Daphnia hyalina is a cladoceran present throughthe whole year except for late summer in Maranhão,a meso-eutrophic reservoir in central Portugal. Apartfrom the influence of food, both vertebrate andinvertebrate predation pressures seem to have aneffect on D. hyalina population dynamics.Enclosure experiments were designed to assess therelative importance of both types of predation. Afterthe summer crash, D. hyalina reached highernumbers in the fishless enclosures than in the lakedespite of high predation pressure upon juveniles byAcanthocyclops robustus. Fish predation upon thelargest individuals, especially large egg bearingfemales, was responsible for the lower fertility ofthe open water population when compared with theenclosure population. In the enclosures an increase intail spine length was observed. The longer tail spineprobably offered protection from copepod predation, allowing at least some of the juveniles to coexistwith their potential predator and reach the adultstage, less susceptible to copepod predation. 相似文献

We studied the combined effect of fish kairomones and food conditions on the relative tail spine length (RTL) of five Daphnia taxa, and the interaction of these factors with the vertical distribution of the daphnids. The experiment was done in two large-scale indoor containers, the so-called plankton towers in Plön, Germany. We conducted a competition experiment in which food level and the presence of fish chemicals and later fish were varied. A strong response of RTL to fish kairomones (e.g., longer tail spines), significant differences in RTL between species, but no differences in RTL with water depth were found. Further, we observed that these Daphnia taxa produced a higher RTL only under high food conditions. This suggests that there is a cost related to the production of longer tail spines. In a preliminary study in lake Plußsee, we found that Daphnia had longer average RTL than in the towers. Further, we noted significant differences in RTL between the two sampling dates, which may be related to a lower food level. We also detected a strong inverse correlation between RTL and depth. We discuss the implications of these findings for the co-existence of co-occurring Daphnia species and their hybrids. 相似文献

The predaceous calanoid copepod Parabroteas sarsi and Daphniamiddendorffiana co-exist in South Andes ponds. Daphnia middendorffianajuveniles have a tail spine with negative allometric development.A series ofexperiments was carried out with tailed and tail-removedjuveniles of three different instars. In all cases tested, feedingrates were significantly higher on tail-removed prey. Directobservations showed a higher frequency of unsuccessful attackson spined juveniles when compared with tail-removed juveniles. The proportion of dorsal attacks also increased in spined juveniles.Prey total length was a much better predictor of feeding ratethan prey body size. Three groups of juveniles with equal totallength, but differentage, body size and biomass, showed no significantdifferences in their vulnerability to predation. 相似文献

Predation is thought to play a selective role in the emergence of behavioural traits in prey. Differences in behaviour between prey demographics may, therefore, be driven by predation with select components of the population being less vulnerable to predators. While under controlled conditions prey demography has been shown to have consequences for predation success, investigations linking these implications to natural prey population demographics are scarce. Here we assess predator–prey dynamics between notonectid predators (backswimmers) and Lovenula raynerae (Copepoda), key faunal groups in temperate ephemeral pond ecosystems. Using a combination of field and experimental approaches we test for the development and mechanism of predation‐induced sex‐skewed ratios. A natural population of L. raynerae was tracked over time in relation to their predator (notonectid) and prey (Cladocera) numbers. In the laboratory, L. raynerae sex ratios were also assessed over time but in the absence of predation pressure. Predation success and prey performance experiments evaluating differences between L. raynerae male, female, gravid female and copulating pairs exposed to notonectid predation were then examined. Under natural conditions, a female dominated copepod population developed over time and was correlated to predation pressure, while under predator‐free conditions non sex‐skewed prey population demographics persisted. Predator–prey laboratory trials showed no difference in vulnerability and escape performance for male, female and gravid female copepods, but pairs in copula were significantly more vulnerable to predation. This vulnerability was not shared by both sexes, with only female copepods ultimately escaping from successful predation on a mating pair. These results suggest that contact periods during copula may contribute to the development of sex‐skewed copepod ratios over time in ecosystems dominated by hexapod predators. This is discussed within the context of vertebrate and invertebrate predation and how these dissimilar types of predation are likely to have acted as selective pressures for copepod mating systems. 相似文献

Seasonal morphological changes in three Daphnia species were followed over a two-year period in two lakes that differ in invertebrate and fish pressure. Whereas the morphology of D. hyalina, the biggest of the three species, varied little from season to season, D. cucullata, the smallest, exhibited the most pronounced seasonal changes in head height/carapace length ratio. The pattern of seasonal changes of body proportions was similar in all size classes and isometric growth of the head was reported for D. cucullata. Unlike the head, tail spine length/carapace length ratio almost did not vary seasonally. Strong negative allometry of tail spine growth was observed. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that helmets and tail spines provide protection against invertebrates in the two smallest, thus most endangered species. 相似文献

Species of the water flea Daphnia exhibit constitutive as wellas phenotypically inducible anti-predator defence strategies, involving life history, morphological and behavioural traits. We explored the hypothesis of genetic differentiation in anti-predatordefence strategies using Daphnia clones originating from twodifferent water bodies: Tjeukemeer (the Netherlands) and FishPond (Belgium). Both water bodies are inhabited by zooplanktivorousfish. In contrast to Tjeukemeer, Fish Pond is also inhabitedby larvae of the phantom midge Chaoborus. The life history responsesof the two sets of clones to kairomones from fish (Perca), tokairomones from Chaoborus, and to a mixture of both were compared.Clones from Tjeukemeer and Fish Pond showed strong responsesto the presence of fish kairomone, with reductions in adultand neonate body length, in age at first reproduction and inthe total number of neonates produced during the first threeadult instars. Responses to Chaoborus kairomone were much lesspronounced, although there was a tendency towards an increasein the number of neonates in the first brood. Significant inter-populationgenetic differences were found for all the investigated traits. However, there was no indication for genetic adaptation of theFish Pond clones to negative size-selective predation by Chaoborus.Compared to Tjeukemeer clones, Fish Pond clones had a lowersize at first reproduction, produced smaller neonates and produceda higher number of neonates in their first brood. This suggestsadaptation to positive rather than to negative size selectivepredation. Genetic differences between populations were observedmainly for constitutive life history traits, rather than forphenotypic shifts in response to the presence of predator kairomones. 相似文献

Experimental evidence for female choice and energetic costs of male tail elongation in red-collared widowbirds 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

The black nuptial plumage of the highly polygynous male red‐collared widowbird (Euplectes ardens) comprises a red carotenoid‐based collar patch and a long graduated tail (c. 22 cm). Tail length was the strongest predictor of male mating success in a previous selection analysis, motivating this experimental test of the relative importance of tail plumes in male contest competition and female choice. Males were assigned to either a short (12.5 cm) or control (20 cm) tail manipulation prior to territory establishment. Male contest competition was unaffected by the tail treatments as the shortened‐ and control‐tailed males were equally successful in acquiring territories of similar size and quality. In contrast, however, although the longer‐tailed control males spent less time in flight and courtship displays, they attracted significantly more prospecting and nearly three times as many nesting females to their territories compared to the short‐tailed males. In further support of tail length as the primary mate choice cue, none of the other measured and potential female cues (e.g. body size, collar colorimetrics, territorial behaviours or territory quality) influenced male reproductive success. In addition to potentially increasing detectability (‘signal efficacy’), the long tail is also a likely indicator of male quality (‘signal content’). Despite the higher activities of short‐tailed males, control‐tailed males showed a steeper decline in condition (relative body mass) during the breeding season. Furthermore, both short‐ and control‐tailed residents lost more condition than did the short‐ and control‐treated floaters (males not establishing territories), suggesting an interaction between tail length and the costs of territory acquisition, defence and courtship displays. These results confirm the role of mate choice and honest quality advertising as the main selection pressures behind elongated tails in widowbirds. © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2005, 86 , 35–43. 相似文献

Morphology and behaviour of Daphnia galeata in Lake Lille Lungegårdsvann, Bergen, Norway, were studied in two consecutive years. A portion of the population showed helmet cyclomorphosis in 1992, but no helmets developed in 1993. The non-helmeted individuals in 1992 were found in the littoral habitat during summer, whereas the helmeted morph stayed mainly in the pelagial. These differences in morphology and behaviour within and between years are likely to be caused by changes in predation regimes. Larvae of the predacious phantom midge, Chaoborus flavicans, were observed only in 1992, whereas the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, was present both years. 相似文献

Of all the environmental pressures that all organisms across all kingdoms must face, one of the greatest is the risk of predation. The unpredictability of predation events from the perspective of a single individual is one of the major components of a changing, unstable environment (Gliwicz and Pijanowska, 1989; Lampert, 1987). The panoply of antipredator defenses among terrestrial and aquatic organisms involves a variety of morphological, behavioral, and life-history adaptations that even if they are not life-saving, may enable organisms to complete reproduction before predation occurs. Most of these phenotypic changes are directly induced by cues associated with the biotic agent, in the case of aquatic organisms, the chemical compounds (kairomones) released by a predator into the water. Herein we show that exposure of Daphnia to invertebrate and vertebrate kairomones results in changes in motion, behavior, and life history and at the molecular level involves changes in heat-shock proteins (HSPs) level and the actin and tubulin cytoskeleton. In addition, some of these effects are transgenerational, i.e., they are passed on from the mother to her offspring. 相似文献

Musculo-skeletal modeling could play a key role in advancing our understanding of the healthy and pathological spine, but the credibility of such models are strictly dependent on the accuracy of the anatomical data incorporated. In this study, we present a complete and coherent musculo-skeletal dataset for the thoracic and cervical regions of the human spine, obtained through detailed dissection of an embalmed male cadaver. We divided the muscles into a number of muscle-tendon elements, digitized their attachments at the bones, and measured morphological muscle parameters. In total, 225 muscle elements were measured over 39 muscles. For every muscle element, we provide the coordinates of its attachments, fiber length, tendon length, sarcomere length, optimal fiber length, pennation angle, mass, and physiological cross-sectional area together with the skeletal geometry of the cadaver. Results were consistent with similar anatomical studies. Furthermore, we report new data for several muscles such as rotatores, multifidus, levatores costarum, spinalis, semispinalis, subcostales, transversus thoracis, and intercostales muscles. This dataset complements our previous study where we presented a consistent dataset for the lumbar region of the spine (Bayoglu et al., 2017). Therefore, when used together, these datasets enable a complete and coherent dataset for the entire spine. The complete dataset will be used to develop a musculo-skeletal model for the entire human spine to study clinical and ergonomic applications. 相似文献

A field study was conducted in the highly eutrophic, biomanipulated Bautzen Reservoir to investigate the influences of food conditions on fecundity of Daphnia galeata during spring and early summer in four consecutive years. By defining a relation between body size and maximum brood size, the realised reproductive potential (RRP) of Daphnia was expressed as percentage of actual egg numbers of the population in relation to calculated maximum egg numbers. This parameter is independent of the size structure of the population. It was found to correlate generally with mean clutch size. However, deviations occurred if size at maturity (SAM) declined. Extremely low SAM values (0.8 mm) were recorded in 2 years, corresponding with increasing food concentrations. Low clutch sizes in these situations can be explained by small body sizes of ovigerous females, whereas RRP increased, thus reflecting good food conditions. From the comparison of different reproductive parameters, it is concluded that RRP is the most reliable one with regard to bottom-up influences in case of extremely variable size structure and possible predation impacts. Fecundity of D. galeata was clearly food limited during the clear-water stage. Relatively high POC-threshold concentrations of 0.26 mg C l–1 suggest that food quality was low and may be equally important as food quantity in limiting egg production. 相似文献

To investigate the role of helmet formation in defense against predation, laboratory experiments were used to analyze the
effects of morphological changes in Daphnia on susceptibility to Chaoborus predation. Behavioral observations of Chaoborus preying on helmeted and non-helmeted Daphnia suggest pre-contact advantages for helmeted prey but post-contact advantages for non-helmeted prey. Helmeted Daphnia are better at evading capture by Chaoborus but may also be more easily handled by the predator. Swimming behavior of the prey, which is influenced by the presence of
a tailspine, may affect Chaoborus strike distance. These results re-emphasize the potential hydromechanical importance of body shape changes in defense against
predation. 相似文献

The interaction of Chaoborus size and vertical distribution determines predation effects on Daphnia 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. Larvae of Chaoborus, the phantom midge, are important pelagic planktivores in many freshwater lakes and ponds. The effect of Chaoborus on its prey depends on its size, especially mouth gape diameter, and vertical migration pattern, which affects predator–prey spatial overlap. These two features vary considerably in different Chaoborus species and instars. In this study, the interacting effects of both Chaoborus size and vertical distribution on population growth of Daphnia pulex was analysed with a field enclosure experiment and a matrix population model. 2. In the field experiment, Daphnia were grown in four replicated treatments that included a control (no Chaoborus) and three combinations of instar III and IV Chaoborus of two species (C. trivittatus and C. americanus). Parameters of the matrix model were based on differences between Chaoborus species and instars in capture and ingestion of Daphnia of differing sizes (prey vulnerability) and in vertical overlap with Daphnia in each treatment (density risk). 3. In comparison with the control, the two treatments containing the smaller, migratory C. americanus showed a significant effect on Daphnia population growth rate, while the treatment containing only the larger, non‐migratory C. trivittatus did not. The model accurately simulated these effects. 4. A Daphnia predation risk model, which uses prey vulnerability and density risk parameters, illustrated the individual and combined effect of the different Chaoborus types on Daphnia. Daphnia have a high prey vulnerability to the large C. trivittatus, but overall predation risk was low because of very little overlap. On the contrary, the smaller C. americanus affects only a small range of Daphnia instars, each with a low vulnerability, yet those instars that were vulnerable had a very high density risk because of an increased overlap. 5. This analysis of Daphnia predation risk parameters with coexisting Chaoborus species strongly supports an integrated approach using both size and vertical distribution to determine the ultimate predation effect on Daphnia. 相似文献

SUMMARY 1. We analysed the vulnerability of a number of cladoceran species ( Bosmina longirostris , B. fatalis , Diaphanosoma brachyurum , Ceriodaphnia reticulata , Daphnia ambigua and D. pulex ) to predation by Mesocyclops leuckarti in the laboratory.
2. The prey species represented a wide range of body size, morphology, and swimming behaviour. To compare vulnerability, we measured the efficiency of capture and ingestion of each prey species by Mesocyclops . We also measured the rate at which prey were damaged in attacks by Mesocyclops .
3. Mesocyclops preyed effectively on Diaphanosoma and small juvenile Ceriodaphnia but not on Bosmina or Daphnia . Observations suggested that various defence mechanisms, including protruding structures and swimming behaviour and speed, are important in determining prey vulnerability.
4. The body size of Daphnia and Ceriodaphnia seems to be important, because larger animals were better able to escape Mesocyclops attacks. Attacks by Mesocyclops often caused fatal damage, however, even to large Daphnia . 相似文献

Density and size structure changes of natural daphniids populations were studied in enclosures with a different level of fish predation. Daphnia pulicaria was totaly removed in high predation variants, and the differences of the mean body length both in adults and juveniles are apparent between low predation enclosure and enclosure without fish. Daphnia galeata was replaced by D. magna and D. pulicaria in the enclosure without fish. The decline of densities and the substantial (30–50%) and fast (during 12 days) shift of mean body length both in adults and juveniles of D. galeata was induced by the fish (carp fry) introduction to the high predation enclosures. 相似文献

Predicting group size in primates: foraging costs and predation risks 总被引:17,自引:2,他引:17
We present a direct test of the long-standing hypothesis thatfood competition limits primate group size. Group size is acritical social variable because it constrains most other aspectsof social organization. We develop a simple population-specificindex of indirect feeding competition based on daily foragingcosts. This index explains nearly two-thirds of between-populationvariation in mean group sizes of mostly fruit-eating (but notof mostly leaf-eating) primates. Group size is also significantlyrelated to body size and terrestriality (or use of open country),which are suspected correlates of predation risk, although feedingcompetition remains an important predictor of group size evenwhen these correlates are controlled. Phylogeny also appearsto be important: the differences between observed mean populationgroup sizes and those predicted using ecological factors aremost positive for the Old World monkeys and most negative forthe lemuroids in our sample. The weak relationship between groupsize and feeding competition found for folivorous species maybe explained either by the energetic constraints of a leafydiet or by limits to group size imposed by infanticide as ahabitual male reproductive strategy. 相似文献

The relative contributions of invertebrate predation (Notonectidae: Anisops spp.), food limitation, and certain abiotic factors in driving the population dynamics of Daphnia carinata were studied for a two year period in a large farm dam in southern Victoria, Australia. Detailed measurements were made on the population densities of Daphnia and Anisops spp., the amount of food available, the nutritional status, and the size-specific fecundity of Daphnia. The density of the Daphnia population at the field site oscillated closely with water temperature. The amplitude of the population fluctuations varied seasonally, being much greater during the warmer months of the year and switching to fluctuations with low peaks when water temperature dropped below approximately 15°C. Anisops spp. densities were greatest in winter and declined during the spring of each year. Nymphs appeared in late spring and early summer and numerically dominated the population. During the warmer periods of the year, the daphnid population went through a series of rapid growth phases leading to over-exploitation of food resources and subsequent population collapses. Daphnia population densities were not correlated with Anisops numbers suggesting that predation was not a major regulatory factor during the warmer periods of the year. When water temperatures fell below ca. 15°C daphnid population densities remained low despite high food levels. During this period the impact of Anisops may have been greater. Two distinct phases were identified: a warm water period when food limitation was the main regulatory factor, and a cool water period when Anisops predation may have been the paramount factor. Low oxygen concentrations were associated with heavy rainfall in the spring and may have had a limiting effect on Daphnia for short periods. Daphnia may have had an important role in sustaining the Anisops population in the pond over each winter. 相似文献

Populations of Daphnia galeata from the deep stratified moderately eutrophic reservoir and the shallow highly eutrophic carp ponds differed in the reproductive effort of the first laboratory generation cultivated at a rich algal diet. The reservoir animals were smaller at the first adult instar and exhibited longer time between hatching of one brood and forming the eggs of the next one. 相似文献

I develop a demographic model that examines the impact of Chaoborus predation on the population dynamics and life history of Daphnia. Predation effects are determined through analysis of the various components of the predator-prey interaction (encounter,
attack, strike efficiency), and are integrated into a stage-classified matrix population model. The model is parameterized
with data from interactions between D. pulex and fourth-instar C. americanus. I test this model with two laboratory experiments that examine population growth of D. pulex under the influence of five different levels of Chaoborus predation. With the exception of a single predation treatment in each experiment, the model accurately predicted the observed
reduction in Daphnia numbers with increasing Chaoborus predation. I then use this model to investigate the evolution of delayed reproduction in D. pulex that are exposed to Chaoborus. I ask whether delayed reproduction may evolve in Daphnia that are subjected to Chaoborus predation as a trade-off for the benefits of larger body size. The model predicts that the effectiveness of such a life history
trade-off depends on the relative sizes of predator and prey. In some interactions between Chaoborus and Daphnia, increasing Daphnia body length by as little as 5% from base growth trajectories sufficiently increases fitness (by reducing vulnerability to
Chaoborus predation) to compensate for the cost of delayed reproduction. In other interactions, however, increased body length provides
no benefit to Daphnia (and may even reduce fitness), and selection would act against the evolution of delayed reproduction.

A detailed analysis of two euplanktonic populations carried out in the same period, 18 May–11 August, 1978, in two neighboring Mazurian lakes revealed different patterns of changes in population densities and significant differences in fecundity, age structure and mean sizes of individuals despite similar epilimnion temperatures in the lakes. Similar densities were maintained in both populations although food limitation was less important and predation more intense in one than in the other of the two lakes. The relative importance of food limitation and predation is discussed in lakes of low and high fertility. It is also suggested that both low food concentration and high selective predation pressure favors small clutch sizes in cladocerans. 相似文献
