A high-rate oxidation pond is studied as a model system forcomparing 14C and oxygen evolution methods as tools for measuringprimary productivity in hypertrophic aquatic systems. Our resultsindicate that at very dense algal populations (up to 5 mg chl.a l1) and high photosynthetic rates, 14C based resultsmay severely underestimate primary productivity, unless a wayis found to keep incubation times very short. Results obtainedwith our oxygen electrode were almost an order of magnitudehigher than those obtained by all 14C procedures. These highervalues correspond fairly well with a field-tested computer-simulationmodel, as well as with direct harvest data obtained at the samepond when operated under similar conditions. Summary An integrated system for the collection, treatment and utilisation of piggery wastewater has been developed in Singapore which uses the cultivation of microalgae in high rate ponds to achieve reduction of BOD5 and COD5 of the effluent as well as producing single cell protein. A wide range of algal flora occurs in the ponds;Oocystis, Micratinium, Scenedesmus, Ankistrodesmus, Chlorella andOscillatoria spp were identified. Total algal counts, recorded from 1979 to 1981, ranged up to 107 per ml of pond water. There were considerable variations in the algal population and in the predominating species. No discernible pattern was evident. Consequently pond operations were frequently disturbed by these fluctuations in population which in turn was attributed to the heterogeneous composition of the piggery waste, to variable weather conditions and to predation by larger organisms particularlyMoina. After passing through the ponds, the total suspended solids were removed by a novel dissolved air flotation method which gave a clear effluent showing an 87% reduction in BOD5 value.
Resumen En Singapur se ha desrrollado un sistema integrado para le recogida, tratamiento y utilización de aguas residuales de pocilgas. Este sistema usa el cultivo de microalgas en estanques, de caudal rápido afin de reducir las DBO5 y DCO5 del efluencte produciendo asimismo proteínas celulares. La flora de algas producida en estos estanques es amplia y variada, habiendose identificado:Oocystis, Micratinium, Scenesdemus, Ankistrodesmus, Chlorella y Oscillatoria. Los recuentos totales de algas tomados desde 1979 a 1981 llegaron a alcanzar 10;7 por ml de agua del estanque. Se observaron variaciones considerables tanto en la población total de algas como en las especies predominantes sin que se pudiese, determinar un patrón de variación característico. Estas fluctuaciones en la población, causantes de frecuentes alteraciones en el funcionamiento del estanque, se atribuyeron a la composición heterogenea de los resuduos, a las variaciones climáticas y la predación por otros organismos particularmenteMoina Después de su paso por los estanque los solidos suspendidos totales se eliminaron mediante un nuevo método de flotación con aire disuelto, obteniendose un efluente limpio con una reducción de la DBO5 del 87%.
Résumé Un système intégré pour la collecte, le traitement et l'utilisation d'eaux résiduaires de porcherie a été développé à Singapoure. Il utilise la culture de micro-algues tant pour la réduction accélérée en lagune de la DBO5 et de la DCO de l'effluent que pour la production de protéines uni-cellulaires. On trouve une large gamme de flore algale dans les lagunes; des espèces d'-Oocystis, deMicratinium, deScenedesmus, Ankistrodesmus, deChlorella etd'Oscillatoria out été identifiées. Les comptages totaux d'algues, enregistrées de 1979 à 1981, ont donné jusqu' à 107 cellules par ml d'eau de la lagune. On a observé des variations considérables de population algale tant quantitatives que qualitatives. On ne discernait pas de spectres évidents. En conséquence, les opérations lagunaires ont été fréquemment perturbées par ces fermentations en population, qui, à leur tour, ont été attribuées à la composition hétérogène de l'effluent de porcherie, aux conditions atmosphériques et climatiques variables et à la prédation par des organismes plus conséquents, plus particulièrement desMoina. A new species of the family Ancorabolidae Sars, 1909 (Copepoda, Harpacticoida), Arthropsyllus australis sp. n. was collected 1994 during 'Magellan Campaign' of RV 'Victor Hensen' and is described in the present paper. Its inclusion in the genus Arthropsyllus Sars, 1909 is justified by the diagnostic characters of the genus: lack of any dorsal or dorsolateral well-developed processes, body slightly depressed dorsoventrally, body somites with lateral epimeres except cephalothorax and last two abdominal somites. A. australis sp. n. differs from Arthropsyllus serratus Sars, 1909 in the shape of the rostrum, in having moderately-sized sensilla-bearing dorsal and dorsolateral projections on cephalothorax and body somites, and in several differences on mandible, maxillule, maxilla and swimming legs. Seasonal changes in water temperatures, embracing periods of low, rising, high and declining temperatures, were recorded in both a temperate and a tropical pond. In the course of a year, the range between the lowest and highest average weekly temperatures was greater in the temperate pond. The spans between the average minimum and the average maximum weekly water temperatures in the warmest months of the year in the tropical pond were greater than those found at any time of the year in the temperate pond. The average weekly air and water temperatures showed the same pattern of seasonal fluctuations; in the tropical pond the average weekly air temperatures were always less than the average minimum weekly water temperatures, whereas they were below, within or above the spans between the average minimum and average maximum weekly aquatic temperatures, according to the time of year, in the temperate pond.In both ponds, diurnal fluctuations were absent during the cooler months; the amplitudes of the fluctuations in the warmer months varied according to the time of year, and were greater, during the warmest months, in the tropical pond. In both ponds lowest temperatures were recorded sometime between 0200 and 1000 hours and highest between 1200 and 2000 hours.The influence of temperature on the life-cycles of invertebrates in both ponds is discussed briefly.
Zusammenfassung Jahreszeitlich bedingte Schwankungen in der Wassertemperatur, welche Perioden mit niedriger, ansteigender, hoher und abfallender Temperatur einschlossen, wurden in einem gemäßigten und in einem tropischen Teich festgestellt. Im Laufe eines Jahres war der Unterschied zwischen den tiefsten und höchsten wöchentlichen Durchschnittstemperaturen im gemäßigten Teich größer. Hingegen war der Abstand zwischen Mindest- and Höchsttemperatur des Wassers im Wochendurchschnitt während der warmsten Monate des Jahres im tropischen Teich größer als zu irgendeiner Jahreszeit im gemäßigten Teich. Der Wochendurchschnitt der Luft- und Wassertemperaturen wies das gleiche jahreszeitlich bedingte Schwankungsmuster auf. In dem tropischen Teich war die wöchentliche Durchschnittstemperatur der Luft stets niedriger als die Mindestdurchschnittstemperatur des Wassers in einer Woche. Jedoch lag sie — je nach Jahreszeit — unterhalb, auf gleicher Höhe oder oberhalb der Spannweite der niedrigsten and der höchsten wöchentlichen Dutchschnittstemperaturen des Wassers im gemäßigten Teich.In beiden Teichen traten die taglichen Schwankungen während der kÜhleren Monate nicht auf. Der Umfang der Schwankungen in den wärmeren Monaten variierte je nach Jahreszeit and war in den wärmsten Monaten in dem tropischen Teich größer. The seasonal variation of phytoplankton photosynthesis was measured with 14C-method in a warmed ice-free pond in central Finland. Simultaneously with in situ measurements the photosynthesis was also measured in an incubator with different water temperatures and constant light (ca. 16 W m–2). The total annual photosynthesis was 57.2 C m–2 a–1. The portion of the winter and spring production of the annual photosynthesis was 18.4%, that of the autumn production ws 17.4%. Thus 64.3% of the total annual phytoplankton photosynthesis occurred in the three summer months. The range of the daily integrated photosynthesis per unit area was 1.9—563 mg C m–2d–1. The photosynthetic rate per unit chlorophyll a varied in situ from 0.94 to 33.1 mg C (mg chl. a)–1 d–1. The highest value was measured in the beginning of July and the lowest in mid-January. The photosynthetic rate increased in situ exponentially with increasing water temperature. In the incubator the highest photosynthetic rate values were also found in July and August (at+20 °C) when the phytoplankton population was increasing and the minimum values occurred after every diatom maximum both in spring and autumn. Light was a limiting factor for photosynthesis from September to Mid-January, low water temperature was a limiting factor from late January through May. The efficiency of the photosynthesis varied between 0.1 and 0.7% of P.A.R. According to the incubator experiments the Q10 values for the photosynthesis were 2.45 and 2.44 for the winter population between 1 and 10° C and for the summer population between 5 and 15° C, respectively, but the Q10 values decrease at the higher temperatures. The main effect of the warm effluents on the yearly photosynthesis was the increase of production in spring months due to the lack of ice cover. However, the increase of total annual phytoplankton photosynthesis was only ca. 10–15%, because the water temperature was during the spring months below 10° C. 相似文献

AbstractElectrometric studies were carried out on the interaction of heavy metal ions such as manganese, chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium and lead with the extracted organic matter, humic and fulvic acid from the sludge in a sewage oxidation pond. The distribution of heavy metals was between 60 and 97%, which is associated with the solid waste (sludge) of the oxidation pond. The adsorption/removal efficiency of metal ions onto the sludge ash was more than 90% and 97%, respectively, in the pure system. To obtain the ash, the sludge was burnt at 500°C, treated with nitric acid (1+1) to leach out all the metals and then filtered; the residue left on the filter paper was the pure ash. Both this and that coated with organic matter were studied. The adsorption isotherm for metals, humic/fulvic acids and metal-humic/fulvic acid complexes in the metal-free sludge ash and in the organic matter in the pure system were studied using the Freundlich relationship. Good agreement was found suggesting that sediment and humic/fulvic acids have an important role in the mobility, dispersion and sedimentation of metal ions in an aquatic environment. More of these heavy metals are removed in the pure system than in the natural system. This may be due to the lesser availability of humic and fulvic acids in the lagoons during the short detention time of sewage in suspension in the oxidation pond, whereas the sludge which has settled to the bottom of the pond for several years contains rich decomposed organic matter in the form of humic and fulvic acids containing heavy metals. To understand the characteristics of the ecosystem in Japanese lowland marsh, we investigated chlorophyll-a (Chl. a), photosynthesis and respiration of a phytoplankton community in a brownish-colored pond in Naka-ikemi marsh, Tsuruga, Fukui
Prefecture. Chl. a concentrations and volumetric gross primary production rates ranged between 1.3–57.0 μg Chl. a l−1 and 148–1619 μg C l−1 day−1 during the study period. Higher values of Chl. a and primary production rates were clearly observed from June to September, when the dominant algae were the phytoflagellates,
Peridinium (Dinophyceae) and Cryptomonas (Cryptophyceae), with swimming ability. The trophic status of the pond water of Naka-ikemi marsh was defined as being in
eutrophic condition based on the biomass and productivity of phytoplankton. However, depths of Z
1% showing the productive layer in this study site were relatively narrower than those observed in the hyper-eutrophic Lake
Suwa with frequent cyanobacterial water bloom. Factor-attenuating underwater light intensity in Naka-ikemi marsh was presumed
to be colored dissolved organic matter. Thus, not only phytoplankton primary production, but also allochthonous organic matter
supplied from the catchment area seems to be the dominant factor in the whole energy budget of the pond. In conclusion, we

1. This study focused on phytoplankton production in Lake Tanganyika. We provide new estimates of daily and annual primary production, as well as growth rates of phytoplankton, and we compare them with values published in former studies.
2. Chlorophyll- a (chl- a ) in the mixed layer ranged from 5 to 120 mg chl- a m−2 and varied significantly between rainy and dry seasons. Particulate organic carbon concentrations were significantly higher in the south basin (with 196 and 166 mg C m−3 in the dry and the rainy season, respectively) than in the north basin (112 and 109 mg C m−3 , respectively).
3. Carbon : phosphorus (C : P) ratios varied according to season. Phosphorus limitation seemed to occur more frequently than nitrogen limitation, especially during the rainy season. Severe P deficiencies were rare.
4. Measured particulate daily primary production ranged from 110 to 1410 mg C m−2 day−1 ; seasonal contrasts were well marked in the north basin, but less in the south basin, where primary production peaks occurred also in the rainy season. Estimates of annual primary production, based on daily primary production calculated from chl- a and water transparency, gave values lower than those reported in previous studies. Picophytoplankton accounted on average for 56% of total particulate production in the south basin during the wet season of 2003.

The egg positive rate of Enterobius vermicularis was investigated among students of a primary school and a kindergarten located in the rural area of Tangjin-gun, Chungchongnam-do in December, 1998. Of the 189 examinees, 28 (14.8%) were found to be infected with E. vermicularis by the adhesive cellotape anal swab method. The infection rates ranged from 4.2% to 26.1% among school children, and the highest rate was observed in children attending kindergarten. Three months after treatment with albendazole, four (14.3%) out of 28 infected children still remained infected with E. vermicularis. Through this survey, we were able to determine that E. vermicularis infection is still prevalent among children in rural areas of Korea. 相似文献

The effects of five (5 000, 10 000, 15 000, 20 000, 24 000 kg ha?1 year?1) different doses of organic fertilizer (cow dung) were studied on pond productivity in terms of plankton production and fish biomass in freshwater fish ponds. The grow out period was 60 days. Physico-chemical factors of pond waters were also monitored. With an increase in the fertilizer dose, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) (1.7 ± 0.1 – 10.35 ± 0.05 mg L?1), O-PO4 (0.04 ± 0.0 – 0.77 ± 0.02 mg L?1) and NH4-N (0.03 ± 0.02 – 0.32 ± 0.02 mg L?1) increased significantly (P < 0.05). Alkalinity (79.0 ± 1.6 – 164.0 ± 3.8 mg L?1) also increased with the increase in fertilizer dose, declining after 60 and 75 days (48.8 ± 1.13 – 67.9 ± 2.1 mg L?1). NO3-N was maximum (1.66 ± 0.2 mg L?1) in the ponds which received cow dung at 15 000 kg ha?1 year?1, and declined (0.94 ± 0.5 mg L?1) at higher doses. Dissolved oxygen (DO) remained significantly high (4.7 mg L?1) up to the third (15 000 kg ha?1 year?1) treatment. Highest plankton population (phytoplankton 17 350.0 ± 1 250.0 no L?1), zooplankton (373.0 ± 22.0 no L?1), species diversity (phytoplankton 3.0, zooplankton 2.3), fish biomass (4.45 kg) and specific growth rate (SGR) (2.36 % body weight (BW) d?1) were also observed in ponds which were treated with fertilizer at 15 000 kg ha?1 year?1. However, at higher doses, a decline in these parameters (phytoplankton, 0.0 – 8 810.0 ± 690.0 no L?1; zooplankton, 0.0 – 205.0 ± 25.0 no L?1; fish biomass, 2.3 kg; SGR, 1.25 % body weight (BW) d?1) was observed. Furthermore, with a decrease in the water temperature from 24 °C (on day 60) to 21 °C (on day 75), a decline in nutrient release, plankton population L?1 and species diversity was observed. Sediment analysis indicated that with an increase in the fertilizer dosage, a significant and progressive increase in the accumulation of organic carbon (0.787 ± 0.006 – 0.935 ± 0.01), total nitrogen (0.877 ± 0.071 – 1.231 ± 0.03), NH4-N (54.4 ± 0.57 – 68.95 ± 0.81), NO3-N (78.5 ± 1.21 – 98.5 ± 0.35), total P (140.0 ± 0.50 – 151.0 ± 1.27) and soluble P (7.15 ± 0.18 – 10.1 ± 0.56) took place; similarly, electrical conductivity (EC) values of sediment also increased progressively (from 200.0 ± 7.1–300.0 ± 10.63 μ mhos cm?1). 相似文献

The relationship between phytoplankton primary production and seasonality of physico-chemical parameters were examined for five man-made lakes in the dry-zone of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka experiences two monsoons dividing the year into four meteorological seasons: — the North East (October–December) and South West (April–June) monsoons and the two inter-monsoons. A significant log linear relationship was found between Secchi disc depth and the depth of the euphotic zone which was lowest during the NE monsoon. Maximum mean photosynthetic rate ranged from 0.935 ± 0.067 SE to 0.479 mg O2l–1 h–1 ± 0.115. Gross primary productivity which ranged from 0.378 g O2 m–2 h–1 in the NE monsoon to 0.980 g O2 m–2 h–1 in the SW monsoon showed significant season variation. The two parameters of the hyperbolic tangent equation, Pm and, were estimated from in situ vertical profiles of primary productionusing mesocosm data along a nutrient gradient. The parameters,derived from 4-h (around noon) 14C incubations, were used togetherwith the photosynthesis-light curve and hourly solar radiationdata to calculate daily primary production rates (Pd). Approximately40% of the daily production occurred in the 4 h around noon.Considering parameter uncertainty, there was no indication ofan increase in variation in production with increased nutrientloading, nor did biomass-specific P-I parameters increase. Annualproduction ranged from 82 to 901 g C m2 year1and was highest in the highest nutrient treatment tank. Dailyproductivity ranged from 0.02 to 9.1 g C m2 day1and was significantly correlated, in all treatments, with acomposite parameter BI0/k (where B is phytoplankton biomass;I0 is daily radiation and k is the extinction coefficient).Linear regressions of Pd against BI0/k indicated that much ofthe variability (86%) in productivity was explained by lightavailability and phytoplankton biomass. Two approaches for predictingproductivity were compared: (i) predicting production directlyfrom environmental variables (i.e. BI0/k) and (ii) predictingthe parameters of the P-I curve from environmental variablesand using these to calculate daily production. 相似文献

Above-and below-ground biomass of Typha angustifolia L. was sampled monthly for 18 months from a small Texas pond. Maximum above-ground biomass was 2559±284 g AFDW (ash-free dry weight) m−2 in 1983 and 2895±217 g AFDW m−2 in 1984. Peak below-ground biomass for these 2 years was 2506±278 g AFDW m−2 and 2314±226 g AFDW mt-2, respectively. Stepwise multiple linear regression analyses revealed that mean above-ground biomass accrual was related to duration of growing season, cumulative precipitation, cumulative degree days and/or cumulative pan evaporation. The same was not true for below-ground biomass increases. Analysis of covariance revealed that the rates of above-ground biomass production were not significantly different (F test, p < 0.05) between the 1983 and 1984 growing seasons. Below-ground biomass turnover times for 1983 and 1984 were 2.47 and 1.21 years, respectively. 相似文献

Specific rates of growth (Cw) of Mesocyclops leuckarti, young male and female instars varied between 0.03–0.26 and 0.03–0.17 g(w.w.)/g(w.w.)/day respectively at 15° and 22°C, whilst at IV–V copepodid stages females showed a higher Cw values. During 1969–1975 the averages of productivity and monthly P/B ratios were 44 (±23) g(w.w.) (= 5g(w.w.)/m2/month) and 3.1 respectively. P/B ratios were highly correlated (r(sup2)=0.98) with temperature changes. Metabolic parameters and P/B ratios were found to be similar to other water bodies in the world indicating an adaptation of M. leuckarti to different conditions. 相似文献
