In this paper I explore the psychology of ritual performance and present a simple graphical model that clarifies several issues in William Irons’s theory of religion as a “hard-to-fake” sign of commitment. Irons posits that religious behaviors or rituals serve as costly signals of an individual’s commitment to a religious group. Increased commitment among members of a religious group may facilitate intra-group cooperation, which is argued to be the primary adaptive benefit of religion. Here I propose a proximate explanation for how individuals are able to pay the short-term costs of ritual performance to achieve the long-term fitness benefits offered by religious groups. The model addresses three significant problems raised by Irons’s theory. First, the model explains why potential free-riders do not join religious groups even when there are significant net benefits that members of religious groups can achieve. Second, the model clarifies how costly a ritual must be to achieve stability and prevent potential free-riders from joining the religious group. Third, the model suggests why religious groups may require adherents to perform private rituals that are not observed by others. Several hypotheses generated from the model are also discussed. β-lactoglobulin (LG) contains nine β-strands (strands A-I) and one α-helix. Strands A-H form a β-barrel. At neutral pH, equine LG (ELG) is monomeric, whereas bovine LG (BLG) is dimeric, and the I-strands of its two subunits form an intermolecular β-sheet. We previously constructed a chimeric ELG in which the sequence of the I-strand was replaced with that of BLG. This chimera did not dimerize. For this study, we constructed the new chimera we call Gyuba (which means cow and horse in Japanese). The amino acid sequence of Gyuba includes the sequences of the BLG secondary structures and those of the ELG loops. The crystal structure of Gyuba is very similar to that of BLG and indicates that Gyuba dimerizes via the intermolecular β-sheet formed by the two I-strands. Thus, the entire arrangement of the secondary structural elements is important for LG dimer formation.  相似文献

Like Laland et al., I think Mayr’s distinction is problematic, but I identify a further problem with it. I argue that Mayr’s distinction is a false dichotomy, and obscures an important question about evolutionary change. I show how this question, once revealed, sheds light on some debates in evo-devo that Laland et al.’s analysis cannot, and suggest that it provides a different view about how future integration between biological disciplines might proceed.  相似文献

As Aurora kinases are overexpressed in a large number of cancers, and ectopic expression of Aurora generates polyploid cells containing multiple centrosomes, it has been tempting to suggest that Aurora overexpression provokes genetic instability underlying the tumorigenesis. However, examination of the evidence suggests a more complex relationship. Overexpression of Aurora-A readily transforms rat-1 and NIH3T3 cells, but not primary cells, whereas overexpression of Aurora-B induces metastasis after implantation of tumors in nude mice. Why do polyploid cells containing abnormal centrosome numbers induced by Aurora not get eliminated at cell-cycle checkpoints? Does this phenotype determine the origin of cancer or does it only promote tumor progression? Would drugs against Aurora family members be of any help for cancer treatment? Recent literature criticized the use of the symbol “x” to denote basic chromosome number in cytotaxonomy. I show here that this criticism is superfluous and is based on historical confusion between the concepts of basic chromosome number (or monoploid chromosome number), which is objective, and ancestral basic chromosome number, which is always inferred, by means of several – more or less reliable – methods. The most relevant literature is discussed and, in the end, I propose the use of x for basic chromosome number and p for (hypothetical) ancestral basic chromosome number.  相似文献

Until recently, patterns of species richness and endemism were based on an intuitive interpretation of distribution maps with very limited numerical analyses. Such maps based solely on taxonomic collections tend to concentrate on collecting efforts more than biodiversity hotspots, since often the highest diversity is found in well-collected areas. During the last decades, there has been an overwhelming concern about the loss of tropical forest biological diversity, and an emphasis on the identification of biodiversity hotspots in an attempt to optimise conservation strategies. Furthermore, the concept of sites of high diversity, or hotspots, has attracted the attention of conservationists as a tool for conservation priority settings. With the development of GIS tools, geostatistics, phytosociological and multivariate analysis software packages, more rigorous numerical analyses of distributional and inventory data can be used for assessing conservation priorities. In the Campo-Ma’an rain forest, inventory data from 147 plots of 0.1 ha each and 7137 taxonomic collections were used to examine the distribution and convergence patterns of strict and narrow endemic species. We analysed the trends in endemic and rare species recorded, using quantitative conservation indices such as Genetic Heat Index (GHI) and Pioneer Index (PI), together with geostatistic techniques that help to evaluate and identify potential areas of high conservation priority. The results showed that the Campo-Ma’an area is characterised by a rich and diverse flora with 114 endemic plant species, of which 29 are restricted to the area, 29 also occur in southwestern Cameroon, and 56 others that are also found in other parts of Cameroon. Although most of the forest types rich in strict and narrow endemic species occur in the National Park, there are other biodiversity hotspots in the coastal zone and in areas such as Mont d’Eléphant and Massif des Mamelles that are located outside the National Park. Unfortunately, these areas, supporting 17 strict endemic species that are not found in the park, are under serious threat and do not have any conservation status for the moment. Taking into consideration that with the growing human population density, pressure on these hotspots will increase in the near future, it is suggested that priority be given to the conservation of these areas and that a separate management strategy be developed to ensure their protection.  相似文献

Multiple papers have been published that have identified and/or characterized the cytoprotective function of autophagy, primarily in tumor cells exposed to chemotherapy or radiation. These studies have relied on pharmacological and/or genetic interference with autophagy to establish its protective function, often primarily by demonstrating that cells in which autophagy has been suppressed undergo increased apoptosis. The purpose of this Editor’s Corner is to emphasize that these approaches, while absolutely necessary, are of themselves insufficient to support the conclusion that autophagy is cytoprotective in a given experimental tumor line exposed to a particular agent; complementary studies are required that demonstrate that autophagy inhibition sensitizes the tumor cell to the autophagy-inducing treatment. Otherwise, autophagy may be responsible for the growth arrest and/or cell death that is observed with the drug or radiation treatment alone, and autophagy inhibition may simply be converting one form of growth inhibition/cell death to an alternative pathway that achieves the same end result in terms of sensitivity to the treatment.  相似文献

A tetrapeptide, RGDS, was inserted into proUK kringle domain G118-L119 by the construction of a mutant proUK-RGDS gene. The gene was expressed in the baculovirus expression system. Immunoaffinity chromatography was used to purify the chimera and protein with purity over 90% was achieved. The chimera was tested for its platelet membrane binding function and showed a calcium-dependent platelet binding activity. Amidolytic activity of the chimera was tested. The result indicated that specific amidolytic activity of plasmin activated chimera was 62000 IU/mg, comparable to the previously reported 65 355 IU/mg of plasmin activated natural proUK. Activation of plasminogen by the chimera after plasmin treatment followed Micbieal-Menten kinetics, and the Km was 0.97 μmol/L, which was also comparable to 1.64 μmol/L of native urokinase. The chimera also showed intensive ability to inhibit platelet aggregation in vitro. These results indicate that this chimera might be useful as a bifunctional thrombolytic agent.  相似文献

LYLA1 is a chimeric protein mainly consisting of residues originating from human lysozyme but in which the central part (Ca2+-binding site and helix C) of bovine α-lactalbumin has been inserted. The equilibrium unfolding of this hybrid protein has been examined by circular dichroism and tryptophan fluorescence techniques. The reversible denaturation process induced by temperature or by addition of chemical denaturant is three-state in the case of apo-LYLA1 and two-state in the presence of Ca2+. The Ca2+-bound form of the chimera exhibits higher stability than both wild-type lysozyme and α-lactalbumin. The stability of the apo-form, however, is intermediate between that of the parent molecules. Unfolding of apo-LYLA1 involves an intermediate state that becomes populated to a different extent under various experimental conditions. Combination of circular dichroism with bis-ANS fluorescence experiments has permitted us to characterize the acid state of LYLA1 as a molten globule. Implicit God-like and ghost-in-the-machine metaphors underlie much current thinking about genomes. Although many criticisms of such views exist, none have succeeded in substituting a different, widely accepted view. Viewing the genome with its protein packaging as a brain gets rid of Gods and ghosts while plausibly integrating machine and information-based views. While the ‘wetware’ of brains and genomes are very different, many fundamental principles of how they function are similar. Eukaryotic cells are compound entities in which case the nuclear genome might best be thought of more as a government than simply as a brain.  相似文献

Hotspots of biodiversity (taxonomic richness, endemism, taxonomic affinities between communities) at small (), medium () and larger () scales of diversity were examined for marine sponge populations throughout tropical and subtropical Australia, with the faunas of Vanuatu, Palau and Thailand used as outgroups for comparison. Spatial and numerical (ordination) models and hierarchic classifications delineated 37 and 13 scale faunas from 1343 investigated localities using a pool of 2324 species. The Australian taxonomic literature was ignored completely to avoid the many still unresolved taxonomic problems and to allow equal treatment of collecting localities. Richness and endemism varied considerably between marine areas, for species and genera at all spatial scales, with gradients strongly corroborated by hierarchic taxonomic relationships between faunas. Richness and endemism were equally effective indicators of biodiversity hotspots, whereas species-level vs. genus-level data produced differing patterns, with the latter substantially underestimating biodiversity and marine area relationships, and consequently a poor 'surrogate for species data. Patterns of taxa shared between adjacent areas were more informative than richness and endemism data alone, as they more accurately reflect the processes in these areas. Latitudinal gradients in sponge diversity were not evident, whereas various environmental factors were prominent at scales and biogeographic factors were prominent at and scales of diversity. An example of a small () scale diversity fauna revealed substantial spatial heterogeneity (mean of 41 spp/locality, 33% apparently endemic, and a total fauna of 226 spp) containing few ubiquitous species (40% or 78 spp), with adjacent reefs having relatively low faunal similarity (mean 33%). Faunas at the medium () scale of diversity were less heterogeneous (mean 127 spp/region, 27% apparently endemic to a particular region, with a total fauna of 2324 spp), containing a significantly larger dataset (829 spp) found in >1 region to assess taxonomic affinities. At the larger () scale of diversity faunas were far more heterogeneous (mean 263 spp/region, 47% apparently endemic to a particular region) containing a smaller dataset (only 588 spp or 26% of the fauna with >1 species/region) to assess taxonomic affinities. Consequently, sponge faunas at the and scales of diversity are ineffective and inappropriate as biodiversity models, respectively, with scale diversity also less relevant as a practical tool for marine resource management and marine area conservation.  相似文献

Noise is a major problem in analyzing tracking data of cargos moved by molecular motors. We use Bayesian statistics to incorporate what is known about the noise in parsing the trajectory of a cargo into a series of constant velocity segments. Tracks with just noise and no underlying motion are fit with constant velocity segments to produce a calibration curve of fit quality versus average segment duration. Fits to tracks of moving cargos are compared to the calibration curves with similar noise. The fit with the optimum number of constant velocity states has the least number of segments needed to match the fit quality of the calibration curve. We have tested this approach using tracks with known underlying motion generated by computer simulations and with a specially designed in vitro experiment. We present the results of using this parsing approach to analyze transport of lipid droplets in Drosophila embryos.  相似文献

In Theories of Race and Ethnicity: Contemporary Debates and Perspectives, in contrast, Murji and Solomos identify what has and has not been covered, and so appeal at the outset for a ‘more sustained’ account of changing research agendas of race and ethnic relations. Summary. The modeling of whole organism sulfur amino acid flux control has been aided in recent years by advancements in proteomics and mass spectroscopy-based metabolite analysis. The convergence of these two fields and their respective techniques, as demonstrated by a new study using yeast by Lafaye et al., has shown that researchers seeking to model whole cell/organism metabolism should give careful consideration to the relationships connecting enzyme concentration, enzyme activity, substrate concentration, and metabolic flux. In this paper, we outline some of the fundamental concepts for modeling sulfur amino acid metabolism and how they relate to our current understanding of mammalian sulfur amino acid metabolism.  相似文献

Considerable progress has been made in our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms of the placebo effect, and most of our knowledge originates from the field of pain and analgesia. Today, the placebo effect represents a promising model that could allow us to shed new light on mind-body interactions. The mental events induced by placebo administration can activate mechanisms that are similar to those activated by drugs, which indicates a similarity between psychosocial and pharmacodynamic effects. These new neurobiological advances are already changing our conception of how clinical trials and medical practice must be viewed and conducted.  相似文献

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the biologist Joseph Grinnell made a distinction between science and sentiment for producing fact-based generalizations on how to conserve biodiversity. We are inspired by Grinnellian science, which successfully produced a century-long impact on studying and conserving biodiversity that runs orthogonal to some familiar philosophical distinctions such as fact versus value, emotion versus reason and basic versus applied science. According to Grinnell, unlike sentiment-based generalizations, a fact-based generalization traces its diverse commitments and thus becomes tractable for its audience. We argue that foregrounding tractability better explains Grinnell’s practice in the context of his time as well as in the context of current discourse among scientists over the political “biases” of biodiversity research and its problem of “reproducibility.”  相似文献

The origins and meanings of “cladogram” are reviewed. Traditionally, “cladogram” has been defined as a graphical representation of an empirical hypothesis of relationships among taxa, based on evidence from synapomorphies alone. Disturbingly, numerous recent authors treat “cladogram” as synonymous with “dendrogram” and do not appreciate the particular methodological connotations of the former term.
