Patterns of morphological variation were studied in herbarium specimens of Stellaria longipes, an herbaceous perennial and subsequently in a growth chamber experiment using three cytotypes (4x, 6x, 8x) of S. longipes and diploids of its proposed progenitor S. longifolia. Despite extensive phenotypic plasticity in many traits, patterns of variation resulting from ecotypic differentiation within S. longipes could be detected in the field. A distinct form of S. longipes, which is restricted primarily to arctic and alpine tundra locations, shows genetic differentiation for the following traits: few flowers per ramet, a low proportion of flowering ramets, and ovate leaves. The three cytotypes of S. longipes could be distinguished by their mean genotypic value for leaf length and number of flowers per ramet. The extent of phenotypic plasticity in these traits makes it unlikely that the cytotypes could be distinguished in the field. The direction and extent of morphological divergence between S. longifolia and S. longipes suggest an alloploid origin for S. longipes. Variational trends (among-habitat types and cytotypes) in trait means are similar to those reported previously for the pattern of plasticity. This supports the argument that similar forces guide evolution of the mean and pattern of plasticity of a trait.  相似文献

The springtail Gomphiocephalus hodgsoni (Arthropoda: Collembola) has been the focus of extensive ecophysiological and molecular genetic work and is now arguably the most well-studied of the continental Antarctic springtails. Here, we further the ecophysiological catalogue of this species. First, we provide experimental data on G. hodgsoni from one summer season at Cape Bird (Ross Sea Region) examining dispersal ability and desiccation tolerance. Next, we expand an existing metabolic rate dataset that encompasses individual metabolic rate measurements across both temporal and spatial scales in southern Victoria Land, adding an additional season of metabolic rate measurements taken at a cooler, drier continental location (Garwood Valley). Our data show that some G. hodgsoni individuals can survive at least ten days of suspension on the surface of both fresh and sea water. This, coupled with the presence of G. hodgsoni specimens in air and pitfall traps suggests that dispersal over local scales (i.e. metres) is possible for this species. Our metabolic data show that different populations within the same Antarctic region have different average metabolic rates at both temporal and spatial scales, indicating that distinct populations may respond differently to environmental variables. We suggest that G. hodgsoni maintains a flexible life history strategy that allows its ecophysiological response(s) to be dependent on local environmental conditions. Accordingly, there may be no ‘typical’ response to environmental changes—a factor that should be considered in both future ecophysiological work and conservation approaches.  相似文献

Disanthus cercidifolius Maxim. var. longipes H. T. Chang, a plant species that only occurs in a few counties in Hunan, Jiangxi and Zhejiang Provinces and with a relatively small number of individuals, is ranked as a second Class endangered species for conservation in China. We have studied the effect of pollen and resources available to female reproduction, and the reproductive mechanism of “excess flowers with low fruit set” in Disanthus cercidifolius Maxim. var. longipes H. T. Chang was discussed. Results are as follows Pollen from different sources has significant effects on fruit set and seed set of Disanthus cercidifolius Maxim. var. longipes H. T. Chang. The pollen source rather than pollen numbers significantly affected reproduction of this species. In wild populations, producing one fruit needs about 54.8 flowers, and one satiation seed needs about 6.60 flowers or 83.19 ovules. After fertilizing, which was propitious to flower development, the abortion rate of flower buds was decreasing, but the flowering rate was increasing. The fruit set and seed set was also significantly increasing, while abortion rate of fruit was significantly decreasing. With the increasing percentages of cutting leaves, the fruit set decreased, but the abortion rate of fruit shows no significant differentiation among treatments. After cutting branches that were puny, broken and insectin-fested branches, the flower number seemed to be decreasing, but the fruit set and seed set all increased significantly. After removing some flowers, the fruit set was calculated with respect to the number of flowers remaining after the treatment increased with increasing of percentages of flower removal, whereas fruit set calculated with respect to the initial number of flowers remained constant, and the mean weights of per fruit and per seed all decreased significantly. Sufficient spatial or temporal heterogeneities in nutrient levels might allow limitation of seed set by resources and pollen in a natural population, while supplying resources may indirectly affect pollination by increasing attraction of the flowers to pollinators. There were very low fruit and seed sets in natural populations of Disanthus cercidifolius Maxim. var. longipes H. T. Chang. Different factors may have interacted to effect a low fruit set. A joint adoption of the “selection abortion hypothesis”, “ovary reserve hypothesis” and “male function hypothesis” seems to be the most likely explanation for the reproductive strategy of “excess flowers with few fruit sets” in Disanthus cercidifolius Maxim. var. longipes H. Morphological relationships were investigated among diploidStellaria porsildii, polyploidS. longipes, and diploidS. longifolia. Canonical discriminant analysis, based on a priori assumptions to maximize differences among groups, showed thatS. longipes clusters equally distant between the two diploid species along an axis connecting the diploids' centroids, but it differs along an axis perpendicular to this axis. The intermediacy along the former axis is evidence thatS. longipes is an amphiploid derived fromS. longifolia andS. porsildii. The divergence along the latter axis may be attributable to adaptively valuable heterotic traits which were retained following amphidiploidization. The only morphological discontinuity occurred between the two diploids, whereas the morphological range ofS. longipes overlapped the range of both diploids forming a continuum. The lack of discrete clusters is likely due to hybridization and introgression withS. longifolia on one hand, and convergence of traits betweenS. longipes var.monantha andS. porsildii on the other. High a posteriori assignments in classificatory discriminant analysis supports the separation ofS. longipes var.monantha from otherS. longipes specimens. AlthoughS. longipes var.monantha grouped close toS. porsildii, the two groups separate based on leaf shape traits. Overall results support, firstly, the hypothesis thatS. porsildii is a diploid parent species which by hybridizing withS. longifolia gave rise to polyploidS. longipes. Secondly, results suggest thatS. longipes var.monantha converged morphologically towardsS. porsildii relatively recently due to ecological specialization, and merits distinction at least as a variety ofS. longipes.  相似文献

Summary Feeding experiments and prey collections in Panama have shown the tropical spitting spider Scytodes longipes to be a specialized feeder on soft-chitinized arthropods (Diptera, Lepidoptera, Hemiptera, Orthopteroidea, and Araneae); hard-chitinized insects (Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, and Heteroptera) are refused. There is a considerable specialisation on spiders as prey. The unique prey-catching behaviour in which a gummy secretion is spat onto prey items is considered as an important characteristic of this specialisation. Pholcus phalangioides, a pholcid with convergent morphology and a different specialised prey-catching behaviour, is discussed as an ecological equivalent to Scytodes longipes.  相似文献

Being able to utilize many different food resources is probably an important aspect of the success of decapod crustaceans which fill a wide range of various ecological niches worldwide. The phenomenon is facilitated by the complex mouth apparatus found in this group, whose representatives possess six pairs of mouthparts– mandibles, maxillae 1, and maxillae 2 and three maxillipeds, the first three pairs of thoracic appendages which are also specialized to food manipulation. These six pairs are able to perform a number of movements for transporting, aligning, crushing and cutting. Studies into the functional morphology of mouthparts have already been carried out in some decapod species. This study focuses on Lithodes maja, a species of the hitherto understudied king crabs (Lithodidae), chosen on the grounds of their remarkable evolutionary history as ‘derived hermit crabs’. Individuals were filmed while being presented with different kinds of food. To obtain structural information on the individual mouthpart elements as naturally arranged in relation to one another, the shape of the mouthparts was 3D‐reconstructed from micro‐CT scans. These data were complemented by scanning electron microscopy, to analyse the surface structures in detail. There is evidence that the various elements of the mouthparts of L. maja can be sorted into six functional groups: (i) transporting mouthpart elements, (ii) aligning/sorting mouthpart elements, (iii) clutching/holding mouthpart elements, (iv) tearing/cutting/crushing mouthpart elements, (v) current‐generating mouthpart elements and (vi) grooming mouthpart elements. According to our 3D reconstruction, there only seem to be minor differences in morphology and relative position between the mouthparts of L. maja and those of the closely related species, Pagurus bernhardus.  相似文献

The respective roles of the phylogenetic and ecological components in an adaptive radiation are tested on a sample of Old World rats and mice (Muridae, Murinae). Phylogeny was established on nuclear and mitochondrial genes and reconstructed by maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods. This phylogeny is congruent with previous larger scale ones recently published, but includes some new results: Bandicota and Nesokia are sister taxa and Micromys would be closely related to the Rattus group. The ecological diversification is investigated through one factor, the diet, and the mandible outline provides the morphological marker. Elliptic and radial Fourier transforms are used for quantifying size and shape differences among species. Univariate size and shape parameters indicate that phylogeny is more influential on size than diet, and the reverse occurs for shape and robust patterns are recognized by multivariate analyses of the data sets provided by the Fourier methods. Omnivorous and herbivorous groups are well separated despite some overlapping, as well as are other Murinae with a specialized diet (insects, seeds). Phylogeny is also influential as shown by the segregation of several groups (Praomys, Arvicanthini, Rattus, Apodemus). Allometric shape variation was investigated, and although present it does not overwhelm effects of either phylogeny or diet. Massive mandibles characterize herbivorous Murinae and slender mandibles, the insectivorous ones. A strong angular process relative to the coronoid process characterizes seedeaters, and the reverse characterized Murinae with a diet based largely on animal matter. Such changes in morphology are clearly in relation with the functioning of the mandible, and with the forces required by the nature of the food: the need of a stronger occlusal force in herbivorous species would explain massive mandibles, and an increase of the grasping and piercing function of incisors in insectivorous species would explain slender mandibles.  相似文献

Tetranychus evansi is an exotic pest of Solanaceous crops in Africa discovered in Zimbabwe in 1979. Two natural enemies, the predatory mite Phytoseiulus longipes and the fungal pathogen Neozygites floridana are important causes of mortality in T. evansi populations in Brazil. The first part of this study assessed the effects of N. floridana on predation and oviposition of P. longipes fed on N. floridana infected T. evansi and T. urticae. No N. floridana hyphal bodies were found in P. longipes after this feeding, demonstrating that N. floridana is not pathogenic to P. longipes and does not affect its oviposition. The second part of the study investigated the time spent on searching for and consuming of eggs on leaf discs with and without N. floridana capilliconidia. Both the searching and the feeding time on the first egg were similar on leaf discs with and without capilliconidia. When P. longipes was offered the choice of feeding on eggs on leaf discs with or without capilliconidia, the numbers of eggs consumed were not different. The only N. floridana effect observed on P. longipes was reduced egg predation. In addition, increased time spent grooming on leaf discs with capilliconidia was observed. P. longipes was efficient in removing most capilliconidia attached to the body through self-grooming behavior. This suggests that although the predator did not avoid areas with capilliconidia, it detected and removed most capilliconidia attached to the body. Increased grooming may account for the lower egg predation rates.  相似文献

The mandibles of the parthenogenetic females of the marine calyptomeran and gymnomeran Cladocera have been examined by means of the scanning electron microscope. These investigations reveal great differences beween Calyptomera and Gymnomera with respectively pulverizing and cutting mechanisms. The appendages of the Gymnomera are morphologically very similar and these species seem able to deal with a wide variety of food.

We compared the floral morphologies and pollinator fauna and morphologies of Hosta longipes var. longipes on the main Japanese island of Honshu and var. latifolia on the Izu Islands to examine the differentiation processes of H. longipes in the island system. The corolla length was shorter on the southern Izu Islands than on the main island and northern Izu Islands. However, the size of other flower parts of H. longipes did not simply decrease across main island Honshu and the Izu Islands, unlike other Izu endemic plant species studied previously. Instead, the floral morphology showed a complicated variation pattern. Pollinator fauna of H. longipes on the Izu Islands varied more widely than those on the main island. The diverse pollinator fauna may have influenced the morphological differentiation of H. longipes on these islands.  相似文献

Genetic variation within and the relationship betweenStellaria longipes Goldie andS. longifolia Muhl. were studied. Ten enzyme systems were assessed in eight natural populations ofS. longipes (25 loci) and three ofS. longifolia (20 loci) using starch and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Patterns of population differentiation corresponded to geographic distance. There was no evidence that polyploidS. longipes had greater electrophoretic variability than diploidS. longipes. The isozyme data confirmed extensive population differentiation in these species and, within that context, a relatively close relationship betweenS. longipes andS. longifolia. It was postulated that diploids of these two species might be the progenitors of tetraploidS. longipes.  相似文献

The effects of food texture and burrowing on mandible wear in the predatory carabid beetle Pterostichus melanarius Illiger were investigated by feeding adults soft or hard food in jars with or without soil. Both the incisor cusp (mandible tip) and cutting surface of the mandibles erode more in response to the combination of hard food and burrowing than to hard food alone. Females were found to erode their mandibles more than males in the hard-food-only treatment, whereas males wore down their mandibles more than females in the soil-only treatment. Female P. melanarius collected in a cereal field contained signficantly more solid food items compared with males. Differences in behaviour apparently resulted in differential wear patterns between the sexes. It is shown that the process of mandible wear in P. melanarius will result in worn mandibles in their first year as adults. However, mandible size of field-sampled females were found to be best correlated with females (of similar age) in the experiment exhibiting extensive wear (foraged hard food and burrowed in soil). The mandibles of field-sampled males were similar to those of males in the hard-food-only and the soil-only treatments, which showed only slight to moderate wear. The influence of mandible wear on fecundity and survival in P. melanarius as well as in other carabid species is discussed.

An electron microscopic examination of large amorphous inclusions located in a variety of photosynthetic thecate dinoflagellates (Alexandrium ostenfeldii (Paulsen) Balech et Tangen, Gonyaulax diegensis Kofoid, Scrippsiella sp., Ceratium longipes (Bailey) Gran, and Prorocentrum micans Ehrenberg) and a nonphotosynthetic thecate species (Amylax sp.) revealed each inclusion to be a food vacuole, the majority of which were ingested ciliate prey. Recognizable features of these ciliates included linear arrays of basal bodies and cilia consistent with oligotrich polykinetid structure, characteristic macronuclei, chloroplasts (evidently kleptoplastids), cup-shaped starch plates, and cylindrical extrusomes. Three species contained (apparent) nonciliate prey: Scrippsiella sp., whose food vacuoles consistently contained unusual and complex extrusome-like cylindrical bodies having a distinctive six-lobed, multilayered structure; P. micans, which contained an unidentified encysted cell; and a single A. ostenfeldii cell, containing a Dinophysis sp. dinoflagellate cell. Several food vacuoles of ciliate origin had a red hue. This, together with the resemblance of A. ostenfeldii cells to planozygotes, suggests that similar structures previously identified as accumulation bodies may in fact be food vacuoles and that feeding may in some cases be associated with sexual processes.  相似文献

The taxonomically important characteristics of Xerula melanotricha Dörfelt are constant in fruit bodies, also in such which have been formed in culture. Studies on the development of the fruit bodies in culture showed that the macrosetae are formed already in the primordium. At first they are hyaline and colourless. A dark fluid (guttation) is secreted by the macrosetae. This is a specific characteristic of Xerula melanotricha. The fluid has an influence on the colours of the fruit bodies. The American specimens of “Collybia longipes” are revised by Mitchel & Smith (1978). These autors consider all the American collections to be a special variety, “Oudemansiella longipes (St. Amans) Moser var. americana Mitchel et Smith”. Investigations of the holotypus and of other collections suggested that this variety is a well characterized, seperate species. This taxon is an endemit of the Southern Rocky Mountains. In this paper it is described as Xerula americana Dörfelt sp. nov.  相似文献

Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard (Acari: Tetranychidae) is an invasive tomato pest in several African, American, Asian and European countries, with potential to reduce yield by up to 90%. Populations of the predaceous phytoseiid mite Phytoseiulus longipes Evans (Acari: Phytoseiidae) has been reported to have high potential for controlling T. evansi. However, tomato genotypes can potentially affect the performance of T. evansi and the predation ability of P. longipes. We evaluated the performance and predation capacity of P. longipes feeding on T. evansi nymphs on the two cultivated genotypes widely grown in Western Africa and a breeding genotype. The two commercial evaluated genotypes were Tounvi (susceptible, with few trichomes), TLCV15 (susceptible, with many trichomes), and the breeding genotype was SPJ-05–2018 (partially resistant with many glandular trichomes) selected from interspecific crossing TLCV15 and PI 13447 (highly resistant wild tomato genotype). We hypothesized that the susceptible genotype (with fewer trichomes) would be more favorable for P. longipes when compared to the susceptible or partially resistant genotypes (with a higher numbers of non-glandular or glandular trichomes). Intrinsic rate of increase (r) and predation potential (ω) of P. longipes were significantly reduced on SPJ-05–2018, possibly due to a negative effect of its glandular trichomes. Although the intrinsic rate of increase was higher on both susceptible genotypes (TLCV15 and Tounvi), predation potential was higher on TLCV15. Our results refuted the hypothesis that T. evansi-susceptible genotype with fewer trichomes would be more favorable to P. longipes.

Pangolins are myrmecophagous mammals whose biology and ecology remain poorly studied. Termite mandibles and ant head capsules are the two primary remains found in pangolin feces. Determining the retention time of insect cuticles is important for understanding the digestive physiology of pangolins, while determining the recovery rate of termites and ants in feces is required to estimate the number of these prey items that are consumed by pangolins. In this study, the authors conducted feeding trials with captive Chinese pangolins (Manis pentadactyla). Sixty grams of the fungus-growing termite Odontotermes formosanus (18,816 individuals) and 15–20 g of the yellow crazy ant Anoplolepis gracilipes (14,400–19,200 individuals) were fed to each pangolin. After feeding, pangolin feces were collected daily for 1 week. The authors also assessed the accuracy of using chromium (III) oxide powder (Cr2O3) as a proxy for determining gut passage time, as has been done in previous studies. The results showed that remaining termite mandibles and ant head capsules in feces peaked at 66 and 90 hr after feeding and their recovery rates were 0.35 ± 0.10 and 0.65 ± 0.04, respectively. In both feeding trials, the retention time of Cr2O3 was much shorter than that of the termite mandibles and ant head capsules, indicating that Cr2O3 is not an appropriate indicator for estimating food retention time of myrmecophagous animals. Our results revealed that the ant head capsules were preserved better in feces compared with the termite mandibles, suggesting that termites may be considerably underestimated in the feces of wild pangolins.  相似文献

Analysis of the feeding apparatus of the stone crab, Menippe mercenaria (Brachyura, Xanthidae), has demonstrated that substantial internal and external morphological alterations occur at metamorphosis and suggests that the mastication of food shifts from the mandibles to the gastric mill at that time. These changes correspond to the changes in environment and diet that take place at metamorphosis, when the previously planktotrophic larvae begin benthic life. A detailed account of the structure and development of the mandibles is presented. The mandibles of all zoeal stages are similar: The incisor process has a series of teeth and denticles and the prominent molar process appears to be well adapted for grinding food. Megalopal mandibles are transitional but have the form that is typical of all subsequent stages: The expanded incisor process is rounded and toothless and the molar process is less prominent and has lost its grinding denticles. The cardiac stomach of the zoeal stages has no gastric mill; the medial and lateral teeth of the mill first appear in the megalopa. A very simple procedure is described for preparing larval mandibles for scanning electron microscopy using the molted exoskeletons from larval rearing experiments.  相似文献

Cryothecomonas longipes Schnepf and Kühn sp. nov. is a colourless biflagellate organism, 9–14 μm long and 7–9 μm wide when not filled with food vacuoles. It was detected in the North Sea, feeding with pseudopodia on diatoms. It penetrates the host shell, while the main body of the flagellate remains outside the frustule. Cells are covered with a multilayered theca. The pseudopodium protrudes through a preformed slit in the theca. Each flagellum also emerges through a pit in which the theca forms a funnel of complex structure that girdles each flagellum. The anterior flagellum is 9–15 μm long and oriented forward; the ventral flagellum, posteriorly directed, is 20–24 μm long and bears fine hairs. The flagellar roots consist of microtubules that emerge at satellites around the basal bodies and run along the flagellar pits. In addition, the ventral flagellum is accompanied by a band of six microtubules. It is proximally attached to a small fibrillar band, which interconnects the basal bodies. Cryothecomonas longipes has two or three types of extrusomes which pierce the theca when discharged. Their mode of discharge is discussed. Microbody-like vesicles containing small tubules are closely associated with older digestion vacuoles. Cryothecomonas longipes is compared with other species of the genus and a diagnosis is given. Abstract 1. The form of asymmetry in bilateral organs usually follows the same pattern within single populations. However, some exceptions may occur when a population consists of different phenotypes that are from different ontogenic backgrounds and under different selective pressures. We investigated the asymmetric patterns of mandibles of larvae, females, and males in the stag beetle Prosopocoilus inclinatus. 2. Larval mandibles exhibited directional asymmetry both in length and cross direction, whereas female mandibles showed directional asymmetry in cross direction. These asymmetric structures might be more effective in cutting wood fibres. 3. For the relation of male mandible length to body size, a model with a switch point showed a better fit to the data than a convex curve model. This shows that the males are dimorphic with two distinct morphs. 4. The form of asymmetry in male mandible length differed between the morphs. The smaller males exhibited left‐biased directional asymmetry in common with larvae, whereas the larger males exhibited fluctuating asymmetry. 5. This is a novel finding of a morph‐dependent asymmetry. The morph‐dependent asymmetry in males may be as a result of different selection on each morph or a developmental constraint from larval mandibles to adult ones.  相似文献
