Possible tradeoffs between efficiency of water transport and mechanical strength were examined in stems of two congeneric pairs of co-occurring chaparral shrubs. First, since previously published results indicated that Adenostoma sparsifolium (Rosaceae) had greater specific conductivity (k s or hydraulic conductivity per xylem transverse area) than A. fasciculatum, it was hypothesized that A. sparsifolium would have greater vessel lumen area per square millimeter of xylem area, and less mechanical strength, than A. fasciculatum. Secondly, since Ceanothus megacarpus (Rhamnaceae) is a non-sprouter (unable to sprout from the root crown following fire or other major disturbance) whereas C. spinosus is a sprouter and thus able to form new stems following disturbance, it was hypothesized that C. megacarpus would have greater mechanical strength, but lower k s, than C. spinosus. Both hypotheses were supported. Based upon computer-aided image analyses, A. sparsifolum had significantly higher mean and maximum vessel diameters (16.4, 40.5 vs. 14.6, 35.7 μm), a 34% greater percent vessel lumen area, and a two-fold greater measured and theoretical k s than A. fasciculatum. This corresponded to 14% lower stem density (wet weight/volume) and less mechanical strength, with a 37% lower modulus of elasticity (MOE) and a 30% lower modulus of rupture (MOR) than A. fasciculatum. Similarly, C.␣spinosus had a significantly higher maximum vessel diameter (52.7 vs. 41.8 μm) and a 92% higher theoretical k s (and 43% higher measured k s) than C. megacarpus. This corresponded to a 9% lower stem density and 20% lower MOR than for C. megacarpus. Thus, at least within these two congeneric pairs of chaparral shrubs growing together in the same habitat, there may be tradeoffs between mechanical strength and conductive efficiency of the stem xylem which correspond to differences in transport physiology and life history traits of sprouter versus non-sprouter species.  相似文献

The variation in the stiffness of stem and leaf sheaths along the shoot axis of Triticale (Triticosecale W., cv. Jago) was examined, using an ultrasonic method, at two stages of development, (i) at the stage of high stem mechanical instability when upper internodes are forming (heading), and (ii) at milk maturity when development of strengthening tissues is completed (three weeks after anthesis). The squared velocity of low-frequency longitudinal pulse waves was used as a measure of the specific modulus of elasticity, averaged over the whole cross section of the structures and related to the unit density of the material. Structural material of varying effective stiffness was found to be utilized along leaf sheaths with a pattern complementary to that in growing stems. The stiffness increased basipetally along leaf sheaths in the direction of increasing flexibility of internodes. Maximum values of the specific modulus of elasticity in particular leaf sheaths were enhanced acropetally, ensuring the stronger mechanical protection of those meristematic zones which were actively elongating and were located at the upper internodes. The stiffest material present in leaf sheaths covered only those stem sections which could be the most critical for plant safety during stem elongation. This characteristic and very regular pattern of stiffness alteration along the shoot axis was structurally determined as it remained similar after air drying the specimens. It is concluded that adaptation of cereals to withstand environmental loads is realized not only on morphological and anatomical levels but is also reflected in a specific heterogeneity in the material properties of the cell walls which support the plant. This research was supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Poland (Project CPBR 10.1 C 29).  相似文献

This paper presents the AutoQual elastography method: a novel algorithm that improves the quality of 2D displacement field calculation from ultrasound radio frequency (RF) sequences of acutely ruptured Achilles tendons to determine image-lateral strain fields and has potential use for ligaments and muscles. This method uses 2D bicubic spline interpolation of the RF signal, Quality Determined Search, Automatic Search Range and Adaptive Block Size components as a novel combination that is designed to improve continuity and decrease displacement field noise, especially in areas of low signal strength. We present a simple experiment for quantitatively comparing the AutoQual method to a multiscale (MS) elastography method from ultrasound RF sequences of a 5% agar phantom for rigid body motion and known lateral strain loads with speeds up to 5 mm/s. We finally present examples of four in vivo Achilles tendons in various damage states and with manual or artificially controlled passive flexion of the foot. Results show that the AutoQual method offers a substantial improvement on the MS method, achieving similar performance for rigid body tracking at all speeds, a lower normalized square error at all strains induced and a more continuous strain field at higher compression rates. AutoQual also showed a greater average normalized cross correlation for image blocks in the area of interest, a lower standard deviation of the strain field and a visually more acceptable point tracking for in vivo examples. This work demonstrates lateral ultrasound elastography which is robust to the complex passive motion of the Achilles and to various imaging artifacts associated with imaging tendon rupture. This method potentially has a wide clinical application for assessing in vivo strains in and hence mechanical function of any near skin surface tissues that are longitudinally loaded.  相似文献

The aim of this article was to present the extent to which the state-of-the art ultrasonographic imaging can be used to visualize the features of the human corpus luteum (CL). In the late 1970s, the first ultrasonographic images of human CLs were published. The advent of transvaginal, high-resolution transducers has greatly improved the quality of imaging as did the subsequent introduction of color Doppler and 3D ultrasonography. In the present technical note, the examples of the various technical and imaging modalities used to examine the human CLs are shown. CL is a short-lived structure with a highly variable morphological appearance and the 3D ultrasonographic technique is an ideal tool to perform standardized measurements on the CL. The introduction of new imaging techniques in clinical reproductive medicine can only be successful if operators are properly trained.  相似文献

Cancellous bone is a highly porous material, and two types of waves, fast and slow, are observed when ultrasound is used for detecting bone diseases. There are several possible stimuli for bone remodelling processes, including bone fluid flow, streaming potential, and piezoelectricity. Poroelasticity has been widely used for elucidating the bone fluid flow phenomenon, but the combination of poroelasticity with charge density has not been introduced. Theoretically, general poroelasticity with a varying charge density is employed for determining the relationship between wave velocity and attenuation with charge density. Fast wave velocity and attenuation are affected by porosity as well as charge density; however, for a slow wave, both slow wave velocity and attenuation are not as sensitive to the effect of charge density as they are for a fast wave. Thus, employing human femoral data, we conclude that charged ions gather on trabecular struts, and the fast wave, which moves along the trabecular struts, is significantly affected by charge density.  相似文献

In the context of osteoporosis, evaluation of bone fracture risk and improved design of epiphyseal bone implants rely on accurate knowledge of the mechanical properties of trabecular bone. A multi-axial loading chamber was designed, built and applied to explore the compressive multi-axial yield and strength properties of human trabecular bone from different anatomical locations. A thorough experimental protocol was elaborated for extraction of cylindrical bone samples, assessment of their morphology by micro-computed tomography and application of different mechanical tests: torsion, uni-axial traction, uni-axial compression and multi-axial compression. A total of 128 bone samples were processed through the protocol and subjected to one of the mechanical tests up to yield and failure. The elastic data were analyzed using a tensorial fabric–elasticity relationship, while the yield and strength data were analyzed with fabric-based, conewise generalized Hill criteria. For each loading mode and more importantly for the combined results, strong relationships were demonstrated between volume fraction, fabric and the elastic, yield and strength properties of human trabecular bone. Despite the reviewed limitations, the obtained results will help improve the simulation of the damage behavior of human bones and bone-implant systems using the finite element method.  相似文献

The present study aims to investigate the feasibility of using the time-reversed Lamb wave as a new method for noninvasive characterization of long cortical bones. The group velocity of the time-reversed Lamb wave launched by using the modified time reversal method was measured in 15 bovine tibiae, and their correlations with the bone properties of the tibia were examined. The group velocity of the time-reversed Lamb wave showed significant positive correlations with the bone properties (r = 0.55–0.81). The best univariate predictor of the group velocity of the time-reversed Lamb wave was the cortical thickness, yielding an adjusted squared correlation coefficient (r2) of 0.64. These results imply that the group velocity of the time-reversed Lamb wave, in addition to the velocities of the first arriving signal and the slow guided wave, could potentially be used as a discriminator for osteoporosis.  相似文献

This study aimed to characterize the mechanical responses of the sclera, the white outer coat of the eye, under equal-biaxial loading with unrestricted shear. An ultrasound speckle tracking technique was used to measure tissue deformation through sample thickness, expanding the capabilities of surface strain techniques. Eight porcine scleral samples were tested within 72 h postmortem  . High resolution ultrasound scans of scleral cross-sections along the two loading axes were acquired at 25 consecutive biaxial load levels. An additional repeat of the biaxial loading cycle was performed to measure a third normal strain emulating a strain gage rosette for calculating the in-plane shear. The repeatability of the strain measurements during identical biaxial ramps was evaluated. A correlation-based ultrasound speckle tracking algorithm was used to compute the displacement field and determine the distributive strains in the sample cross-sections. A Fung type constitutive model including a shear term was used to determine the material constants of each individual specimen by fitting the model parameters to the experimental stress–strain data. A non-linear stress–strain response was observed in all samples. The meridian direction had significantly larger strains than that of the circumferential direction during equal-biaxial loadings (P's<0.05P's<0.05). The stiffness along the two directions was also significantly different (P=0.02) but highly correlated (R2=0.8). These results showed that the mechanical properties of the porcine sclera were nonlinear and anisotropic under biaxial loading. This work has also demonstrated the feasibility of using ultrasound speckle tracking for strain measurements during mechanical testing.  相似文献

Pinus radiata D. Don trees were grown in the presence and absence of the woody weed broom (Cytisus scoparius L.) on a dryland site for 2 years to determine the effects of competition from weeds on wood properties in juvenile trees. Wood property measurements made on cross-sections from the bark to the pith were scaled to convert results from distance to a time basis using sigmoidal equations fitted to monthly measurements of tree diameter. When averaged across the 2 years, the presence of the weeds significantly increased wood density (+11%), wall thickness (+6%) and modulus of elasticity (MOESS, +93%), and significantly reduced microfibril angle (MFA, –21%) and radial diameter (–8%). Radial growth rate was significantly correlated to wood density, and this relationship held across both treatment and age. At the seasonal scale, there was close correspondence between changes in MFA and growth rate. Ring width was significantly related to both MFA and MOESS at the annual scale. Although both of these relationships held across treatments, year significantly influenced the value of coefficients in the relationships. The results highlight the direct effects of the presence of weeds on wood properties and the need to consider silvicultural treatments appropriate for balancing gains in productivity with losses in wood quality for timber production.  相似文献

Abstract

Watermelon seed is the potential source of value-added proteins, oils, and carbohydrates. The present study evaluates the extraction, and functional properties of watermelon seed protein (WMSP) obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) method from watermelon seed (WMS). The optimization of various operating parameters, such as pH (9), WMS powder to solvent ratio (1:50 w/v), temperature (30?±?2?°C), ultrasound power (90?W), frequency (25?kHz), and duty cycle (75%) has been carried out. The extraction yield obtained was 87% and the extraction time was lowered down to 9?min from 120?min of conventional batch extraction. It contains all essential amino acids in an adequate amount required for adults as per FAO/WHO guidelines while for 2–5?years old children, the content of valine and isoleucine are above the required range. Methionine and lysine contents are adequate for both children and adults. Functional properties of ultrasonic extracted proteins were found superior to conventionally extracted proteins.

Movement complexity can be defined as the capability of using different strategies to accomplish a specific task and is expected to increase with maturation, reaching its highest level in adulthood.Multiscale Entropy (MSE) has been proposed to estimate complexity on different kinematic signals, at different time scales. When applied on trunk acceleration data during natural walking (NW) at different ages, MSE decreased from childhood to adulthood, apparently contradicting the premises. On the contrary, authors hypothesised that this decrease was dependent on the specific task analysed and resulted from the concurrent increase in gait automaticity. This work aims to test this hypothesis, applying MSE on a non-paradigmatic task (tandem walking, TW), in order to exclude aspects related to automaticity.MSE was estimated on trunk acceleration data, collected on children, adolescents, and young adults during TW and NW. As hypothesized, MSE increased significantly with age in TW and decreased in NW on the sagittal plane. Assuming the development of complexity in TW as reference, MSE in NW showed a reduction to half of the complexity of TW with maturation on the sagittal plane. These results indicate MSE as sensitive to differences in performance due to maturation and to expected changes in complexity related to the specific performed task.  相似文献

Recent first attempts of in situ ultrasound strain imaging in collateral ligaments encountered a number of challenges and illustrated a clear need for additional studies and more thorough validation of the available strain imaging methods. Therefore, in this study we experimentally validated ultrasound strain measurements of ex vivo human lateral collateral ligaments in an axial loading condition. Moreover, the use of high frequency ultrasound (>20 MHz) for strain measurement was explored and its performance compared to conventional ultrasound. The ligaments were stretched up to 5% strain and ultrasound measurements were compared to surface strain measurements from optical digital image correlation (DIC) techniques. The results show good correlations between ultrasound based and DIC based strain measures with R2 values of 0.71 and 0.93 for high frequency and conventional ultrasound, subsequently. The performance of conventional ultrasound was significantly higher compared to high frequency ultrasound strain imaging, as the high frequency based method seemed more prone to errors. This study demonstrates that ultrasound strain imaging is feasible in ex vivo lateral collateral ligaments, which are relatively small structures. Additional studies should be designed for a more informed assessment of optimal in vivo strain measurements in collateral knee ligaments.  相似文献

According to the cohesion theory for the ascent of water in vascular plants, significant tensions should develop in the water columns of transpiring trees. These tensions cause small but detectable changes in the diameter of the xylem as a consequence of adhesive forces between water molecules and the inner xylem walls. The diurnal time course of tension in the water columns in the xylem of the trunk of mature Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) was measured during the summer of 1995 by means of a displacement transducer mounted on a rigid steel frame. The apparent elastic modulus of Scots pine wood in the radial direction (E  r ) was determined in the laboratory and then used to estimate tensions from the measured displacement. Laboratory measurements on logs indicated that only the sapwood contributed to dimensional changes of the xylem. Corrections for thermal expansion of the system were included. Water tensions fell by 0.19 MPa over the course of the day, when needle water potentials fell by 0.50 MPa. Such data are consistent with the cohesion theory, and with the view that the hydraulic resistances to flow in above- and below-ground plant parts are of similar magnitude. The sternocostal and clavicular regions of the pectoralis major are independently harvested to provide shoulder stability, but surgical decision making does not consider the biomechanical consequences that disinsertion of one fiber region over the other has on shoulder function. Differences in material properties between the fiber regions could influence which tissue is more optimal for surgical harvesting. The current study utilized ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE) to investigate whether the in vivo material properties differ between the fiber regions. Shear wave velocities (SWVs) were collected from the sternocostal and clavicular fiber regions of the pectoralis major from ten healthy young male participants. Participants produced isometric shoulder torques of varying magnitudes (passive, 15%, and 30% MVC) and directions (horizontal and vertical adduction). Four shoulder positions encompassing different vertical abduction and external rotation angles were examined. One-way ANOVAs tested the hypotheses that differences in SWVs during rest existed between the fiber regions as a function of shoulder position, and differences in SWVs during contraction existed as a function of shoulder position and torque direction. In all shoulder positions, the clavicular region exhibited greater SWVs during rest than the sternocostal region (P < 0.001). In shoulder positions that did not include external rotation, the clavicular region exhibited greater SWVs during contraction when producing horizontal adduction torques (P < 0.001), while the sternocostal region exhibited greater SWVs during contraction when producing vertical adduction torques at 30% MVC (P < 0.01). Our results suggest that each fiber region of the pectoralis major provides unique contributions to passive and active shoulder function.  相似文献

When a force is applied to an object, the resulting pattern of strain is a function of both the object's geometry and its elastic properties. Thus, knowledge of elastic properties in craniofacial cortical bone is indispensable for exploring the biomechanics and adaptation of primate skulls. However, elastic properties, such as density and stiffness, cannot be measured in all species, particularly extinct species known only from fossils. In order for advanced engineering techniques such as finite element analysis (FEA) to be applied to questions of primate and hominid craniofacial functional morphology, it is important to understand interspecific patterns of variation in elastic properties. We hypothesized that closely related species would have similar patterns of bone elastic properties, and that similarities with extant species should allow reasonable predictions of elastic properties in the skeletons of extinct primate species. In this study, we tested this hypothesis by measuring elastic properties in five areas of the external cortex of the baboon craniofacial skeleton using an ultrasonic technique, and by comparing the results to existing data from macaque and human crania. Results showed that cortical density, thickness, elastic and shear moduli, and anisotropy varied among areas in the baboon cranium. Similar variation had previously been found in rhesus and human crania, suggesting area-specific elastic patterns in the skulls of each species. Comparison among species showed differences, suggesting species-specific patterns. These patterns were more similar between macaques and baboons for density, maximum elastic and shear stiffness, and anisotropy than between either of these and humans. This finding demonstrates that patterns of cortical elastic properties are generally similar in closely related primate species with similar craniofacial morphology. Thus, reasonable estimates of cortical bone elastic properties should be possible for extinct species through the study of phylogenetically related and functionally similar modern forms. For example, reasonable elastic property estimates of cortical bone from fossil hominid skulls should be possible once adequate information about such properties in extant great apes is added to our current data from humans, macaques, and baboons. Such data should eventually allow FEA of craniofacial function in fossil hominids.  相似文献

The different methods used to assess patellar tendon elongation in vivo may partly explain the large variation of mechanical properties reported in the literature. The present study investigated the effects of tracking landmark position and tibial point of resistive force application during leg extensions in a dynamometer.Nineteen adults performed isometric contractions with a proximal and distal dynamometer shank pad position. Knee joint moments were calculated employing an inverse dynamics approach. Tendon elongation was measured using the patellar apex and either the tibial tuberosity (T) or plateau (P) as tracking landmark.Using P for tracking introduced a bias towards greater values of tendon elongation at all force levels from 100 N to maximum tendon force (TFmax; p < 0.05). The differences between landmarks considering maximum tendon strain were greater at the proximal shank pad position (p < 0.05). Tendon stiffness was lower for P compared with T, but only in intervals up to 50% of TFmax (p < 0.05). The agreement between T and P for stiffness calculated between 50% and TFmax was acceptable with the distal, but poor with the proximal pad position. We demonstrated that using the tibia plateau and not the insertion as tracking landmark clearly affects the assessment of the force–elongation curve of the patellar tendon. However, using a distal point of resistive force application and calculating tendon stiffness between 50% and TFmax seems to yield an acceptable agreement between landmarks. These findings have important implications for the assessment of tendon properties in vivo and cross-study comparisons.  相似文献

Pollution of the environment by human and animal faecal pollution affects the safety of shellfish, drinking water and recreational beaches. To pinpoint the origin of contaminations, it is essential to define the differences between human microbiota and that of farm animals. A strategy based on real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays was therefore developed and applied to compare the composition of intestinal microbiota of these two groups. Primers were designed to quantify the 16S rRNA gene from dominant and subdominant bacterial groups. TaqMan® probes were defined for the qPCR technique used for dominant microbiota. Human faecal microbiota was compared with that of farm animals using faecal samples collected from rabbits, goats, horses, pigs, sheep and cows. Three dominant bacterial groups ( Bacteroides/Prevotella, Clostridium coccoides and Bifidobacterium ) of the human microbiota showed differential population levels in animal species. The Clostridium leptum group showed the lowest differences among human and farm animal species. Human subdominant bacterial groups were highly variable in animal species. Partial least squares regression indicated that the human microbiota could be distinguished from all farm animals studied. This culture-independent comparative assessment of the faecal microbiota between humans and farm animals will prove useful in identifying biomarkers of human and animal faecal contaminations that can be applied to microbial source tracking methods.  相似文献
