The performance of three species of trichogrammatids on the pest, Helicoverpa armigera was evaluated in the laboratory and screenhouse conditions in Karnataka, India during 1996-97. Laboratory studies indicated that Trichogramma chilonis and Trichogramma pretiosum were more effective parasitoids of H. armigera than Trichogramma brasiliense. In screenhouse conditions, T. chilonis was the most effective parasitoid of H. armigera eggs on sunflower plants in comparison to the other two trichogrammatid species. When releasing 50?000 per ha on sunflower and redgram, T. chilonis parasitised 50.1 and 11.4% H. armigera eggs, respectively. The position of H. armigera eggs on different plant parts of sunflower had no effect on parasitism by T. chilonis. However, parasitism by the same trichogrammatid among different plant parts of redgram varied significantly. It parasitized 43.4 and 18.7% H. armigera eggs on leaves and flowers, respectively, and significantly fewer, 3.9%, on pods (P<0.05). The growth stage of redgram plants also had an effect on parasitism by T. chilonis, parasitism being extremely low on plants with pods.  相似文献

ITS-2-RFLP method was employed to distinguish 12 different trichogrammatids consisting of indigenous and exotic species such as Trichogrammatoidea armigera and Tr. bactrae, Trichogramma achaeae, T. chilonis, T. japonicum, T. embryophagum, T. pretiosum (Thelytokous Form—TF), T. brassicae, T. dendrolimi, T. evanescens and T. mwanzai. ITS-2 region was amplified; complete ITS-2 sequences of nine species were deposited in Genbank. The size of the amplified product ranged from 500 to 900 bp. Restriction enzyme digestion of ITS-2 region showed different banding profiles for these 12 species. Dichotomous keys using the size of the ITS-2 product and the restriction fragment length polymorphism for the enzymes (EcoRI, MseI, MvaI, and TaqI) allowed quick species identification of these trichogrammatids.  相似文献

Trichogramma cordubensis n. sp. is a parasite ofHeliothis armigera Hb. eggs in cotton crops in western Andalusia. Reproduced onEphestia kuehniella Zeller eggs, it is described morphologically and compared withT. chilonis Ishii andT. evanescens Westwood as both present similarities with this species.T. cordubensis can be distinguished in the male genitalia by the shape of the dorsal expansion of the gonobase and the size, shape and relative position of the median ventral projection. Male antennal setae are longer inT. cordubensis than in the other 2 species. In addition, unlikeT. chilonis andT. evanescens, T. cordubensis is thelytokous at 20°C. in our laboratory, though males and gynandromorphs can be obtained by altering the rearing temperature, this being another difference of this species.  相似文献

  • It has been hypothesised that intense metabolism of nectar‐inhabiting yeasts (NIY) may change nectar chemistry, including volatile profile, which may affect pollinator foraging behaviours and consequently plant fitness. However, empirical evidence for the plant–microbe–pollinator interactions remains little known.
  • To test this hypothesis, we use a bumblebee‐pollinated vine Clematis akebioides endemic to southwest China as an experimental model plant. To quantify the incidence and density of Metschnikowia reukaufii, a cosmopolitan NIY in floral nectar, a combination of yeast cultivation and microscopic cell‐counting method was used. To examine the effects of NIY on plant–pollinator interactions, we used real flowers filled with artificial nectar with or without yeast cells. Then the volatile metabolites produced in the yeast‐inoculated nectar were analysed with coupled gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC‐MS).
  • On average 79.3% of the C. akebioides flowers harboured M. reukaufii, and cell density of NIY was high to 7.4 × 104 cells mm?3. In the field population, the presence of NIY in flowers of C. akebioides increased bumblebee (Bombus friseanus) pollinator visitation rate and consequently seed set per flower. A variety of fatty acid derivatives produced by M. reukaufii may be responsible for the above beneficial interactions.
  • The volatiles produced by the metabolism of M. reukaufii may serve as an honest signal to attract bumblebee pollinators and indirectly promote the female reproductive fitness of C. akebioides, forming a potentially tripartite plant–microbe–pollinator mutualism.

The performance of an endosulfan tolerant strain of Trichogramma chilonis Ishii was evaluated against Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) eggs on cotton plants in a net house. Under pesticide pressure, the tolerant strain could provide significantly higher parasitism in comparison to the susceptible strain. The parasitoid adult emergence was also significantly higher in the treatment with the tolerant strain in comparison to the susceptible strain, when parasitoids were released within 3 days of endosulfan spraying. Release of the tolerant strain of T. chilonis in conjunction with endosulfan spray application resulted in significantly higher pest mortality in comparison to the endosulfan treatment or release of T. chilonis alone. It could be inferred from the results that T. chilonis should be released only 3 days after endosulfan spray application as during the first 3 days after the spraying, endosulfan provided the required protection and adversely affected the performance of the parasitoid.  相似文献

Heliothis armigera (Hübner) is a major pest of several crops especially tomato and pulses in India. Indigenous natural enemies likeCarcelia illota Curr.,Campoletis chlorideae Uchida,Trichogramma chilonis Ishii andHexamermis sp are unable to exert adequate control ofH. armigera in tomato. Field trials were conducted with 2 exotic parasites,Trichogramma brasiliensis (Ashmead) andEucelatoria bryani Sabrosky in tomato fields around Bangalore. Both the parasites were recovered fromH. armigera in tomato fields. Field parasitism inH. armigera byT. brasiliensis ranged from 34.6 to 51.3%. We deployed >50,000 Helicoverpa armigera eggs in maize fields to assess the rate of parasitism by Trichogramma chilonis across 33 sites during a three-year span (2012–2014) in northern China. Subsequently, we used a partial least squares (PLS) regression approach to assess the relationship of landscape diversity with composition and parasitism potential. The parasitism rate of H. armigera eggs by T. chilonis ranged from 0–25.8%, with a mean value of 5.6%. Landscape diversity greatly enhanced parasitism at all four different spatial scales (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 km radius). Both the proportion of arable area and the total planting area of two major crops (cotton and maize) had a negative correlation to the parasitism rate at each scale, whereas parasitism was positively correlated to the proportion of host crops of H. armigera other than cotton and maize at the 0.5 to 2.0 km radius scales as well as to that of non-crop habitat at the 0.5 and 1.0 km radius scales. The study indicated that maintaining landscape diversity provided an important biocontrol service by limiting H. armigera through the egg parasitoid T. chilonis, whereas rapid agricultural intensification would greatly reduce the presence and parasitism of T. chilonis in China.  相似文献

Microplitis mediator (Haliday) is an important endoparasitoid of the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) in northern China. Interactions among H. armigera, its larval parasitoid M. mediator, and Cry1Ac over two generations were evaluated under laboratory conditions. The results indicated that the developmental period of M. mediator offspring's eggs and larvae were significantly delayed and pupal and adult weight were significantly less compared to the control when the female parasitoids parasitized H. armigera larvae that fed on diet containing 1, 2, 4 and 8 µg/g Cry1Ac. The female parasitoids emerged from the host fed diet containing 8 µg/g Cry1Ac could oviposit in healthy hosts, and their offspring's biological parameters (egg–larval period, pupal weight and adult weight), parasitism rate, abnormal cocoon rate and adult emergence were not significantly affected. Cry1Ac was detected in larvae and hemolymph of H. armigera, but not in the larvae of M. mediator. The results suggest that the observed significant effects on several fitness parameters of the F1 M. mediator developed from H. armigera fed Cry1Ac diet most likely were host-quality mediated rather than direct effects of Cry1Ac.  相似文献

Nectar‐dwelling yeasts are emerging as widely distributed organisms playing a potentially significant and barely unexplored ecological role in plant pollinator mutualisms. Previous efforts at understanding nectar–pollinator–yeast interactions have focused on bee‐pollinated plants, while the importance of nectarivorous ants as vectors for yeast dispersal remains unexplored so far. Here we assess the abundance and composition of the nectar fungal microbiota of the ant‐pollinated plant Cytinus hypocistis, study whether yeast transmission is coupled with ant visitation, and discern whether ant‐ transported yeasts promote changes in nectar characteristics. Our results show that a high percentage of flowers (77%) and plants (94%) contained yeasts, with yeast cell density in nectar reaching up to 6.2 × 104 cells mm?3, being the highest densities associated with the presence of the nectar‐specialist yeast Metschnikowia reukaufii. The establishment of fungal microbiota in nectar required flower visitation by ants, with 70% of yeast species transported by them being also detected in nectar. Ant‐vectored yeasts diminished the nutritional quality of nectar, with flowers exposed to pollinators and yeasts containing significantly lower nectar sugar concentration than virgin flowers (13.4% and 22.8%, respectively). Nectar of flowers that harbored M. reukaufii showed the lowest quality, with nectar concentration declining significantly with increasing yeast density. Additionally, yeasts modified patterns of interpopulation variation in nectar traits, homo genizing differences between populations in some nectar attributes. We show for the first time that the outcome of the tripartite pollinator–flower–yeast interaction is highly dependent on the identity and inherent properties of the participants, even to the extent of influencing the species composition of this ternary system, and can be mediated by ecological characteristics of plant populations. Through their influence on plant functional traits, yeasts have the potential to alter nectar consumption, pollinator foraging behavior and ultimately plant reproduction.  相似文献

A quadruplex real-time (RT) qPCR assay for the detection and quantification in 4 h of Staphylococcusaureus, Pseudomonasaeruginosa, Acinetobacterbaumannii and Stenotrophomonasmaltophilia directly from bronchoalveolar lavage specimens was developed. Aquatic Metschnikowia species (M. australis, M. bicuspidata, M. krissii, and M. zobellii) are sensitive to 10 out of 12 mycocins secreted by Pichia membranifaciens strains. Terrestrial species M. pulcherrima and M. reukaufii are resistant to all these mycocins, while M. gruessii and M. lunata are sensitive to one of them. Two bacterial consortia were developed by continuous enrichment of microbial population of tannery and pulp and paper mill effluent contained Serratia mercascens, Pseudomonas fluorescence, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter sp. identified by 16S rDNA method. The consortia evaluated for removal of chromate [(Cr(VI)] in shake flask culture indicated pulp and paper mill consortium had more potential for removal of chromate. Acinetobacter sp. isolated from pulp and paper mill consortium removed higher amount of chromate [Cr(VI)] under aerobic conditions. Parameters optimized in different carbon, nitrogen sources, and pH, indicated maximum removal of chromate in sodium acetate (0.2%), sodium nitrate (0.1%) and pH 7 by Acinetobacter sp. Bacteria was applied in 2-l bioreactor significantly removed chromate after 3 days. The results of the study indicated removal of more than 75% chromium by Acinetobacter sp. determined by diphenylcarbazide colorimetric assay and atomic absorption spectrophotometer after 7 days. Study of microbial [Cr(VI)] removal and identification of reduction intermediates has been hindered by the lack of analytical techniques. Therefore, removal of chromium was further substantiated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) which indicated bioaccumulation of chromium in the bacterial cells.  相似文献

Behavioural responses of Helicoverpa armigera egg parasitoid, Trichogramma chilonis and the larval parasitoid, Campoletis chlorideae towards the leaves of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) genotypes (ICGV 86699, ICGV 86031, ICG 2271, and ICG 1697-resistant, and the susceptible check-JL 24) were studied by using a Y-tube olfactometer. Orientation was studied in comparison to clean air, to insect resistant genotypes in relation to JL 24 and towards H. armigera damaged and undamaged leaves. Leaves of ICGV 86699, ICGV 86031 and ICG 2271 were more attractive to T. chilonis adults than to the clean air. They were strongly attracted to the leaves of ICGV 86699, ICGV 86031 and ICG 1697 than of JL 24. Insect damaged leaves of ICGV 86699, ICGV 86031 and ICG 1697 were more attractive than the respective uninfested leaves. C. chlorideae showed greater attraction towards leaves of ICGV 86699, ICG 2271 and ICG 1697 than the clean air, and were more attracted towards leaves of ICGV 86699 and ICGV 86031 than those of JL 24. The damaged leaves of ICGV 86699, ICGV 86031 and ICG 2271 were more attractive to C. chlorideae than the respective uninfested leaves. Thus insect resistant genotypes exhibited greater compatibility with the natural enemies in groundnut.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Twenty-six species of bacteria and seven species of yeasts were aseptically presented separately as potential food sources to the estuarine heterotrich ciliate, Fabrea salina, under standardized conditions of cell number, medium, and temperature. The bacteria and yeasts were classified according to their effect on the intrinsic growth rate of the ciliate: Nutritious bacteria: Photobacterium fisherii, Vibrio neresis, V. natriegens, Flavobacterium sp. strain ASN16, V. harveyi, Xanthomonas sp. strain ASN22; Maintainer bacteria: V. vulnificus, Vibrio sp. strain V344, V. alginolyticus, V. anguillarum, Bacillus sp. strain ST332B2, Vibrio sp. strain V415, Acinetobacter sp. strain BHT8, Flectobacillus marinus, and Enterobacter aerogenes; Maintainer yeasts: Candida albicans and Cryptococcus marcerans strain 2; Nonnutriuous bacteria: V. parahaemolyticus, Planococcus sp. strain ASN13, P. mandapapanensis, Hyphomicrobium vulgari, Pseudomonas sp. strain CNS1, an unidentified gram-negative, yellow-pigmented, motile bacillus strain IG9A2, Thiobacillus thioparus, Escherichia coli, Corynebacterium sp. strain BR 17, Achromobacter sp. strain 23030, and Oceanospirillum beijerinckii; Nonnutriuous yeasts: C. marcerans strain 1, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Debaryomyces hansenii, an unidentified black yeast, and C. laurentii. Under the conditions specified, bacteria appear to have a certain minimal value for the growth of Fabrea while yeast have little to none.  相似文献

This study investigated the olfactory responses of 3 thrips species [Frankliniella schultzei Trybom, F. occidentalis Pergrande and Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)] to cotton seedlings [Gossypium hirsutum L. (Malvales: Malvaceae)] simultaneously damaged by different combinations of herbivores. Cotton seedlings were damaged by foliar feeding Tetranychus urticae Koch (Trombidiforms: Tetranychidae), Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae) or root feeding Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). Thrips responses to plants simultaneously damaged by 2 species of herbivore were additive and equivalent to the sum of the responses of thrips to plants damaged by single herbivore species feeding alone. For example, F. occidentalis was attracted to T. urticae damaged plants but more attracted to undamaged plants than to plants damaged by H. armigera. Plants simultaneously damaged by low densities of T. urticae and H. armigera repelled F. occidentalis but as T. urticae density increased relative to H. armigera density, F. occidentalis attraction to coinfested plants increased proportionally. Thrips tabaci did not discriminate between undamaged plants and plants damaged by H. armigera but were attracted to plants damaged by T. urticae alone or simultaneously damaged by T. urticae and H. armigera. Olfactometer assays showed that simultaneous feeding by 2 herbivores on a plant can affect predator–prey interactions. Attraction of F. occidentalis to plants damaged by its T. urticae prey was reduced when the plant was simultaneously damaged by H. armigera, T. molitor, or A. gossypii and F. schultzei was more attracted to plants simultaneously damaged by T. urticae and H. armigera than to plants damaged by T. urticae alone. We conclude that plant responses to feeding by 1 species of herbivore are affected by responses to feeding by other herbivores. These plant‐mediated interactions between herbivore complexes affect the behavioral responses of thrips which vary between species and are highly context dependent.  相似文献

In addition to genetic differences between individuals as a result of nucleotide sequence variation, epigenetic changes that occur as a result of DNA methylation may also contribute to population niche width by enhancing phenotypic plasticity, although this intriguing possibility remains essentially untested. Using the nectar‐living yeast Metschnikowia reukaufii as study subject, we examine the hypothesis that changes in genome‐wide DNA methylation patterns underlie the ability of this fugitive species to exploit a broad resource range in its heterogeneous and patchy environment. Data on floral nectar characteristics and their use by M. reukaufii in the wild were combined with laboratory experiments and methylation‐sensitive amplified polymorphism (MSAP) analyses designed to detect epigenetic responses of single genotypes to variations in sugar environment that mimicked those occurring naturally in nectar. M. reukaufii exploited a broad range of resources, occurring in nectar of 48% of species and 52% of families surveyed, and its host plants exhibited broad intra‐ and interspecific variation in sugar‐related nectar features. Under experimental conditions, sugar composition, sugar concentration and their interaction significantly influenced the mean probability of MSAP markers experiencing a transition from unmethylated to methylated state. Alterations in methylation status were not random but predictably associated with certain markers. The methylation inhibitor 5‐azacytidine (5‐AzaC) had strong inhibitory effects on M. reukaufii proliferation in sugar‐containing media, and a direct relationship existed across sugar × concentration experimental levels linking inhibitory effect of 5‐AzaC and mean per‐marker probability of genome‐wide methylation. Environmentally induced DNA methylation polymorphisms allowed genotypes to grow successfully in extreme sugar environments, and the broad population niche width of M. reukaufii was largely made possible by epigenetic changes enabling genotype plasticity in resource use.  相似文献

The cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera is one of the most devastating insect pests. A set of protease enzymes allows this species to feed on different host plant species. Control measures in agriculture often involve the application of the pathogenic bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki (Btk). In the present study, the effects of sublethal Btk doses are evaluated with respect to the food utilization indices and proteolytic activities of Helicoverpa armigera. Accordingly, the H. armigera larvae are fed with artificial diet containing sublethal Btk doses (LC5, LC10, LC15, LC20 and LC25) and a Btk‐free diet as control. All but one of the food utilization indices we measured is observed to increase significantly with increasing Btk doses. By contrast, the specific activity of total protease, chymotrypsin and elastase enzymes decrease significantly with an increasing Btk concentration. We conclude that Btk was not toxic to H. armigera larvae and any damage that it causes can be compensated for by H. armigera larvae via various mechanisms. In conclusion, increased nutritional indices in the larvae fed with Btk diet represent an important issue that needs to be considered to avoid the pest establishing Bt resistant populations. Meanwhile, the lack of effect of Btk sublethal concentrations on trypsin enzyme specific activity can bolster this challenge.  相似文献

Application of aqueous suspensions of infective juvenile Heterorhabditis heliothidis, isolate T327, to the soil resulted in up to 100% parasitisation of larvae of the black vine weevil, Otiorhynchus sulcatus, in potted yew, raspberries and grapes in nurseries, and over 87% parasitisation on potted cyclamens and strawberries. Pupae and newly emerged adults on grapevines were also parasitised. Another isolate, T310, produced 92.5 to 98.5% parasitism of O. sulcatus larvae on potted cyclamens in glasshouse, but was less effective on strawberries. Neoaplectana bibionis was found to be less effective than H. heliothidis T327 strain. The use of these nematodes provides an economical and effective method for controlling O. sulcatus on potted plants in glasshouses and nurseries.  相似文献

Trichogramma chilonis Ishii (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) and Trichogrammatoidea bactrae Nagaraja (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) are egg parasitoids of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). We observed and recorded the walking patterns of T. chilonis and T. bactrae females on leaves of Raphanus sativus L., Brassica juncea (L.) Czern. et Coss., Brassica campestris L. ssp. chinensis var. utilis Tsen et Lee, and Brassica oleracea L. Our analysis indicated that Trichogramma females spent more time and moved more slowly on R. sativus leaf surface, compared with the other vegetable leaf surfaces. In addition, Trichogramma females were more likely to walk in straight line on B. oleracea leaf surfaces than R. sativus, B. juncea, and B. campestris leaf surface. Compared to T. bactrae females, T. chilonis females spent significantly less time on the leaf surface, and the walking path of T. chilonis was less affected by leaf surface characters (e.g., trichomes, wrinkle, and waxes). During the period of residence on the leaf surface, parasitoid females spent more than 87.8% of their time moving. This study demonstrates that vegetable leaf surface can influence Trichogramma's walking pattern while they are foraging for hosts.  相似文献
