The alpine-boreal plants which have survived in Central European lowlands during glacial periods depend both on the preservation of their refugial habitat, and their capability for vegetative and generative reproduction and dispersion. Pulsatilla vernalis (L.) Mill. is a model species which occurs throughout most of the European alpine system, as well as in isolated populations in the lowlands. At present, the relict lowland localities of this species often have a historic character. In the Polish lowlands, only the population located in Rogowiec is characterized by effective recruitment. It presents a large number of rosettes and a diversified demographic structure, with plants in all stages of development. The study examines the population in Rogowiec from 2002 to 2008 with regard to the number of flowering and fruiting shoots, new seedlings, and loss of juvenile rosettes, and the obtained data are correlated with climatic conditions. Three years were found to demonstrate effective recruitment, with numerous seedlings and little loss of juvenile rosettes. No significant relationship was found between seedling dynamics and the flowering–fruiting process. However, correlations were found between effective renewal and some climatic factors. Temperature, water balance, and solar radiation were found to have a limiting effect on the reproduction and regeneration of the analyzed relict population. Due to the longevity of the rosettes, favorable climatic conditions occurring every few years are sufficient for survival of the species in this location. However, serious threats are posed by the climate change trends expected in Europe over the coming decades, and the fact that due to its small-scale dispersal ability, the analyzed species occupies only a small area in Rogowiec.  相似文献

Estimates of gene flow between subpopulations based on FST (or NST) are shown to be confounded by the reproduction parameters of a model of skewed offspring distribution. Genetic evidence of population subdivision can be observed even when gene flow is very high, if the offspring distribution is skewed. A skewed offspring distribution arises when individuals can have very many offspring with some probability. This leads to high probability of identity by descent within subpopulations and results in genetic heterogeneity between subpopulations even when Nm is very large. Thus, we consider a limiting model in which the rates of coalescence and migration can be much higher than for a Wright–Fisher population. We derive the densities of pairwise coalescence times and expressions for FST and other statistics under both the finite island model and a many-demes limit model. The results can explain the observed genetic heterogeneity among subpopulations of certain marine organisms despite substantial gene flow.  相似文献

Evolutionary processes are expected to be crucial for the adaptation of natural populations to environmental changes. In particular, the capacity of rear edge populations to evolve in response to the species limiting conditions remains a major issue that requires to address their evolutionary potential. In situ quantitative genetic studies based on molecular markers offer the possibility to estimate evolutionary potentials manipulating neither the environment nor the individuals on which phenotypes are measured. The goal of this study was to estimate heritability and genetic correlations of a suite of leaf functional traits involved in climate adaptation for a natural population of the tree Fagus sylvatica, growing at the rear edge of the species range. Using two marker‐based quantitative genetics approaches, we obtained consistent and significant estimates of heritability for leaf phenological (phenology of leaf flush), morphological (mass, area, ratio mass/area) and physiological (δ13C, nitrogen content) traits. Moreover, we found only one significant positive genetic correlation between leaf area and leaf mass, which likely reflected mechanical constraints. We conclude first that the studied population has considerable genetic diversity for important ecophysiological traits regarding drought adaptation and, second, that genetic correlations are not likely to impose strong genetic constraints to future population evolution. Our results bring important insights into the question of the capacity of rear edge populations to evolve.  相似文献

以万仙山油松(Pinus tabulaeformis)为样本,建立了油松树木年轮宽度序列的标准年表(STD)。与附近气象因子的相关结果表明:与当年6月平均温度呈较为显著的负相关,与前一年的9月和当年的5月以及春季(3-5月)的降水量呈显著正相关,显然影响万仙山油松生长的主要气候因子是5月(或说春季)降水和6月温度。树轮指数与各月PDSI相关值都很高(其中与当年5月的PDSI相关值高达0.614),都超过95%的置信水平,说明水热组合是该区域油松生长的主要限制因子。研究表明,影响本区油松生长的气候因子与我国北方地区油松生长的影响因子有较高的一致性,尤其是生长季前期的温度影响都很大;而其降水的影响及其与PDSI的相关都明显超前于黄土高原及北方地区,这既说明影响油松生长的大气候因子相似,又表明夏季风从东南向西北的不断推进。  相似文献

Recent studies of the population dynamics of a system of lymphocytes in an in vitro immune response have reported strong correlations in cell division times, both between parents and their progeny, and between those of sibling cells. The data also show a high level of correlation in the ultimate number of divisions achieved by cells within the same clone. Such correlations are often ignored in mathematical models of cell dynamics as they violate a standard assumption in the theory of branching processes, that of the statistical independence of cells. In this article we present a model in which these correlations can be incorporated, and have used this model to study the effect of these correlations on the population dynamics of a system of cells. We found that correlation in the division times between parents and their progeny can alter the mean population size of clones within the system, while all of the correlations can affect the variance in the sizes of different clones. The model was then applied to experimental data obtained from time-lapse video microscopy of a system of CpG stimulated B lymphocytes and it was found that inclusion of the correct correlation structure is necessary to accurately reproduce the observed population dynamics. We conclude that correlations in the dynamics of cells within an ensemble will affect the population dynamics of the system, and the effects will become more pronounced as the number of divisions increases.  相似文献

A marked genetic differentiation to the presence of alcohol in the environment has been shown to occur between inside cellar and adjacent outside sections of a vineyard population of D. melanogaster ( McKenzie and Parsons 1974). Estimates of migration during the vintage period suggest considerable movement occurs from outside into the cellar and that the most tolerant genotypes are the most successful migrants. A quantitative model of this system suggests that the selection intensity may not be a limiting factor in maintaining the differentiation. It also suggests that gene flow must be restricted between sections of the population at all but vintage periods if this differentiation is to persist.  相似文献

In order to find effective measures to control a Moroccan shallow reservoir (Sidi Abderrahmane), a better understanding of phytoplankton composition, abundance, spatial and temporal distribution it is necessary. Trophic level and the stability status were assessed upon the basis of Shannon diversity index (H′), species richness (S), and evenness (J) index. Statistical tests were used to evaluate the different relationships between phytoplankton and the concentrations of several physico-chemical parameters, and the main soluble nutrients. In surveys, the samples were taken fortnightly from May 2011 to December 2012. 64 taxa belonging to seven groups of phytoplankton were identified, including Bacillariophyceae (25 taxa), Chlorophyceae (22 taxa), and Cyanophyceae (9 taxa). Aulacoseira granulata, Nitzschia palea, Scenedesmus acuminatus, and Oscillatoria sp, were the main contributors to the dissimilarity in temporal distribution. Phytoplankton population never reached a monospecificity situation. Shannon and evenness indices were between (0.0001?<?H′?<?0.15; 0.003?<?J?<?0.085) and manifested a young phytoplankton community with high multiplying power. There were significant correlations between total phytoplankton (r?=?0.015, p?<?.01) and water temperature. Significant negative correlations were observed between transparency and Cyanophyceae (r?=??0.208, p?<?.05) and between the number of species and transparency (r?=??0.206, p?<?.05), orthophosphorus (r?=??0.377, p?<?.01), and nitrates (r?=??0.301, p?<?.01). A negative correlation was found between Orthophosphorus and Chlorophyceae (r?=??0.377, p?<?.01). Similar correlations were also observed with nitrates and Chlorophyceae (r?=??0.297, p?<?.01), Silica and Bacillariophyceae (r?=?0, p?<?.01) and total phytoplankton (r?=??0.372, p?<?.07). The underwater light condition, as indicated by Secchi depth fluctuations, hydraulic process conditions (short residence time, short outflow/inflow ratio) were shown to be the limiting factors in regulating the density of phytoplankton. With reference to Palmer pollution index, test results indicated an oligotrophic or mesotrophic reservoir. The data presented provide the first contemporary account of the level of algal diversity present, the prominent environmental conditions and trophic status of Sidi Abderrahmane reservoir waters.  相似文献

This paper reviews some recent advances in single population stochastic differential equation growth models. They are a natural way to model population growth in a randomly varying environment. The question of which calculus, Itô or Stratonovich, is preferable is addressed. The two calculi coincide when the noise term is linear, if we take into account the differences in the interpretation of the parameters. This clarifies, among other things, the controversy on the theory of niche limiting similarity proposed by May and MacArthur. The effects of correlations in the environmental fluctuations and statistical methods for estimating parameters and for prediction based on a single population trajectory are mentioned. Applications to fisheries, wildlife management and particularly to environmental impact assessment are now becoming possible and are proposed in this paper.  相似文献

Bifidobacteria are a major microbial component of infant gut microbiota, which is believed to promote health benefits for the host and stimulate maturation of the immune system. Despite their perceived importance, very little is known about the natural development of and possible correlations between bifidobacteria in human populations. To address this knowledge gap, we analyzed stool samples from a randomly selected healthy cohort of 87 infants and their mothers with >90% of vaginal delivery and nearly 100% breast-feeding at 4 months. Fecal material was sampled during pregnancy, at 3 and 10 days, at 4 months, and at 1 and 2 years after birth. Stool samples were predicted to be rich in the species Bifidobacterium adolescentis, B. bifidum, B. dentium, B. breve, and B. longum. Due to high variation, we did not identify a clear age-related structure at the individual level. Within the population as a whole, however, there were clear age-related successions. Negative correlations between the B. longum group and B. adolescentis were detected in adults and in 1- and 2-year-old children, whereas negative correlations between B. longum and B. breve were characteristic for newborns and 4-month-old infants. The highly structured age-related development of and correlation networks between bifidobacterial species during the first 2 years of life mirrors their different or competing nutritional requirements, which in turn may be associated with specific biological functions in the development of healthy gut.  相似文献

An analytical model of a continuously fed, completely mixed Chlorella culture in which light is the factor limiting growth is presented. The conclusions from the theory are that in a culture of this type the population density is directly proportional to the retention time and the production rate is independent of retention time. A model is proposed that describes the growth of cell populations, in which the cycle durations of mother and daughter and of sister cells can be correlated. The model accounts for arbitrary frequency distributions of cycle durations and for arbitrary correlations. Depending on the mother-daughter correlations, the frequency distribution of cycle durations either remains the same or changes from one cell generation to the next one. Both phenomena are described in the literature for different cell populations. Sister-sister correlations are shown to influence only numerical values in the model but not the model's structure. Model calculations with different types of correlations are compared with growth data on the ciliate Tetrahymena geleii.  相似文献

Empirical data providing evidence for a colimitation of an herbivore by two or more essential nutrients are scarce, particularly in regard to biochemical resources. Here, a graphical model is presented, which describes the growth of an herbivore in a system with two potentially limiting resources. To verify this model, life-history experiments were conducted with the herbivore Daphnia magna feeding on the picocyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus, which was supplemented with increasing amounts of cholesterol either in the presence or the absence of saturating amounts of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). For comparison, D. magna was raised on diets containing different proportions of S. elongatus and the cholesterol- and EPA-rich eukaryotic alga Nannochloropsis limnetica. Somatic and population growth of D. magna on a sterol- and EPA-deficient diet was initially constrained by the absence of sterols. With increased sterol availability, a colimitation by EPA became apparent and when the sterol requirements were met, the growth-limiting factor was shifted from a limitation by sterols to a limitation by EPA. These data imply that herbivores are frequently limited by two or more essential nutrients simultaneously. Hence, the concept of colimitation has to be incorporated into models assessing nutrient-limited growth kinetics of herbivores to accurately predict demographic changes and population dynamics.  相似文献

The original mathematical model of microbial growth in the Chemostat is modified to describe continuous cultures in which the limiting nutrient is supplied at a rate independent of the dilution rate. The application of this model to continuous Chlorella cultures in which CO2 is the factor limiting growth is discussed. The conclusions from the model are: (i) at a constant rate of CO2 supply, the equilibrium population density is directly proportional to the retention time; and (ii) the production rate is directly proportional to the rate of CO2 supply. Theoretical considerations suggest that the relative abundance of age-specific limiting resources determines the ontogenetic timing of density dependence. Structural shelters may represent one such resource which can become increasingly scarce with increasing body size. Here we use a time series of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) densities and ask whether ontogenetic patterns of density-dependent losses in two separate reaches of a river can be predicted by considering their shelter abundances. The analyses were conducted using sampling site data (n = 30) as well as stream-reach averages. Loss rates from the egg to the young-of-the-year stage were density-dependent in both reaches. For the transition from the young-of-the-year to the yearling stage, when shelters are more likely to become limiting, the results were sensitive to the spatial scale of analysis. On the reach scale, among-year variation in loss rates was positively correlated with density in the reach with the lowest shelter abundance, whereas no such effect was found in the other reach. This demonstrates that the ontogenetic timing of density dependence can vary among areas within populations, and hence among populations, and that this variation can be explained by quantification of age-specific limiting factors. For analyses at the sample site scale this pattern was reversed, with stronger density dependence in the reach with highest shelter abundance. However, this result was clearly driven by immigration into low density sites, which masked the true reach-level effect. Thus, our study also exemplifies how population level regulation inferred from patch- or trap-based data that fails to account for animal movements can be biased.  相似文献

Although most vascular epiphytes are generalist, some exhibit host preferences. The latter may vary spatiotemporally driven by variation in environmental conditions. However, to our knowledge no previous studies have evaluated this variation. The aim of this study was to analyze variation in host preferences and population structures in the endangered bromeliad Tillandsia carlos-hankii in two pine-oak forests which differ in environmental conditions, tree composition and community structure. Our questions were: i) does Tillandsia carlos-hankii prefer certain host species over others?; ii) does this preference vary between sites?; iii) how does population structure vary between hosts species and sites? The two sites chosen were an east-facing (INE) and a west-facing slope (CNW). The tree community was sampled within an area of 0.1 ha at each site. Preferred host species were identified using two criteria: a) the degree of colonization; and b) the probability of colonization. In addition, population size-structure on each colonized tree was evaluated to compare between sites and host species. The results showed that almost every tree in the community was colonized by this bromeliad. At both sites Quercus rugosa was a preferred host species, while Q. laurina and Mirsyne juergensenii were preferred at INE but limiting at CNW. In turn, Pinus teocote was limiting at both sites. The percentage of small trees that were colonized depended on species identity. Population structures differed between sites and host species. Thus, both host preferences and local population behavior vary spatially given the differential conditions associated with the two sites.  相似文献

The dynamics of a midge community in which egg masses of Chironomous attenuatus were dominant and hosts to various fungal parasites were studied during three seasons at Mechumps Creek in Hanover County, Virginia. Catenaria spinosa, Couchia circumplexa, Atkinsiella entomophaga, a Plasmodiophora-like organism, and a number of water molds produced overall rates of infection in the egg masses ranging from 44.6 to 76.9%, and mortality in the eggs ranging from 28.8 to 41.4% during the 3-year period. C. spinosa and C. circumplexa were responsible for the largest amount of infection during each year of the study, and appeared and disappeared in response to changing water temperatures. Combined rainfall data over the 3-year period showed significant negative correlations with population densities and prevalence of disease. Studies also revealed significant negative correlations between infection and mortality levels and numbers of C. attenautus larvae collected 3–6 weeks later. The fungi were highly specific in their parasitism of C. attenuatus egg masses, even though egg masses of at least 10 other midge species were present at the study area. It is speculated that the host-parasite relationships and dynamics at Mechumps Creek are of frequent occurrence in many Virginia streams, where they constitute a natural control mechanism for C. attenuatus.  相似文献

Background

Individual differences in human cognitive abilities show consistently positive correlations across diverse domains, providing the basis for the trait of “general intelligence” (g). At present, little is known about the evolution of g, in part because most comparative studies focus on rodents or on differences across higher-level taxa. What is needed, therefore, are experiments targeting nonhuman primates, focusing on individual differences within a single species, using a broad battery of tasks. To this end, we administered a large battery of tasks, representing a broad range of cognitive domains, to a population of captive cotton-top tamarin monkeys (Saguinus oedipus).

Methodology and Results

Using a Bayesian latent variable model, we show that the pattern of correlations among tasks is consistent with the existence of a general factor accounting for a small but significant proportion of the variance in each task (the lower bounds of 95% Bayesian credibility intervals for correlations between g and task performance all exceed 0.12).

Conclusion

Individual differences in cognitive abilities within at least one other primate species can be characterized by a general intelligence factor, supporting the hypothesis that important aspects of human cognitive function most likely evolved from ancient neural substrates.  相似文献

Studies on the effects of natural and anthropogenic factors on the red deer (C. elaphus maral) population have been performed in the Caucasian Reserve. The results show that the population is well adapted to the impact of limiting environmental factors, such as high-snow winters and predation by wolves, but its dynamics are highly dependent on anthropogenic factors, primarily poaching. It is concluded that current biotechnical measures are inefficient and that economic activities and protective services in the reserve need optimization.  相似文献

In plants, it is hypothesized that allocation trade-offs may appear only when expenditures like seed production are high or external resources are scarce. In this study, we tested whether reproductive costs are more pronounced under enhanced interspecific competition.In a common garden, we investigated phenotypic correlations between sexual reproduction, clonal growth and storage structures in the grassland perennial, Succisa pratensis. During the past 50 years, habitats of this species have faced an expansion of clonal grasses that increase competition intensity. We simulated this process by growing five populations of Succisa from high- and low-production habitats with its clipped and non-clipped competitor, Agrostis capillaris. In addition, we experimentally removed flower heads of Succisa plants from one population grown with and without A. capillaris.We demonstrated costs of sexual reproduction by flower-head removal (resulting in increased plant size and relative allocation to belowground structures) but not by phenotypic correlations. We found no evidence that reproductive costs increase in a competitive environment and the opposite pattern was shown in both approaches used. However, high competition intensity reduced relative investment to flower-head production. In plants from low-production habitats, competition also reduced the absolute number of flower heads and belowground biomass as a result of smaller plant size. We assume that populations from low-production habitats are more prone to extinction as they have a reduced likelihood of local persistence and of escape to more suitable habitats during advancing succession.  相似文献

Topological, chemical and immunological barriers are thought to limit infection by enteropathogenic bacteria. However, in many cases these barriers and their consequences for the infection process remain incompletely understood. Here, we employed a mouse model for Salmonella colitis and a mixed inoculum approach to identify barriers limiting the gut luminal pathogen population. Mice were infected via the oral route with wild type S. Typhimurium (S. Tm) and/or mixtures of phenotypically identical but differentially tagged S. Tm strains (“WITS”, wild-type isogenic tagged strains), which can be individually tracked by quantitative real-time PCR. WITS dilution experiments identified a substantial loss in tag/genetic diversity within the gut luminal S. Tm population by days 2–4 post infection. The diversity-loss was not attributable to overgrowth by S. Tm mutants, but required inflammation, Gr-1+ cells (mainly neutrophilic granulocytes) and most likely NADPH-oxidase-mediated defense, but not iNOS. Mathematical modelling indicated that inflammation inflicts a bottleneck transiently restricting the gut luminal S. Tm population to approximately 6000 cells and plating experiments verified a transient, inflammation- and Gr-1+ cell-dependent dip in the gut luminal S. Tm population at day 2 post infection. We conclude that granulocytes, an important clinical hallmark of S. Tm-induced inflammation, impose a drastic bottleneck upon the pathogen population. This extends the current view of inflammation-fuelled gut-luminal Salmonella growth by establishing the host response in the intestinal lumen as a double-edged sword, fostering and diminishing colonization in a dynamic equilibrium. Our work identifies a potent immune defense against gut infection and reveals a potential Achilles'' heel of the infection process which might be targeted for therapy.  相似文献
