We used stable isotope analysis to examine food sources for early life-history stages of the vent crab Bythograea thermydron. During two cruises to a hydrothermal vent site along the East Pacific Rise, we collected a variety of endemic organisms, including approximately 300 specimens of B. thermydron. The crab collection consisted mainly of megalopae and early juveniles, but also included adults and a single zoea. As expected, the carbon-isotope composition of newly released zoeae (−12.2%) was similar to the female (−11.1%) and clearly different from megalopae (21.7%). Because we were unsuccessful in culturing the zoea larvae, we were not able to conduct experiments to determine the effect of diet on isotopic composition. The tissue of megalopae was depleted in 13C (−21.7%) when compared to indigenous prey species, but was similar to that expected for carnivorous zooplankton dependent on surface primary production. The nitrogen-isotope composition of megalopae was enriched in 15N (10%) relative to potential prey species, again suggesting a photosynthetic source of primary production. The mean carbon-isotope composition of newly metamorphosed juvenile crabs (−19.9%) resembled megalopae, while tissue from subsequent juvenile stages was enriched in 13C (−10.9%) with values similar to those measured in co-occurring prey species. These results imply that megalopae are dependent on a source of primary production exogenous to the vents, but switch to a vent-based food web soon after metamorphosis to the juvenile stage.  相似文献

The European green crab, Carcinus maenas, is an introduced marine predator established on the west coast of North America. We conducted laboratory experiments on the host specificity of a natural enemy of the green crab, the parasitic barnacle Sacculina carcini, to provide information on the safety of its use as a possible biological control agent. Four species of non-target, native California crabs (Hemigrapsus oregonensis, H. nudus, Pachygrapsus crassipes and Cancer magister) were exposed to infective larvae of S. carcini. Settlement by S. carcini on the four native species ranged from 33 to 53%, compared to 79% for green crabs. Overall, cyprid larvae tended to settle in higher numbers on individual green crabs than on either C. magister or H. oregonensis. However, for C. magister this difference was significant for soft-shelled, but not hard-shelled individuals. Up to 29% of the native crabs arrested early infections by melanizing the rootlets of the parasite. Most native and green crabs settled on by S. carcini became infected, especially when settled on by >3 cyprids. Infected green crabs died at more than twice the rate of uninfected green crabs. In contrast to green crabs, all infected native crabs died without producing an externa (reproductive sac). At high settlement intensities, infected native crabs frequently exhibited neurological symptoms (twitching, loss of movement) before death. These results indicate that use of S. carcini as a biological control agent could result in the death of native crabs. The magnitude of this effect would be proportional to the density of infected green crabs in the environment and the probability that cyprids would contact native crabs in the wild. Potential benefits of biological control should be assessed in relation to these potential non-target effects.  相似文献

We examined the species composition of red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) fouling communities in Dolgaya Bay, a small fjord of the Barents Sea, in August 2005 and 2006. In total, there were 13 species observed on 301 crabs collected from water depths of 5–90 m. Barnacles (Balanus crenatus; prevalence 42.9%) and blue mussels (Mytilus edulis; 11.6%) were the most common epibionts, while amphipods (Ischyrocerus commensalis) were the most common symbionts (28.6%). Infestation rates in Dolgaya Bay were different from those in an “open” area of the Barents Sea (Dalnezelenetskaya Bay), probably due to differences in hydrodynamic conditions. Differences in infestation prevalence and intensity were detected neither between male and female crabs nor between crabs collected at 5–35 m versus 90 m depths. Prevalence of common fouling species increased with host size. Amphipods I. commensalis colonized the carapace and limbs in Dolgaya Bay less frequently than in Dalnezelenetskaya Bay, probably due to interspecific competition with barnacles occupying the dorsal parts of the host. Juvenile barnacles and mussels dominated the fouling communities on the crabs. The age of barnacles did not exceed 2–4 months. However, the presence of 4-year-old mussels suggests that these older mollusks have been directly transferred from mussel beds to the hosts. Our results indicate that colonization by epibionts and symbionts is generally not disadvantageous for the crab hosts, except for some possible negative impacts of amphipods occupying the gills.  相似文献

This paper describes size composition, morphometric, and reproductive parameters of the summer generation of the amphipod Ischyrocerus anguipes (Krǿyer, 1838) associated with the red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus (Tilesius, 1815) in Dalnezelenetskaya Bay (southern Barents Sea, Russia). In summer 2004–2007, prevalence and mean number of I. anguipes per host were 15.0% and 6.9 ± 1.1 specimens, respectively. The majority of amphipods were found on the host carapace (47.4%) and the limbs (43.9%). High infestation indices and absence of negative impacts for the host indicate that I. anguipes is a facultative commensal of the red king crab. The amphipods sex ratio was significantly biased toward females (F:M = 2:1). Females had a greater size than males. The size at 50% maturity of I. anguipes females was estimated to be 3.37 mm. The number of eggs laid is linearly correlated with the size of a female. Some differences in biological features of symbiotic and free-living amphipods (data obtained in 1940–1950) may be explained by climatic changes in the Barents Sea or advantages of living on the crab.  相似文献

Large invasive predators like the king crab, Paralithodes camtschaticus, deserve particular attention due to their potential for catastrophic ecological impact on recipient communities. Conspicuous, epibenthic prey species, such as the slow growing commercial scallop Chlamys islandica, are particularly exposed to the risk of local extinction. A research program integrating experiments and field monitoring is attempting to predict and track the impact of invasive king crab on scallop beds and associated fauna along the north Norwegian coast. The claw gape of the crab shows no limitations in handling the flat-bodied scallop. However, the potential impact of the crab on scallop may depend on the availability of other calcified prey associated with scallop beds, such as the sea star, sea urchin, and blue mussel, all species recorded in the diet of P. camtschaticus. To address this issue, a laboratory experiment on foraging behaviour of P. camtschaticus was conducted. The experimental results show that all size classes of red king crab prefer scallops, but small juveniles and medium sized crabs demonstrate active selection for starfish (Asterias rubens) that equals or surpasses the electivity of the large crab. The selection of sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) and blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) is slightly positive or neutral for the three crab size classes. These results suggest that scallop beds with a rich associated fauna are less vulnerable to red king crabs predation and possibly more resilient than beds with few associated species. Also, crab size distribution is likely relevant for invasion impact, with increasing abundance of small and medium sized crabs being detrimental for alternative calcified prey associated with scallop beds. Successive stages of crab invasion will see an acceleration of scallop mortality rates associated with (i) decreasing availability of alternative prey, due to protracted predation pressure intensified by recruitment of juvenile crabs, and (ii) increased number of large crabs. Estimates of crab density and intake rates suggest that the accelerated loss rates will eventually endanger scallop beds persistence.  相似文献

Ceratocystiopsis, Ceratocystis, Grosmannia, and Ophiostoma species were isolated from Ips subelongatus and beetle-infested Japanese larch logs collected at several areas in central and northern Honshu Island, Japan, to determine constant associates of I. subelongatus. Ceratocystiopsis minuta, two species of Ceratocystis, three species of Grosmannia, and four species of Ophiostoma were isolated. Of the fungi isolated in the present study, G. laricis, O. brunneociliatum, and O. piceae were constant associates of the beetles. Ceratocystis fujiensis, Ceratocystiopsis minuta, and Ophiostoma sp. F were occasionally isolated with high frequencies of occurrence but were not consistent associates. Ceratocystis fujiensis was most often isolated as the leading fungal invasion in the sapwood of Japanese larch logs invaded by I. subelongatus, confirming that the fungus acts as a primary invader of sapwood in beetle-attacked logs. In order to acquire information on the factors influencing the distribution of the Mediterranean endemic species Portumnus lysianassa (Herbst, 1796), which lives in the soft substratum midlittoral zone, 83 stations were selected along almost the entire Greek coast. In each sampling station, dredging was carried out, just above the rise of the surf zone, and sediment samples were taken with a core sampler. Two faunal samples were also taken by means of a quadrat from the lower midlittoral zone. The preliminary results of this study show that: P. lysianassa prefers to burrow in the rise of the surf zone; wherever the sediment becomes very coarse or very fine the crab populations decline; there is a correlation between the population abundance of the midlittoral bivalve Donacilla cornea (Poli, 1795) and P. lysianassa, and, moreover, this crab species is related to the composition of the midlittoral assemblage; also, P. lysianassa abundance is negatively correlated with the organic matter content of the sediment; in very exposed areas, D. cornea can be replaced or co-exist with the infralittoral species Donax trunculus (Linnaeus, 1758), and, in these cases, P. lysianassa can be replaced by the closely related infralittoral species Portumnus latipes (Pennant, 1777); when low temperatures or intensive wave action, as well as disturbance caused by swimmers in summer prevail, the population of this crab descends in the upper infralittoral zone.  相似文献

While it is well-established that the spatial distribution of soil nutrients (soil heterogeneity) influences the competitive ability and survival of individual plants, as well as the productivity of plant communities, there is a paucity of data on how soil heterogeneity and global change drivers interact to affect plant performance and ecosystem functioning. To evaluate the effects of elevated CO2, soil heterogeneity and diversity (species richness and composition) on productivity, patterns of biomass allocation and root foraging precision, we conducted an experiment with grassland assemblages formed by monocultures, two- and three-species mixtures of Lolium perenne, Plantago lanceolata and Holcus lanatus. The experiment lasted for 90 days, and was conducted on microcosms built out of PVC pipe (length 38 cm, internal diameter 10 cm). When nutrients were heterogeneously supplied (in discrete patches), assemblages exhibited precise root foraging patterns, and had higher total, above- and belowground biomass. Greater aboveground biomass was observed under elevated CO2. Species composition affected the below:aboveground biomass ratio and interacted with nutrient heterogeneity to determine belowground and total biomass. Species richness had no significant effects, and did not interact with either CO2 or nutrient heterogeneity. Under elevated CO2 conditions, the two- and three-species mixtures showed a clear trend towards underyielding. Our results show that differences among composition levels were dependent on soil heterogeneity, highlighting its potential role in modulating diversity–productivity relationships. An outbreak of the nemertean, Carcinonemertes epialti, was observed on Hemigrapsus oregonensis during October, 1982 at Campbell Cove, Bodega Harbor, California. Mean worm intensity (296 worms/crab) was the highest recorded for this nemertean egg predator on H. oregonensis. During the outbreak, male crabs were found to harbor more worms than both non-ovigerous and ovigerous females. Crab egg mortality was substantial; 83% of the ovigerous females experienced 75–100% brood mortality. The seasonal peak in worm abundance coincided with the seasonal low in crab reproduction at this locality. A method for estimating the impact of C. epialti on H. oregonensis natality was developed using crab size and fecundity, and worm prevalence and intensity. For a non-outbreak sampling period, a mean of 5.6% egg mortality was experienced by infested crabs for the period selected. Thus, brood mortality during the outbreak was much greater than that experienced at non-outbreak periods. Heavy fishing pressure on some commercially important crab species has been suggested as a possible factor inducing worm outbreaks and facilitating their continued persistence. These observations suggest that fisheries are not necessarily responsible for the outbreaks of nemerteans on commercially important crab species. However, fishing pressure may still be a sufficient condition to promote nemertean outbreaks.  相似文献

This study represents the first demersal trawl survey of marine fishes and invertebrates in offshore waters of the Beaufort Sea since 1977. Species composition, distribution, and abundance of demersal fish and benthic invertebrates were assessed with standard methods and demersal trawl gear by the Alaska Fisheries Science Center. Fishes made up 6% of the total catch weight, and invertebrates made up the remaining 94% of the catch weight. A total of 32 species of fish were identified, two taxa were identified to genus and one to family, and 174 taxa of invertebrates were identified. The most abundant demersal fishes were polar cod (Boreogadus saida), eelpouts (Lycodes spp.), Bering flounder (Hippoglossoides robustus), and walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma). The most abundant invertebrates were notched brittle stars (Ophiura sarsi), snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio), mussels (Musculus spp.), and the mudstar (Ctenodiscus crispatus). We documented or confirmed extension to the known ranges of four species of fishes: walleye pollock, Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus), festive snailfish (Liparis marmoratus), and eyeshade sculpin (Nautichthys pribilovius). We also documented the presence of commercial-sized snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio), which has not previously been recorded in the North American Arctic.  相似文献

Species richness and composition of the Chrysomelidae (Coleoptera) were studied in larch (Larix kaempheri [Lamb.] Carrière) plantations, secondary forests, and primary forests. In addition, the effects of forest management practices, such as thinning and long rotation, were examined in the larch plantation. The species richness of Chrysomelidae was higher in the larch plantation than in the secondary forest or in the primary forest. Among the larch plantations, the species richness in old-aged plantations was higher than that in middle-aged plantations. The composition of the beetle assemblages in the larch plantation differed from that in the secondary forest or in the primary forest. Exosoma akkoae (Chujo), Batophila acutangula Heikertinger, and Calomicrus nobyi Chujo were caught with a bias toward the larch plantation. Longitarsus succineus (Foudras) and Sphaeroderma tarsatum Baly were caught more in the secondary forest and the primary forest, respectively. More B. acutangula and S. tarsatum were caught in stands where their host plants occurred at higher rates. Species richness of understory plants was an important factor for chrysomlid species richness, and frequency of host occurrence affected the number of individuals of leaf beetles examined. It seems that forest types and forest management practices affect host plants as well as Chrysomelidae, and that these effects on the host plants also influence chrysomelid assemblages.  相似文献

Interspecific competition is assumed to have a strong influence on the population dynamics of competing species, but is not easily demonstrated for mobile species in the wild. In the Florida Keys (USA), anecdotal observations have long pointed to an inverse relationship in abundance of two large decapod crustaceans found co-occurring in hard-bottom habitat, the stone crab Menippe mercenaria and the Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus. We used them to explicitly test whether competition for a renewable resource (shelter) can drive the abundance and distribution of the inferior competitor. We first explored this relationship in shelter competition mesocosm experiments to determine the competitively dominant species. Results showed that stone crabs are clearly the dominant competitors regardless of the number of lobsters present, the presence of co-sheltering species such as the spider crab, Damithrax spinosissimus, or the order of introduction of competitors into the mesocosm. We also found that lobsters use chemical cues from stone crabs to detect and avoid them. We then tested the ramifications of this competitive dominance in the field by manipulating stone crab abundance and then tracking the abundance and distribution of spiny lobsters through time. Increased stone crab abundance immediately resulted in decreased lobster abundance and increased aggregation. The opposite occurred on sites where stone crabs were removed. When we stopped removing stone crabs from these sites, they soon returned and lobster abundance decreased. This study explicitly demonstrated that interspecific competition can drive population dynamics between these species, and ultimately, community composition in these shallow water habitats.  相似文献

Recently, the importance of seed predation by crabs on mangrove species distributions and densities has been established by several studies. In a tropical coastal terrestrial forest in Costa Rica, we investigated the relative importance of predation by land crabs, Gecarcinus quadratus, and hermit crabs, Coenobita compressus, on measured forest composition through a series of seed removal and seedling establishment experiments. We also used natural light-gaps and adjacent non-gap sites to test how canopy cover affects crab predation (seed removal) and seedling establishment. We found fewer tree species (S=18) and lower densities (seedlings, saplings, and adults) in the coastal zone within 100 m of coastline, than in the inland zone (S=59). Land crab densities were higher in the coastal zone (3.03±1.44 crabs m–2) than in the inland zone (0.76±0.78 crabs m–2), and hermit crabs were not present in the inland zone. Seed removal and seedling mortality also were higher in the coastal zone than in the inland zone, and in the open controls than in the crab exclosures. Mortality of seeds and seedlings was two to six times higher in the controls than exclosures for four of the five experiments. Crabs preferred seeds and younger seedlings over older seedlings but showed no species preferences in the seed (Anacardium excelsum, Enterolobium cyclocarpum, and Terminalia oblonga) and seedling (Pachira quinata and E. cyclocarpum) stages. We conclude that the observed differences in tree densities were caused by differential crab predation pressure along the coastal gradient, while the differences in species composition were due to predator escape (satiation) by seed quantity. Canopy cover did not affect seed removal rates, but did affect seedling survival with higher mortality in the non-gap versus gap environments. In summary, crab predation of seeds and seedlings, and secondarily canopy cover, are important factors affecting tree establishment in terrestrial coastal forests.  相似文献

In this study, we describe for the first time the composition of epibiotic protozoan communities on juvenile southern king crabs Lithodes santolla. Basibionts were collected in subantarctic bays near Santa Ana Point (Magellan Strait, Chile). Seven epibiotic protozoan ciliates were found: Ephelota gemmipara, Ephelota gigantea, Podophrya fixa, Acineta tuberosa, Zoothamnium duplicatum, Chilodochona quennerstedti and Gymnodinioides sp. The mean number of epibionts per crab was 99 (maximum 897). Both Ephelota species were the most abundant and most widely distributed epibionts on the crab examined. The lengths of basibionts were correlated with the number of epibionts, indicating a relationship between the age of the crab and the state of epibiosis. Epibionts differed in their distribution patterns along the anteroposterior axis of the crab. Less abundant species tended to occupy sites that are not colonized by the predominant Ephelota species. Maxillipeds and pereiopods were most densely colonized by epibionts. The behaviours of epibionts and basibionts related to epibiosis are discussed. The recent studies about invasive lithodids in Antarctic areas enhance the interest for the epibiotic communities colonizing these crustaceans, which can illustrate changes in biodiversity and state of these environments.  相似文献

Species composition, size distribution, egg number and biomass of different amphipod species on littoral submerged aquatic vegetation (Myriophyllum, spicatum and Potamogeton perfoliatus stands) and on the stony shores of Lake Balaton at Tihany were estimated in August 1983 and 1985. Three species occurred in the material: Corophium curvispinum, Dikerogammarus haemobaphes and Dikerogammarus villosus. The bulk was formed by C. curvispinum. The mean number of eggs per female of the three investigated species showed differences at the different sampling stations and ranged between the following values: C. curvispinum from 3.3 to 8.8, D. haemobaphes from 16.4 to 22.8 and D. villosus from 8.0 to 17.5. The total biomass of amphipods was 1.8 and 3.5 mg dry weight/g fresh weight of macrophytes in 1983 and 1985 respectively, and 4.7 mg animal per dm2 stone surface in the stony littoral zone in 1983.  相似文献

The lady crab (Ovalipes ocellatus) is one of the most common native species of swimming crab (Portunidae) of the Atlantic Coast of North America but most populations occur south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. There is a disjunct population in Northumberland Strait (southern Gulf of St Lawrence), which was the focus of this study. Adult lady crabs were collected by trawling in water >4 m deep from May to October 1999 to 2005 to determine abundance, distribution, and diet. Lady crab occurred only in a small area (about 2,500 km2) in the central part of Northumberland Strait where bottom water temperature was >18°C during summer, and the substrate was mainly sand or sandy gravel. Male lady crab attained a maximum carapace width (CW) of 112 mm compared to 92 mm CW for females. The summer and autumn diet consisted mainly of infauna. The principal prey (each >5% of diet by weight) were: small bivalve molluscs (primarily Atlantic razor clam Siliqua costata and Macoma sp.; 43%), small rock crab (Cancer irroratus; 13%), polychaetes (11%), fish remains (9%), and small lady crab (9%). All stomachs collected during May (water temperature ≤10°C) were empty. There was little evidence of any difference in feeding intensity between 0700 h and 1900 h.

It is widely accepted that the fossil record shows both the evolution of more powerful durophagous marine predators through time and, in response, major shifts in life mode and morphology for many prey taxa. Few fossil studies, however, have successfully identified particular predator species with respect to causing evolutionary change in particular prey species. We present evidence that the evolutionary appearance in the western Atlantic of the stone crab, Menippe mercenaria, an extraordinarily powerful durophagous predator, contributed to the appearance of sinistrality, which is very rare, in two genera of marine gastropods (Conus and Sinistrofulgur) during the Pliocene. Based on this conclusion, we suggest that modern fishing pressure on stone crabs may lead to evolutionary changes in their present day prey.  相似文献

Landings from the whelk fishery in the southwest Irish Sea rose from 63 t in 1990 to 6587 t in 1996 although landings declined to 2919 tonnes in 1998. Whelk are caught in pots baited with a combination of dogfish Scyliorhinus spp and brown crab Cancer pagurus. The input of bait crab is estimated at 7.2% of whelk landed. Most of the crab comes from southeast Ireland where some of it is a by-product of the claw fishery; some is targeted as bait crab, and this includes sub-size or recently moulted individuals. Fishing effort has been increasing on brown crab for human consumption also and there is concern about the sustainability of the crab fishery. Alternative bait trials examined a number of readily available fish species, some of them offals, whose attractiveness was evaluated by reference to crab and dogfish: whitefish (whiting and cod), pelagic species (mackerel and scad) and blue mussel. An artificial bait ration which included some crab meat, but 60% less than its natural equivalent, proved as effective as natural bait crab. A bait which consisted of a single species was less successful than two species fished together and some of the combinations (notably of whitefish) performed very effectively. Pelagic species performed poorly. The trade in brown crab for human consumption will always produce some form of discards which should be used; extending its use in an artificial bait is desirable.  相似文献
