Since the earlier anaerobic treatment systems, the design concepts were improved from classic reactors like septic tanks and anaerobic ponds, to modern high rate reactor configurations like anaerobic filters, UASB, EGSB, fixed film fluidized bed and expanded bed reactors, and others. In this paper, anaerobic reactors are evaluated considering the historical evolution and types of wastewaters. The emphasis is on the potential for application in domestic sewage treatment, particularly in regions with a hot climate. Proper design and operation can result in a high capacity and efficiency of organic matter removal using single anaerobic reactors. Performance comparison of anaerobic treatment systems is presented based mostly on a single but practical parameter, the hydraulic retention time. Combined anaerobic reactor systems as well as combined anaerobic and non-anaerobic systems are also presented.  相似文献

During the treatment of raw domestic wastewater in the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, the suspended solids (SS) present in the wastewater tend to influence negatively the methanogenic activity and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) conversion efficiency. These problems led to the emergence of various anaerobic sludge bed systems such as the expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB), the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB)-septic tank, the hydrolysis upflow sludge bed (HUSB), the two-stage reactor and the anaerobic hybrid (AH) reactor. However, these systems have, like the UASB reactor, limited performance with regard to complete treatment (e.g., removal of pathogens). In this respect, a new integrated approach for the anaerobic treatment of domestic wastewater is suggested. This approach combines a UASB reactor and a conventional completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR) for the treatment of the wastewater low in SS and sedimented primary sludge, respectively. The principal advantages of the proposed system are energy recovery from organic waste in an environmentally friendly way; lowering the negative effect of suspended solids in the UASB reactor; production of a high quality effluent for irrigation; and prevention of odour problems.  相似文献

A new sewage treatment system was studied, which consisted of an anaerobic baffled filter reactor and the following aerobic post-treatment. One of the two studied systems (AN-I) was inoculated with psychrophilic digested sludge, the second one (AN-II) was operated without inoculation. The HRT in anaerobic and aerobic parts of the reactors were about 15 and 4 h, respectively. The temperature in both reactors varied during the year from 4.5 to 23 degrees C. All monitored parameters were removed with relatively high efficiencies (COD = 78.6-83.0%, BOD5 = 92.5-94.0% and SS = 80.9-92.7%). An intensive nitrification process was observed during the whole year in both reactors (under average temperature of 5.9 degrees C in January 2000, also). The average removal of the NH4-N varied during the year from 46.4% to 87.3%. In both systems a partial denitrification process was observed, too.  相似文献

Post-Treatment Options for the Anaerobic Treatment of Domestic Wastewater   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper focuses on the post-treatment options for the anaerobic treatment of domestic wastewater. Initially, the main limitations of anaerobic systems regarding carbon, nutrients and pathogen removal are presented. In sequence, the advantages of combined anaerobic/aerobic treatment and the main post-treatment options currently in use are discussed, including the presentation of flowsheets and a comparison between various post-treatment systems. Lastly, the paper presents a review of emerging options and possible improvements of current post-treatment alternatives.  相似文献

The present work investigates 1-anthraquinone sulphonate (1-AS) biodegradation under (i) aerobic conditions using domestic activated sludge as inoculum, (ii) anaerobic conditions using sludge from an anaerobic domestic wastewater treatment digestor in a sulphate-containing or methanogenic environment, (iii) a combination of anaerobic followed by aerobic conditions. The process was evaluated in terms of primary degradation, i.e. 1-AS elimination and ultimate degradation, as total dissolved organic carbon removal. It was shown that aerobic conditions lead to the complete primary and ultimate degradation, of 1-AS. By contrast, neither under sulphato-reductive nor methanogenic conditions does anaerobic digestion lead to the significant degradation of 1-AS. The use of anaerobic treatment followed by aerobic treatment did not improve degradation. Indeed aerobic post-treatment resulted in the re-appearance of pollutant in the medium even though this had been partly degraded under anaerobic conditions. Longterm performance and stability of two upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors inoculated with granular sludge and treating a synthetic waste water containing pentachlorophenol (PCP) and phenol were studied. A similar system consisting of two fixed-film reactors inoculated with anaerobic digested sewage sludge were further studied. One reactor in each series received glucose in addition to the phenols. Dechlorination of PCP proceeded via two different dominating pathways in the respective reactor systems, suggesting that two distinct microbial populations were present, probably originating from the different inocula. Dechlorinating activity was maintained for more than 18 months in the UASB reactors and was generally higher than in the fixed-film reactors. In the fixed-film reactors, dechlorination of PCP suddenly decreased after 15.5 months of operation compared to earlier performance. Since no operational parameters had been changed, this indicated that the enriched culture was unstable on a longterm basis. Addition of yeast extract to the medium restored activity. General process stability in both reactor systems was clearly enhanced by the addition of glucose and was superior in the UASB/granular sludge system. The better performance and the higher stability in the UASB/granular sludge reactor highlights the importance of thorough screening of inocular prior to start-up of processes treating waste waters containing xenobiotic compounds.Abbreviations PCP pentachlorophenol - TeCP tetrachlorophenol - TCP trichlorophenol - DCP dichlorophenol - UASB upflow anaerobic sludge blanket - HRT hydraulic retention time  相似文献

Background

Olive mill wastewater (OMW) is the aqueous effluent of olive oil producing processes. Given its high COD and content of phenols, it has to be decontaminated before being discharged. Anaerobic digestion is one of the most promising treatment process for such an effluent, as it combines high decontamination efficiency with methane production. The large scale anaerobic digestion of OMWs is normally conducted in dispersed-growth reactors, where however are generally achieved unsatisfactory COD removal and methane production yields. The possibility of intensifying the performance of the process using a packed bed biofilm reactor, as anaerobic treatment alternative, was demonstrated. Even in this case, however, a post-treatment step is required to further reduce the COD. In this work, a biological post-treatment, consisting of an aerobic biological "Manville" silica bead-packed bed aerobic reactor, was developed, tested for its ability to complete COD removal from the anaerobic digestion effluents, and characterized biologically through molecular tools.  相似文献

Compared to low concentrations of anionic surfactants (AS) in activated sludge process effluents (ASP) (<0.2 mg/L), upflow anaerobic sludge blanket-polishing pond (UASB-PP) effluents were found to contain very high concentrations of AS (>3.5 mg/L). AS (or linear alkylbenzen sulfonate, LAS) removals >99% have been found for ASP while in case of UASB-PP it was found to be < or = 30%. AS concentrations averaged 7347 and 1452 mg/kg dry wt. in wet UASB and dried sludges, respectively. Treated sewage from UASB based sewage treatment plants (STPs) when discharged to aquatic ecosystems are likely to generate substantial risk. Post-treatment using 1-1.6d detention, anaerobic, non-algal polishing ponds was found ineffective. Need of utilizing an aerobic method of post-treatment of UASB effluent in place of an anaerobic one has been emphasized. Natural drying of UASB sludges on sludge drying beds (SDBs) under aerobic conditions results in reduction of adsorbed AS by around 80%. Application of UASB sludges on SDBs was found simple, economical and effective. While disposal of treated UASB effluent may cause risk to aquatic ecosystems, use of dried UASB sludges is not likely to cause risk to terrestrial ecosystems.  相似文献

The applicability of Contois' kinetic equation to aerobic and anaerobic treatments of organic wastes is investigated. A refractory coefficient to account for the nonbiodegradable portion of the organic substrates in the digester is incorporated into the kinetic equation. The kinetic equation is applied to the data for aerobic digestions of organic substrates and for anaerobic treatment of dairy wastes. They all show a very good fit of the kinetic equation to the data. Furthermore, the kinetic parameters and the refractory coefficients are shown to be independent of influent organic substrate concentration. This study confirms previous reports that the effluent quality of biological treatment systems for organic wastes depends on influent organic waste concentration. The effect of temperature on the kinetic parameters and the refractory coefficient for anaerobic treatment of sewage sludge are studied. It shows that the kinetic parameters vary with temperature, while the refractory coefficient remains fairly constant. Equations to predict biodegradable treatment efficiency and volumetric substrate utilization rate are also briefly discussed.  相似文献

Thermophilic anaerobic treatment of sulphur-rich paper mill wastewater (0.8-3.1 gCOD/l, 340–850 mgSO4/l; COD:SO4 3.4-5.3) was studied in three laboratory-scale, upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors and in bioassays. The reactors were inoculated with non-adapted thermophilic granular sludge. In the bioassays, no inhibition of the inoculum was detected and about 62% COD removal (sulphide stripped) was obtained. About 70 to 80% of the removed COD was methanised. In the reactors, up to 60–74% COD removal (effluent sulphide stripped) was obtained at loading rates up to 10–30 kgCOD/m3d and hydraulic retention times down to 6 to 2 hours. The effluent total sulphide was up to 150–250 mg/l. Sulphide inhibition could not be confirmed from the reactor performances. The results from bioassays suggested that both the inoculum and sludge from the UASB reactor used acetate mainly for methane production, while sulphide was produced from hydrogen or its precursors.  相似文献

Wastewater from a food-manufacturing plant with a low concentration of organic matter below 100 mg/l TOC was first treated at 37°C in an anaerobic fluidized-bed reactor (AFBR) or in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB). The TOC removal efficiency in both reactors decreased from 85% to 65% as the influent TOC concentration decreased from 100 to 35 mg/l at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6 h. Treatment at an HRT of 4 h resulted in an effluent TOC concentration of 11 to 15 mg/l. The concentration of suspended solids in the effluent could be reduced to 20 mg/l, which corresponded to 7% of that of the influent. The effluent from both reactors was then treated anaerobically in a fixed-bed reactor system. The TOC concentration and optical density (OD) of the effluent from the aerobic treatment were reduced to 5 mg/l and 0.005, respectively, at an HRT of 2 h. When anaerobically or aerobically treated effluent was passed over an activated carbon column, the effluent TOC concentration was reduced to 2 to 3 mg/l. The conductivity of 1.3 mS/cm in raw wastewater, which was not removed through the above treatments, was reduced to 0.001 mS/cm on an ion-exchange resin column. An effluent quality corresponding to that of ultra-pure water for industrial use was finally attained by the treatment in this multi-step system.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion and wastewater treatment systems   总被引:19,自引:0,他引:19
Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed (UASB) wastewater (pre-)treatment systems represent a proven sustainable technology for a wide range of very different industrial effluents, including those containing toxic/inhibitory compounds. The process is also feasible for treatment of domestic wastewater with temperatures as low as 14–16° C and likely even lower. Compared to conventional aerobic treatment systems the anaerobic treatment process merely offers advantages. This especially is true for the rate of start-up. The available insight in anaerobic sludge immobilization (i.e. granulation) and growth of granular anaerobic sludge in many respects suffices for practice. In anaerobic treatment the immobilization of balanced microbial communities is essential, because the concentration of intermediates then can be kept sufficiently low.So far ignored factors like the death and decay rate of organisms are of eminent importance for the quality of immobilized anaerobic sludge. Taking these factors into account, it can be shown that there does not exist any need for phase separation when treating non- or slightly acidified wastewaters. Phase separation even is detrimental in case the acidogenic organisms are not removed from the effluent of the acidogenic reactor, because they deteriorate the settleability of granular sludge and also negatively affect the formation and growth of granular sludge. The growing insight in the role of factors like nutrients and trace elements, the effect of metabolic intermediates and end products opens excellent prospects for process control, e.g. for the anaerobic treatment of wastewaters containing mainly methanol.Anaerobic wastewater treatment can also profitably be applied in the thermophilic and psychrophilic temperature range. Moreover, thermophilic anaerobic sludge can be used under mesophilic conditions. The Expanded Granular Sludge Bed (EGSB) system particularly offers big practical potentials, e.g. for very low strength wastewaters (COD 1 g/l) and at temperatures as low as 10° C. In EGSB-systems virtually all the retained sludge is employed, while compared to UASB-systems also a substantially bigger fraction of the immobilized organisms (inside the granules) participates in the process, because an extraordinary high substrate affinity prevails in these systems. It looks necessary to reconsider theories for mass transfer in immobilized anaerobic biomass.Instead of phasing the digestion process, staging of the anaerobic reactors should be applied. In this way mixing up of the sludge can be significantly reduced and a plug flow is promoted. A staged process will provide a higher treatment efficiency and a higher process stability. This especially applies for thermophilic systems.  相似文献

AIMS: To test the potential use of Phanerochaete chrysosporium and other white-rot fungi to detoxify olive mill wastewaters (OMW) in the presence of a complex activated sludge. To combine the aerobic with anaerobic treatment to optimize the conversion of OMW in biogas. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 25-l air lift reactor was used to pretreat OMW by white-rot fungi. Detoxification of the OMW was monitored by size exclusion HPLC analysis, chemical oxygen demand (COD)/biological oxygen demand (BOD(5)) ratio evolution, and bioluminescence toxicity test. Anaerobic treatment of OMW was performed in a 12-l anaerobic filter reactor. Efficiency of the treatment was evaluated by organic matter removal, and biogas production. By comparison with the pretreatment by activated sludge only, the bioaugmentation with Phanerochaete chrysosporium or Trametes versicolor led to high removal of organic matter, decreased the COD/BOD(5) ratio and the toxicity. The subsequent anaerobic digestion of the OMW pretreated with activated sludge-white-rot fungi showed higher biomethanization yields than that pretreated with activated sludge only. Higher loading rates (7 g COD l(-1) day(-1)) were reached without any acidification or inhibition of biomethanization. CONCLUSIONS: The use of white-rot fungi, even in the presence of complex biological consortia to detoxify OMW, proved to be possible and made the anaerobic digestion of OMW for methane production feasible. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The use of fungi for OMW reuse and energy production could be adapted to industrial applications.  相似文献

The granulation process using synthetic wastewater containing pentachlorophenol (PCP) in four 1.1 l laboratory scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors was studied, and the anaerobic biotransformation of PCP during the granulation process investigated. After 110 days granular sludge was developed and up to 160 and 180 mg/l of PCP was added into the reactors R1 and R2, respectively, when they were inoculated with acclimated anaerobic sludge from an anaerobic digester of a citric acid plant. The inoculum was predominately composed of bacilli and filamentous bacteria. Granulation did not occur in reactors R3 and R4 which were inoculated with acclimated anaerobic sludge from aerobic sludge of the municipal sewage treatment plant which consisted mainly of cocci. Despite similar bacilli in the granule, the filamentous bacteria from reactor R1 were thicker than those of reactor R2. The granular sludge had a maximum diameter of 2.5 and 2.2 mm, and SMA of 1.44 and 1.32 gCOD/gTVS per day for reactors R1 and R2, respectively. Over 98% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate and 99% of PCP removal rate were achieved when reactors R1 and R2 were operated at PCP and COD loading rates of 150 and 7.5 g/l per day, respectively. H2-producing acetogens were the dominant anaerobes in the granular sludge.  相似文献

In order to reduce the discharge of residual sludge from an anaerobic digester, pre-treatment methods including low-pressure wet-oxidation, Fenton oxidation, alkali treatment, ozone oxidation, mechanical destruction and enzymatic treatment were evaluated and compared. VSS removal efficiencies of greater than 50% were achieved in cases of low-pressure wet-oxidation, Fenton oxidation and alkali treatment. Residual sludge from an anaerobic digester was pre-treated and subjected to thermophilic anaerobic digestion. As a result, the process of low-pressure wet-oxidation followed by anaerobic digestion achieved the highest VSS removal efficiency of 83%. The total efficiency of VSS removal of sewage sludge consisting of primary and surplus sludge would be approximately 92%, assuming that the VSS removal efficiency of sewage sludge is 50% in the anaerobic digester of the sewage treatment plant.  相似文献

A process train consisting of the following sequence of unit processes, a berl-saddle-packed anaerobic filter, an expanded bed, granular activated carbon anaerobic filter, and an activated sludge nitrification system was evaluated for the treatment of a synthetically prepared coal gasification wastewater. The first-stage anaerobic filter resulted in very little removal of organic matter and no methane production. Excellent reduction in organic matter occurred in the granular activated carbon anaerobic filter. The removal mechanism was initially adsorptive and near the end of the study, removal of organic matter was primarily through conversion to methane gas. It is felt that the success of the activated carbon anaerobic filter was due to the ability of the activated carbon to sequester some components of the wastewater that were toxic to the mixed culture of anaerobic microorganisms. The activated sludge nitrification system resulted in complete ammonia oxidation and was very efficient in final effluent polishing.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion of wastewater should be a core technology employed in decentralised sanitation systems especially when their objective is also resource conservation and reuse. The most efficient system involves separate collection and anaerobic digestion of the most concentrated domestic wastewater streams: black or brown water and solid fraction of kitchen waste. Separate collection using minimal amount of transport water besides saving this resource allows to apply a targeted treatment. A relatively small volume of digested effluent can be directly reused for fertilisation or processed when a high quality product is required. Clean nutrient production requires advanced multi-step treatment but the quality of products is risk-free. The issue of organic micro-pollutants and their accumulation in the environment is recently often addressed. Anaerobic treatment of total domestic wastewater stream can be applied as well. Treated in this way wastewater can be discharged or used for irrigation or fertilisation. The post-treatment will be usually required and its rate of complexity depends on the anaerobic effluent quality and local requirements for final effluent quality. A variety of technological solutions for treatment of domestic wastewater streams and reuse of resources is discussed in this paper.  相似文献

The thermophilic anaerobic digestion (TAD) of sewage sludge has often been found to be less stable than mesophilic treatment. In comparison to mesophilic digesters, thermophilic reactors treating sludge are generally characterized by relatively high concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFA) in the effluent along with poor effluent quality, indicating a lower level of process stability. However, reviewing the literature related to the procedure for obtaining a thermophilic inoculum, it seems that most of the problems associated with the instability and the accumulation of organic intermediates are the result of the manner in which the thermophilic sludge has been obtained. In this paper, the different options available for obtaining an anaerobic digester operating at thermophilic temperature (55°C) have been reviewed. In this light, rapid heating to the target temperature followed by the development of thermophilic microorganisms, which can be determined by VFA dropping to ≤500?mg acetic acid L?1 before increasing the organic loading rate (OLR), has been determined the most suitable means of establishing TAD.  相似文献

Sewage sludge samples representing different stages during waste water and sewage sludge treatment were collected at four Austrian municipal waste water treatment plants. Changes of sludge composition are reflected by a specific infrared spectroscopic pattern. Anaerobically digested sludge was subjected to aeration in lab-scale reactors in order to find out if post-aeration after anaerobic digestion provides enhanced organic matter degradation and stabilization. Spectral data were evaluated by means of multivariate statistics. Similar spectral characteristics of sludge degradation stages were visualized by principal component analysis. The effect of additional aerobic treatment of anaerobically stabilized sludge was revealed by discriminant analysis that distinguishes additionally aerated sludge from all the other degradation stages of sludge because of changes in the spectral pattern by increasing stabilization. Based on partial least squares regression (PLSR) a correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.91 was found between spectral characteristics and the chemical oxygen demand (COD).  相似文献

Leachate treatment is a challenging issue due to its high pollutant loads. There are several studies on feasible treatment methods of leachate. In the scope of this study, high organic content of young leachate was eliminated using an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) and a membrane bioreactor (MBR) in sequence and effluent of the system was given to single reactor for high activity ammonia removal over nitrite (SHARON) and anaerobic ammonia oxidation (Anammox) reactors to remove nitrogen content. All reactors were set up at lab scale in order to evaluate the usage of these processes in sequencing order for leachate treatment. COD and TKN removal efficiencies were over 90 % in the combined processes which were operated during the study. The biodegradable portion of organic matter was removed with an efficiency of 99 %. BOD5 concentration decreased to 50 mg/L by UASB and MBR in sequence even the influent BOD5 concentration was over 8,000 mg/L. Although high nitrogen concentrations were observed in raw leachate, successful removal of nitrogen was accomplished by consecutive operations of SHARON and Anammox reactors. The results of this study demonstrated that with an efficient pretreatment of leachate, the combination of SHARON–Anammox processes is an effective method for the treatment of high nitrogen content in leachate.  相似文献
