The Okinawa woodpecker Sapheopipo noguchii is the rarest extant woodpecker species. The monotypic genus Sapheopipo was considered to be a representative of an old lineage of woodpeckers that led to the Eurasian genera Picus and the Blythipicus–Gecinulus species. This view, based on similarities in color patterns, external morphology and foraging behavior, has been adopted in all major accounts of the family. The alternative view, that this woodpecker may be related to the widespread white-backed woodpecker Dendrocopos leucotos, which evolved distinctive subspecies on other East Asian islands, has not been generally accepted. We analyzed partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) gene to test these hypotheses. The data suggest that the Okinawa woodpecker is a member of the genus Dendrocopos, with white-backed woodpecker and great spotted woodpecker D. major as close relatives. Color patterns support the genetic results and indicate a closer relationship with the white-backed woodpecker. Consequently, the correct taxonomic designation of the Okinawa woodpecker would be Dendrocopos noguchii (Seebohm in Ibis 5(5):173–182, 1887) in the tribe Campetherini rather than Picini.This revised version was published online in February 2005 with corrections to tables 1 and 2.  相似文献

啄木鸟群体共包含254种,但早期对啄木鸟的分类学研究局限于形态学、行为学和鸣唱法等方向,分子研究结果又彼此存在差异,因此啄木鸟分类系统目前还有争议。分子数据的大量累积为啄木鸟系统发育的研究提供了条件。利用从GenBank获取的ND2基因序列,对啄木鸟科179种啄木鸟采用NJ法、MP法以及ML法分别进行了分子进化树构建,同时用NJ法重建了Picumnus属分子进化树。此外又利用cytb基因序列采用NJ法对Dryobates属和Picoides属进行分子进化树重建。我们的结果显示,姬啄木亚科Picumnus属新大陆物种彼此的进化关系仍需进一步研究,而该属唯一一种旧大陆种P.innominatus,种内遗传差异在种间水平依然显著,这说明其种内遗传差异一直被低估了。在啄木鸟亚科内,Hemicircus属和Nesoctites属为姐妹关系,而Geocolaptes olivaceus插入了Campethera属支系中,并非与其构成姐妹群体。此外,一些姐妹群在新旧大陆上的分布,推测这种分布可能与第四纪冰川有关。啄木鸟从旧大陆向新大陆迁移,在第四纪冰川作用下不断发生分布范围的扩张与收缩,最终形成现存的分布格局。  相似文献

A geometric morphometric analysis was carried out on the crania of 13 species of elephant-shrews (Macroscelidea), a group of African mammals whose phylogeny is still debated. The material examined consisted of 313 crania and included all the genera of Macroscelididae, the unique family recognized by taxonomists. The results obtained from the analysis of the cranium shape and size, either from dorsal or lateral view, were very similar. The first one appeared more reliable because of the higher number of intersection points fixed between the cranial sutures. All the cranial features that distinguished the genus Rhynchocyon were a consequence of the extreme enlargement of frontal bones. Instead, within the subfamily Macroscelidinae, the differences between genera were based on modification involving other bones, mainly mastoids and nasals, as shown by the deformation grids. A cluster analysis confirmed the traditional subdivision in two subfamilies (Rhynchocyoninae and Macroscelidinae) but suggested a different relationship among the recognized genera belonging to Macroscelidinae. Our results are congruent with data obtained from previous biochemical research and support the traditional subdivision in two subfamilies, the monophily of the genus Elephantulus and its closeness with Petrodromus, relating to their similar cranium shapes. The latter presumably is a case of gigantism as adaptation to forest habitats. Further studies on all the species of Elephantulus could provide new evidence for assessing the relationships within this clade, including Macroscelides that by the present analysis appeared as a well-distinguished taxonomic entity.  相似文献

The cranial morphology of the extinct murid genus Stephanomys, previously known only by dental remains, is described here on the basis of partial skulls of three species of Pliocene age. Important cranial characters of the genus are a robust rostrum, a high zygoma, a wide zygomatic arch, a narrow interorbit, a large orbit, and an optic foramen in the backward position. In addition to some dental characters, Stephanomys shares most of these cranial traits with the extinct Malpaisomys from the Canary Islands. Some of these traits may be linked to the development of large eyes and life in a rocky environment. The peculiar dental pattern of Stephanomys (stephanodonty) is also present in some recent murids (Oenomys and Thamnomys) having a different skull morphology. A comparison with nine other extant genera of murids verified the relationship among Malpaisomys, Stephanomys, and Acomys, supporting our previous conclusion. Phenetic and cladistic analyses of 17 cranial and 23 dental characters show that skull morphology is phylogenetically informative but highly convergent and incongruent with other partial evidence based on dental and biochemical characters. The combined analyses of skull and teeth illustrate a case of mosaic evolution in murids.  相似文献

The world's argasid tick fauna comprises 183 species in four genera, namely Argas, Carios, Ornithodoros and Otobius in the family Argasidae. The ixodid tick fauna consists of 241 species in the genus Ixodes and 442 species in the genera Amblyomma, Anomalohimalaya, Bothriocroton, Cosmiomma, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis, Hyalomma, Margaropus, Nosomma, Rhipicentor and Rhipicephalus in the family Ixodidae, with the genus Boophilus becoming a subgenus of the genus Rhipicephalus. The family Nuttalliellidae is represented by the monospecific genus Nuttalliella. The species names of these ticks, based on seven previous complete or partial listings, as well as those of recently described new species, are presented in tabular format. Ten microsatellite loci were isolated from a species of the Neotropical electric eel, Eigenmannia, a genus of freshwater fish characterized by small populations and low vagility. Nine microsatellites were polymorphic, the number of alleles ranging from seven to 27, and values of observed heterozygosity ranging from 0.327 to 0.741. These loci were developed for population genetic studies of Eigenmannia sp. 2, however, cross‐amplification carried out with other species of this genus as well as other Gymnotiformes genera indicate that these molecular markers are also potentially useful for population‐level studies in closely related species.  相似文献

The acropomatid, Amia (Amioides) grossidens Smith and Radcliffe 1922, was originally described from a single specimen collected off Luzon Island, the Philippines. Although this species was regarded as belonging to Synagrops, it is distinguished from Synagrops by the dentition of the upper jaw, number of dorsal fin spines, and additionally from other acropomatid genera by 14 caudal vertebrae and a posttemporal spine. Therefore, this species should be placed in a monotypic genus Amioides, with elevation of the subgenus to generic rank, compared with diagnostic characters of seven other genera, and this genus and species were herein redescribed based on the holotype.  相似文献

The red algal order Bangiales has been revised as a result of detailed regional studies and the development of expert local knowledge of Bangiales floras, followed by collaborative global analyses based on wide taxon sampling and molecular analyses. Combined analyses of the nuclear SSU rRNA gene and the plastid RUBISCO LSU (rbcL) gene for 157 Bangiales taxa have been conducted. Fifteen genera of Bangiales, seven filamentous and eight foliose, are recognized. This classification includes five newly described and two resurrected genera. This revision constitutes a major change in understanding relationships and evolution in this order. The genus Porphyra is now restricted to five described species and a number of undescribed species. Other foliose taxa previously placed in Porphyra are now recognized to belong to the genera Boreophyllum gen. nov., Clymene gen. nov., Fuscifolium gen. nov., Lysithea gen. nov., Miuraea gen. nov., Pyropia, and Wildemania. Four of the seven filamentous genera recognized in our analyses already have generic names (Bangia, Dione, Minerva, and Pseudobangia), and are all currently monotypic. The unnamed filamentous genera are clearly composed of multiple species, and few of these species have names. Further research is required: the genus to which the marine taxon Bangia fuscopurpurea belongs is not known, and there are also a large number of species previously described as Porphyra for which nuclear SSU ribosomal RNA (nrSSU) or rbcL sequence data should be obtained so that they can be assigned to the appropriate genus.  相似文献

The current taxonomy on the haemococcidia establishes that the two genera of protozoan parasites that integrate the family Lankesterellidae are Lankesterella and Schellackia. However, the phylogeny of these genera, as well as the other coccidia, remains unresolved. In this sense, the use of type and described species is essential for the resolution of systematic conflicts. In this study, we molecularly characterize the type species of the genus Schellackia, that is, S. bolivari from Europe and also a described species of the same genus from Asia. At the same time, we contribute with the molecular characterization of another species of the genus Lankesterella. All this put together supports the polyphyly of the family Lankesterellidae. Therefore, we propose the resurrection of the zoological family, Schellackiidae Grassé 1953 , to include species within the genus Schellackia.  相似文献

The morphology of the gastric mill of 11 species in the family Euphausiidae is described. Two distinct arrangements can be recognized with respect to presence or absence of lateral teeth. One is the well-developed gastric mill of Thsanoessa gregaria, T. inermis, T. macrura and Pseudeuphausia sinica; the other is the gastric mill without lateral teeth of Nematoscelis atlantica, N. difficilis, N. megalops, Nematobrachion flexipes, N. sexspinosum, Stylocheiron abbreviatum, and S. carinatum. This supports the close relationships of the four species of both genera, Thysanoessa and Pseudeuphausia on the one hand and seven species belonging to Nematobrachion, Nematoscelis, and Stylocheiron on the other hand. The hypothesis that species in the same genus have similar gastric mill morphology, which was once rejected in the genus Thysanopoda, is accepted in all five genera examined here. The genus Penicillium is one of the largest and widely distributed fungal genera described to date. As a result, its taxonomic classification and species discrimination within this genus has become complicated. In this study, 52 isolates that belonged to the Penicillum genus and other related genera were characterized using two DNA-based methods: (i) analysis of the nucleotide sequences of internal transcribed spacers in ribosomal DNA and (ii) analysis of DNA fingerprints that were generated by polymerase chain reactions with specific primers for enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) and repetitive extragenic palindromic (REP) sequences, and BOX elements. Using both methods, Penicillium species were discriminated from other fungal genera. Furthermore, Penicillium species that include strains which are used as biocontrol agents, such as P. glabrum, P. purpurogenum, and P. oxalicum, could be distinguished from other Penicillium species using these techniques. Based on our findings, we propose that a polyphasic approach that includes analysis of the nucleotide sequences of ribosomal DNA and detecting the presence of highly conserved, repeated nucleotide sequences can be used to determine the genetic relationships between different Penicillium species. Furthermore, we propose that our results can be used as a start point to develop a strategy to monitor the environmental presence of particular strains of Penicillium species when they are used as biocontrol agents.  相似文献

Links between morphology and foraging strategies have been well established for many vertebrate groups. Foraging strategies of Melanerpes woodpeckers are especially variable, with at least six species being proficient flycatchers; the remainder of the better known species do not flycatch. Our objective was to examine variation in foraging tactics as it relates to skull morphology and other life history traits among these species to better understand the biology of these diverse woodpeckers. We measured eight skull characters from 241 individuals representing 19 species, but focused on eight species for which we had the most data. We used the log-geometric mean and a principal components analysis (PCA) to calculate size-scaled shape variables. Cluster analysis based on PCA scores clearly separated birds by foraging behavior. Species with similar foraging behaviors (i.e., flycatchers vs non-flycatchers) also share a number of other life history characteristics including similar plumage, diets, and migratory behavior. Diversity within Melanerpes may imply a high degree of plasticity or that species have been incorrectly placed in a polyphyletic group. Woodpeckers currently in the genus Melanerpes share few uniting characters and historically have been placed in as many as eight different genera. Additional life history, morphological, and genetic studies of the group, especially of Caribbean and Neotropical species, is warranted.  相似文献

Abstract: Complete skulls of giant marine reptiles of the Late Jurassic are rare, and so the discovery of the 1.8‐m‐long skull of a pliosaur from the Kimmeridge Clay Formation (Kimmeridgian) of Westbury, Wiltshire, UK, is an important find. The specimen shows most of the cranial and mandibular anatomy, as well as a series of pathological conditions. It was previously referred to Pliosaurus brachyspondylus, but it can be referred reliably only to the genus Pliosaurus, because species within the genus are currently in need of review. The new specimen, together with another from the same locality, also referred to P. brachyspondylus, will be crucial in that systematic revision, and it is likely that the genus Pliosaurus will be found to include several genera. The two Westbury Pliosaurus specimens share many features, including the form of the teeth, but marked differences in the snout and parietal crest suggest sexual dimorphism; the present specimen is probably female. The large size of the animal, the extent of sutural fusion and the pathologies suggest this is an ageing individual. An erosive arthrotic condition of the articular glenoids led to prolonged jaw misalignment, generating a suite of associated bone and dental pathologies. Further damage to the jaw joint may have been the cause of death.  相似文献

Detailed studies of various aspects of the morphology and reproduction ofAntithamnion subcorticatum Itono andAntithamnion crouanioides Itono show that these species are incorrectly referred to as the genusAntithamnion. To include these species, a new genus,Balliella, is proposed. In addition, some other algae possibly referable to this genus are briefly discussed. The genusBalliella is here recognized as a member of the new tribeDelesseriopsieae which is most nearly related to the tribe Antithamnieae in the Ceramiaceae. Abstract

Six genera and 11 species of Orthotylinae are now known from New Zealand. Zanchius Distant is newly recorded. One new genus, Tridiplous, and seven new species of endemic New Zealand Orthotylini are described and illustrated. Four new species are described in Tridiplous: T. burrus, T. parvapiatus, T. penmani, and T. virens, and three new species are described in Zanchius: Z. ater, Z. rubicrux, and Z. totus. Keys are provided to identify New Zealand taxa of the tribes of Orthotylinae, genera and species of Halticini, genera of Orthotylini, and species of Tridiplous and Zanchius. The bugs are illustrated with colour habitus photos, and drawings including male and female genitalia. Economic importance is discussed.  相似文献

Tribe Spiraeeae has generally been defined to include Aruncus, Kelseya, Luetkea, Pentactina, Petrophyton, Sibiraea, and Spiraea. Recent phylogenetic analyses have supported inclusion of Holodiscus in this group. Spiraea, with 50-80 species distributed throughout the north temperate regions of the world, is by far the largest and most widespread genus in the tribe; the remaining genera have one to several species each. Phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ITS and chloroplast trnL-trnF nucleotide sequences for 33 species representing seven of the aforementioned genera plus Xerospiraea divided the tribe into two well supported clades, one including Aruncus, Luetkea, Holodiscus, and Xerospiraea, the second including the other genera. Within Spiraea, none of the three sections recognized by Rehder based on inflorescence morphology is supported as monophyletic. Our analyses suggest a western North American origin for the tribe, with several biogeographic events involving vicariance or dispersal between the Old and New Worlds having occurred within this group.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships among six of the seven currently recognized genera of the subtribe Microseridinae were examined using comparative restriction site mapping of the chloroplast genome. Complete cleavage maps of 17 enzymes were constructed for 35 of the 46 species in the subtribe and six representative outgroup species from four other subtribes of the Lactuceae. A total of 373 restriction site mutations was detected, 180 of which were phylogenetically informative. The chloroplast DNA mutations were used to generate phylogenetic trees using Dollo, Wagner, and weighted parsimony, and the resulting monophyletic groups were evaluated by the bootstrap method. The results indicate that the Microseridinae is paraphyletic because Stephanomeria is nested within the six core genera of the subtribe. Five of the genera of the Microseridinae are monophyletic, whereas Microseris is paraphyletic because one of its species, M. lindleyi, is more closely related to Agoseris and Nothocalais. The distant relationship of M. lindleyi to the rest of the species of Microseris is enigmatic, especially in view of its known involvement in the origin of two allotetraploid species, M. decipiens and M. heterocarpa. The taxonomic implications of these results lead to a revised classification of Microseris in which the genus Uropappus is revived to accommodate M. lindleyi, and a new genus, Stebbinsoseris, is described to include the allotetraploids. The cpDNA phylogeny is used to evaluate the patterns of character evolution within the Microseridinae, as well as to test previous hypotheses that differences in generation time result in unequal rates of chloroplast DNA evolution.  相似文献

Armored skin resulting from the presence of bony dermal structures, osteoderms, is an exceptional phenotype in gekkotans (geckos and flap-footed lizards) only known to occur in three genera: Geckolepis, Gekko, and Tarentola. The Tokay gecko (Gekko gecko LINNAEUS 1758) is among the best-studied geckos due to its large size and wide range of occurrence, and although cranial dermal bone development has previously been investigated, details of osteoderm development along a size gradient remain less well-known. Likewise, a comparative survey of additional species within the broader Gekko clade to determine the uniqueness of this trait has not yet been completed. Here, we studied a large sample of gekkotans (38 spp.), including 18 specimens of G. gecko, using X-rays and high-resolution computed tomography for visualizing and quantifying the dermal armor in situ. Results from this survey confirm the presence of osteoderms in a second species within this genus, Gekko reevesii GRAY 1831, which exhibits discordance in timing and pattern of osteoderm development when compared with its sister taxon, G. gecko. We discuss the developmental sequence of osteoderms in these two species and explore in detail the formation and functionality of these enigmatic dermal ossifications. Finally, we conducted a comparative analysis of endolymphatic sacs in a wide array of gekkotans to explore previous ideas regarding the role of osteoderms as calcium reservoirs. We found that G. gecko and other gecko species with osteoderms have highly enlarged endolymphatic sacs relative to their body size, when compared to species without osteoderms, which implies that these membranous structures might fulfill a major role of calcium storage even in species with osteoderms.  相似文献
