Musculo-skeletal modeling can greatly help in understanding normal and pathological functioning of the spine. For such models to produce reliable muscle and joint force estimations, an adequate set of musculo-skeletal data is necessary. In this study, we present a complete and coherent dataset for the lumbar spine, based on medical images and dissection measurements from one embalmed human cadaver. We divided muscles into muscle-tendon elements, digitized their attachments at the bones and measured morphological parameters. In total, we measured 11 muscles from one body side, using 96 elements. For every muscle element, we measured three-dimensional coordinates of its attachments, fiber length, tendon length, sarcomere length, optimal fiber length, pennation angle, mass, and physiological cross-sectional area together with the geometry of the lumbar spine. Results were consistent with other anatomical studies and included new data for the serratus posterior inferior muscle. The dataset presented in this paper enables a complete and coherent musculo-skeletal model for the lumbar spine and will improve the current state-of-the art in predicting spinal loading.  相似文献

Measurements of the geometry and fibrous-sheet structure of the left and right ventricles of the pig heart are fitted with a finite element model. Mechanical changes during the heart cycle are computed by solving the equations of motion under specified ventricular boundary conditions and using experimentally defined constitutive laws for the active and passive material properties of myocardial tissue. The resulting patterns of deformation, such as axial torsion and changes in wall thickness and base-apex length, are consistent with experimental observations. The model can therefore be used to predict sarcomere length changes and other strain patterns throughout the myocardium and throughout the cardiac cycle. Here we present sarcomere length changes at a limited number of material points within the wall. Sarcomere length typically varies by 10% above and below the unloaded length; although under the boundary conditions imposed in the current model the midwall circumferentially oriented sarcomere lengths increased by up to 20% at end diastole. We provide web-access details for a downloadable software program designed to provide more extensive information on mechanical deformation, such as the principal strains and muscle fibre cross-sectional area changes during the cardiac cycle.  相似文献

In-vitro biomechanical testing is widely performed for characterizing the load-displacement characteristics of intact, injured, degenerated, and surgically repaired osteoligamentous spine specimens. Traditional specimen fixture devices offer an unspecified rigidity of fixation, while varying in the associated amounts and reversibility of damage to and “coverage” of a specimen – factors that can limit surgical access to structures of interest during testing as well as preclude the possibility of testing certain segments of a specimen. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop a specimen fixture system for spine biomechanical testing that uses components of clinically available spinal fixation hardware and determine whether the new system provides sufficient rigidity for spine biomechanical testing. Custom testing blocks were mounted into a robotic testing system and the angular deflection of the upper fixture was measured indirectly using linear variable differential transformers. The fixture system had an overall stiffness 37.0, 16.7 and 13.3 times greater than a typical human functional spine unit for the flexion/extension, axial rotation and lateral bending directions respectively – sufficient rigidity for biomechanical testing. Fixture motion when mounted to a lumbar spine specimen revealed average motion of 0.6, 0.6, and 1.5° in each direction. This specimen fixture method causes only minimal damage to a specimen, permits testing of all levels of a specimen, and provides for surgical access during testing.  相似文献

This work investigates the structure of native calf thymus chromatin as a function of fiber length and isolation procedures by using X-ray small angle scattering technique. Two methods of chromatin isolation have been compared in order to better understand the differences reported by various authors in terms of chromatin high order structure. In addition to these experimental results the effects of shearing have also been studied. In order to explain the differences among these chromatin preparations we built several models of chromatin fibers (represented as a chain of spherical subunits) assuming increasing level of condensation at increasing salt concentrations. For all these fiber models the corresponding theoretical X-ray scattering curves have been calculated and these results have been used to explain the influence of fiber length on the scattering profiles of chromatin. The comparison between experimental and theoretical curves confirms that the high molecular weight chromatin-DNA prepared by hypotonic swelling of nuclei (without enzymatic digestion) displays a partially folded structure even at low ionic strength, whereas the low molecular weight chromatin-DNA prepared by a brief nuclease digestion appears very weakly folded at the same ionic conditions.  相似文献

Structural models are proposed for amylose-fatty acid complexes depending on the respective chain lengths of their constituents. The three studied fatty acids induce the Vh amylose crystalline type. However, in contrast to lauric and palmitic acids, caprylic acid is not present in crystals. On the basis of the relative amounts of amylose and fatty acid determined in complexes and previous results of molecular modelling, inclusion of lauric and palmitic acids inside the amylose helices is proposed; the acyl chains are included in crystalline areas and the car☐ylic groups in amorphous areas. The absence of caprylic acid in crystals could be due to the solubility of this compound in the crystallization medium.  相似文献

Regression equations relating length to dry weight have been derived for the four larval instars of Chaoborus flavicans (Meigen). A general equation, in which all instars are lumped, was also developed, but produces biased results outside a rather narrow central interval.The rate of increase, in terms of weight, is minimal in first instar larvae and maximal in fourth instar larvae, while the second and third instars are both intermediate and very closely related to one another.Three critical points have been defined, corresponding to body lengths at which a particular instar has to molt in order to be able to continue growing optimally.
Résumé Des équations de régression longueur-poids sec ont été établies pur les différents stades aquatiques de développement de Chaoborus flavicans (MEIGEN).La croissance pondérale, minimale pour les larves de premier stade, est maximale au cours du quatrième stade; les larves de deuxième et de troisième stade présentent des croissances comparables.L'emploi des équations propres à chaque stade est préférable à celui de l'équation moyenne établie pour l'ensemble des quatre stades larvaires.

Proctolin is a neuroactive pentapeptide first isolated from the cockroach Periplaneta americana in which it has an excitatory effect on contractions on visceral muscles of the hindgut. Subsequently, proctolin is reported in a wide variety of invertebrates, and considerable efforts have been made to determine its mode of action. Its primary role appears to be that of a neuromodulator rather than a classical neurotransmitter, and it may also serve as a neurohormone, depending on the muscles examined. The present study identifies the vagina muscles of the blood‐sucking insect Rhodnius prolixus (Stål) as a proctolinergic system. Physiological doses of proctolin generate prolonged contractions that closely mimic the effects of motor nerve stimulation. This preparation is convenient and robust, warranting its use as an experimental system to further understand the role of proctolin in the regulation of muscle contractions in insects. Moreover, these muscles are innervated by an identifiable inhibitory component providing a means to investigate the interaction between proctolin excitation and neural inhibition.  相似文献

Objective: The present study compared surface electromyographic (sEMG) activity obtained from the submental muscle group for a tongue press and a head lift exercise as potential therapeutic exercises for dysphagic elderly. Materials and methods: Fifty‐three healthy volunteers with a mean age of 35.3 participated in this study. Subjects were required to perform an isometric task, pressing their tongue against the hard palate, and an isotonic task requiring sustained lingual force against the hard palate. Pressure sensors were used to measure the amount of lingual pressure against the hard palate. Submental sEMG data from these tasks were compared with those obtained from the isometric and isotonic aspects of a head lift exercise. Results: No sEMG differences were identified between the isometric tongue press task and head lift exercise. Isotonic tongue press exercises resulted in significantly higher maximum and mean sEMG values compared with the isotonic head lift exercise (p < 0.05). The submental sEMG activity from the tongue press exercise was equal (isometric) to, or greater (isotonic) than comparable muscle activation obtained during the head lift exercise. Conclusions: The tongue press exercise may be less strenuous than the head lift exercise while achieving the same therapeutic effect.  相似文献

Optimal experiment design for parameter estimation (OED/PE) has become a popular tool for efficient and accurate estimation of kinetic model parameters. When the kinetic model under study encloses multiple parameters, different optimization strategies can be constructed. The most straightforward approach is to estimate all parameters simultaneously from one optimal experiment (single OED/PE strategy). However, due to the complexity of the optimization problem or the stringent limitations on the system's dynamics, the experimental information can be limited and parameter estimation convergence problems can arise. As an alternative, we propose to reduce the optimization problem to a series of two-parameter estimation problems, i.e., an optimal experiment is designed for a combination of two parameters while presuming the other parameters known. Two different approaches can be followed: (i) all two-parameter optimal experiments are designed based on identical initial parameter estimates and parameters are estimated simultaneously from all resulting experimental data (global OED/PE strategy), and (ii) optimal experiments are calculated and implemented sequentially whereby the parameter values are updated intermediately (sequential OED/PE strategy).This work exploits OED/PE for the identification of the Cardinal Temperature Model with Inflection (CTMI) (Rosso et al., 1993). This kinetic model describes the effect of temperature on the microbial growth rate and encloses four parameters. The three OED/PE strategies are considered and the impact of the OED/PE design strategy on the accuracy of the CTMI parameter estimation is evaluated. Based on a simulation study, it is observed that the parameter values derived from the sequential approach deviate more from the true parameters than the single and global strategy estimates. The single and global OED/PE strategies are further compared based on experimental data obtained from design implementation in a bioreactor. Comparable estimates are obtained, but global OED/PE estimates are, in general, more accurate and reliable.  相似文献
