Aim  To test for patterns in the assembly of an island plant community.
Location  Islands off the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
Methods  Twenty-seven islands were visited by boat, and the abundance of six woody angiosperm species was quantified. Null models were then used to test whether: (1) some species co-occur less than expected by chance (i.e. co-occurrence assembly rule), (2) the incidence and abundance of some species are inversely related to the abundance of other species (i.e. incidence assembly rule), and (3) support for assembly rules precludes evidence for nestedness, which refers to a pattern in species composition in which the species present on depauperate islands form regular subsets of those occurring on progressively more diverse islands.
Results  Most species co-occurred with other species at frequencies expected by chance. However, one species ( Sambucus racemosa ) co-occurred with other species less frequently than randomized expectations. The observed incidence and abundance patterns of most species were also consistent with randomized patterns. However, the incidence and abundance of S. racemosa declined with the abundance of other plant species. Weak, variable support was found for nestedness of the total plant community. However, stronger, consistent support was found after removing S. racemosa from the matrix prior to analyses.
Main conclusions  Most species were assembled on islands in a manner consistent with randomized expectations. However, non-random distributional patterns were observed in one species whose distribution was consistent with the hypothesis that competition limits the assembly of island communities.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The butterfly Melitaea cinxia uses two host plant species in the Åland Islands of south-west Finland. Survey data show that host plant use is spatially variable and that the two species are not used (fed on by M . cinxia larvae) in proportion to their abundances. The pattern of host plant use by M . cinxia has been attributed in part to plant distribution and spatial variation of butterfly oviposition preference.
2. The additional roles that may be played by spatial variation in host plant quality and larval physiology (performance ability) were investigated. Seven years of field survey data and a series of laboratory experiments were used to demonstrate that neither of these variables contributed measurably to the observed pattern of host plant use.
3. Specifically, while there was great variation among individuals in both the performance ability of caterpillars and host plant suitability, the two plant species appeared equally suitable, there was no within-species geographic variation in plant suitability, and there was no evidence for adaptation of caterpillars to the locally used host plants.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The enormous diversity of phytophagous insects in forest canopies is hypothesised to be supported by the number of herbivorous species per host tree species or host specificity. It is therefore necessary to examine the effect of host plant species on compositional changes in the herbivore communities.
2. The lepidopteran larval communities were examined in the canopies of 10 tree species in a temperate deciduous forest of Japan. The phylogeny and leaf flush phenology of host plant species were taken into account as factors affecting the herbivore community assembly.
3. Examination of seasonal changes in the larval community structures on each tree species showed that larval species richness, abundance, and evenness decreased significantly from spring to summer. Larval species richness and abundance were characterised by family-level phylogenetic differences among tree species, whereas evenness was determined at a higher taxonomic level.
4. Compositional changes in the larval communities among tree species showed a remarkable pattern, with a phylogenetic effect at a high taxonomic level in spring, similar to evenness, but a phenological effect in summer. This suggests that host specificity could support the lepidopteran larval diversity in spring.
5. These results suggest that the differences in host utilisation of the herbivore, which reflects the phylogenetic effect of the host plants, can be important as a factor affecting the diversity of lepidopteran larval communities in temperate forests.  相似文献

Mechanisms of plant species impacts on ecosystem nitrogen cycling   总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16  
Plant species are hypothesized to impact ecosystem nitrogen cycling in two distinctly different ways. First, differences in nitrogen use efficiency can lead to positive feedbacks on the rate of nitrogen cycling. Alternatively, plant species can also control the inputs and losses of nitrogen from ecosystems. Our current understanding of litter decomposition shows that most nitrogen present within litter is not released during decomposition but incorporated into soil organic matter. This nitrogen retention is caused by an increase in the relative nitrogen content in decomposing litter and a much lower carbon‐to‐nitrogen ratio of soil organic matter. The long time lag between plant litter formation and the actual release of nitrogen from the litter results in a bottleneck, which prevents feedbacks of plant quality differences on nitrogen cycling. Instead, rates of gross nitrogen mineralization, which are often an order of magnitude higher than net mineralization, indicate that nitrogen cycling within ecosystems is dominated by a microbial nitrogen loop. Nitrogen is released from the soil organic matter and incorporated into microbial biomass. Upon their death, the nitrogen is again incorporated into the soil organic matter. However, this microbial nitrogen loop is driven by plant‐supplied carbon and provides a strong negative feedback through nitrogen cycling on plant productivity. Evidence supporting this hypothesis is strong for temperate grassland ecosystems. For other terrestrial ecosystems, such as forests, tropical and boreal regions, the data are much more limited. Thus, current evidence does not support the view that differences in the efficiency of plant nitrogen use lead to positive feedbacks. In contrast, soil microbes are the dominant factor structuring ecosystem nitrogen cycling. Soil microbes derive nitrogen from the decomposition of soil organic matter, but this microbial activity is driven by recent plant carbon inputs. Changes in plant carbon inputs, resulting from plant species shifts, lead to a negative feedback through microbial nitrogen immobilization. In contrast, there is abundant evidence that plant species impact nitrogen inputs and losses, such as: atmospheric deposition, fire‐induced losses, nitrogen leaching, and nitrogen fixation, which is driven by carbon supply from plants to nitrogen fixers. Additionally, plants can influence the activity and composition of soil microbial communities, which has the potential to lead to differences in nitrification, denitrification and trace nitrogen gas losses. Plant species also impact herbivore behaviour and thereby have the potential to lead to animal‐facilitated movement of nitrogen between ecosystems. Thus, current evidence supports the view that plant species can have large impacts on ecosystem nitrogen cycling. However, species impacts are not caused by differences in plant quantity and quality, but by plant species impacts on nitrogen inputs and losses.  相似文献

The metabolism of parathion to para-nitrophenol (PNP) in redfish (Sciaenops ocellata) liver microsomes has been both identified and characterized. This mixed-function oxidase (MFO) reaction in redfish requires NADPH and is inhibited by carbon monoxide. It exhibits a temperature optimum of 25 degrees C but no clear pH optimum between 7.0-8.5. Redfish hepatic microsomal MFOs were not induced by 2.5 days after a single i.p. injection of 88 mg Aroclor 1254/kg body wt, but under the same dosage and time conditions male albino Swiss mice were significantly induced (p less than 0.05).  相似文献

Some populations of Anopheles gambiae s.l. from Cameroon were reported to develop resistance to DDT or pyrethroids but were free of the kdr mutation "Leucine-Phenylalanine" (Leu-Phe). This study reports on the metabolic activity of non-specific esterases (NSEs), mixed function oxidases (MFOs), and glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), three enzyme systems commonly involved in insecticide resistance. Biochemical assays were performed in DDT or pyrethroid-resistant populations of An. gambiae s.l. from Douala, Mbalmayo, Pitoa, and Simatou neighborhoods. Enzyme activity was compared to the Kisumu-susceptible reference strain using the Mann-Whitney test. Most of the tested samples had elevated NSE activity (P < 0.02). The Douala sample evenly displayed elevated GST activity (P < 0.001), while high MFO level was recorded in the Pitoa sample (P < 0.001). MFO or GST levels were sometimes lower or similar to that of the Kisumu strain. These results suggest metabolic detoxification is a major DDT or pyrethroid resistance mechanism and emphasize the need for further investigations on An. gambiae s.l. resistance mechanisms in Cameroon.  相似文献

The in vitro cellular functions of differentiated cells are influenced by culture conditions. Effects of several extracellular matrices (ECMs) on cytochrome P450-dependent monooxygenases (MFOs) induction and cytochrome P4501A1 (CYP1A1) gene expression were estimated in Hep G2 cells cultured in a serum-free medium. The cells were cultured on collagen type I- and II-, fibronectin-, and matrigel-coated dishes and MFO activities were induced by the addition of 3-methylcholanthrene (MC). The induction of ethoxycoumarin O-deethylase (ECOD) and alkoxyresorufin O-dealkylase activities as well as the expression of CYP1A1 mRNA were also determined. ECOD and methoxy- and ethoxyresorufin O-dealkylase activities in Hep G2 cells were enhanced by culturing the cells using a serum-free medium on fibronectin- or matrigel-coated dishes. ECOD activity on fibronectin-coated dishes was about 3-fold higher than that using a serum-supplemented medium on untreated dishes. Furthermore, both immobilized and soluble fibronectin enhanced the induction of MFOs. The expression of CYP1A1 mRNA using fibronectin-coated dishes was about 2-fold higher than that using a serum-supplemented medium on untreated dishes. These findings suggest that the gene expression in cultured cells is greatly influenced by ECMs. By using fibronectin-coated dishes to cell culture in a serum-free medium, reproducible and highly sensitive results can be obtained in experiments using cultured cells. 1. Winged morph production in aphids is a phenotypic trait that has traditionally been seen as a response to unfavourable environmental conditions. The evidence to support this theory is reviewed and the ecological and evolutionary significance of the findings is discussed. 2. The common assertion of poor host‐plant nutritional quality leading to increased production of winged morphs does not always apply, particularly when the host‐plant quality is exceptionally poor. The available data are skewed heavily towards Myzus persicae, and for this species the dynamical change in plant quality appears to be important with respect to wing induction. 3. Crowding may be a less influential stimulus for wing induction as study methods approach natural conditions experienced by aphids on their host plant. 4. The growing evidence that interactions with other organisms can induce the production of winged morphs by aphid colonies is reviewed. In the case of natural enemies, such a response by an aphid colony may be regarded as induced defence. Wing induction may also act as a means of transmission for a virus or fungal pathogen.  相似文献

Aim  Successful invaders often possess similar ecological traits that contribute to success in new regions, and thus under niche conservatism, invader success should be phylogenetically clustered. We asked if the degree to which non-native plant species are phylogenetically related is a predictor of invasion success at two spatial scales.
Location  Australia – the whole continent and Royal National Park (south-eastern Australia).
Methods  We used non-native plant species occupancy in Royal National Park, as well as estimated continental occupancy of these species from herbarium records. We then estimated phylogenetic relationships using molecular data from three gene sequences available on GenBank ( matK , rbcL and ITS1 ). We tested for phylogenetic signals in occupancy using Blomberg's K .
Results  Whereas most non-native plants were relatively scarce, there was a strong phylogenetic signal for continental occupancy, driven by the clustering of successful species in Asteraceae, Caryophyllaceae, Poaceae and Solanaceae. However, we failed to detect a phylogenetic signal at the park scale.
Main Conclusions  Our results reveal that at a large spatial scale, invader success is phylogenetically clustered where ecological traits promoting success appear to be shared among close relatives, indicating that phylogenetic relationships can be useful predictors of invasion success at large spatial scales. At a smaller, landscape scale, there was no evidence of phylogenetic clustering of invasion success, and thus, relatedness plays a much reduced role in determining the relative success of invaders.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. 1. Host plant relations of closely related species and pseudogamous triploid forms of the planthopper genus Ribautodelphax were studied.
2. From field data and experimental results it is concluded that eleven European Ribautodelphax species and undescribed taxa are monophagous or oligophagous on different grass species. Only two Ribautodelphax species are found on the same grass species in the field.
3. Differential host plant relations indicate that four recently discovered taxa are probably true species.
4. Ribautodelphax species show a more restricted host plant range in choice experiments compared with breeding tests.
5. Choice experiments indicate no differences in host plant preference between males and females of two Ribautodelphax species.
6. No differences are found in host plant relations between bisexual species and associated pseudogamous triploid forms.  相似文献

1. The osmoregulatory strategies of crocodilians in both saline and fresh-water environments are discussed and dissected into their separate components.
2. Contrasts between members of the Alligatoridae and the Crocodylinae emerge repeatedly in aspects such as integumental permeabilities, functioning of the renal/cloacal system, and the presence of lingual salt-secreting glands.
3. These contrasts contribute to the view that the alligatorid and crocodyline stocks are more divergent than has been suspected previously. In particular, there is cogent evidence of a significant marine phase in the evolution of the Crocodylinae but not of the Alligatoridae.
4. The physiological evidence to support this view of a very basic dichotomy among the eusuchians is reviewed in detail and avenues which would contribute most to its critical evaluation are identified.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Previous studies have demonstrated that phenotypic traits of plants have the potential to affect interactions between herbivores and their natural enemies. Consequently, the impact of natural enemies on herbivore vital rates and population dynamics may vary among plant species. This study was designed to investigate the potential for density-dependent parasitism of an aphid herbivore feeding on six different host plant species.
2. Population densities of the aphid Aphis nerii B de F (Homoptera: Aphididae) and its parasitoid Lysiphlebus testaceipes Cresson (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) were recorded within a single growing season on six different species of milkweed in the genus Asclepias L. (Asclepiadaceae). Asclepias species are known to vary in their quality as food for herbivores. Although data on plant quality were not available in this study, population data were analysed to determine the effects of different Asclepias species on rates of parasitism and aphid population growth.
3. Parasitism rates of A. nerii varied among Asclepias species but were temporally density dependent over at least some range of aphid density on all plant species. Aphid population growth rates also varied among Asclepias species, and declined with an increase in the maximum parasitism rates among plant species; however, in no case was density-dependent parasitism sufficient to prevent exponential population growth of aphids within the growing season. The results serve to emphasise that, if natural enemies are to regulate herbivore populations, density-dependent mortality is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for regulation.  相似文献

In many semi-natural and natural ecosystems, mycorrhizal fungi are the most abundant and functionally important group of soil micro-organisms. They are almost wholly dependent on their host plants to supply them with photosynthate in return for which they enable the plant to access greater quantities of nutrients. Thus, there is considerable potential for plant communities to regulate the structure and function of mycorrhizal communities. This paper reviews some of the key recent developments that have enabled the influence of plant species richness, composition, and age on mycorrhizal communities in boreal forests and temperate grassland to be determined. It discusses the emerging evidence that, in some situations, plant species richness is related to mycorrhizal species richness, in contrast to previous thinking. The paper also includes some preliminary data on the effect of host stand age on root-associated basidiomycete communities. It concludes by highlighting some of the new methodological advances that promise to unravel the linkages between mycorrhizal diversity and their function in situ.  相似文献

Metapopulations of moths on islands: a test of two contrasting models   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. We describe a generalized mainland-island metapopulation model which includes migration among the island populations. We test model predictions with quantitative data on more than 200 species of moths in two contrasting networks of small islands. The data include a direct measure of migration rate, based on trapping of moths on rocky skerries with no local populations of the vast majority of species.
2. We predicted that moths which are strong fliers but uncommon on the islands have a higher incidence on scattered islands than on islands in a group, because the latter 'compete' for immigrants from the mainland. In contrast, we predicted that weakly flying species with potentially large local populations on the islands occur more frequently on islands in a group due to enhanced colonization rate.
3. Both predicted patterns were observed. Island occupancy increased significantly with the number of individuals caught on the rocky skerries, which is our measure of migration rate from the mainland, supporting the basic assumption that the species occur on the islands in a balance between colonizations and extinctions.
4. These results demonstrate that the moth metapopulations on islands represent a mixture of Levins's and mainland-island metapopulations, and that the mixture is different for different species in the same landscape.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Field and published data reveal that there are at least twenty-three species of phytophagous insects associated with Prunus padus L. in Britain. Most of these species occur on the tree between May and September. Interspecific competition does not appear to be severe.
2. There are a total of 196 species of phytophagous insects feeding upon the various tissues of P. avium, P. cerasifera, P. cerasus, P. domestica, P. laurocerasus, P. padus and P. spinosa.
3. A highly significant species (5)-distribution (A) relationship of the form In (S+l)=0.92 In A-2.19, was obtained for the Prunus species examined within Britain (excluding Ireland), i.e. the wider the distribution of the plant the greater the number of insect species associated with it.
4. However, critical analysis of the data indicate that P. padus does not support as many different insect species as expected.
5. Neither plant form nor age of establishment within the British Isles accounted for this discrepancy.
6. The possibility of using a plant's insect fauna to describe its relationship to other plants in the same genus is discussed.  相似文献

INTRASPECIFIC NEST PARASITISM IN BIRDS   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
(1) The incidence of intraspecific nest parasitism in birds is reviewed. This phenomenon can be identified by various methods, ranging from biochemical examination of protein and enzyme polymorphisms to observations on the sequence of appearance of eggs in the nest as well as on the shape and colour of the eggs. The phenomenon has been reported for at least 53 species (Table I), mostly among precocial birds.
(2) The evidence suggests that the parasites are ( a ) young, unmated birds, ( b ) females which have lost their nests and (c) mated females which also lay in the nests of other females. High proportions of such females, and scarcity of suitable nest sites increase the rate of parasitism.
(3) Breeding success in parasitized nests is reduced by factors such as egg loss, desertion, inefficient incubation, reduced clutch size and late layings. The upper limit of the rate of intraspecific parasitism is discussed. It is argued that its incidence will be higher in the tropics than in extreme zones, for example, high latitudes and deserts, because there is higher synchronization of breeding in the latter, and increased predation in the former zones. Also, it will be more common in species which lay large clutches, such as precocial species.  相似文献

.1. A study of individually marked Fulmars during three seasons has shown that both sexes can breed in successive years. The evidence for the theory of intermittent breeding is examined and definitions are given of the various categories of birds which compose the population during the breeding season. It is suggested that the supposed non-breeding adults which are seen, often in moult, in July are failed-breeders which have lost their egg or nestling.
2. No marked individual changed its nest-site between years, although the number and identity of sites occupied each July varied considerably.
3. No changes of mate occurred among the six marked pairs which nested in two consecutive years.
4. There is some evidence that both parents remain near the colony during the week before and after hatching.
5. Analysis of the 90 known sites of a colony subject to avian but not wild mammalian predation has revealed a wide range of habitat selection and a strong tendency toward close concentration of nests.
6. There is some evidence that the breeding season, as measured by date of hatching, varies from year to year.  相似文献

Aim  This research aims to understand the factors that shape elevational diversity gradients and how those factors vary with spatial grain. Specifically, we test the predictions of the species–productivity hypothesis, species–temperature hypothesis, the metabolic theory of ecology and the mid-domain effects null model. We also examine how the effects of productivity and temperature on richness depend on spatial grain.
Location  Deciduous forests along an elevational gradient in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA.
Methods  We sampled 22 leaf litter ant assemblages at three spatial grains, from 1-m2 quadrats to 50 × 50 m plots using Winkler samplers.
Results  Across spatial grains, warmer sites had more species than did cooler sites, and primary productivity did not predict ant species richness. We found some support for the predictions of the metabolic theory of ecology, but no support for the mid-domain effects null model. Thus, our data are best explained by some version of a species–temperature hypothesis.
Main conclusions  Our results suggest that temperature indirectly affects ant species diversity across spatial grains, perhaps by limiting access to resources. Warmer sites support more species because they support more individuals, thereby reducing the probability of local extinction. Many of our results from this elevational gradient agree with studies at more global scales, suggesting that some mechanisms shaping ant diversity gradients are common across scales.  相似文献

1. Despite the profusion of Lepidoptera and other potential hosts in the tropics, the Ichneumonidae are not more species-rich in the lowland tropics than in temperate communities. Alternate but partially complementary hypotheses emphasizing resource fragmentation, predation, or chemical defence have been proposed to explain this paradox.
2. Because different diversity gradients occur in the various subgroups of the Ichneumonidae, as well as among their hosts, general explanations are unlikely to account for this 'anomalous diversity.' Hypotheses of ecological causation are best tested at the taxonomic level where the pattern of interest applies.
3. Phylogenetic trends in the distribution, abundance, and palatability of butterflies (Papilionoidea), a group that increases dramatically in species richness towards the tropics, are presented as a case study for evaluating hypotheses of parasitoid species richness. Evidence is presented that supports the 'nasty host hypothesis' as an explanation for the lack of diversity of associated parasitoids.
4. An examination of hypotheses and the approaches used to test them suggests that the nasty-host hypothesis is best supported by the limited evidence available, while evidence in favour of other hypotheses is either lacking or ambiguous. In particular, use of the koinobiont/idiobiont dichotomy and parasitoid assemblage-size comparisons may result in contradictory conclusions.  相似文献
