Direct and indirect effects of warming are increasingly modifying the carbon-rich vegetation and soils of the Arctic tundra, with important implications for the terrestrial carbon cycle. Understanding the biological and environmental influences on the processes that regulate foliar carbon cycling in tundra species is essential for predicting the future terrestrial carbon balance in this region. To determine the effect of climate change impacts on gas exchange in tundra, we quantified foliar photosynthesis (Anet), respiration in the dark and light (RD and RL, determined using the Kok method), photorespiration (PR), carbon gain efficiency (CGE, the ratio of photosynthetic CO2 uptake to total CO2 exchange of photosynthesis, PR, and respiration), and leaf traits of three dominant species – Betula nana, a woody shrub; Eriophorum vaginatum, a graminoid; and Rubus chamaemorus, a forb – grown under long-term warming and fertilization treatments since 1989 at Toolik Lake, Alaska. Under warming, B. nana exhibited the highest rates of Anet and strongest light inhibition of respiration, increasing CGE nearly 50% compared with leaves grown in ambient conditions, which corresponded to a 52% increase in relative abundance. Gas exchange did not shift under fertilization in B. nana despite increases in leaf N and P and near-complete dominance at the community scale, suggesting a morphological rather than physiological response. Rubus chamaemorus, exhibited minimal shifts in foliar gas exchange, and responded similarly to B. nana under treatment conditions. By contrast, E. vaginatum, did not significantly alter its gas exchange physiology under treatments and exhibited dramatic decreases in relative cover (warming: −19.7%; fertilization: −79.7%; warming with fertilization: −91.1%). Our findings suggest a foliar physiological advantage in the woody shrub B. nana that is further mediated by warming and increased soil nutrient availability, which may facilitate shrub expansion and in turn alter the terrestrial carbon cycle in future tundra environments.  相似文献

Changes in winter precipitation that include both decreases and increases in winter snow are underway across the Arctic. In this study, we used a 14-year experiment that has increased and decreased winter snow in the moist acidic tussock tundra of northern Alaska to understand impacts of variation in winter snow depth on summer leaf-level ecophysiology of two deciduous shrubs and a graminoid species, including: instantaneous rates of leaf gas exchange, and δ13C, δ15N, and nitrogen (N) concentrations of Betula nana, Salix pulchra, and Eriophorum vaginatum. Leaf-level measurements were complemented by measurements of canopy leaf area index (LAI) and depth of thaw. Reductions in snow lowered summer leaf photosynthesis, conductance, and transpiration rates by up to 40 % compared to ambient and deep snow conditions for Eriophorum vaginatum, and reduced Salix pulchra conductance and transpiration by up to 49 %. In contrast, Betula nana exhibited no changes in leaf gas exchange in response to lower or deeper snow. Canopy LAI increased with added snow, while reduced winter snow resulted in lower growing season soil temperatures and reduced thaw depths. Our findings indicate that the spatial and temporal variability of future snow depth will have individualistic consequences for leaf-level C fixation and water flux by tundra species, and that these responses will be manifested over the longer term by changes in canopy traits, depth of thaw, soil C and N processes, and trace gas (CO2 and H2O) exchanges between the tundra and the atmosphere.  相似文献

In this study, we examined steady-state and dynamic photosynthetic performance and leaf nitrogen (N) partitioning in the typical shade-demanding herb Panax notoginseng grown along a light gradient. Gas exchange on a leaf area basis was significantly reduced under low irradiance, with gas exchange on a leaf mass basis reaching a maximum value and then decreasing along the light gradient. Specific leaf area significantly increased with decreasing irradiance levels (P < 0.001), whereas carboxylation efficiency was decreased (P < 0.001). In addition, decreasing growth irradiance levels led to declines in maximum carboxylation rate (V cmax) and maximum electron transport rate (J max), although V cmax/mass and J max/mass were relatively less affected than V cmax/area and J max/area. Slow photosynthetic response to simulated sunflecks was observed under low levels of growth irradiance, with stomatal limitations only detected in leaves grown under low-light conditions. Chlorophyll content increased significantly with decreasing irradiance levels. N content on a leaf mass basis apparently increased, while N content on a leaf area basis markedly decreased. The fraction of leaf N allocated to light-harvesting components increased significantly with decreasing growth irradiance levels, whereas the fraction allocated to carboxylation and bioenergetics was significantly reduced. As an adaptation strategy to growth irradiance, we conclude that adjustments in specific leaf area may be more important than changes in leaf physiology and biochemistry in typical shade-demanding species such as P. notoginseng.  相似文献

Ecotypic differentiation in the tussock‐forming sedge Eriophorum vaginatum has led to the development of populations that are locally adapted to climate in Alaska's moist tussock tundra. As a foundation species, E. vaginatum plays a central role in providing topographic and microclimatic variation essential to these ecosystems, but a changing climate could diminish the importance of this species. As Arctic temperatures have increased, there is evidence of adaptational lag in E. vaginatum, as locally adapted ecotypes now exhibit reduced population growth rates. Whether there is a physiological underpinning to adaptational lag is unknown. Accordingly, this possibility was investigated in reciprocal transplant gardens. Tussocks of E. vaginatum from sites separated by ~1° latitude (Coldfoot: 67°15′N, Toolik Lake: 68°37′, Sagwon: 69°25′) were transplanted into the Toolik Lake and Sagwon sites and exposed to either an ambient or an experimental warming treatment. Five tussocks pertreatment combination were measured at each garden to determine photosynthetic capacity (i.e., Vcmax and Jmax) and dark respiration rate (Rd) at measurement temperatures of 15, 20, and 25°C. Photosynthetic enhancements or homeostasis were observed for all ecotypes at both gardens under increased growth temperature, indicating no negative effect of elevated temperature on photosynthetic capacity. Further, no evidence of thermal acclimation in Rd was observed for any ecotype, and there was little evidence of ecotypic variation in Rd. As such, no physiological contribution to adaptational lag was observed given the increase in growth temperature (up to ~2°C) provided by this study. Despite neutral to positive effects of increased growth temperature on photosynthesis in E. vaginatum, it appears to confer no lasting advantage to the species.  相似文献

Eriophorum vaginatum is a characteristic species of northern peatlands and a keystone plant for cutover bog restoration. Understanding the factors affecting E. vaginatum seedling establishment (i.e. growth dynamics and allocation) under global change has practical implications for the management of abandoned mined bogs and restoration of their C-sequestration function. We studied the responses of leaf dynamics, above- and belowground biomass production of establishing seedlings to elevated CO2 and N. We hypothesised that nutrient factors such as limitation shifts or dilutions would modulate growth stimulation. Elevated CO2 did not affect biomass, but increased the number of young leaves in spring (+400 %), and the plant vitality (i.e. number of green leaves/total number of leaves) (+3 %), both of which were negatively correlated to [K+] in surface porewater, suggesting a K-limited production of young leaves. Nutrient ratios in green leaves indicated either N and K co-limitation or K limitation. N addition enhanced the number of tillers (+38 %), green leaves (+18 %), aboveground and belowground biomass (+99, +61 %), leaf mass-to-length ratio (+28 %), and reduced the leaf turnover (?32 %). N addition enhanced N availability and decreased [K+] in spring surface porewater. Increased tiller and leaf production in July were associated with a doubling in [K+] in surface porewater suggesting that under enhanced N production is K driven. Both experiments illustrate the importance of tradeoffs in E. vaginatum growth between: (1) producing tillers and generating new leaves, (2) maintaining adult leaves and initiating new ones, and (3) investing in basal parts (corms) for storage or in root growth for greater K uptake. The K concentration in surface porewater is thus the single most important factor controlling the growth of E. vaginatum seedlings in the regeneration of selected cutover bogs.  相似文献

Foliar nitrogen isotope (δ15N) composition patterns have been linked to soil N, mycorrhizal fractionation, and within-plant fractionations. However, few studies have examined the potential importance of the direct foliar uptake of gaseous reactive N on foliar δ15N. Using an experimental set-up in which the rate of mycorrhizal infection was reduced using a fungicide, we examined the influence of mycorrhizae on foliar δ15N in potted red maple (Acer rubrum) seedlings along a regional N deposition gradient in New York State. Mycorrhizal associations altered foliar δ15N values in red maple seedlings from 0.06 to 0.74 ‰ across sites. At the same sites, we explored the predictive roles of direct foliar N uptake, soil δ15N, and mycorrhizae on foliar δ15N in adult stands of A. rubrum, American beech (Fagus grandifolia), black birch (Betula lenta), and red oak (Quercus rubra). Multiple regression analysis indicated that ambient atmospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentration explained 0, 69, 23, and 45 % of the variation in foliar δ15N in American beech, red maple, red oak, and black birch, respectively, after accounting for the influence of soil δ15N. There was no correlation between foliar δ13C and foliar %N with increasing atmospheric NO2 concentration in most species. Our findings suggest that total canopy uptake, and likely direct foliar N uptake, of pollution-derived atmospheric N deposition may significantly impact foliar δ15N in several dominant species occurring in temperate forest ecosystems.  相似文献

The carbon balance of Arctic ecosystems is particularly sensitive to global environmental change. Leaf respiration (R), a temperature‐dependent key process in determining the carbon balance, is not well‐understood in Arctic plants. The potential for plants to acclimate to warmer conditions could strongly impact future global carbon balance. Two key unanswered questions are (1) whether short‐term temperature responses can predict long‐term respiratory responses to growth in elevated temperatures and (2) to what extent the constant daylight conditions of the Arctic growing season inhibit leaf respiration. In two dominant Arctic species E riophorum vaginatum (tussock grass) and B etula nana (woody shrub), we assessed the extent of respiratory inhibition in the light (R L/R D), respiratory response to short‐term temperature change, and respiratory acclimation to long‐term warming treatments. We found that R of both species is strongly inhibited by light (averaging 35% across all measurement temperatures). In E . vaginatum both R L and R D acclimated to the long‐term warming treatment, reducing the magnitude of respiratory response relative to the short‐term response to temperature increase. In B . nana, both R L and R D responded to short‐term temperature increase but showed no acclimation to the long‐term warming. The ability to predict plant respiratory response to global warming with short‐term temperature responses will depend on species‐specific acclimation potential and the differential response of R L and R D to temperature. With projected woody shrub encroachment in Arctic tundra and continued warming, changing species dominance between these two functional groups, may impact ecosystem respiratory response and carbon balance.  相似文献

Background

Although plant growth in alpine steppes on the Tibetan Plateau has been suggested to be sensitive to nitrogen (N) addition, the N limitation conditions of alpine steppes remain uncertain.

Methods

After 2 years of fertilization with NH4NO3 at six rates (0, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 160 kg N ha?1 yr?1), the responses of plant and soil parameters as well as N2O fluxes were measured.

Results

At the vegetation level, N addition resulted in an increase in the aboveground N pool from 0.5?±?0.1 g m?2 in the control plots to 1.9?±?0.2 g m?2 in the plots at the highest N input rate. The aboveground C pool, biomass N concentration, foliar δ15N, soil NO3 ?-N and N2O flux were also increased by N addition. However, as the N fertilization rate increased from 10 kg N ha?1 yr?1 to 160 kg N ha?1 yr?1, the N-use efficiency decreased from 12.3?±?4.6 kg C kg N?1 to 1.6?±?0.2 kg C kg N?1, and the N-uptake efficiency decreased from 43.2?±?9.7 % to 9.1?±?1.1 %. Biomass N:P ratios increased from 14.4?±?2.6 in the control plots to 20.5?±?0.8 in the plots with the highest N input rate. Biomass N:P ratios, N-uptake efficiency and N-use efficiency flattened out at 40 kg N ha?1 yr?1. Above this level, soil NO3 ?-N began to accumulate. The seasonal average N2O flux of growing season nonlinearly increased with increased N fertilization rate and linearly increased with the weighted average foliar δ15N. At the species level, N uptake responses to relative N availability were species-specific. Biomass N concentration of seven out of the eight non-legume species increased significantly with N fertilization rates, while Kobresia macrantha and the one legume species (Oxytropics glacialis) remained stable. Both the non-legume and the legume species showed significant 15N enrichment with increasing N fertilization rate. All non-legume species showed significant increased N:P ratios with increased N fertilization rate, but not the legume species.

Conclusions

Our findings suggest that the Tibetan alpine steppes might be N-saturated above a critical N load of 40 kg N ha?1 yr?1. For the entire Tibetan Plateau (ca. 2.57 million km2), a low N deposition rate (10 kg N ha?1 yr?1) could enhance plant growth, and stimulate aboveground N and C storage by at least 1.1?±?0.3 Tg N yr?1 and 31.5?±?11.8 Tg C yr?1, respectively. The non-legume species was N-limited, but the legume species was not limited by N.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to investigate whether increased nitrogen use efficiency found in Populus nigra L. (Jean Pourtet) under elevated CO2 would correlate with changes in the production of carbon-based secondary compounds (CBSCs). Using Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) technology, a poplar plantation was exposed to either ambient (about 370 μmol mol−1 CO2) or elevated (about 550 μmol mol−1 CO2) [CO2] for 5 years. After three growing seasons, the plantation was coppiced and half of the experimental plots were fertilized with nitrogen. CBSCs, total nitrogen and lignin-bound nitrogen were quantified in secondary sprouts in seasons of active growth and dormancy during 2 years after coppicing. Neither elevated CO2 nor nitrogen fertilisation alone or in combination influenced lignin concentrations in wood. Soluble phenolics and soluble proteins in wood decreased slightly in response to elevated CO2. Higher nitrogen supply stimulated formation of CBSCs and increased protein concentrations. Lignin-bound nitrogen in wood ranged from 0.37–1.01 mg N g−1 dry mass accounting for 17–26% of total nitrogen in wood, thus, forming a sizeable nitrogen fraction resistant to chemical degradation. The concentration of this nitrogen fraction was significantly decreased by elevated CO2, increased in response to nitrogen fertilisation and showed a significant CO2 × fertilisation interaction. Seasonal changes markedly affected the internal nitrogen pools. Soluble proteins in wood were 52–143% higher in the dormant than in the growth season. Positive correlations existed between the biosynthesis of proteins and CBSCs. The limited responses to elevated CO2 and nitrogen fertilisation indicate that growth and defence are well orchestrated in P. nigra and that changes in the balance of both resources—nitrogen and C—have only marginal effects on wood chemistry. Soil nitrogen (N) supply and uptake by regenerating trees is an important ecosystem attribute but difficult to quantify in partial-cut forests where light availability varies. The foliar attributes of N concentration (N%) and N per unit area (Na) may help characterize the influence of soil nutrition, but ideally the relationship between soils and foliage would be tested separately by species across well-defined light gradients. To do this, we examined foliar attributes of four tree species across gradients of light availability in 12 year-old partially-cut forests in northwest British Columbia, Canada. There were no differences in forest floor or mineral soil N mineralization rates across the light gradients, and for western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) and hybrid white spruce (Picea glauca x sitchensis), this consistent level of soil N supply corresponded with unchanging foliar N%. In contrast, foliar N% of Betula papyrifera (paper birch) and Thuja plicata (western redcedar) declined with shading, perhaps due to shifts in root-shoot biomass allocation for B. papyrifera, and climatic constraints on shade tolerance for T. plicata. Leaf δ13C approached an asymptote at approx. 40% full light for the coniferous species, but increased linearly with light for B. papyrifera. Foliar Na was linearly correlated with leaf δ13C for three species, reflecting the dual effect of light and nutrition on photosynthesis processes, and suggesting that foliar Na may be a simple parameter to integrate both resource constraints on regenerating saplings. These results demonstrate both support for and limits to foliar attributes among species in isolating soil N effects against light constraints in partial-cut forests.  相似文献

The black locust is adapted to elevated [CO 2 ] through changes in nitrogen allocation characteristics in leaves.

Abstract

The black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is an invasive woody legume within Japan. This prolific species has a high photosynthetic rate and growth rate, and undergoes symbiosis with N2-fixing micro-organisms. To determine the effect of elevated CO2 concentration [CO2] on its photosynthetic characteristics, we studied the chlorophyll (Chl) and leaf nitrogen (N) content, and the leaf structure and N allocation patterns in the leaves and acetylene reduction activity after four growing seasons, in R. pseudoacacia. Our specimens were grown at ambient [CO2] (370 μmol mol?1) and at elevated [CO2] (500 μmol mol?1), using a free air CO2 enrichment (FACE) system. Net photosynthetic rate at growth [CO2] (A growth) and acetylene reduction activity were significantly higher, but maximum carboxylation rate of RuBisCo (V cmax), maximum rate of electron transport driving RUBP regeneration (J max), net photosynthetic rate under enhanced CO2 concentration and light saturation (A max), the N concentration in leaf, and in leaf mass per unit area (LMA) and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase (RuBisCo) content were significantly lower grown at elevated [CO2] than at ambient [CO2]. We also found that RuBisCo/N were less at elevated [CO2], whereas Chl/N increased significantly. Allocation characteristics from N in leaves to photosynthetic proteins, NL (Light-harvesting complex: LHC, photosystem I and II: PSI and PSII) and other proteins also changed. When R. pseudoacacia was grown at elevated [CO2], the N allocation to RuBisCo (NR) decreased to a greater extent but NL and N remaining increased relative to specimens grown at ambient [CO2]. We suggest that N remobilization from RuBisCo is more efficient than from proteins of electron transport (NE), and from NL. These physiological responses of the black locust are significant as being an adaptation strategy to global environmental changes.

We constructed nitrogen (N) budgets for the lawns of three simulated residences built to test the environmental impacts of three different residential landscape designs in southern California. The three designs included: a “Typical” lawn planted with cool season tall fescue (Schedonorus phoenix), fertilized at the recommended rate for this species (192 kg?1 ha?1 year?1) and irrigated with an automatic timer; a design intended to lower N and water requirements (“Low Input”) with the warm season seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum) fertilized at 123 kg?1 ha?1 year?1 and irrigated with a soil moisture-based system; and a design incorporating local best practices (“Low Impact” lawn) that included the native sedge species Carex, fertilized at 48 kg?1 ha?1 year?1 and irrigated by a weather station-based system. Plant N uptake accounted for 33.2 ± 0.5 (tall fescue), 53.7 ± 0.7 (seashore paspalum), and 12.2 ± 1.3 % (Carex) of annual N inputs, while estimated N retention in soil was relatively large and similar in the three lawns (41–46 %). At lower N and water inputs than Typical, Low Input showed the highest annual clipping yield and N uptake, although it also had higher denitrification rates. Leaching inorganic N losses remained low even from the Typical lawn (2 %), while gaseous N losses were highly variable. The Low Input lawn was most efficient in retaining N with relatively low water and N costs, although its fertilization rates could be further reduced to lower gaseous N losses. Our results suggest that the choice of a warm-season, C4 turf species with reduced rates of irrigation and fertilization is effective in this semi-arid region to maintain high productivity and N retention in plants and soils at low N and water inputs.  相似文献

In the foothills of the Brooks Range, Alaska, different glaciation histories have created landscapes with varying soil age. Productivity of most of these landscapes is generally N limited, but varies widely, as do plant species composition and soil properties (e.g., pH). We hypothesized that the projected changes in productivity and vegetation composition under a warmer climate might be mediated through differential changes in N availability across soil age. We compared readily available [water-soluble NH4 +, NO3 ?, and amino acids (AA)], moderately available (soluble proteins), hydrolyzable, and total N pools across three tussock-tundra landscapes with soil ages ranging from 11.5k to 300k years. The effects of fertilization and warming on these N pools were also compared for the two younger sites. Readily available N was highest at the oldest site, and AA accounted for 80–89 % of this N. At the youngest site, inorganic N constituted the majority (80–97 %) of total readily available N. This variation reflected the large differences in plant functional group composition and soil chemical properties. Long-term (8–16 years) fertilization increased the soluble inorganic N by 20- to 100-fold at the intermediate-age site, but only by twofold to threefold at the youngest site. Warming caused small and inconsistent changes in the soil C:N ratio and AA, but only in soils beneath Eriophorum vaginatum, the dominant tussock-forming sedge. These differential responses suggest that the ecological consequences of warmer climates on these tundra ecosystems are more complex than simply elevated N-mineralization rates, and that the responses of landscapes might be impacted by soil age, or time since deglaciation.  相似文献

Ozone (O3) pollution and the availability of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in the soil both affect plant photosynthesis and chlorophyll (Chl) content, but the interaction of O3 and nutrition is unclear. We postulated that the nutritional condition changes plant photosynthetic responses to O3. An O3-sensitive poplar clone (Oxford) was subject to two N levels (N0, 0 kg N ha??1; N80, 80 kg N ha??1), two P levels (P0, 0 kg P ha??1; P80, 80 kg P ha??1) and three levels of O3 exposure (ambient concentration, AA; 1.5?×?AA; 2.0?×?AA) over a growing season in an O3 free air controlled exposure (FACE) facility. The daily change of leaf gas exchange and dark respiration (Rd) were investigated at mid-summer (August). Chl a fluorescence was measured three times in July, August and September. At the end of the growing season, Chl content was measured. It was found that Chl content, the maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm), Chl a fluorescence performance index (PI) and gas exchange were negatively affected by elevated O3. Phosphorus may mitigate the O3-induced reduction of the ratio of photosynthesis to stomatal conductance, while it exacerbated the O3-induced loss of Fv/Fm. Nitrogen alleviated negative effects of O3 on Fv/Fm and PI in July. Ozone-induced loss of net photosynthetic rate was mitigated by N in medium O3 exposure (1.5?×?AA). However, such a mitigation effect was not observed in the higher O3 level (2.0?×?AA). Nitrogen addition exacerbated O3-induced increase of Rd suggesting an increased respiratory carbon loss in the presence of O3 and N. This may result in a further reduction of the net carbon gain for poplars exposed to O3.  相似文献

The altitude-related responses to the increased application of CO2, N, and their combination were investigated in two Abies faxoniana populations, which originated from a subalpine coniferous forest at elevations of 2,580 and 3,200 m using closed-top chambers. The two contrasting populations were subjected to two CO2 regimes (350 and 700 µmol mol?1) and two N levels (0 and 5 g N m?2 year?1). Their net photosynthetic rate, non-structural carbohydrate concentration, and photosynthetic N use efficiency (PNUE) increased under elevated CO2. However, the increases detected in the high-elevation (HE) population were significantly greater than those found in the low-elevation (LE) population. Under elevated CO2 and N application, the maximal carboxylation rate (V cmax) increased in HE population, whereas no effects were found on V cmax in LE population. The C to N ratio decreased under N application in both populations. N application also induced the HE population to show greater increases in free amino acids, soluble proteins, N concentration, and PNUE than LE population. These results suggested that the population from HE was more sensitive to elevated CO2 and (or) N application than LE population. Results of this study provided valuable knowledge for predicting forest development under increased atmospheric CO2 concentration and (or) N deposition.  相似文献

We tested whether cheap and quick chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence can be used in ecophysiological field studies as proxies for gas-exchange measurements. We measured net photosynthetic rate at saturating irradiance and ambient atmospheric CO2 concentrations (PNsat), maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax), maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm), the performance index (PIabs), leaf nitrogen (Narea), and carbon isotope discrimination (Δ13C) within four herbaceous species along two elevational gradients. We analysed the relationship between Chl fluorescence and gas-exchange parameters and their link to indirect assessment of plant performance via ecophysiological traits. Fv/Fm showed no relationship to PNsat and only weak relationships to Vcmax. PIabs was positively related to PNsat and Vcmax. PIabs, PNsat, and Vcmax were positively associated with Narea and negatively to Δ13C, whereas Fv/Fm showed no relationship to Narea and a positive to Δ13C. Thus, PIabs might be suitable to characterize the photosynthetic activity when aiming on large numbers of samples.  相似文献

Salinity is a widespread adverse environmental problem globally, and significantly limits crop production. In this study, the possibility of enhancing salinity stress tolerance of Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris L. var. cicla) by 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) foliar application was investigated. The Swiss chard plants were grown in hydroponic culture. Twelve-week-old uniform seedlings were treated by 0 and 40 mM saline regimes generated by the mixture of sodium chloride and sodium sulfate (molar ratio NaCl:Na2SO4 = 9:1), and were foliar-sprayed with 0 and 60 μM L?1 ALA (every 3 days) for 6 days; then the plants were treated for another 7 days (every 3 day) with increased concentration of salinity and ALA, 80 mM and 120 μM L?1. Salinity without ALA application significantly decreased plant growth [43 % in shoot dry weight (DW), 21 % in root DW, 24 % in relative growth rate (RGR), 43 % in leaf area (LA)], water uptake [20.8 % in relative water content (RWC), 47.9 % in osmotic potential (OP)], chlorophyll (Chl) a content (10 %), Pn (36 %), Gs (72 %) and Tr (59 %) compared with those in control plants; however, under saline conditions, ALA foliar application improved plant growth (49.7 % in shoot DW, 27 % in root DW, 42.3 % in RGR, 72.1 % in LA) and increased RWC (12 %), Chl a content (10 %) and photosynthetic parameters (27 % in Pn, 28 % in Gs, 14 % in Tr) compared with those in untreated plants. Salinity significantly increased Na+ content, resulting in the reduction of Mg2+ and K+ contents. ALA foliar application alleviated ionic toxicity through the reduction of Na+ content and Na+/K+ ratio. On the other hand, it increased total nitrogen and glycine betaine (GB) content. ALA foliar application slightly reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) content, indicating that ALA has the potential to alleviate oxidative stress in salinity-stressed Swiss chard.  相似文献

Wet N deposition comprises oxidised (nitrate) and reduced (ammonium) N forms in proportions that vary spatially with source and topography. Field evidence of long-term N form effects on semi-natural ecosystems and how these are modified by phosphorus and potassium availability are lacking. This study describes cover changes for some key peatland species and litter chemistry from Sphagnum capillifolium, Calluna and Eriophorum vaginatum, and peat in response to 9 years of N treatment. Ammonium and nitrate as NH4Cl or NaNO3 were provided to replicate plots in rainwater spray at +8 (low) or +56 (high) kg N ha?1 year, with and without PK via an automated system coupled to site meteorological conditions. Reduced N caused greater N accumulation in all key species than oxidised N, especially at higher doses, but cover declined more, though not significantly so, with oxidised than reduced N at the high N dose. Overall the detrimental effects of high N on Sphagnum and Calluna cover were significant but small. By comparison PK inclusion with 56 kg N ha?1 year as oxidised N, not reduced N, had devastating effects on cover, causing both S. capillifolium and Calluna to decrease 3–5-fold, facilitating invasion and expansion of nitrophiles, non-characteristic bog plants e.g. Epilobium angustifolium, Epilobium palustre, Juncus effusus, Digitalis purpurea and Dryopteris dilatata. N form appears to be significant for peatlands because of its effects on pH. The significance of changes in plant cover for peat chemistry and decomposition for biogeochemistry is discussed.  相似文献

Background and aims

Below-ground grass competition limits woody establishment in savannas. N2-fixing legumes may, however, have a nutritional advantage over broad-leaved species. We hypothesised that broad-leaved non-legume savanna thicket species would be more severely constrained by grass competition for N and consequently respond more to N-fertilization than the legume, Acacia karroo.

Methods

A. karroo and five non-legume thicket species (Maytenus senegalensis, M. heterophylla, Euclea divinorum, Ziziphus mucronata, Schotia brachypetala) were grown together in an irrigated competition experiment with clipped-, unclipped-grass and without grass with/without N-fertilizer. The biomass, foliar nutrient, δ13C and δ15N of grasses and woody species were determined.

Results

Growth of both A. karroo and the non-legume species was equally sensitive (c. 90 % reduction) to both clipped- and unclipped-grass competition, regardless of N-fertilization. With grass competition, however, foliar [N] increased and δ15N decreased in response to N-fertilization. Grass biomass accumulation was also unchanged by fertilisation, despite increases in foliar [N] and decreases in δ15N.

Conclusions

The N2-fixation capacity of A. karroo provided no growth advantage over non-legumes. The lack of responsiveness of biomass accumulation by both the woody species and the grasses to N-fertilization, despite evidence that plants accessed the N-fertilizer, indicates limitation by other nutrients.  相似文献

Outbreaks of Dendroctonus beetles are causing extensive mortality in conifer forests throughout North America. However, nitrogen (N) cycling impacts among forest types are not well known. We quantified beetle-induced changes in forest structure, soil temperature, and N cycling in Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) forests of Greater Yellowstone (WY, USA), and compared them to published lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) data. Five undisturbed stands were compared to five beetle-killed stands (4–5 years post-outbreak). We hypothesized greater N cycling responses in Douglas-fir due to higher overall N stocks. Undisturbed Douglas-fir stands had greater litter N pools, soil N, and net N mineralization than lodgepole pine. Several responses to disturbance were similar between forest types, including a pulse of N-enriched litter, doubling of soil N availability, 30–50 % increase in understory cover, and 20 % increase in foliar N concentration of unattacked trees. However, the response of some ecosystem properties notably varied by host forest type. Soil temperature was unaffected in Douglas-fir, but lowered in lodgepole pine. Fresh foliar %N was uncorrelated with net N mineralization in Douglas-fir, but positively correlated in lodgepole pine. Though soil ammonium and nitrate, net N mineralization, and net nitrification all doubled, they remained low in both forest types (<6 μg N g soil?1 NH4 +or NO3 ?; <25 μg N g soil?1 year?1 net N mineralization; <8 μg N g soil?1 year?1 net nitrification). Results suggest that beetle disturbance affected litter and soil N cycling similarly in each forest type, despite substantial differences in pre-disturbance biogeochemistry. In contrast, soil temperature and soil N–foliar N linkages differed between host forest types. This result suggests that disturbance type may be a better predictor of litter and soil N responses than forest type due to similar disturbance mechanisms and disturbance legacies across both host–beetle systems.  相似文献
