide a set of time-dependent points along the bell. Discrete models of the exumbrella were used to analyze the bell kinematics. Exumbrella discretization was conducted using three different methods. Fourier series were fitted to the discretized models and subsequently used to analyze the bell kinematics of the C. capillata. The analysis showed that the bell did not deform uniformly over time with different segments lagging behind each other. Looping of the bell trajectory between contraction and relaxation was also present through most of the exumbrella. The bell margin had the largest looping with an outer path during contraction and inner path during relaxation. The subumbrella volume was approximated based on the exumbrella kinematics and was found to increase during contraction.  相似文献

Aim The photosynthesis-light response curve is the most commonly used method to explore the relationship between photosynthetically active radiation and the net photosynthetic rate, because it is more effective to reflect the plant photosynthetic characteristics. And it is very meaningful for researchers to choose a suitable summer corn (Zea mays) photosynthetic model and optimal the models of photosynthesis-light response curve by analyzing the differences between simulation and observation in each growth period of some plant. So the object of this paper was to propose some useful suggestions for the choice of summer corn photosynthetic modes and the optimization of the photosynthetic light response curves model in further.Methods In this paper, three typical photosynthetic models were used to fitting the photosynthetic light response curve for upper leaf, leaf at ear of grain and lower leaf of summer corn during bell and milk period. And then the fitting degree of each model was compared to the measured data. Photosynthetic active radiation was divided into three parts, and the fitting residual errors of these three models were analyzed individually.Important findings The photosynthetic characteristic parameters such as maximum net photosynthetic rate (Pnmax), saturated light intensity (Isat) and dark respiration rate (Rd) decreased constantly with a top-down leaf position and the parameters at milk stage were generally lower than the bell stage. Each growth period and leaf position could fit the curve, but some deviation exists for the Pnmax and Isat in the rectangular hyperbolic model and the non-rectangular hyperbolic model. The results of curve fitting residual showed that the simulation values from Ye Zi-Piao model were closest to the actual values, and especially for the high photosynthetically active radiation section.  相似文献

通过对光合-光响应曲线的研究来探索光合有效辐射与净光合速率的关系是一种非常重要的手段。合适的模型才能较好地反映植株的光合特性。分析由于生育期与叶位的不同而导致各模型拟合值与实测值差异的变化性以及不同光合有效辐射强度下各模型的适用性, 可为夏玉米(Zea mays)光合模型的选择和光合-光响应曲线模型的进一步优化提供参考。该研究运用3种典型的光合模型对夏玉米大喇叭口期与乳熟期上部叶、穗位叶与下部叶做光合-光响应曲线拟合, 对比各模型的拟合度以及对实测数据的反映情况, 并将光合有效辐射分为3段, 分析3种模型在每段的拟合残差。结果表明: 最大净光合速率(Pnmax)、饱和光强(Isat)、暗呼吸速率(Rd)等光合特征参数值随叶位由上而下呈降低趋势, 乳熟期普遍小于大喇叭口期; 不同生育期和叶位3种模型均可以拟合, 直角双曲线模型、非直角双曲线模型对PnmaxIsat的拟合值与实测值有一定的偏差; 通过残差分析表明叶子飘模型的拟合值与实测值最为相符, 尤其对高光部分的拟合表现出独有的优越性。  相似文献

Down syndrome (DS) is the most common chromosomal abnormality and is associated with an extra copy of the chromosome 21. Although several markers are commonly used during pregnancy for the screening of DS, the definitive diagnosis is based on karyotype after amniocentesis, which is an expensive and laborious analysis. S100B is an astrocyte protein which had its gene mapped to the long arm of chromosome 21. Previous preliminary reports have found increased levels of this protein in the amniotic fluid of DS gestations. Aiming to achieve a simpler and cheaper test then karyotype to perform prenatal diagnosis of DS, here we have extended our previous studies and evaluated the real usefulness of amniotic S100B measurement for prenatal DS diagnosis. We have measured S100B in amniotic fluid of 96 pregnancies with DS and of 50 normal pregnancies. Pregnancies with DS presented significantly higher amniotic fluid S100B levels (M = 1.16 ng/mL; IQ = 0.83/1.78) than normal pregnancies (M = 0.51 ng/mL; IQ = 0.38/0.83) (p < 0.0001). A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was performed to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of S100B for DS diagnosis, and presented an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.82, indicating that S100B could be a reliable marker of DS. Moreover, values above 1.67 ng/mL were present only in DS fetuses, representing about 30% of affected pregnancies. However, as an overlap of values was observed between normal and DS gestations, we concluded that amniotic S100B alone is not a good test to discard DS diagnosis.  相似文献

2-Amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ) is a mutagenic/carcinogenic compound formed from meat and fish during cooking. Following ingestion, IQ is metabolized mainly by liver xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes, but intestinal bacteria may also contribute to its biotransformation. The aim of this study was to investigate the metabolism of IQ by the human intestinal microbiota. Following incubation of IQ (200 μM) under anoxic conditions with 100-fold dilutions of stools freshly collected from three healthy volunteers, we quantified residual IQ by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis and characterized the production of IQ metabolites by in situ 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopic analysis of crude incubation media. In addition, we looked for IQ-degrading bacteria by screening collection strains and by isolating new strains from the cecal contents of human-microbiota-associated rats gavaged with IQ on a regular basis. HPLC and 1H-NMR analyses showed that the three human microbiota degraded IQ with different efficiencies (range, 50 to 91% after 72 h of incubation) and converted it into a unique derivative, namely, 7-hydroxy-IQ. We found 10 bacterial strains that were able to perform this reaction: Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron (n = 2), Clostridium clostridiiforme (n = 3), Clostridium perfringens (n = 1), and Escherichia coli (n = 4). On the whole, our results indicate that bacteria belonging to the predominant communities of the human intestine are able to produce 7-hydroxy-IQ from IQ. They also suggest interindividual differences in the ability to perform this reaction. Whether it is a metabolic activation is still a matter of debate, since 7-hydroxy-IQ has been shown to be a direct-acting mutagen in the Ames assay but not carcinogenic in laboratory rodents.  相似文献

A new, relatively simple method for determining the kinematic properties of jellyfish is presented. The bell movement of the scyphomedusa (Aurelia sp.) during its pulsation cycle was analysed using computer-aided visualization. Sequences of video images of individual Aurelia in a large aquarium were taken using a standard video camera. The images were then processed to obtain time series of the relative positions of selected points on the surface of the medusa’s bell. The duration of the bell relaxation was longer than that of the bell contraction, thereby confirming published results. In addition, the area of the exumbrellar surface of Aurelia increased during bell relaxation by more than 1.3-times that of the exumbrellar surface area during the maximum contraction of the bell. The volume change during the bell pulsation cycle was also measured using the same visualization method. Significant changes, of up to 50%, in the subumbrellar cavity volume were revealed while, in contrast, the volume between the exumbrellar and subumbrellar surfaces generally remained unchanged during the entire pulsation cycle of the bell. Comparison of the time series of the exumbrellar surface area and of the subumbrellar cavity volume indicated that the change of volume takes place before the change of the surface area of the bell. In many cases, the computation of a neural system can be reduced to a receptive field, or a set of linear filters, and a thresholding function, or gain curve, which determines the firing probability; this is known as a linear/nonlinear model. In some forms of sensory adaptation, these linear filters and gain curve adjust very rapidly to changes in the variance of a randomly varying driving input. An apparently similar but previously unrelated issue is the observation of gain control by background noise in cortical neurons: the slope of the firing rate versus current (f-I) curve changes with the variance of background random input. Here, we show a direct correspondence between these two observations by relating variance-dependent changes in the gain of f-I curves to characteristics of the changing empirical linear/nonlinear model obtained by sampling. In the case that the underlying system is fixed, we derive relationships relating the change of the gain with respect to both mean and variance with the receptive fields derived from reverse correlation on a white noise stimulus. Using two conductance-based model neurons that display distinct gain modulation properties through a simple change in parameters, we show that coding properties of both these models quantitatively satisfy the predicted relationships. Our results describe how both variance-dependent gain modulation and adaptive neural computation result from intrinsic nonlinearity.  相似文献

Evolutionary constraints which limit the forces produced during bell contractions of medusae affect the overall medusan morphospace such that jet propulsion is limited to only small medusae. Cubomedusae, which often possess large prolate bells and are thought to swim via jet propulsion, appear to violate the theoretical constraints which determine the medusan morphospace. To examine propulsion by cubomedusae, we quantified size related changes in wake dynamics, bell shape, swimming and turning kinematics of two species of cubomedusae, Chironex fleckeri and Chiropsella bronzie. During growth, these cubomedusae transitioned from using jet propulsion at smaller sizes to a rowing-jetting hybrid mode of propulsion at larger sizes. Simple modifications in the flexibility and kinematics of their velarium appeared to be sufficient to alter their propulsive mode. Turning occurs during both bell contraction and expansion and is achieved by generating asymmetric vortex structures during both stages of the swimming cycle. Swimming characteristics were considered in conjunction with the unique foraging strategy used by cubomedusae.  相似文献

Retinal networks must adapt constantly to best present the ever changing visual world to the brain. Here we test the hypothesis that adaptation is a result of different mechanisms at several synaptic connections within the network. In a companion paper (Part I), we showed that adaptation in the photoreceptors (R1–R6) and large monopolar cells (LMC) of the Drosophila eye improves sensitivity to under-represented signals in seconds by enhancing both the amplitude and frequency distribution of LMCs'' voltage responses to repeated naturalistic contrast series. In this paper, we show that such adaptation needs both the light-mediated conductance and feedback-mediated synaptic conductance. A faulty feedforward pathway in histamine receptor mutant flies speeds up the LMC output, mimicking extreme light adaptation. A faulty feedback pathway from L2 LMCs to photoreceptors slows down the LMC output, mimicking dark adaptation. These results underline the importance of network adaptation for efficient coding, and as a mechanism for selectively regulating the size and speed of signals in neurons. We suggest that concert action of many different mechanisms and neural connections are responsible for adaptation to visual stimuli. Further, our results demonstrate the need for detailed circuit reconstructions like that of the Drosophila lamina, to understand how networks process information.  相似文献
