The frequency distributions of eggs of the aphid parasite, Aphidius sonchi Marshall, offered 25, 50, 100 or 200 aphids per flowering shoot per female per day were determined for three consecutive days. The numbers of eggs within aphids were neither consistently overdispersed nor underdispersed, except at the two lower levels of host availability on the first day when the parasites laid large numbers of eggs into a small proportion of the hosts. These results suggest that female A. sonchi do not avoid ovipositing in already parasitized hosts under these conditions.

Nineteen cohorts of Hyperomyzus lactucae (L.) (Homoptera: Aphididae) reared at various temperaturelight regimes were exposed to attack by Aphidius sonchi Marshall (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) at different ages of their development. Irrespective of host age at the initial parasitization and rearing conditions, the rates of reproduction, development and survival were unaffected until the parasites within had completed approximately 30, 40 and 55% of their total development respectively. As a result, aphids parasitized in the first or early second instar failed to reach maturity. Thereafter, the numbers of young produced by parasitized aphids increased rapidly as the age of the hosts at initial parasitization increased, and aphids parasitized 3 days after the final moult or later showed similar potential to contribute to future population increase. In comparison with the effects on host moulting, those on wing development of the potentially alatiform nymphs appeared much sooner after the beginning of parasitization, but again with the time lags being more or less independent of host age at the initial parasite attack. Consequently, the extent of wing development depended entirely on the age of the hosts when attacked. These results showed that the age of the host at the initial parasite attack is crucial in determining the consequences of parasitization on the host.

Multiparasitism of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) by the solitary aphidiid parasitoids Aphidius matricariae Haliday and Ephedrus cerasicola Starý was studied in the laboratory at 22°C. Single aphids first stung by an A. matricariae female were then offered to a female of E. cerasicola 1, 2 or 3 days later. E. cerasicola oviposited without restraint in such aphids. The multiparasitized aphids were dissected 3 or 4 days after the Ephedrus parasitization or allowed to mummify.Only a single parasitoid, either egg or larva, was found in a dissected host. The relative frequency of the two species was roughly the same in dissection series as in corresponding mummification series. When E. cerasicola oviposited 1 or 2 days after A. matricariae, E. cerasicola was the intrinsically superior species. Dissection showed that the competition occurred at least one day before the Ephedrus egg hatched, and that very few eggs of A. matricariae hatched in such aphids. Apparently, the Aphidius eggs must have been killed by substances injected by the ovipositing Ephedrus female or by substances or structures connected with the Ephedrus egg itself. When E. cerasicola oviposited 3 days after A. matricariae, A. matricariae survived. Probably its 4th instar larvae devoured the eggs of E. cerasicola together with the other host contents.Interspecific competition without larvae involved has not previously been demonstrated in Aphidiidae.

The Palaeoarctic parasitoid Aphidius ervi Haliday (Hymenoptera, Aphidiidae) parasitises legume aphids in its region of origin. In Chile, it parasitises both legume and cereal aphids. This special situation was studied at two levels: (i) the host searching behaviour of A. ervi from two different tritrophic systems (Acyrthosiphon pisum on alfalfa and Sitobion avenae on wheat) was investigated in dual choice tests in a wind tunnel between odours from both A. pisum-alfalfa host plant complex (HPC) and S. avenae-wheat HPC, and (ii) the genetic structure of A. ervi populations from both sources using molecular markers. Responses of A. ervi females to volatile olfactory cues emanating from A. pisum-alfalfa HPC and S. avenae-wheat HPC were significantly higher towards the HPC on which they were reared during the last generation before experimentation, regardless of the origin of the parasitoid. As previously described for this parasitoid species, oviposition experience was also of major relevance in the preferences of female parasitoids. On the other hand, variation in mitochondrial DNA segments and RAPD-PCR polymorphism using total DNA showed the absence of host-based population structure and a high genetic homogeneity between these A. ervi populations. These results reject the possible existence of different host-strains of this parasitoid in Chile.

The fecundity, reproductive rates, and adult survival of Aphidius sonchi Marshall (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) parasitizing second and third instar nymphs of the sowthistle aphid, Hyperomyzus lactucae (L.) (Homoptera: Aphididae) were measured at six different host densities under constant laboratory conditions. At host densities of less than 50 aphids per flowering shoot per female per day, oviposition constraints resulting from the lack of hosts reduced the number of eggs laid, enhanced the extent of superparasitization and, as a result, effectively lowered the fecundity and reproductive rates of the parasites. Above this host density the parasites laid on average 220–230 eggs, but the effective fecundity and reproductive rates continued to increase with the host density. By contrast, the survivorship of the parasites seemed unaffected by host density, with an average adult life span of 4–5 days at all densities. Analysis of the data showed that the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) of the parasite varied with the host density and could reach values higher than that of the host under identical conditions. The response of rm to changes in host density and parasite sex ratio is illustrated.Overall, A. sonchi showed a typical convex functional response, to host density. However, the response showed obvious changes through the parasite's adult life and, furthermore, the rates of changes were not consistent at all host densities. The frequency distributions of parasite eggs were generally indistinguishable from random, and the number of hosts parasitized were predicted satisfactorily by the random oviposition equation.

A European strain of Aphidius ervishall be introduced into Japan for the control of Macrosiphum euphorbiaeon greenhouse tomatoes. We compared this strain, which is originating from The Netherlands (EVP), with a native strain from Hokkaido, Northern Japan (SPR) in several characteristics. The percentage of parasitism of SPR and EVP was significantly different, when attacking three aphid species: 13% and 30% on M. euphorbiaeon tomato, 68% and 93% on Acyrthosiphon pisumon broad bean and 10% and 42% on Aulacorthum solanion sweet pepper, respectively. SPR and EVP differed morphologically (in the colouration of the petiole) and in the esterase banding patterns. Furthermore, cross mating experiments showed that SPR and EVP are partially reproductively isolated from each other. Complete reproductive isolation is evident in the one direction cross (EVP females and SPR males).

Aphidius rhopalosiphi parasitises green colour forms of Sitobion avenae more frequently than brown forms. The handling time is longer for brown than for green nymphs, even when the two forms are members of the same clone. Parasite development lasts longer in brown forms than in green forms, and mortality is higher.

Temperature dependencies were established for the egg-to-mummy and mummy-to-adult phases, for mummy mortality, and for parasitism of Aphidius ervi Haliday, Aphidius rhopalosiphi De Stefani-Perez, and Praon volucre (Haliday) (Hymenoptera, Aphidiidae), three parasitoids of Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Homoptera, Aphididae), at 8°C, 12°C, 16°C, 20°C, and 25°C on winter wheat (cv. Haven). A physiological model described temperature-dependent development over the full temperature range, whereas a linear model was fitted for data above 8°C and used to estimate the lower temperature thresholds and day-degrees (° D) required for development. The thresholds for A. ervi were 2.2°C for egg-mummy development and 6.6°C for mummy-adult development, those for A. rhopalosiphi were 4.5°C and 7.2°C, and those for P. volucre were 3.8°C and 5.5°C. The time to develop into mummies and adults differed significantly between the three species: A. ervi development into mummies required an average of 159 ° D, while development into adults took an average of 73 ° D. The corresponding average times required for A. rhopalosiphi and P. volucre to develop mummies were 124° D and 126° D, while their development into adults required an average of 70° D and 150° D, respectively. Mummy mortality was 25–35% at 8°C and less at the higher temperatures tested, but began to increase again at 25°C, showing a quadratic relationship between mortality and temperature. Parasitization was very low or, in the case of P. volucre, absent up to 12°C and thereafter increased with increasing temperature. The relationship between parasitization, recorded as percent aphids mummified, and temperature was linear at the temperatures tested and depended on species. A. ervisuperparasitized 11.1% aphids at 20°C and 16.6% aphids at 25°C, whereas superparasitism was low in A. rhopalosiphi and absent in P. volucre. From 16°C to 25°C the P. volucre sex ratio increased. For A. ervi and A. rhopalosiphi there was no trend with temperature, but at 20°C and 25°C it was close to even. Field data for 1996 and 1997 allowed for a comparison of actual and expected emergence of overwintering mummies. In both years, parasitoids were predicted to have emerged from overwintering mummies well in advance of the onset of aphid infestation, and more than a month earlier than the first parasitized aphids were found in winter wheat. Observations from trap plants in other crops supported the predictions of the models. Other factors that can affect biological control by cereal aphid parasitoids are discussed.

Aphidius colemani Viereck(Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) showed a developmenttime extended by 16% when reared on Myzus persicae Sulzer (Hemiptera: Aphididae) ofdifferent instars on artificial diet or onaphids on Brussels sprout plants. There wasalso a small but statistically significant 2%reduction in size (in hind tibia length) ofadult females. Rearing on diet had nosignificant effect on the number of eggsfemales contained at emergence. In a secondexperiment, aphids from Brussels sprouts ininstars 2–5 were compared with aphids from diettwo days older to give comparably sized aphidsfrom both substrates. Parasitisation by A.colemani gave the same direction of results, but showed that the effects in the firstexperiment were greater than predicted from thereduction in host size alone. However, in bothexperiments effects on parasitoids ofdiet-rearing the host were small, and culturingA. colemani on diet-reared aphids wassuccessful.

The searching behaviour of two aphid parasitoids, Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) and Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera, Aphidiidae), was analysed. Both species searched banana plants (Musa spec.) infested with the banana aphid Pentalonia nigronervosa Coq. in a different way. L. testaceipes restricted its search to open plant structures and avoided concealed areas. A. colemani partitioned its time spent on the plant between open and concealed areas. This general pattern was independent of aphid colony size and was also observed in the absence of aphids. As a consequence of these searching tactics, the borders of a host patch differed for both parasitoid species. For L. testaceipes, the patch consisted only of aphids feeding on open structures, while it comprised the whole aphid colony for A. colemani. The observed searching patterns resulted in a different exploitation of the aphid colonies.

Development, adult size and fecundity of the aphid parasite, Aphidius sonchi Marshall (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae), which began their development in the first and third instar nymphs of Hyperomyzus lactucae (L.) (Homoptera: Aphididae), were studied in the laboratory. Survival and development times were almost identical in the two host instars. However, adult parasites reared in the first instar hosts were smaller and had fewer eggs at emergence than those reared from the third instar.Further analysis showed that the size of an adult parasite, irrespective of host stage at reception of the parasite egg, was largely determined by the size of the host when the parasite was in its destructive feeding phase. Furthermore, within parasites reared from each of the two host instars, the earlier emerging individuals were larger and contained more eggs on emergence. However, the relationships between size, development time and fecundity in the parasites differed significantly between cohorts reared from the two host instars. These results indicate that (1) the suitability of the aphid to the development of the parasite varies as the aphid develops, and (2) several aspects of the parasite biology must be studied to show the relative suitability of the aphids of a given instar.

We used three different approaches, a phylogenetic analysis, the principal component analysis, and Gabriel Graphs, to study the dispersion of the medfly from its geographic centre of origin. Our analysis was based on 13 enzyme polymorphisms detected electrophoretically in 15 natural populations coming from distinct geographic areas. The results indicate that (i) there is a clear-cut separation of the native African from the introduced populations, (ii) the population from Spain seems to connect the African and the Mediterranean or American populations, and (iii) the Mediterranean populations as well as the American ones comprise two distinct groups of closely related populations. We have also estimated a phylogenetic tree for 3 species of the genus Ceratitis: C. capitata, C. rosa and C. nigra, based on electrophoretic data under the assumption of a molecular clock. The results suggest that C. capitata and C. rosa are more closely related to each other than either is to C. nigra.

The effect of wind speed and distance from the source on the male response of the aphid parasitoid, Aphidius ervi (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae), to a pheromone source was studied in a wind tunnel. The number of males taking flight, entering the plume and successfully reaching the source, decreased at wind speeds >50 cm/s. Furthermore, the proportion of those attempting upwind flight that fell to the ground increased with increasing wind speed. In contrast, distance from the source had no significant effect on any of the parameters examined. While male flight behavior was significantly reduced at 70 cm/s, some males walked to the source when there was a bridge connecting the pheromone source and the release platform. This suggests that ambulatory behavior could be a significant component of male mate searching in A. ervi when wind conditions are too strong for upwind flight. The possible effects of variation in atmospheric pressure on male flight behavior to the long distance pheromone, as well as to the short distance one, were also investigated. No significant effects of atmospheric pressure were observed. These findings differ significantly from those previously reported for another aphid parasitoid, A. nigripes, and the reasons for such differences are discussed.

The behaviour of Aphidius rhopalosiphi DeStefani-Perez (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was recorded in laboratory bioassays in the presence and absence of both residues of honeydew from the English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (F.) and the pyrethroid insecticide, deltamethrin. Insecticide concentrations ranged from the field recommended dose rate (6.25 g ai/ha in 2001 water) to 1/16th of field rate. Parasitoids responded strongly to patches of honeydew on filter papers, however the addition of increasing concentrations of deltamethrin caused increasingly early departure from the honeydew-treated areas. Parasitoids pre-exposed to field concentration residues for between 1 and 20 min showed shorter retention times and abnormal types of behaviour on honeydew-treated patches compared to control wasps. Recovery of normal behaviour patterns occurred over a 12 h period away from the insecticide source. Further laboratory studies examined the foraging of A. rhopalosiphi and one of its associated hyperparasitoids, Dendrocerus carpenteri (Curtis), on mature wheat plants treated with an artificial honeydew solution and deltamethrin. Wasps exposed to deltamethrin residues were observed to spend shorter visit times, to groom more frequently and to rest less frequently than those on insecticide-free plants. Differences were found between the distribution of parasitoids on insecticide-treated and untreated plants, with D. carpenteri showing greater movement down insecticide-treated plants accompanied with an increase in time spent on abaxial leaf surfaces compared to A. rhopalosiphi. The results are discussed in terms of the repellency of deltamethrin and the implications for integrated pest management of differing sub-lethal insecticide effects on primary parasitoid and hyperparasitoid behaviour.

The development time, survivorship and age-specific fecundity of apterous and alate virginoparae of the sowthistle aphid, Hyperomyzus lactucae (L.) (Homoptera: Aphididae), reared on Sonchus oleraceus L., were measured under various temperature and light regimes. Within the temperature range of daily means of 12.5–24°C, speed of development and reproductive rate increased, while life span and total fecundity decreased, with an increase in temperature. The relationship between temperature and rate of development was nearly linear, with a notional development threshold estimated at about 2°C. The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was positively correlated with temperature when calculated on a daily basis, but was inversely related to temperature when measured on a physiological time scale. Alatae generally had a longer development time, and achieved a lower reproductive rate and life-time fecundity, than apterae reared under identical conditions.Comparison of aphid performance under constant and alternating temperature regimes, and between successive generations under the same regime, showed that (1) the conditions experienced by the aphid as an embryo within its mother are important in determining survival and development and (2) tolerable temperature limits vary with the pattern and amplitude of the fluctuations of temperature. At 22°C, changes of photoperiod within the range of 12D:12L to 8D:16L had little effect on aphid performance.

Separate and combined effects of changes in salinity and water temperature on the survival of laboratory hatched juvenileMesopodsis orientalis were investifated. Full strength seawater (35) was not favorable to juvenile survival. Salinities down to 10% seawater were tolerated when subjected to sudden exposure, but salinity acclimation increased juvenile ability to tolerate even fresh water. Water temperatures tolerated by the animals ranged from 12°C to 33°C. Salinities of 30% to 60% seawater and water temperatures of 22°C to 28°C were most favorable to the juveniles. Experimental results were compared with field observations and a relationship between the salinity and temperature of seawater and abundance of juveniles in May to June, and November to January in Bombay coastal waters (west coast of India) was established. Seawater of reduced salinity was found to be a major factor for occurrence of juvenileM. orientalis in abundance.

Intraguild predation (IGP) occurs when consumers competing for a resource also engage in predatory interactions. A common type of IGP involves aphid predators and parasitoids: since parasitoid offspring develop within aphid hosts, they are particularly vulnerable to predation by aphid predators such as coccinellid beetles. Other intraguild interactions that include non-lethal behavioral effects, such as interference with foraging and avoidance of IGP, may also hamper parasitoid activity and reduce their effectiveness as biological control agents. In this study, we quantified mortality in and behavioral effects on Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) by its IG-predator Coccinella undecimpunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), and compared the impact of two release ratios of these natural enemies on aphid populations. Parasitoids did not leave the plant onto which they were first introduced, regardless of the presence of predators, even when alternative prey was offered on predator-free plants nearby. In 2-hour experiments, predator larvae interfered with wasp activity, and the level of aphid parasitism was lower in the presence of predators than in their absence. In these experiments, the parasitoids contributed more to aphid mortality than the predators and aphid suppression was higher when a parasitoid acted alone than in combination with a predator larva. These results were confirmed in a 5-day experiment, but only at one parasitoid:predator release ratio (4:3) not another (2:3). The over-all impact on aphid population growth was non-the-less stronger when both enemies acted together than when only one of them was present. Results indicate that for given release ratios and time scale, the negative lethal and non-lethal effects of the predator on parasitoid performance did not fully cancelled the direct impact of the predator on the aphid population.

Tree bark characteristics influence epiphyte establishment and survival and consequently the way in which epiphytes are distributed on trees. Tree species with peeling bark have been reported as poor epiphyte hosts. We analyzed the distribution and seedling mortality of two Tillandsia species (Bromeliaceae) in relation to rate of bark peeling of Bursera fagaroides (Burseraceae). The highest peeling rate (0.12% per day) took place on the trunk and the lowest rate on twigs (0.04% per day; branches ≤2 cm in diameter). The highest proportion of Tillandsia plants appeared on twigs. The distributions of juvenile and adult plants on twigs were higher than those expected based on the distribution of first-year seedlings, suggesting that on twigs, survival could be greater than on trunks and branches, canopy areas where peeling is faster. On the trunk and branches, in contrast, the proportion of juveniles and adults were similar to or less than that expected for first-year seedlings. The main cause of mortality was peeling and the area of minor overall mortality was the trunk, suggesting that this area should be favored as the main distribution area for the Tillandsia species but is not. Our results show that the peeling rate of B. fagaroides depends on branch size and suggest that the Tillandsia distribution depends not only on peeling rate but also on seed dispersion. We suggest that to colonize B. fagaroides epiphytes would either have adaptations to counteract the peeling rate or should occur in the areas of lowest peeling rate located in the exterior crown of trees.

The solitary parasitoids Aphidius erviHaliday (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) and Aphelinus asychisWalker (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) attacked but generally did not oviposit in pea aphids parasitized by the other species. Wasps selectively oviposited in unparasitized hosts when given a choice. Host discrimination depended on the recognition of internal cues. Females of A. asychiseither could not recognize or ignored A. ervi'sexternal host marking pheromone. Under most conditions, A. ervisurvived in superparasitized hosts, killing competing A. asychislarvae by physical attack and possibly physiological suppression. The outcome of larval competition was not affected by oviposition sequence or age difference between larvae; A. asychissurvived only when it had substantially completed larval development before the host was superparasitized by A. ervi.It is suggested that competition for host resources incurs a cost, for the winner in terms of reduced size or increased development time and for the loser in terms of lost progeny and searching time. Consequently, heterospecific host discrimination can be functional. Internal, and probably general, cues enable wasps to recognize and avoid oviposition in hosts already parasitized by an unrelated species.
