Aplysia kurodai distributed along Japan feeds well on Ulva pertusa but rejects Gelidium amansii with distinctive patterned movements of the jaws and radula. On the ventral side of the cerebral M cluster, four cell bodies of higher order neurons that send axons to the buccal ganglia are distributed (CBM neurons). We have previously shown that the dopaminergic CBM 1 modulates basic feeding circuits in the buccal ganglia for rejection by firing at higher frequency after application of the aversive taste of seaweed such as Gelidium amansii. In the present experiments immunohistochemical techniques showed that the CBM 3 exhibited γ‐aminobutyric acid (GABA)‐like immunoreactivity. The CBM 3 may be equivalent to the CBI‐3 involved in changing the motor programs from rejection to ingestion in Aplysia californica. The responses of the CBM 3 to taste stimulation of the lips with seaweed extracts were investigated by the use of calcium imaging. The calcium‐sensitive dye, Calcium Green‐1, was iontophoretically introduced into a cell body of the CBM 3 using a microelectrode. Application of Ulva pertusa or Gelidium amansii extract induced different changes in fluorescence in the CBM 3 cell body, indicating that taste of Ulva pertusa initially induced longer‐lasting continuous spike responses at slightly higher frequency compared with that of Gelidium amansii. Considering a role of the CBM 3 in the pattern selection, these results suggest that elongation of the initial firing response may be a major factor for the CBM 3 to switch the buccal motor programs from rejection to ingestion after application of different tastes of seaweeds in Aplysia kurodai. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In situ and in vitro nitrate reductase (NR) activity assays designed for use in the field on Enteromorpha sp., Ulva sp., and Gelidium sp. are described. In optimizing each assay, a variety of compounds and assay conditions were tested for their ability to extract NR and preserve its activity. Enteromorpha sp. had similar levels of in vitro NR activity after exposure to the in situ assay buffer, demonstrating that neither NR induction nor activation likely occurs during the in situ assay. Storing freshly collected Enteromorpha sp. led to a reduction in NR activity over time. However, the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze algal tissue on site and subsequent storage at ?80° C preserved NR activity and allowed for later laboratory use of the optimized in vitro assay. Application of the in situ and in vitro assays to stands of Enteromorpha sp., Ulva sp., and Gelidium sp. in the field consistently found NR activity. In situ NR activity over 9 consecutive days in January demonstrated that Enteromorpha sp. responds to increases in nitrate availability. The influence of light on diel patterns of in vitro NR activity in the field was demonstrated for the first time as well. For the three species tested, these two assays provide a reliable tool for field investigation of the interaction between environmental signals (e.g. nutrient levels) and physiological signals (e.g. tissue metabolite levels) on nitrate reduction.  相似文献

The comparative functional anatomy of feeding in Polypterus senegalus, Lepisosteus oculatus, and Amia calva, three primitive actinopterygian fishes, was studied by high-speed cinematography (200 frames per second) synchronized with electromyographic recordings of cranial muscle activity. Several characters of the feeding mechanism have been identified as primitive for actinopterygian fishes: (1) Mandibular depression is mediated by the sternohyoideus muscle via the hyoid apparatus and mandibulohyoid ligament. (2) The obliquus inferioris and sternohyoideus muscles exhibit synchronous activity at the onset of the expansive phase of jaw movement. (3) Activity in the adductor operculi occurs in a double burst pattern—an initial burst at the onset of the expansive phase, followed by a burst after the jaws have closed. (4) A median septum divides the sternohyoideus muscle into right and left halves which are asymmetrically active during chewing and manipulation of prey. (5) Peak hyoid depression occurs only after peak gape has been reached and the hyoid apparatus remains depressed after the jaws have closed. (6) The neurocranium is elevated by the epaxial muscles during the expansive phase. (7) The adductor mandibulae complex is divided into three major sections—an anterior (suborbital) division, a medial division, and a posterolateral division. In Polypterus, the initial strike lasts from 60 to 125 msec, and no temporal overlap in muscle activity occurs between muscles active at the onset of the expansive phase (sternohyoideus, obliquus superioris, epaxial muscles) and the jaw adductors of the compressive phase. In Lepisosteus, the strike is extremely rapid, often occuring in as little as 20 msec. All cranial muscles become active within 10 msec of each other, and there is extensive overlap in muscle activity periods. Two biomechanically independent mechanisms mediate mandibular depression in Amia, and this duality in mouth-opening couplings is a shared feature of the halecostome fishes. Mandibular depression by hyoid retraction, and intermandibular musculature, consisting of an intermandibularis posterior and interhyoideus, are hypothesized to be primitive for the Teleostomi.  相似文献

Summary The rhythm in melatonin production in the rat is driven by a circadian rhythm in the pineal N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity. Rats adapted to an artificial lighting regime of 12 h of light and 12 h of darkness per day were exposed to an 8-h advance of the light-dark regime accomplished by the shortening of one dark period; the effect of melatonin, triazolam and fluoxetine, together with 5-hydroxytryptophan, on the reentrainment of the NAT rhythm was studied. In control rats, the NAT rhythm was abolished during the first 3 cycles following the advance shift. It reappeared during the 4th cycle; however, the phase relationship between the evening rise in activity and the morning decline was still compressed.Melatonin accelerated the NAT rhythm reentrainment. In rats treated chronically with melatonin at the new dark onset, the rhythm had already reappeared during the 3rd cycle, in the middle of the advanced night, and during the 4th cycle, the phase relationship between the evening onset and the morning decline of the NAT activity was the same as before the advance shift. In rats treated chronically with melatonin at the old dark onset or in those treated with melatonin 8 h, 5 h and 2 h after the new dark onset during the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle, respectively, following the advance shift, the NAT rhythm reappeared during the 3rd cycle as well but in the last third of the advanced night only.Neither triazolam nor fluoxetine together with 5-hydroxytryptophan administered around the new dark onset facilitated NAT rhythm reentrainment after the 8-h advance of the light-dark cycle.Abbreviations NAT N-acetyltransferase - LD cycle light-dark cycle - CT circadian time - LD xy light dark cycle comprising x h of light and y h of darkness  相似文献

Archosargus probatocephalusin a Florida estuary was investigated to explore intraspecific variation in prey utilization and jaw biomechanics. Volumetric contribution of major prey types and seven biomechanical features of the oral jaws that characterize prey-capture and processing performance were contrasted between two locations within the estuary. At Mosquito Lagoon, where A. probatocephalusinhabited mostly oyster beds, mangroves and salt marshes, fish consumed mostly thick-shelled bivalves, gastropods, crabs, and tubiculous polychaetes and amphipods. In contrast, conspecifics at Indian River Lagoon that inhabited mostly seagrass beds and algal turf consumed predominantly algae, seagrass, epiphytic invertebrates and small bivalves and gastropods. Difference in magnitude of durophagy between locations was associated with differences in oral-jaw biomechanics. Analyses of covariance indicated that A. probatocephalusat Mosquito Lagoon had more massive jaw muscles and bones, than conspecifics at Indian River Lagoon. Variations in lever ratios for jaw-opening and jaw-closing between locations were not significant. It is hypothesized that intralocality differences in food habits have induced the development of feeding morphologies that enhance the ability of A. probatocephalusto successfully exploit locally dominant prey resources within the estuary. Plasticity of the feeding mechanism of A. probatocephalusmay buffer the species from the adverse effects of settling on heterogeneous habitats that contain variable prey resources such as those found within estuaries.  相似文献

Species of the genus Ulva (Chlorophyta) are regarded as opportunistic organisms, which efficiently adjust their metabolism to the prevailing environmental conditions. In this study, changes in chlorophyll‐a fluorescence‐based photoinhibition of photosynthesis, electron transport rates, photosynthetic pigments, lipid peroxidation, total phenolic compounds, and antioxidant metabolism were investigated during a diurnal cycle of natural solar radiation in summer (for 12 h) under two treatments: photosynthetically active radiation (PAR: 400–700 nm) and PAR+ ultraviolet (UV) radiation (280–700 nm). In the presence of PAR alone, Ulva rigida showed dynamic photoinhibition, and photosynthetic parameters and pigment concentrations decreased with the intensification of the radiation. On the other hand, under PAR+UV conditions a substantial decline up to 43% was detected and an incomplete fluorescence recovery, also, P‐I curve values remained low in relation to the initial condition. The phenolic compounds increased their concentration only in UV radiation treatments without showing a correlation with the antioxidant activity. The enzimatic activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) increased over 2‐fold respect at initial values during the onset of light intensity. In contrast, catalase (CAT) increased its activity rapidly in response to the radiation stress to reach maxima at 10 a.m. and decreasing during solar. The present study suggests that U. rigida is capable of acclimating to natural radiation stress relies on a concerted action of various physiological mechanisms that act at different times of the day and under different levels of environmental stress.  相似文献

  1. We have studied the neural circuitry mediating ingestion and rejection in Aplysia using a reduced preparation that produces ingestion-like and rejection-like motor patterns in response to physiological stimuli.
  2. We have characterized 3 buccal ganglion motor neurons that produce specific movements of the radula and buccal mass. B8a and B8b act to close the radula. B10 acts to close the jaws and retract the radula.
  3. The patterns of activity in these neurons can be used to distinguish the ingestion-like and rejection-like motor patterns. B8a, B8b and B10 are active together during the ingestion-like pattern. Activity in B8a and B8b ends prior to the onset of activity in B10 during the rejection-like pattern.
  4. Our data suggest that these neurons undergo similar patterns of activity in vivo. During both feeding-like patterns, the activity and peripheral actions of B8a, B8b, and B10 are consistent with radula movements observed during ingestion and rejection. In addition, the extracellular activity produced by these neurons is consistent with neural activity observed in vivo during ingestion and rejection.
  5. Our data suggest that the different activity patterns observed in these motor neurons contribute to the different radula movements that distinguish ingestion from rejection.

Blade cells of Ulva mutabilis Føyn (Chlorophyta) excrete regulatory factors into their cell walls and into the environment. These factors are essential for the maintenance of the vegetative state. “Sporulation inhibitor-1a” (SI-1a) is a glycoprotein that was isolated from the culture medium of axenic Ulva growing as an undifferentiated callus. This protein was unusually stable to denaturing treatments and showed an extremely high apparent molecular mass (Mr) of 1–4 × 107 daltons estimated by size exclusion chromatography. The glycosylation was not essential for activity. SI-1a suppressed gametogenesis completely at concentrations lower than 10?14 M. When Ulva developed normally in the presence of their symbiotic bacteria, smaller forms of SI-1 accumulated in the medium (104–106 daltons). Sporulation inhibitors of the same size spectrum and with similar properties were also extracted from crude cell walls of nonaxenic Ulva. A class of different nonprotein sporulation inhibitors (SI-2) of very low Mr and yet unknown structure was isolated from the inner space between the two blade cell layers. Excretion of all SI-1 forms decreased with maturation of the thallus, whereas the overall concentration of SI-2 in the thallus stayed constant throughout the life cycle. The SI-2 affected different Ulva species whereas SI-1 was species-specific. Gametogenesis was induced upon removal of both Sporulation inhibitors from small single-layered fragments of mature blades. After a “determination phase” of 23–46 h, dependent on the time of induction within the cell cycle, the cells became irreversibly committed to differentiation and were no longer susceptible to SI-1 or SI-2. Subsequently, during a 28-h “differentiation phase,” 16 progametes were formed by synchronous genome doublings and cell divisions and differentiated into mature gametes. These became motile and were released from the gametangia when the concentration of a “swarming inhibitor” of low Mr, excreted mainly during the “determination phase,” declined below a threshold concentration. The biochemical properties of these regulatory factors and their effects on gametogenesis and gamete release are described.  相似文献

Growth patterns and bloom formation of the green seaweed Ulva rigida were analysed in the eutrophic Sacca di Goro lagoon (Po River Delta, Italy). Variations of standing biomasses and elemental composition of Ulva were analysed through an annual cycle with respect to nitrogen, phosphorus and iron. Growth rates, nutrient and iron uptake and nitrate storage by macroalgal thalli were also assessed with field experiments during the formation of a spring bloom. The control of Ulva growth and the bloom formation depended on multiple factors, especially on nitrogen availability and iron deficiency. In the nitrate rich waters of the Sacca di Goro lagoon, nitrate accumulation in Ulva thalli was inversely related with Fe uptake, indicating an influence of Fe limitation on N acquisition. Since length and magnitude of nitrate luxury uptake are inversely related to the size of the intracellular nitrate pools, in nitrate rich waters the fast growing Ulva may face risk of N-limitation not only when exposed to low N concentrations or at high biomass levels, but also when exposed to pulsed dissolved nitrate concentrations at low iron availability. The potential Fe limitation could be affected by processes controlled by geochemical reactions and by macroalgal growth and decomposition. Both Fe oxidation during the active macroalgal growth and the formation of insoluble FeS and FeS2 during bloom collapse can result in a drastic decrease of soluble iron. Thus, a potential limitation of Fe to macroalgae can occur, determining positive feedbacks and potentially controlling the extent of bloom development and persistence.  相似文献

This study assessed whether the abundance of girellids and kyphosids was related to cover of the palatable green algae, Ulva australis and Ulva compressa, on rocky intertidal reefs in Jervis Bay, New South Wales, Australia. No relationship was found between Ulva spp. cover and abundance of Girella tricuspidata, Girella elevata and Kyphosus sydneyanus during a period of relatively low Ulva spp. cover (i.e. February 2011 to March 2011), but during a period of significantly higher Ulva spp. cover (i.e. October 2011 to November 2011) there was a strong correlation between Ulva spp. cover and G. tricuspidata abundance. Spatial analysis indicated that the abundance of G. tricuspidata was consistent across time, suggesting G. tricuspidata were not moving between reefs in response to variation in Ulva spp. cover between periods but rather that large schools of G. tricuspidata resided on reefs that had relatively higher Ulva spp. cover at certain times of the year.  相似文献

Summary Bouts of induced wheel-running, 3 h long, accelerate the rate of re-entrainment of hamsters' activity rhythms to light-dark (LD) cycles that have been phase-advanced by 8 h (Mrosovsky and Salmon 1987). The bouts of running are given early in the first night of the new LD cycle, and by the second night the phase advance in activity onset already averages 7 h. Such large shifts contrast with the mean phase advance of <1 h at the peak of the phase response curve when hamsters in constant darkness (DD) experience 2-h pulses of induced activity (Reebs and Mrosovsky 1989). The present paper investigates pulse duration and light as possible causes for the discrepancy in shift amplitude between these two studies. In a first experiment, pulses of induced wheel-running 1 h, 3 h, or 5 h long were given at circadian times (CT) 6 and 22-2 to hamsters free-running in DD. Pulses given at CT 6 caused phase-advances of up to 2.8 h, whereas pulses at CT 22-2 resulted in delays of up to 1.0 h. Shifts after 3-h and 5-h pulses did not differ, but were larger than after 1-h pulses, and larger than after the 2-h pulses given in DD by Reebs and Mrosovsky (1989). Thus 3 h appears to be the minimum pulse duration necessary to obtain maximum phase-shifting effects. In a second experiment, the re-entrainment design of Mrosovsky and Salmon (1987) was repeated with the light portion of the shifted LD cycle eliminated. Hamsters exercised for 3 h phase-advanced 2.9 h on average (excluding 2 animals who ran poorly). When the same hamsters were exposed 7 days later to a 14-h light pulse starting 5 h after their activity onset, they advanced by an average of 3.3 h. Adding the average values for activity-induced shifts and light-induced shifts gives a total of about 6 h. Possible synergism between the effects of induced activity and those of light may account for the remaining small difference between this total and the 7-h advances previously reported.Abbreviations CT circadian time - DD constant darkness - LD light-dark - PRC phase response curve - free-running period of rhythm  相似文献

In Paracas Bay (Peru), large quantities of Ulva sp. interfere with various important activities of the zone. In this context, the present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of adding Ulva sp. in compost piles and the quality of the resulting composts. Six compost piles were prepared using, straw, green material mixture, cow manure and Ulva in different quantities (9, 17 and 28% of volume) and forms. Several variables were monitored during the process and the chemical characteristics of the final composts were determined. Aerial biomass achieved by maize plants was also evaluated for each compost at different compost/sand proportions. Results show that the compost pile made with Ulva powder registered the highest temperature and the longest thermophilic phase. Piles prepared with 28% washed Ulvapresented anoxic conditions at the beginning and had higher electrical conductivity values. Carbon/Nitrogen ratio diminished appropriately in all piles and there was no negative effect observed on the pH of the piles. Compost prepared with Ulva had lower contents of Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen, and produced maize plants aerial biomass.  相似文献

The daily activity of some predators is correlated with the activity pattern of their prey. If capture efficiency varies as a function of prey activity, a predator that synchronizes its foraging activity with the time of day that prey are most vulnerable should capture more prey, and at lower cost, than a predator that initiates foraging at random. Mink, Mustela vison, and weasels, M. erminea and M. nivalis, were presented with an opportunity to maximize their intake in similar circumstances in the laboratory. An animal's ability to synchronize its foraging activity with the time of day when food was most available was tested. Energy costs (wheel revolutions) were varied to encourage an animal to redistribute its activity from a preferred 12-h phase of the light-dark cycle to the other phase, and then back again. The degree to which activity changed to coincide with the most economical phase was analysed for each individual, and weasels were compared to mink. The activity of six (of seven) animals shifted in response to modified foraging costs, but only two animals (both mink) approached the 180° redistribution of activity expected of an energy-maximizing forager. In general, all animals were active during a favoured phase (usually dark) of the light-dark cycle and relatively large variations in foraging cost during this cycle had only modest effects on activity.  相似文献

Marine foliaceous green macroalgae such as Ulva lose their typical morphology when cultured aseptically in defined synthetic media. However, after reinfection by certain marine bacteria (isolated from unialgal cultures of Ulva pertusa Kjellman), the organisms regain their typical foliaceous or tubular morphology. To investigate the morphogenesis (MG) induced in U. pertusa by bacteria, we isolated and identified bacteria with MG activity on U. pertusa and studied the distribution of such bacteria in seawater and on various marine macroalgae. We isolated 1555 bacterial strains from 18 species of marine macroalgae (six Chlorophyta, five Phaeophyta, and seven Rhodophyta), from seawater and from sediment collected at the beach at Omaezaki, Shizuoka Prefecture; Japan. Of these, 676 bacterial strains (43.5%) showed MG activity. They were classified into six bacterial groups, Flavobacterium, Vibrio, Pseudomonas, Deleya, Escherichia, and gram-positive cocci. These bacteria were ubiquitous among the samples and were not specific to U. pertusa. Several plant growth regulators had no MG activity. Filter-sterilized supernatants of culture media of MG-active bacteria strains did not induce MG. Cocultivation of Ulva with active bacterial strains is so far the only way to induce the MG effect, which suggests that for MG direct contact between Ulva and the bacterial strain is necessary.  相似文献

Summary Behavioral aspects of photoentrainment of circadian locomotor activity rhythms were recorded for a nocturnal den-dwelling rodent, the flying squirrel,Glaucomys volans. Methods included both telemetric monitoring and infrared observations of animals under constant dark (DD) or light-dark (LD) schedules in either standard wheel cages or in newly developed simulated den cages. By means of the den cages, several aspects of a circadian activity cycle could be simultaneously measured emphasizing the arousal from rest, the light-sampling behavior by which a squirrel assessed the environmental photoregimen, and the phase-shifting by which photoentrainment was achieved. Each animal in a den cage remained for 12 or more hours of its rest period almost exclusively in the darkened nest box, then at an abrupt arousal time moved to the light-sampling porthole. In darkness each animal initiated wheel activity immediately after arousal; light at arousal time, however, induced a return to the nest box for a nap and a delay phase-shift in onset of activity of approximately 40 min. On subsequent days, each animal appeared to be free-running ( FR< 24 h) until onset again advanced into the light period. A squirrel usually viewed only a few minutes light per day, and on free-running days occasionally saw none of the 12-h light period. The significance of these data for theories of circadian photoentrainment is discussed.Abbreviations CT circadian time - PRC phase response curve - SCN suprachiasmatic nucleus  相似文献

Green seaweeds exhibit a wide range of morphologies and occupy various ecological niches, spanning from freshwater to marine and terrestrial habitats. These organisms, which predominantly belong to the class Ulvophyceae, showcase a remarkable instance of parallel evolution toward complex multicellularity and macroscopic thalli in the Viridiplantae lineage. Within the green seaweeds, several Ulva species (“sea lettuce”) are model organisms for studying carbon assimilation, interactions with bacteria, life cycle progression, and morphogenesis. Ulva species are also notorious for their fast growth and capacity to dominate nutrient-rich, anthropogenically disturbed coastal ecosystems during “green tide” blooms. From an economic perspective, Ulva has garnered increasing attention as a promising feedstock for the production of food, feed, and biobased products, also as a means of removing excess nutrients from the environment. We propose that Ulva is poised to further develop as a model in green seaweed research. In this perspective, we focus explicitly on Ulva mutabilis/compressa as a model species and highlight the molecular data and tools that are currently available or in development. We discuss several areas that will benefit from future research or where exciting new developments have been reported in other Ulva species.  相似文献

Summary

The gametogenic response of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus was compared under treatments of different photoperiod regimes of fixed and seasonal changing daylength. Quantification of gametogenic activity in en- zymatically dissagregated ovaries and in histological sections of testes have shown that the sea urchin is sensitive to both fixed and variable daylengths. After one year at fixed short day (8L:16D) or fixed neutral day (12L:12D) the gonads were ripe and in active gametogenesis, the same as were gonads of animals reared at changing photoperiod and sampled during the short-day phase of the cycle. Under fixed long day (16L:8D) the gonads lacked significant amount of gametes and had the cell constitution found in gonads of animals reared at changing photoperiod and sampled during the long-day phase of the cycle. Measurement of a critical daylength related to the autumnal equinox seems to be part of the mechanism in the photoperiodic regulation of vitellogenic oocyte growth and spermatogenesis in these animals.  相似文献

Field catches of Eurydice pulchra (Leach) from an Isle of Man beach indicated that adult animals were active in the water column solely during spring tide periods, whereas juvenile animals swam abundantly at high tide irrespective of lunar phase. Under constant conditions in the laboratory, animals kept in actographs with sand showed a circa-tidal rhythm of spontaneous emergence and swimming activity. In adults, the activity was greatest during “expected” night-time high-waters and was expressed solely after collection during spring tide periods. The rhythm was independent of sex, season or reproductive status. Juveniles showed no such diurnal modulation of the rhythm and the pattern was expressed throughout the semi-lunar cycle. These ontogenetic differences in behaviour are discussed in the light of previous work on the rhythm, and in terms of the differing habits of the mature and immature animals.  相似文献

Light exposure during the early and late subjective night generally phase delays and advances circadian rhythms, respectively. However, this generality was recently questioned in a photic entrainment study in Octodon degus. Because degus can invert their activity phase preference from diurnal to nocturnal as a function of activity level, assessment of phase preference is critical for computations of phase reference [circadian time (CT) 0] toward the development of a photic phase response curve. After determining activity phase preference in a 24-h light-dark cycle (LD 12:12), degus were released in constant darkness. In this study, diurnal (n = 5) and nocturnal (n = 7) degus were randomly subjected to 1-h light pulses (30-35 lx) at many circadian phases (CT 1-6: n = 7; CT 7-12: n = 8; CT 13-18: n = 8; and CT 19-24: n = 7). The circadian phase of body temperature (Tb) onset was defined as CT 12 in nocturnal animals. In diurnal animals, CT 0 was determined as Tb onset + 1 h. Light phase delayed and advanced circadian rhythms when delivered during the early (CT 13-16) and late (CT 20-23) subjective night, respectively. No significant phase shifts were observed during the middle of the subjective day (CT 3-10). Thus, regardless of activity phase preference, photic entrainment of the circadian pacemaker in Octodon degus is similar to most other diurnal and nocturnal species, suggesting that entrainment mechanisms do not determine overt diurnal and nocturnal behavior.  相似文献

The primary production of Ulva populations relies on their photosynthetic performance, which is dependent on the light availability under natural conditions. This study concerns the light attenuation characteristics in Ulva canopies and the seasonal photosynthetic performance of two different species (Ulva rotundata Blid., Ulva curvata (Kütz.) De Toni) blooming in the Palmones river estuary. Light within canopies differed from that reaching the surface. Light availability was reduced through the water column (at high tide) and Ulva canopies. In addition, light was spectrally filtered. As a result, the photosynthetically usable radiation (PUR) was further attenuated through Ulva canopies, increasing the photosynthetically active radiation/PUR ratio. The muddy sediment deposited on and between the Ulva thalli also drastically restricted the light availability. Thick Ulva mats are frequently found covering the intertidal mudflats, and therefore, thalli within these mats may be subjected to steep light gradients. As a consequence, individual Ulva growth rates cannot be extrapolated to estimate the primary production of Ulva canopies. Interspecific differences were observed for light-saturated photosynthetic rates (Pmax) and light compensation points (LCP), with Ulva curvata generally displaying higher values than did U. rotundata. For both species, maxima were recorded in winter for Pmax, quantum yield, chlorophyll content, and absorptance, whereas minima were found in summer. Dark respiration (Rd) was not seasonally affected, and a maximum LCP was found in summer. To extrapolate these data to field situations, the temperature dependence of photosynthesis should be considered. The Q10 values were 2.44 for Rd and 1.79 for Pmax, whereas the photosynthesis rate at subsaturating light levels was unaffected. The Q10 values showed an enhanced respiratory rate in summer and a minimum in winter, whereas the seasonal differences on Pmax were damped.  相似文献
