Quantitative seasonal population estimates ofMysis relicta at shallow and deep stations in Emerald Bay, an isolated (forMysis) embayment of Lake Tahoe, California-Nevada, Donner Lake and Fallen Leaf Lake show thatM. relicta exhibits size dependent horizontal migrations. Adults inhabit deep water where they release young in early spring. The newly released juveniles migrate to shallow water where they remain until late summer when they return to deep water. Maximum daily consumption was estimated for Mysis relicta fedad libitum rations of Daphnia pulex at 4,10,15 and 18°C.Gut-residence time was also evaluated for M.relicta fed clado-ceranprey at 4, 10 and 157deg;C. Mean daily consumption (g dry weightof Daphnia g–1 dry weight of Mysis day–1) rangedfrom 6% at 4%C to 12% at 10°. At 18°C, Mysis feedingrate declined to 9% day1. Mean, weight-adjusted consumptionrates exhibited a ‘dome-shaped’ response in relationto water temperature. Consumption rate was highest at 10°Cand lowest at 4°C. Estimated Q10 was more sensitive from4 to 10°C (Q10= 3) than from 10 to 15°C (Q10=1.2). Gut-residencetime for Mysis was inversely related to water temperature, implyingthat evacuation rate increases linearly with water temperature.Feeding and gut-evacuation rates become disassociated at watertemperatures >10°C. As water temperature increased above1°C, relative evacuation rate increased, whereas feedingrate declined. This review discusses the known features of diurnal vertical migration in the opossum shrimpMysis relicta. Field observations describe a noctural pattern which is correlated to changing patterns of illumination. Hypothesis that offer evolutionary origins of vertical migration are presented which link trophic interactions of the migrator to their predators and prey. These couplings are examined for the case ofMysis relicta. All of the hypotheses are partially supported byMysis behavior.  相似文献

Submersible dives provided an opportunity to observe the opossumshrimp. Mysis relicta, in Lake Superior (64°54'N, 67°09'W,depth = 280 m). Observations included probable mating, midwaterand benthic responses, and several swimming modes. While matingthe male and female were joined in a ventral to ventral positionby interlaced thoracic appendages. During the evening ascentor predawn descent mysids actively swam vertically upwards anddownwards using their thoracic appendages which beat metachronally.When escaping from the bottom, mysids thrust their abdomensdownwards and rapidly accelerate directly forwards. The midwaterresponse, significantly slower than the benthic response, wasa jerky laterally undulatory movement which propelled the animalat a 45° angle from the forward motion. In a cruising modeMysis swims with its periopods, parallel to the bottom, at approximatespeeds of 2–5 cm–1. A remotely operated vehiclewas employed to observe mysids at close range at the sediment–waterinterface at deep-water and nearshore stations in northern LakeMichigan (44°34'N, 87°7'W, depth = 100 m, Algoma, Wisconsinharbor, depth = 20 m) during May 23–25, 1987. At the 20m inshore station mysids occurred in significant numbers duringthe day in very bright light. Mysid swimming behavior on thebottom at deep-water stations significantly fashioned the sedimentlandscape, a potentially important form of superficial bioturbation.  相似文献

The variation in eye spectral sensitivities of the closely related mysid species Mysis relicta Lovén, 1862 and Mysis salemaai Audzijonyt? and Väinölä, 2005 was studied in sympatric and allopatric populations from the brackish Baltic Sea and from two lakes representing different light environments. In the Baltic Sea the maximum spectral sensitivity of M. relicta, measured by the electroretinogram (ERG) technique, was shifted by ca 20 nm to longer wavelengths than in M. salemaai (564 and 545 nm, respectively). The spectral sensitivity of M. salemaai was closer to that of marine mysid species, which is consistent with its broader euryhalinity and the presumed longer brackish-water history. The species-specific sensitivities in the Baltic Sea were not affected by regional differences in light environments. In two lake populations of M. relicta, the spectral sensitivity was further shifted by ca 28 nm towards the longer wavelengths compared with the conspecific Baltic Sea populations. The spectral sensitivities in the four M. relicta populations were not correlated to the current light conditions, but rather to the phylogeographic histories and fresh- vs. brackish-water environments. A framework to further explore factors affecting spectral sensitivities in Mysis is suggested.  相似文献

Aspects of the evolution of intralacustrine species flocks and of the origin of the Arctic or “glacial-relict” zoogeographical element in Eurasian inland waters were elucidated in an allozyme study of the crustacean genus Mysis. This element, of supposedly northern marine ancestry, is represented by vicarious taxa in the deeper parts of the Caspian Sea (an enclosed ancient basin) and in young boreal lakes. The three endemic Caspian Mysis species studied are very close genetically (Nei's D = 0.06), which suggests a recent intrabasin radiation and rapid morphological divergence. This is in contrast to the pattern in postglacial Holarctic boreal lakes, where the Mysis relicta group is represented by a set of morphologically uniform but probably much older sibling species (D = 0.3–0.6). The results provide a parallel to those on the recent diversification of some fish species flocks in ancient freshwater lakes. The situation is, however, unusual in that the Caspian sympatric Mysis flock is pelagic, and conditions promoting speciation through allopatric isolation or spatial segregation by trophic substrate specialization seem implausible. The monophyletic Caspian Mysis clade shows a relatively strong divergence from both the northern lacustrine and the Arctic marine congeners (D = 0.6–1.0); the phylogenetic branching order of these three zoogeographical groups is not conclusively resolved. The results contradict the prevailing hypothesis of a recent Pleistocene origin of the Caspian Arctic element by invasion from Eastern European continental proglacial lakes that drained south to the Caspian basin during the glacial maxima and served as refugia for the boreal lacustrine taxa.  相似文献

Following the disappearance of all Lake Tahoe cladocera in 1970,Daphnia rosea reappeared in the lake during the summer and fallof 1983. Since the introduction and population increase of theomnivorous opossum shrimp, Mysis relicta, was heavily implicatedin the initial disappearance, we investigated the D. rosea recurrencewith respect to fluctuating M. relicta abundance and steadilyincreasing primary productivity. An analysis of D. rosea populationdynamics, fecundity, feeding characteristics and M. relictafeeding selectivity, suggested that D. rosea was able to coexistwith M. relicta in 1983 only because D. rosea birth rates weresubstantially higher than historical levels due to the increasein algal productivity since 1970. The variation of cladoceransuccess in lakes of M. relicta introductions may be due, inlarge part, to variations in primary productivity.  相似文献

The abundance, biomass, and life history traits of Mysis relicta were evaluated in the spring, summer, and autumn of 2000 at 8 nearshore (45 m) and 8 offshore (75–110 m) stations throughout central and southern Lake Michigan. Abundance was also evaluated on a smaller scale during June 2000 at 4 nearshore and 4 offshore stations in southeastern Lake Michigan. For large-scale sampling, the abundance of M. relicta did not differ among locations in the spring. In the summer and autumn the abundance of M. relicta was similar among offshore stations with the exception of one station each season; for nearshore stations, abundance was generally highest off Pentwater, Michigan. The abundance of mysids was not consistently high for central or southern basin sites, although overall biomass was higher in the southern basin each season. Abundance of Mysis was positively correlated with bottom depth, but not with bottom water temperature, surface water temperature, or mean chlorophyll concentration. Within the smaller region in southeast Lake Michigan, the abundance of M. relicta differed among locations for both nearshore and offshore stations. Brood size and size of reproductive females did not differ among lake wide locations, but the proportion of females with broods and the size distribution of M. relicta did.  相似文献

  1. Diel vertical migration (DVM) is common in aquatic organisms. The trade-off between reduced predation risk in deeper, darker waters during the day and increased foraging opportunities closer to the surface at night is a leading hypothesis for DVM behaviour.
  2. Diel vertical migration behaviour has dominated research and assessment frameworks for Mysis, an omnivorous mid-trophic level macroinvertebrate that exhibits strong DVM between benthic and pelagic habitats and plays key roles in many deep lake ecosystems. However, some historical literature and more recent evidence indicate that mysids also remain on the bottom at night, counter to expectations of DVM.
  3. We surveyed the freshwater Mysis literature using Web of Science (WoS; 1945–2019) to quantify the frequency of studies on demographics, diets, and feeding experiments that considered, assessed, or included Mysis that did not migrate vertically but remained in benthic habitats. We supplemented our WoS survey with literature searches for relevant papers published prior to 1945, journal articles and theses not listed in WoS, and additional references known to the authors but missing from WoS (e.g. only 47% of the papers used to evaluate in situ diets were identified by WoS).
  4. Results from the survey suggest that relatively little attention has been paid to the benthic components of Mysis ecology. Moreover, the literature suggests that reliance on Mysis sampling protocols using pelagic gear at night provides an incomplete picture of Mysis populations and their role in ecosystem structure and function.
  5. We summarise current knowledge of Mysis DVM and provide an expanded framework that more fully considers the role of benthic habitat. Acknowledging benthic habitat as an integral part of Mysis ecology will enable research to better understand the role of Mysis in food web processes.

1. Life history, fecundity and energy ingestion were compared for non-native Mysis relicta in Flathead Lake, Montana, and in Waterton Lake, Montana/Alberta, where the mysid is native. 2. Based on estimates from stomach contents, M. relicta in Flathead Lake consumed three to four times more energy per hour while foraging than M. relicta from Waterton Lake. The primary prey of M. relicta in Flathead Lake was Daphnia thorata. Diaptomus sicilis was the primary prey for M. relicta in Waterton Lake. 3. Mysis relicta in Flathead Lake had a 1-year life history. It took 2 years for M. relicta in Waterton Lake to complete a generation. Mysis relicta from Flathead Lake produced significantly (P < 0.05) more eggs per female (19.9 ± 4.7) compared to M. relicta in Waterton Lake (13.7 ± 3.6). The lipid content in eggs from M. relicta in Flathead Lake was also significantly (P < 0.05) higher than eggs from M. relicta in Waterton Lake. 4. In Flathead Lake, M. relicta is able effectively to exploit Daphnia thorata, consuming greater biomass than M. relicta in Waterton Lake. Mysis relicta efficiently assimilates the greater biomass, which reduces generation time, increases fecundity, and increases lipid reserves of offspring. These results provide evidence of energetic mechanisms that enable M. relicta to colonize and affect foodwebs when introduced into lakes.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The expansion of zebra mussel distribution into inlandwaterways of North America portends significant abiotic andbiotic changes mediated either directly or indirectly by Dreissena.Dreissena fouls a wide array of submerged substrates includingrock surfaces, macrophytes, native molluscs, canal and dockwalls, and watercraft and motor outdrives. Fouling of waterintake pipes and associated installations can severely impairwater delivery to hydroelectric, municipal and industrial users,necessitating proactive or reactive control measures. Musselsincrease water clarity by removing suspended clay, silt, bacteria,phytoplankton, and small zooplankton. Clear water phases associatedwith Dreissena grazing may exceed in magnitude and durationthose generated by zooplankton grazing. Enhanced water clarityincreases light transmittance and growth of benthic plants.Some benthic invertebrates {e.g., unionid molluscs) are adverselyaffected by Dreissena, whereas others, including amphipod crustaceans,exploit structure associated with or wastes generated by zebramussels. Dreissena is exploited by a host of predators, mostnotably waterfowl, fish and crayfish. Waterfowl predators thatconsume contaminated Dreissena have elevated concentrationsof organic pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyl compounds.Invasion of shallow lakes and ponds by Dreissena may divertproduction and biomass from pelagic to benthic foodwebs, shiftingecosystems to an alternative state.  相似文献

Mysis relicta has been recognized as an important component of many limnetic food webs. The first approach to studying the feeding habits ofM. relicta was the analysis of stomach contents. Assumptions regarding stomach content analysis have been tested and seasonal feeding estimates ofM. relicta have been reported recently. Laboratory grazing and/or predation experiments have recently been completed usingM. relicta primarily from Lakes Michigan and Tahoe.Mysis relicta is concluded to be opportunistic, capable of utilizing a variety of food resources. The distribution of two Daphnia species dominant in near-surfacewaters of a eutrophic lake, Lake Ros, showed offshore-inshoregradients in density with a dramatic decrease towards nearshorewaters, suggesting a strong ‘shore-avoidance’ behavior.Much smaller body sizes and much smaller clutches in the nearshorefractions of the two populations, however, showed that the lowerpopulation density of each species in the nearshore areas wasrather a direct effect of high mortality selectively generatedin more conspicuous larger individuals and in individuals withgreater clutches that are more vulnerable to predation by littoralfish, mostly abundant perch juveniles. Hydroacoustic and trawlingdata revealed that young perch move offshore in the eveningto feed on pelagic zooplankton, but their feeding cannot beas efficient later in the dark when they eventually reach themost distant Daphnia patch in the center of the lake. High predationrisk in the littoral neighborhood may be considered an ultimatefactor behind the evolution of shore-avoidance behavior in zooplankton.  相似文献

The seasonal dynamics of Kellicottia longispina in Lake Tahoe and an isolated embayment of Lake Tahoe, Emerald Bay, were investigated for an 18-month period in 1977–79. Population birth and death rates were similar in the two systems, although productivity and Mysis relicta densities were higher in Emerald Bay. The timing of population changes was also similar. A major population increase in late winter 1978 was preceded by an increase in egg ratio; the subsequent spring decline of K. longispina was concurrent with decreased birth rates and increased death rates. Empty loricas of K. longispina were occasionally abundant in the plankton samples and seemed to result from K. longispina deaths when densities were high and when egg ratios were declining; it is possible that population senescence was responsible for the high densities of empty loricas observed. A potentially important predator, M. relicta, defecates K. longispina remains in compact fecal pellets; however, it is unlikely that the observed empty loricas resulted from Mysis-related deaths.  相似文献

Microspectrophotometric measurements of screening granules in Mysis relicta eyes showed that most of the granules have xanthommatin spectra (7nmax 455 nm) with selective absorption of blue light. We calculated spectral sensitivity of M.relicta eyes using screening granules absorption spectra and visual pigment absorption spectra. According to our computations the calculated spectral sensitivity curve appears to be in a good correspondence with the real spectral sensitivity.  相似文献

Large areas of the Baltic Sea bottoms suffer from low oxygen conditions and anoxia, impoverishing the benthic macrofauna. The important macrofaunal function bioturbation, which improves the transport of oxygen into the sediment does not occur in an absence of benthic macrofauna. The objective of this study was to investigate if a semi-pelagic species, like the mysid crustacean Mysis relicta, is able to improve the oxygen conditions of the sediment and thereby acts as a facilitator for re-colonization of azoic sediments by benthic species. We also wanted to study the potential of M. relicta in breaking the diffusive boundary layer under varying degrees of oxygen deficiency. Three types of sediment qualities were used to mimic the severity of oxygen deficiency. Under normoxia, moderate hypoxia (40% O2) and hypoxia, (20% O2) M. relicta's bioturbation activity was studied by recording oxygen profiles in sediments with and without mysids. In normoxia the mysids were able to oxygenize the sediment independent of sediment quality. The results show that mysids are able to bioturbate the sediment to some extent in hypoxia independent of the sediment quality. In all treatments with mysids the diffusive boundary layer was more or less completely broken down. In normoxia treatment with sediment of very low quality the mysids prevented growth of the sulphur bacteria Beggiatoa spp. which usually occurs on anoxic bottoms. The ability of this semi-pelagic species to improve benthic oxygen conditions can be seen as an important first step in re-colonization by real benthic species.  相似文献

1. The glacial relict, Mysis relicta, which occurs mainly in unproductive cold water habitats, shows increased mortality rates in temperatures above 16–18 °C. Using a 12‐year data set the growth, mortality and fat stores of Mysis in Lough Neagh, an increasingly hypertrophic lake which lacks a thermal refuge and which is subject to warming, were investigated. 2. Mysis showed a significant reduction in fat stores on reaching sexual maturity, contrary to studies elsewhere. 3. The contributions of temperature and eutrophication (total phosphorus, chlorophyll‐a concentrations) to growth, mortality and the timing and duration of developmental events were investigated by regression. 4. Water temperatures rose between 1994 and 2005 and the time when temperatures exceeded 16 °C doubled over this period. Juvenile and adult growth rates declined and the duration of the juvenile stage increased in warmer years. Eutrophication also affected these variables but, in general, to a lesser extent than temperature. 5. Year class strength (YCS) declined by a factor of 10 over the study period. YCS was independent of temperature up to 2000 °C degree days (>4 °C) but declined steeply above that point. Temperature was more important than eutrophication in predicting mortality and YCS. YCS was positively correlated with the length of time water temperature was below 7 °C, the upper temperature for Mysis breeding. 6. An established bioenergetic model predicted that water temperature and the timing of embryo release would have appreciable effects on Mysis viability. It also indicated that Mysis would lose mass at summer temperatures, consistent with the observed fat decline.  相似文献

SUMMARY.
  • 1 Biomass, production and life history of Mysis relicta were studied in the large Lake Mjøsa during the years 1976–80. Biomass fluctuations were large, but biomass averaged about 1 g wet wt m?2 or 200 ind. m?2. Cumulative net production during summer ranged from 1.6 to 2.1 g wet wt m?2. Mean population P/B-ratio was close to 2.
  • 2 Neither production or biomass of Mysis were correlated with the biomass of phytoplankton or the main Zooplankton prey species (Daphnia and Bosmina), suggesting a predominant ‘top down’ control of Mysis in this lake.
  • 3 The life cycle was well synchronized with development of food items, but predation pressure also affected life-history patterns. The proportion of juveniles apparently increased in years with strong fish predation pressure, producing a predominantly 1-year life-cycle pattern the following year.
  • 4 Mysis had a predominant 2-year life history, but a traction of the population may reproduce after 1 or 3 years. Reproduction occurred exclusively during winter. Even in such a large and stable system, where Mysis has coexisted with its main food items and predators for 8–10 000 years, a flexible life history is maintained and is probably an important buffer against year-to-year fluctuations in food and predator abundance.

Synopsis Resource partitioning was studied in two benthic Lake Michigan fishes, the deepwater sculpin,Myoxocephalus thompsoni, and the slimy sculpin,Cottus cognatus, that exhibit nearly disjunct distributions along a hypolimnetic depth gradient. Fish were collected in an area of sympatry over two 24 h periods. These sculpins exhibited food segregation—slimy sculpins ate primarilyPontoporeia affinis, deepwater sculpins ate bothP. affinis andMysis relicta — and their depth segregation was associated with the reported abundance of these prey. Different feeding behaviors may be responsible for this association, since slimy sculpins consumed intermediate size ranges ofPontoporeia and deepwater sculpins consumedPontoporeia in a pattern similar to the ambient size distribution. Neither fish showed a daily activity cycle, and both appear food-limited.  相似文献
