Chickens are precocial birds, capable of moving independently from within a few hours of hatching, and thus provide a useful model to investigate the development of magnetoreception in young birds. Chicks show some sharply-timed behavioural changes at around 11 days of age that may be indicative of improvements in navigation ability around this age. We trained Young (<10 days, n = 7) and Old (11 days or older, n = 6) chicks to find a hidden imprinting stimulus behind one of four screens in a square arena. Once criterion was reached, the directional choices of chicks were recorded in unrewarded tests in the geomagnetic field and in an experimental field shifted by 90° clockwise. These tests were separated with rewarded training trials to avoid extinction. In the first, and the first 3 tests, no indication was found that chicks chose the correct unimodal magnetic direction. Instead, in all tests, Old chicks preferred the screens in the same magnetic axis as the training direction in tests in the geomagnetic and shifted experimental fields significantly more than Young chicks (P < 0.05). Choices of Young chicks were no different to chance in tests, whereas choices by Old chicks were significantly different from chance (P < 0.05). Our findings support the hypothesis that magnetoreception appears in the second week of life in the chicken. It is, however, unclear when a truly directional magnetic response (i.e. an unimodal, rather than axial, response in our test) develops that could be used by the chicks for accurate navigation.  相似文献

Two groups of chickens (Gallus domesticus; White Leghorn; age, 4 d and 2 wk) housed in a university research vivarium were found dead or moribund without prior signs of illness. The overall mortality rates were 92.3% (60 of 65 birds) for the 4-d-old birds and 80% (8 of 10) for the 2-wk-old birds. All chicks were housed in brooders with heat lamps in a temperature- and humidity-controlled room. Primary gross findings were mild to moderate dehydration and hepatic lipidosis. The most consistent histologic findings were pulmonary hemorrhage and edema in all 7 of the 4-d-old birds evaluated and in all 4 of the 2-wk-old birds assessed. In addition, 1 of the 4-d-old birds had multifocal centrilobular hepatic necrosis. These findings suggested an inhaled toxicant and hypoxia, respectively. Inspection of the animal room revealed that approximately 50% of the heat lamp bulbs in the brooder cage were coated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Two published case reports detail similar experiences in birds exposed to PTFE-coated heat-lamp bulbs. Birds are highly sensitive to inhaled toxicants owing to the high efficiency of their respiratory systems, and PTFE toxicosis is known to cause pulmonary edema and hemorrhage in pet birds after exposure to overheated nonstick cookware. In the present case, the bulbs were replaced, and no similar problems subsequently have been noted. This case illustrates the sensitivity of avian species to respiratory toxicants and serves as a reminder that toxicosis can be encountered even in the controlled environment of a laboratory vivarium.  相似文献

Thyroxine increases during a molt in wild and captive birds, and thyroidectomy prevents induction of molt. This trial examined the effect of dietary thyroxine on molt induction molt in chickens (laying hens, 59 weeks of age). In a completely randomized design (n=15 hens/replication; 6 replications/treatment), hens were randomly assigned to either a traditional molting program consisting of feed withdrawal (FWD), or to diets containing 40 mg thyroxine/kg diet (HT), 20 mg thyroxine/kg diet (LT), or 40 mg thyroxine from thyroactive iodinated casein/kg diet (TIC). The molting treatment lasted 7-13 d, until egg production reached 0%. After molt induction, birds had ad libitum access to the same diet, until egg production was re-initiated and maximized ( approximately 56 d). All treatments induced molt, based upon cessation of egg laying and regression of ovary and oviduct. Birds on FWD treatment lost more body weight during the molting period, but gained more after molt compared to thyroxine treatments (P<0.01 for each), although all body weights were similar when egg production was maximized. Data demonstrate that oral thyroxine, in purified or non-purified form, induces a molt and may enhance animal well-being by reducing the need for FWD.  相似文献

Sixteen haploid-diploid chickens, four diploid-triploids, and one haploid-diploid-triploid chicken have been found in a layer line of crossbred origin. Live haploid-euploid vertebrates have not been reported previously. Flow cytometric analysis revealed 1-80% haploid red blood cells (RBCs) in the haploid-euploid chickens and 5-30% triploid RBCs in the diploid-triploids. Mosaic cell lines were also found in leukocytes and many tissues. The haploid-diploid chickens were all phenotypically normal and fertile, but the phenotype and fertility of the diploid-triploid chickens depended on their sex-chromosome complements and the ratio of diploid to triploid cells. The haploid cell lines are thought to originate from supernumerary spermatozoa, and the diploid-triploids from binucleated oocytes with meiotic errors. It is likely that genetic factors are partly responsible for the occurrence of these mosaic chickens.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted with chickens exposed to corticosterone (CORT), with the aim of determining its effects on bone characteristics. At 7 d of age, the experimental birds were injected daily with CORT (4 mg/kg of body mass) for 1 week. CORT administration significantly decreased the body weight while increasing relative liver weight of the chickens and the bone parameters were also decreased. Histology and immunohistochemistry of type X collagen revealed that CORT reduced the lengths of proliferative and prehypertrophic zone in growth plate and the number of positive chondrocytes in the prehypertrophic zone. In conclusion exposure to CORT depressed the growth performance and retarded the longitudinal growth of the long bones by inhibiting the proliferation and differentiation of chondrocytes in growth plate in broilers.  相似文献

Chickens weighing approx. 1500 g were fasted 64 hr and then continuously infused with [6-3H]glucose to determine effects of ethanol on plasma glucose concentrations and on rates of glucose turnover. Ethanol infusions (222 or 444 mumol/min X kg-1 body weight) did not cause hypoglycemia although the high dose infusion slightly decreased the rate of glucose turnover. Metabolite ratios measured in livers of chickens infused with the high dose of ethanol indicated that the hepatic cytosolic redox state was relatively unchanged. Chickens have an unusual resistance to ethanol-induced hypoglycemia.  相似文献

Activation and recovery sequences were mapped by means of 64-channel synchronous recording of extracellular potentials on ventricular epicardium in chickens. Ventricular epicardium was depolarized due to multiple breakthroughs. The recovery of ventricular epicardium occurs from the apex to the base of heart and does not repeat the activation sequence. Gradients of repolarisation exist over the ventricular epicardium in birds. Repolarisation pattern of ventricular epicardium depends primarily on intrinsic spatial heterogeneities of ARIs over epicardium.  相似文献

1. Studies were performed to examine the effects of progressive water deprivation in the fowl (Gallus domesticus). 2. A reduction in plasma volume and an increase in capillary permeability to protein were observed only after 3 or 4 days of dehydration. 3. Moderate changes in arterial blood pressure and heart rate were noted in dehydrated birds but respiratory rate and body temperature remained unchanged. 4. Dehydration was associated with increases in the concentration of total solutes, sodium and chloride in plasma but no changes were noted in plasma potassium levels or arterial pH. 5. The results indicate that the chicken can maintain volume more effectively during water deprivation than several mammalian species.  相似文献

The interaction of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and estrogen was studied in chickens to more clearly define this relationship in an avian species and its role in the enhanced sensitivity of female chickens to TCDD-induced wasting syndrome. Twenty male chickens (7-9 weeks old) were divided evenly into four groups: control (CTL, received the same volume of vehicle); estrogen-treated (E2, 1 mg/kg estradiol cypionate injections on days 1, 2 and 3); TCDD-treated (TCDD, single 50 microg/kg injection on day 4); and estrogen plus TCDD (E2+TCDD, as above), with measurements taken on day 14. The E2 group compared with the CTL group had decreased comb height (24%), comb length (26%) and adipose tissue (AT) lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity relative to AT mass (51%), while liver mass and body weight gain were each increased by 28%. The TCDD group had increased liver mass (62%), reduced comb length (17%), and reduced AT LPL activity indexed to AT mass (70%) compared with the CTL group. Finally, the E2+TCDD group had 37% lower body weight gain and 30% larger livers relative to body mass compared with the E2 group, but were not significantly different from the TCDD group. These data show that TCDD antagonized several effects of exogenous estrogen in male chickens, while estrogen enhanced TCDD toxicity in a tissue-specific manner.  相似文献

Tissue glucose transporter (GLUT1-3) and cationic amino acid transporter (CAT1-3) mRNA expression was determined in growing broiler chicks posthatch. In two experiments, tissues were either collected on days 1, 3 and 7 or days 1 and 14 posthatch. Heart and liver were the only tissues expressing a GLUT isoform on day 1. All tissues expressed a GLUT isoform on day 7 except for the thymus. Most tissues expressing a CAT isoform on day 1 decreased mRNA levels through day 7 (P<0.05), except for bursa CAT-1 which tended to increase (P=0.05). The thymus and spleen did not express any CAT isoform mRNA until day 7. The liver was the only tissue expressing GLUT-2 mRNA through day 14. On day 14, GLUT-1, CAT-1 and CAT-2 mRNA were differentially expressed across tissues (P<0.05). High-affinity GLUT and CAT mRNA expression was highest in the heart and bursa, respectively (P<0.05). Total CAT mRNA expression was greatest in the bursa (P<0.05). The thymus had the lowest high affinity GLUT and total CAT mRNA expression on day 14 posthatch. Therefore, T lymphocytes within the thymus may be most susceptible to glucose and cationic amino acid supply.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted with chickens exposed to corticosterone and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Escherichia coli, with the aim of evaluating and differentiating their effects on endocrine, metabolic and immune response. Both, corticosterone and LPS significantly elevated plasma corticosterone concentrations and increased heterophil to lymphocyte (H/L) ratios 1 h, 3 h and 24 h post-treatments. Repeated exposure to corticosterone caused a prolonged elevation of plasma corticosterone concentration and H/L ratio. Data on blood metabolites demonstrated that corticosterone stimulated hyperglycaemia, hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia. In contrast, LPS induced hypocholesterolemia and hypotriglyceridemia at 24 h post-injection. Weight gain and relative weight of the spleen and bursa were reduced in chickens treated with corticosterone. The LPS did not show any significant effect on weekly weight gain, but stimulated an increase in the relative weight of the spleen. Corticosterone initially stimulated antibody responsiveness to infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) vaccination, but thereafter the titres decreased. This was in contrast to LPS which depressed the antibody titre to IBV vaccination. It was concluded that the biological response of chickens induced by corticosterone could be differed from the response to LPS. The major difference occurred in metabolic, growth and immune activities. It appears that, both corticosterone and LPS differently alter physiological, metabolic and immunological responses of chickens through an activation of different molecular components (cytokines and chemokines) and neuroendocrine-immune network systems.  相似文献

Total lipid was extracted from chicken (Gallus domesticus) epidermis, leg scale, claws, feathers and preen glands and analyzed by quantitative thin-layer chromatography. All of the tissue lipids contained large proportions of wax diesters, triglycerides, and free sterols and variable proportions of phospholipids, steryl esters and free fatty acids. All of the keratinized tissues, but not the preen gland, contained ceramides, acylceramides and cholesteryl sulfate. Acylglucosylceramides were found only in full thickness epidermis. Glucosylsterols and acylglucosylsterols were found in the keratinized tissues, and may be of significance in the evolutionary history of the epidermal water barrier.  相似文献

1. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of insulin on urinary excretion and retention of the intravenously infused glutamine amide-15N in chickens. 2. Insulin pretreatment reduced urinary total 15N excretion (P less than 0.05) and enhanced 15N retention in chicken body (P less than 0.05), but it did not affect non protein-15N retained in the liver and blood. 3. Insulin decreased the incorporation of the infused glutamine amide-15N into urinary uric acid as well as the excretion of other N-derived urinary uric acid (P less than 0.05), which resulted in a significant decrease in total urinary uric acid (P less than 0.05). 4. There was no effect of insulin on urinary appearance of the infused glutamine amide-15N in the form of ammonia.  相似文献

To study the role of the skin in differential calcium metabolism in White Leghorn chickens, we compared the composition of suction blister fluid (SBF) collected from cutaneous blisters with blood and serum in female and male animals in various physiological states. As an estimate for interstitial fluid (IF), SBF was used as a determinant of local cutaneous metabolism. Sample collection was carried out under ketamine–xylazine anesthesia. Eight chickens of both sexes were raised freely in similar environmental conditions and fed with similar food during their growth from juvenile to sexually mature and fully adult state. SBF, blood and serum were examined for concentrations of ionized Ca2+, Na+ and K+ with ion-selective electrodes (ISEs), and osmolalities by freezing point osmometry. pH and total protein content were also assessed. Our results showed that SBF of chickens is calcium-poor at the juvenile state and that it draws more Ca2+ in adult males than laying females of the same age. Interestingly, Ca2+ accumulation was observed also in females after laying had ceased. There was a positive correlation between blood and SBF Ca2+ in females but a negative one in males. In general, it was found that SBF of chickens was rich in Na+ and K+, was hypertonic compared to serum at the juvenile state and had a protein content of 36–47% of that in serum. Different from mammals, SBF in adult chickens was alkaline with the mean values of 8.7 ± 0.14 in females and 8.8 ± 0.06 in males. Age- and sex-related variability in cutaneous Ca2+ concentrations in chickens, and the differences of SBF composition between that of mammals point to a novel role of skin functions in avians. Possible functions of the skin as a dynamic calcium source balancing the free circulating Ca2+ levels and, also, as an excretory organ for Ca2+ are discussed.  相似文献

This trial examined effects of lutein supplied from maternal (i.e., in ovo) and dietary routes on cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity responses in chickens. Chicks hatched from one of two in ovo carotenoid levels (n=100/level; carotenoid-replete or carotenoid-deplete eggs) were fed one of two diet lutein levels (0 or 40 mg diet lutein/kg diet). At 14 d post-hatch, phytohemagglutinin (PHA) was injected into the wing web, and thickness and leukocyte populations were measured at 0 to 48 h. PHA increased wing web thickness at 4 to 48 h post-PHA (p<0.05), and the swelling response was most related to macrophage numbers in the wing web. Swelling occurred more rapidly in chicks from carotenoid-deplete eggs (p<0.05), but eventually reached a greater thickness in chicks from carotenoid-replete eggs (p<0.05). Differences in leukocyte infiltration occurred due to diet and in ovo carotenoid exposure, and indicate that pre- and post-hatch carotenoid exposure had additive or synergistic effects on the PHA-induced wing web response. Evaluation of the cellular contents of the injection site is a much better indicator of the immunomodulatory effects of lutein than measurements of the amount of swelling.  相似文献
