I studied the foraging ecology of Coquerel's Coua (Coua coquereli) and Giant Coua (Coua gigas), which occur in the dry forest in west Madagascar. This kind of forest is characterised by an alternating of a dry and a rainy season. The foraging behaviour was described in several dimensions: i.e. height and proportion of perching, rate of capture (estimating the food availability), foraging techniques, substrates used, type and size of the captured prey. Their foraging behaviour was different according to the season and to the proximity of water. Habitat structure was important to take in consideration to study their foraging behaviour. They tended to use the same pattern of techniques and substrates, but differed by the proportions they used these variables and also by the possibility to climb into the dense understorey vegetation. Seasonal variation has probably an important effect on the prey availability and the nature of prey captured. The diet of both species is also discussed. I suggest that change in habitat structure and resources levels could be important to take in consideration for the conservation of these forest birds.

Habitat structure is important to consider in all ecological studies considering the relationships between animals and their environment. Habitat structure can be studied at different scales, from landscape to microhabitat. I studied here the response of two endemic terrestrial birds living in the dry forest of Madagascar. These birds belong to the genus Coua. The study is made at the microhabitat scale in a gallery forest, which has been logged selectively in order to limit the degradation of the forest. Selective logging is promoted to be respectful of the environment by allowing us to exploit the forest without destroying it and the wildlife encountered here. At the microhabitat scale, I underline that selective logging does not affect the Coquerel's coua, which can exploit new microhabitats and increase its density. On the other hand, the giant coua was affected by the restriction of optimal microhabitats for foraging. This species could be adapted to the new habitat by modifying its favourite foraging sites, but by decreasing also the population density. This species was affected by forest degradation, even considered as not destroying. At last, I considered how Coquerel's coua could be used as umbrella species for the endangered mesite.

The forests in Madagascar are threatened by logging and burning. Because of their importance for biodiversity conservation, monitoring their animal populations is also important. We worked at two stations in the western dry forest where we studied three species of terrestrial couas in several forest plots, which differed in their degradation state. Some were burnt; others were logged. By measuring vegetation characteristics and bird densities, it was possible to indicate which characteristics were important for these birds and which conservation measures would be necessary to apply for this forest.

Habitat‐related heterogeneity of striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus heterospecific foraging assemblages was examined off the coast of Spain. Video‐based focal‐follows conducted on 122 M. surmuletus assemblages (446 total individuals) revealed an array of attendant species (n = 7) with composition linked to benthic habitat complexity; bare sandy substrata were characterized by homospecific groups of M. surmuletus, while habitats with rock and vegetation attracted a variety of scrounging labrids and sparids. Although the nature of the relationship between M. surmuletus and attendants requires further exploration, the present study indicates that substratum composition can be a driving factor explaining the dynamics of this heterospecific assemblage.

We studied the wing morphology, echolocation calls, foraging behaviour and flight speed of Tylonycteris pachypus and Tylonycteris robustula in Longzhou County, South China during the summer (June–August) of 2005. The wingspan, wing loading and aspect ratio of the two species were relatively low, and those of T. pachypus were lower compared with T. robustula . The echolocation calls of T. pachypus and T. robustula consist of a broadband frequency modulated (FM) sweep followed by a short narrowband FM sweep. The dominant frequency of calls of T. pachypus was 65.1 kHz, whereas that of T. robustula was 57.7 kHz. The call frequencies (including highest frequency of the call, lowest frequency of the call and frequency of the call that contained most energy) of T. pachypus were higher than those of T. robustula , and the pulse duration of the former was longer than that of the latter. The inter-pulse interval and bandwidth of the calls were not significantly different between the two species. Tylonycteris pachypus foraged in more complex environments than T. robustula , although the two species were both netted in edge habitats (around trees or houses), along pathways and in the tops of trees. Tylonycteris pachypus flew slower (straight level flight speed, 4.3 m s−1 ) than T. robustula (straight level flight speed, 4.8 m s−1 ). We discuss the relationship between wing morphology, echolocation calls, foraging behaviour and flight speed, and demonstrate resource partitioning between these two species in terms of morphological and behavioural factors.

ABSTRACT.
- 1 Using pinned freshly killed wasps (yellowjackets) to simulate feeding animals, it was found that V. germanica was socially facilitated, and concentrated its foraging activity on those feeders with the most pinned wasps (twenty). V. maculifrons foragers responded inversely, preferentially foraging at feeders with few or no pinned wasps.
- 2 Using hand-painted drawing pins (thumb tacks) as wasp models, similar results were found, indicating that visual, rather than olfactory, cues were responsible for the observed distribution.
- 3 Vespula maculifrons and V. germanica exhibit aggression while foraging at honey-baited feeders. Both species attack conspecifics at frequencies lower than would be expected under random encounter.

Summary This paper reports on possible effects of selective logging on vegetation structure and its consequences for two tenrec species
in a dry forest in western Madagascar. On a small scale semi-mechanized logging of less than 10 m3 per ha alters forest structure significantly. However on a large scale most of these changes are smaller than the variation
of forest structure due to natural causes. The most profound ecological effect of logging is a reduction in the number of
woody species in the regenerating cohort of trees. Potential longterm consequences of this feature are discussed. Microhabitat
variables influencing the habitat utilization of two tenrec species,Echinops telfairi andTenrec ecaudatus, were identified in an area of unlogged forest. The conclusions derived from this analysis were then tested in other parts
of the forest which had been modified by selective logging. Logging of the extent described above slightly impairs habitats
forE. telfairi but has no effect onT. ecaudatus. Though the latter species is hunted extensively in the logged areas, loggingper se does not threaten the survival of either species.

This study compares the habitat use by three species of couas, the Crested Coua Coua cristata , Coquerel's Coua C. coquereli and the Red-capped Coua C. rujiceps , in a dry forest at Ampijoroa, western Madagascar. The Crested Coua used higher layers (> 5 m) exclusively. Both Coquerel's and the Red-capped Coua stayed mainly on the ground, but the former used middle layers (1–5 m) for inactive behaviour (including resting, preening and basking) and whistling more frequently than did the Red-capped Coua. Both Coquerel's and the Red-capped Coua foraged almost exclusively on the ground but differed slightly in feeding technique. The Red-capped Coua took food on trails, relatively open areas in the forest, more frequently and more efficiently than Coquerel's Coua.

Effects of pasture and forest microclimatic conditions on the foraging activity of leaf-cutting ants
The fragmentation and transformation of land cover modify the microclimate of ecosystems. These changes have the potential to modify the foraging activity of animals, but few studies have examined this topic. In this study, we investigated whether and how the foraging activity of the leaf-cutter ant Atta cephalotes is modified by microclimatic variations due to land cover change from forest to pasture. We characterized the microclimate of each habitat and identified alterations in foraging behavior in response to relative humidity (RH), air temperature, and surface temperature along ant foraging trails by synchronously assessing foraging activity (number of ants per 5 min including incoming laden and unladen and outgoing ants) and microclimatic variables (air temperature, RH, and maximum and minimum surface temperature along the foraging trail). There were climatic differences between habitats during the day but not throughout the night, and A. cephalotes was found to have a high tolerance for foraging under severe microclimatic changes. This species can forage at surface temperatures between 17 and 45°C, air temperatures between 20 and 36°C, and an RH between 40% and 100%. We found a positive effect of temperature on the foraging activity of A. cephalotes in the pasture, where the species displayed thermophilic behavior and the ability to forage across a wide range of temperatures and RH. These results provide a mechanism to partially explain why A. cephalotes becomes highly prolific as anthropogenic disturbances increase and why it has turned into a key player of human-modified neotropical landscapes.

Prey choice by fish is subject to many constraints, some of which may interact to determine the relative preference of fish for prey with different profitabilities. The constraining effects of parasitism and perceived competition on foraging behaviour were examined in the upland bully, Gobiomorphus breviceps . In the laboratory, bullies faced with a choice of prey items of two different sizes chose the larger prey significantly more often than the smaller ones. The presence of a conspecific fish near the source of large prey significantly reduced the bullies'preference for larger prey. Neither the size of the test fish, nor the number of digenean metacercarial cysts they harboured, had any influence on their relative preference for larger prey, or on how that preference was dampened by the presence of a competitor. The threat of competition appears to be a more important constraint on prey choice in upland bullies than parasitism.

Dew and its effect on two heliophile understorey species of a tropical dry deciduous forest in Mexico

A series of horizontal and vertical measurements of dew deposition and dew duration were carried out in a tropical dry deciduous
forest in western Mexico (19° 30′ N, 105° 03′ W). The effect of dew on transpiration in heliophile species was also investigated.
The amount of dew was very variable with no temporal or spatial pattern. The amount of dew measured at two horizontal transects
(maximum and minimum) (at heights of 0.20 m and 1.30 m above ground level) was from 0.014 to 0.203 mm and from 0.013 to 0.061 mm
in the middle and at the end of the dry season, respectively. Dew deposition at different vertical levels (0.50–12.5 m height)
ranged from 0.04 to 0.36 mm. The duration of dew formation ranged between 60 and 129 min after sunrise above the canopy (a
height of 11 m), and between 259 and 290 min after sunrise at a height of 2 m. Daily transpiration rates were 883 and 632 g
m–2 d–1 in Coccoloba liebmannii and 538 and 864 g m–2 d–1 in Jacquinia pungens in January and April, respectively. Transpiration was restricted from sunrise to early afternoon in April, as a result of
the pronounced midday closure of stomata in both species. The reduction of transpiration by dew ranged from 13.2 to 50.1 g
m–2 d–1 and from 4.5 to 77.7 g m–2 d–1 for C. liebmannii and J. pungens, respectively. Dew can play an important role in enhancing the survival of heliophile species in the dry season by reducing
transpiration rates during the morning.

We monitored the productivity of the critically endangered Madagascar Fish Eagle Haliaeetus vociferoides inside and outside of the Tsimembo-Manambolomaty Protected Area (T-M PA), western Madagascar from 2010 to 2015. We recorded 14 breeding pairs inside and 13 outside T-M PA. The T-M PA and surrounding habitat hosted respectively 10 and six breeding polyandrous pairs, composed of one adult female and two adult males. During the six-year study period, 101 eggs were laid in nests in T-M PA of which 60 hatched and 58 young fledged. We recorded 62 eggs laid in nests outside the T-M PA of which 39 hatched and 36 young fledged. Productivity was similar at both sites, inside and outside T-M PA, with 0.84 (58/69) and 0.76 (36/47) fledgling per nesting attempt and 0.69 (58/84) and 0.5 (36/72) fledglings per territorial pair, respectively. Polyandrous pairs have higher productivity compared with normal pairs. Threats to Madagascar Fish Eagles and their habitat were low due to the existence of a community-based resource management system called the Local Management Secured System (GELOSE) inside and outside the T-M PA. This system is based on strengthening local traditional customs and rules, and involving local people in managing their natural resources sustainably along with biodiversity conservation.

Dung beetles (Scarabaeinae) are conspicuous components in most terrestrial ecosystems, performing important ecological functions
and services. Being sensitive to several types of disturbance, they have been successfully used as indicators of habitat change.
Dung beetle communities in tropical rainforests have been well studied, but considerably less information is available for
tropical dry forests. In this study I sampled dung beetles in two undisturbed habitats, deciduous forest and semideciduous
forest, and two disturbed habitats, secondary forest and open area habitat, in the Chamela-Cuixmala region of western Mexico.
Dung beetle species with high indicator value for each habitat were identified. Beetle abundance, observed species richness
and estimated species richness were similar in the three forest habitats, but significantly lower in the open area habitat.
A more detailed analysis of species-specific abundances in the three forest habitats revealed some differences. Transects
of one of the undisturbed habitats, the deciduous forest, were more similar to the non-adjacent transects of disturbed secondary
forest, than to the adjacent undisturbed semideciduous forest transects. Unlike studies in other tropical sites that have
found a decrease in equitability in Scarabaeinae assemblages between undisturbed forest and disturbed habitat (particularly
open habitats), in the Chamela-Cuixmala region all four habitats showed similar low equitability in community structure, with
two or three very dominant species.

Summary The island of Madagascar ranks second to the neotropics in diversity of Bignoniaceae. Tribe Coleeae (Bignoniaceae) is a monophyletic
group of tropical trees endemic to Madagascar and surrounding islands. The Masoala assemblage of Coleeae, in northeastern
Madagascar, utilizes four mechanisms for avoiding competition via niche specialization: (1) morphologically via characters
that comprise syndromes, explaining part of the pattern in this system – although the syndrome concept is not perfect; (2)
spatially via vertical stratification and potentially pollen placement; (3) temporally via phenological stagger; (4) ethologically
via flowering duration and display. The 13 sympatric species of understory treelets and canopy trees did receive low flower visitor numbers. Contrary to the prevailing view of pollination systems where generalized systems predict
equivalency between floral traits and pollinators, I found that different pollinators pollinated the 13 species of trees, that floral characters of different trees did not overlap in multidimensional phenotype space, and that few species of trees were visited by more than two pollinator groups. The use of multiple niches is potentially important in
understanding both the origin and maintenance of tropical tree diversity.

Ecological studies on seasonally dry tropical forest herpetofauna are scarce and those focused on interspecific relations of lizards in this endangered ecosystem are even fewer. This study evaluates general and seasonal patterns in time and habitat use among four lizard species (Anolis nebulosus, Sceloporus melanorhinus, S. utiformis, and Urosaurus bicarinatus) in a protected area of dry tropical forest in western Mexico. Data were gathered by visual surveys along 12 linear parallel transects located in an undisturbed habitat. Anolis nebulosus showed a bimodal pattern in daily activity whereas the other species exhibited unimodal patterns of activity. Seasonality only affected the general activity patterns of S. melanorhinus and U. bicarinatus. With the exception of A. nebulosus and S. melanorhinus, statistical differences were found for all pairwise comparisons of general and seasonal patterns of habitat use. The use of leaf‐litter and low perches in arboreal species was higher during the dry season, probably in response to higher food availability in these habitats. As expected, environmental seasonality affects both activity time and habitat use by lizards. Results suggest greater differences in habitat use than in time of activity among species. The data also indicate complementary use of time and space by these lizard species: species showing similar activity patterns exhibit greater differences in their habitat use. Predation could be an important factor affecting the use of habitat and time by the four lizard species.

A field experiment was conducted to examine the effect of perceived predation risk on the use of foraging areas by juvenile and adult primates under different conditions of local food abundance. Wild squirrel monkeys, Saimiri sciureus, were observed in an experiment conducted during the dry and the wet seasons at a site in Eastern Amazonia, Brazil. Animals were presented with feeding platforms that differed in food quantity and exposure to aerial predators through varying vegetative cover. In the dry season, juveniles and adults chose platforms based solely on food quantity. However, in the wet season, juveniles foraged preferentially on high-reward platforms only if cover level also was high (i.e., potentially offered greater concealment from predators). In contrast, adults showed the same pattern of platform use regardless of season. These results indicate that age and local resource availability based on seasonality affect whether primates forage in a predator-sensitive manner. Juveniles may be more sensitive to predation risk when foraging, and individuals may take fewer risks when resource abundance is high in their environment.
