Diapetimorpha introita(Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), a native ectoparasitoid ofSpodopteraspp. pupae, was reared in the laboratory on an artificial diet devoid of any insect host components. Diet-reared wasps demonstrated a propensity to search for and parasitize natural hosts in a field cage trial. Longevity of the diet-reared wasps was comparable with the longevity of wasps reared on host pupae. Survival rate ofD. introitawas 61.3% when reared on diet and 76.3% when reared on host pupae. Wasps reared on the artificial diet had longer developmental times, reduced fecundity, and reduced adult weights compared to wasps reared on host pupae. These studies suggest that future research efforts should focus on increasing fecundity and weight of diet-reared wasps and decreasing the mortality and developmental time of wasps reared on the artificial diet. The ability to rearD. introitaon an inexpensive, artificial diet significantly enhances the potential of mass rearing this parasitoid for inundative releases againstSpodopteraspp.

Ingredient substitutions for agar or carrageenan in artificial diets for lepidopterous larvae were evaluated. A sodium polyacrylamide polyacrylate gelling agent, Water-Lock G-400, was compared with agar for solidifying diets of the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni (Hübner), omnivorous looper, Sabulodes aegrotata (Gueneé), and the western avocado leafroller, Amorbia cuneana Walsingham. Water-Lock G-400 is considerably less expensive than agar or carrageenan, it does not require heating to gel, and it is made from a dependable supply of agricultural starch. Sabulodes aegrotata pupae from larvae reared on agar were significantly heavier than those reared on Water-Lock G-400. However, the remainder of the variables observed (larval survival, developmental times, fecundity, sex ratio and pupal weights for A. cuneana and T. ni) were all independent of diet. Decreasing the total amount of ingredients in a Water-Lock-G-400 diet produced fewer and smaller T. ni pupae than did an agar diet when the larvae were reared using a mass production protocol. However, these lower values were still above acceptable levels for mass production and reduced the cost of diet production by 65%.Further ingredient substitutions impaired larval development (i.e., replacing pinto beans with soy protein or combinations of soy protein and -cellulose), while others did not (i.e., excluding pinto beans and reducing water content and replacing pinto beans with -cellulose or corn cob grits). Moisture control by adding corn cob grits to diets increased the yield of pupae, while removing water from diets increased survivorship and the yield of pupae.

In vitro rearing of Eucelatoria bryani Sabrosky (Diptera: Tachinidae) was made more efficient and economical. Absorbent cotton, used as a support to replace more expensive agar in an artificial medium, produced yields of adults equal to those reared on the agar-based medium. The weights of pupae from the cotton-supported medium were about 16% lighter than were the weights of pupae from the agar-based medium. Evaluation of diet volumes (100, 200 and 250 l) for individually reared flies revealed that highest adult yields (46.3%) were obtained when 200 l per maggot of agar-based diet were used in each well of microtiter plates; this is equivalent to 2,315 adults per liter of diet. The tachinids were small and the sizes were equal to those obtained when 10–15 maggots parasitize a single host. Costs could not be reduced by deleting free amino acids from the medium fed to older maggots because free amino acids are essential dietary ingredients for third instars of E. bryani.

The antiinsectan properties of the Fusarium graminearum-derived novel sterol sulfate, 4,4,24-trimethylcholesta-8,14,24(28)-trien-2,3,11,12-tetrol 12 acetate, 3-sulfate were tested on the corn earworm (Heliothis zea (Boddie), the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), and the driedfruit beetle (Carpophilus hemipterus L.). The sterol sulfate could not be used as a sterol source by any of the insects. The sterol sulfate inhibited growth of S. frugiperda and C. hemipterus larvae at 2500 and 4000 ppm, respectively. Defensive implications of this compound are discussed.

The zoophytophagous predator Dicyphustamaninii Wagner (Heteroptera: Miridae) hasbeen successfully reared for more than fivegenerations on a meat-based diet, and in theabsence of a plant as a substrate foroviposition and feeding. We compared thepredation efficiency of D. tamaniniiproduced on this diet with those rearedconventionally on Ephestia kuehniellaeggs (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) andtobacco plants. Their performances wereevaluated on two prey, the greenhouse whiteflyTrialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood(Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) and the cotton aphidAphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae). Their tendency to cannibalisticbehaviour was also evaluated.Nymphs of D. tamaninii produced on themeat diet consumed a similar number ofgreenhouse whitefly pupae after 24 and 48 hoursto nymphs reared by the conventional method.Diet-reared females consumed significantly morewhitefly pupae after 24 and 48 hours thancontrol females. When the cotton aphid wasoffered, diet-reared D. tamaninii nymphsand females consumed similar numbers of prey tocontrol D. tamaninii. There was nosignificant increase in cannibalistic behaviourof diet-reared D. tamaninii after 3 and 5days of interaction. These results show that, after fivegenerations, the predation efficiency and thetendency to cannibalism of meat-reared D.tamaninii is similar to that ofconventionally-reared individuals.

The tachinid Exorista larvarum (L.), a polyphagous gregarious larval endoparasitoid of Lepidoptera, was reared from egg to fecund adult on media containing commercial meat homogenates for babies as the main ingredient. Four media, each containing a diverse homogenate supplemented with extract of Galleria mellonella L. pupae, were tested first. Despite the difference in nutrient content, the kind of homogenate did not significantly affect the adult yields (30.2 to 40.7%) or puparial weights. Two other diets free of host materials (I and II) were then tested. Both were based on Gerber veal homogenate combined with different amounts of yeast extract and chicken egg yolk and were supplemented with wheat germ (I) or saccharose (II). Adult yields (28.7 to 32.7%) and puparial weights did not differ significantly between the two diets. Fly longevity and fecundity of the females obtained on diet I were comparable to those of the females emerged from puparia formed in G. mellonella larvae. Male and female puparial weights were, however, higher and development times longer on the diet than in the host.

Nutritional indices, development rates, percent dry weights and total lipids were determined in gypsy moth larvae (Lymantria dispar L.) reared on a high wheat germ (HWG) diet or diets prepared from lyophilized, ball-milled oak or pine foliage as the only source of dietary nitrogen (N). With regard to both total and proteinaceous N content, HWG diet>oak diet>pine diet. All nutritional indices measured were significantly lower in second instars fed pine diet vs. oak diet. Protein supplementation of pine diet with either casein or ovalbumin to bring total N up to the level present in oak diet resulted in small increased in approximate digestibility (AD) and effciency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), but relative growth rate (RGR) remained unaffected. The low RGR of larvae fed pine diet (unsupplemented or protein supplemented), as compared to those fed HWG or oak diet, was accompanied by significantly lower larval percent dry weight and percent total lipid. In contrast, RGR, larval percent dry weight and total lipid values were comparable in second instars fed HWG or oak diet. Insects reared from the first through the final instar on oak diet exhibited lower pupal weights compared to those reared on HWG. Casein addition to oak diet generally resulted in even more extended larval development times and further reduced pupal weights, but wheat germ addition to oak diet did not alter development rates and caused an increase in pupal weights.

Six densities (0.5 × 106, 1.0 × 106, 1.5 × 106, 2.0 × 106, 3.0 × 106, and 4.0 × 106 cells ml–1) of the micro-alga Scenedesmus acuminatus, were fed to the cladoceran, Moina micrura, in 40-litre glass aquaria. Moina population increased with increasing cell densities of Scenedesmus only up to treatment 3 (i.e. 1.5 × 106 cells ml–1) where a peak population of 11303 individuals per litre was obtained. Moinapopulation growth was inhibited at higher algal densities. The percentage of egg-bearing females and the number of eggs per egg-bearing females, followed a similar pattern. Comparatively, the peak production density of approximately 11000 Moina per litre, is interesting from a mass production point of view and indicates that S. acuminatus is a satisfactory micro-alga food for M. micrura.

The effects of diet during the fifth stadium on performance of adult N. viridula were determined through comparing growth, fecundity, and duration of tethered flight of insects reared on four axenic diets: fresh green bean, raw-shelled peanut, a combination of the two and soaked soybean seed. Females reared on the combination diet were heavier than those reared on green beans and oviposited more than those reared on peanuts. Three-day-old adult females reared on peanuts flew longer than those reared on green beans. More females reared on diets containing mature seed showed a capacity for extended flight and had larger fat bodies at 34-days postemergence. Thus, inadequate diet during the fifth stadium irreversibly affected growth, development, reproduction and flight capacity.

Females of the afrotropical mosquito species Anopheles gambiae Giles sensu stricto and An. quadriannulatus (Theobald) (Diptera: Culicidae) were studied for the effect of blood meal size and the frequency of blood feeding on reproductive development during the first gonotrophic cycle. To standardize the blood meals, meals were administered by enema in some experiments. The effects of insemination, mosquito size, and metabolic reserves at emergence on egg development were also investigated. Maximum insemination was reached after seven days, varying from 62% in An. quadriannulatus to 95% in An. gambiae and was significantly different (P<0.05) between the two species. Insemination had no effect on feeding success. Females of An. quadriannulatus were significantly larger than An. gambiae females (mean wing size 2.90 ±0.01 mm versus 2.82 ±0.01 mm), but the protein, glycogen, and lipid content of newly emerged females of the two species were not significantly different. Without a blood meal, larger females of both species were significantly more likely to develop oocytes up to Christopher's stage II. With one blood meal, 27% of An. gambiae became pre-gravid and 73% matured eggs. In contrast, all An. quadriannulatus females remained in the pre-gravid stage following ingestion of one blood meal. Vitellogenesis was significantly reduced in smaller-sized pre-gravid An. quadriannulatus compared to larger individuals. When given the opportunity to feed up to three times on three successive days, all females of An. gambiae matured eggs but only 85% of An. quadriannulatus did so. When 1 l of human blood was administered by enema, none of the females of either species developed eggs. With a single enema of 1.5 l of human blood, only An. gambiae developed eggs. A similar result was observed with 1 l and 1.5 l enemas of bovine blood although some An. gambiae also developed eggs with 1 l of blood. Anopheles quadriannulatus developed eggs only when given two 1 l enemas on successive days. However, the percentage of females developing eggs was significantly lower than that of An. gambiae. The implications of these differences in reproductive strategy are discussed in the light of behavioural traits in the field.

We have examined the effects of dietary selenium (Se) supplementation on larval growth and immunocompetence of the lepidopteran pest, the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni. Supplementation of the diet of T. ni larvae with 10–20 ppm Se resulted in a 1 day delay in pupation. The effects of the addition and/or removal of dietary Se on total Se bioaccumulation and sequestration were determined by neutron activation analysis of pupae. Early penultimate instar larvae moved from selenium containing diet to basal diet lost total pupal Se content down to the level of those fed basal diet. Conversely, larvae moved from basal diet to diet containing additional Se rapidly attained pupal Se levels comparable to larvae fed Se throughout larval development. Therefore, dietary Se is rapidly accumulated or lost during larval development, but significant amounts are sequestered from diet into pupae. Larvae were reared on diet supplemented with 5 or 10 ppm Se until the onset of the penultimate instar then infected per os with increasing concentrations of the fatal baculovirus Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV). Larvae fed Se in the penultimate and ultimate instars were more resistant to viral infection than larvae not fed Se in the final instars. This study indicates that dietary Se levels rapidly impact Se assimilation and sequestration and that tissue Se levels are an important factor in resistance to AcMNPV infection in larval T. ni.

Females of the migrant skipper, Parnara guttata guttata, that are reared under lower temperatures lay smaller eggs. The adaptive significance of egg size plasticity in response to temperature is unknown in this species. We suggest, based on the following experimental results, that P. g. guttata uses temperature as an indirect cue to predict the host condition (leaf toughness) of the next generation. First, larvae were reared under the typical conditions of temperature and photoperiod experienced during the immature stages in the first, second, and overwintering (third) generations (LD 16:8 at 25°C, LD 14:10 at 25°C and LD 14:10 at 20°C). Females reared under LD14:10 at 20°C produced more, smaller eggs than those reared under LD14:10 and LD16:8 at 25°C. Secondly, survival rates of first instar larvae derived from females reared under the three photoperiod/temperature treatments were measured on young soft rice leaves (soft), or tough, old rice leaves (tough). Survival rates of hatchlings reared on soft and tough leaves did not differ when females were reared under LD16:8 and LD14:10 at 25°C. However, hatchling survival was significantly higher on soft than on tough leaves when females were reared under LD14:10 at 20°C. Thirdly, we found that egg size plasticity in response to temperature in P. g. guttata may be a threshold response. Temperatures below 20°C experienced during the immature stages may be effective for production of smaller and more eggs in the overwintering generation of P. g. guttata.

Metaseiulus occidentalis females from the carbaryl-organophosphate-sulfur resistant strain (COS) lived longer (25.3 days versus 19.7 days), had a higher total fecundity (43.8 eggs female–1 versus 33.6 eggs female–1) and a higher daily fecundity rate (2.4 eggs female–1 day–1 versus 2.0 eggs female–1 day–1), and exhibited a higher intrinsic rate of increase (0.243 individuals female–1 day–1 versus 0.182 individuals female–1 day–1) and shorter generation time (13.9 days versus 17.0 days), at 24–28°C, 47–56%rh under continuous fluorescent light, when reared on a diet of 0–48-h-old eggs rather than a diet of mixed actives ofTetranychus pacificus McGregor on bean leaf disks. The sexratio of the progeny was female-biased for both diets, 2.1 females to 1 male forM. occidentalis reared on eggs and 2.0:1 : forM. occidentalis reared on mixed actives, suggesting that diet influences sex-ratio in some unknown way. There was no significant difference in oviposition rates for repeatedly-mated and once-matedM. occidentalis females reared on a diet of younger (0–24-h old) eggs compared to a diet of older (72–96-h old) eggs ofT. pacificus. The COS strain ofM. occidentalis exhibited life-table parameters comparable to the other strains reported in the literature, suggesting that the reproductive attributes of this acarine predator were not reduced as a result of artificial laboratory selection. Diet, a biotic factor, produced substantial differences in life-table parameters, suggesting that this factor can influence conclusions regarding the potential efficacy of biological control agents.

The development of the pupal parasitoidBrachymeria ovata (Say) was studied in 3 lepidopterous hosts reared on artificial diet and insect-susceptible and insectresistant soybena genotypes.Pseudoplusia includens (Walker),Anticarsia gemmatalis Hubner andHeliothis zea (Boddie) pupae from larvae reared on soybean leaves were less suitable forB. ovata development than pupae from larvae reared on artificial diet.B. ovata emergence rates, size and sometimes development period were adversely affected on plant-reared hosts. Dissection of hosts 6 days after parasitisation byB. ovata showed a higher proportion of diet-reared host pupae contained large parasitoid larvae than plant-reared hosts. Suitability differences were also detected among hosts reared on different soybean genotypes but these differences did not parallel closely the response of the lepidopterous hosts to soybean genotypes.

With few exceptions, the evolutionary consequences of harmful algae to grazers in aquatic systems remain unexplored. To examine both the ecological and evolutionary consequences of harmful algae on marine zooplankton, we used a two-fold approach. In the first approach, we examined the life history responses of two geographically separate Acartia hudsonica (Copepoda Calanoida) populations reared on diets containing the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium fundyense . One copepod population was from a region, Casco Bay, Maine, USA, that has experienced recurrent blooms of highly toxic Alexandrium spp. for decades; whereas the other population from Great Bay, New Jersey, USA, has never been exposed to toxic Alexandrium blooms. The life history experiment demonstrated that when the copepod population from New Jersey was reared on a diet containing toxic A. fundyense it exhibited lower somatic growth, size at maturity, egg production and survival than the same population reared on a diet without toxic A. fundyense . In contrast, toxic A. fundyense did not affect the life-history traits of the Maine population. Fitness, finite population growth rate (), was significantly reduced in the New Jersey population, but not in the Maine population. These results are consistent with the hypothesis of local adaptation (resistance) of the historically exposed copepod population to the toxic dinoflagellate. In the second approach, we further tested the resistance hypothesis with a laboratory genetic selection experiment with the naïve New Jersey copepod population exposed to a diet containing toxic A. fundyense. This experiment demonstrated that the ingestion and egg production of adult females of naïve copepods fed A. fundyense improved after three generations of being reared on a diet containing the toxic dinoflagellate. The results of the present study have important implications for understanding how grazer populations may respond to the introduction of toxic algae to their environment, and suggest that grazer resistance may be a feedback mechanism that may lead to bloom control.

Like other flower thrips, Frankliniella schultzei Trybom (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) feeds on pollen. However, the influence of a pollen diet on the life history of F. schultzei may not be as significant as reported for other thrips species. Frankliniella schultzei was reared successfully and with low mortalities (20%) on Wax Mallow, (Malvaviscus arboreus Cav.) plant part diets. Development times and fecundity on a petal diet were not significantly different from that on a pollen diet. Fecundity on a diet combining M. arboreus pollen, petal and leaf tissues was significantly higher than those individually containing these tissues. In laboratory choice tests, F. schultzei females encountered petal most often of the three plant parts. Pollen and leaf were encountered with similar frequencies. A significantly higher proportion of petal encounters (0.8) resulted in feeding than did pollen encounters (0.5). Few leaf encounters (0.1) were followed by feeding. Adult and larval F. schultzei were found in M. arboreus flowers but not on leaves. All parts of the flower were inhabited and not just the pollen-bearing petal apices and anthers. We propose that feeding on pollen within M. arboreus flowers is just one of many influences on the life history of F. schultzei and suggest that this may extend to other thrips species/host-plant combinations.

The copepod Calanus chilensis is an endemic component of the zooplankton community in northern Chile. Size distributions of adult females, relative frequency of copepodid stages and relative numbers of adult males and nauplii, suggest the presence of at least 6 generations during the year, although the species seems to continuously reproduce through all seasons. Temperature profiles from 0 to 175 m indicated the presence of the El Niño current during March and April. Surface temperature ranged between 21.1 and 13.1 °C. Warm waters during the El Niño event seemed to affect the body size of adult females and the normal course of cohort development, although the population tended to recover rapidly through the subsequent months. We discuss the role of oceanographic conditions in controlling the life cycle of this species, as well as its continuous growth through the year compared to other Calanus species.

We investigated the effects of transgenic maize (Zea mays) expressing Bacillus thuringienses toxin (Bt maize) on larval and adult Poecilus cupreus carabid beetles in laboratory studies. In no-choice trials, neonate P. cupreus larvae were fed exclusively with Spodoptera littoralis caterpillars, which had been raised on Bt maize. S. littoralis raised on conventional maize or high quality Calliphora sp. pupae were fed to the beetle larvae in two control treatments. Bt-maize-fed caterpillar prey increased mortality to 100 within 40days. The experiment was repeated with 10-day-old beetle larvae. Bt treatment resulted in fewer pupae than in both controls, and in a higher mortality than in the Calliphora control. S. littoralis was suitable as exclusive prey in no-choice tests, at least for 40days, although prey quality seemed to be low compared to Calliphora pupae. The observed effects are most likely indirect effects due to further reduced nutritional prey quality. However, direct effects cannot be excluded. In the second part of the study, exposure of P. cupreus to Bt intoxicated prey was examined in paired-choice tests. Adult beetles were offered a choice between different prey conditions (frozen and thawed, freshly killed or living), prey types (S. littoralis caterpillars, Calliphorasp. pupae, cereal aphids) and prey treatments (raised on Bt or conventional maize). Living prey was preferred to frozen and dead prey. Caterpillars were only preferred to fly pupae and aphids when living. Prey treatment seemed to be least important for prey selection. The tests showed that P. cupreus ingested caterpillars readily and there was no evidence of them avoiding Bt containing prey, which means exposure in the field could occur. The presented protocols are a first step towards ecological risk assessment for carabid beetles.

Summary Theory and methods for identifying populations (P y ) with the highest frequency of favorable dominant alleles not present in an elite single cross (I 1× I 2) have been developed recently. During selection, new favorable alleles can be transferred from P y to either I 1 or I 2 only at the risk of losing favorable alleles already present in the single cross. A net improvement (NI) statistic, which estimates the relative number of favorable alleles that can be gained from P y minus the relative number of favorable alleles that can be lost from I 1 or I 2, is presented. NI is calculated as maximum [(I 1×P y I 1×I 2)/2,(I 2×P y I 1×I 2)/2]. Because I 1 × I 2 is constant in an experiment, the method reduces to choosing P y populations with the best mean performance in combination with either I 1 or I 2. For a set of maize (Zea mays L.) grain yield data, NI was highly correlated to three other statistics proposed for choosing populations, namely: (1) minimally biased estimate (l ) of the relative number of favorable dominant alleles present in P y but not in I 1 and I 2; (2) minimum upper bound on l ; and (3) predicted performance of the three-way cross [P y (I 1× I 2)]. While l estimates potential improvement likely to be achieved only through long-term recurrent selection, NI is probably a better predictor of short-term improvement in single-cross performance.A contribution from Lifaco Genetics, a subsidiary of Groupe Limagrain

Measurements of root-length density (RLD) in a range of 31 apple, kiwifruit, peach, Asian pear and grape orchards were used to derive indices to describe the exploration and exploitation of rooting volumes. Orchards were of various ages and located on a range of soil types, geographic regions, management systems etc. Data were obtained from core samples of volume 1.66×10-4 m3 randomly taken within a standard volume, determined by average planting grids, of 2 m radius centred on tree stems, and 1 m depth. Root systems were described using an exploitation index, E(), and an exploration index, E(0). E() is defined as the proportion of the soil volume which contains roots at RLD greater than or equal to some specified value, . E(0) is defined as the proportion of the soil volume which contains roots at any RLD greater than zero. These indices are dependent on sample size, as are all volumetric or soil-coring data.Estimates of E(0) for each orchard were obtained as the proportions of cores containing any RLD>O and assessed for dependence on species. Peach trees had a significantly higher value of E(0), equal to almost 1.0, compared to the other four species where E(0) was approximately 0.8 (p0.01) or less. There was also some variation with age. E(0) was lower for very young plants which had not fully occupied the sampled soil volume. Exploration indices for woody roots increased with rootstock age but otherwise did not explain large differences in E() between species for given values. For example at =0.05×104 m.m-3, E() was approximately 0.45 for peach and kiwifruit, and 0.05 for apple, Asian pear and grape, whereas at =0.5×104 m.m-3 the corresponding values were 0.1 and almost zero. Negative exponential curves relating E(), scaled by dividing by E(0), to were fitted for each of the 31 orchards. Exponents for these curves, k, were significantly smaller for kiwifruit and peaches than apples, grapes and Asian pears (p0.05), and smaller for apples than grapes and Asian pears (p0.05). A larger k implies a rapid fall-off in E() as increases. Although all five species contained zero and low RLD samples, only kiwifruit and peaches contained higher RLD values and consequently have higher mean RLD. This trend was consistent across all soils, regions, sampling dates, and plant ages. The analyses demonstrate that core sampling can give useful insights into macro-scale root-system distribution, such as the proportion of a soil volume explored and how it is exploited. If positions of core samples are noted during sampling using angular direction, depth and radial distance as spatial coordinates the method can be used to describe root-system structures.
